Racing fair game Horse racing, solar barn in the works JOHN CARTER

MAKING TRACKS

While the tracks are being pulled up and shipped out along the CP line up the Valley, there is still hope that the CN line can be saved. 6

FIRE STRIKES

Horse racing and a solar barn are still in the works for the Arnprior Fairgrounds, says Arnprior Agricultural Society president Jeff Desarmia. The two additions will be a major step forward for the society and help continue its efforts to make the Arnprior Fair one of the most impressive in the Valley. The fair had another strong outing on the weekend, with a particularly strong crowd Saturday taking advantage of the sunny weather and the demolition derby. Despite a hiccup with the last-minute decision to back away from holding a beer garden, fair board members were generally pleased with the public response. Desarmia said the fair board decided the Wednesday before the fair to withdraw its beer tent application because of the cost of security and the threat of liability for the society member who had to sign the forms. The whole beer garden issue and the new rules that came into effect June 1 allowing beer-drinkers freer rein to move around the site if the permit so specifies is confusing and troublesome, said Desarmia. However, he is much more buoyant about the changes that will come about with the building of the solar barn and the revival of harness racing at the fairgrounds next spring.

Sandvik workers back on the job DEREK DUNN

The 27-day-old Sandvik strike at the Arnprior plant drew to a close with the ratification of a collective agreement Monday afternoon, Aug. 8. The Canadian Auto Workers union, representing 157 workers, voted 80.6 per cent in favour of the company’s final of-

fer. The contract is good for three years, something that pleases both management and the union. Some employees were back to work Tuesday, with the bulk of them back to regular shifts Wednesday. One issue had to do with workers’ return time; some were not expected back for another couple of weeks.

A 140-year-old farm house between Pakenham and Arnprior burned down early last Friday. Both Ottawa and Arnprior fire departments responded but the home was a total loss. 7
