GOOD CLEAN FUN

Arnprior Co-operators and the Kids Help Phone hosted a visit by Crash Test Dummies drummer Mitch Dorge to ADHS last week to talk about having fun and avoiding pitfalls that could lead to despair and suicide. 10

Arnprior council approved a development despite a roomful of residents voicing opposition at Tuesday’s meeting. Mayor David Reid said the land in front of the Grove Nursing Home and extending to Division Street has been slated for moderate development for many years. The proposal made it through various studies, official plans and a public meeting with little opposition, he noted, adding he agrees it should be approved for greater density. He expects the nursing home’s expansion plans will be respected, and additional infrastructure costs such as larger water pipes will be born by the developer. See ‘GROVE’ Page 3

FEASTING ON GRIDIRON FOES The Arnprior District High School Redmen visited Renfrew Sunday and came away with two Turkey Bowl victories. The Seniors won 32-0 and the Juniors edged the RCI Raiders 17-13. For more on the games and other ADHS exploits, see pages 16, 17 and 19.

Yakabuski’s majority tops in province SHERRY HAAIMA Sherry.haaima@metroland.com

John Yakabuski of the Progressive Conservatives swept to victory in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, but it was not to be for his party province-wide when Ontarians took to the polls Oct. 6. In a provincial election with the lowest voter turnout in history with only 49.02 per cent of potential voters marking a ballot, the Liberals fell one seat short of a majority government with 53 seats.

Yakabuski, the Singing MPP, was reelected to a third term with what appears to be the biggest margin across Ontario – snaring an impressive 70.8 per cent of the vote. When the final results were tallied, Yakabuski had 27,594 votes. Liberal John O’Leary earned 16% of the vote, NDP Brian Dougherty 11%, Green Party Kyle Jones 1.5% and Confederation of Regions Murray Reid 0.8 per cent. See ‘MPP’S VICTORY’ Page 2

Chow down for good cause It’s harvest time in Eastern Ontario and several area groups are providing opportunities for the public to share in the season’s bounty. The popular Arnprior and District Breast Cancer Support Group’s 14th annual roast beef and turkey buffet dinner is set for this Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall. Admission is by goodwill donation. For more, see the flyer in this week’s Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. For more on this and other suppers, such as Sunday’s St. John Chrysostom Church Harvest Festival and Emmanuel Anglican Church’s 150th anniversary celebration, see community calendar on Page 42.
