Arnprior council approved a development despite a roomful of residents voicing opposition at Tuesday’s meeting.

Mayor David Reid said the land in front of the Grove Nursing Home and extending to Division Street has been slated for moderate development for many years. The proposal made it through various studies, official plans and a public meeting with little opposition, he noted, adding he agrees it should be approved for greater density.

He expects the nursing home’s expansion plans will be respected, and additional infrastructure costs such as larger water pipes will be born by the developer.

John Yakabuski of the Progressive Conservatives swept to victory in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, but it was not to be for his party province-wide when Ontarians took to the polls Oct. 6.

In a provincial election with the lowest voter turnout in history with only 49.02 per cent of potential voters marking a ballot, the Liberals fell one seat short of a majority government with 53 seats.

Yakabuski, the Singing MPP, was reelected to a third term with what appears to be the biggest margin across Ontario – snaring an impressive 70.8 per cent of the vote.

When the final results were tallied, Yakabuski had 27,594 votes. Liberal John O’Leary earned 16% of the vote, NDP Brian Dougherty 11%, Green Party Kyle Jones 1.5% and Confederation of Regions Murray Reid 0.8 per cent.

MPP’s victory tainted by brother-in-law’s death

Continued from front The victory was bittersweet for Yakabuski, who announced in his victory speech that his brother-in-law Robert Smith, of the Eganville area, had been killed in an accident earlier in the day.

Pundits say the impressive win may give the popular MPP even more prominence in the party.

The Toronto Star quotes sources as saying Yakabuski will remain Tory House leader, but his recent Grit and NDP counterparts — Monique Smith and Peter Kormos — have retired.

Voter turnout in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke was 53.7%, down from around 57% in the last provincial election in 2007, says returning officer Lewis MacDonald.

Voting in advance polls was way up, however, reports MacDonald. The number of days of advance polling

and number of polls was up significantly this time.

“This time, although voting was down, the advance poll is up a lot. I’m not sure what that means,” said MacDonald.

There were about 7,200 advance votes cast in 2007, while this time it appears the number will be up over 10,000, as special ballot tallies are still being finalized.

It was also a blue wave east of Renfrew County Oct. 6, as both Randy Hillier in Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington and Jack MacLaren in Carleton-Mississippi Mills retained the Conservative hold over the region.

Both MPPs are well-known in this area, having made their name by being politically active in the Ontario and local Landowners’ associations.

Liberal Dalton McGuinty has managed to secure a third term as premier in Ontario, winning a 53-seat minority that was only one seat short of his coveted third majority.

In his late night victory speech the premier refused to concede a minority, suggesting “we may not know for several days what the results will be in all the ridings” and that those tight races could yet give him his third majority.

Tim Hudak’s Progressive Conservatives scored 37 seats, adding 12 to their ranks, and the New Democrats led by Andrea Horwath took 17, adding seven.

That one-short minority could easily turn into a majority over the course of McGuinty’s third term.

Jonathon Malloy, political science professor at Carleton University and an expert on Ontario politics, said that with a “major minority” of 53 seats, the Liberals could be looking to attract members from another party across the floor in order to secure a majority.

“With 53 seats, you have to think that you only need one person, one Belinda Stronach-type figure,” Malloy said. “Both Mr. Hudak and Ms. Horwath will have to be a little sensitive to the fact that if they anger just one member, they could get

schools around the riding. Yakabuski won 43.4 per cent of the student vote (2,004 votes), with the Liberals coming in at 17.7, the NDP at 17.6 and the Green Party at 16.7. Confederation of Regions candidate Murray Reid received 215 youth votes (4.7 per cent), almost as many as he received in the adult election.

R-N-P had 35 schools report results from the student vote, the highest of any electoral district in the province.

Across Ontario, more than 320,000 students under voting age cast ballots in Student Vote and elected an NDP minority government (41 seats) just ahead of the Liberal opposition (39 seats).

The Progressive Conservatives won 24 seats, up from 11 in 2007. The Green Party won three seats, a big drop from the 17 they got in 2007’s Student Vote.

McGuinty was greeted like a celebrity at his campaign wrap-up at the Chateau Laurier downtown Ottawa, where a tense but giddy crowd gathered in the elegant ballroom to watch the results roll in. Spontaneous cheers rose up now and then as the Liberals hit 54 seats time and again, with seat counts flip-flopping between 53 and 54 for several hours.

McGuinty’s speech was gracious and hinted at the party’s close brush with failure this election.

“Ontarians are telling us, ‘We are placing our trust in you but we expect you to work even harder, listen more than ever, give us nothing but your best every day.

But most of all we demand that you lead.’

Because we are Ontario and that’s what we do. We lead,” he told the crowd.

The tight race didn’t seem to resonate with voters, however, since the election yielded the lowest voter turnout in Ontario’s history. Malloy said the all-time low turnout of 49.2 per cent (down from 52.8 per cent in the 2007 provincial election) is “very concerning.”

“Here is a great, competitive race, with the outcome so uncertain, and yet large numbers of people don’t turn out,” Malloy said, adding that research hasn’t yielded a clear answer of what factors contribute to low voter turnout.

Mayors to discuss service deal Name change DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The mayors of Arnprior and McNabBraeside have agreed to meet this week to deal with the contentious service agreements issue.

Arnprior Mayor David Reid’s council agreed to form a behind-closed-doors joint committee that will follow certain guidelines when discussing how much McNab-Braeside residents should pay for use of the town-owned library and sports centre.

However, township Mayor Mary Campbell’s council opted last week against joining the committee, saying discussions should be done in an open forum between all members of both councils.

Township residents pay about $55 per person, or $36,000 a year for library access; and $102,000 for use of the Nick Smith Centre.

“I’ll be meeting with Mary this week,�

Reid said. “I think everyone would agree that we want to do this as amicably as possible. We’re just not sure what forum yet.�

A side issue is whether or not the library should provide the names and addresses of people using the service.

Township councillors say it would give more precise information that would benefit them in deciding how to spend tax dollars. The library board says the information is protected under the provincial privacy act.

Reid said he doubts town council could pressure the library into releasing the information, even if it wanted to do so.

The library is an arm’s length entity.

He agreed that at some point the process will have to be open to public scrutiny. But he maintains it is not unusual that a committee would be struck to do the preliminary work.

Grove could be at risk: councillor

OPPOSITION ARGUMENTS The lone councillor siding with opponents was Mark Willmer. He agreed that developers “have rights, too,� but that council isn’t obliged to approve more dwellings than already allowed. He didn’t accept that the buffer zone was large enough to protect certain species, and that approval could put Gillies Grove at risk. “It could change the grove and change the whole forest,� Willmer said.

He also said natural areas are both an economic and tourist draw.

Russ Corbett spoke against the development, saying many people fought and gave money to save Gillies Grove in the past. They wanted it saved forever, he said, not for a few years then given way to development.

He said there is no happy medium, but the town should offer a land swap.

He noted that Margaret Gillies gave the seven acres to Don Johnston for inkind work with the caveat that he could build one dwelling for himself. The 25year agreement is now expired.

Johnston countered in a letter saying “single family homes� could be built.

Corbett also said, after the meeting, that Johnston clearcut healthy trees a few years ago with the ministries of natural resources and environment saying it is the town’s responsibility to monitor.

Johnston maintains the trees were rotten and hauled off for firewood.

Johnston is pleased with council’s decision to zone the land Residential 1. He is convinced the entire plan will materialize, though some opponents maintain the marsh-like land isn’t stable enough. “They put the nursing home on the same type of land,� Johnston said. “It’s all the same type of land.�

Doug Johnston, who was at the meeting, wasn’t fazed by the crowd of opponents. “I think everybody tends to have their own interests. Most people don’t like change,� he said. “There wasn’t anything in the comments that wasn’t addressed.�

Reid said it is ironic that many of the opponents now live in homes that were once considered part of the Grove.

The last of the Highway 417 ramps at the White Lake Road overpass in Arnprior was due to open Wednesday.

However, Arnprior council learned it can go ahead with changing the name of the road for next summer.

Council agreed to change the name of White Lake Road to Daniel Street from the centreline of Highway 417 to Baskin Drive, starting in July.

With the completion of the new clover-leaf interchange, the entrance has been signed White Lake Road, Arnprior, White Lake, 1 km coming from either direction. And at the intersection with White Lake Road, the roadway is signed White Lake Road with ‘North’ and ‘South’ directions indicated and arrowed correctly.

Also, under the words White Lake Road are directions to both Arnprior and White Lake from either direction.

Six civic addresses will require changing, and the replacement of several ministry of transportation signs. They will come at no cost to the town.

Reeve Walter Stack also favoured the move, saying the province encourages “infill� or urban densification. He agreed with Reid that many opposing arguments – including traffic and environmental - will be dealt by town staff during later phases. Many concerns were already countered by town consultants, he added.

Coun. Ted Strike said he read and heard all the concerns, but that the land was severed from Gillies Grove before the forest was saved for public enjoyment. “I can’t see any reason to holding this up,� Strike said.

Coun. Lynn Grinstead asked town staff to confirm there are no Gillies Grove pathways through the Johnstons’ property. Coun. Dan Lynch was told the zoning can revert back in future to less density, if need be. Councillors Lyle Anderson didn’t give a reason to council or the crowd of 17 residents for voting in favour.

Pilon’s honours front door ambassador SHERRY HAAIMA

Things just won’t be quite the same at Pilon Family Funeral Home without the front door ambassador at his post.

Gerry Kuehl has spent almost 15 years as a doorman at Pilon’s and now that health challenges are causing him to retire, his “family” there wants him to know just how much he’ll be missed.

He was honoured when his friends from Pilon held a dinner for him at the Staye House last week.

“It was really nice,” said Kuehl. “It was great to see everybody – even some of the older, retired employees came out.”

The 81-year-old came to his post at Pilon’s after a career in management positions in local industry and at a car dealership.

His connection with Pilon’s was made when he attended services for an acquaintance.

“I was amazed at the professionalism,” he said.

Looking for some parttime work, he mentioned the idea to Andre Pilon, and the rest, as they say, is history.

It’s more than a job, says Kuehl, it’s a family.

“We’re all very supportive of each other and everyone knows their job and does it well,” he says.

“Andre is an excellent person to work for and a very kind and generous person.”

There is a certain satisfaction that comes with helping families in their time of need, as they mourn a loved one, says Kuehl.

“People in that position often need encouragement and support. It’s nice to be

able to give that. You feel good doing the job.”

What he’ll miss most about his job is the people – talking to his co-workers, being a part of the crew.

The feeling is certainly mutual.

Pilon’s owner Andre Pilon says rather than a doorman, Gerry is known as the front door ambassador.

“He’s the most nonjudgemental person I’ve ever met. He’s kind and genuine and he’s certainly going to be missed,” says Pilon.

Kuehl, a “classy and elegant” man, has been a valuable asset at the funeral home, says Pilon. “Curb appeal is very important but people appeal is, too.

He’s just a great person.”

Kuehl’s wife Lois, his family and his friends are rallying around him to support him in his illness.

The Arnprior Airport Commission is satisfied with its $56,000 allocation and won’t ask for more during December’s round of municipal budget talks.

Barry Mason presented the airport’s 2012 budget to council at Tuesday’s meeting.

“We are not expecting an increase this year,” Mason said, topping off a list of four “good news” points and two “bad news.”

Also on the good side was the creation of an All Weather Observation System that will allow for more planes to land during inclement weather. It is maintained at no cost by ATS Technology Systems.

A federal grant meant the airport could resurface a taxiway.

And two new tie-down pads were built for the Mile High Parachute Club, freeing up two tie-downs in front of the terminal.

However, the bad news is that contaminated land has “put a hold” on a second subdivision for hangars.

The cost of aviation fuel means fewer fliers, though Arnprior’s rate at 1.59 per litre is competitive with Ottawa’s $2.

There were 19 Medivacs this year. The Fly-In Breakfast was the best yet at 905 meals served.

Many cracks were filled in the tarmac.

Community groups used the airport as much as last year.

And the Vintage Wings event drew more than 500 spectators.

Mason said 2012 will be a “challenging” year that may see a second flight school on board.

Customers new and old, along with family and friends will gather at Braeside Home Furnishings this weekend to celebrate an impressive feat: 50 years in business.

Pressed up against River Road in a village far removed from an urban centre, the furniture store has overcome massive odds to, not just survive, but actually thrive. Although from the road the store looks small, the inventory exceeds most large chain stores, stacked in two onsite warehouses and two others nearby. Braeside Home Furnishings also offers free delivery to most of Eastern Ontario.

Delivery man Andy Dentinger was about to hop in a full truck for destinations in Deep River and Prescott one morning last week. He enjoys working for a family-centred company.

“It’s just a great company to work for,” Dentinger said. “They’ll bend over backwards for you and you don’t get that everywhere.”

Roger and Bridgette Perreault started the business in 1961. Roger, who was working at a furniture store in Arnprior, figured with all the cars passing through Braeside, a businessman could make a go of it. People called him crazy and said it would never work.

Now, on a good day, 300 cars have been counted. Not only that, but with the website, and customers who research best prices, the store has only to live up to its reputation for quality products.

The formula worked well for the Perreaults, who raised seven children and became productive members of the village and surrounding areas. One of those kids, John, took over the business in 1990.

However, since 2002 Perrault has had a co-owner in Braeside Home Furnishings.

One day in 1991, in walked Cathy Brennan with a girlfriend. Perreault asked the car business worker if she was looking for part time work in bookkeeping. She told her husband, Mickey, who warned her against it. She did the opposite.

Time is running out for low-income property owners to take advantage of a program that could see their homes insulated for free.

Delivered by EnviroCentre, a non-profit environmental group that has put new insulation in 300 Ottawa area homes, the retrofit program is paid for through Enbridge Gas Home Weatherization.

However, EnviroCentre’s Jessica Sheridan said getting older homes in the Valley properly insulated will do wonders for the environment and pocketbooks.

“We’re going to Arnprior, Renfrew, Almonte, Carleton Place and other towns to spread the word among rural homeowners,” she said. “They’ll get a free audit, free installation and between $2,000 and $5,000 worth of insulation.”

Not only that, but homeowners report saving up to $500 a year on their energy bills. EnviroCentre has charged another

700 homes for the work, and say it saves about 30 per cent if a basement and attic are done.

It makes homes warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

The challenge is: the program is over on Dec. 31. So those who think they qualify must contact them quickly.

The program isn’t for landlords, but is for renters who pay energy bills.

Who cares?

Everyone welcome at the multi-faith Galilee Centre

T

he weather was sunny. The date was set years ago. Advance polling options were more numerous than

ever.

And still, voter turnout in Ontario on Oct. 6 hit an all-time low.

Apathy, that most heinous of political sins, abounded in Ontario.

Dalton McGuinty narrowly missed a majority re-election and will have to settle for a 53-seat minority government.

But with less than half of eligible voters marking an “X,” we have to wonder if his government really represents the will of the electorate.

McGuinty’s Liberals picked up 37.62 per cent of the popular vote.

But since only about five million voters hit the polls, only about 22 per cent of the approximately 8.5 million eligible voters favoured a Liberal government.

Officially, the turnout recorded on Oct. 6 was 49.2 per cent.

That was down from the previous all-time low, which was set in – wait for it – 2007, during the last provincial election.

There was one bright light in this apathetic mess.

Improved advance polling and other options to make casting a ballot more accessible were successful: 650,000 Ontarians voted before election day with high advance poll turnouts in both local ridings.

At least Ontario is still doing better than the Northwest Territories, where 35 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in a recent election. But Manitoba’s general election last week yielded 57 per cent turnout.

PEI had an astounding 76 per cent turnout – and that was low for the Maritime province.

So what is the issue here?

Are our leaders too boring? Did the issues and platforms fail to resonate with citizens? Have people lost sight of their civic duty?

Voter turnout can be a pretty accurate measure of how much we care. Here in the Ottawa Valley, after three elections – municipal, federal and now provincial – in less than 365 days, it’s probably safe to say that voters were simply tired of caring.

To The Editor: In 1946 OMI Lacombe purchased McLachlin estate, which was built in the 1800s. In 1975 the property was developed into a Retreat and Conference Centre and named Galilee. In 1988 it was registered as a non-profit charitable organization called the Galilee Mission Centre of Arnprior (GMCA).

It is sponsored by OMI Lacombe with a mission to provide an environment, programs and hosting services, which nurture people’s personal and spiritual growth, enabling them to contribute to a healthier world. We encourage more of the public to get to know what Galilee is all about. It is truly a welcoming holistic spiritual life centre that is an oasis of peace, care and comfort.

While the Centre is rooted in Christian belief, it is very much a multi-faith facility.

Because use of the location has changed over the years, some people may not know about the options, programs and hosting going on at Galilee. Feel free to drop by to see our very hospitable staff, Debbie Fougere and Susan Mangotich at the administration desk and pick up a brochure designed by Vito Michienci while you’re there. As well, our competent weekend office staff, Sandie Anderson and Louise Boucher will gladly assist you with your questions.

The Centre can accommodate over 40 people with meals and accommodations.

The Centre has several main conference rooms plus a variety of smaller rooms for intimate gatherings. The main building complex as a whole includes 36 bedrooms, three conference rooms, a dining room and a grand formal staircase to the second floor chapel. You can nurture your body, mind and spirit with scheduled labyrinth walks (inside or outside), yoga, prayer and meditation sessions.

We have a fitness centre and massage therapy sessions could also be arranged. Our cleaning and safety/security staff made up of Florence St. Denis and Alan Budarick looks after all your needs and than some. The Centre is on a 35-acre property that boasts of walking paths, community gardens, a greenhouse, honey bees (starting in the spring), a private beach and plenty of space for gatherings.

You are encouraged to bring your sports equipment for tennis, volleyball, horse-shoes, swimming, canoeing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Our maintenance man Daryl Streich does an excellent job keeping our grounds and equipment ready for all seasons.

A host of other volunteers called ‘Friends of Galilee’” offer their services in numerous ways through very generous gifts and donations or work in kind.

Finally, on Oct. 21 of this year, we are hosting a fundraising concert at St. John’s Parish Hall called ‘Down Memory Lane’ at a cost of $15 per person and $10 for seniors. This will raise much needed funds to assist bringing our facilities forward.

Dinner theatre is back.

Members of the Prior Players have started rehearsing for their fall production of Norm Foster’s The Long Weekend.

Returning to the stage are four veteran actors, Dave Anthony, Colleen Lacasse, Kim Oliver and Grey Masson. This hilarious comedy takes twists and turns as the two couples try to enjoy a weekend get-away.

In true Foster style, the antics of the two couple will keep the audience in stitches.

The past few performances have had different venues associated with Prior Players’ 20th anniversary. It is now time to bring back the popular dinner theatre, members agree.

Theatre patrons can enjoy dinner theatre on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12. Regular theatre tickets are also available on these nights.

On the following weekend, Friday, Nov. 18 will be an evening performance and then on Saturday, Nov. 19 the Prior Players are offering a matinee.

On a late September evening two weeks ago with the neon sign blinking in the background, I was witness to some amazing talent.

I’m talking about Arnprior District High School’s own Coffee House that took place in our homey little cafeteria with all the lunch tables pushed aside.

I heard everything from different takes on covers to students’ original compositions. The talent was overwhelming and I definitely encourage more student participation. The next coffee house date is to be announced.

CRASH TEST DUMMY Last week ADHS was graced by the

eccentric personality of Mitch Dorge, drummer of Crash Test Dummies. Dorge captivated the audience the minute he started talking.

The first half of Dorge’s presentation consisted of him telling the audience who he was and then came audience participation, which consisted of students coming out of their comfort zones by making musical instruments out of two people, purring like a kitten and making music with a chicken.

All the horsing around and playing the fool was great fun. After a short break, Dorge became more serious, talking about the effects of drunk driving, one case in particular.

At the end of his talk he gave the students a very epic drum solo.

I must say, Mr. Dorge, I applaud you for keeping teens’ attention for two hours.

For the past 31 years, Seniors Home Support has provided community-based home support services to the residents of Arnprior and McNab-Braeside.

Over these years, the agency has provided invaluable services and social programs for area seniors, disabled and individuals with special needs.

About 46 per cent of the agency’s budget comes through a grant from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care channeled through the Champlain Local Health Integration Network.

The remaining part of the Seniors Home Support budget is realized through nominal client fees, fundraising efforts and generous donations through the annual door-to-door canvass.

Financial contributions from the 2010 canvass assisted in making it possible for

the agency to provide the following: 6,887 transportation trips to 386 individual clients, 1,282 home maintenance hours to 56 individual clients, 571 meals to 118 individual Diners Club patrons and 960 contacts through our fiendly visiting and telephone security program.

There were also 930 foot care appointments to 191 individual clients, weekly shopping services to 26 area seniors, 1,525 frozen meals to 38 clients, 235 individual income tax returns completed.

In addition to these programs Seniors Home Support has recently created a Computer Club offering training to seniors in the area as well as a Book Club.

A Hot Meals Program in collaboration with Chuck Wagon has also been established in the community.

“As you can see, you have made a difference in the lives of our area seniors with your donations. I ask that you give generously when the Young Voyageur Club volunteer knocks on your door,” said executive director Dennis Harrington.

“It is your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles that benefit from your donation and the services we can offer with those donations”.

Participants wishing to clean-up a certain public area in Town are asked to provide their PITCH-IN Day location at the time of registering.

Should I or my group bring garbage bags?

NO! The Town will be supplying the garbage bags and picking up/disposing of the garbage bags.

Participant Reminders…

•Dress appropriately for the weather and conditions. Participants are encouraged to bring extra clothing, gardening or latex gloves, closed toe shoes, etc.

•Young children must be supervised by an adult during the clean-up to ensure safety, as some litter items may be hazardous •NEVER handle sharp items, needles, items that are not easily identifiable, too heavy, etc.

•Watch out for wildlife, nests, and to not disturb the natural habitat •Have fun!

The Town is encouraging participants to separate garbage from recyclables (cans, bottles, etc.)! Blue boxes will be available at the Robert Simpson Park location ONLY. However, participants cleaning other areas of Town are encouraged to collect recyclables in a separate garbage bag, and drop them off at the blue boxes at Robert Simpson Park. Let’s Recycle!

These cheeky squirrels dine on small ground-nesting birds and also climb small shrubs and even taller trees to snatch helpless baby songbirds from their nest.

Chipmunks also kill and eat frogs. A friend of mine recently watched and photographed a chipmunk kill a large Leopard Frog. The death was not a quick one for the chipmunk would lunge at the frog, tear a chunk out of it, and jump back. It would eat that piece and then go back for more.

When wolves and bears eat another animal, it is usually quite dead before they begin to feast.

An even smaller animal hunts all through our region, one that is likely the most sophisticated killer that lives on this continent. That creature not only bears razor sharp teeth for grabbing and killing its prey, it also has a poison bite.

It also echolocates, its ultrasonic sound waves more likely used for navigation through its vegetated terrain than to locate victims.

That animal is the Short-tailed Shrew.

Short-tailed Shrews as their name suggests sport a very short tail. That feature might make them mistaken for voles because they too have short tails. But the similarity stops there for shrews

are a charcoal gray while voles are brown.

Shrews have an extremely high metabolism and must eat relatively constantly or they die.

While shrews are generally known as being predaceous, I recently watched one repeatedly run out of a jumble of rocks and pick up cracked corn below on of my birdfeeders.

It took only one piece at a time making me wonder if it would get enough energy from each piece to replace the energy spent collecting it.

If it did not then it was not a very shrewd shrew!

WENDY MAYHEW Arnprior Amateur Wrestling Club

Are you looking for an activity for your son or daughter over the winter months?

Why not try Freestyle Wrestling (Olympic) offered by the Arnprior Amateur Wrestling Club at the Kenwood Gym? The Arnprior club has been in existence since 2004 and is open to anyone ages 8 to 18.

Wrestling is a great sport to keep your child active and in shape over the winter and is a good off-season conditioning sport for football players, soccer players as well as track and field athletes.

Wrestling has that individual feeling while competing on the mat but a team atmosphere at practice and at tournaments.

With the Arnprior club, competing is not mandatory, so an individual can come and practice and help others get ready to compete but not compete themselves.

Coaches Kevin Mayhew (head coach), Coady Yach and Laura Nicolson-Stellato have a total of 30 years of coaching experience between them. They also have competed regionally, provincially and nationally and internationally in their own wrestling careers.

With that experience behind them, the club’s coaches have also taken on the responsibility of running the wrestling pro-

grams at ADHS and a six-week session at Walter Zadow school in January.

The Arnprior Wrestling club will hold an open house/registration week starting Nov. 7 at the Kenwood Gym. Everyone is welcome to come out and get on the mat to try wrestling.

The schedule for the open house and all the practices is as follows: Monday 3:30 to 5 p.m. high school athletes and club 14-18, Tuesday 5 to 6:30 p.m. club wrestlers ages 8 to 13, Thursday 3:30 to 5 p.m. high school, and 5 to 6:30 p.m. club ages 8-18.

Kevin Mayhew will also hold an information session at the high school on Oct. 26 at lunch in Kate McKenna’s room for anyone in high school wanting more information.

The cost for each program is as follows: Club $150 (includes Ontario Wrestling Association fee), some tournaments extra; Arnprior’s Lauren McGonigal returned to the Nick Smith Centre to play in an Eastern High School $60 (includes association Region AAA Ringette Challenge Cup match on Saturday. Lauren thrilled her hometown supporters as her team, United AAA, beat Eastern 7 to 4. fee), some tournament extra.

In order to keep the costs down for families. the club does do fundraising and one of the ongoing ones is the collection of pop cans for recycling.

The Arnprior Packers are hanging on to second place in the Eastern Ontario Junior B hockey Valley Division after splitting two games with a Metro Division foe.

The Packers edged Ottawa 4-3 Friday at home, before losing 5-3 at the Brian Kilrea Arena in a rare Tuesday encounter.

Perth, who Arnprior beat 6-3 last week, moved three points ahead of the pack by thrashing Renfrew 9-2 Sunday.

Taylor Collins, who has been limited to four games by illness and other commit-

ments, paces the Packers with five goals.

His 11 points is one behind Braedon Moffatt (3-9-12). Casey Doner has moved up into third place in the club’s scoring race with seven points (2-5-7).

The Arnprior District High School senior girls rugby team has run its record to 4-0 with two more lopsided victories.

The Redmen ran over Opeongo 64-0 and previously undefeated Bishop Smith 47-0 in a doubleheader on their home pitch Oct. 6.

ADHS wraps up the regular season with a game today (Thursday) at Madawaska Valley High School and a home game against Opeongo, In Senior Girls Basketball action Oct. 4, ADHS demolished Bishop Smith 62-2.

The Redmen were led by Alexis Lough with 14

points, Shannon Power with 10, and Melissa Plascott with 8.

The game marked the return of a few injured players that provided a big lift to the team.

The girls played very much like a team and continued to develop as individuals and as a team.

On Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the shelter will be holding a supply drive in the parking lot at the Arnprior Pet Valu. Any donations will be appreciated and put to good use.

Landslide victory in the face of family tragedy STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

What should have been a night of celebration by victorious Progressive Conservative candidate John Yakabuski and his family took a tragic turn with the death of his brother-in-law.

In an emotional speech to his supporters at his victory party in Pembroke, the re-elected Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP said his wife’s brother had been killed.

Yakabuski won his third straight election, and second in a row by a huge margin. He received 70.8 per cent of the vote, compared to 62 per cent in the last election in 2007. It was one of the largest margins in the province.

However, his Progressive Conservative party, well ahead in the polls when the campaign started, finished a disappointed second to the Liberals.

The PCs were declared elected in 37 seats, up 12 from the last election, but 16 behind the Liberals, whose total of 53 just missed being a majority by one seat. The NDP upped its seat count from 10 to 17.

With all polls counted, Yakabuski had 27,594 votes, with Liberal John O’Leary a distant second at 6,231 (16 per cent) NDP Brian Dougherty was third with 4,272 votes (11 per cent), followed by the Green’s Kyle Jones with 569 votes (1.5 per cent) and Murray Reid of the Confederation of Regions Party at 309 (0.8 per cent).

Shortly after coming to the stage with his obviously distressed wife, Vicky, Yakabuski explained to supporters at the Best Western Pembroke Inn that the couple had learned at 8 p.m. that her brother, Robert Smith of the Eganville area, had been killed in an accident. Members of Yakabuski’s team said it was not a traffic accident.

“We want everyone to enjoy themselves tonight, but I do have some very, very sad news,” he said. After briefly telling the

crowd of supporters that Vicky’s brother had died, he said, “It makes this night a little difficult in some ways.”

However, he added: “I want you all to celebrate the victory in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. We don’t make these things happen, whether they’re at the right time or the wrong time.”

After breaking the sad news about his brother-in-law, Yakabuski praised those who made the PC victory possible in the riding.

“It is a great victory in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, but it is not one that I achieved alone. It is one that so many people worked so hard (for), and not just in the last 28 days,” he said.

Yakabuski also paid tribute to his father, Paul, who represented the area in the Legislature for 24 years.“I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for my father,” said Yakabuski.

“And certainly, I would have never been elected in the first place ... I try to model myself (after him) and work the way he worked.”

Yakabuski said he was proud of the result and the work put in by his team.

The re-elected MPP spoke to a crowd of five or six dozen people.

Those in the audience included Renfrew resident Glen Campbell, who wasn’t surprised by the victory.

“He does a good job … People in Renfrew think a lot of John.”

Renfrew Reeve Audrey Green, who’s a fervent Conservative Party supporter, responded similarly.

“I think it’s wonderful,” she said of Yakabuski’s one-sided win. “No surprise.”

Susan Fynn, who came out of retirement to serve as Yakabuski’s campaign office manager, was extremely pleased.

Liberal candidate John O’Leary started his campaign in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke in a new pair of shoes.

Five weeks later, he had worn them out, criss-crossing one of Ontario’s largest geographic ridings.

And aside from the miles logged on foot, campaigning door to door with his local Liberal campaign team, he also put 10,000 kilometres on his vehicle.

Although O’Leary finished a distant second in last Thursday’s provincial election, he and party faithful still had plenty to celebrate at Friends Restaurant in Pembroke as news broke that the reigning Liberal party had held onto government.

“It’s a bit of a bittersweet night for us tonight. We didn’t quite get there, here in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, but it looks like, hopefully, we’ll have another strong, stable Liberal government at Queen’s Park for, hopefully, another four years. So we have something to celebrate here tonight,” he said.

O’Leary had plenty of praise for his campaign team, supporters and the residents of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke.

“This was really a campaign that was about you guys, and about the moms and dads and the people that I met, whether I was in Renfrew or Arnprior or Deep River, or Eganville or right throughout the Ottawa Valley,” he told the gathering.

“People said, again and again, they want to make sure they’ve got great great care. They want to make sure they’ve got great schools. They want to make sure that they’ve got some great new jobs and great new opportunities, and I think that our campaign was about trying to build that; trying to build some new opportunities and successes.”

O’Leary called his run for office “a great experience” and applauded his team.

“Thank you all so much for contributing and showing folks here in Renfrew County what being a Liberal is all about.”

O’Leary’s volunteer communications director Melinda McInnes was pleased with the tone of the campaign and its strong corps of dedicated volunteers.

“It’s been great,” McInnes said as the polls drew to a close. “We’ve taken a really positive and pro-active approach to the campaign.”

“I think the people of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke have seen a great worker, a great speaker, a great organizer and a fantastic person,” she said.

Before he settled in to celebrate with family, friends and supporters for the evening, O’Leary reflected on the campaign.

“It was a great experience and I think it was quite a successful campaign,” he told The Renfrew Mercury. “We were talking every day about issues that would strengthen families – great schools and better health care, particularly family doctors, and opportunities for things like green-energy jobs, support for the forest industry and support for farmers.

“And I think that what we’re seeing around Ontario tonight is certainly a resounding sort of vote of confidence for the Liberal party.

“Clearly, we’ve got some more work to do here in Renfrew County, but I think it was a great campaign, certainly successful from my perspective. I would like to have gotten up over the top, but the voters are always right.

“I’m awfully proud of the work that we were able to accomplish here and that Liberals have been able to accomplish right around Ontario.

“I learned a lot just speaking with families and hearing what’s important to them; hearing about their ideas and their aspirations.”

The polls had barely closed and Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke New Democratic Party candidate Brian Dougherty had already committed to being the party’s candidate in the next election.

The Arnprior family man and electrician joined family and friends at Coco Jarry’s in Renfrew to watch the results roll in on election night.

“Thanks to all who came and helped in so many ways. It’s just been fantastic – the phone calls and support I have received,” said Dougherty. “It was my first time and I learned a lot.”

Representing the party was an honour, said Dougherty. “The fact that I’ve always been NDP and now get to represent it is great,” Dougherty told supporters.

He said he is grateful to have been able to draw on the experience of campaign managers Eric Burton and Felicite Stairs as he learned all about campaigning – from media scrums to all-candidates debate to posting signs.

Dougherty was pleased to see the NDP making modest gains across the province and a boost in party support in the riding.

“Well we were in it to win it, but we knew it was a hard race,” he said. “Our goal was to get what Eric Burton did federally and I think we’ve done that,” said Dougherty.

The large geographic size and diverse demographics of the riding made it a challenge in terms of campaigning, said Dougherty.

His message for the incumbent Conservative MPP John Yakabuski?

“There’s a lot of work to be done in this riding,” said Dougherty.

“He (Yakabuski) kept talking about bringing jobs to the riding. Yakabuski better be working hard to get those jobs.”

Forestry and agriculture in particular are industries that are hurting in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke.

Dougherty spoke to both Liberal candidate John O’Leary and incumbent MPP John Yakabuski by telephone.

John, I’ll be after your job again,” Dougherty told Yakabuski.

He praised the MPP, O’Leary and his other fellow candidates for running a strong, clean campaign.

‘Thanks Brian for a race well done’ read a cake presented to Dougherty at the same time his wife, Kimberly, received flowers for “being a single parent during the campaign,” said campaign manager Felicite Stairs, the provincial candidate in 2003 and 2007.

“He was just a joy to work with,” said Stairs, who came in halfway through the campaign to replace Eric Burton, who moved mid-campaign and had to hand over the reins.

Dougherty made such a good candidate because he lives what the NDP is about, she said.

“He’s a lunchbox New Democrat,” she said. “He’s living what we’re talking about. He’s been very exciting to work with.”

Among a number of long-time local NDP supporters was Ish Theilheimer, who was impressed with Dougherty’s success and pleased to see the Conservatives didn’t gain ground.

“Hudak scared the heck out of a lot of Ontarians,” said the long-time RNP NDP supporter, who was pleased to see the Liberals and NDP “nip-and-tuck” in the riding.

Almost a dozen school and community groups came together in a gymnasium last week to lend advice and share support systems with Arnprior parents.

Held at St. Joseph’s School on Oct. 5, the evening culminated in a slideshow presentation by Phoenix Centre executive director Greg Lubimiv. He spoke on the stress endured by today’s parents and offered strategies to connect with more positive ways of coping.

But before the talk, parents were encouraged to visit the various tables, beginning with the sandwiches and treats created by students in professional culinary uniforms from Arnprior District High School’s food and nutrition program.

There was also an invitation to visit a classroom to learn about Smartboard.

Similar to a projector screen, Smartboard links to the Internet, Wordperfect and other tools. Most importantly, it is interactive through touchscreen.

Students use a special marker to produce answers and offer explanations to the class. Teachers say comprehension is way up.

The technology allows teachers to cover much more material than in the past.

It engages students in a way textbooks never could. And it fosters peer-to-peer learning.

They even have a “ladybug” camera that takes a photo of a student’s work and places it on the projector so all can see how it was done.

And there’s a Smartboard in almost every class - thanks to the efforts of the parent council.

It was the parent council that organized the event, back in the gym, thanks to a grant it secured from the provincial government.

The Early Years Centre was on hand, offering brochures and answering questions.

“We were invited and thought it was a good way to advertise for the centre,” said Julie Johnson Burns. “We’re basically

here to bring awareness of our services.”

Don Gougeon was there to share information on the many town youth recreation programs, including field trips to rock climbing, Mont Cascades, the Ottawa Fencing Club, ‘tween dances, cards and crafts, cooking lessons, and many more.

“I like it (the event),” Gougeon said. “It gives everybody a chance to get out and show off their wares.”

Community Policing had information on anti-bullying and bike safety, and more.

Crime Stoppers offered fun “safety books” for children, and reminded parents there is a fingerprint process available.

NeighbourLink offers supervised child play and a clothing exchange along with workshops.

The Arnprior Fire Department asks every family to have a home escape plan.

It would like to see everyone meet on the front yard, should the unthinkable occur.

“We don’t want to start looking around in the backyard. One less step the better,” said firefighter Marc Lalande. “If you have to meet somewhere else, if you can’t meet in the front yard, when you hear us start yelling for help.”

Al-Anon helps children deal with the fact they have an alcoholic parent. It assists them to understand and cope with it, and be a better person for it.

If you say to yourself ‘I can’t handle the stress anymore’, it’s time to contact them. An objective perspective is sometimes all that is needed.

St. Joseph’s student council secured a prominent position in the gym. The students there said when they make a reasonable suggestion to parents and staff, it is acted on because the adults realize the student council speaks on behalf of many, many others.

It was the first time the school held a parent information night.

BRACELETS FOR ALLISON Two students from McNab Public School, Hannah McMullin and Emily Croft, decided to raise money for the cancer ward at CHEO in memory of their dear friend, Allison Hapgood, who passed away in July. In order to make a donation to CHEO, the girls made and sold bracelets to students and staff at McNab School. Allison loved bright colours and bracelets, and this was the inspiration for Hannah and Emily to take on the project.

The OPP Forensic Identification Unit is assisting Constable Sarah Turcotte in the investigation.

The other break-in occurred on Mutual Avenue on the outskirts of Renfrew.

OPP report a Stihl 18-inch chainsaw was stolen from a field on Campbell Drive

in McNab-Braeside on Oct. 6 at noon.

The owner observed a dark four-door car stop beside the road. A man then walked into the field and stole the chainsaw.

The County of Renfrew is saving more than $200,000 on its next annual insurance protection package.

The county is not renewing its agreement with OMEX, whose 2011 insurance package cost $784,773. OMEX offered a new package for 2012 of $691,910, but that was still considerably lower than the bids of three other companies.

The lowest bid, which was approved during the Sept. 28 session of county council, was $469,063 (plus taxes). That price was offered by

Jardine Lloyd Thomson Canada, in partnership with Municipal Insurance Services.

Jardine’s bid was nearly $30,000 less than the next lowest bid, by BFLCanada. Another bid,

by Cowan, was also considerably lower than OMEX’s.

It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing of Joanne on Sunday October 9, 2011 in her 48th year after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was a devoted wife and soul mate to her best friend Dean and a loving, proud mother to her baby doll, Hannah. She was the beloved daughter of Patricia (Ron Carty) and the late Edward Melcher. Dear sister of Tony (Cheryl) Melcher, Kelly (Mike)Courchesne and Natalie (Lance) Lalonde. Cherished and loved daughter-in-law of Gerry, Molly and sister in law of Fern. She was loved by and so proud of her many nieces and nephews. She is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and a grandmother, Masie. She will be forever remembered by her many friends, peers and colleagues at Metro where she worked for over 31 years. It would be safe to say that Joanne made a positive impact on everyone she knew. Her love for children, family and friendship will never be forgotten.

Joanne’s generosity and outgoing personality are cemented in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be fondly remembered for her passion for food and attention to detail.

August 6, 1927—October 10, 2011 Veteran WW 11 and Korean War Resident of the Perley Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre, he passed away peacefully at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital on Monday October 10, 2011 in his 85th year. Born and raised in Arnprior, David enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 and served with the Algonquin Regiment in France, Holland and Germany. Demobilized at the end of the war, he enlisted again in 1950 and served in Korea. He is survived by his children Darlene Smith (David), Allan McLaren (Cheryl) and Alexander McLaren, all of Ottawa, step daughters Jennifer Morris (Bryon) of Petawawa and Jeannette Ballantyne-Sliwowski (Stan) of Pembroke, grandchildren Jenna Morris, Kasia Maves, Terry Morris and Alexandra McLaren, two great grandchildren, Liila-Leigh Morris and Liam Gale, brothers Gus (Norma), Courtland (Pat) and sisters Bea (Bill), Jean (late Art) and Arlene (late Al). Predeceased by parents Alexander and Bythea McLaren, his wife Rose McLaren, brothers Malcolm, Kenny, Jack, Allan, sister Iva and step son Douglas Ballantyne. Preparations are underway for a Christmas event that will combine the joy of the season with a helping hand for those in need.

On Saturday, Nov. 26, 98.7 FM Valley Heritage Radio will present ‘The Holly Jolly Radio-thon’. It will be an all-day party with live music, dancing and fun while also opening hearts to the needs of

so many.

Pledges from all over the Valley will be accepted to go equally to three important organizations representing the old and young and everyone in-between.

All proceeds go to the Bonnechere Manor Foundation in Renfrew, Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) and to Renfrew County United Way, whose arms open to

those in need on both the Ontario and Quebec sides of the Ottawa River.

The public is invited to get involved in the Holly Jolly Radio-thon. Musicians can become part of the live radio show and groups can organize to support the cause.

Hey Youth! It’s time to dance, dance, and dance the night away at another one of our upcoming ‘tween dances. This time the theme is Pajama Party. Wear your comfiest pyjamas, slippers, and robes and dance the night away pajama style.

The dance is Nov. 11 and runs from 7 to 10 p.m. for grades 4-8 students. Tickets are $5 in advance and can be picked up at the Nick Smith Centre the Thursday before the dance. Tickets are sold for $10 at the door with limited door sales.

We are also looking for parent volunteers to help chaperone the dance. It’s a great way to help out.

This is just a reminder that all of our dances are adult supervised and zero tolerance. Jesse’s DJ will be playing the music.

This is just a reminder that our Spikes Volleyball program starts Thursdays beginning Oct. 20 to Dec. 22 (10 weeks) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is $80, which includes a t-shirt. This program is for boys and girls in Grades 4-6.

Join us and Spikes volleyball to learn volleyball skills. It brings a new approach to the sport to guarantee skill development and fun for all skill levels.

Come out Oct. 24 to join in the Halloween spirit of pumpkin carving. Carve as a family, friends, or individual to win some prizes. Courtesy of Scott MacLaren.

Carving runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and is $5 per pumpkin. Carving will take place at the Nick Smith Centre.
