DISPATCH A PUBLIC ATION OF THE ARMY AND NAV Y CLUB AUGUST 2018

CONTENTS

Letter from the President MG Daniel V. Wright, USA (Ret.), President / dwright@armynavyclub.org

Welcome to August and the "dog days" of summer! It is usually hot and steamy here in DC and somewhat sluggish. As a result, the Club tends to use the slow months to upgrade and maintain the clubhouse. This year is no different. For those of you who have recently visited, you will have noticed the beautiful new stone driveway in front of the building. It really brings a touch of elegance to our already handsome and historic exterior! This month we will also renovate 6 of the remaining old hotel bathrooms. They will be in the same style as the previously renovated rooms, and we are hoping to finish the final few at the start of 2019. Our Boardroom is getting a facelift as well, which includes adding some much-needed technological advances. The Boardroom is primarily used for monthly committee and Board of Governors meetings, but it is also an available space that may be rented through our catering department. The upgraded room will boast a large flat screen TV, top of the line AV, built in cabinetry, and an updated display of past Club presidents. This room is only available by member reservation and for a small fee — with the new amenities, it will be more than worth it!

ON THE COVER

Photograph of The Army and Navy Building's Rooftop Garden.

After all this work is finished the busy events season will start up again. To kick it off is a Lunch and a Lecture on Friday, September 7, with Club Member General Norton "Norty" Schwartz, former Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and his wife Suzie who will be discussing the new book they coauthored, Journey. Friday, September 21, our Food and Beverage Director, Patrick Grady, will host another one of his very popular wine tastings. This one will feature several choice Spanish wines, complete with traditional tapas. ¡Muy bien! I hope to see you there! Then, on Saturday, September 22, the Club will host its first (maybe ever!) Afternoon Tea. You can find more information on page 13 of this issue. The staff expects it to be a sell-out, so you must reserve your spot now! While there’s a lot to look forward to, I hope you are taking the time to enjoy the rest of your summer. I look forward to seeing you around the Club soon!

PAYING IT FORWARD Engaged employees are the lifeblood of the success of clubs. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT / MEMBERSHIP

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Lieutenant Commander Jay H. Gaul, IV, USNR A Spark Plug By: Col James A. Bracken, USMC (Ret.) Vice President & Club Historian

O

ver the past few years several young Navy officers have joined the Club as they left active duty, transitioned to the Navy Reserves and began establishing themselves in their civilian careers. Among those joining was Lieutenant Commander Jay H. Gaul, IV, USNR. Jay personifies the meaning of "Gentleman and Scholar." A 2005 Magna Cum Laude Hampden-Sydney Graduate, he spent his junior year abroad at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. As a Navy Supply Corps officer, he served aboard the USS Wasp, deployed for a year to Djibouti, East Africa and served as the Director of Logistics for Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. Since coming to Washington, and after release from active duty, he has received a Master's Degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University. Jay has been a very active Club member since 2008. Three years ago he joined our House Committee where his creativity, planning acumen and diligence have been most welcome. He has been a catalyst for action and a font of new ideas for the committee, and through his efforts the Club has inaugurated an Annual Daiquiri Party, which is now in its third year. In conjunction with this event, Gaul commissioned and donated a portrait of Club member Rear Admiral Lucius Johnson, the Navy medical officer who brought the rum drink recipe home from Cuba in 1909 and introduced it to the United States in The Army and Navy Club bar. Jay was also the coordinator for the acquisition and unveiling of the Admiral Joseph James "Jocko" Clark, USN portrait, generously donated by several Navy officers, which hangs with quiet distinction on the Club's second floor. Jay and his wife Lois live and work in Washington, DC and enjoy the city's amenities. One of their weekend pleasures has been to take tea at such local hotels as the Willard, the St. Regis, and the Ritz Carlton. Inspired by that great tradition of afternoon tea, Jay embarked on a study for the House Committee, detailing what he found to be the basis for the success of the afternoon teas he and Lois have enjoyed on their hotel visits. He subsequently recommended our Club consider offering, on occasion, it's own afternoon tea. The notion has generated enthusiasm and this fall our Club will initiate and test an afternoon tea event for our members. The Club is indeed fortunate and welcomes the participation of young, enthusiastic members of Jay Gaul's caliber. They are a wealth of fresh ideas and a source of energy for bringing those ideas to fruition. â—„

Friday, September 7, 2018 Registration/Lunch 12:30 pm Presentation 1 pm Price $24++ per person An uncensored account of General Schwartz's term as the wartime US Air Force Chief of Staff under Presidents Bush and Obama.

Friday, September 21, 2018 Registration/Lunch 11:30 pm* Presentation 12:15 pm Price $24++ per person "Prodigiously researched and engrossing." —New York Times Book Review

Journey is a book about leadership. It is packed with the General's lessons from life in the military: breaking the mold, flying uncharted airspace, battles from Iraq to the Pentagon, Afghanistan to Congress. It's about pushing limits in an era of diminishing budgets and fewer resources to fuel the furnace of innovation. He chronicles the phenomenal story of the evolution of the U.S. special operations, such as what was achieved when taking down Bin Laden. The General discusses the controversial new technologies that have been allowing America to build new capabilities in remote aircraft and cyber warfare. Many believe General Schwartz's greatest legacy will be the dramatic acceleration of the "drone" program. He is a staunch advocate for it and this book will explain why.

Guest of Honor Ms. Dot Bruce, one of the celebrated Code Girls Recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than ten thousand women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of code-breaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, bestselling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment. *Please note the different start time.

BOOK FORUM Book Forum: "Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam" by Mark Bowden Tuesday, September 11, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person The first battle book from Mark Bowden since his #1 New York Times best-seller Black Hawk Down, Hue 1968 is the story of the centerpiece of the Tet Offensive and a turning point in the American War in Vietnam. With unprecedented access to war archives in the U.S. and Vietnam and interviews with participants from both sides, Bowden narrates each stage of this crucial battle through multiple viewpoints. Played out over 24 days and ultimately costing 10,000 lives, the Battle of Hue was by far the bloodiest of the entire war. When it ended, the American debate was never again about winning, only about how to leave. Hue 1968 is a gripping and moving account of this pivotal moment.

BOOK FORUM Book Forum: "Rampage: MacArthur, Yamashita, and the Battle of Manila" by James M. Scott Tuesday, September 25, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person The definitive history of one of the most brutal campaigns of the war in the Pacific. By early 1945, the war against Japan was at its height and General Douglas MacArthur began to fulfill his vow of liberating the Philippines. He was already planning his own victory parade down Dewey Boulevard in Manila, a city he loved dearly. But the Japanese had other plans. While their command had agreed to abandon Manila after the fall of Leyte, a rogue Japanese admiral instructed his troops to fight to the death. Based on extensive research, war-crimes testimony, after-action reports, and survivor interviews, Rampage recounts one of the most heartbreaking chapters of Pacific war history.

Its IRS-approved charter sets forth the following responsibilities: to collect, restore, and display military-themed artworks and books for the edification and pleasure of its members and to enrich public understanding of the numerous books, historical treasures, and artifacts in its possession.

The Library Trust Collections website, Collections.ArmyNavyClub. org, draws new interest on a daily basis. Members and nonmembers alike enjoy the archival advantages and high-quality photographs throughout the website. Thank you! Thanks for your valuable comments and suggestions. The Library Trust continues to improve the website based on your feedback, and we thank you for reaching out to let us know ways we can improve this exciting, ongoing project. Your continuing interest and concern for the substance and the accuracy of the Collections website helps to make our unique collection available to all who are interested. General Benjamin Oliver Davis, Jr. You will see our latest addition in the Club the moment you enter: a sculptural maquette of Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Oliver Davis, Jr., on loan from Mr. Conway Jones. Mr. Jones proposed to West Point donation of a statue of Lt. Col Davis, to be placed outside the new, eponymously named Davis barracks. The approval process is ongoing, which gives us this opportunity to display the model of the proposed statue. Mr. Jones retained the renowned American sculptor, Steven Whyte, to produce the maquette. We have included a photo (left), and you can also see it under the "Featured Exhibitions" tab on our Collections website. Time Magazine Cover Portraits Next up for the website: to expand the full collection of Time Magazine covers online, including those that are not on display in the Time Covers exhibition in the B-1 elevator lobby. You may recall that RADM John Faigle, USCG (Ret.) developed and funded the exhibit. He served the Club for years on several committees and on the Board of Governors, culminating in his three years as Club President from 2010-2013. His initiative and generosity gave us the impressive Time Cover Exhibition, spotlighting 40 Club members who were featured on the cover of Time Magazine. Maj Gen Joe Lynch, then a member of the Board of Governors, secured the acquisition of the remaining 50+ covers that feature Club members. General Lynch’s initiative in obtaining the other covers was enhanced by the generosity of then-Club President Brig Gen Thomas Hemingway who personally financed the framing of the new acquisitions. By the end of September, Club members and others will be able to explore the more than 90 cover portraits featuring members of the ANC by visiting our Collections website. Roy Boehm Archive on Collections Website The Roy Boehm (First SEAL) archive will go live on the website by the end of September. We have previously described the nine-volume 18" x 18" archival scrapbooks compiled by Boehm himself after 14

his retirement from the U.S. Navy. The Boehm archive was donated to the Club by John Weisman, author and Boehm estate executor, who is now a member of the Library Trust Committee. The photo included here (right) reflects the scrapbook design and size. The other photo (left) depicts a page from one of the scrapbooks. There are nearly 700 pages in the nine-volume archive, so you can imagine why the Boehm archive may be of interest to researchers. World War I Centennial Commission Exhibit and Discussion On July 19, we opened our current exhibition, "100 Years in the Making: A First Look at The National World War I Memorial," in collaboration with the World War I Centennial Commission to commemorate the centennial anniversary of WWI. The opening night program was a successful Club event, featuring discussions by Edwin Fountain, Vice Chair of the Commission, and prize-winning memorial architect, Joe Weishar. Sabine Howard, the memorial sculptor, was also present to meet guests and discuss his approach to the project. The exhibit will remain at the Club through the fall, and will conclude with an evening presentation by Mr. Howard, the country's foremost practitioner of modern classical sculpture. We'll have more to report next month. Grant Writing Assistance The greatest privilege of the ANC membership is the camaraderie and community of fellow Club members. We want to benefit from our "home-court advantage" by seeking the support of Club members with grant-writing experience who may be willing to advise the Committee regarding potential grant applications. If you can assist, please contact Ariana Pierce at apierce@armynavyclub.org to learn more. Thanks again for your continuing support of the Library Trust. Without your engagement, generosity, and support, none of this would be possible. Our projects are consistent with our mission and obligations as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity. Your regular monthly and quarterly donations that accompany dues and associated payments enable us to continue to improve the collection and plan similar upgrades to our book collection. We also greatly appreciate the personal checks that many of you deliver when you depart after an enjoyable overnight at the Club. Please consider donating to The Army and Navy Club Library Trust to help us to do even more. â—„

ne of our most colorful, jovial and genial members, who possessed a unique gift for friendship was Major Archibald Butt, USA. He also, unfortunately, was one of over 1500 people who perished when the Titanic sank on 14 April 1912. The Titanic disaster was an overwhelming tragedy and Butt's death was a particularly hard loss for his boss, President William Howard Taft and also for Taft's predecessor, President Theodore Roosevelt. "Archie," as he was known to all, served as a military aide to both Roosevelt and Taft. A Southerner, Butt was a young journalist posted to Washington, DC at the end of the 19th century representing a coalition of southern newspapers. With the advent of the Spanish American War he received an appointment as a LT in the U.S. Volunteers in 1898 and served in Cuba and Washington, DC. He accepted a regular commission as a captain in 1901 and was sent to the Philippines to serve as an Army quartermaster. He joined the Army and Navy Club in Manila and before long served as its Secretary playing a major role in the creation of the Military Order of the Carabao. Butt was next assigned to Washington and from there to Havana. On return from Cuba in 1908 he was selected to be an aide to President Theodore Roosevelt. Archie, a "picture of Southern chivalry," joined our Club in 1901, visited most every day while stationed in Washington and often entertained his military and civilian friends in our dining room and cocktail lounge. After all, as he was wont to say, "...my Club is just around the corner from the White House." He and President Roosevelt and the Roosevelt family had a very special relationship and, although described as "stout," Archie was able to keep pace with the rigorous lifestyle of the President. When Taft followed Roosevelt to the White House, Archie was retained as his aide. Again he served the President well, was promoted to Major, and within a short time became indispensable to the entire Taft family.

Archie, ever the journalist, corresponded almost daily with his mother and, after she passed, with his sister-in-law, Clara. These letters, published long after Butt’s death, document his time with Roosevelt (published in 1924) and with Taft (published in 1930). They provide rare insight into the private lives and daily events and actions of the two presidents as well as documenting Butt’s role in the everyday activities, both official and unofficial, of the White House. (These volumes are available in our Club Library). Presidents Roosevelt and Taft were close friends, but by the end of Taft’s first term the exigencies and pressures of politics frayed their friendship. This contest of egos and ambition between his two masters weighed heavily on Major Butt and he subsequently asked for a leave of absence with permission to go "beyond the seas" before the Republican Party primary elections. Reluctantly granted six weeks’ vacation by the President, Butt went to Europe and at the end of his sojourn boarded the Titanic in Southampton, England for his return voyage. On 14 April 1912 he and friends were playing bridge in the first class smoking room when the ship struck an iceberg. Newspaper accounts of the disaster portray Archie as shepherding women and children into lifeboats and beating back men who were attempting to commandeer them. President Taft was reported as saying, "I never had any idea that Archie was saved at all. As soon as I heard that 1,500 people went down, I knew he went down too. He was a soldier and always on deck where he belonged." Archie's close friend and Club member, Major Francis Millett, a civil war veteran and artist, shared his doomed fate on the Titanic. Neither body was recovered. The two were memorialized with the Butt-Millet Fountain built on the White House Ellipse, the construction of which was authorized by Congress and privately funded soon after the two men’s passing. That the fountain was the very first memorial monument to be built on the Ellipse is indicative of the respect Archie Butt engendered. ◄ Butt-Millet Memorial Fountain at President's Park (White House Ellipse)
