Every December it seems as if you just blink and the holidays are back in full swing. This is always a dynamic time of year at the Club in terms of events, but this year more so than others. The catering and banquets team has been busy with members’ holiday parties and the membership and special events staff have put together a number of new holidays events for all members to enjoy in addition to our annual favorites.

UPCOMING EVENTS Dining Events and more

10

Friday, December 7, will be the first dinner and a show, where members who have reserved tickets through the Membership office ahead of time will meet at the Club for a prix fixe dinner and then head out to the Kennedy Center for the holiday classic the Nutcracker. While this particular event is sold out, there will be more to come in 2019, so be on the lookout!

Then, on Saturday, December 8, if you weren’t able to get your tickets to the big game in Philly, the Club will host its annual Army Navy Game party in the Eagle Grill. Whether you’re rooting for the Black Knights or the Midshipman, this is always a great afternoon of camaraderie with a healthy dose of rivalry.

ON THE COVER

And while the Christmas Tea on the 22nd sold out quickly (even with 2 extra seatings!), there are still reservations for Brunch with Santa on Sunday, December 16. Kids can give their wish lists to Santa and have their pictures taken. The Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots will also be on site to collect new and unwrapped toys for children in need, which our members have always been so generous with, so a big thank you in advance for your kindness. I also want to get in one more reminder to donate to the Employee Holiday Fund if you haven’t yet done so. The Fund is your opportunity to show the staff how much their service means to you. All ANC employees benefit from the generous contributions that are collected throughout the year from our members, which they are most appreciative of! If you would like to contribute to the fund you can contact Tracy Brown at tbrown@armynavyclub.org or at 202-534-3194. And let us not forget about the biggest event of the year, the New Year’s Day Open House! If you haven't received your complimentary member ticket for you and a guest, or would like to purchase additional guest tickets, please contact the Membership office at 202-355-0520. I look forward to sharing the first day of the New Year with you all! We will have a lot to celebrate as 2019 is promising to be another great year.

A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SECURITY COMMITTEE Col Jack C. James, USMC (Ret.)

The time honored "First General Order" for sentries has classically been to "take charge of this post and all government property in view." While seeming simple, this in fact is what we could today call the commander's intent or mission order. That said, the physical and cyber threat environment has expanded dramatically in recent years. So to it is with us today in providing Club security in an urban environment near the White House and within infinite reach via cyber of members worldwide.

forums and luncheons and Fox Conner Society speakers. A recent initiative under way is to establish a Cyber "Club within the Club."

This was the challenge taken on by the ANC Security Committee, established by the Club President as a formal committee with mission orders to "take charge" of club security. A tall order requiring a team of the best minds and experiences from our Club membership, augmented by Club senior management, inhouse IT experts, external contractors, and networking daily with threat assessments provided directly to our team by Metropolitan Police Department, Homeland Security, U.S. Secret Service, FBI and others. All bring to the table extensive best practices for our application.

Access control embraces employee training, employment of professionally trained security professionals and collaboration with law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Technology and special equipment are employed.

Our goals are to provide Club members, guests, employees and the clubhouse a secure physical and cyber environment, and rapid response capability to natural disasters and human interventions. Our Security Committee's focus is on training, physical security, access control, and facility hardening backed by adequate financial resources and strategic planning. Training for the Club's staff has embraced threat identification and response, emergency medical treatment, fire prevention and response, and cyber protection. Educational awareness extended to members has been through Special Events Committee book

Physical security initiatives have focused on ways to better protect the clubhouse from penetration and minimize effects of potential intrusions. Most of these initiatives are transparent and may include cameras, locks, communications capacities and similar measures.

Cybersecurity, in the complex, ever-changing technology world is a major challenge to protect members and guests' Personally Identifiable Information (PII), financial and other data transacted by hotel, membership, catering and internal accounting centers. We have a very engaged IT contractor supporting ANC 24/7 and contract with outside specialists to annually conduct cybersecurity audits, reviews and penetration testing. The Club President, Board of Governors, House and Membership committees, GM and staff are "all-in" with your Security Committee to protect our clubhouse, members, and guests. Members and guests can play an important role by personally safeguarding their PII, being vigilant to "see something; say something" when visiting the Club and participating in various security related educational initiatives. Finally, your contribution of ideas and initiatives are always welcome.

LIEUTENANT COLONELS JACKIE AND DAVE ESCOBAR NEWLY JOINED, ENTHUSIASTIC CLUB MEMBERS

T

he Escobar’s, both West Point graduates (Jackie in 2002, Dave in 2001), were separately introduced to our Army and Navy Club. Jackie was attending a West Point Women’s happy hour at the Club and Dave was invited to meet a friend at the Daiquiri Lounge. Both were impressed, so they joined last spring. They quickly became involved with the Fox Conner Society, our first "Club within the Club," and found a fine way to gain an understanding of our Club culture and meet other members. They are resident members, each currently working at the Pentagon and living one Metro stop away from Farragut Square. Both anticipate transfers to command positions at separate Army facilities in Georgia next summer. The couple thrives on change. Married 15 years, they have been on the move ever since. Dave, an armor officer, has completed three combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, an operational tour to East Asia, and a 12-month deployment to Korea as a Foreign Liaison to the Korean Army. Jackie, a logistician, has also served three combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and a one-year tour in Korea. Both have advanced degrees (hers in International Security Policy and his in Literature) and have taught at West Point.

The Army, as you may well have noted, appears to make a major effort to ensure the Escobar’s have the opportunity to be stationed together or in proximity. This enlightened, pro-family approach, was not always the way in any of our military services in the past. Jackie, from Louisville, Kentucky, has always been proud of her Grandfather’s service with General George S. Patton in Europe in World War II. His service motivated her to join JROTC in high school and she set her sights on becoming a West Point cadet. Dave, from Coral Springs, Florida, was mentored by an Army recruiter, who encouraged him to strive for West Point. His entry was through the USMA Prep School. We welcome the Escobar’s to our Club and we look forward to that day, 50 years from now, when they are eligible to become Knights of the Golden Circle. ◄

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE Sarah M. Ford

sford@armynavyclub.org

Some exciting news from the ANC Accounting Office I know what you must be thinking. The words "accounting" and "exciting" don’t belong in the same sentence. But it’s true! We are upgrading our systems in order to make paying your Club statement more convenient and more secure. Starting January 2019, you will be able to view your statement and make payments online using a bank account or a credit card. Our easiest and most convenient way to pay is also improving! The auto-pay feature will now include the option to use a bank account. In order to complete the upgrade, we will need to gather some information from you, our esteemed members. If you are currently enrolled in auto-pay, we will need to add your credit card information into the new system, as we are unable to transfer encrypted information from the old system. If you are not currently using our auto-pay feature, we encourage you to sign-up at this time. Please look for a new and improved recurring payment authorization form in the mail with your next statement. We are requesting all participants fill out the form and return to the Accounting office no later than December 31, 2018. If you have any questions or concerns, we invite you to call the Accounting office and speak with Tracy Brown our Accounts Receivable Coordinator at 202-534-3194. "MacArthur's Spies: The Soldier, the Singer, and the Spymaster Who Defied the Japanese in World War II" By Peter Eisner

with Sarah Verardo Saturday, January 19, 2019 Registration/Lunch 12 pm Presentation 12:30 pm Price $24++ per person

Tuesday, December 11, 2018 Reception 6:30 pm Speaker 7 pm Price $10 per person A thrilling story of espionage, daring and deception set in the exotic landscape of occupied Manila during World War II. On January 2, 1942, Japanese troops marched into Manila unopposed by U.S. forces. Manila was a strategic port, a romantic American outpost and a jewel of a city. Tokyo saw its conquest of the Philippines as the key in its plan to control all of Asia, including Australia. Thousands of soldiers surrendered and were sent on the notorious eighty-mile Bataan Death March. But thousands of other Filipinos and Americans refused to surrender and hid in the Luzon hills above Bataan and Manila. MacArthur's Spies is the story of three of them, and how they successfully foiled the Japanese for more than two years, sabotaging Japanese efforts and preparing the way for MacArthur’s return.

Hero at Home was inspired by Sarah Verardo's personal family journey: having three young daughters and a catastrophically wounded Veteran husband. The book honors the ones who came home, and embraces the loving memory of the ones who did not. An important read for those wishing to embrace the Wounded Heroes in their community and better understand that for these Heroes, the fight doesn't end when they return home. The mission continues and is a family affair. Injuries from military service can be both visible and invisible. Hero at Home celebrates the contribution that our Veterans have made, and shines a light on how vital it is to embrace these special families. Please note that this event is family-oriented and members are encouraged to bring their children. The author will perform a special reading for the children.

H I S T O R Y VA U LT

BY COL JAMES A. BR ACKEN, USMC (RET.), CLUB VICE PRESIDENT & HISTORIAN

Major General John Lincoln Clem, USA T he Dr ummer Boy of Chickamauga Lincoln Clem, a John colorful, beloved member of

our club for 46 years (he joined in 1891, 6 years after our Club was formed), ran away from his home in Newark, Ohio to join the Army at the start of the Civil War. He was 10 years old. Initially rejected by the 22nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment, he traveled along with them anyway, and made himself useful. Eventually they enlisted him as an 11-year-old Drummer Boy. During the Civil War young boys were able to join the Union Army by enlisting in non-combat positions. In the Union Army "…there were 40,000 such billets for musicians, drummers, flautists and buglers." Clem came to substantial fame, within the Army and throughout the Country, after the battle of Chickamauga. In the course of a Union retreat, a Confederate colonel demanded Clem’s surrender. The colonel shouted, "Stop running you little Yankee devil." Clem, wielding a musket trimmed to fit him, shot and seriously wounded the colonel. After the battle, Drummer Boy Clem was promoted to sergeant, the youngest soldier ever to become a noncommissioned soldier in the U.S. Army.

After being wounded twice, Clem was discharged in 1864. His small size, very young age, and his persistence to serve as a Union soldier created a legend around him and he was a media darling (sometimes celebrated more by fiction than fact) for many years. After Clem’s belated graduation from high school in 1870, he tried, unsuccessfully, to secure an appointment to West Point. Never at a loss for luck or ambition, he was delighted when President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him a second lieutenant in the regular Army. In time he became a colonel of quartermaster and served on active duty until 1915. When he reached mandatory retirement age that year, he was given a "tombstone" promotion to brigadier general, as was customary for Civil War veterans. The last soldier of the Civil War still serving when he retired, Clem was honored by the Congress of the United States with an additional promotion to major general one year later. After retiring, he lived in Washington, DC for many years and near the end of his life moved to Houston, Texas. While in Washington, General Clem was a regular at the Club and at the bridge table. He had a reputation as a warm and inviting man, and he was, as one would expect, a very popular member. ◄

The Confederate newspapers used Clem’s age and celebrity to show "what sore straits the Yankees are driven to when they have to send their babies into battle." December 2018

UPDATE

W

e thank you, our donors! For the Library Trust's final 2018 Dispatch column, we thank all our donors, members, and friends who have helped make this one of the most exciting, eventful, and accomplished years in the Library Trust's history. Thanks to your support, we have hosted more and better events and exhibitions, achieved longstanding production goals like building a website and partnering with outside art museums and military institutions, and built our Club community in ways that were not possible previously. You have enabled the Library Trust to plan well into the future, so that we may build upon our accomplishments and provide you with ever better events and shows in the years to come. Without your donations and engagement, this would not be possible. Thank you again, and again, and again.

A LETTER f r om t he L ibr a r y Tr u st C ha i r ma n

The Library Trust is planning its 2019 art season and we would love to hear from you! If you have thoughts on our programming from this past year, or suggestions for events and exhibitions you would like to see in the future, please reach out and share your ideas, thoughts, opinions, questions, musings, compliments, and suggestions. Please email all messages to: AltenburgJ@GTLaw.com. For those unable to attend, we share our memories of Rob Dalessandro's superb 7 November presentation about the transformation of the United States Armed Forces during World War I. This marvelous discussion marked our third and final WWI event of the year, in honor of the centennial anniversary of Armistice Day. Rob, as always, enlightened and delighted the audience, sharing fascinating anecdotes and unique information about life in the US in and around the Great War. Thank you, Rob, not only for providing compelling presentations, but also for serving as a stalwart member of the Library Trust Committee and as an invaluable advisor for both our book collection and our art collection. Our Collections website, Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org, grows monthly. In addition to all the Club's major works, two additional archives are now available for members and the public to explore on our online collection. The Roy Boehm Archive chronicles more than half a century of the military career and later civilian life of Lieutenant Commander Roy H. Boehm, USN (1924-2008), best known for helping to develop and then lead the special operations unit that would become the Navy SEALs. The Members in History collection comprises each of the 102 covers of Time Magazine featuring a member of The Army and Navy Club since the magazine was founded in 1923. Our first cover is the July 9, 1923 portrait of General Mason M. Patrick, for whom Patrick Air Force Base in Florida is named. We will add more special collections during 2019. We also plan to add a special donor page that will recognize the many supporters of the Library Trust.

LIBRARY TRUST FUND

Our website continues to attract interest from museums and artists across the country. Most recently, the World War I Centennial Commission asked for permission to use our high-resolution digital photograph of the General Harbord portrait (in the Club's Ballroom) for use in one of the Commission's publications. The portrait was donated in 1923 by Marine Corps Officers who served in Harbord's command in 1918. Furthermore, the Dixon Gallery in Memphis, Tennessee requested our current photography and research of the William McGregor Paxton murals in the Club's Main Dining Room for an upcoming retrospective exhibition of Paxton and his wife, the painter Elizabeth Okie Paxton. These projects further reinforce the value of the Library Trust's digitization project and online collection, which enables us to become part of a larger community of museums, military institutions, libraries, and art collections around the country. Please consider making regular, tax-deductible donations to the 501(c) (3) Library Trust through your monthly Club dues. Or perhaps you're interested in giving a significant "holiday present" to the Library Trust. ☺ We welcome donations in all forms. As we expand our activities, the need for financial support grows with it. The new "Special Collections" on the website doubled the space required and the monthly maintenance cost for the website. Updating object labels and the planning and execution of exhibits costs the Library Trust. We want as many members and guests as possible to see what the Library Trust is doing for the Club; to that end, the World War I exhibit will continue in the Iwo Jima/John Paul Jones Room through the holidays and the New Year's Day reception. For those who cater an event in those rooms, the exhibit provides a special attraction for you and your guests. Our special arts and prints exhibit, culled from pieces throughout the entire Club will continue as a special exhibit in the Eagle Grill—also through the holidays and New Year's Day reception. Be sure to visit these special exhibits when you're at the Club—especially if you're there for the Thanksgiving Day Buffet, Christmas Day Buffet, or the New Year's Day reception. We continue to seek donors for two significant naming opportunities for sponsors who want to help the Library Trust attain an endowment corpus sufficient to support the Library Trust in perpetuity. ◄
