Plan parked Turtle Pond supporters quash park idea DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

RAD GRADS High school graduates were celebrated at Arnprior District High School last week. See our double-page spread, and check out next week’s paper for Grade 8 graduations from area elemen34-35 tary schools.

It turns out there won’t be another Macnamara Trail-like park in Arnprior after all. The group behind the idea has pulled out. Mayor David Reid found out Tuesday that Supporters of Turtle Pond, a group volunteering to gentrify lands between Madawaska Boulevard and Decosta Street, has rescinded its offer. It gave no formal reason for the move, but individual members said the town’s treatment of a beaver dam and its use of a grown-over roadway across from Sandvik on Decosta Street played a role. Town employees dismantle part of a beaver dam weekly from early June to early July going back almost 40 years to prevent the road from flooding. The road is used for the town’s main water trunk line, carrying water from the filtration plant to fill the water tower. To allow a flood would be dangerous, reads a letter from town director of public works and engineering Janet Collins. See ‘BEAVER DAM’ Page 2

DOUBLE THE CANADA DAY FUN Eight-month-old Braeside twins Codey and Alex Burnette rest up before the village’s annual Canada Day parade Friday morning. There were plenty of July 1 activities to keep McNab-Braeside and Arnprior residents and visitors alike entertained. See Pages 5, 8, 16, 17 and 19 for more Canada Day coverage. It was a relaxing start to Canada Day for Lorne Pirie. Drinking coffee in the backyard, admiring the garden, watching the sun rise with the promise of warm weather ahead. Best

of all, his grown daughter was home for a visit. All things were in their proper place at the Herrick Drive home, just outside Arnprior town limits. A country boy at heart, Pirie finally moved out of the city after a long 10 years. And now, with his trusty dog Murphy at his side, Pirie was taking time to survey all

within his domain. Then it showed itself. A coyote in the backyard, sniffing the air, eyes half closed. It spotted Pirie, and he it. Eyes locked but, strangely, the intruder didn’t exactly back down. Wildlife maintains a stubborn disrespect for private property. See ‘POLICE ISSUE’ Page 2
