CLUB NEWS I want to thank all of our members who participated in the Membership survey last month. The McMahon Group is currently compiling the results and we should be getting a report at the end of July. This report will be distributed to all members in early autumn either electronically or by mail. Your Board and Strategic Planning Committee are eager to see what The Army and Navy Club members have to say as this will assist us in planning for the years ahead. There are some great events planned for this summer. Over the years the Club has been adding more events for kids, and the annual summer event has been a big hit. In the past, the staff has organized scavenger hunts and cooking classes. This year, on July 14, they’re trying something new – laser tag! Register the kids and grandkids today if you haven’t yet! On July 17, the Club will host the Annual Andrew J. Goodpaster Award. This year’s recipient is General John M. Keane, USA (Ret.). The Goodpaster Award is given to business leaders, politicians and military leaders who have exhibited great courage, selfless service and patriotism, and General Keane certainly exemplifies all of these qualities. Then, on July 31, after having to reschedule due to a later winter snow storm, we will have our last book forum of the summer with Theo Emery who will be speaking about his book Hellfire Boys: The Birth of US Chemical Warfare Service and the Race for the World’s Deadliest Weapons. It will also be the last seafood buffet before our short summer hiatus, so be sure you take the time to get down to the Club!

Letter from the Membership Chairman CDR Christopher P. Thomas, USN (Ret.), Membership Chairman & Governor

ENHANCING VALUE FOR ALL MEMBERS

Our Board of Governors and Strategic Planning Committee directed the Membership Committee to enhance the value of Army and Navy Club membership for all of our members, Regular and Associate; Resident and Non-Resident; and across all demographics. The clubwide survey will ultimately drive the effort, but the Committee has already undertaken initiatives to add-value to your membership. Reciprocal Clubs. We have 200 reciprocal clubs; 105 US Clubs in 34 states and 95 international clubs across 33 nations. To ensure we have reciprocity with the right clubs in the right locations, the Committee, aided by the staff, reviewed all of our reciprocal clubs and our reciprocity coverage around the globe. With this information, we created a list of target cities and then a list of target clubs in those cities to be evaluated for our reciprocal club program. Additionally, we reviewed the Platinum Clubs of America and the World to identify other target clubs. With the staff's help, we are reviewing these candidate clubs and expect to start adding clubs to the program in September. The Virtual Club. Our clubhouse and exceptional dining and hospitality will always be the Club’s focal point. Unfortunately, none of us can make it to the Club as often as we’d like, so we’re endeavoring to enhance the "Virtual Club". For instance, for members who cannot make a specific book forum, the staff is now recording book forums and posting the recordings on our website. Similarly, for members who’d like to connect with other members who live near them, we’re encouraging members to update their Member Directory profiles. The Club is adding additional merchandise to the Club store and is making purchasing easier. Additionally, we're in the process of creating our social media footprint (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) and we're also exploring opportunities to have Club hosted events in areas outside of the National Capital Region.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT / MEMBERSHIP

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT HONORABLE ROBERT STEPHEN POYDASHEFF OUR HONORABLE MEMBER FROM GEORGIA By: Col James A. Bracken, USMC (Ret.) Vice President & Club Historian

O

ne of the pleasures of writing an occasional Member Spotlight article is in meeting and speaking with members who seem to embrace life and the joys it brings. This month's focus, Colonel Bob Poydasheff, USA (Ret.), epitomizes that positive approach. Bob, born in the Bronx, is a Citadel and Tulane Law School graduate who in time added a Master's Degree in International Relations from Boston University. He was an infantry officer for his first six years of his Army career, but when the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) was new, the need for trained lawyers took precedence and he was designated as an Army JAG. In 1979, 24 years after being commissioned, a new set of orders awaited Bob. Stacy, his wife, said she did not want to go back to yet another tour in Washington, DC. He agreed and retired. Their favorite tour had been at Fort Benning, so they settled into a home in nearby Columbus, Georgia. It appears he did not have much of an adjustment problem. He took a fine position as a senior Vice President at Sun Trust Bank of West Georgia. In 1995 he retired from the bank and went on to start his own law practice. One year later he was elected to the City Council and in 2003 he was elected Mayor of Columbus, the second largest city in Georgia. He served with distinction until 2007. It is highly likely the citizens of Columbus will have a difficult time forgetting him. It seems they named a city street, Poydasheff Court, in his honor. Bob, who is a Knight of the Golden Circle at our Club, joined in 1964. He has been both a resident and non-resident member and during a Washington tour he served on our Board of Governors. He travels to our city at least twice a year and when he does he takes full advantage of our facilities. He values our reciprocal relationships and uses them whenever he can, mostly in Europe and New York City. Let me quote the Colonel, "Because our Club is superb, all non-resident members should constitute a 'sales force' and talk about our benefits to others." Along with that note he forwarded an application for membership from an officer at Fort Benning. Thanks, Bob, and keep them coming!

THE ANDREW J. GOODPASTER AWARD

BOOK FORUM Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam by Mark Bowden

The Special Events Committee Presents: The Andrew J. Goodpaster Award honoring General John M. Keane, USA (Ret.) Tuesday, July 17, 2018 Reception 6:00 pm Price $10 per person The American Veterans Center will present General John M. Keane, USA (Ret.) with the Andrew J. Goodpaster Award. The Goodpaster Award is presented to American business leaders, politicians, military leaders and others who have served our nation in exemplary ways and like General Goodpaster, have exhibited great courage, selfless service, patriotism and leadership in their lives and careers. About the Recipient General John M. "Jack" Keane, USA (Ret.) was the former Vice Chief of Staff to the Army. General Keane completed 37 years of military service to his country culminating in his appointment as Acting Chief of Staff and Vice Chief of Staff of the US Army. General Keane began his military career as a commissioned officer from Fordham University. His career includes command of the famed 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and the legendary 18th Airborne Corps, the Army’s largest war fighting organization. BOOK FORUM Hellfire Boys: The Birth of the U.S. Chemical Warfare Service and the Race for the World's Deadliest Weapons by Theo Emery Tuesday, July 31, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person Largely forgotten in the confines of history, the development of the U.S. Chemical Warfare Service in 1917 left an indelible imprint on WWI. This small yet powerful division, along with the burgeoning Bureau of Mines, assembled research and military units devoted solely to chemical weaponry, outfitting regiments with hastily made gas-resistant uniforms and recruiting scientists and engineers from around the world into the fight. Theo Emery brilliantly shows how WWI quickly spiraled into a chemists' war, one led by the companies of young American engineers-turnedsoldiers who would soon become known as the Hellfire Boys.

Tuesday, September 11, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person The first battle book from Mark Bowden since his #1 New York Times best-seller Black Hawk Down, Hue 1968 is the story of the centerpiece of the Tet Offensive and a turning point in the American War in Vietnam. With unprecedented access to war archives in the U.S. and Vietnam and interviews with participants from both sides, Bowden narrates each stage of this crucial battle through multiple viewpoints. Played out over 24 days and ultimately costing 10,000 lives, the Battle of Hue was by far the bloodiest of the entire war. When it ended, the American debate was never again about winning, only about how to leave. Hue 1968 is a gripping and moving account of this pivotal moment.

BOOK FORUM Rampage: MacArthur, Yamashita, and the Battle of Manila by James M. Scott Tuesday, September 25, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person The definitive history of one of the most brutal campaigns of the war in the Pacific. By early 1945, the war against Japan was at its height and General Douglas MacArthur began to fulfill his vow of liberating the Philippines. He was already planning his own victory parade down Dewey Boulevard in Manila, a city he loved dearly. But the Japanese had other plans. While their command had agreed to abandon Manila after the fall of Leyte, a rogue Japanese admiral instructed his troops to fight to the death. Based on extensive research, war-crimes testimony, after-action reports, and survivor interviews, Rampage recounts one of the most heartbreaking chapters of Pacific war history.

LIBRARY TRUST FUND / TRUST UPDATE

A LETTER FROM THE LIBRARY TRUST FUND CHAIRMAN The Army and Navy Club Library Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity. Its IRS-approved charter sets forth the following responsibilities: to collect, restore, and display militarythemed artworks and books for the edification and pleasure of its members and to enrich public understanding of the numerous books, historical treasures, and artifacts in its possession.

World War I Event and Art Exhibit A First Look at the National World War I Memorial July 19, 2018 at 6:30 pm, Ballroom The Library Trust and Special Events Committees have partnered with the World War I Centennial Commission to provide Club members a first look at the forthcoming — and still in development — World War I Memorial on the National Mall. The exhibition tells the story of the 100-year journey to memorialize U.S. participation in the "Great War." The exhibit features architectural models of the future memorial, a groundbreaking sculptural maquette by memorial sculptor Sabin Howard, historic photographs, architectural drawings, and other art objects. Please join us for the exhibition opening on Thursday, July 19 at 6:30 pm. The Commission's Executive Director, Edwin Fountain, and prize-winning memorial architect Joe Weishaar will each address us and field our questions regarding the memorial generally and the sculpture specifically. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served. The exhibit will remain at the Club through the fall, and will conclude with an October evening lecture by sculptor Sabin Howard, the country's foremost practitioner of modern classical sculpture. Roy Boehm Archive Digitization We have completed digitization of the private archives of Roy Boehm, First Navy Seal, a nine-volume collection of photographs, unclassified military records, citations, personal writings, news clippings, and other items of historical interest, in which Boehm documented his Navy service and founding of the Navy Seals. Digital annotation and archiving will be complete by the end of the summer. We anticipate sharing this historic archive with our members and the public through our collections website. The Roy Boehm archive was donated to the Library Trust in 2010 by the Boehm estate's executor, John Weisman. John is a well known author (fiction and non-fiction best sellers) who specializes in the Intelligence Community and Special Operations. He was a longtime friend of Boehm. John is a Club member, and oh by the way, a key member of the Library Trust Committee.

Library Trust Partnerships A primary goal in developing our public Library Trust collections website (Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org) was to ensure that the Club's art collection remains a lasting educational tool and a resource for military and historical societies, museums, and institutions. We are pleased to report that, though only a few months old, our collections website has already attracted the attention of several major institutions. They have contacted us regarding possible loans, reproductions, and exhibitions from our collections. We look forward to providing more details with you soon, but for now we share with you this evidence that your personal interest and continuing contributions help to accomplish one of the missions established by the Club’s founders in the nineteenth century and captured in the Library Trust's Collection Management Plan, "... Club operations shall include the preservation and the ongoing development of its books, furniture, and art collections for the esthetic and the intellectual benefit of future generations." Grant Writing Assistance The greatest privilege of Army and Navy Club membership is the camaraderie and community of fellow Club members. We want to benefit from our "home-court advantage" by seeking the support of Club members with grant-writing experience who may be willing to advise the Committee regarding potential grant applications. If you can assist, please contact Ariana Pierce at apierce@armynavyclub.org. Thanks again for your continuing support of the Library Trust. Without your engagement, generosity, and support, none of this would be possible. Our projects are consistent with our mission and obligations as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity. Your regular monthly and quarterly donations that accompany dues and associated payments enable us to continue to improve the collection and plan similar upgrades to our book collection. We also greatly appreciate the personal checks that many of you deliver when you depart after an enjoyable overnight stay at the Club. Please consider donating to The Army and Navy Club Library Trust to help us to do even more.

THE BEAN SOUP MUTIN Y (ALMOST)

We do not have a documented history of how and when the bean soup first appeared on the menu here on Farragut Square, but we have found mention of it from some staff notes from the Club Secretary in the early 1920s. However, we do know for certain that when it did arrive, the bean soup proved to be so much in demand by members and guests that it has been served every day since. Our treasured recipe calls for the freshest ingredients and "high end" beans, and it takes a good deal of time to prepare. Therein lies this tale...it seems that in early 2005 our respected chef decamped for a new kitchen in California. Interviews of prospective replacements were held and in due time an experienced, highly regarded chef was chosen to lead our kitchen. Our members seemed quite pleased with the new leader in our kitchen and one could sense the buzz as diners began enjoying his offerings. But disaster quickly struck! It seems our new chef believed in a more "modern" approach to crafting the bean soup. We know now that he felt too much time was being spent in its preparation and ordered the soup to be made from a commercial base, wherein one just added water, herbs and spices, and stirred. We also had a relatively new Club President at that time, LtGen Bill Maloney, USMC (Ret.), who had served the Club faithfully, first as a committee member and subsequently on the Board of Governors. The General was looking forward to an interesting and productive term shepherding the Club, but was he ever surprised as the mumbling about the new bean soup recipe turned into organized dissent. Individuals sent notes, delegations of disappointed diners came to his door to personally complain and it was quickly obvious that nimble and decisive action was needed to save the day and keep our members returning to our dining room.

To the kitchen the President went, interviewing the soup maker, the wait staff and then our Chef, who nervously explained his reasoning and justification in using a prepared soup mix. Before General Maloney realized it, he was becoming an authority on bean soup. It appears the original bean soup recipe used by our Navy in the 19th century included tomatoes, and this was the standard Navy recipe up until WWII when tomatoes became difficult to procure. Our new Chef decided that tomatoes were superfluous, and wanted to more closely follow the U.S. Senate recipe that eschews tomatoes. He saw that a prepared bean soup mix, sans tomatoes, was now available and knowing how everyone extolled the Senate bean soup, he engineered the change. As expected, our leader issued quick and decisive instructions to the kitchen and since that day we have been able to enjoy a bean soup that is made the correct Navy way, with tomatoes, with care and from scratch. We still have diners today that mention General Maloney's name with reverence. Some suggested we should rename the recipe "Navy and Marine Soup" in his honor. By his courageous actions he snuffed out the makings of a mutiny and saved the day for all of us bean soup lovers. â—„
