Roundabout? Roads to be transferred, Campbell lobbies for traffic roundabout off Division Street STEVE NEWMAN Steve.newman@metroland.com

With housing expansion in Arnprior impacting roads in and around the town, McNab-Braeside and Arnprior are pushing for improvements to Division Street and Baskin Drive. One of the suggestions, made by McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell, is to turn the intersection of the two streets into a roundabout. At its Sept. 28 session, Renfrew County council approved, in principle, both the transfer of Baskin Drive (Division to Daniel street) from Arnprior to the county and the transfer of a section of Division Street (from Highway 417 to Baskin Drive) to the Township of McNab-Braeside. The short western segment of Division Street no longer qualifies as a county road with its loss of direct access to the newly four-laned Highway 417. See ‘HIGHWAY’ Page 2

McNab-Braeside Township is not going to go along with Arnprior’s proposal that a committee be struck to help the municipalities sign new user agreements for library and recreation services. The township recently extended the agreements until Jan. 1, 2012. Arnprior has asked McNabBraeside to select one councillor and two members of the public to sit on a committee charged with

negotiating the new agreements. However, township council members would rather the matter be negotiated council-to-council in an open forum. Mayor Mary Campbell explained that while Renfrew, with which the township also has user agreements, provides information about how many residents are using the services, the tradition has been to provide a lump sum to the Town of Arnprior. The town’s new family health team is up and running. Well, part of it is up and running – much to the relief of local physicians. The Arnprior and District Family Health Team will bring together a variety of health care providers including family physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, dietitians and other

professionals who work together to provide a wide range of health options that have not been available to the community in the past. The benefit to the community is that – rather than physicians shouldering efforts to find various specialists, a time-consuming and costly activity – patients enjoy a kind of comprehensive one-stop shopping.

Highway four-laning prompts changes for Division, Baskin Continued from front Division Street’s intersection with Highway 17 is being replaced by a ‘flyover’ passing over the newly constructed Highway 417. Therefore, Daniel Street will become the most direct connecting roadway to Highway 417 for motorists coming from the Division Street and Baskin Drive areas. Renfrew County council has also given the green light for ne-

gotiations to take place this fall between county and township staff to determine the amount of money provided to McNabBraeside to compensate its taking over a stretch of Division Street. It will cost an estimated $40,000 to bring the section to a tolerable local standard. ROUNDABOUT Meanwhile, McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell is push-

ing for a roundabout at the corner of Division Street and Baskin Drive. Both roads are in sub-par condition. Campbell said new housing construction is expected to bring another 700 or so cars into the area every day, thereby creating an even bigger traffic issue. Creating a four-way stop at the intersection of Division and Baskin would be counterproductive, maintains Campbell. Renfrew County public works

director Dave Darch said a roundabout is an option, especially since there’s ample space. However, various options need to be considered, he said. Campbell said there are already other eastern Ontario communities using roundabouts effectively, such as Ottawa, Almonte and Kemptville. “I want them (public works) to plan it now, so we avoid an issue down the road,” said Campbell. It’s expected the respective

transfers of Baskin Drive and Division Street will take place next spring, said Darch. Forthcoming negotiations will also determine who assumes maintenance requirements. Campbell reported back to council Oct. 4 regarding the issue. She provided a draft resolution that will be sent to the township’s public works committee. The resolution requests the county plan for an alternate solution to the intersection.

During last week’s session of county council, McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell makes a point about road improvements in the village of Sand Point as Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack and Laurentian Hills Mayor Dick Rabishaw listen intently.

Traffic-calming improvements backed for River Road at Sand Point STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

The County of Renfrew has approved a pilot project of traffic-calming measures for the hamlet of Sand Point. The pilot project follows several antispeeding measures already adopted over the past three years along River Road. They included such moves as reducing the speed limit in the area three kilometres north of Braeside, from 60 to 50 kilometres per hour and extra signs to warn motorists of pedestrians in the area. Now after a delegation of Sand Point residents complained about speeders to McNab-Braeside and County councils, additional steps have been approved by Renfrew County council. The approval at the Sept. 28 council meeting comes on the heels of studies that show about three-quarters of motorists travel more than 20 kph over the posted speed limits along River Road. The new approved measures include the painting of a white edge line along both sides of River Road. The county’s operations committee was informed, before approving the recommendation to council, that such lines can

make a roadway seem narrower, causing motorists to slow down. The second approved measure is the painting of a ‘50 km/h Ahead’ symbol on the roadway before entering the reduced speed zone. This represents the first time the county will have painted text on a roadway. The third approved measure is the implementation of a 50 km/hr Community Safety Zone (CSZ) within Sand Point. According to section 214 of the Highway Traffic Act, a municipality may designate part of a highway as a CSZ if, in the council’s opinion, public safety is of special concern on that section of road. In CSZs, speeding fines are customarily doubled. Effectiveness of the Community Safety Zone will be monitored for a year. McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell expressed gratitude to the operations committee and public works director David Darch and staff for pushing forward with the pilot project. “We will be able to measure the effectiveness,” said Campbell. “And I hope we will continue to look for traffic-calming solutions through our heritage hamlets.” Some of the old homes along River Road were built in the 1830s.

Sign of the times

Now that McNab-Braeside Township has determined the main requirement for signs along Highway 17 is that they are set back 10 feet from the roadway, plans are in the works in earnest to commission a township sign. Staff will gather information and prices and report back to council, said CAO Noreen Mellema Oct. 4. Mayor Mary Campbell said she’d be happy to see one similar to the one in front of the township office, only bigger. It’s likely price will determine size, said Mellema. Funds for the sign were raised at this summer’s McNab Days festival.

NURSE PRACTITIONERS Nurse Practitioners are nurses who have undertaken extensive specialized training and education and are able to: • provide advanced physical assessments; • diagnose and treat illnesses and/or injuries; • order and interpret diagnostic tests; • write prescriptions; • provide counseling and education; • provide supportive care through illness; • make referrals to family physicians, specialists and other health professionals. Nurse Practitioners provide a nursing approach to patient care, incorporating the physical, emotional, mental, and social aspects of a person’s health and illness. They play an important role with patients in family health teams. These roles can include, helping patients maintain healthy active lifestyles, assisting patients to understand illnesses and health conditions, as well as assessing/diagnosing and treating acute and chronic health conditions. Nurse Practitioners work with the full age range of people and can see patients as individuals, families, and communities to promote health and prevent disease. For more information, contact team executive director Maureen Sullivan-Bentz at info@arnpriorfht.ca.

Continued from front The health team opened Sept. 6 to respond to the need, but has yet to fully secure its space in the Arnprior District Memorial Hospital’s Primary Care Centre. It won’t have a phone number until next week. It isn’t known yet how many patients will be served on a weekly basis. But that hasn’t stopped patients from filing in to see Arnprior’s first nurse practitioner, Susan Allen. “It’s going very well and we’re really happy we have the service. It’s just a matter of trying to optimize it,” Allen said. “We’ve heard from physicians that it’s reducing their workload already.” In August 2010, the Ontario government announced 30 new Family Health Teams bringing the total number in Ontario to 200. Arnprior’s is a not-for-profit team that functions independently from the hospital, though the two organizations work together. Patients of local physicians are eligible to be referred to the health team. If your doctor is one of the following, you can be served by the family health team: doctors Boersma, Gordon, Kurian, Morrison, Robson, Rivington, Schriver, Suzuki, Trang, Ali, Becker in Arnprior; doctors Vilas and Kiskis in Pakenham. Before the team arrived, it could take months for a patient to see a dietitian, social worker or other professional recommended by their family doctor. The team is comprised of 13 local physicians; 11 practise in the Primary Care Centre and two practise in Pakenham. Many of the other nine health professionals will be added to the team by the end of November. The team will be operating out of Suite 257 and Suite 154 in the Primary Care Centre until reno-

Gary Haybecker drove away with top prize money at the second annual Brawl in the Fall demolition derby at the Arnprior fairgrounds Saturday. Haybecker, who was sponsored by Bill’s Appraisals and Cavanagh Construction, earned $3,000 as survivor of the mid-size, six-cylinder showdown. Second-place honours and $1,000 went to James Anderson, whose car was sponsored by Spa Salon in Arnprior. The third-place prize of $540 was won by John Byers, who was sponsored by Matco Tools. Prize money was based on the number of entries, and the next biggest prize pool was for the large, eight-

cylinder class. In that finale Greg Johnson, driving for Jeff ’s Fab Farm, took home $2,500 for finishing on top in the final race of the day, which showcased a strong field of experienced derby drivers. Second place went to Jeff Woito. He picked up $800 with his entry that was sponsored by Sledzz BBQ and Jim New Preowned. Third place and $480 was earned by Randy Haybecker, whose car was sidelined by a fire under the hood. The mini, four-cylinder final was a never-say-die battle as Corey Washburn of CTC/JW Car Wash was eliminated first, followed by Craig Anderson of Anderson Automotive. Anderson earned $350 for his thirdplace finish. The final two cars in the ring for that final had to be

pulled apart three times before Harry Parsons finally emerged as the winner over Andrew Normandeau. Parsons got $1,500 for gutting out the win and Normandeau picked up $600. CHEO BIG WINNER The guys behind the wheel weren’t the only winners. Another was the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, The hospital will receive $1,800. Midway through the competition, Eric the Intern from radio station Station CHEZ 106 faced the Power Puff Valley Girls in a playful cardboard box showdown. That feature alone raised $520 for CHEO. A dollar from each spectator admission fee will go to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, as

will half the money raised through an engine blowup contest and $320 from a 50/50 draw. The show, which also featured monster truck rides and an engine blow-up contest, ended about 8 p.m. Saturday. Some of the key volunteers behind the effort were Scott Rancourt, Ed Carron Jr., Randy Haybecker, Jeff Schlievert, announcer Brian Majaury, and booth workers Jo-anne Camelon and Karyn Martin. The local St. John Ambulance and Arnprior Firefighters were also integral to the day’s success. A total of 63 cars participated in the second annual show. A barbecue was also held and post-event wing special offered at the sponsor Prior Sports Bar.

IN THE BEGINNING Most people marvel at recent advancements in personal computers and phones. But many urban planners and engineers say it is modern society’s ability to purify water, our life force, that shows true technological advancement. It is the reason plagues of the Middle Ages no longer happen, something to cause even the Romans to marvel. “The technology has come a long way, especially in the last 10 years or so,” Trumble said. “There’s been huge leaps in the controls, automation, sensors and things like that.” Getting the mind around 9.7 million litres of waste water is pretty daunting. But that is the amount cleaned at the centre every day, where it comes in at about 70 litres per second; up to 500 during rain storms. But to follow one flush from the east side of the Madawaska, where it flows through one of four pump stations before carried under the river to the site, or from the west side where most

uses gravity to get to the centre, and a clearer picture emerges. Just inside the front gate, about six feet underground, that one flush enters the first brick building. That’s where it passes up one of two screens: long, rectangular tubes. Inside are rakes to catch large debris such as sticks and rags. Before the second was installed, this was an area that caused bottlenecking and a back-up in flow. Trumble said in bigger cities, centre workers find large snakes and all sorts of strange things. Snakes don’t turn up in Arnprior’s water pollution control plant. However, the water treatment worker would be NOW A SECONDARY PROCESS the first to lead the march against feminine hygiene plastic applicators. The flush is carried along the chambers by moving bars attached to nylon chains along the surface. There are four primary clarifiers: two built in the 1950s when the centre was created; another in 1996; and the most recent one this year. The originals haven’t been emptied and cleaned until recently. The centre couldn’t afford to have them out of commission. “I don’t foresee needing any more,” Trumble said. The town’s optimum population is about 10,000. It is currently at about 7,500. The clarifiers can now treat 9,700 cubic metres per day, up by 2,000 with the renovations. “That’s a heck of a lot of flushes,” Trumble concluded.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the contents of roughly 187,500 toilet flushes that occur every day in Arnprior? We at the Chronicle-Guide did, which is why waterworks supervisor Mike Trumble kindly provided an exclusive tour of the newly upgraded and expanded Water Pollution Control Centre. Located along the Madawaska River, near the marina, the centre’s almost $17.4-million renovation – split evenly among three levels of government – means occurrences such as the 2005 fine for dumping raw sewage in the Ottawa River should stay in the past. Empirical evidence shows the water leaving the centre is now cleaner than the water entering the Water Filtration Plant next to the Nick Smith Centre.

Continued from Page 6 Now we have a “secondary treatment” component. This year a second tank was added to perform biological treatment. Microscopic organisms play a crucial role at this stage in protecting the health of populations in advanced nations around the world. The organisms are mixed in with tiny oxygen-filled bubbles and a carefully monitored ratio, to consume sugars, fats, and the like. They bind much of the less soluble fractions into floc. The organisms die off eventually, but nature, of course, abhors a vacuum, and replenishes them. “That’s why we have to do tests a few times a week to make sure the balance is right,” Trumble said. Centre employees know a bit about microbiology, engineering and a few other heady fields. They do a two-year diploma specializing in water treatment, but also do about 40 hours of training through the provincial ministry of the environment every year, too. Once the trillions of organisms have chowed down on our flush it is returned to the primary treatment chambers. Then it’s off to a secondary settling tank. There are three tanks now, after two more were added in the 1996 upgrade.

R0041124976

Smelly? It’s actually not that bad

This hot chocolate-like mixture is oxygen blown into the flow, along with organisms that break down the sewage. Keeping a careful balance is key to the process. Once again the solids settle to the bottom in a tank that Trumble says looks like a vat of hot chocolate. Minus the marshmellows. Chlorine is added to the tank, then a disinfectant to neutralize the chlorine. That is where you can dip a glass in and raise it skyward to examine clear and delicious drinking water. In fact, Trumble was asked to

take a drink for the photographer. “We save that for reporters to do.” The outflow makes its way to the newly installed $2-million pipe pointed out into the Ottawa River at Robert Simpson Park beach. The leftover “biosolid” makes its way to one of the two new circular buildings or “digesters” visible from Madawaska Bridge. There it is mixed, heated and dewatered to 30 per cent of its previous state. The excess heat is recycled to the boilers and other parts of the operation. “It looks like moist topsoil at this stage,” Trumble said. Unfortunately for environmentalists, the biosolids are trucked to the landfill. It could go on farm fields, which town council may consider in the future. The good news is that only about five truck loads are taken from the centre each week. That’s half what used to happen. The methane gas formed in the digestion process will be used to heat the plant and any excess gas is flared off from a nearby stack. Mayor David Reid, like thousands of others, toured the centre when he was a schoolboy. But he is very aware that things have changed. “It’s really impressive,” Reid said. “If people could see what they’re getting for their $50, $60, $70 a month. It’s really impressive.” Trumble agrees, saying the multi-million dollar investment is already paying off. “The expansion gives us some flexibility,” he said. “We can do regular maintenance and better treatment. So, yes, we’re happy.” And, yes, there were no particuAlthough the flow level is lower here, it provides a good glimpse at the larly nasty odours along the way. bars and chain system used to move the flow.

ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE - October 6 2011

Library should be open on Sundays The Arnprior Public Library punches far above its weight in so many ways. It owns more than 52,000 materials. Its annual circulation is in excess of 122,000 items. It averages 300 visitors a day. This in a town of less than 8,000. It has programs for every segment of our population. It welcomes countless community groups to the newly upgraded and expanded building on Madawaska Street. Truly impressive. But like every organization that is striving to do all it can to meet its mandate and make optimum use of its resources, the Arnprior Public Library has room for at least one more improvement. Ontario libraries have a rather odd tradition of closing their doors on Sundays. It is the one day a week many parents are home with their kids. If sports take up much of a Saturday, quiet time at home, reading for a bit, is the norm for many Canadian families on a Sunday. The same holds true for others without children at home. Sunday is the day most people have the time and inclination to sit down to do some serious reading. In many provinces, including some that only recently accepted Sunday shopping, libraries have long been open on Sundays. It just makes sense that on a day when people are slowing down, taking time to read a newspaper, magazine or book, that a public facility appealing to that group be open on their day. We say the Arnprior Public Library should take the lead in Ontario and open Sundays. This doesn’t mean spending more tax dollars on the service. The library could shut down on Mondays. It may be that after-school programs are affected, but an accommodation such as opening partly on Sunday and partial on late afternoon Mondays could be considered for now. But the benefits would surely outweigh the costs. The decision is not to be made at the council level, which is why some on Arnprior council were reluctant to comment. The decision is one that would be made at the board level. “There is no fundamental issue for why it couldn’t happen,” said Neil Salminen, library board chairman. It seems it would only take a little prodding from the public to make it happen. Imagine having a public place, already paid for by local taxpayers, to go to on a hot summer Sunday - or cold winter Sunday, for that matter - where you didn’t have to spend money in order to enjoy yourself. Makes sense to us. The library’s already impressive statistics would likely jump even more.

Think of the future: don’t litter To the editor: The amount of garbage people throw out of their vehicle windows is very disturbing. We have just spent the last two days collecting garbage on Toner Road down to River Road to Wharf Road. Over the course of a couple hours each day, we collected two large green garbage bags filled to the top. We also collected over $5 in beer cans/bottles. On our daily walks we pick up garbage and dog poo on Golf Club Road, Toner Road, Coady Road and Hazelwood Road. We had not done the Toner Road/River Road to Wharf Road for awhile and it certainly showed. Please people, think about what you are doing with your garbage. It is disrespectful to the environment and to everyone who lives in the area. Basically all the garbage in the area of the Ottawa River ends up in the river over time. This is your and your children’s future. Please don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution. Do not litter! John, Cathy Brady Braeside

Care coach talks with town misunderstood To the editor: Re. Town considers taking over Care Coach (Chronicle-Guide, Sept. 8). This letter is in response to an article written by Derek Dunn in the ChronicleGuide and consequent communications published by local taxi owners. The heading “Town considers taking over Care Coach” and the article associated with the heading has caused great confusion for those who read this article. The heading would have one believe that the Town of Arnprior is considering taking over the operations of the Care Coach - far from the truth. Our Community Support Service Agency has approached Arnprior Town Council to investigate the Provincial Public Transportation Dedicated Gas Tax Program for specialized transportation. Our non-profit charitable organization provides individuals of all ages in our community with specialized transportation by means of the Care Coach Para-Transit Vehicle. The article written would have you believe that the Town of Arnprior would be subsidizing our Seniors Transportation Service In Town Car. This is not what the Provincial Public Transportation Dedicated Gas Tax Program is for. In the article it states that “the care

If there was, then, yes, we would be providing competition. Let us keep the facts as clear as possible. What is before our Arnprior Town Council refers solely to the Specialized Para Transit Service that we offer the Town of Arnprior and The Township of McNab-Braeside. I see this as a most positive venture having our Town Council moving forward with their investigation of the Dedicated Gas Tax Program and I look forward to working with Arnprior Town Council and staff as we move along in this process. It is unfortunate that taxi owners remain upset at a bylaw passed a few years ago affecting them. However, that is not my problem and the taxi owners disparaging rants should not go against the great work that my staff and volunteers do on a daily basis for the seniors and disabled of our community.

Gillies Grove ecosystem crucial to habitat of owls, hawks

This young barred owl showed no concern at the approach of nature-lover and photographer Russ Corbett. It continued to snooze on its perch on a fence (note the talons) on private property near Gillies Grove. Residents needn’t worry that the owl will attack cats or dogs, but mice should be afraid.

To the editor: This photo of a young Barred Owl was taken on private property close to Gillies Grove where it nested this spring. National Geographic magazine has stated that Barred Owls, like Red-Shouldered Hawks, need river bottoms and swamps as essential elements to their survivial.

The creek and wetland off of Division Street are crucial aspects of Gillies Grove, and the development being proposed at this time will cut through the very ‘heart’ of this ecosystem. Russ and Abigail Corbett Arnprior

Sexy colours now appearing in local woods

With the shortening of the days and cooling of nights, a silence has fallen over the land. Even the late summer choruses of insects have ended, and only the whisper songs of sparrows enliven walks along forest edges. Although the auditory highlights of the year have passed, our surroundings are once again visually delighting the eye. Each season brings its own visual splendour. Spring brings the explosion of spring ephemerals, those early blooming wildflowers that carpet forest floors. Next come the watercolour blushes of greens and pale yellows across the landscape as hardwood trees unfold their leaves. But, of course, nothing compares to the visual extravaganza that is now beginning. The indescribable beauty of the fall colours is here. This part of the continent puts on one of the best shows of leaf colour in the world.

MNR, police tranquilize wayward moose Back HUNTERS Country Butchers BRIER DODGE

brier.dodge@metroland.com

There was a moose on the loose in the Pakenham-Almonte area last weekend, and after a chase by the Lanark County OPP, he was caught and sedated. Officers from the Lanark County OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resources tracked down the moose, first reported by a motorist at about 6:40

p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30. The caller saw the moose along Hwy. 29 between Pakenham and Almonte. When officers arrived, there was no trace of the moose – until the next morning, when residents started reporting about 8 a.m. that the moose was tracking through backyards in the Almonte area. O n e woman reported

the moose feasted on her garden. The officers set out to limit the area that the moose could wander for safety purposes until the proper equipment could be brought on scene. Around noon Saturday, the moose was tranquilized, and residents no longer had to worry about the large unwelcome visitor in their yards.

It was one of several awards presented at the Arnprior Lions 65th Charter Night Saturday at the Nick Smith Centre. The Melvin Jones Fellow Award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. Among the highlights at the well-attended celebration were a talk by guide dog receipient Angèle Charlebois. She explained how her hearing dog, Candy, helped her deal with degenerative hearing. Local MPP (and former Lion) John Yakabuski was on hand to present Arnprior Lions Club president Jean Fong with recognition from both federal and provincial governments. Yakabuski praised the work done by the Lions Club and congratulated the local members on their 65th anniversary. Local on-air personality Dai Bassett, from Valley Heritage Radio CJHR 98.7, kept the crowd laughing as emcee of the Charter Night. The entertainer capped off the evening with some jokes and original songs.

Pakenham Public School breaks Terry Fox fundraising goal DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

PAKENHAM – Terry would have been proud. Students at the Pakenham Public School had set a goal of $1,200 for their annual Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, Sept. 28. They ended up beating that goal, and then some, raising $2,800. The Grade 7 and 8 class raised the most money of any of the classes at the school. Anna McHardy won the most money of any student, while Jillian Ferguson

raised the most money of any student in Grades 4 to 6. Ethan Lockyer raised the most money of any of his Grades 7 and 8 counterparts. The students spent the morning walking the streets of Pakenham, taking in the early autumn colours. In the afternoon, as part of a promise to the students, principal Ron Ferguson put on a dress. Later, he and several other teachers allowed themselves to get dolled up with face paint, make-up, tiaras and crazy wigs by the winning students. The Grade 7 and 8 class later took on the teachers in a dodgeball game.

Thanksgiving safety tips for pets IAN STUPP Pet talk

As guests arrive at the house for the Thanksgiving meal, keep pets that are scared of large crowds and commotions protected in a safe room, kennel or gated area in a low-traffic zone of the house. Small pets (cats and small dogs) can get stepped on, kicked accidentally or frightened from all of the noise of new guests arriving. Once all family and friends have arrived and settled, let Fido or Fluffy out to meet and greet. Keep alcoholic beverages of any kind out of pets’ reach. If alcohol is ingested, at any amount, pets can suffer from respiratory distress, possibly causing death from respiratory failure. Alcohol can also cause weakness, vomiting and possibly put your pet into a state of coma. TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING A few small boneless pieces of cooked turkey, a taste of mashed potato or even a lick of pumpkin pie shouldn’t pose a problem. However, don’t allow your pets to overindulge, as they could wind up with a case of stomach upset or diarrhea. Sage can make your Thanksgiving

stuffing taste delish, but it and many other herbs contain essential oils and resins that can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression to pets if eaten in large quantities. Cats are especially sensitive to the effects of certain essential oils. Don’t spoil your pet’s holiday by giving him raw bread dough. When raw bread dough is ingested, an animal’s body heat causes the dough to rise in his stomach. As it expands, the pet may experience vomiting, severe abdominal pain and bloating, which could become a life-threatening emergency requiring surgery. If you’re baking up Thanksgiving cakes, be sure your pets keep their noses out of the batter, especially if it includes raw eggs. They could contain salmonella bacteria that may lead to food poisoning. And chocolate, in any amount, can be poisonous to pets as well. While the humans are chowing down, give your dog their own little feast. Offer them Nylabones or made-for-pet chew bones. Or stuff their usual dinner, perhaps with a few added tidbits of turkey, vegetables (no onions) and dribbles of gravy inside a Kong toy. This will keep them busy, away from

the table and your guests. Keeping your pets on a normal diet through the holidays is the best way to maintain their health and happiness. Keep pets out of the garbage. Bones from turkey and other poultry remains can splinter and cause blockage and tearing in your pet’s throat or digestive tract. Food that has spoiled or gone moldy can cause food poisoning, tremors or

Redmen earn tie, win in latest football action The Arnprior Redmen Junior football team rallied to tie Smith Falls 21-21 Thursday. The two teams played a spirited game in keeping with their top ranking, along with St. John’s of Perth, in the RenfrewLanark division. The game on the Arnprior field capped off Arnprior District High School students’ Red and White day and the annual Pigskin Parade through the downtown. Both the offence and defence came through for the Redmen at important times during the game. Quarterback Riley Dunn had a strong game with some key runs and catches from Will Ruddy,

Garret Rancourt and Nathan Toman. The offensive line was anchored by Brandon Potter and Braydon Barr. Chris Vanderytd had a key interception to stop a Smith Falls drive and Keenan Laughlin kicked the tying point in the last few seconds of the game. Meanwhile, on the same day the Senior Redmen crushed Fellowes 46-0 in Pembroke. The coaches say all team players had a great game. The team is looking forward to going to Renfrew this Sunday (Oct. 9) for the annual Thanksgiving weekend Turkey Bowl. There are games at noon (juniors) and

Arnprior quarterback Riley Dunn hands off to running back Nathan Toman against Almonte Sept. 29 as the offensive lineman Keenan Laughlin keeps a tackler at bay. Both Redmen teams play in Renfrew Sunday at noon and 2 p.m. in the annual Turkey Bowl. 2 p.m. (seniors) at Ma-Te-Way Park. The seniors don’t play at home until

Thursday, Oct. 13, when Madawaska Valley comes for a game at noon.

ADHS rugby girls dominate in opening games; golfers finish fourth at EOSSA The Arnprior District High School senior girls rugby team has got off to a rousing start with two convincing wins. The Redmen thumped Mackenzie High School 92-0 at the Dochart field Sept. 29. The team led 55-0 at half time. Coach Glenn Wallace said his team, the defending Eastern Ontario champions, exhibited a very strong running

game and quick ball movement. Arnprior’s ability to offload in contact was key to breaking down the Mackenzie defence The offensive attack was led by Lisa Roesler, Sandra Hudson, Leah Sziladi and Kaitlyn McLeod. The forward pack was anchored by strong performance from Jess Couture, Maureen Freemark, Raegan Patrick and Rachel Boersma.

ADHS followed up with a 59-0 win over Fellowes in Pembroke Tuesday. The Redmen were scheduled to host two games today, with Opeongo coming to play at noon and undefeated Bishop Smith at 4:30 p.m. GOLF EOSSA Arnprior District High School golfers finished fourth out of 11 teams at

the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association championship at the Loyalist Golf & Country Club in Bath Sept. 30. Arnprior’s top scorers were Stuart Stevens with a 78, Robert Carruthers at 83, Nolan How at 90 and Jeremy Scott with a 95. All the Arnprior golfers improved over last year’s totals. The team is coach by Frank Pecora.

The Arnprior Packers got back on the winning track in Eastern Ontario Junior B hockey action on the weekend and beat their old nemesis Perth in the process. After two one-goal loss, the Packers rebounded Friday to win their home opener 4-3 over Almonte Thunder as Parker Davis scored twice against his former team. Arnprior then travelled to Perth Sunday and moved to within one point of the Valley Division leaders with an impressive 6-3 win. The victory was especially satisfying considering the trouble the Packers have had with Perth in the last couple of years. Perth coach Hamish Fraser said penalties cost his team in the fight-filled game. “Our emotions are getting to us,” he said. “That’s the sort of thing that we have to stop doing. “I’m not happy with the undisciplined play,” he added. “There’s no consistency. One shift is good, the next one goes badly.” The win boosted Arnprior above .500 and into second place in the division. The Packers were boosted by the return of last year’s Valley Division’s most valuable player Taylor Collins, who missed the two losses because of a golf commitment. Collins picked up two goals and two assists on the weekend to give him eight points in three games. Braedon Moffatt continues to lead the

team in scoring with two goals and seven assists. Shane Smith and Patrick Dick have six points apiece. The Packers attempt to stretch their winning streak to three Friday, when they host the Ottawa Junior Canadiens in the first of home and home games. Ottawa is off to a slow start this season, winning only one of its first five games. The Packers go to Ottawa for a rematch Tuesday, Oct. 11, before hosting home games against Stittsville and Gatineau Oct. 14 and 16.

He joins head coach Dan Church and fellow assistant coach Danielle Goyette behind the bench. Now entering his seventh season directing the Cornell women’s hockey program in 2011-12, Derraugh has quickly brought the Big Red women to their place among the nation’s elite. Taking a program that won just four games in the season prior to his arrival, Derraugh guided the Big Red to the national title game in his fifth season and back-toback NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2010 and 2011.

The ADHS Redmen senior girls basketball teams has improved its record to a league-leading 4-0 after two more wins in the last week. The Redmen defeated Opeongo 29-19 Sept. 29 as Dana Lascelle led the way with 12 points. Solid defensive play for most of the game held an athletic, hard-working Opeongo squad to under 20 points. The Joe Lavoie coached team followed up with a crushing 62-2 win over Bishop Smith Tuesday in Pembroke. The Junior Redmen suffered their first loss of the season Sept. 29, falling 43-27 to Opeongo despite Emma Shoveller’s 14 points. ADHS rebounded Tuesday to post a 35-19 win over Bishop Smith. Megan McGrath led the way with 18 points. The team is coached by Dan Lavallee.

Bantam Packers learn a great deal at CFB Petawawa the team a tour of the Military Museum located on the base. It was very informative. Back to the ice for more skating, then it was off to Danny’s Restaurant for a team meal. One by one, the boys got to know more about each other and their coaches after each of them made a brief presentation. Sunday morning brought more ice time. After lunch, the team headed to Centennial Park where they were taught how to seek cover in a trench and how to carry an injured comrade (Gervis) up a hill to safety. It was then back to the rink for the final session. After the practice, the players gathered at the Base Cenotaph, dedicated to all soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan. It was quite moving as coaches Dorken and Anderson shared their stories about some of the soldiers whose names are listed on the monument. The boys thank the coaches - Dustin Dorken, Jamie Anderson, Charles (Chuck) Aubry, Joe Shean, trainer Ron Bergsma and little coach Cameron Dorken - for a memorable weekend, to the parents who gave up their weekend for them, and the base personnel for the tour and Mock Tower jump. The goal of team-building was definitely achieved.

Coach Dustin Dorken gave his team a weekend to remember by bringing his bantam Arnprior Packers hockey players to CFB Petawawa for conditioning and team building. Arriving at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, the boys first toured the fire hall. From this point on, they had to carry a mannequin weighing 150 lb. everywhere they went. Coach Dorken’s simple request? That it not touch ground. It took a minimum crew of four to carry it around. The boys quickly learned that only through teamwork could they achieve the goal. The mannequin became quickly known as Gervis Murphy Stanley. The group then moved to the Mock Tower, where soldiers train to learn the basics of parachuting. With the help of members of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR), the boys were prepared for their jump. From the comments received, they had quite the thrill jumping off the tower and trusting that the safety harness would do its work. A grueling three-hour practice then ensued. The next morning, the boys, and Gervis, made their way from the hotel to the rink for more onice training. After lunch, coach Dorken gave

Kate Burman is serving a co-op placement with the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide this semester.

John O’Neill Sales Representative

Co-op student tries hand at newspapering Hello world of print, my name is Kate Burman. I am in Grade 11 at Arnprior District High School and I am currently a co-op student for the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. For those of you who are uncertain as to what co-op is, it is a program that allows students to gain skills and experience in a work place environment. I will be here until January 2012 to tell you what’s happening at the high school. I am a drama geek, plain and simple. I love to participate in musicals, plays and I even tried my hand at a Shakespeare production last semester. Just to show you how theatre obsessed I am, this summer I went to Stratford and saw Camelot and Jesus Christ Superstar. As I walked into the Avon Theatre, I was in awe just by seeing the beautiful chandelier hanging from the ceiling. It was quite the experience. I heard there was talk that Jesus Christ Superstar would be heading to Broadway in New York City. This semester already has me delving into unknown waters, as I joined the school’s jazz choir, Red Velvet, and I applied for my first steady, parttime job. This summer was definitely one of the best ones yet. I went to the premiere of the last Harry Potter movie with some amazing people and even made friends with a Bellatrix Lestrange and a Neville Longbottom enthusiast. I also had my first summer job experience at the town library and had an incredible time there. I decided to go on a photography stint and take one picture a day for the whole summer. I took pictures of everything from buildings to people to the good old standby of flowers. This summer I also got quite in tune with my crafty side and Mod Podged, cut and pasted to my heart’s content. Yes, my summer was amazing, but in the end I am glad to be back to school and into a daily routine. I am very excited for the incredible experience this semester at the Chronicle-Guide and I can’t wait to get started.

The McNab-Braeside Fire Department is shoring up its ranks and inviting prospective members to drop in at open houses planned at all three township stations. In the first event of its kind, the department will open the doors of the Glasgow, Braeside and White Lake stations on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. The department would like to hire about 12 new firefighters for the volunteer department. Members are being hired

for each of the three stations, explains McNab-Braeside fire Chief Ken Walton “There will be firefighters at each station to answer any questions and to show anybody who’s interested the equipment and vehicles,” said Walton. “As well there will be application packages at each of the station for people to pick up,” said Walton. The minimum age requirement is 18 and applicants will have to complete a physical fitness test. Looking for people who have a driver’s license and can work towards getting their DZ li-

cense, can make a once-a-week commitment to training and who are in good physical condition, said Walton. They must be able to make the time commitment, said Walton, one of the reasons several members have left the department. “Availability is definitely a big issue,” said Walton. Someone who works out of town all week, 9 to 5, is not the most suitable candidate, said Walton. Employers need to be flexible when it comes to firefighters leaving for emergency calls and often they are, said Walton.

Responding to calls is just one of the many duties of a volunteer firefighter, said Walton. Training, fundraising, fire prevention and community event work are all included in the job, said Walton. Successful candidates undergo an initial 12-week training schedule, but training continues throughout the duration of the position. People often wonder about the compensation for firefighters, said Walton, explaining that while it’s a volunteer position, there is a points system that determines the stipend given to each member of the de-

partment. In McNab-Braeside, the funds come through in December, a nice boost in Christmas money for members, said Walton. It’s a great way of giving back to the community, said Walton, and with a department made up of all different professions – contractors, electricians, plumbers and more – you make contacts in a variety of fields. “You make a lot of really good friends,” he said. One new member joined the department because he was new to the area and found it a great way to get to know the community and the people in it.

User agreements should be negotiated council to council: McNab-Braeside

Century 21

“I’m all for discussions, but we have to get the discussions on some unit of measurement,” she said. “If you can’t measure it folks, you can’t manage it.” Campbell stressed she didn’t want the issue to turn into a “wrangle” between the municipalities. The Nick Smith Centre runs a rather large deficit, noted Campbell, adding she’s not sure town-

ship residents want to be subsidizing the facility. “We’re going to base our payment on who is ultimately using the Nick Smith Centre in McNabBraeside,” she said. “Myself, I’d rather all of council be involved in discussions, not just one of us,” said Coun. Brad McIlquham. Council agreed with Campbell that negotiations should be done

with all members of each council present in a forum open to the public. The township recently renewed its user agreements with Renfrew. “The agreement with Renfrew was very cut and dried,” said Styles. If it turns out Arnprior is not able to provide the data, the township may have to set up its own system of tracking.

“If it costs us more, at least we know what we’re paying for and the numbers who use it,” said Styles. Coun. Aldene Styles questioned whether council couldn’t build on the existing agreements. “It seems like we’re re-inventing the wheel here,” she said. Campbell noted a standing committee must be made up of at least two members of council.

Voter interest strong in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Voting was brisk in both RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke and across Ontario in days leading up to today’s election. As of Oct. 1, preliminary figures indicated that 624,958 electors cast their ballot for the provincial general election. This is an increase from the 451,949 electors who voted at an advance poll, the only early voting option for the 39th general election in 2007. A total of 8,762 Renfrew Nipissing Pembroke voters cast ballots early, the fourth highest in any Eastern Ontario riding.

Carleton-Mississippi Mills was a close fourth with 8,739 voters. The rise is being credited to both interest in what is expected to be a very close race province-wide and an increase of advance polling stations and ways to vote. On election day today (Thursday), there there will be more than 70,000 election workers at more than 24,000 polls in over 7,700 voting locations across Ontario. Voters are encouraged to check their voter card or visit the Elections Ontario website to find out where and when to vote.

OPP target bad, distracted drivers on long weekend The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be joining tens of thousands of Canadian police partners over the Thanksgiving long weekend for Operation Impact. It’s an annual nation-wide traffic enforcement and education campaign aimed at saving lives and reducing injuries on

roads throughout the country. From 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 to 11:59 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, the OPP and police services across Canada will be relentlessly targeting impaired drivers, those who drive aggressively or while distracted as well as those who are not compliant with

seat belt and child restraint laws. During the four-day campaign the OPP will be updating the public about the results of their enforcement efforts on Twitter and Facebook. During that time they will be looking to Ontarians to help educate the motoring public about safe driving by

joining in the conversation on Facebook. The start of Operation Impact coincides with the launch of the OPP Fall Seatbelt Campaign. From Oct. 7 to 17, OPP officers will be highly visible throughout the province as they carry out targeted enforcement of seat belt and child restraint laws.

#3840 Regan

# 4046 Bear

Regan was brought to the shelter last September after she had been straying for some time. Within a day of being here, she gave birth to five beautiful kittens. Regan is a very sweet little girl who is about three years old. She is an affectionate cat who likes attention and enjoys being groomed. She tolerates other cats but really prefers her own space. She is quiet and loves to lay on her pillow in the window bird watching. She is easy to handle, gentle, and a very clean cat. Regan would be fine with children, she also is good with dogs. She will make a wonderful companion for her new family.

Bear is a four-and-a-half-month-old neutered male who was found with his siblings when they were only two weeks old. All were placed in foster care for extra TLC. Bear is a sweet little cat who loves attention and is very affectionate. He is very used to being handled and loves to snuggle. Bear is good with other cats and absolutely loves dogs. Bear is available for viewing by appointment only.

Supplies the shelter needs: paper towels, canned dog food, canned cat food and dog treats. You can call the Arnprior and District Humane Society at 613-623-0916 between noon and 5 p.m Monday to Saturday or visit www.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca

Rural Ramble wraps last weekend on artistic note LUCY HASS lucy.hass@metroland.com

Another successful Rural Ramble celebration is in the history books. The final weekend wrapped up Sunday afternoon with a salute to culture and the arts. In McNab-Braeside Township, the spotlight shone on Ballintotas Alpacas in Braeside and the Celtic heritage weaving skills of Bob Hinchley at Kippen Tartans. Since 2003 Shannon and Chris Rouleau have operated their alpaca farm, named after the small town in Ireland where Shannon’s late father was born. The cashmere-like fibre is shorn from the alpacas once a year and used in handcrafts such as socks, blankets, mittens, scarves and more. The environment-friendly products are promoted as soft, hypo-allergenic, lightweight and breathable. People interested in checking out their product line can see them out at the Cobden Taste of the Valley Oct. 15, the Deep River Christmas Craft Show Nov. 5 and 6, Christkindlemart Nov. 26 to 27 in Pembroke, and the Cobden Christmas Craft Show Dec. 3 and 4. The doors were also opened at Kippen Tartans where Bob Hinchley showcased the fruits of a hobby he first embraced in the early 2000s. The event is organized by the Ottawa

Arnprior OPP say a sexual assault complaint was falsely made regarding an incident Sept. 24. On Sept. 26, OPP issued a press release that a sexual assault happened Saturday evening on Albert Street, near the Water Pollution Control Plant and St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church. A woman was walking alone

when attacked by a stranger, OPP indicated, adding she received “minor injuries.” Later on that Monday, OPP issued a second press release. “The police investigation and subsequent information received by police indicates that it was a false complaint,” it read. “An assault did not occur. No charges are pending against the complainant.” The Chronicle-Guide posted information from the first press release on its Facebook page.

One commenter said woman shouldn’t be walking outside at night. Another dozen or more disagreed strongly, saying women have the right to walk anywhere without being assaulted.

The second press release was also posted. It generated 10 comments early on, largely from people relieved to hear no one was injured. One commenter said the woman should be charged for mis-

Gill tribute to County 150, Jamaica complements Burnstown, Calabogie Festival of the Senses LUCY HASS lucy.hass@metroland.com

Richard Gill and Cheryl Babineau welcome visitors to their annual fall show at Bittersweet Gallery in Burnstown. The show runs until Thanksgiving Monday, Oct.10.

This year his show, which runs daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Oct. 10, features 94 sculpted clay relief images. Among the reproductions were Hotel Renfrew, the former train station, Low Square and the Mackay Block. There is also a showcase of 30 pieces inspired

by a brief trip to Jamaica. Sponsored by the Calabogie and Area Business Association, the Festival of the Senses featured 29 stops. The Renfrew Art Guild show at the community hall featured 20 artists and a tea room hosted by the Calabogie Women’s Institute. The Greater Madawaska Recreation Committee hosted a family event to build and fly a kite, and Calabogie MotorSports Park offered guided laps and invited guests to watch track events. In loving memory of our dear Jamie who left us so suddenly and tragically while at work, October 6, 2009. He is gone, but not forgotten, And, as it dawns another year, In our lonely hours of thinking, Thoughts of him are always near. Days of sadness will come o’er us, Many think the wound is healed, But they little know the sorrow, That lies in the heart concealed. Delanie and son Greysen Mom and Dad Jason and Maneau Rod

I’m watching the rain fall In my mind I hear you call. If only it could be real Even with God I tried to make a deal. Let him live and be with me, But God said “My child, don’t you see, It’s his time now to come back home And you are left on earth alone.” I cried, no, please I need him here To feel his love, I hold so dear. I cannot live my life alone, My heart will most surely turn to stone. “Have faith”, God said to me, “Give it time and you will see I never give you more than you can bear. Believe and your faith will get you there. He will always be with you wherever you are, Gone from your sight, but not very far. Remember I only loaned him to you, He had done everything I had asked him to do. You will be together again at some point in time Keep thinking of him and his spirit will shine. Dry your tears and know what I say is true, He will always be there for you.”

Remembrance is a golden chain, Death tries to break, But all in vain. To have, to love, and then to part, Is the greatest sorrow of one’s heart. The years may wipe out many things, But some they wipe out never. Like memories of those happy times, When we were all together.
