Overall, we are extremely pleased with the results! While there is too much information to cover in my short letter here, you will be receiving a condensed version of the report this month. In the meantime, I can tell you that the overall satisfaction scores of the Club are encouraging – with 85% of our members indicating “extremely satisfied/satisfied” with the Club as a whole.

While the survey tells us we’re moving in the right direction, there are areas that were identified where we know we can do better. Some will take more time than others but, under the direction of your Board and Committees, the General Manger and Club staff are on it!

Summer vacations are barely over and the Club is already back in full swing. At the end of July, the Board of Governors (BOG) and Club staff received the results of the membership survey that began in the spring. The BOG’s summer homework was to review all of the comments and data in August so we could hit the ground running right after Labor Day.
One recurring theme was how to help new members get involved and feel connected to the Club. Many suggested more Clubs within the Club. The Special Events Committee and the Membership and Marketing Department heard you loud and clear, which has resulted in them developing a step-by-step process detailing how members can start their own successful Clubs within the Club! You can refer to page 6 of this issue for more information.

This is just one small step towards improving your Army and Navy Club. We appreciate all of the feedback that was given in the survey, and every comment and concern will be carefully considered. There will certainly be more to come! And speaking of more, this is one of the busiest Septembers the Club has seen in a while. There are a number of new events scheduled - the live podcast recording on September 6 with the Bombshell Girls; the Rooftop and Eagle Grill Happy Hour on September 12; and the Afternoon Tea on September 22. All of them appear to be exciting, interesting, and good fun! Then, on Sunday October 7, the Club has arranged for members to tour Marjorie Merriweather Post’s Hillwood Estate. It promises to be inviting! The Army and Navy Club is working hard to ensure that it offers quality programs and opportunities for all of its members while never shorting on our mainstays of delicious dining, outstanding facilities, and superb service! You, the Members, are the lifeblood of this fine Club, and we appreciate your loyalty and dedication to it. Although the survey asking for your individual input is complete, you should know that you MAY ALWAYS provide input to the BOG and Club staff. Thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

Letter from the Marketing & Communications Manager Ariana Pierce / apierce@armynavyclub.org
If there's one thing that private clubs and social media have in common it's the ability to connect people through their common interests. As a private Five Star Platinum Club, we intend to do just that, and enhance the member-club connection. The growing popularity of social media has reached the private club industry and with the right strategy we hope to take advantage of that popularity in order to support our mission of driving the member-club experience. With our Club constantly reevaluating and improving its membership strategy, the Membership and Marketing team, with guidance from the Board, decided it was time for the ANC to establish a social media presence. The overarching goal of using platforms like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn is to strengthen the member community and to drive involvement in club events and activities. The National Club Association couldn't have said it better, "When members feel they can interact with their fellow members and the club itself anytime and anywhere, it helps the club become less of just a destination and more of an ever-present community." With a defined social media presence, the Club is excited to widen the member experience and involvement. Members are now able to share their experiences, connect with other members, and discover new and exciting goings-on at the Club. We hope to further the conversation between members and the Club and drive the overall member engagement one click at a time. Stay connected by following us on Social Media!

CLUB NEWS / CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB
THE CLUB IS EXCITED TO ENHANCE THE ANC MEMBER EXPERIENCE BY INTRODUCING
CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB
Meetup s
CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB offer Army and Navy Club members an opportunity to connect, meet and socialize with fellow members who share the same interests. MEETUPS are the first step in establishing a Club within the Club. Prior to launching a Club within the Club, the Member must contact the Membership and Marketing Department who will then organize three Club within the Club Meetups. Meetups are organized around one simple idea: getting together with like-minded members who share the same interests and keeping the momentum high on a Club within the Club.
HOW TO FORM A NEW CLUB WITHIN THE CLUB Do you have a great idea for a new Club within the Club but don't know how to get started? Follow the procedures below to begin the process. 1.
Contact the Membership and Marketing Department at apierce@armynavyclub.org to receive the New Club within the Club Application.
2.
Draft the new Club within the Club's mission statement and purpose.
3.
After receiving the one-page application, the Special Events Committee will review it and, if approved, the Membership and Marketing Department will schedule three Club within the Club Meetups. Meetups are organized in order to help establish a Club within the Club. Meetups will be advertised via email and newsletter. At least 10 ANC Members will need to attend a Meetup.
4.
After three successful Meetups, the proposed Club within the Club will be officially established.
We encourage everyone to get involved as we help create a space where Members can design and run their own specialty clubs like a Chess Club or Runner's Club. Members decide whether they want to meet on a weekly or monthly basis. Below is an example of a successful Club within the Club.
FOX CONNER SOCIETY • A CLUB WITHIN THE CLUB • The Fox Conner Society is focused on history, national security, strategy, leadership and current geopolitical and military events. It is a mix of active and retired military officers and professionals in the defense and foreign affairs communities. The goal of the Fox Conner Society is to "polish our intellect" and develop leaders using the model of its namesake: MG Fox Conner, mentor to Eisenhower, Patton and Marshall. The Fox Conner Society gathers once a month for drinks, a round table discussion and dinner. The Fox Conner Society was organized by COL Thomas Woloszyn, USA (Ret.). To get his feedback and pointers on how to create a successful CWC you can email him at foxconnersociety@gmail.com.

LIBRARY TRUST FUND / LTF UPDATE
The Library Trust Collections Website, Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org, draws new interest on a daily basis. Members and non-members alike enjoy the archival advantages and high quality photographs throughout the website. EXHIBITIONS August was slow at the Club, as always. BUT — July was spectacular, in large part because of the superb WWI Centennial Commission event on the 19th. The photos you see here attest to the power of the presentations, and the exhibition will remain into November in the John Paul Jones and Iwo Jima Rooms. If you were not able to attend the event, please seize this unique opportunity to enjoy the exhibition. Our exhibition of the Club's finest prints and drawings will remain in the Eagle Grill for the foreseeable future due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback. With the Grill reopening on the 10th of this month, there is even more opportunity to see the exhibit and read about the historic artworks in our collection. The sculptural model of the House of Representatives pediment — above the Eagle Grill bar — continues to generate comments like, "How did the Club obtain the original model from the early 20th century?" Answer: the owner, Creg Howland, has loaned it to the Club for the enjoyment and erudition of our members and guests. Paul Wayland Bartlett, its sculptor, made the pediment in 1908 in his studio in Northeast Washington, DC. It was the very same studio later used by Felix de Weldon, sculptor of the Marine Memorial, as well as many pieces in the Club’s Collection. The sculptural maquette of Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Oliver Davis, Jr., on loan
from Conway Jones, remains in our lobby entrance for another month or two. Mr. Jones retained the renowned American sculptor, Steven Whyte, to produce the maquette. You can read more about all of these exhibitions and displays under the "Featured Exhibitions" tab of our Collections website. In October, two major archived collections will go live on our website. The first is our collection of Time Magazine cover portraits featuring members of The Army and Navy Club. The Roy Boehm archive is the second. Characterizing Boehm as "First Seal" remains controversial, but we recall then-US SOCOM Commander Admiral Eric Olson's comments in our Ballroom at the March 2010 Boehm donation event that Boehm's military service contributions are not diminished by the controversy over who is most deserving of the sobriquet "First SEAL." THREE COMING LIBRARY TRUST EVENTS Sculptor Sabin Howard, who briefly discussed his work on the National World War I Memorial sculpture at our 19 July event, will return to the Club on Monday evening, 15 October for a rich discussion on classical artistic methods in the 21st century. He will talk about his philosophy and artistic methods as a sculptor and provide further detail about his work on "A Soldier's Journey," the centerpiece of the
planned World War I Memorial at Pershing Park. Our third event of this year commemorating the end of the WWI will be a presentation by one of our Library Trust committee members, Rob Dalessandro. On Wednesday evening, 7 November, Dalessandro will address how the nation's Armed Forces grew from 30,000 military personnel to more than 4 million over the course of the war, how the Army and the Navy Departments put it all together, from whence all those people came, and how the U.S. military employed them. Dalessandro was Head of the Army Museum System, then became Director of the Army Center for Military History, and currently serves as Executive Director of the American Battle Monuments Commission. Thanks again for your continuing support of the Library Trust. Without your engagement, generosity, and support, none of this would be possible. Our projects are consistent with our mission and obligations as a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt entity. Your regular monthly and quarterly donations that accompany dues and associated payments enable us to continue to improve the collection and plan similar upgrades to our book collection. We also greatly appreciate the personal checks that many of you deliver when you depart after an enjoyable overnight at the Club. Please consider donating to The Army and Navy Club Library Trust to help us to do even more. We need your support. Thanks!

COLONEL JOHN E. GREENWOOD, USMC (1927-2015) n the early 1980s, “Young Turk” military thinkers were questioning the way the U.S. fought ground wars. They were very vocal about the need to end the “two up, one back, high diddle, diddle, right up the middle” set piece approach to fighting battles. They were known as “maneuverists” and key top-level USA and USMC officers were uncomfortable with their theories.
In 1980, Colonel John Greenwood, upon retirement from active Marine Corps service, became the Editor of the Marine Corps Gazette, a monthly magazine with offices in Quantico, Virginia. His background certainly prepared him for the task. He had joined the Corps at age 17 and he received a fleet appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, and graduated in 1950 (his first order of business upon graduation was joining The Army and Navy Club). He served with distinction in Korea, and in Vietnam commanded through the regimental level and on two separate occasions commanded a Marine Expeditionary Unit. During his 30 years of service he also taught at the Naval Academy and served as an aide to Lt. Gen. Victor “Brute” Krulak, USMC and as a military assistant to the Honorable John W. Warner Jr., Secretary of the Navy. At the Gazette he saw that his role was to publish articles that “would keep Marines awake at night” and in doing so he kept alive the controversial ideas of the maneuverists. The Gazette became “the vehicle that continued stirring intellectual fervor throughout the Marine Corps.” Greenwood did this through publishing article after article on maneuver warfare, along with “spirited rebuttal from senior Marine Corps Officers.” In 1987, General Alfred M. Gray, Jr., USMC (a member of our Club) was appointed as the 29th Commandant of the Marine Corps. General Gray embraced the concept of “fighting the enemy, not the terrain” and the Corps began in earnest to train and equip major units to implement the art of maneuver warfare. This paid dividends in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, when Marine Corps and Army Forces, bypassing multiple Iraqi strong points, took Baghdad 30 days after the invasion.
John Greenwood’s 30 years of active service, 20 years as a very successful editor, and a member of our Club for 65 years (he was designated a Knight of the Golden Circle after reaching 50 years of membership), earned him the admiration and respect of many. He was also admired for the private, family side of his life. He and his wife Margaret sired five sons (Eric, Tom, Paul, Alan, and Dan), all of whom joined the military, four to the U.S. Marine Corps and one to the U.S. Coast Guard. Each in turn joined our Club, as have two of his grandsons, Sam and Edson. The family has shared many reminiscences of their times at the Club as they were growing up. The history of America and its military, as reflected in the Club’s membership, art and artifacts, was their father’s joy. He relished going around the Club when entertaining and sharing historical insights with his guests. When touring, he always pointed out the portrait of General James Harbord, USA that hangs in the Ballroom. General Harbord, who in WWI commanded the 4th Marine Brigade during the battles for Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood, is held in particular high regard by all Marines. John’s particular delight was the trophy table in our Library. The table was thrown up as a barrier by U.S. Army officer Club members when insurrectionists attacked a U.S. position in the Philippines during the SpanishAmerican War. He wove a memorable story that he shared as often as possible.

His sons relish the memory of their father often coming home from the Club after a night of dancing and telling them that when he and their mother danced, members would often mistake him for Fred Astaire. John Greenwood, an example of one fine American. ◄ September 2018
