Late night confrontation cited in Blaskie death SHERRY HAAIMA Sherry.haaima@metroland.com
A 41-year-old Arnprior man has died after a late night confrontation at a home in town. Police report that Corey Blaskie was showing no signs of life when they responded early Sunday morning to a 911 call about a break-in in progress at an Edward Street home. Blaskie died following a confrontation with two of the homeowners, say police, who were called at 12:20 a.m. While police are still investigating, no charges have been laid in the incident. The Arnprior forum for the four candidates vying to become Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MPP in the provincial election Oct. 6 has changed date and location. The Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce has gracefully agreed to move its all-candidates meeting to Thursday, Sept. 22 (from Wednesday) to resolve a conflict with a forum in Renfrew hosted by area teachers. The Arnprior forum has also been
moved from the Nick Smith Centre to Arnprior District High School. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Progressive Conservative candidate John Yakabuski, who opened a campaign office at the Arnprior Mall Wednesday, said he would attend the Arnprior session but not ones focused on one issue, such as the Sept. 21 forum. For more election news, see pages 12 and 13.

Police warn public about offender’s possible return DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
An Arnprior offender who is ordered to stay away from a large group of people was released from jail Sunday, Sept. 11. Andre Leblond, 56, pleaded guilty in August to eight charges, including five of criminal harassment against five different people; the other offences are weapons-related. A judge in Pembroke Aug. 23 heard about Leblond’s incidents dating back to 1995 in Arnprior and McNab-Braeside. That year a woman entered his house where he pointed a shotgun at her head, the court was told. Other incidents related to the court included Leblond making a knife blade at his work, following women home from work, calling people up to 20 times a day, keying cars, and holding a tomahawk while confronting a neighbour about loud music. Arnprior OPP met with many of Leblond’s 70 victims twice before his release to explain what to do should he attempt to contact them or come within 100 metres of their home or work. Many are employees of Arnprior Aerospace where he used to work. Leblond has been in jail since March 30 when police executed a public safety warrant at his Arnprior home and Quebec cottage. They say they found 33 firearms secured improperly. He received credit for his 147 days in jail before trial. He is on probation for three years. Investigating officer Det. Const. Jennifer Calder can’t confirm Leblond is returning to Arnprior, but says there is cause for people to be vigilant. “There are people in the public concerned,” Calder said. “We are concerned, too.” Leblond, has a number of conditions to follow, including: • a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., seven days a week; • abstain from owning or possessing weapons and firearms for 10 years; • follow a probation order for treatment and counselling; • not be within 100 metres of homes and places of employment of the victims or others on a court list; • not drive a vehicle, except to and from work; • not possess a GPS. “If people feel their safety is in jeopardy or that he (is) not abiding by his conditions, call police,” Calder said. “If people do see him driving and don’t think it’s to and from work – call immediately and police will follow up right away.”
An OPP officer is stationed outside 44 Edward St. Sunday afternoon.
Death incident involved break-in: OPP
Continued from front “OPP investigators have determined that Blaskie died following a confrontation with two of the homeowners,” says a Monday evening OPP press release. While neighbours suggested it was a father and son who were involved in the incident, official details have been slow to emerge. Initially, all police would say is they were investigating a death at a home at 44 Edward St. in Arnprior. An autopsy was performed Monday, but police say the results will not be released at this time. They released the victim’s name Monday night and disclosed they had attented the scene because of a call about a break-in that was happening. Neighbours have said the family in the
Edward Street home has been victimized by thieves at least a couple of times recently. The home is next to a well-used trail going through town. The police investigation is continuing under the direction of OPP Detective Inspector David MacDonald of the Criminal Investigation Branch. In its Monday release, the OPP reminded the public to be aware of their personal safety at all times and to call 911 to report serious crimes in progress. Tips can be found at the website www. opp.ca. An informal gathering to remember Corey Blaskie, a father, stepfather and grandfather, will be held this Saturday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. at the home he shared with Jennifer Prince of Arnprior.

Arnprior featured on live television derek.dunn@metroland.com
It was a festive, upbeat atmosphere at Robert Simpson Park Tuesday evening. People in lawn chairs, children laughing and dancing, speakers, lights and sound equipment everywhere. But it wasn’t a band playing in the popular Concerts in the Park series. It was the crew from CTV – Ottawa on their Home Town Tour. Anchors Carol Anne Meehan and Graham Richardson, along with weatherman J.J. Clarke and sports reporter Terry Marcotte, set up at the gazebo for News at 6. The weather was overcast but dry, perfect for live television. “A very enthusiastic group,” Richardson said of the 250 or more at the event, after Clarke warmed them up with a few jokes. “I love Arnprior. I remember driving through it as a child long before the bypass,” Meehan said later. “The heritage buildings along the river were always striking. And I love the large wide streets and lovely old homes. I was very impressed with the waterfront park. It was just beautiful and we were so lucky with the weather.” She said they were all thrilled with the crowd, and met many very loyal fans, especially the red hat ladies. And made some new ones. “All around we consider our hometown stop in Arnprior a
huge success,” said the Pembroke native. The lead story was about the temporary closure of the cafeteria at Arnprior District High School, detailed in a recent issue of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. Interviewed were students Melissa Logan, Tyler Pike and Brock Smith, along with principal Neil Farmer. Many more were filmed in the hallways and at Gord’s Convenience Store. Clarke was surrounded by Arnprior kids holding foam microphones during his currentweather conditions segment. A second local story dealt with the tension between the Arnprior keeping its small town charm but allowing for modest growth. Mayor David Reid, in an interview, talked about the issue. So did radio reporter Peter DeWolf. CTV visited Robertson’s Furniture in the downtown core, a rarity in larger centres; John Robertson was interviewed. Simply Elegant’s Joyce Landers said boxstores have turned Carleton Place’s downtown into “a ghost town,” before urging members of sports teams and other recipients of small business contributions to shop locally in exchange for the support. Realtor Mike Delfalco talked about promoting Arnprior as being 40 minutes from Kanata. Richardson did a third piece on Arnprior’s history as a lumber town. Throughout each segment, many beautiful images of the town were shown, including

Braeside post office location sought SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com
McNab-Braeside will keep the promise to maintain a post office in Braeside, but it’s not completely clear where that will be. It seemed the ongoing issue of postal service in the village might be closer to resolution when Canada Post and the union covering postmasters recently downgraded the office, meaning the location is provided by the postmaster instead of the corporation. Fire Station 3 in Braeside had been considered a suitable location when Canada Post and municipal officials toured the facility earlier this year, but the fire department says fitting the service into that building might not be the right thing to do. Fire Chief Ken Walton, fire prevention officer Karen Barsoski and members of the department were at a special council meeting Monday, Sept. 12 to voice their concerns. Also present was Linda Lacroix, who hopes to become the postmaster and was looking for a commitment from council that a location would be provided for her to lease. The position is about to be posted, Lacroix explained, and among the requirements is a confirmed suitable location. “We want to support the fact of a post office in the township, we’d just like to have more opportunity to discuss it,” said Walton. Among the fire department’s concerns are space for parking and vehicles in the way of fire vehicles and secure storage for their files and other materials, including fire prevention materials, Walton told council. Station 3 is also the only one with a meeting room and stairs suitable for training.
McNab-Braeside fire Chief Ken Walton expresses concerns about the possibility of a post office at the fire station in Braeside. Front right is Linda Lacroix, who hopes to become the postmaster for the Braeside location. Photo by Sherry Haaima Prevention officer Barsoski stressed the importance of the fire service and the prevention sector in particular, which she and the department have been working to build and strengthen. The hope was to build on what has been established and bring fire prevention and the officers closer to the public with their own accessible space. Mayor Mary Campbell pointed out
M-B mayor applauds Canada Post move to use civic addresses SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com
The first step in addresses that better reflect geographic location in the Township of McNab-Braeside has been taken. On Sept. 12, township council passed a resolution supporting correspondence from Canada Post outlining changes that include customers using their civic addresses and not requiring a rural route number. Currently, some rural routes fall under Renfrew and others under Arnprior, explained McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell. This means people using online map features and searching for addresses using the township’s name don’t get the needed results. The reallocation of rural routes and postal walks offers the opportunity to begin the process of correcting the realignment of municipal and postal addresses by using McNab-Braeside as the municipal name in the postal address, says coun-
cil’s resolution. While the overall process will take some time and some residents will balk at an address switch, it’s a needed change, says the mayor. “If we’re going to do it, we’re going to have to start somewhere,” said Campbell. “We’re sending a signal.” There are only a handful of residences affected this time around, but Canada Post says other addresses in the municipality not using the township’s name will be converted at a later date. Coun. Aldene Styles said she felt many township residents would be unhappy with the change. She was the lone vote against council’s resolution supporting the change. Use of civic addresses makes mail delivery much easier for carriers, especially when someone has to fill in temporarily, said Campbell. All affected customers will receive a letter from Canada Post and will have a one-year grace period to implement the change.
Abandoned Marine Assets
the resolution that was later passed did not specify a location. She noted a number of options, including the RA Centre and the recently-purchased building on property on Russett Drive next to the township office. Walton said the department would have to see the locations and discuss any changes with township and Canada Post officials. Campbell said all options will have to be explored, but discussions did seem to suggest the station as the best location. Council passed the resolution stating municipal space will be provided at cost to the successful candidate with rental rates subject to an annual cost-of-living increase. Outfitting the post office and liability associated with public access is the responsibility of the postmaster and Canada Post. Members of the fire department will join council on a tour of the Russett Drive building next Tuesday. Council pledged to keep the service in the village when Canada Post closed the Braeside office earlier this year.

Riverkeeper gathers data along the Ottawa Riverkeeper Meredith Brown and photographer Mike Beedell are set to leave the Red Pine Bay boat launch last Thursday morning. Mayor Mary Campbell and Garry Brake shared a lot of information about the Ottawa River with Brown, who travelled most of its length this summer gathering water samples and hearing from municipal stakeholders. Brown said the overall health of the river is good, but people have to stay vigilant if they intend to improve it even more.
DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Warning that new national standards for rivers are imminent was the message from Ottawa Riverkeeper Meredith Brown on her local stops while canoeing much of the river this summer. Brown and three others in two canoes conducted The Great River Project, a 900-km journey to document the state of the Ottawa. She said municipalities should ready themselves for the new regulations – meant to bring all waterways up to healthy levels. Had the last Arnprior council kept it closer in mind, it may have gone for an option other than the new treated sewage pipe leading into the river, she said. The pipe came up often when Brown met for morning coffee and cupcakes with McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell and others at Red Pine Bay beach on Sept. 8. None were pleased with what is considered an outdated method. However, when Brown met with Arnprior Mayor David Reid and others at the Galilee Centre at noon that day, she learned the Ministry of Environment approved the pipe because the sewage goes through a second level of treatment, making it very clean. Brown seemed satisfied with the answer. Still, the federal regulations are kept from being implemented because municipalities want more money to cope. No one is sure when the regulations will be in force. LANDFILL LINER Meanwhile, another issue discussed with Campbell that morning was the Arnprior Landfill Site. Campbell said if a liner is installed the buffer zone would be reduced and her township could approve nearby development. “Why should we curtail our tax base because Arnprior won’t put in a liner?” Campbell said. Brown is more concerned with landfill contaminants reaching the river, and asked Reid about it later. “It would be great to get a liner,” she said. Reid said small municipalities rely on meeting provincial policies, and that “in an ideal world we’d do it all,” he said. Piggybacking on projects approved for the City of Ottawa is the best Arnprior can hope for. He added the town is working on infrastructure upgrades to the water and wastewater plants, along with replacing distribution pipes. Brown later agreed that a liner would prove “costly” for taxpayers. She also discussed the disposal

of biosolids produced at the newly upgraded wastewater plant, learning they are taken to the landfill. Town staff was unsure if private sewage along MacLean Avenue was also taken there. The news didn’t sit well with the Riverkeeper. Reid then mused aloud about improving incineration technology. He also mentioned potential commuter rail as helpful from an environmental angle. Brown was interested, particularly since the track snakes across the river in various areas. Reid said Arnprior has about 3,500 households, with a third having at least one person commuting to the city for work. Add in personal trips, plus about the same number from McNab-Braeside’s 2,000 households, and the train could become useful. QUARRY EXPANSION PLANS Another issue in Braeside has to do with drainage. Campbell explained that the area is built on fractured limestone called alvar, and may be above an underwater lake. Liquids travel quickly through cracks in rock and could containment nearby homes and the Ottawa River if government fails to proceed with caution. “You have to be careful about development,” Campbell said. “They (nearby residents) are concerned about the (possible) expansion of the quarry, and the dump.” Brown was very interested in Tembec’s work adjacent to Red Pine Bay. A large tract of land there is being dug for bark used in mulch. The company pulled down buildings to lessen the property taxes, but doesn’t intend to pay the $100,000 or more to have
an Environmental Assessment (EA) done. An EA is needed before development can take place. Campbell said the waterfront property would be ideal for homes and public buildings. She envisioned people leaving the new Braeside beach or returning from the boat launch to walk through the Tembec area for a wedding at a recreation centre. RURAL CULTURE

Talk turned to the best way to consume water and dispose of sewage. Campbell insisted that the “culture” of those who enjoy a rural lifestyle says drinking ground water is safer than municipal water pumped with chemicals. She added that private septic systems 128 JOHN STREET N. have improved greatly, but that a town’s highest energy costs go toward wastewaDOWNTOWN ARNPRIOR ter plants. Too bad the provincial government treats urban wastewater treatment plants as a priority far ahead of septic tanks and pods, she added. Town to consider building new sports field in Arnprior DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
They’re already here – so you might as well build it. The town’s parks and recreation advisory committee will discuss at Monday’s meeting the possibility of building a new sports field in Arnprior. It’s been an ongoing discussion between the town and high school for a few years now, but this is the first time talks have been formalized. Arnprior District High School teacher Andrew Schneider, who has coached student athletes for 10 years, penned a letter to the committee saying how shocked he was upon arrival
that a school with 1,000 students only had one field. Others have three or more. Although student enrollment has dropped, he wrote, the grass on the field has no time to recover before the next sports group takes to it. USED TOO MUCH “This field is far from a lost cause, but it needs to be used half as much as it currently is,” Schneider wrote. “If the construction/conversion of a new field in this community is something that is being considered, please let me reassure you that it would be a worthy long-term investment.”

Developer Don Johnston’s plan to build an apartment and townhouses across the parking lot from the Grove Nursing Home met with some resistance at a Monday public meeting held during Arnprior council proceedings. The public meeting was held to seek approval to move from a residential zoning 1 to residential zoning 3, meaning Johnston could increase the density from single detached homes to allow for more people to live in the area. The development would see 40 townhouses, and 52-unit three-storey apartment building, along with a road layout and serving easements. It could mean homes for about 230 people, primarily seniors. Town planner Robin Smith explained the development would have to have a 10metre buffer zone against Gillies Grove, along with a five-metre setback to protect plant and animal species. However, two residents on hand were more interested in learning about the effects on ground water they use. Mayor David Reid said a second public meeting will be held to discuss water, stormwater, drainage and other issues. A written submission listing five concerns was sent by Arnprior District Memorial Hospital (ADMH) and Grove Nursing Home president and CEO Eric Hanna. He said the corporation “is not opposed to the rezoning” so long as certain issues are resolved. He wrote sewer capacity could be affected with a new development, and that ADMH remains in a constrained financial position and couldn’t share upgrading costs. ADMH is also considering an expansion of bed numbers at the nursing home,

There is talk of converting one of the baseball diamonds at MacLean Park into a field for rugby and other sports. It is less costly than starting from scratch in another location. However, a town official said there are other locations that could accommodate a sports field. The committee meeting is set for Sept 19, 6:30 p.m., at Nick Smith Centre. It is open to the public. Other issues the committee will consider in the coming months include a tennis club formation and facilities; yacht club and its usage; a lacrosse program; the boat launch; and a sports club as a fundraising source.
and is asking council to keep that in mind when it considers whether or not sewer capacity can accommodate a subdivision. He wrote that the one water service line to the nursing home doubles as a source of water for emergency services. “We would be concerned should the plan of a subdivision reduce the current flow of water to our facility, jeopardizing the effectiveness of emergency services (e.g. water for the fire department). Increased traffic in the area is also a concern for residents who “enjoy a quiet and calm setting” in the natural beauty of the Grove. Finally, Hanna asked that councillors ensure landscaping near natural buffers and wetlands retain the natural beauty of the property. Council approved the zoning change. It will be at least late October before the issue is raised at council again. McNab-Braeside council will also look at the development, since it abuts the township at Division Street. WINDOW CONTRACT PAINS The Arnprior and District Museum board wanted town council to award a window contract to a company that didn’t put in the lowest bid. The board recommended Toner Carpentry win the job at $27,145, rather than Shanab Management at $23,800. The reasoning is: Toner did work at the museum in the past; they are based in Almonte they are local; and they do good work. Council asked curator Janet Collins about the lowest bidder. She said they are from Nepean, which some councillors consider local. And they have a solid reputation. Council also worried that not going with the lowest could leave the town open to litigation, if a company is reputable. Council opted for the lowest bid.

Everyone from school children to professional graphic artists submitted work, much of it incorporating the number 150 with white pines or the museum. In the end the winner was a logo that incorporated the number with the bridge. Graphic designer and part-time East Side Mario’s bartender Francis Dupuis was on hand with about a dozen other finalists at Monday’s Arnprior council meeting to hear the news. Council endorsed the committee’s recommendation, making it official. Councillors suggested having many of the entries on display at the library or another municipal building. The nomination period for the 150th anniversary painting – to be on display at town hall, with the artist earning proceeds from reprints – has been extended. Some artists submitted sketches, but have been granted time to produce final products, said committee chairwoman Lynn Grinstead.

Reeve Walter Stack said the town is approving developments that include many townhomes. Few have backyards large enough to keep things like campers, so they would have to park them in their driveways. He indicated it wouldn’t be fair to prevent homeowners from keeping them on their property. He also said the town doesn’t allow for tented garages to cover them, either; something he appeared to not support. Staffer Robin Smith said the bylaws are on the books and her recommendation is simply to increase the fines. If council wants to do away with the bylaws, that is for another time. et’s talk about suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10 to 24, according to recent numbers from Statistics Canada. Studies show a significant percentage of adolescents contemplate a plan or attempt suicide without seeking or receiving help. The issue exploded onto the radar of this area’s parents last year after the parents of Daron Richardson publicized the details of their 14-year-old daughter’s suicide on Nov. 15, 2010. During a press conference following his daughter’s death, Richardson said he and his wife talked about difficult subjects with their daughter like alcohol and drug abuse and sex. But they never discussed mental health. “I wish we did talk about it before,” he said. “But we just didn’t think it was there.” Dr. Ian Manion, a CHEO clinical psychologist, said in many cases parents don’t seek help because of the stigma of mental health issues. This week, we begin a three-part series that discusses the issue of youth suicide and what we as a community can do to combat the problem. Because the first step in facing any problem is talking about it. We’re hoping this series will help educate people about mental health issues and enable parents, family, friends – everyone – identify the resources available in the community. It only takes one caring person to make a difference, but we have to be comfortable with asking the hard questions. One of the first steps should be taken by our government – did you know that Canada is the only G8 country without a national suicide prevention strategy – basically a playbook that allow different agencies and groups to work together to combat the issue. On a grassroots level, we need to teach the issue in schools, provide suicide-prevention training for any adult who works with groups of children. Parents must learn how to identify potential mental health problems, a skill that begins with knowing how to talk to their child. Children lack emotional maturity and they have never been taught the language skills need to express their emotions. So many keep it bottled up inside – and some just can’t handle it. This is a national problem in need of a national solution, from the ground up. It takes a village to raise a child – it might need a nation to save them.

Taxi drivers are fully qualified To the editor: I would like to clarify a few things for Mr. Dennis Harrington of Home Support. To deny that Home Support is not a subsidized taxi service is wrong. When you transport people around for money, Mr. Harrington, you are a taxi service. No matter what name you put on it. To imply that taxis in town are running without proper insurance and fully qualified drivers is wrong. I know the ramifications of all the legal aspects of my business. My parents didn’t raise no fool. A few years ago when Arnprior was under the Gibeau regime, it was decided by council that they deregulate the taxi business, strongly opposed by the taxi owners at the time, but looking back it was a positive thing. It has been proven time and over again that government plus business equals more cost. Now town council is considering getting back into the taxi business. Maybe they can get all the taxis some grants to offset our expenses. No system is perfect. But Mr. Stack’s comment that Home Support is the only public transportation in the Valley is false. Or did I just miss the last 15 years of us serving the public? Karl MacNamara A-1 Taxi co-owner

To the editor: For the past several months I have followed the articles in the Chronicle-Guide re. the above noted subject (Braeside Quarry). I find it most disturbing that Mrs. Moore continues her attempt of discrediting the Miller Group with their operation, which is in keeping with the Miller Group reputation for sound and environmental sensitive business in all of their locations, including McNab Township. Prior to moving back to my hometown of Arnprior, I lived in the historic village of Unionville, which is one of the four villages that make up the Town of Markham, Ontario. Miller Group headquarters is located in the centre of Markham, just south of Hwy. 7 off Woodbine Avenue. As a resident there, I was aware of their very busy operation. It functioned at a high rate of productivity and did so without contaminating or causing concern to the local residents, both corporate and homeowners. Markham is known as a major Corporate Centre just north of Toronto. It should be remembered that in 1996 the Miller Group purchased Smith Construction, the decades-old business of the Smith family, which included the quarry that has been operational for decades. Their offices were always based in Arnprior. They were prominent in highway construction throughout the Ottawa Valley. I believe that the McNab residents were happy to have an employer located in their immediate neighbourhood to provide work for both unskilled and skilled labour. It also demonstrates that Mrs. Moore, et al has a short-term memory of the quick response that the Miller Group made during, and after, the July 29 2009 storm, that saw numerous roads, private driveways, culverts, cottages and even railway overpasses extremely damaged and made impassable after that Friday’s deluge. At the time I am confident that most local residents, including the Moore family, were thankful to have an aggregate resource so close at hand to assist. The Miller employees were on site with the aggregate, and any heavy equipment necessary to respond immediately to the disaster for McNab. More recently when McNab was attempting to prepare the ‘Braeside Beach’ for their River Days’ celebrations, Miller once again responded in short order to help, and insure, that the event was ready and enjoyable by all. Miller has always been well known as a good corporate sponsor of many worthwhile community initiatives, i.e. Arnprior Hospital.

Remembering Eileen this Terry Fox Day To the editor: I knew at the beginning of 2011 that I would hold this year’s Terry Fox Run in memory of my sister Eileen. In February she was told by her doctors that she had only a few months to live. Chemotherapy and radiation had bought her some time, but for her time was running out. From the beginning, time was Eileen’s enemy. Her case was unusual in that the first time around a hospital error led to an 18-month delay from the time she was tested and the mass on her lung was detected, to the time she was actually informed and treatment was started. On Dec. 20, 2006, Eileen was to have her lung removed. Minutes before she was to get anaesthetic, she suffered a stroke and surgery was cancelled. The next day at a family meeting, Dr. Sealey informed us that Eileen could never have surgery. Radiation treatments followed and Eileen seemed to rally. When cancer was detected in her other lung, she endured radiation and chemotherapy treatments. By the summer of 2010, Eileen had lost 52 pounds with the aggressive treatments. Fearing it would be her last birthday, we organized a party, attended by 95 family members and friends. Despite being so desperately thin
and weak, Eileen glowed with happiness and was heard to say several times, “I never knew I was so loved.” When Eileen was told in February 2011 she had just months to live, she was also informed the cancer was now in her brain. She may have staggered with the news of her forthcoming death, but she refused to stop her daily pattern of living. Her first stop every day was her favourite store, the Op Shop. Eileen delighted in her shopping for other people, especially babies. Although my great granddaughter Isabella is just six months old, her drawers and closets are bursting with clothes up to size four purchased by Eileen. Some day in the future, I hope to tell Isabella about Eileen. On Saturdays, accompanied by sisters Caroline and Mary, made the trip to Pembroke for her favourite pastime, bingo. It is not surprising that a bingo card is engraved on her headstone and buried with her urn is – you guessed it – her bingo bag! Caroline, owner of the cemetery plot and headstone, was honoured when Eileen requested they share their final resting place. Below their names is written ‘God made us sisters; love made us friends.’ In her final days, Eileen was never
alone. Her immediate family, her friend Lavern and we, her many siblings and relatives, were her constant companions. She smiled as she heard the same goodbye words from everyone: ‘I love you Mom.” “I love you Nanny.” “I love you Eileen.” When Eileen first learned of her impending death, I used to phone her and announce: “This is Mrs. Stevie Wonder calling and I want to sing a song for you.” I would then proceed to sing the song I just called to say I love you. Eileen would laugh and say, ‘O you are a nut, but I like your song.” When I said my final goodbye to Eileen, she opened her eyes and smiled. I said, “I love you Eileen and because you’re awake I’m going to sing our favourite song. “I just called to say I love you. I just called to say I care. I just called to say I love you and I mean it from the bottom of my heart.” That’s as far as I got. It’s hard to sing and cry at the same time. Eileen died the next day. I am holding the Terry Fox Run Sunday, Sept. 18 in memory of Eileen. Drop up to the agricultural society track between 1 and 4 p.m. and we’ll chat about Eileen and days gone by.

will be celebrating its
Rising costs forcing too many to exist on too little To the editor: Recently Minister of National Defence Peter McKay did a stint as a recruit soldier in the Forces to see what it was like. Wouldn’t it be great to see a dozen or so ministers living on $1,000 per month, clothing, food, paying rent or mortgage, possibly heating, hydro and phone bills and caring for a wife and three children! Fossil fuel domino effect, shafting, gouging, or just plain greed, call it what you will, it is quickly taking its toll on those at the low-end of the pay scale and they are struggling more and more
to make it from pay cheque to pay cheque to eke out a living. More rely on food banks and sadly proper nutrition and health issues are reflected in our youth. Feeding of our many youngsters has never become clearer when a family can buy noname pop at four litres for $2 but four litres of 2 per cent milk is $7.49. It is any wonder our schools now have as part of their curriculum a meal session where children are fed because their parents can’t afford to feed them at home. We all should be burning with shame. A year ago gasoline was
around 97 cents a litre and today it is $1.25. This costs a whopping 25 per cent to 28 per cent is being added to everything from ham and eggs to cereal and bread, tires and computers. Why is it that when oil was at $97 a barrel last year it was also 97 cents a litre and this year when oil is at $85 a barrel gasoline is $1.25 a litre!? Talk about gouging! Few and anyone on the lower end of the pay scale has seen anything even comparable to a cost-of-living increase that helps them to keep their heads above water and the super-inflated costs of oil and its devastat-
ing domino effect is hurting too many families. Farmers are also taking a whack as the fuels they use to plough, cultivate, plant and harvest crops and care for livestock only add to their costs and this in effect is following along on the food-chain increasing the price of the most needed staple of all … food $1,000 a month! Many will argue that they are struggling to do it on less and with milk at $7.49 I believe it.

The Arnprior and District Humane Society is bursting at the seams with cats. “We currently have 153 cats in the shelter and several more in foster care,” says shelter manager Stephanie Cantrell. “This is by far the worst year we have had for stray and abandoned cats, and unfortunately, there seems to be more people looking to give up their pets than take new ones home.” The shelter is appealing to the public to help deal with the problem. Adopting a cat or making a financial contribution will go a long way towards providing some relief, say officials. As Arnprior is a no-kill shelter, a boost in population means pretty tight quarters. Cantrell cautions adopting an animal is a big decision. “Becoming a pet owner comes with a lot of responsibility and cost,” she says. “It is a 10-20 year commitment to that animal and it is not a decision that should be made impulsively. The shelter adoption fee is $160 for cats or kittens, which includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, microchipping and a health guarantee. The shelter on Didak Drive is open Monday to Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

Lewis McDonald of Renfrew is back for his second straight provincial election as the chief returning officer for the riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. The retired teacher from Renfrew Collegiate Institute is working out of the returning office in the Pembroke Mall beside the Dollarama. For the first time, the riding will also have a satellite office. “No federal or provincial election in the riding has had a satellite office before,” said MacDonald. This will save travel time for residents in such areas as Arnprior, McNab-Braeside, Calabogie, Admaston-Bromley and Renfrew, whether it’s to register as a voter, vote in the advance polls, or deal with other issues. The satellite opened last week at 342 Raglan St. in Renfrew, beside the O’Brien Theatre, where staff includes election officer Alexis O’Neil of Douglas and four other members. There will also be more communities with advance polls, but reduced voting periods for some in RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke. In the 2007 provincial election, there were eight locations with 10 voting days.
This time, only Arnprior, Renfrew, Pembroke, Petawawa and Barry’s Bay have advance polls for 10 days, for the period of Sept. 21 to 30. The Arnprior location is the Arnprior Shopping Mall. All advance polls will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting on Election Day (Thursday, Oct. 6) will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The riding will have 245 polls at about 95 locations, including several sites in Arnprior. Voters, of which there are 72,015 in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, will also be eligible to cast special ballots at the main returning office and the satellite office if they’ll be away, or unavailable, during the scheduled voting periods. All ballots will be hand counted, except special ballots that are cast at advance-poll ballots at the main and satellite offices of the returning officer. Those ballots will be counted electronically, by a tabulated deputy returning officer. “It’s new voting technology to help people with disabilities to cast a vote on their own,” said O’Neil. “It’s a machine that has technology for visual impairment and hearing impairment, and foot pedals for those who have upper-body mobility problems.”

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski invited the oldest supporter present, 92-year-old Mervyn Tripp, to cut the ribbon at the opening of his Arnprior campaign office Wednesday With a little more than 20 days until the Oct. 6 provincial election, Yakabuski said he continues to hear from families in the riding who can’t make ends meet. “Whether it’s hydro rate increases, tax increases or HST on so many essentials, people are struggling,” he said. “How are we going to afford four more years under the McGuinty government?” Provincial PC leader Tim Hudak and
the party offer tax relief for families and small businesses “On Oct. 7, I want Ontario to be a different place,” said Yakabuski. He thanked the many volunteers in attendance for their continued support. Yakabuski said he was impressed with the bright and spacious location, outfitted solely with borrowed items and volunteers. Located in the former Pet Valu store at the Arnprior Mall, Arnprior is one of five offices he has in the riding. “We’re going to have visibility and signage in as many communities as possible,” he said. The office will be open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Candidates raise tax, health concerns Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Liberal candidate John O’Leary charged that Progressive Conservative policies would force municipalities to raise property taxes. O’Leary also welcomed a group of firefighters tour the province in support of the Liberals. The Firefighters for McGuinty bus was scheduled to visit the riding today (Thursday). “We are proud to support John and are looking forward to pitching in to raise awareness about his campaign in the riding,”
said Chris Francescone, executive regional vicepresident of the Ontario Professional Firefighters Association. Meanwhile in a speech Wednesday, O’Leary maintained that the Hudak PCs “downloading scheme” will “drive up your property taxes.” The City of Ottawa said that the PCs are going to cause a property tax hike of six per cent, or $186 per household, said O’Leary. “It will be the same or worse here in Renfrew County. Meanwhile, NDP candi-
date Brian Dougherty expressed concern this week about the erosion of local health care under Liberals and Conservatives. The Arnrprior electrician and father of two says people are telling him they are frustrated because Ontario’s health care system is falling short of meeting their needs. “Services are being cut as the system becomes more inaccessible for many vulnerable Ontarians,” he said after meeting with area residents at the Renfrew Fair and Bonnechere Manor.

Several area stops on Rural Ramble STAFF The Rural Ramble in the Ottawa Valley has several Arnprior and McNab-Braeside stops this year. The Arnprior and Waba museums, Braeside’s Ballintotas Alpacas and the Kippen Road Tarten Weaving are on list. The four-weekend celebration of rural living began last weekend with its adventure and exploration segment. This weekend’s theme is agriculture and food and the stops include this Saturday’s Renfrew County Plowing Match. The annual event runs 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Queen’s Line farm of Ron and Shirley Kasaboski. The history and heritage weekend Sept. 24-25 includes stops at the Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens and the Arnprior Museum, which will have a blacksmith demonstrating his trade. Both museums will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The McDougall Mill Museum in Renfrew will be featuring Bill Burwell’s steam engine and steam-cooked corn on the cob. The arts and culture weekend Oct. 1 and 2 features a stop at Ballintotas Alpacas at 78 Braeloch Rd, where visitors can meet the alpacas and take in button-making and nuno-felting demonstrations. At 272 Kippen Rd. in McNabBraeside, rural ramblers can take in tarten displays and scarf hand-weaving demonstrations at Kippen Road Tarten Weaving. There are also many more stops up and down Renfrew County during the four weekends. Organized by the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association (OVTA), the Rural Ramble is a free, selfguided driving tour set against a backdrop of beautiful fall colours. The ramble includes many natural and human-built wonders of the region, the various agricultural and rural operations of the scenic countryside, the rich history and heritage of Ottawa Valley residents, as well as the area’s vibrant arts and
cultural communities. “This is the second year with the new extended Rural Ramble format, and we are pleased to see so many new sites participating,” noted Lauren McIllfaterick, OVTA communications co-ordinator. “The 2011 Rural Ramble promises to be exciting with more sites, new prizes and contests, and no admission fee to the public.” Each year, more than 2,000 visitors flock to Renfrew County to enjoy the fresh air and glorious fall colours while experiencing some of the best of what the Ottawa Valley has to offer. With an unprecedented 41 sites participating this year, there are lots of new things to see and do, including: • take home a free Whitewater Premium Candle Co. ‘pumpkin soufflé’ tea light from Simple Things; • learn dog tricks and enjoy agility demonstrations at Cricket’s Canine Country Club; • participate in creative tiedye and poetry workshops with Rri-joice Tie Dyes and Literacy Plus at the Bonnechere Caves; • enjoy soap making demonstrations at Opeongo Mountain Meadow Soap • take in maple syrup making at Mapleside Sugar Bush. An exciting addition to the 2011 event is the Rural Ramble passport, which are included in the event guide. Ramblers’ are encouraged to fill out the passport with a signature from a staff or volunteer at each site they visit. Completed passports can be dropped off at the last site visited each weekend and they will be entered into a draw for a prize pack featuring unique gifts from participating Rural Ramble sites and valued at over $500. The passports also include a spot for Ramblers to vote for their favourite Rural Ramble site. The site with the most votes (one per weekend) will be named ‘Rural Rambler’s Choice’. “The passport and the Rambler’s Choice Awards are fun examples of ways event organizers are working to keep the annual festival fresh and new,” said Mc-

Travis Fraser: club champion at Madawaska Golf Club KEVIN RYAN Madawaska Golf Club
Travis Fraser is the 2011 Men’s club champion at the Madawaska Golf Club. Fraser defeated defending Men’s club champion Perry Freda on the first hole of a sudden death playoff after both players finished the two-day event tied at even par 140. Fraser fired a second-day, tournament record score of 65 to go with his 75 on day one. Freda fired even par on both days to get into the playoff. Jon Freda opened the tournament with a one-under-par 69 to lead all day-one shooters. However, his second-day score of 73 left Jon at 142, which was two strokes off the pace. Gary Grainger finished in fourth position with a 146. The B flight champion for 2011 is Ken Ledgerwood who fired a total of 151, including a 72 on the opening day. Sean Riordan and Dean Dimonte tied for second place at 158 followed by Wayne Stiles, Ray Kulchyski and Rob Carruthers all at 161. Hayden Pleau captured the C flight championship with a twoday total of 170. Brent Mosley and Wayne Carty tied for second spot with a 172. Terry Smeltzer
finished in fourth with a 175, followed by Bob Sherrard with a 176 in fifth. Doug Carty captured D flight with a 178. Matt Oliver was alone in second spot with a 185, followed by Doug Neeley and John Kohli at 190. Ken Ledgerwood captured the low net Marcellus trophy for the event with a two-day net score of 125, which ties the low net score in the tournament’s history. Congratulations to all of the winners and to Ted Davies and El Strauss who organized the two-day event and the prize table, which was outstanding. Special thanks to some of the lady members who scored and spotted for the two days and to Martyn Munro and his staff for the exceptional course conditions. Congratulations to Ray Kulchyski who captured the Men’s match play championship with a hard fought victory over Jay Grainger. The next event on the Men’s tour is the closing Field day on Sept. 18. Remember to check out the website for all of the news and results from the club: www.madawaskagolf.com. Good luck to all of the golfers throughout the year.

BRIER DODGE

NEW LOOK Renfrew-Lanark league convener Kris Wylie was passed on the news at the end of the school year by the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA). Wylie is a football coach at Perth and District Collegiate Institute, a team that would have to travel almost 450 kilometres round trip, to play a game in Deep River. With gas prices rising, it was a tough cost for athletic departments to swallow. For most sports under the EOSSAA banner, Renfrew County and Lanark County are self-contained leagues, with the winner from each advancing to the EOSSAA championship. There will still be a Renfrew-Lanark champion, as the league will operate similar to Ottawa – with the east and west champion deciding who will represent the league at the National Capital Bowl. “We’re still going to have a LanarkRenfrew battle after our league winners have been determined,” Wylie said. “This definitely alleviates money issues, it’s become quite expensive.” In the Ontario University Athletic conference, made up of 10 teams, varsity football teams play eight games before playoffs. This season, with addition of three teams, the local high school season would feature a nine-game schedule. “As 20-year-olds, you might be able to handle it,” Wylie said. “It just became too much for teenagers.” He said the new alignment allows for more time between games, which gives players time to heal, train and learn new skills. Arnprior defensive coordinator Steve Staye saw the extreme of it, as he coached his team through a record number of games. “We played 13 games,” he said, noting that the in-class component can

Football is a sport where rivalries matter. But senior high school football fans will not see Arnprior square off against Almonte, or Renfrew and Carleton Place do battle in regular season action, as the league divides into Lanark and Renfrew county divisions. In the previously mixed Ottawa Valley and Lanark league, teams were beginning to play too many games in too short a season. Arnprior District High School played the most games of any high school team in Ontario last year on their way to winning the provincial title – with their championship game lucky number 13. League expansion, with Mackenzie High School in Deep River and Fellowes High School in Pembroke joining, along with the addition of Notre Dame Catholic High School in Carleton Place, has forced the decision to split the senior league. “We’ve just gotten too big as a league,” said Almonte District High School coach Chris Spratt. “We’ll miss each other for sure, but the bottom line was we were playing too many games in too short of a time, kids could get banged up.” The junior high school teams in Lanark and Renfrew will not split, and will play a six-game schedule this year.
also suffer. “It is too many, I think, and obviously they have an academic responsibility as well.” Not everyone will be happy with the new league, but money talks – and less spent on referees, equipment and transportation will make school athletic directors happier with their budgets. “I liked the big league,” Wylie admitted. “But as far as longevity for football and deciding enrollment, I think this is what’s best for all schools to prosper.” The league had to divide to play a shorter schedule, but Wylie said the new system of Renfrew and Lanark is not set in stone for future years. The Kingston league uses a different system to divide the schedule. A ranking system evaluated the last five years of play and ranked the teams accordingly. Wylie plans to travel to Kingston to see the schedule in action and evaluate what the best thing for the local league moving forward. “Football’s getting bigger and bigger,” Staye said. “[The change] surprised many of the coaches, but it makes sense.” Several coaches have echoed the sentiment that the division may allow for more Valley schools to add a football program. “We just grew, we grew into a bigger league, it’s good for football,” said Spratt. “Hopefully the Valley will have a few more teams.” The new-look league will take some time to grow on coaches and players, but traditions such as Turkey Bowl will still run deep. “It’ll take time, but the rivals are always here, they haven’t disappeared. They’re still intense,” Spratt said. This season, the Lanark senior league will include Almonte District High School, Carleton Place High School, Notre Dame Catholic High School, Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute, Perth and District Collegiate Institute, and St. John Catholic High School. PICKING UP THE PIECES
Grappling with suicidal thoughts leaves youth feeling isolated. Part one of our three-part series tells how realizing they aren’t alone can be like flicking on a light switch – and the tragedy that can happen without that illumination. LAURA MUELLER laura.mueller@metroland.com
W
illiam Ross is something of a magician. First, his sleight-of-hand tricks impressed his friends
at school. Eventually, he moved on to fooling staff and fellow patients at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario’s mental health ward. But before that, Ross tried to pull his trickery on Ottawa police officers, who had to cart him to CHEO in a squad car to prevent the amateur Houdini from escaping his handcuffs and harming himself. And lately, the 17-year-old Ottawa resident has been working magic on his own life, astounding family and friends with his seemingly supernatural ability to bounce back from the darkest deadend track. In less than a year, Ross went from what appeared to be a pretty well-adjusted teenager who loved BETA testing video games and cooking, to a shadow of himself, obsessed with compulsive thoughts of trying to end his life. And now, mere months later, he has rebounded, an outcome his mother, Suzanne Ross, could barely bring herself to dream of. Suzanne, who comprises a large part of her son’s support system, still lives by a phrase repeated to her by a relative of her own: “You can be cautiously optimistic when things are going better, knowing that there could still – and probably will – be slips and things that are going to happen,” Suzanne says. “It’s not going to happen overnight.” DIMMING THE LIGHTS By the same token, William didn’t get to that dark place – a deep depression he likens to all the lights being turned out – overnight. “Everything up until that point was like dimming out the lights,” he says. William says he really began to slide down the slippery slope to self destruction after last summer. Some romantic relationships that went foul didn’t help his tendencies towards obsessive compulsiveness and anxiety, William says. But it was surrounding himself with a social circle that turned out to be more focused on partying and backstabbing than trust and friendship kicked the process into high gear. He was partying too much. Peer pressure led to alcohol and “mild” drug use.
Photos by Laura Mueller
William Ross has made huge strides in tackling his demons since last summer, when he tried to take his own life and ended up at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario for treatment. Spray-paint art is a recent addition to William’s repertoire. Right, he creates a painting earlier this spring as a gift for his grandfather.
OUT OF THE DARKNESS A series about youth suicide Part 1: Two youths struggle with suicidal thoughts - with radically different outcomes “I’ve had a little bit of a shadowy, dark past,” he says. “Over time, things had just gotten worse.” When Suzanne looks back, she realizes that all the classic warning signs were there. Her son wasn’t sleeping at night, but he would sleep during all hours of the day – when he was home. Most of the time, he was out with friends – partying, although she didn’t know it. “I thought it was a normal progression – to give him a bit of independence,” she says. “He never gave me a reason not to trust him.” Eventually William lost the energy to do any of the activities he was so passionate about. He didn’t care to test out video and computer games to help work out the bugs before they hit the market. The sharp-witted teen’s interest in school waned. And most obviously
for Suzanne, her son completely stopped taking over the kitchen of their two-storey Orleans home to whip up a culinary masterpiece. “When I look back those are all signs,” she says. “If you notice a change in your child’s behaviour, pay attention to it, because it may be nothing, but in our case it was a clue.” The clues started long before William’s back-to-back visits to CHEO last autumn, which wasn’t his first visit to the hospital’s mental-health ward. In fact, it all started in the very home in which William still lives with his mother, father and brother. William’s spirit started to crack when he was only six, but it wasn’t until more than six years later that William finally admitted to his mother why. He had been raped by someone close to the family. By that point, William was already undergoing therapy for anxiety, a process that lasted three years. “I talked about how I didn’t really trust people; how I didn’t really trust myself,” he says. He thought releasing the secret helped him get over that hurdle, but looking back, he says he was wrong. His world continued to crumble. It wasn’t until last year, he began to pick up the pieces. By the end of the summer, William couldn’t force himself to stop fixating over harming himself. Every object, from ballpoint pens to
pieces of string, became weapons of self harm in William’s obsessive gaze. Luckily for William, it only took one attempt for him to recognize he needed help. Less than 12 hours after putting three thin, shallow cuts into his chest with an X-Acto knife, William was talking to a psychologist at CHEO. Before his family even clued in to what was happening in his head, William asked his mother to drive him to the hospital before he couldn’t stop himself from severely hurting himself. “I knew that I wanted it, but I didn’t want it,” he says. “It was like in the short term, I had wanted to hurt myself, but I knew that eventually I might not want this, and I just needed help.” William spent three weeks at CHEO

Unable to cope with his emotions, Jesse committed suicide at 17

esse Graham loved to win. And often, he did. On the soccer pitch, in the classroom, in excited debates or board games, Jesse found joy in things that pushed his limits. He loved to push back. Those who loved him smile as they remember his mile-wide competitive streak. They laugh to think of his firedup rants, notorious for leaving everyone in stitches. He was a fierce friend, a devoted son, and now a full year has passed since his death. The beam in Jesse’s basement bedroom was low, so it was easy enough for his father, Jeff, to lift up his dangling body and untie the noose. It wasn’t quite six in the morning by the time Jesse – brother to Katie, Zachary, Kelsie, Jarred and Lauren – was stretched out on the floor of their home in Balderson, Ont., with his mother and father bent over him, performing CPR. By the time the paramedics arrived, the boy who loved to win, who dreamed of becoming prime minister or practising law, was dead. “We never had a real inkling that Jesse was suicidal,” says his mother Shelly, who is a nurse. “He never once said to us ‘I’m depressed.’ He didn’t look depressed… he didn’t do all the things… the signs of suicide that you look for. He didn’t give anything away.” Randy Thompson, 19, and Jesse were best friends through high school, right up until Jesse hanged himself in the early hours of June 18, just days away from graduation, at the age of 17. “I went through a couple months of just numbness,” says Randy. He was right there to witness the changes in his friend. At 16, Jesse was a ball of fire. He was clean-cut, not into the same drinking and dosing scene as some of his peers. He went to youth group at his church every Thursday. He liked to hang out with the brainier kids. He liked debates, not chit-chat, and attacked them with the same ballistic energy that made his teacher hide the classroom dodge ball and his friends steer clear of him during soccer games. A year later, he wasn’t himself. His parents noticed it, his friends did too. He was angry. “He’s 17 and lots of boys get angry at 17, because they’re finding their way. So you try to give him space; give him enough room to kind of figure things out,” says Shelly. Obstacles multiplied and hope dwindled. Jesse kept his pain to himself. He never sought help, but he sought comfort elsewhere. Beer, liquor, cigarettes, pot, sometimes harder stuff. Jesse tried to get out of his own tormented head,

Shelly and Jeff Graham hold up a photo of their son Jesse who committed suicide just over a year ago. The Balderson couple hopes his story helps others in similar situations. but it made things worse. Jesse’s grades first started slipping as he began Grade 11. For a guy remembered as exceptionally bright, with test results placing him among the country’s most gifted kids, this was unusual. Shelly’s description of her son fits both a perfectionist and a buzzing mind. Nothing, even the simplest assignment, was worth handing in unless it was just right. Not long before, he used to cruise through the curriculum without a problem. But now he was lagging behind, and getting in trouble in the classroom to boot. What was happening? LOOKED LIKE DEFIANCE “We didn’t have a clue. It looked like laziness, it looked like defiance,” says Shelly. “We realize now it was none of the above. He was frustrated with himself and he didn’t know what was wrong with him.” Toward the end of his life, Jesse started to figure it out. After doing some research online, he announced to his family that he thought he had Attention Deficit Disorder. The family doctor concurred, and started him on Concerta, a psychostimulant similar to Ritalin. That was a couple of months before his death, says Shelly. ADD, says Shelly, was just part of his problems. The other part wouldn’t become known until after Jesse’s death, after his suicide note was published on the front page of a major daily newspaper. The Grahams’ phone rang one day, a few weeks after Jesse’s death. On the line was Louise Brazeau-Ward. Brazeau-Ward is an internationally-renowned expert on dyslexia. She started the Canadian Dyslexia Association, after witnessing her own son’s struggles with the condition. At Heritage Academy, the specialty school she runs in Aylmer, Que., she teaches kids how to overcome dyslexia. The article in the newspaper said your son had ADD, she said to Shelly, but why didn’t it mention his dyslexia? Dyslexia? The Grahams had never
suspected their son had the condition, which impairs ones ability to read and write. No one, not even his teachers, had noticed anything out of the ordinary. But there were signs, and you could see them in his suicide note. Lisa Taylor does screening and testing for the association. With her 20 years of experience in the field, they were brutally obvious. “I call them no-brainers,” she said in an interview at her Kanata office. Taylor says she spent two hours picking out possible indicators in Jesse’s note: capital letters reversed; hesitations, where Jesse started writing one letter and chose another; back-and-forth switches between cursive and printing. “At 17, you don’t reverse your B’s and D’s.” On behalf of the Canadian Dyslexia Association, Brazeau-Ward offered to test the Grahams’ two youngest children – Jarred, 12, and five-year-old Lauren – for dyslexia, as the condition is hereditary and often shared among family members. They made the offer “in Jesse’s honour,” declining payment for tests that can cost around $450 each. Turns out the hunch was right. The association’s testing found Jarred to be mildly dyslexic. After a separate assessment by the school board, he now uses computer programs to level the educational playing field. Lauren proved to be too young for test results to be conclusive, but her mother expects she’s not out of the woods yet. Meanwhile, their cousin was also identified as having similar learning disabilities, just as she was putting high school behind her. On the living room couch of the family home, Jeff can still quote the words from his son’s final message. “I hate myself,” Jesse wrote. “My life’s a lie.” “I believe the lie was he put on a happy face. He had all this pain inside,” says Shelly. Now that Jesse’s gone, no test can be done to prove it, but his parents believe he suffered from dyslexia, and that it helped pushed him over the edge. “It makes me wonder how many kids are out there that haven’t been picked up.”
before asking to be discharged, but a breakdown the next day sent him back to CHEO in a police car after authorities were called to his home when he threatened to harm himself. Help came in the form of talking. William went back to CHEO, and through the Children and Youth - Specialized Psychiatric and Mental Health Services program (a partnership with the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre), he dedicated himself to tackling his demons. There, he tried everything. From counselling to art therapy to deep breathing, William says he was open to anything. “I was tired of fighting myself,” he says. He stayed on that track after he left CHEO and started a stint in the outpatient program at the Royal Ottawa. For three months, he made daily treks to the Royal to attend family therapy, individual therapy, stress therapy, to learn calming techniques, meditation and different ways of coping. But most importantly, he was able to connect with other people who were in the process of overcoming their own issues. “It was the talking – it was the other people, and it was knowing I’m not alone,” William says. “Knowing there are other people going through different issues, other people going through similar issues, other people going through the same issues. “Knowing there are other problems, problems that are worse and problems that are – not necessarily better, but different – I learned that I’m not alone, and that was the biggest thing.” Now, more than a year after he hit rock bottom, William says he has a new definition of “normal.” Knowing that he is just one of many people dealing with mental illness has made all the difference. And now he thinks of mental illness as what it is – just one type of the many ailments that may strike a person in his or her lifetime. It was when people stopped treating him differently that he was able to make progress, he says. Just having people there to listen – not judge, offer advice, or give opinions – made his road to recovery possible. William says he doesn’t have any regrets today because the experience helped shape him and make him a stronger person. But that could have been much different if he had succeeded in his attempts to kill himself. “If I had killed myself, I would have somehow gotten myself back to life so I could kill myself again for doing that. That’s how stupid it was,” he says. When he thinks back to that point in his life, he often reminds himself – and others going through a similar ordeal: “No matter how bad your situation is, you’re always comfortable somewhere.” Getting to the comfortable place isn’t impossible, William says, and he is living proof.

Gill show tribute to county’s 150th Burnstown sculptor Richard Gill’s fall show Oct. 1 to 10 displays his ongoing fascination with the history of area settlements. Renfrew County’s 150th anniversary has compelled him to document and preserve some images of lost landscapes and present day landmarks that dot the surrounding countryside where he has resided since 1972. Relentless research of archival material has provided him with some of the visual details necessary to conceive historical images that depict the early explorers, settlers and communities, the days of the big timber, riverboats on the Ottawa River, and the K & P Railway, to note just a few. A brief journey to Jamaica inspired a special series of works that form an exotic contrast to the local subject matter. These works capture the splendour of old plantations and the captivating character, colourful culture and endearing nature of the people native to the Island. Gill has spent most of his adult life in Canada honing his skills as a full time sculptor and craftsman, which has resulted in the beautifully executed detailed works rendered in clay that
are his hallmark. His fall show opens Saturday, Oct. 1 at Bittersweet Gallery in Burnstown. It continues daily to Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Klics Ice Cream Parlour & Internet Cafe opens this Saturday at 128 John St., across from O’Brien Theatre. Angela Yach and her mother Bonnie Labelle got the name from the clicking sound of a computer’s keyboard. They plan to have two computers in the
shop. Folks will also be able to make their own specialty coffees while enjoying ice cream. “We want it to be a fun place for families,” Yach said. “There isn’t anywhere you can just go and talk and have a nice time with plenty of space.” Klics will be open seven days a week, mostly from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays it will open until 9 p.m.

NEIGHBOURHOOD BBQ BASH Campanale Homes hosted a barbecue in its Riverwood Estates Community in Arnprior Sept. 10. The annual event began four years ago as a way for the company to thank clients who have purchased homes and those living in the community. This year’s event included a raffle that benefitted Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital’s Partners in Caring campaign. At left, Campanale Homes vice-president Vince Campanale, left, joins barbecue chefs Matthew Finne and Cory Fulford for a photo. At right, siblings Hailey and Nathan Kneebone will be joining the community in March when they move to Arnprior with their parents Vickie and Gavin. Photos by Sherry Haaima

I love the way each season brings a new set of sounds. Winter’s silence is broken by the rifle cracks of branches freezing in the night and the soft warbles of finches celebrating the glow of the warming morn. Early spring sunsets are alive with the booming hoots of Barred Owls and the penetrating choruses of frogs and toads. And summer brings the lively dawn concerts of thrushes and warblers. Well, those seasons and sounds have come and gone, and we now slip into the colourful embrace of the autumn. But the fall is not without sound and, in fact, one of the greatest symphonies is now underway. Joining the Field Crickets

are black, Tree Crickets are pale green and have long legs, small heads, and paddle-shaped wings held flat over their back. This one was perched in the entrance of a curled leaf, its lovely green wings fully open and held upright over its head. They were rapidly vibrating back and forth, their thick veins on their inner edges rubbing together and creating the distinctive high-pitched trill. I watched with fascination as the little fellow played its instrument, using the curled leaf as an amplifier. Apparently some species chew holes in leaves to achieve the same effect. Incidentally, only the males sing and they do so to attract a mate. The next night I heard the raspy song of a Katydid rising
from the garden. Under the glow of a house light I could see the large green grasshopper perched on a plant stem. I set up my telescope so that I could watch from a distance and not disturb it. It soon performed by, like the Tree Cricket, rubbing together the inner edges of its wings. These bear zipper-like structures that produce the insect’s raspy, name-giving song. The concertos of Tree Crickets and Katydids are performed for the benefit of the female ear. However, female Katydids also stridulate, but their answers are much briefer. I guess it doesn’t require a lot of effort to play “yes!” The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

Teachers hit books before students at workshops LYNN DENAULT Co-ordinator of elementary programs
As parents and students were getting ready for the first day of school, many teachers were also busily preparing for a new school year. Educators from across Renfrew County had the opportunity to participate in a variety of voluntary, local professional development sessions funded by the School Achievement Division of the Ministry of Education. The two-day workshops have been offered regionally across the province since 2004. As always, there was great interest shown as more than 100 teachers, principals, and educational assistants attended one or more workshops. Participants included employees of the Renfrew County Catholic and Renfrew County public district school boards,l as well as recent Faculty of Education graduates who are anxious to learn more about current research-based strategies and practices. The sessions took place from Aug. 22 to 31 in Renfrew and
Pembroke. Presenters included curriculum and board personnel from both local English-language school boards. Workshop topics included: • effective teaching strategies in reading and writing in various subject areas; • teaching math through prob-
lem-solving and planning using the ‘big ideas’ of differentiated instruction for all students and co-operative learning in the classroom. The sessions allowed educa-

Driver error has been the cause of several collisions in the area this summer. As a result, the OPP is encouraging drivers to refocus their attention on driving when behind the wheel, and nothing else. Many drivers have become cavalier with their driving and multi-task while in the vehicle, say police. Driving is a skill which required your full attention. “Driver error often results in no consequence, you hit the shoulder and correct. But driver error can sometimes result in serious or fatal consequences. Drifting into oncoming traffic while reaching for something can take your life, or someone else’s.” The OPP stress that every time you get into the driver’s seat of a vehicle, you need to take the task seriously. The responsibility of operating a motor vehicle on today’s busy roads needs to be emphasized, they say. “It’s a great responsibility not to be taken lightly. We must all do our parts to create safer driving conditions with responsible driving practices. “Drive time is not play time, lunch time, or reading time, it’s drive time. Drive carefully and you’ll drive again tomorrow.”

Canadian Pickers headed for the Ottawa Valley DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com
Dust off those antiques and sharpen up your bargaining skills because Sheldon Smithens and Scott Cozens, the Canadian Pickers, are heading to the Ottawa area. The pickers are not sure if they will be winding down the back roads of Lanark or Renfrew counties, or at a flea market in the Ottawa suburbs, but the History Television stars are coming to town to kick some tires, and name a price. “I don’t think we’re exactly sure where we’re going,” admitted Cozens, during a telephone interview from Calgary, Alta. “We’ll take a flyer or go to a flea market, or go knock on some doors.” They are scheduled to be in the greater Ottawa area from Thursday, Sept. 22 to Tuesday, Sept. 27. If you think you have something valuable enough to land you a spot on the show, they are encouraging you to let them know. “If you are interested in being on Canadian Pickers, and have lots of vintage items, memorabilia, collectibles, or antiques to sell for cash, then let us know,” stated a press release. show up in your driveway, don’t break out the mop and broom to tidy up. “If it’s organized and neat, chances are it’s going to cost more,” said Cozens. “We’re (used to) crawling through people’s stuff.” The Canadian Pickers show has a loyal following, but also traces its roots to shows like American Pickers, Pawn Stars, and even the more genteel Antiques Roadshow. “We are appreciative of our fans,” said Smithens. “You can’t go into a Tim Hortons in this country without being recognized.” “We’ve never had anyone come up to us that we didn’t appreciate having come up to us,” said Cozens. Sometimes their fans’ devotion knows no bounds, with one family waiting in the pouring rain, under a tree, for four hours for a chance to meet them. The pair have their own theories as to why their show is so popular. “I think there are now a lot of younger people who are getting in to their (relatives’) estates,” said Smithens. The two men came into the picking business through their families. Smithens’ grandparents were in the antiques and auction business, while Cozens’ grandmother and mother were collectors. “I am more a buyer and Sheldon is more a seller,” said Cozens. “Thank God there is that bal-

COADY, Sean Douglas In loving memory of our dear son, who tragically was taken too soon, September 16, 2006. Every day our hearts are filled with sorrow, Wondering how we will make it through tomorrow. Our time with you was precious, And the memories we have are too. The love we share together keeps us close to you. Maybe we cannot touch your hand or see your smiling face, Maybe we cannot hear your voice or feel your warm embrace, But, there is something we will always have, Tucked safely in our hearts, Our love for you… your love for us… will never let us part. “Those we love stay with us always, locked in our hearts as long as our life remains.” Love, Mom and Dad

Time passes… the grief remains, but I know that you would say… Keep my memory with you, For memories never die. I will always be there with you, When you look up in the sky. When your heart is heavy And you feel you are alone, Reach deep down inside yourself For your heart is now my home. I will always be there with you I will never go away I will live on within your heart Each and every day. “In my mind I see you and in my heart I keep you…” Love, Erin
