FAIR, FESTIVAL
It’s gearing up to be an exciting August in Arnprior with plans for the Arnprior Fair and White Pine Festival in high gear. 12, 15
A potentially record-breaking heat wave is raising concerns there could be an encore this week of Sunday’s destructive wind and lightning storm. It is also prompting health officials to urge people, especially seniors, to take steps to protect themselves against the high heat and humidity. With the temperature predicted to hit 37C today (Thursday), there is the potential of a repeat of the severe thunderstorm that overturned trees, knocked out power and flattened the main stage at Bluesfest Sunday evening. The cottagers of Marshall’s Bay, down river from Arnprior in the Galetta area, were particularly hard hit Sunday. “I haven’t seen anything like it,” said Hydro One’s Paul Murphy, who was called in to help restore power to the stricken area. “It looked like a bomb went off.” There were also trees uprooted in several Arnprior area properties, including a 35-year-old weeping willow at Gail Parsons’ home at the end of Moore Photo by John Carter Street in McNab-Braeside. Gail Parsons is dwarfed by the large weeping willow tree that Sunday’s violent storm uprooted on her lawn on Moore Street in McNab-Braeside. It was one of many trees See ‘HEAT’, Page 4 brought down in the strong winds that evening. For more, see Page 4.

McNab-Braeside residents, you are now the proud owners of 92 acres of prime real estate. Now what would you like to do with it? Mayor Mary Campbell announced the property acquisition at the July 19 meeting and said council will be asking ratepayers what they’d like to see done with

the land on Russett Drive near the intersection of highways 17 and 508. “It’s a gorgeous property, the Dochart Creek runs right through it,” said Campbell. “It’s a valuable property with its proximity to 17 and the future Glasgow Station turnoff on 17. It’s in the township’s best interest to capture that investment while we can. ”
A notorious undertow on the Mississippi River below the five-span bridge in Pakenham has claimed another victim. Michael Walsh of Arnprior drowned Sunday after he slipped off a rock on the northeast side of the river. The 52-year-old was on a family outing.
