CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON TEA
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22
A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT MG Daniel V. Wright, USA (Ret.)
dwright@armynavyclub.org
As the season of Thanksgiving approaches, there is no shortage of reasons to be thankful at The Army and Navy Club. 2018 has been a year filled with lots of activity and new events like the rooftop happy hour and afternoon tea, and it just keeps getting better. In addition to annual favorites like our Salute to the Armed Forces Gala on November 3 and the Thanksgiving buffet on November 22, the staff already has a holiday tea on the books for December 22 and has also organized a new program, Dinner and a Show, where members can enjoy a prix fixe dinner at the Club before heading to the Kennedy Center. The Club will be purchasing a limited number of group tickets for select shows this season. The first performance on Friday, December 7, is sure to be a crowd pleaser as it is the holiday classic, the Nutcracker. Then on December 16 is Brunch with Santa. As always, the Marines Corps Toys for Tots program will be onsite to collect new, unwrapped gifts for children in need. Every year ANC members go above and beyond, showing their generosity and brightening Christmas for kids who truly need it. Toys for Tots accepts gifts for children ranging from toddler to 17 years of age, and makes a special plea for toys for older kids as they often get overlooked. To continue with the theme of giving, please consider contributing to the Employee Holiday Fund. This is your opportunity to show the staff how much their service means to you. Every employee benefits from the generous contributions that are collected throughout the year from our members. You can fill out the enclosed envelope or you can contact Tracy Brown at tbrown@armynavyclub.org or at 202-534-3194. Your thoughtfulness is most appreciated. I also want to remind all resident members to keep a look out for your New Year's Day tickets. Every member’s ticket is good for them and a guest, and should be in your mailboxes towards the end of November. Any non-resident members who are planning to attend the January 1 Open House can contact the Membership Department at 202355-0520 to request their complimentary ticket. Guest tickets will also be available for purchase.

A LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER & COO John L. Warnack, CCM, CFBE
jwarnack@armynavyclub.org
REFLECTIONS — ANC MISSION — SERVING THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED, EVERYDAY The United States has a long history of military conflict. The challenge is properly honoring and assisting with the transition of our brave Officers from military service to the private sector and civilian life. As a team mission, we try every day to serve, honor and respect our members, their families and guests – not just on Veteran's Day. When one of our families returns to the ANC from Arlington Cemetery, we listen to their story and do something nice for them. If one of our Gold Star Families is visiting, we take the time to sit with them and learn more about their daughter or son they lost. These moments that we are privileged to share are truly a blessing for our team as well. Speaking of blessings, one of our newest members, former Senator Bob Dole, United States Army combat hero, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and his wife former Senator Elizabeth Dole have quickly become "regulars" at our popular ANC Sunday Champagne Brunch. Mrs. Dole bought her husband a membership for his 95th birthday. Most Saturdays you will find Senator Dole in the shade just outside the main entrance to the National World War II Memorial, tirelessly welcoming and thanking his fellow veterans for their service and sacrifice for up to six hours. Needless to say, by the time they arrive here on Sunday, he is pretty hungry for the special French toast and pancakes we make for him. Please come back and see us soon – and let us serve you. Thanks again for your continued service! (Former Senator Bob Dole, left; and John Warnack, right)

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT WHITNEY GRESPIN
While in London, she took full advantage of the hospitality of many of our reciprocal clubs. Among those she enjoyed were four of the nine reciprocal arrangements we have in London. She enthusiastically endorses the In & Out, Royal Air Force, Cavalry and Guards, and East India Club, all of which were geographically suitable for her location and schedule. She has also enjoyed visiting the reciprocal club Cercle National des Armées in Paris and looks forward to visiting more clubs further afield after finishing her degree.
A WOMAN WHO DELIGHTS IN HER MEMBERSHIP
ur Spotlight article for this month focuses on a Whitney Grespin, a young woman member who recently returned to the United States after three years of teaching at the United Kingdom Defence Academy's Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC). The stint was a part of her PhD program with King's College London’s Defense Studies Department, where her dissertation examines aspects of government contracting.
Ms. Grespin is an active member of our Fox Conner Society, an ANC Club within the Club (CWC). She finds the dinner that follows the monthly seminars a fine way to speak and interact with other Fox Conner members on national security and civilian-military matters. She has also enjoyed a number of Book Forums at the Club, as well as the New Year's Eve Gala to ring in 2016. She stays at the Club when traveling to Washington, DC, and enjoys hosting fly-in family events with her siblings and parents, who share her enjoyment of staying in the heart of the city. As a new Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations, she looks forward to staying at the Club more frequently.
Whitney, an Associate Club member since 2014, was awarded a "Studentship"; which includes tuition, a stipend and a teaching contract; to work as a graduate level teaching assistant at the JSCSC on the Intermediate and Advanced courses for Land Warfare, as well as Intermediate Officer Development courses for the Royal Air Force. Now back in Pennsylvania, she is a Peace Operations Analyst at the Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute of the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA and continues to support the UK's Centre for Military Ethics as a Researcher.
Whitney has an undergraduate degree from Duquesne University (2006), a Master's degree in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh (2009), and a post-baccalaureate secondary teaching certification for Social Studies from Penn State (2014). She is a prolific author and has overseen development, education, and security sector capacity building programs on five continents. She is an advocate of women in the national security arena and is one busy woman with a purpose, who delights in the benefits of her membership. ◄

Tuesday, November 27, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person
This lunch series will feature author Paul Scharre discussing his book Army of None: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War. Paul Scharre is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. From 2008-2013, Mr. Scharre worked in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) where he played a leading role in establishing policies on unmanned and autonomous systems and emerging weapons technologies.
Russell Shorto’s work has been praised as “first-rate intellectual history” (Wall Street Journal), “literary alchemy” (Chicago Tribune) and simply “astonishing” (New York Times). In his epic new book, Russell Shorto takes us back to the founding of the American nation, drawing on diaries, letters and autobiographies to flesh out six lives that cast the era in a fresh new light. They include an African man who freed himself and his family from slavery, a rebellious young woman who abandoned her abusive husband to chart her own course and a certain Mr. Washington, who was admired for his social graces but harshly criticized for his often-disastrous military strategy.
BOOK FORUM
A powerful narrative and a brilliant defense of American values, Revolution Song makes the compelling case that the American Revolution is still being fought today and that its ideals are worth defending.
BOOK FORUM: "Directorate S: The Rise of America’s Special Operations Forces" by Steve Coll Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person
BOOK FORUM BOOK FORUM: "MacArthur's Spies: The Soldier, the Singer, and the Spymaster Who Defied the Japanese in World War II" by Peter Eisner
Prior to 9/11, the United States had been carrying out small-scale covert operations in Afghanistan, ostensibly in cooperation, although often in direct opposition, with I.S.I., the Pakistani intelligence agency. While the U.S. was trying to quell extremists, a highly secretive and compartmentalized wing of I.S.I., known as “Directorate S,” was covertly training, arming, and seeking to legitimize the Taliban, in order to enlarge Pakistan’s sphere of influence. Coll excavates this grand battle, which took place away from the gaze of the American public. With unsurpassed expertise, original research, and attention to detail, he brings to life a narrative at once vast and intricate, local and global, propulsive and painstaking. This is the definitive explanation of how America came to be so badly ensnared in an elaborate, factional, and seemingly interminable conflict in South Asia. Nothing less than a forensic examination of the personal and political forces that shape world history, Directorate S is a complete masterpiece of both investigative and narrative journalism.
Tuesday, December 11, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person A thrilling story of espionage, daring and deception set in the exotic landscape of occupied Manila during World War II. On January 2, 1942, Japanese troops marched into Manila unopposed by U.S. forces. Manila was a strategic port, a romantic American outpost and a jewel of a city. Tokyo saw its conquest of the Philippines as the key in its plan to control all of Asia, including Australia. Thousands of soldiers surrendered and were sent on the notorious eighty-mile Bataan Death March. But thousands of other Filipinos and Americans refused to surrender and hid in the Luzon hills above Bataan and Manila. MacArthur's Spies is the story of three of them, and how they successfully foiled the Japanese for more than two years, sabotaging Japanese efforts and preparing the way for MacArthur’s return. Readers of Alan Furst and Ben Macintyre — and anyone who loves Casablanca — will relish this true tale of heroism when it counted the most.

H I S T O R Y VA U LT
BY COL JAMES A. BR ACKEN, USMC (RET.), CLUB VICE PRESIDENT & HISTORIAN
A FOOTNOTE OF CONFECTIONARY HISTORY Ronald Reagan's first Inauguration in January 1981 motivated the Massachusetts Republican Delegation to commission an Inaugural cake so over the top that it would be unmatched for years to come. Their cake was to be served at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the location of one of the 10 Inaugural Balls to be held on 21 January. The contract was awarded to a Quincy, Massachusetts baker, renowned in New England for turning out cakes of note during the Kennedy presidency. Commissioned to design "the cake to be remembered," Montilio's Bakery did just that. The masterpiece was to be seven feet high, with five tiers and it would measure 24 feet around its base. The amount of ingredients needed was daunting: 720 pounds of flour, 880 pounds of sugar, 85 gallons of milk, 48 pounds of shortening, and the gift of George Montilio's cake design genius to put it all together. As Inauguration Day approached, Montilio, the architect of this colossus, had multiple ten pound sheet cakes baked in Massachusetts and then trucked to the Kennedy Center in a refrigerated trailer. Alas, on arrival Montilio confronted a problem: the sheets were much too soft to carry into the Kennedy Center for final assembly and as his crew dithered over a solution they missed their time slot to unload at the Kennedy Center. The only solution left was to find, quickly, another venue to assemble and decorate the monstrous cake. Montilio took advantage of his connections with the very tight bakers' fraternity and after a few frantic calls seeking an assembly location, he found the ideal facility... the kitchen in our very own Army and Navy Club. And assemble this beauty in our kitchen they did. Expert cake decorators then applied the trimmings. "There were golden eagles soaring up around one tier and icing flags flying bravely around another. Profiles of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and seals of state added a sense of occasion. Red sugar roses graced the corners and a scale model of the Capitol Dome crowned the chef-d'oeuvre." "Beaming Republicans from Massachusetts gathered (at the Club) to bid adieu to this great gateau, now weighing 3,742 pounds, before its odyssey to the Kennedy center for the Ball." But tragically, and to the great disappointment of all involved, ".... it could not be budged." The opportunity was lost, and the beautiful, but too large, cake never left the Club. "The day after the Ball, more than 100 cooks, cleaners, and waiters at The Army and Navy Club crept out under the cover of darkness, carrying large and authorized plastic bags stuffed with huge slabs of cake. More cubic footage was stuffed into the Club's freezer, to emerge later as parts of various desserts. For months, all over the city, one might discover icing stars and pieces of George Bush's edible nose floating in flans, sundaes, charlottes, cobblers, pandowdies and trifles." This tale of the inaugural cake disaster was kept quiet until a Washington Post gossip columnist, Diana McLellan, spilled the beans in her column, "Ear on Washington." The descriptive quotes describing the cake came from her pen. As to Mr. Montilio, he shrugged off the loss and his bakery has continued to provide memorable cakes for every Inauguration since... that is up until Mr. Trump came to town. The Trumpers "‌went in another direction." ◄ November 2018

UPDATE
Our third and final World War I event of the year will be Wednesday evening, November 7—SOON—so make your reservation to join us!! Our own Library Trust member, Rob Dalessandro, Executive Director of the American Battle Monuments Commission, will inform and delight with his superb presentation on the transformation of the United States Armed Forces during World War I. U.S. Forces expanded from 30,000 military personnel to more than 4 million. Rob will discuss the subsequent events shaped by the entry of American forces into France in 1917. He has served as Director of the f r om t he L ibr a r y Army Heritage and Education Center, Director of the Army Museum System, and Director of the Army Center for Military History.
thoughts, opinions, questions, musings, compliments, and suggestions. Please email all messages to John Altenburg at the following email: altenburgj@gtlaw.com. Our most recent event was October 15, when sculptor Sabin Howard discussed his work on the National World War I Memorial—an encore presentation of his remarks during last July's opening reception for "100 Years in the Making." Once again, Howard proved a Tr u st C ha i r ma n huge hit with all in attendance, as he elaborated with great depth and humor about his sculptural process and the unique challenges of designing a national memorial. Howard is the award-winning sculptor of "A Soldier's Journey," the centerpiece of the planned World War I Memorial at Pershing Park (photo below).
A LETTER
Our exhibition, "100 Years in the Making: A First Look at the National World War I Memorial," continues in the Iwo Jima/John Paul Jones Room through November. Reviews and comments have been extraordinarily positive: Edwin Fountain, Vice Chair of the WWI Centennial Commission, was "gobsmacked." The Library Trust partnered with the Centennial Commission to provide this first look at the forthcoming memorial, which will soon break ground near the National Mall. The presentation and exhibition conclude the Library Trust's yearlong event series marking the centennial anniversary of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. The Library Trust is already planning its 2019 art season, and we would love to hear from you! If you have any thoughts on our programming from this past year, or suggestions for events and exhibitions you would like to see in the future, please reach out and share your ideas,

We have also given the "digital treatment" to our full collection of 93 Time Magazine covers featuring Club members. Both these collections are available on our website, which now includes a "special collections" page designed specifically for similar collections. We will add more special collections over the next

year, offering unprecedented access to our historic artworks and archives. Our website continues to attract interest from museums and artists across the country. Most recently, the Dixon Gallery in Memphis, Tennessee requested our current research and photography of the William McGregor Paxton murals in the Main Dining Room for an upcoming retrospective exhibition of Paxton and his wife, the painter Elizabeth Okie Paxton. Our Club's Paxton murals are unequalled among the artist's lifework for their size and theme. Our most recent acquisition puts the U.S. Air Force front and center. The portrait of General Russell E. Dougherty (photo below), former Commander of the Strategic Air Command, was generously donated by his children, Dede and Mark. Dede is the wife of retired General Joseph Ralston; Mark is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel. The Library Trust commissioned Gold Leaf Studios to create the custom frame, which incorporates into its design an original shell casing from the volley fired at General Dougherty's Arlington Cemetery burial. The portrait was unveiled by Generals Norton Schwartz and John Shaud (both Club members) on September 7. The portrait is now on permanent view just left of the ballroom entrance. You can also view a high-resolution digital image of the portrait and read more about General Dougherty on our website, Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org. Click on "Explore the Collection," and enter a keyword search for "Dougherty." Please consider making regular, tax-deductible donations to the 501(c) (3) Library Trust through your monthly Club dues. As we expand our activities, the need for financial support grows with it. The Library Trust supplemented the generous $50,000 anonymous donation for the renovation of the Gannon Room in the Club Library by adding $10,000 to ensure its completion and furnishing, including the historic bullseye mirror acquisition and the custom framing of Major Gannon's military awards and certificates. The Library Trust also funded the Prints and Drawings exhibition in the Eagle Grill and the World War I exhibition in the amount of more than $15,000. We have two significant naming opportunities for generous sponsors who can support our mission to establish an endowment sufficient to support the Library Trust in perpetuity. â—„
