A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT MG DANIEL V. WRIGHT, USA (RET.)

dwright@armynavyclub.org

With all of the exciting happenings going on at the Club these past few months, October has sneaked up on us, and we are rounding the corner to the holiday season. Our ever-diligent staff is in the process of finalizing the details to ensure that every holiday gathering goes off without a hitch! You can find all of the information for this year's festivities within the foldout cover of this issue. Before we get to the Holidays, though, on the front of this issue is a picture of Major General Robert H. Scales, Jr., 44th Commandant of the U.S. Army War College, well-known author, insightful commentator on military affairs, and a Great American! General Scales is this year's keynote speaker for our Annual Salute to the Armed Forces Gala on November 3. Every year, the Club's Special Events Committee invites a distinguished General or Flag officer to deliver a stirring address, alternating speakers from each military branch. This year we recognize the Army with our distinguished speaker, but more importantly we recognize all Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Coast Guardsmen, and Marines, past, present, and everywhere! The Gala is the premier event during the fall season and I look forward to sharing the evening with you.

However, if you're still looking for events to attend in October we have plenty! On Friday, October 12, the Special Events Committee, as part of their lunch and lecture series and in conjunction with Council of American Ambassadors and the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, is hosting a luncheon with Charlie Cook. Mr. Cook is the editor and publisher of The Cook Political Report and political analyst for the National Journal Group. As a known political prognosticator with an unbiased view of the future and the midterm elections coming up on November 6, this is sure to be a most interesting and enlightening luncheon. Then there is the Scotch Tasting. The one scheduled for October 19 sold out so quickly, as our liquor tastings usually do, that we added another one the following week on Thursday, October 25. I encourage you to sign up now before that one sells out, too. Getting back to the holiday season, let me remind you that we will soon be requesting contributions for our Employee Holiday Fund. While it is still early, I know you want to be able to plan for an appropriate contribution to show your gratitude for the great work our wonderful staff accomplishes everyday throughout the year. Thanks for your support!

Our new private bathrooms feature designer toiletries, hairdryers, bottled water, slippers, fluffy bath robes and chocolates! Our room rates remain FAR BELOW COMPARABLE ROOMS in our neighborhood. By the way – the view of Farragut Square is amazing too! NEW MENUS IN MEMBER DINING

Your Executive Chef, Kirk DeLoach, with his creative and hard-working culinary team, have introduced new lower priced menus, with more healthy options, in all of our restaurants and bars. While never forgetting the historic nature of food here at the ANC, they continue to deliver one of the foremost culinary experiences in Washington, DC. NEW DATA FROM THE JUNE/JULY MEMBER SURVEY

Your current Club leadership continues to consider renovations and construction of new facilities in many different areas of the Club based on your valued survey input. A comprehensive Strategic Plan will be communicated to the membership prior to the April Annual Meeting. The data from our surveys over the past ten years has been used to make significant and meaningful improvements to the ANC’s offerings and facilities that will be consistent for 2019 and beyond. Please come and see us soon!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT A FAIR AND JUST MEMBER

COL SCOTT W. STUCKY, USAF (RET.) By: James A. McTague Club Member and Author

C

ol Scott W. Stucky, USAF (Ret.), a Club member since 1981, is one of the leading military jurists in the country. Col Stucky has enjoyed a long and distinguished career, beginning as a judge advocate in the Air Force and continuing to his current position as Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. In June, the Supreme Court upheld one of Col Stucky’s appellate decisions by a vote of seven to two. Col Stucky and his wife Jean, who is also a lawyer, take advantage of the Club primarily for dining and entertainment. He recalls life at the Club before its last major renovation in 1987. “James Jesus Angleton used to hang out in the old dusty reading room,” he remembers. Angleton was the famously paranoid chief of counterintelligence at the Central Intelligence Agency from 1954 to 1975. “Another time I was sitting in the old barbershop, waiting for a haircut, when I realized that the ancient guy in the chair was none other than Ira Eaker, commander of the 8th Air Force in World War II. Still another regular was Charlie Bennett, a Representative from Florida and senior member of the Armed Services Committee, who had fought the Japanese as a guerrilla in the Pacific and been awarded the Silver Star. That’s the kind of place it was then.” Col Stucky attended Wichita State University, where he served as student body president and participated in the University’s ROTC program. He graduated from the university as a commissioned second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve. After earning a juris doctor degree from Harvard Law School, and he went on active duty in the Air Force in 1973 as a judge advocate. Upon leaving active duty, the reserve officer joined a private law firm in Washington, DC and then became a branch chief of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In 1983, Col Stucky became the civilian legislative counsel for the Department of the Air Force, and in 1996 moved to the Senate Committee on the Armed Services as its general counsel. There he worked on 10 consecutive national defense authorization acts. Along the way, Col Stucky earned a master of laws degree at George Washington University. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2003 with a ceremony in the Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office Building. President George W. Bush appointed Col Stucky to the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces on December 12, 2006. He became Chief Judge on August 1, 2017. If he hadn’t gone into law, Col Stucky says he would have become a historian, a field in which he has invested much of his private time. His bachelor’s degree from Wichita State was in history, as was the master’s degree he earned from Trinity University. Col Stucky’s love of the subject blossomed into an extensive home library. His favorite historical focuses are U.S. history from 1815 to the end of the Civil War, and British history before 1945. Col Stucky is famous among Club members for the breadth of his reading and his intelligent, provocative analysis of world events. One friend says, “When you go for a beer with Scott, you get a brew and a seminar.” The Supreme Court case is Ortiz v. United States. ◄ October 2018

Gather around with old and new friends for lunch, dinner or drinks. There is no advanced planning necessary. Stop by, pull up a chair and enjoy the spirit of camaraderie with your fellow members!

MEETUPS are the first step in establishing a Club within the Club. Prior to launching a Club within the Club, the Member must contact the Membership and Marketing Department who will then organize three Club within the Club Meetups. Meetups are organized around one simple idea: getting together with likeminded members who share the same interests and keeping the momentum high on a Club within the Club.

STAY CONNECTED IN OUR EAGLE GRILL CORNER LOUNGE Do you need a place to check emails or catch up on current events? Stop by the Eagle Grill on the B1-Level of the clubhouse. The Corner Lounge is a casual space for members to check emails, read the newspaper or watch headline news programs. A modern and comfortable seating area — the Corner Lounge is the perfect place to stay connected!

HOW TO FORM A NEW CLUB WITHIN THE CLUB 1. Contact the Membership and Marketing Department at apierce@armynavyclub.org to receive the New Club within the Club Application. 2. Draft the new Club within the Club's mission statement and purpose. 3. After receiving the one-page application, the Special Events Committee will review it and, if approved, the Membership and Marketing Department will schedule three Club within the Club Meetups. Meetups will be advertised via email and newsletter. At least 10 ANC Members will need to attend a Meetup. 4. After three successful Meetups, the proposed Club within the Club will be officially established. Questions? Contact Ariana Pierce at apierce@armynavyclub.org. 12

He commanded two units in Vietnam, winning the Silver Star for action during the battles around Dong Ap Bia (Hamburger Hill) during the summer of 1969. Subsequently, he served in command and staff positions in the United States, Germany, and Korea and ended his military career as Commandant of the United States Army War College. LIBRARY TRUST FUND / UPDATE

A LETTER FROM THE LIBRARY TRUST CHAIRMAN MG JOHN D. ALTENBURG, JR.

Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org

November 11, 2018 is the centennial anniversary of Armistice Day, which will celebrate 100 years since the end of World War I. The Library Trust has been honoring this significant anniversary throughout the year with a series of programs commemorating the Great War. We have three special World War I events remaining this year that you won’t want to miss. First, our exhibition "100 Years in the Making: A First Look at the National World War I Memorial" continues on view in the John Paul Jones/Iwo Jima Room through November. For this exhibit, which opened July 19, the Library Trust and Special Events Committees partnered with the WWI Centennial Commission to offer a first look at the upcoming memorial, which will soon break ground near the National Mall.

Then on the evening of Monday, October 15, the renowned American sculptor Sabin Howard will join us to discuss his work on the National World War I Memorial, as well as working with classical artistic methods in the 21st century. He will discuss his philosophy and artistic methods as a sculptor and provide further detail about his work on "A Soldier’s Journey," the centerpiece of the planned World War I Memorial at Pershing Park. Please RSVP to Elizabeth Newcomer at ENewcomer@ArmyNavyClub.org. Our third WWI event of the year will be a presentation by the dynamic Rob Dalessandro, Executive Director of the American Battle Monuments Commission. On Wednesday evening, November 7, Dalessandro will discuss how the nation’s Armed Forces grew from 30,000 military personnel to more than 4 million during WWI, how the Army and the Navy departments shaped the force, from whence all those men and women came, and how the U.S. military employed them. Dalessandro was the first director of the Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, then became the Head of the Army Museum System. Prior to his current appointment, he was Director of the Army Center for Military History. It’s a natural segue from these WWI events to an update regarding the increasing interest — and not just Club members — in our public collections website. Recently we assisted the World War I Centennial Commission by responding to their request for a high quality digital photograph of our Major General James Guthrie Harbord portrait. The Harbord portrait is one of our most important works, commissioned for the Club by Marine Corps officer members 14

who served under General Harbord's command at Belleau Wood and ChateauThierry during WWI. The artist selected by the Marine officers to create the Harbord portrait in the early 1920s was Richard Sumner Meryman (1881-1963), who studied with the renowned American painter and naturalist Abbott Handerson Thayer. Known as the "Father of Camouflage," Thayer was the subject of the Library Trust’s first ever fine art exhibition in 2014: "The Origins of Camouflage: The Extraordinary Life and Work of Abbott Handerson Thayer." Many of Thayer’s works are in the collections of Smithsonian museums, including the Freer|Sackler Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. The Freer Gallery and the Library Trust Committee co-sponsored the exhibit opening, which included a panel of five experts who discussed Thayer’s influence on the development of military camouflage. One of the panelists that evening was Richard Sumner Meryman, Jr. (1926-2015), son of the same Richard

Meryman commissioned in 1922 by the Marine members for the Harbord portrait. You can read more about the Club’s 2014 Thayer exhibit on our website. Through stories like this, we are pleased to share with Club members that The Library Trust collections website is drawing greater interest not only from members, but also from major military institutions and art collections. Please consider making regular, taxdeductible donations to the Library Trust through your monthly Club dues. As we expand our activities, the need for financial support grows with it. We currently have two significant naming opportunities for generous sponsors who can support our quest to establish an endowment sufficient to support the Library Trust in perpetuity. Thanks again for your continuing support. The projects of the Library Trust are consistent with our mission and obligations as a 501(c) (3) taxexempt entity. Your regular monthly and quarterly donations that accompany dues and associated payments enable us to continue to improve the collection and plan similar upgrades to our book collection. Please consider donating to The Army and Navy Club Library Trust to help us to do even more. We do need your support. Thanks.

n 1965-66, a young USAF Sergeant, noted for his moxie and unorthodox style, opened his daily morning broadcast on Armed Forces Radio, Saigon, booming out "Good Morning Vietnam!" His legion of American military listeners, from the Delta to the DMZ (a demilitarized zone), tuned into his "Dawn Buster" broadcast for the music, but most of all, for the vibe. Adrian Cronauer, to avoid a pending draft notice, joined the Air Force in 1962, while he was a full-time student in broadcasting at American University in Washington, DC. The Air Force sent him to Broadcasting School, then to Greece and then to Saigon, where he made his mark. When his enlistment was up, he returned to the States, where he worked in broadcasting, getting a degree from the University of Pittsburgh and moving from Ohio, to Virginia, and then New York City. In

Club Member Adrian Cronauer (left) and Robin Williams (right)

1979, with a friend he had served with in Vietnam, he authored a screenplay based very "loosely" on his Vietnam experience and a "great amount of his imagination." He sold the screenplay to Hollywood in 1982 and the film "Good Morning Vietnam" was released in 1987. The movie was a significant success and it was one of Robin Williams’ best performances. Cronauer always emphasized that much of the film was fiction. "If I had done the stuff that Robin Williams did in the movie, I’d still be in Leavenworth." The monetary rewards were good for Cronauer and he used the proceeds to further his career. He received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as the Special Projects Editor of the Law Review. Upon passing the DC Bar, he opened a law practice in Washington, focused on information

and communications law. He was a favorite among major veterans’ groups and his activities in support of serving military and veterans made him a national figure. His comments were often seen in the Op-Ed pages of major newspapers. He was a member of Mensa and an enthusiastic Republican, "...having taken an active role in Bob Dole’s 1996 campaign and George W. Bush’s successful 2004 campaign." He joined The Army and Navy Club in 1998 and he and his wife Jeane were frequent patrons of our dining rooms. In 2014, Cronauer suffered business reversals, closed down his law firm and retired to West Virginia. His wife died in 2016 and he passed on July 18, 2018 at the age of 79. He will be missed, yet our television movie channels will ensure "Good Morning Vietnam" lives on. ◄
