Drain pain Development concerns pool at meeting DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

BODING WELL Bode’s Custom Cabinets is celebrating a provincial funding announcement that will help streamline operations and create jobs. 4

Nearby residents are worried ongoing drainage problems will increase if a development is approved on Vanjumar and Russett drives. Almost 20 people crammed Arnprior council chambers for Monday’s meeting. They heard of Pegasus’ plan for 119 single family lots, 153 multiple attached lots, an apartment block, parkland, stormwater management ponds and internal roads. The roads will connect to Vanjumar and Russett drives. The project was put on hold for two years, but the same plan is now coming forward for the municipality and county governments to consider. Andrew and Cecilia Carroll of Campbell Drive have sent letters since mid-2009 asking for the town to correct drainage problems they’ve experienced. The couple says after infill was dumped on the property, water starting pooling on their lot, causing a range of problems. It hasn’t been fixed. See ‘NOISE COMPLAINTS’ Page 6

Warden begins unprecedented fifth term STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

CHAMBER AGM The Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce hosted its Christmas social and annual general meeting last week. 5

Bob Sweet entered an unprecedented fifth term as Renfrew County warden during county council’s inaugural session Tuesday morning (see feature on Page 3). Within the hour, the Petawawa mayor was nominated by Greater Madawaska Mayor Peter Emon, sworn in as warden, and applauded by special guests in the

ceremony attended by 70 people, including county councillors, media and members of the public. Guests offering formal greetings were MPP John Yakabuski, Pembroke Mayor Ed Jacyno, and Canadian Forces Base commander Lt.-Col. Chris Moyle. MP Cheryl Gallant did not attend. But first Sweet spoke.

An Arnprior man was one of 19 seniors honoured at the Ontario Senior Achievement Awards Wednesday at Queen’s Park. It’s not the first award for Irvin Woermke, described as a tireless advocate for quality, affordable housing in Arnprior.

STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Bob Sweet spent the first 21 years of his life in Scotland where he was born in Renfrewshire, just south of Glasgow. He has spent the last 23 years in Renfrew County politics and is looking forward to a few more years in the heart of the political yarn. “It’s a great privilege and an honour. And it’s not lost on me … that no one else has been down that road before,” says Sweet shortly before beginning an unprecedented fifth term as county warden. The inaugural session for 201112 took place Tuesday morning. Sweet served three terms, from 2003-2006, then returned last year for a fourth term, during which time he chaired the organizing committee for the hugely successful Expo 150. He’s extremely proud of how the county’s 150th-anniversary celebrations turned out. The 68year-old is also pleased to return, by acclamation, for another term as warden. “I was encouraged by members of county council who were pleased by the work that has been done and by the leadership shown by the team,” says the Petawawa mayor. “My style is very much a team approach. I’m not the boss, so to speak. We’re a team and we’re here to get certain things done,

County’s Expo 150 party lauded

as best we can.” He joined municipal politics when he was elected as a former Village of Petawawa councillor in 1988, and he’s been the Town of Petawawa’s mayor since 2000. Based on the observations of county staff and councillors, Sweet is well respected. Colleagues call him articulate, intense, forward-thinking, at times humorous and self-deprecating, insightful, approachable, and unabashedly critical of some provincial ministry decisions. Some say he waves a Liberal flag, but don’t tell him that. But he certainly hasn’t waved support for Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant’s resistance to the Canadian heritage river designation of the Ottawa River. Sweet has literally shaken his head wondering what all the fuss is about, when the designation was earmarked as a pro-tourism move for all municipalities along the river. “I don’t have an orange hat, I don’t have a blue hat, I don’t have a red hat, I have a Bob Sweet hat for the County of Renfrew,” says Sweet. “I’m sorry if that upsets some people. It’s not intentional. I’ve supported Stephen Harper’s initiatives in some areas, and I’ve supported Dalton McGuinty and Tim Hudak. Hudak, for example, wants to do something about apprentices; McGuinty doesn’t see that as viable; but to me (Hudak’s approach) makes sense.

Continued from front “We have accomplished much in 2011 and hopefully set the stage for success in 2012,” said Sweet, who spearheaded the county’s successful 150th-anniversary celebrations. “Expo 150 is an event we can be most proud of,” he said. “Expo 150 showcased the past, the present and the future of the County of Ren-

Greater Madawaska Mayor Peter Emon presents Warden Bob Sweet with a gavel upon entering his next term as Renfrew County warden. “We’re suffering from the lack of skilled trades and if we don’t do something in five years … Does that make me a Conservative? No. It doesn’t make me anti-Liberal either. It just means I support that particular initiative.” Sweet sees himself as a consensus-builder whose voice has been heard even more since he sat on Ontario’s provincial-municipal fiscal review panel a few years ago. As a result, the province created several benefits, including the uploading back to the province of several social services. Sweet also believes he brings a consensus-building attitude to politics. “I’m not the thump-the-desk

frew, as well as all the good and uniqueness about our home.” Next year’s projects revolve around removal of the Canadian Pacific railway, as the county works with CP to acquire the rail bed for future use, and lobbying for the twinning of Highway 417 “all the way up the Ottawa Valley” from Arnprior. The warden said he also

type of deal,” he explains. “I let everybody have their say. I’m not dogmatic. I think, if it comes down to the point where a decision has to be made, I can make that decision. I don’t hold a grudge. I don’t come in here and spit bullets and kick and bang the wall. Life’s too short for that.” He believes he also brings to the job a perspective that was developed in his native Scotland. Growing up after the Second World War, he says, “There wasn’t a lot of money. There wasn’t a lot of food. One of the things that was instilled upon us as kids was the value of money and the value of not being in debt. “That’s not easy in this day and age, but I think I’ve tried to bring

looks forward to working with MPP John Yakabuski to bring provincial gas tax revenue to all Ontario municipalities. He also thanked MP Gallant for the federal government’s sustainable gas tax money and investment of $30 million in the Eastern Ontario Development Fund. Yakabuski, who also sang the national anthem, returned to the microphone

that forward … if you’re not planning to know what’s ahead of you, then shame on you.” He says he’s not much in fudging the truth, either. “If you ask me, if I can answer it, I will. If I can’t, I’ll say I can’t,” says Sweet, whose dad (Walter, who later came to Canada) expected nothing but the truth. “He could forgive you for all kinds of mistakes, and God knows we made lots of them, but don’t tell him something that wasn’t true because you would hear the wrath of God. That sort of stayed with me. I think I have two very honest kids.” Meanwhile, Sweet says the warden’s plate has many challenges, not the least of which are needed Highway 417 expansion, the state of the local forestry industry and the loss of the Canadian Pacific railway line. Whatever the challenges, Sweet says the county should consider creating a longer term for the elected warden, whoever he or she is. “I think it’s time perhaps to look and see if the warden should be voted in for a little bit longer (than one year per term),” he explains. “I think that debate has to take place. Years ago the position of warden was not as complex as it is today.” Whatever happens in that regard, Sweet says, “I’m looking forward to next year and seeing what we can do to enhance the County of Renfrew.”

with greetings. In jest, he said Sweet, in entering his fifth term as warden, had practically memorized the oath of office. On a serious note, he said he’ll continue to work for the extension of Hwy. 417 because “it is vital to the economic well-being of this county. Regardless of what the circumstances are, there’s no reason for that project not to

be continuing.” “On a personal note, you have been a tremendous advocate for Renfrew County,” said Yakabuski. “I’ve always taken your role seriously and you have always advocated for what you believed to be the important issues for the county, even if it puts you at odds with your provincial member of Parliament.”

Funding announcement bodes well for cabinet company SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

A local company has received an early Christmas present from the provincial government. The province announced this week that Bode’s Custom Cabinets Ltd., a Jackson Lane business that moved from Carleton Place to Arnprior in September, will receive a grant of $87,250 in support of plans that will enhance the estimating and design process, streamline manufacturing operations and reduce waste and lower production costs. The total value of the project, including Bode’s own investment, is $872,500 and it is hoped the expansion will not only protect the 20-something existing positions but also create 10 new jobs. “Our transition to computer aided design and manufacturing presents exciting possibilities for our customers in terms of project flexibility and lead times. However, the foundation of Bode’s Custom Cabinets won’t change – and that’s a team of skilled craftspeople delivering meticulous attention to detail, on time and on budget,” said Mike

Bode, company president. Established in 1989 with Mike Bode and one worker, Bode’s projects range from a single office refit to fitting out a complete hospital, school or office complex. Bode’s designs, manufactures and installs architectural millwork and fine cabinetry used in commercial, industrial and public buildings. The company is very excited about the funding announcement, says Bode. The business’ motto is ‘millwork made meticulously’ and it focuses on high-end cabinet and millwork. Bode’s has landed a number of high-profile projects, including one underway at the Mint, said Bode. Bode’s moved to its Jackson Lane location from Carleton Place in September. The building, which formerly housed Terray, and its location were ideal for the company’s expansion plans, says Bode. With 50 per cent of employees living in Arnprior and Renfrew, the move was a welcome one. The offices and shop are still being set up. Part of the expansion involves the purchase of a CNC machine that

The workshop on Jackson Lane in Arnprior is still being outfitted and renovated. The company expects to hold a grand opening in the new year. will help make the operations more efficient. Bode expects a grand opening will be held in the new year. The five acres of land and almost 200,000 square foot allow lots of room for future expansions, says Bode. Bode’s is in Arnprior to stay and the company looks forward to being a part of the community. “We’re anticipating a

very bright future,” said Bode. Fostering growth of local businesses is part of the McGuinty government’s plan to create and support new and existing jobs for Ontario families and to strengthen local economies, said a press release announcing the funding. “Technology and innovation are central to Ontario’s long-term ability to compete in the global economy. We see a strategic role for government in working with industry to continually upgrade technology and stay ahead. In fact, our longterm prosperity depends on it,” said Brad Duguid, Minister of Economic Development and Innovation. Ontario is providing a strong and stable environment for businesses to grow and create good jobs for families in the face of global economic uncertainty, says the province. These new jobs build upon the 124,800 net new full time jobs that have already been created in Ontario so far this year alone, says the release.

Noise complaints anticipated

Continued from front Brian and Patsy Boudreau of Wabalac Drive penned a letter saying traffic levels have increased with the closure of Division Street at Highway 417. Commercial development such as the Antrim Truck Stop have also upped traffic. They anticipate even more should the development go through. “The increased use of White Lake Road and Vanjumar has already has a substantial impact on our quality of life,” Patsy Boudreau wrote. “We no longer have reasonable enjoyment of our side and back yards as a result of the noise of traffic in the area. “This problem will only get worse with the addition of close to 300 homes down

the street.” Noise was also brought up at the meeting, albeit not from residents complaining it is too high. A bus company owner is concerned that any new homeowners might complain in the future, should the project be approved. “We just don’t want any problems for our business,” Mark Allen said. “We have some concerns about this development.” Pegasus planning consultant Bill Buchanan tried to allay fears, saying drainage issues will be solved when digging starts, and noise fencing has already been approved by the county. With the public meeting and zoning change done, the issue is back at the county for consideration.

Health unit issues warning over water testing company The Renfrew County and District Health Unit has issued a water testing alert. In a press release Wednesday, the health unit says it has been made aware of a drinking water testing company that is contacting homeowners within its jurisdiction. “The company is calling individual home owners advising that they would like to attend their home in order to conduct a drinking water test. We also understand that the company is advising that they can provide immediate sample results,” says the health unit. “This company is not associated with the Renfrew County and District Health Unit.” Reports from across the province indicate that the intended purpose of the home visit and water testing is to sell the consumer expensive water filtration equipment that may not be necessary, warns the Health Unit.

The Health Unit is advising people that this type of water testing does not determine if harmful pathogenic bacteria are present in their water supply. Broad statements such as ‘removes contaminants’ or ‘provides pure water’ without certified test data to support their performance claims should be a warning sign. The Health Unit recommends that people test their private water supply from wells a minimum of three times per year, during the spring runoff, in mid-summer and late fall. It also recommends that should people notice a change in either the colour or odour of their water supply that they collect a sample. Sample bottles can be obtained at the Health Unit offices as well as municipal offices throughout Renfrew County. There is no user fee for the service. The land is vacant, but developer David Simpson wants to build 46 single detached homes, 15 to 18 multiple attached homes and a 15- to 20-unit apartment complex, along with an internal road system, parkland, and a stormwater management pond. It is similar to a plan put forward in 2007. Mayor David Reid opposed forcing the developer to do an ecological assessment study and a traffic study. Planner Robin Smith said the Ministry of Natural Resources must have reason to believe there are rare plant species or something similar on the site. The public meeting is set for Jan. 9, in council chambers at Town Hall. NICK SMITH SAVINGS The energy savings retrofit at Nick Smith Centre is starting to pay off. The first annual Energy Savings Report from Ainsworth, the company responsible for work done at the activity centre meant to reduce energy consumption, shows bigger savings than expected. Ainsworth guaranteed the town would save $80,000 per year in energy costs. Turns out it saved an additional $1,760. Council learned the news when staff asked that the annual $3,500 cost of the report be paid for year two, as well. Coun-

cil learned that along with showing the savings, Ainsworth recommends further upgrades and adjustments as part of the report. Council agreed that since the project is fairly large, having the company monitor it for two out of five years would be a good idea. Ainsworth has done similar projects throughout Ontario. It says the town’s roughly $432,000 investment will be recuperated by energy savings by mid 2013. ACCOUNTING FOR WEAR The province has forced municipalities to account for wear and tear or “amortization” of its physical assets during budget season. Then towns such as Arnprior can contribute to a reserve fund in order to be prepared when buildings such as water treatment plants break down. Arnprior treasurer and acting chief administrative officer David Pollard began the new financial process back in 2004. The new system simply fits over the top of what exists now. A skeptical Coun. Ted Strike asked if the provincial government will actually examine the numbers from every municipality in Ontario. “It just seems like the Province of Ontario has just created another industry,” Strike said. Pollard didn’t speculate on which department will check the numbers. “I imagine we’ll get some sort of report back,” he said. Reeve Walter Stack said the numbers are based on “historic” calculations, meaning the process doesn’t account for inflation.

ADDRESSING BROWNFIELDS Former commercial properties, called brownfields, such as this one-time gas station on Daniel Street in Arnprior, could lose their eyesore status if the town’s Community Improvement and Tourism Committee has its way. Many brownfields are contaminated and require a lot of money to clean up and prepare for selling. Owners tend to opt to pay the property tax instead. However, the town is looking to the province to divert the taxes for 10 to 20 years or so if the owner uses the money for clean-up. That, or the town could purchase the land, raze the building, lay grass sods, and fence it in. The town’s lawyer is looking into options for the Don Thoms’ gas station, which has been in its current state for a while.

Applause for courageous Braeside group of nine

It’s not about the money To the Editor: It’s not about the money. I have spoken to several of the members who won their trespass suit against Miller Company - some are members of my family, and some neighbors. We hope to make it clear that entering this suit was first and foremost about principle. The principle that people should be able to enjoy their homes without risk to their personal safety. When you go to Small Claims Court, you must ask for a monetary settlement. But we feel we have drawn to the attention of the Braeside community (and yes, Arnprior too) the facts of the matter that toxic fumes can affect many, many people. And that noise, in itself, is a type of pollution. My family is grateful for the help we received from a non-profit agency called EcoJustice and hope to be able to show them our gratitude in a monetary way. Again, it was never about the money.

T

he picture most of us have of people standing up against a corporation bent on violating their rights is that of idealistic university students naive about the necessity for compromise. They court media attention to rally others to their cause. They use the power of law to their advantage. When wrong they earn the ire of the general population; when right they secure a win that benefits all, with the appreciation of a few. That wasn’t the picture playing out locally over the last few years. When a group of Braeside residents living near the quarry used by Miller Group decided to sue, they weren’t signing membership cards to the loony left. They weren’t crazy about being seen as NIMBY’s, or as trying to kill local jobs. Nor about the media attention it would gather. They didn’t want to cause a fuss. But their basic democratic right to live free of adverse effects by any neighbour - including a corporation - deserved to be defended. It was that or live with a greatly diminished quality of life. What message would that send to children? In Canada, the law as it stands now says people cannot be damaged, though the law will continue to erode in favour of the powerful if average citizens don’t take a stand from time to time. Not only did the Braeside residents have a right to fight for themselves, they almost had a duty to follow in the footsteps of those courageous few who suffered – over many decades - to enshrine basic human rights. And for that the Braeside group should be applauded. Unfortunately, our Dec. 8 story ‘Slam dunk’ has sparked backlash in some parts of the community. Most readers would rightly ask themselves how much was paid out, and to whom. It is in public documents related to a public court case. And it is our duty, as a newspaper, to answer such fundamental questions. So, the story included how much money each will receive if Miller Group loses its appeal. However, some small-minded readers took the story to mean the group was in it for the money. Solely. We took the time to state the obvious, which was that the group “considered it a moral victory.” We listed the meager amounts to show how little they got. Indeed, most likely lost money along with health. The odds were against the Braeside group. They didn’t have the money to hire lawyers and experts to counter those Miller lined up. Without the pro bono help of EcoJustice, the case would never have made it to court. We have now learned any winnings will likely go toward related costs. They were, again, in it for the moral victory. Bottom line? They ignored those who resented their courage and independence. They bit the financial loses and absorbed the arrows of public shame. All for doing what`s right. The empathetic among us applaud you.

OPP values community partnership with legion To the Editor: I would like to provide clarity to misleading information that was published in the Arnprior Chronicle Guide newspaper Dec. 1 entitled ‘Community Policing ends partnership with Legion’ stemming from a media release issued by the Arnprior detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police on Nov. 18. The OPP is committed to delivering services that meet the needs of communities and in fulfilling our mandate of public safety and security. Partnerships with the community are essential to delivering police services and The Royal Canadian Legion

is an important and respected partner with the OPP in communities across Ontario including Arnprior. Members of the Arnprior OPP detachment responded to a 911 call on July 30, 2011 at a private function being held at the Royal Canadian Legion located in the Town of Arnprior and, as a result of an investigation, laid a number of charges under the Liquor Licence Act for offences that impacted public safety. As we routinely do, the OPP distributed a media release as part of our commitment to transparency and accountability and also to educate the public. This incident has not, and will not,

impact the positive relationships we enjoy with the community, including the Royal Canadian Legion. The OPP recognizes that strong community partnerships are essential to fulfilling our shared vision of communities that are safe places to live, work and raise our families. I would be pleased to speak with any member of the public who has any concerns with respect to this matter or any other that may affect the safety of those within our community. Miller Group court case was about principle, not money To the Editor: I, for one, was quite disappointed in the Chronicle-Guide coverage of the Braeside residents’ win in the court case against the multi-national Miller Group. The article missed the point. Following this paper’s coverage of last August’s trial. as I have, one would know that this is a significant news item. We had a real, honest-togoodness David and Goliath story here with ordinary people saying,

Established in 1879

‘Enough already! We want our lives back the way they were before you put this temporary asphalt plant in the Braeside Quarry!’ The fact is they won. As your paper reported, a slam dunk. This story should not have been about money! The story here is that the little guy can win, verdicts are just. The focus should not have been on who was awarded what? Anyone knows that nine people

Because Miller has appealed the judge’s decision, who knows when these people will ever see any money or hope to pay back the huge moral debt to the

Burnstown Christmas fundraiser a success To the Editor: The Christmas Spirit was alive and well in Burnstown this past weekend. Thanks to the generosity of those who took the time to drop in to Nancy and Ted’s open house to buy some delicious baked goods, evergreens and tour the decorated home, enough money was raised to supply the Hosanna orphanage in Kenya with running water. Currently the children draw water from a well away from the orphanage (for close to 100 people) before they walk to school in the very early hours of the morning. Having their own water supply will make a huge difference in their daily lives, their health and, even their safety. Closer to home, the Salvation Army will also receive some funds for local use. There are many people to thank- family & friends (couldn’t have done it without you), village businesses (for helping to spread the word ), obviously those who contributed by donating, and let’s not forget the continuing

generosity and thoughtfulness of our local newspapers who repeatedly publish community activities at no cost. If people couldn’t read the paper to find out about events such as this, there would very few who would attend, and, therefore, not much money would be raised. Thank you guys and gals at the Chronicle, Mercury, EMC and the Humm for your continued support. You all deserve a very Merry Christmas and a big pat on the back. FYI – for those who may have wanted to attend but were unable to, donations can still be made by dropping in to the Bittersweet Gallery, Burnstown, or going online to www.heartsforchange.ca. Thank you from Jenny, Dion and the Hosanna children and all of us in Burnstown. Have a fabulous holiday season. Take time to appreciate your family and friends and remember: “Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something!” – author unknown Nancy Young Burnstown

BURNSTOWN TO KENYA WITH LOVE Thanks to the generosity of people taking in the Burnstown Christmas open house on the weekend, almost $1,000 was raised for the Salvation Army and the Hearts for Change effort to fund an orphanage in Kenya. About $930 will provide running water for the orphanage and $30 a month will sponsor an orphan. The Burnstown fundraiser was centred at the Young home, formerly known as Beyond the Bullrushes. Shown on Saturday surrounded by the display detailing the orphanage project are, from left, Ted Young, Ryan Young, Nancy Young and Kristen Hutchinson with some of the Christmas items for sale to raise money for the campaign. “We had a lot of nice people come through,” said Nancy Young. “They were very generous.” The Youngs note Hearts for Change donations can still be made at the Bittersweet Gallery in Burnstown or by going online at www.heartsforchange.ca.

Many snowsuits needed for needy children Operation Snowsuit has already 237 children and youth registered and more are expected once the snow flies, The Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) is urging people to check their closets for gently used snowsuits (or snow jackets and snow pants) that are clean and in good repair and donate them at their school. The campaign is particularly short of winter wear for ages 6 and up, as well as boots. The seventh annual Operation Snowsuit campaign also accepts cash donations so it can buy snow garb for those not covered by snowsuit contributions. Schools in Renfrew County have been asked to collect the snowsuit donations and Bell repair technicians will deliver them to sorting areas. All donations are carefully sorted and hung in sizes by teams of dedicated and hard-working volunteers. Requests are taken over the telephone

at CPAN. When a match is made the snowsuit is shipped to partner agencies throughout Renfrew County so families can pick them up locally. CPAN assists children of all ages, newborn up to and including youth 18 years of age, so is in need of all sizes including adult small to extra large. CPAN includes hats and gloves with all orders and is always appreciative of waterproof gloves in all sizes. “Our requests are growing, but so is the quality and quantity of donations, more schools are coming on board every year, and volunteers are becoming regulars, said CPAN co-ordinator Lyn Smith. “On behalf of CPAN I would like to thank each and every one that has helped the program grow and improve year on year. If you or someone you know needs assistance, call CPAN at 613-735-2374, ext. 250.

The Carp Fish and Hunt Club celebrated another successful year in November. Looking back to 1948, the members, in back from left, were Leslie Armstrong (from Carp, agricultural feed business owner), Arthur Armstrong (Carp school student), Ernie Johnston (Carp veterinarian), Herb Johnston (Carp cattle drover), Winston McGee (Huntley Centre dairy farmer), Christie Johnston (barber, Kinburn insurance salesman), Ira Cavanagh (Carp dairy and silver fox farmer), Alvin Cavanagh (Carp dentist); and in front Willard Crabb (guest from Washington, D.C., son-in-law of Ira Cavanagh), Everett Armstrong (Carp agricultural feed business owner), Gordon Mulligan (Huntley Centre, plumber, chicken farmer and “jack of all trades”), Jack Anderson (Antrim general store owner) and 16-year-old Don Johnston (Antrim school student).

Carp Fish and Hunt Club to celebrate 65th anniversary DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

In a world where change is constant; where organizations and friends come and go; it’s good to know that at least one thing hasn’t changed. The Carp Fish and Hunt Club has stuck together since the early 1940s, and intends to celebrate its 65th annual week-long getaway in 2012. The group of Carp and Kinburn area men used to take the train to Barry’s Bay where the camp is located. They’ve seen many changes since those days. Many of the original members are gone. Even the landscape itself has shifted from brush and pasture with cattle drives to privately-owned lands with many more trees, homes and paved roads. But they’ve seen progress, too. From converting a former schoolhouse just west of Barry’s Bay, outside Algonquin Park, to welcoming new “guest” members. In the end, though, it’s been about buddies getting together for fall fun. “You go every year for the

hunting and visiting,” said Don Johnston, who has lived in Arnprior since 1952. “But it’s really about the camaraderie, that’s what it’s all about.” The founding members feature long-time West Carleton family names: Ira Cavanagh, Everett Armstrong, Chris Johnston, Herb Johnston, Gordon Mulligan, Ernie Johnston, Winston McGee, Alvin Cavanagh, Leslie Armstrong and Jack Anderson. After the first camp, the abandoned Bark Lake Schoolhouse on Skeeds Road and Highway 60, the group moved to the cottage at Bleskie’s Saw Mill. They had six steel bunks and mattresses (the least expensive ones that could be found) as luxury items. But that mattered little, since they were out hunting and fishing most days from sun up to sundown. Johnston says the hunting has changed much over the years: more private property means fewer places to go; moose and deer are still around, but partridge are scarce; ducks – not so much; lots of bear but a special licence is needed; lots of wolves too, which means few coyotes. Then the members built the

current camp in 1950 on Parissien (Deer) Lake, about 15 kilometres this side of the famous Algonquin Park. Johnston still recalls the day the club lugged building supplies in an old half-ton from A.J. Campbell Lumber in Arnprior. Things didn’t happen quickly then, but the men worked hard and ‘got ’er done’ as they say in the Valley. Life did soften for them. In 1960, the hydro line was built and modernization set in. A bathroom and shower was added in 1972. Johnston is the last member still going to the club. The only other still alive from the early years is Arthur Armstrong, who until failing health prevented him from doing so – last visited the camp two years ago. New members include Marshall Riggs, Merritt McGee, Arthur Armstrong, Don Johnston (who as a teenager was there in the beginning, but not as a member), Keith Barr, James Grant and Ralph Paul. Wilbert Paul, a recent past president of the Carp Agriculture Society, was a guest member again this year. He considers himself fortunate to be part of

Mount Pakenham opens for season SUBMITTED Despite the lack of snow generally in the area, Mount Pakenham was able to open for another skiing season Saturday, Dec. 10 for two days. The snowmaking crew and

groomers had the hill ready for weekend skiing. After closing this week, the Mount Pakenham ski hill will reopen this Friday, Dec. 16 at 9 a.m. Night skiing begins Friday, with the hill open to 10 p.m. However, tubing and cross-

country ski areas are not yet open. Beginning Friday, the hill will be open daily except for Christmas Day. Mt. Pakenham reports its snow base has been machinegroomed and is about 40 to 60 centimetres deep.

the week-long adventure. “It’s great to be part of a hunting club that’s been around that long,” Paul said. “Just to listen to the stories that go around the camp. There’s a lot of history with these old guys.” Many others have felt just as fortunate, as an excerpt from a history of the club reveals: “Initially, the focus of the club was for members to hunt and fish.

The hospitality and beauty of the area soon attracted the members’ families to spend vacation and leisure time at the camp and the camp is now being used all year long. “Countless invited guests have hunted, fished and vacationed with members of The Carp Fish and Hunt Club. Over the past 60 years the atmosphere has never changed. Relax and enjoy!”

Love honoured for raising profile of victims’ issues STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Renfrew resident Susan Love has received the Ontario Network of Victim Service Providers Award. During an Oct. 26 ceremony at the Ontario Provincial Police headquarters in Orillia, she was honoured for raising the profile of victims’ issues. The award also coincided with the annual general meeting of the Ontario Network of Victim Service Providers. Love is the mother of former Arnprior resident Phillip Love, who was murdered in Dartmouth, N.S., in 2007. Since that time, Susan Love has actively worked to promote organ donations. Several of her son’s organs went to other patients in desperate need of organ transplants.

ca features more than 50 recommended readings and Canadian parents’ stories of their murdered children. CPOMC’s website also includes an online forum of sharing, caring and hope geared to different kinds of survivors of murdered family members.

Partnership to give A.J. a new play structure

Campaign gains steam SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

News that the town will support the campaign to build a new play structure at A.J. Charbonneau Public School was applauded by the playground committee and school principal. “We’re pleased to be partnering with the town,” said principal Angie McGrath. The plans include a larger play structure and a paved area for an outdoor rink/basketball court. Total cost of the project is $84,700 and parent council fundraising efforts have raised $26,500 of the $60,000 goal. Lori Ann Cherney, chair of the playground planning committee, says there has been excellent support for the campaign since it began in September. Kyle Felhaver, Becky Reid and their school’s students kindly offered to perform for a Dec. 8 concert that raised funds.

About $1,600 was added to the pot from the concert, said Cherney. Three $5,000 donations have also helped boost the total. An anonymous in memoriam donation and gifts from Jim’s Auto and Leaps and Bounds Children’s Centre are greatly appreciated, said Cherney. The committee will undertake a Helping Hands campaign where paper hands will be sold and donors names displayed on them on the front school wall. Ongoing is the We Can Do It campaign, where people can drop off pop cans at the school. The annual breakfast, held Mother’s Day weekend, will benefit the campaign. A Bessie’s Bulb fundraising campaign will also be undertaken in support of the playground. Letters to potential sponsors will be going out soon. Various levels of sponsorships are available.

A school, the town, and a developer are helping one another through mutual self-interest. The A.J. Charbonneau Public School’s play structure is too small. The parent council has raised $26,500 to build a larger one, along with a paved area for an outdoor rink/basketball court. But the total cost is $84,700. Meanwhile, the town is entitled to 5 per cent of lands set aside for development. That or cash in lieu, which amounts to $80,000. They’ve opted for cash from Campanale Homes, developers of the Callahan Subdivision behind the school. Parks and recreation director Glenn Arthur said rather than “doubling up” by having a public park near a school park, the councillors at the Dec. 12 meeting should agree to partner with the school to build one. Arthur’s only prerequisites are that it be fully accessible to those with disabilities, and that it be available to the general pub-

lic when school hours are out. “It’s a win-win situation,” Arthur said, reminding council that the same was done for Walter Zadow Public School 15 years ago, and John XXIII about five years ago. Coun. Ted Strike was told inspections will be done by town staff. “It’s a great idea combining forces and creating something worthwhile,” Strike said. Reeve Walter Stack agreed the idea is a good one, then added a suggestion when he was told the school board isn’t contributing any dollars. “I don’t think it would hurt the school board to participate,” Stack said. Coun. Dan Lynch was told today’s play structures are highly durable and will last up to 40 years without needing repairs or replacement. The idea was passed by council with unanimous support, though Coun. Lyle Anderson was absent. Construction is expected to start in spring, with the paving done before classes resume in the fall.

Public urged to join in a new year’s eve fun run planned for Arnprior Resolve to run and stay fit this coming New Year’s. The new Running Club of Arnprior will be holding a fun, social and untimed run on Saturday, Dec. 31, starting at 5 p.m. The run will start and finish at Danny Mac’s Pub. Runners are encouraged to put on their best Santa hat, flashing Christmas lights, and New Year’s finery – best costume and lights will receive a prize. The Running Club also wishes to support the Arnprior Food Bank by having all participants bring a non-perishable food item for registration. The Running Club began this

past summer led by Jane Dowd and sponsored by the Nick Smith Centre. The first night welcomed more than 70 runners of varying ages, abilities and experience. Over a 10-week period, the runners completed a walk/run program and gradually gained confidence and ability to complete a 5-km run. A group of trainers supported the new runners with encouragement, tips and kind words. The program was designed to give the new members not only a love for running, but the joy of getting fit. Each week the club had a great spirit and camara-

derie, which led up to the Unity Run in October. This brings it to the New Year’s Eve, Resolve to Run. Meet other runners at Danny

Mac’s Pub for fun, fitness and to support the community. Runners are encouraged to pre-register at the Nick Smith Centre and will then be able to

receive a personalized running bib. For more information, contact Jane Dowd at 613-623-9963. “We’ll see you at Danny Mac’s Pub, 5 p.m. on Dec. 31.”

Sarah Leighton went to the world powerlifting championships in the Czech Republic looking to proudly represent her country. She did, but with a more disappointing result than she expected. Leighton and lifters from Denmark and Finland failed to register a lift in one of their three lift categories. This resulted in a zero total in the 72-kilogram class. If Leighton had lifted around her personal best for her total lift, from the squat, bench press and deadlift, she would have placed sixth or seventh in the field of 11. But Leighton had trouble off the start, in the squat, in the city of Pilsen. Judges didn’t give the green light for any of her three attempts at 102.5 kilograms. However, she was allowed to remain in the competition. In the bench press, she made her third try at 120 kilograms to rank seventh in the field. In the deadlift, Leighton ranked ninth after making 165 kilos, failing at 175, then making her next try at 175. It was Leighton’s first-ever overseas competition. The winner was Priscilla Ribic of the United States with a total lift of 620 kilograms, compliments of a 235-kg. squat, a 145-kg. bench press, and 240 kilograms in the deadlift. Her deadlift results vaulted the American from third to first in the competition. Top-ranked Yula Medvedeva of Russia emerged second at 605. Third place went to Ana Castellain of Brazil with total poundage of 582.5. Leighton and husband-coach Paul Vaillancourt run Ultimate Fitness Gyms in Renfrew and Arnprior.

An early morning car crash into a hydro pole last Friday caused power outages in parts of West Carleton and Kanata. Ontario Provincial Police said a man who was allegedly driving under the influence and speeding down Highway 17 struck a hydro pole in the early morning of Dec. 9, knocking hydro wires onto the highway and cutting off power to around 5,000 people. The 27-year-old driver from Moose Creek, Ont. was heading westbound on Highway 17 when

he lost control of his vehicle and hit a hydro pole at about 2:45 a.m. close to Galetta Side Road east of Arnprior. The car then rolled over into a ditch. Both the driver and male passenger were treated for minor injuries at the Arnprior District Memorial Hospital. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. OPP Constable Rhéal Levac said the cause of the collision was driving too fast for weather

conditions and consuming alcohol. The driver was charged with careless driving and issued a three-day driver’s license suspension for operating a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol. Highway 17 was closed in both directions near Galetta Side Road as Hydro 1 reconnected power to various nearby communities including Constance Bay, Dunrobin, Kanata North, and Galetta. All east/west highway traffic

was diverted between Madawaska Boulevard and Kinburn Side Road. Levac estimated that Highway 17 would remain closed for about 12 to 14 hours, reopening mid-afternoon on Dec. 9. “The road itself is fine and there are no other vehicles to clear off the road, but Hydro 1 just has to put everything back together,” Levac said. The driver’s license was suspended after a breathalyzer test found he had alcohol in his sys-

tem, but was not over the legal limit, said police. Officers on the scene deemed him unfit to drive and issued the three-day suspension. The report did not mention the driver’s specific breathalyzer result. “It doesn’t give you the number, just a fail if you’re over the legal limit or an ‘A’ if you’re near it,” Levac said. Levac said that the driver’s result was an “A,” standing for “alert.”

OPP’s fill-A-cruiser great success Arnprior OPP along with the Arnprior Food Bank and Community Policing send out a special thanks to the community for all the generosity shown at their first annual food drive. The donations received will help so many families this year during the holiday season. The OPP also thanks the Metro grocery store for its donations, and Photo Max at the Arnprior Mall for processing all of its photos with Santa and donating a hundred per cent of all the proceeds to the food bank. “We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday with all the best wishes for the new year.” Photos by Chris Couper

By mid-day, the cruiser at the Arnprior Mall was filled near capacity as food donations continued to pour in. The annual OPP ‘Fill-a-Cruiser’ event directly benefits the local food bank with cash and food donations.

Santa cruises atop an OPP snowmobile with Deana Robillard, 6, of Pakenham. Santa posed for pictures as during last weekend’s ‘Fill-a-Cruiser’ fundraiser held at the Arnprior Mall.

The spirit of giving was alive on the weekend as local OPP officers, with the help of Santa and Arnprior Community Policing, held their ‘Fill-a-Cruiser’ event Sunday. The province-wide initiative challenges local residents and businesses to fill a cruiser with non-perishable food items to benefit the food bank. Shown here are: Cst. Raul Pasta-Junior, Sgt. and that’s something a student can easily do.” Queen Elizabeth Public School special education teacher Kaia Paddock spoke to the board of her impressions of the i Possibilities program at her school. The IT department provided Paddock’s class with an Apple iPod Touch and a Wireless Access Point last June. In October the IT and Special Education departments augmented these devices with an iPad 2 and video adapter to mirror the screen to the classroom Epson BrightLinks projector and six iPods. “It’s been a wonderful experience,” said Paddock, who also starred in the video presentation. “It has helped them improve their skills. We had to find ways to use creative programming.” She says students have also improved their ability to share and work independently on top of the skills improved upon through the use of the i equipment.

she said. Recent changes to the geographical boundaries of the board following amalgamation of the former school authorities at Whitney Public School and Madawaska Public School and a new strategic plan for the board has resulted in the need for a new corporate image for the RCDSB. Students can submit their original ideas for either a new board logo or motto (or both) to the director’s office by Dec. 23. Information on the contest is available at the board office, on the board website at www.renfrew.edu. on.ca or at their own school. Submit all entries to the director’s office, 1270 Pembroke St. West, Pembroke, Ontario K8A 4G4 or by email to mcintyres@renfrew.edu.on.ca.

RCDSB secondary school educators get lesson in critical thinking Having different answers didn’t matter. “These are critical challenges,” Gini-Newman said. “Think of classrooms as innovators of thought.” After the morning session, RCDSB educators split into smaller groups to attend breakout workshops on blended learning, smart board techniques, cloud technology, Kagan Cooperative learning, the Dual Credit program, environmental education, iTechnology and many other workshops educators could choose from. Following lunch, RCDSB secondary educators attended subject and role specific meetings before calling it a day of educating the educators.

A day off for Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) students opened up space in the classroom for teachers to take a seat and receive a lesson on critical thinking. During the Friday, Nov. 18 Professional Development day, all RCDSB secondary school educators gathered at Opeongo High School for a Learning Through Collaboration program tiled Inquiring Minds. All educators started the day gathering in the cafeteria to listen to keynote speaker Garfield Gini-Newman. He started the learning with his talk on Student Engagement Through Assessment Practices and Fostering Critical Thinking Skills. Gini-Newman is a senior lecturer at the University of Toronto and is a senior national consultant with the Critical Thinking Consortium. As a York Region educator he spent years teaching history, philosophy, politics and English. He said while students now have greater access to information than ever before, he is concerned, wondering if students are able to digest the information they have. Can they discern between useful and useless information? Can they come to successful conclusions filtering good information from bad and make good decisions? Gini-Newman discussed the importance of teaching critical thinking to students, engaged the educators through drills and encouraged open dialogue during the nearly two-hour multimedia presentation. One drill educators took part in was to listen to a James Blunt song and decide who ‘he’ is that Blunt refers to in his lyrics.

If a student does the Renfrew County District School Board’s (RCDSB) homework, they could win the most sought after gadget on the market today. The school board is looking for a new logo and a new motto and is prepared to offer up a brand new 16-gigabyte Ipad 2 for the RCDSB student who provides the winning entry. RCDSB Superintendent Debra Rantz has been a key facilitator in developing the new vision and mission statements for the school board. Rantz said with all the recent changes to the board it was time to update its logo and motto to reflect the new direction. “We believe in the talents of our students and look for their inspirations in creating a new image for the board,”

A twist on the old teaching tale, instead of receiving apples, Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) teachers are now using Apples in the teaching process of Renfrew County students. Seventeen RCDSB schools are taking part in two RCDSB pilot projects introducing the use of “i” devices as a teaching tool in classrooms. All schools involved received iPads and iPods, complete with special education software and other accessories, from the board’s Information Technology (IT) and Special Education Departments. RCDSB instructional technology leader Steve Blok spoke to the board Nov. 8 to discuss the pilot projects. “I want to give you an introduction,” he said. “Just a glimpse into the things we’ve been working on. We have a couple different pilots related to handheld devices, namely iPads and iPods.” Blok then shared a video synopsis of the pilot project on video screen featuring teacher interviews and clips of students using the equipment. “We created the whole video using the Ipad

PUPPETMASTERS PUT ON A SHOW AT THE MALL The Zelda and the Zingers Puppet Ministry held a show and Christmas party at the Arnprior Mall Saturday to raise money for a beach mission trip to Venice Florida on the spring break. Left, Lindsey Trafford, Keanna Maves and Kirsten Trafford were dressed up for the occasion. Above, the troupe performs a song. Other puppeters included Brooklyn Lalonde, Daniel Trafford Nikita Maves and balloon animal expert Spencer Cleghorn. “The kids put their heart into puppets ... and they are truly amazing ... all of them,” said Zelda organizer Carolyn Fraser. Eight youth and nine adults will be making the trip.

Packers up win streak to eight Arnprior boosts lead in Junior B Valley Division to eight points JOHN CARTER

Packer net and earned the win. Arnprior outshot Almonte 45 to 21.

john.carter@metroland.com

The Arnprior Packers stretched their winning streak to eight games and their Valley Division league to eight points with two more wins last weekend. The Packers strode confidently into Saturday’s game at the Almonte Community Arena, but the match was anything but easy, as it wasn’t decided until late in the game. In fact third-place Almonte took 2-0 and 3-1 leads before Arnprior scored twice late in the second period to tie the game. With the Thunder holding a 4-3 lead early in the third after a tally by league goal-scoring leader Derek Lowry, it was looking like the winning streak could come to an end. That is, until Matt Crozier, Shane Smith and Mitch Parker furiously fired away three goals in under a minute with machine-gun accuracy. Mitch Parker was on fire, with three goals and an assist. Parker, who joined the Packers in September from the Ottawa West Golden Knights, scored an unassisted goal with 2:48 left to salt away the win. Ben Wade had three assists for the Packers and Shane Smith had two helpers. Neither team scored on the powerplay. Mike Cheslock made a rare start in the

Football clubs dish out the hardware Grey Cup winner Dale Potter speaks to players about the right attitude on and off the field DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Another phenomenally successful football season wrapped up with an awards dinner for both the senior and junior Redman at Arnprior District High School on Dec. 7. Individual awards went to: • Most valuable player, senior, #36 Mitch Bott; • Most valuable player, junior, #33 Jaegar Prot; • Best lineman, senior, #89 Liam Schreiter; • Best lineman, junior, #96 Tim Choukair; • Most improved, senior, #5 Hugh Colbert; • Most improved, junior, #19 Ryan Kargus; • Spirit and sportsmanship, senior, #22 Brandon Firlotte; • Desire, determination, dedication, junior, #82 Andrew Lesk. Guest speaker for the evening was Dale Potter, six-time Grey Cup winner with the Edmonton Eskimos. He said it is tough to win a championship in any sport, at any level, and gave a nod to the seniors taking the Ontario AA championship for the second year in a row, along with the

juniors winning the regional title. “You keep doing it and doing it here at ADHS,” Potter said. “Usually that’s a sign of good coaching.” Potter recalled, as a five-year-old, banging around with his brothers; and later taking to the field as a junior for Hillcrest high school in Ottawa. He said he didn’t know how to put on the equipment, had no idea what the rules were, watched as other kids – including the girl he was interested in – walked home laughing and having fun at the other side of the field. And wondering what he got himself into. “So I wobbled out on the field and I kept at it,” he said. “It’s a great sport. Just to be able to knock people on their ass; you can’t do that anywhere else.” In his day, during the 1960’s, players would bump each other on the elbow in the hallway. Potter always enthusiastically did it to the seniors, but got little reaction. Still, his enthusiasm on the field finally won them over. One of the older players nudged him a bit in the hallway. “I knew I was in.” He encouraged older players to cheer along younger ones. It creates

a bond and gives confidence that could last a lifetime. PLAYING ADHS In high school, Potter’s Hillcrest varsity team would travel up to Arnprior to take on ADHS. For the first two years they would roll over the Redmen. But in 1968 they “learned a lesson” from Gordy McClelland. Still, today is an entirely different story. “We wouldn’t want to come up here to be playing again,” Potter said. He spoke of the need for confidence and determination, for conditioning, for off season workouts, and for always being aware that someone younger and strong is aiming for your job. Then he closed with words to live by, first spoken by his father. “You can never go wrong when you are doing the right thing.” IN THE TOP 20 The senior Redmen were named Photo by Derek Dunn among the best in the province, se- Six-time CFL champion Dale Potter with senior MVP winner cure the 20th spot on Ontario Foot- Mitch Bott. IN MEMORIAM

MULDOON Francis and Mary In loving memory of our dear parents, Mother who went to Heaven January 6, 1988 and Dad who joined her there November 24, 1996. The precious years we spent with you, Are worth their weight in gold. The joy and laughter we have shared, Are ours to have and hold. We remember all the yesterdays, You filled with loving care, The peace and comfort always felt, Just knowing you were there. Lord, tell them we love and miss them, And when they turn to smile, Place a kiss upon their cheek, And hold them for awhile. Lovingly remembered by children, Margaret, Irene, Anne, Willie, and Audrey

IN MEMORIAM

Paul Bertrand In loving memory of a dear father, grandfather and great grandfather who passed away December 18, 2010. One year has passed since that sad day, When one we loved was called away; You’re not forgotten, Father dear Nor ever shall you be; As long as life and memory last, We shall remember thee. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed, Dennis and Jeannette Wayne, Gayle and Family

BARR, Everton In loving memory of my husband Everton Barr and Grandsons Keven Borden and Jimmy O’Rourke. Deep in our hearts, A memory is kept, Of ones we loved and will never forget. Always remembered, Laura Barr

Without our hearts we’ll always keep, A special place for you, And try to live the best we can, As you would want us to. You gave us years of happiness, Then came sorrow and tears, But you left us lasting memories, We will cherish through the years. Loved, Sadly missed and always remembered, Joyce, Don, Paul and Ryan SHIDELER, Ruth December 17, 2010 It is only a year on the calendar since you left us, But it seems so much longer since we shared your laugh and love. Deeply missed by her children, Pat, John, Betty and Jan; her grandchildren Cathy, Trish, Robert, Greg, Geoff and Corey and great grandchildren Ella, Brandon, Johnny, Dylan, Charlotte, Geneva Ruth and Adelaide.

I remember it like yesterday, when we learned of our worst fear It was Christmas Day 2005; that painful memory is so very clear God took you home that day and our hearts were broken in two A special day meant for rejoicing, but no longer with the gift of you I hear the song White Christmas and tears well in my eyes But I try so hard to hide my sorrow with a smile as my disguise I look toward the far away skies for a glimpse of your smiling face I listen for your laughter, which a quiet silence has replaced I know you are in Heaven with Dad and Mom by your side That brings a feeling of peace and calm way down deep inside The spirit of Christmas time has forever changed in our lives As brothers and sisters we were once six, but now we are just five Christmas for us may have changed, but you’re with us in every way You are evermore engraved in our hearts with love that will never fade You’re not at our Christmas table, but your photo is under the tree Right beside Mom and Dad, the ones we love - You’re the missing three Not just at Christmas but all year long, our thoughts turn to all of you All the wonderful memories we made, will carry us our whole life through Magic moments, family times and our cherished time together Our love for you will never fade and remain in our hearts forever Please give Mom and Dad a hug, and know you are all the reason Why we are together as a family, keeping close this yuletide season It’s really hard without you all here, at Christmas 2011 But we will be reunited someday, in a Blessed place called Heaven First my brother, forever my friend, Love Linda Deeply cherished, loved and missed by all the family

Missing You The pain has not gone away I still suffer yet, as if it were yesterday, I’m lonely in the days, especially the nights, The loneliness never ends, it only bring more tears. I miss your sweet caress, I miss your sweet lips. But most of all, I miss the kindness in your heart, Who knew on this date we would part. Even though the sun still shines, It seems so dull to me, without you, And when the rain falls, It’s like the tears I shed for you. Well time has left me all alone, But we will meet again, this I know We will be together, in each others arms But his time, no one will take you from me. Forever my Babe
