Arnprior mayor reflects on first year in office DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
CELEBRATING YOUTH Greig Burnie was the guest speaker when the Town of Arnprior and the Optimist Club joined to honour the town’s young athletes at the 15th annual Arnprior Youth Athletic Appreciation Night. 5
One year to the day after the 2010 Ontario municipal elections, Arnprior Mayor David Reid reflected on the ups and downs of his first foray into politics. Sitting behind the mayor’s desk in a smallish office upstairs at town hall Tuesday, he reminded that due to electronic voting irregularities Arnprior’s elections took an additional day to finish. Despite the shaky start, he wasn’t surprised by the other 364 days. “It’s gone pretty much as expected,” he said. “It was essentially a lot of observation, listening, learning and reflecting.” Councillors – almost half of whom entered politics for the first time for this term – made a conscious decision to proceed that way. To not react to “public perception,”
as Reid phrases it, but to base decisions on complete knowledge. Critics have said council could move quicker on some issues. Reid said next year will see more tangible results. “That phase is complete. We have a lot better grasp,” he said. “We’ll be taking on a lot more responsibilities.” He is referring specifically to development. Reid, a former developer himself, said a lot of work done behind the scenes this year will pay off for developers and town residents as a whole starting in 2012. He is confident the town could reach an optimal level, perhaps with an eventual population of 10,000, which would ease the burden on current ratepayers, provide local jobs and boost town revenue; all without too much more infrastructure investments. The top bureaucrat at Arnprior town hall was let go on Oct. 20. Larry Donaldson, who was chief administrative officer (CAO) for more than 10 years, guiding the corporation through rough patches such as last year’s human rights tribunal and the water billing fiasco, said the new
council wants to go in another direction. “I respect council’s desire to head in a new direction and wish the Town of Arnprior the very best in the future,” Donaldson said in an email to the Chronicle-Guide. “It’s a great town with a great past and greater future,” wrote Donaldson. After year-long learning curve, mayor ready to act Continued from front However, the addendum has him saying growth must be sustained and in keeping with the town’s character. There is much for new councillors to digest in their first year: training courses, how the bureaucracy operates, staff and council’s responsibilities, various procedures. Reid’s background is in small business where he made most of the decisions on his own. He admits there is more red tape in public affairs, and says he understands the reasoning for it, but still gets frustrated. And the hold-up isn’t with lazy or obstinate bureaucrats, as some in the private sphere would suggest. If anything, some departments over the long term could use additional resources to keep up with demand. “Staff all work hard,” he said. “Things just move slower. I understand the reasons for it, but it’s frustrating at times.” Part of his campaign messaging was that town hall hired too many outside consultants; that more could be done by staff in order to cut down costs. He has “modified” that position somewhat, saying small municipalities can’t keep expensive resources on hand at all times. “My mind has changed somewhat on that,” he said. “Smaller governments don’t have the ability to react to every situation without outside guidance.” It’s possible to draw at least surface similarities between Arnprior’s new mayor and Ottawa’s. Both swept in on a wave of anti-status quo sentiment. Both take over on a promise to end
previous strife and disarray. But Ottawa’s Jim Watson is accused of suppressing dissension in the name of efficiency. Is the same true in Reid’s case? It is true some councillors have little to say durDAVID REID ing council meetings, but is that reluctant acceptance at work or is it genuine agreement with the leader’s direction? Reeve Walter Stack was a member of the last council. He clashed at times with others on council. Yet he has nothing but good to say about the new mayor’s first year in office. “I think he shows extraordinary leadership and brings real cohesiveness,” Stack said. “For a new guy on the block, he’s doing very well. Very well.” Stack, who was encouraged to take a run for the top job last year, indicated that Reid is as open-minded as they come. “He listens to everybody’s concerns and everybody’s point of view.” Not much appears to surprise Reid, but his view of the media’s role in covering municipal politics did just that during his transition from private citizen to politician. Overall, though, he said he doesn’t agonize over what appears in newspapers. However, he wants to see more ef-
fective messaging from the town’s per- haven’t changed one bit.” spective, which may mean the creation of a communications-marketing component. LIFESTYLE CHANGES On the personal front, Reid said if the job negatively affected his home life there is only one solution. “My wife understands what is happening and agrees, and at the end of the day if it affects my family life I would not continue,” he said. “My family comes first, and I expect anyone else would say the same.” As for being elevated to the level of small town celebrity status – a term that causes Reid to bristle – he said attending community events is a bit difficult for him. He is admittedly a shy person, but enjoys promoting events and seeing that his title might help draw a few more participants. One doesn’t get the impression he attends as a way to garner votes for the next election. He indicates some folks on the street treat him with a touch more admiration, which makes him “uncomfortable.” Others say things in jest, which he doesn’t mind at all. “That’s fine. But I

Both area mayors say they compromised in order to finish service-agreements talks before December’s budget season. The ground rules that follow were approved by Arnprior council, but hadn’t yet been considered by McNab-Braeside’s. Town of Arnprior Mayor David Reid won’t have ad hoc committees from both sides meeting in private at the outset. The mayors will have a second private meeting before ad hoc committees of one council, one staffer and one advisory member will meet in private. Then recommendations will be brought back to both councils for final deliberation in public meetings. McNab-Braeside Township Mayor Mary Campbell won’t have council-tocouncil public meetings from start to finish, if her group agrees to this format. The service agreements set out the township tax dollars used to pay for McNab-Braeside residents’ recreation use at Nick Smith Centre (currently about $102,000), for library use ($36,000), and for five township users of water and eight of sewer. At their initial private meeting, the
mayors agreed the funding formula must be accountable to both municipalities and based on the total number of individual users from each municipality. Campbell has long argued that basing funding, for instance, on library circulation numbers is misleading. An Arnprior resident might take out one book and return it in a couple of days. A township resident living in, say, Burnstown, might load up on books while in town. Her preference to have Arnprior adopt a user agreement similar to that of Renfrew’s will be examined by Reid. However, Reid insists the town will be responsible for water-sewer up to the borderline, and either the township or property owners will pay for infrastructure beyond that. Wrangling over how to proceed has dragged on for months, but Reid is confident all has been straightened out. “I want to strongly reinforce the desires of myself, Mayor Campbell and both councils that these negotiations be conducted respectfully and amicably so as not to split our respective municipalities,” he said in a prepared statement to Arnprior council at Monday’s meeting. Reeve Walter Stack said it appeared Campbell had an “about face from her position” by giving up public negotiations.

Although attendance was sparse at the session, there were many intriguing ideas thrown around on how to encourage people to recycle more and save themselves (and the townships) money. Copies of a critique of several proposed options presented by Smith and Gerry Lalonde of Stantec are available at the township offices. The public has until Friday, Nov. 4 to provide input on the proposals that range from changing the frequency of pick-up to using larger and varied blueboxes. It was a historic moment for McNabBraeside township when council and those involved in the municipality’s broadband initiative celebrated its completion last week, said Mayor Mary Campbell. “It’s quite a step forward in our economic development,” said Campbell. “You can’t attract business, you can’t attract people, unless they can get on the Internet.” The township hosted the Oct. 18 event to mark the end of the Rural Connections project, which Campbell described as a “powerful exercise.” When she first took office in 2006, access to high-speed Internet was one of the community’s most pressing concerns, Campbell explained. Rural Connections was a joint venture between the province of Ontario, McNab-Braeside, Admaston-Bromley and Bell Aliant. DSL technology was used to connect communities including Russett Drive, Sand Point, Braeside, White Lake, Douglas and Burnstown. Arnprior saluted many of its young sports heroes at the Nick Smith Centre Saturday night. In what has become quite an event, the 15th annual Arnprior Youth Athletic Appreciation Night was held in the auditorium. Vaughan Glover, who co-chaired the festivities with Arnprior recreation director Glenn Arthur, said in the beginning, no one ever thought the night would become this successful. “We had 13 athletes (the first year) who won gold, silver and bronze provincially and internationally. We thought it would be a one-time thing,” said Glover, who came up with the idea of having a youth recognition night. He noted the event suddenly became a yearly affair and has never stopped. “This year, we have 25 athletes who have won gold, silver or bronze provincially or internationally,” Glover observed. Glover thanked the Arnprior Optimist Club for keeping the night going year-after-year. “They supported it right from the beginning.” It’s not always the kids who win, but those who show dedication, determination, sportsmanship, commitment, leadership who are also honoured on this night, explained Arthur. Among those recognized were several Canadian and provincial competitors, in-
cluding Teah Marshall, Raymond Clarke, Johanna Enright, Sarina Geisser, Stefan Geisser and Collin Bottomley in karate; Special Olympians Terrence Crabtree and Darryl Clark; and the Arnprior Axemen floor hockey team, bronze medal winners at the Special Olympics provincial championships. Crabtree and Clark have been selected to play on the Ontario floor hockey team in the Special Olympics National Winter Games next February in Edmonton. The two Arnprior athletes were also picked up by the Brockville team to play in the provincial championships. They won the gold medal, and were selected to play in the National Winter Games. WORDS OF WISDOM Guest speaker Greig Burnie, born in Arnprior in 1981, noted that he loved two sports, hockey and golf. But it is golf at which he makes a living today as the professional and general manager of the Arnprior Golf Club at Sand Point. He has been there since 2010, after turning pro and joining the Canadian Professional Golfers Association and being employed at two Ottawa golf clubs since 1999. He told the mainly young audience of his route to success. Burnie said teamwork is important. He said not only does working as a team contribute to success, but many of those same people become friends for life.
Burnie said perseverance is vital. “I didn’t achieve my goal the first time. I spent long hours on the golf course. It takes practice and dedication.” Burnie said every kid has a dream, and at a young age, he once wondered what it would be like to manage a golf course, and through desire, this dream become a reality. He said, as important as anything, have fun when you play. “Play will always be a huge part of my life. I encourage all of you to cherish play as much as possible.” Piper Bob Smith led all the athletes into the gymnasium while Mayor David Reid offered congratulations on behalf of the Town of Arnprior.

County of Renfrew Paramedic Shawn Doyle was found not guilty of sexual assault in an Ottawa Courtroom Tuesday. Doyle, of the Arnprior area, worked out of the Renfrew Paramedic station. He will be able to return to active duty once he goes through a routine check to ensure his skills are still up to par. Doyle has been doing administrative duties since April 20, 2010, when the County of Renfrew was informed that the Ottawa Police Service had received a complaint on behalf of a female patient. Upon notification of the complaint, the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service initiated an internal investigation of the complaint and fully co-operated with Ottawa City Police during the investigation. In the interest of all parties concerned, Doyle was removed from front-line patient care pending the completion of the investigation and court procedures. Ottawa Police Service proceeded with one charge of sexual assault on May 11, 2010. As a result of the not guilty verdict, Mike Nolan, County of Renfrew Chief of Paramedic Services, expressed his satisfaction with the process. “On behalf of the Paramedic Service, I want to thank all parties involved in this very stressful situation. Both Mr. Doyle and his colleagues displayed professionalism and integrity throughout the last year. “It is regrettable that a County of Renfrew Paramedic faced this legal hurdle, but I am pleased with the outcome of the trial.” Nolan said the case underlines the “element of risk of liability and misperception” facing Paramedics. As a result of the not guilty verdict, the County of Renfrew will begin the reinstatement process of Doyle to full duties, which Nolan expects to be complete in a few weeks.

100,” she adds, noting that it didn’t dawn on her until about a month ago that her 100th birthday, then, was only two months away. Relatives explain that because of the chances of poor weather in late November, they decided to have her party for turning 100, now. Many of them travelled three or four hours to attend. On the table by her side was a plaque from Prime Minister Stephen Harper offering Dolly best wishes and warmest congratulations on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

Each session will combine group discussions and creative expression through journalling and scrapbooking. The program begins Nov. 2 and runs on Wednesdays (Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and Dec. 7) at 168 Third Ave. in Arnprior. The program runs from 3 to 5 p.m. and the cost is $150 for six weeks, etc.

The recent focus on youth suicide and bullying means families are finally starting to talk about these important issues, says Jen Charbonneau of Arnprior. “There has to be a focus on mental health,” says Charbonneau. “It’s everywhere. We have to stop pretending it’s not happening in our town or in our schools.” Charbonneau, the Arnprior mother with a mission to help girls recognize that their true beauty comes from within, is the creator of So Glad 2 Be Me, a healthy body image/self esteem workshop for girls ages eight to 12 years. She is now offering a revised version of So Glad 2 Be Me as an after-school program for girls in grades 5-8. She has worked the program to suit a bit of an older age group than the usual so Glad 2 Be Me • 2011 Reader’s Choice Award Winner!!!

Grove development decision disappointing To the Editor:

ooking out for the vampires and ghosts, witches and zombies, and keeping them safe from all the “normal” people sounds like the role of a character some sort of sci-fi horror movie. But that’s a role that everyone should take this Halloween, regardless of what costume you may be sporting. Halloween is the night of the year that almost every child in the community can excitedly run from house to house, collecting candy. That makes it important for drivers to remember it’s very easy for a small child, loaded up on Halloween sugar, to run into the street without first looking. Anyone driving on Halloween evening needs to be aware that this isn’t a regular night of the week, and while normal safety precautions, such as not texting-and-driving, should always be followed, it is especially true on Oct. 31. Imagine how easy it would be to turn sending a quick text on the phone into a disaster if the look down means to miss seeing your four-year-old neighbour, dressed in head-to-toe as a vampire in a black costume, dart into the street. Nothing could be scarier. It’s important for parents to remember traffic risks as well, and incorporate reflective material or a bright colour whenever possible. Another option for trick-or-treaters’ parents is a flashlight, equipping kids with a solo headlight of their own. The best way to convince kids to keep close to the houses is to promote route optimization – the less walking, the quicker the route, and the more houses the kids can get to. Kids, parents and drivers all need to take responsibility this Monday evening. Halloween should be a night to remember for all the right reasons.

Grove wetland is crucial for survival of endangered species and other animals that call the Grove Home. I cannot believe with the exception of Mark Willmer that this council and mayor can put dollars ahead of the eco-system and homes of animals, some of them endangered, just because one property owner, who owns mostly swamp property, needs to develop it at any cost. Well people ask yourselves why Mark Willmer always gets the most votes at election time. Well, it’s because he puts common sense to use when making every decision. That’s why we the taxpayers have such faith in him. We voted in pretty much a whole new council and mayor. I for one did not expect them to turn a blind eye on the rezoning of this property when so much is at stake. To say I am disappointed would be an understatement. Oh well, I guess the need for money got the best of council and mayor as you can’t send tax bills to a swamp. Janet Sabourin Arnprior
National gun registry about to be murdered
Home school students included in fire prevention program
To the Editor: There is a pre-meditated murder about to happen in Canada. It is the murder of the long gun registry. The long gun registry is a public safety tool – a woman’s safety tool and it is about to be killed. We watch, we wait and we do nothing. Imagine how many gun licenses were refused on the basis of background checks triggered when men went to register their weapons - more than 1,500 in a three-year period. The majority of refused licences were denied because of a deemed risk to others. We watch, we wait and we do nothing. Imagine how many women and children in Renfrew County are threatened in our homes with a gun.
Established in 1879
After 20 years of listening to women I can assure you that there are many. Rural and farm women who experience violence in the home describe a cycle of intimidation with guns. That intimidation makes it very difficult to report abuse. When reports are made and police come, now they will have no idea if there are weapons in the home. Violence against women and children is a very real and serious issue in Renfrew County and women and children’s lives are on the line. Femicide is a very real issue. We watch, we wait and we do nothing. There is a murder in Canada about to happen. And there won’t be enough roses in this country to mark the loss. As Fire Chief for the Township of McNab-Braeside, I would like to acknowledge the strong support of the Chronicle-Guide in our recent fire prevention and recruitment initiatives. The media is a powerful partner that helps to spread our safety message throughout our community. We are grateful for the support and coverage. A recent article covered home schooled children visiting the Braeside Fire Station. The article indicated that about a dozen children attended. In actual fact, there were 23 children and nine adults who attended, for a total of 32. Also in the article, Karen Barsoski was identified as the fire department spokeswoman. Karen is the department’s Fire Prevention and Education Officer. As a father of two home schooled children, I was approached by another family and asked about Fire Prevention Week activities. As there are a large number of home schooled families in this area, a real need to include them in the same fire prevention programs as offered at the schools, was the impetus for this very successful session, which will become an annual event during Fire Prevention Week. How could the apple thieves be so cruel? To the Editor: I am writing because I am totally bothered. You see something has happened that may seem tripe and insignificant to some, but to me this story has totally broken my heart and has caused me great anger. And moreover, it has crushed someone so important to me, my grandfather. Let me provide a tiny bit of background. My grandfather is a gentle and caring man. He is a proud Canadian veteran who has laid his life on the line for this country. He is a pillar in this community (even having a street named after his nobility). He is a pure example of honour, patience, peace and love. As people age, obviously health conditions deteriorate in ways that can be unimaginable (and occasionally quite rapid). However, in life as we all know, along with trials there are those sweet moments that deflect the sometime painful reality that some may encounter daily. To my grandfather, his petite yet beautiful apple tree was just that (a diversion from a slow daily reality). He dedicated much care and attentiveness to this tree. So, I am sure you can well imagine its loveliness and the delight it brought to this lone man. As he does each autumn, grandpa enjoys watching the tree blossom with ripe and delectable fruits of his labour. He watches the beauty of creation flock to his tree (such a picturesque scene for this gentle and aged soul).
The one thing he anticipates is picking the apples to share with his family, giving him immense delight. On a recent morning, my grandpa awoke to discover an unknown person(s) trespassed into his backyard and stripped the beautiful apple tree bare, leaving one sole apple. This act only reduced my grandfather to tears, standing in sadness and disbelief. When I heard of this distasteful incident (and how it caused my delicate 82-year-old grandfather to weep with sadness), I immediately became enraged. I am not trying to sound preachy or pious. But seriously? Why? How unnecessary. To the individual(s) who stole apples and joy from my grandfather: did you all of a sudden have an overwhelming craving for apples? If you really needed the apples, he would have given them to you without hesitation, as my grandfather has such a giving nature. Have we become so complacent and desensitized to right and wrong that we allow these types of shameless deeds? Is this really what our community is about? Not only am I infuriated, but I am extremely disappointed. Perhaps I have a romanticized idea of our community. But I don’t care. If you see or hear something that is wrong, say something or do something. Don’t be a pushover. Let’s stop these unkind acts from poisoning our town. Danah-Lee Krieger Braeside

MP Cheryl Gallant celebrates the demise of the long-gun registry with MP Candace Hoeppner in the House of Commons. Members Bill 391, an act to amend the criminal code and the firearms act (repeal of long-gun registry). We were defeated by a mere two votes in our last Parliament, against the expressed wishes of responsible Canadian gun owners. “I promised that if we got our majority in Parliament, the registry would be scrapped. That day has come. Promise made, promise kept.” Gallant said the Harper Government has always been clear that by eliminating the “wasteful and ineffective” long-gun registry, the government can
instead focus its efforts on measures “that actually tackle crime and make our streets and communities safe,” she said. “Our government will continue to uphold our commitment to effective gun control measures that help keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and off our streets,” Gallant maintained. The legislation introduced Tuesday will not only eliminate the registry but also destroy all previous registration records. The bill will: • repeal the requirement to register non-restricted firearms (long-guns); • provide for the destruction of all records pertaining to the registration of long-guns currently contained in the Canadian Firearms Registry and under the control of the chief firearms officers; • maintain controls over restricted and prohibited firearms. Under the proposed reforms, firearms owners will still require a valid firearm licence to purchase or possess firearms and to purchase ammunition. They will also be required to undergo police background checks, pass a firearms safety training course and comply with firearms safe storage and transportation requirements. In addition, individuals will continue to be required to register prohibited and restricted firearms, such as handguns.

Mentorship program launched with aim of having youth keep hunting traditions alive This fall 15 local youth had an opportunity to participate in a hunt through a new program being offered by the several Renfrew County hunting groups, including the Arnprior Fish and Game Club. The purpose of the program is to change the trend that sees the number of hunters dramatically dropping. The effort is being sponsored by the Renfrew County Stewardship Council, Arnprior Fish and Game Club, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the Pembroke Outdoors Sportsman Club, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The groups asked themselves that in a world full of computer and video games, who is going to continue the hunting tradition? “The recruitment of new hunters is a significant challenge in ensuring a hunting heritage is maintained and carries on to future generations. “People who keep track of these kinds of things say that young people do not explore outdoor pursuits today. Experts see a decline in the number of youth participating in wildlife activities (hunting, fishing, viewing). “Kids are simply too busy with things like organized sports, or are distracted by television, video games, computers, and social networking. “What does this lead to? Well, for example, the number of Canadian duck hunters has dropped from 500,000 in the late 1970s to 135,000 today. This has also led to a reduced appreciation for and understanding of the natural world and the importance of hunting in wildlife management and conservation.” The program objectives are to change the trend by providing youth with:

The Arnprior Fish and Game Club is one of the organizations sponsoring the sending of youth on a hunt in an effort to stop the trend that sees hunter numbers dropping. 1) A greater understanding and appreciation of the importance of wildlife conservation and management and the contribution of hunters to these initiatives. 2) Knowledge about the historical and contemporary importance of Canada’s hunting heritage and wildlife management and conservation. 3) Basic knowledge about biology, wildlife ecology, and wildlife habitats. 4) Hunter Education and Firearms Safety training, mentorship, and certification. 5) Opportunities to participate in many hands-on activities including blind building and placement, dog training, decoy placement, and the cleaning and cooking of wild game. Youth also had the opportunity to get out on a morning waterfowl hunt with their mentors. The program would not have been available without the dedication of many volunteers willing to share their time, expertise and passion for hunting with youth as well as the generosity of local sponsors.

Let’s celebrate. Long-time long-gun registry foe Cheryl Gallant agrees there should be a celebration in the Valley to mark its imminent elimination. “Hunters and sportsmen have been telling me we should plan a special celebration here in the Ottawa Valley to mark the demise of the long-gun registry,” said Gallant in a news release this week. “I encourage people to contact my office with their suggestions.” On Tuesday in the House of Commons, the Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP joined her Conservative colleagues in announcing the ending of the Long-Gun Registry Act. “Since the day I was first elected, way back in November of 2000, I have been committed to scrapping the Liberal/NDP long-gun registry,” said Gallant. “There have been many naysayers along the way who said it would not be done. This proves just how wrong they were. “I appreciate the support that the hunters and farmers and recreational sportsmen have given me over the years. This Bill is for them,” she said. “Two years ago, my MP colleague, Candice Hoeppner, introduced Private

Police share Halloween safety advice Local OPP detachments have issued a list of Halloween safety tips for parents and caregivers. Police note Halloween can be an exciting time for children and with the distraction of candy and costumes, safety rules can easily be forgotten. In fact, research shows that distractions can increase a child’s chances of being struck by a car. Check out these simple tips to keep Halloween night a safe night for all: 1. Children under the age of nine should be accompanied by an adult or responsible older child since they lack the developmental skills to cross the street on their own. This is a year-round tip that will help keep your child safe while you share good pedestrian habits and pass on a legacy of safety-minded behaviour. 2. Teach your child to stop at the curb, look left, right and left again, and to listen for oncoming traffic. This vital skill is especially important when children are distracted and excited. Never rely on traffic signals alone use your eyes and ears to make sure it’s safe to cross.
3. It’s unsafe to cross between parked cars or other obstacles – always cross at crosswalks, street corners or intersections. Many injuries occur when children run out between parked cars, but even at intersections it’s vital that children practice tip #2. 4. Stay on the sidewalk or path when walking from house to house and if there is no sidewalk, walk beside the road, facing traffic so drivers can see you. From a very young age, children can be taught that roads are for cars and sidewalks are for kids. If your community has no sidewalks, walking beside the road at night can be very dangerous – adult accompaniment and flashlights are a must, regardless of the child’s age. 5. Select costumes with bright colours to increase your child’s visibility and choose face paint instead of masks. Masks can make it hard for your child to see properly and often restrict peripheral vision, making it difficult to check for oncoming traffic before crossing a road. For more on Halloween safety tips, visit www.safekidscanada.ca or call 1-888SAFE-TIP (721-3847).

Emilie-Claire Barlow to sing at Neat Coffee Shop Oct. 30 The beat goes on at the Neat Coffee Shop in Burnstown this Sunday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. as Emilie-Claire Barlow brings music from her same-named CD to local music fans. The Beat Goes On was nominated for a 2011 Juno for vocal jazz album of the year. She also earned an Indie Award nomination for jazz artist of the year. According to Barlow’s official website, The Beat Goes On is the eighth album in a recording career that spans 12 years and is a record of which she is justifiably proud. “I started looking at the songs of the ‘60s and they really struck me,” she says on her site. “This is not an attempt to sum up the ‘60s or call these the best songs of the decade. These are songs that hit me, sparking ideas of how to re-create them in my own way.” She describes the compilation as good cross-section of puzzle pieces from the musical decade with Motown (Yester-me, Yester-you, Yester-day), country (He Thinks I Still Care), singer/songwriters like Carole King, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Bob Dylan, bossa nova and psychedelia (Sunshine Superman). “The potent combination of well-honed vocal and musical chops and a charming stage presence has earned Emilie-Claire Barlow a sizeable and loyal following worldwide,” the website says.

Six Grey Cup rings and the best of times This is the second in a three-part series on Ottawa Valley residents who played in the Canadian Football League, and their impressions of the CFL today.
STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com
Dale Potter began his Canadian Football League career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1973 and ended it with the Toronto Argonauts in 1984. But he shone brightest, by far, as a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. The linebacker was part of a sensational team that, to this day, remains the talk of the CFL when it comes to dynasties. Potter’s first of six Grey Cup victories happened in 1975. The next was in 1978, to start a fiveyear victory string in the lateNovember classic, as Potter was surrounded by a glut of stars, including hall-of-famer quarterback Tom Wilkinson, kicker Dave Cutler, future NFL star quarterback Warren Moon, linebacker Dan Kepley and defensive end Dave Fennell. Retired from a long teaching career, he now resides in Horton Township with wife Janet, but he doesn’t have to look far to be reminded of those successful times. For one, there’s his right knee replacement two years ago. After playing high school football for the Hillcrest Hawks, he played a season for a North Carolina college, before transferring to the University of Ottawa where he was a strong defensive player. That first year the Gee Gees reached the 1970 College Bowl (now the Vanier Cup) where they lost to the University of Manitoba Bisons. He had a strong season as middle linebacker the following season, but sat out his final year with the Gee Gees after tearing right knee ligaments in training camp. Nevertheless, he was the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ first pick of the draft (in the second round) and became a starter when another Canadian, Rob McLaren, went down with an early-season injury. By next season, Potter had been traded to Edmonton, where he quickly established himself as a starter under the no-nonsense approach of head coach Ray Jauch. Shortly into his Eskimos career, the team moved from Clark Stadium into the breathtaking Commonwealth Stadium. But it wasn’t just the new home’s physical components that were superb, said Potter. “I can’t pin it down. There was just a different (football) person-
The Edmonton Eskimos of the 1980s were the toast of the Canadian Football League, partly because of a stalwart defence. That defence was led by the likes of, from left, linebackers Dan Kepley and Dale Potter, and defensive back Ed Jones. ality in the West.” Football was big and, accordingly, so were the crowds and the overall community support for the game. “Edmonton was a tremendous organization,” said Potter. “The comparison between Edmonton and Winnipeg was unbelievable. The quality was different … There was a professional attitude, everything was positive, and the coaches were excellent.” The coaches also had the privilege of working with one of the grittiest, and most successful, quarterbacks in CFL history. “We were starting to dominate, and Tom Wilkinson was a great quarterback,” says Potter. “He’d throw left-handed (to complete a pass), or he’d make up plays in the dirt. “He was always upbeat and told the players not to worry.” Another star was middle-linebacker Dan Kepley who, with Potter and Tom Towns, created a formidable linebacking corps. Potter says Towns was “tough as nails,” while Kepley, who arrived in 1975, was “a rugged bugger … you could see this guy was a player, a hitter. And we just started to win.” Even the gradual diminishment of Wilkinson’s game didn’t get in the way, as a new star, Warren Moon, offered athleticism, intelligence and ongoing stability at quarterback. As different as the quarterbacks were in style, so were
CFL in the
VALLEY
I loved being in Edmonton. It was the greatest time to play in the CFL. – Dale Potter head coaches Jauch and 1977 successor Hughie Campbell, a hall-of-fame receiver with a quiet demeanour. No cursing came from him, says Potter. “He just spoke very plainly and would say things like, ‘We need to play better.’ A simple compliment from him meant a lot.” One of Campbell’s coaches, defensive co-ordinator Don Matthews, also stood out, as “the greatest football mind I came across. I learned more from him than any defensive coach.” He was also tremendously positive and hugely supportive of his players. Potter smiles when he remembers how every Monday team meeting would start with: “We’ve got ‘em.” Matthews took a similar approach even in dire situations, like the 1981 Grey Cup that the
Eskimos badly trailed against the Ottawa Rough Riders. Potter recalls Matthews down on his knees sketching out what the players weren’t doing and what they needed to do. The Eskimos won the Cup that day, but trailed 23-13 in the fourth quarter before rallying to score on a Warren Moon touchdown run, a two-point conversion and a late Dave Cutler field goal. Potter also made his contributions, including the recovery of a fumble, which led to an Eskimos touchdown. “We just wore them down and wore them down,” says Potter. “They had just lost momentum.” MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER One of the biggest individual moments for Potter was the 1980 Grey Cup, in which he was named the top Canadian player and most outstanding defensive player. The Eskimos trounced the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 48-10. “Sometimes you play in a game and nothing seems to happen,” recalls Potter. “But as an outside linebacker you want to jam the receivers. As a result, I was significant in stopping the pass, and a lot of plays came my way. “As Don Matthews would say, there are (usually) five or six plays in a game when you make a significant difference, but you
never know when those are (going to happen),” he said, offering the example of how a play might come back against the flow and the linebacker has to be ready to make the play. Potter says he also took pride in studying his own position as a linebacker. “I weighed 230, 235. I was big. I could play the run well, and I learned how to cover receivers,” explains Potter, noting he knew how to play effective zone defence and contribute to a fast, physical defensive corps. Admitting he was never a great tackler, nor as aggressive as Kepley, Potter says: “I was just a solid linebacker who earned his position and held it.” Winning also became contagious. “We just took on the assumption that the Grey Cup would be ours,” adds Potter. “I loved being an Edmonton Eskimo. I loved being in Edmonton. It was the greatest time to play in the CFL.” Of course, they didn’t always win. For example, in the 1977 Grey Cup in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium that was dubbed the staple-shoe classic, the Alouettes used a strong game from quarterback Sonny Wade and staples in their cleats to secure footing on the greasy pitch. It shouldn’t have been greasy, but the retractable roof lay in storage in Paris during a legal dispute between the stadium builder and the City of Montreal. “It was an embarrassing loss,” recalls Potter of the 41-6 defeat. “They had receivers beating our defensive backs that they would normally be covering with ease.” That was also the era when football players had second jobs, and Potter was no exception. Team meetings were at 2 p.m., prior to practice, and players didn’t leave for home until 8 or 9 p.m. for several years. In those years, Potter also worked as a part-time teacher. He was still teaching when Potter learned his Eskimos career had come to an end. Potter was released during training camp for the 1984 season. The bad news came from the legendary Eskimos head coach Jackie Parker, who could barely get the words out in his deep southern drawl. “I consoled him,” he recalls. But that wasn’t the end of gridiron action, just yet. He was picked up by the Toronto Argonauts, for whom he played five games, including one game back in Edmonton. See ‘DALE’ Page 17

The Arnprior District High School football teams picked up two shutout victories on home turf last Friday. The Senior Redmen crushed Fellowes of Pembroke 56-0 to run their record to 5-0 and clinch first place in the Renfrew league. Since allowing eight points in its first game of the season, Arnprior has racked up four straight shutouts.
In Junior action, the Redmen blanked St. John’s of Perth 12-0 to remain tied with Smiths Falls for the league in the Renfrew-Lanark league with 5-0-1 records (for photos, see page 23). Meanwhile, jersey-clad football players will be going door-to-door in Arnprior and area this Saturday, Oct. 29 collecting donations for a new scoreboard.

Dale Potter: Edmonton Eskimos
Continued from Page 16 Shortly before that game, Potter was told he was wanted at the door of the dressing room. Standing waiting for him were former linebacking teammates Kepley and Towns dressed in full uniform. “It was truly a moment,” says Potter, who was wished well by his buddies, before shaking hands and sharing a group hug. Potter had a strong game, as Edmonton won by a small margin. It was a strange day, admitted Potter, with several former teammates winking at him while going on or off the field between plays. That also turned out to be Potter’s last game with the Argos, to complete a 12year CFL career. Meanwhile, he continued teaching, in Edmonton and returned to his native Ottawa in 1986 with wife Janet and their two children. In 2000, Potter was inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame. But he wasn’t the family’s first inductee. It was a particularly proud day knowing his dad, Ross, who had died in the early 1990s, was an earlier inductee for contributions as a builder, a hockey play-
er and baseball coach. After teaching in the national capital area took him to Jockvale, Metcalfe and North Gower elementary schools, Dale Potter retired in 2007. Today, football’s still never too far away. “Once an Eskimo, always an Eskimo,” says Potter, who would love to see the Ottawa Rough Riders (or whatever they will be called) return to the CFL within a few seasons, so he can see the game closer to home. Two years ago, he also underwent right-knee replacement surgery, but doesn’t for a moment regret pursuing a football career. “Would I have given it up? No,” said Potter, noting football led to other career opportunities. “It was a huge part of what I was and what I am.” About two years ago, the Potters moved to Horton Township. They’ve made new friends, kept in touch with older ones, and joined the parish of the Castleford United Church. Dale has also helped out in recent political campaigns for Jim Silye, who finished second in the 2010 Arnprior race for mayor, and for MP Cheryl Gallant. “I just really like it here.”

Schools, county paramedics team up to make county fit As another GET With it season prepares to begin at Arnprior District High School, Renfrew County’s top paramedic congratulated the Renfrew County District School Board for its part in making Heart Wise Exercise programs across the county a success. The inside walking program gets underway Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m., starting in the high school cafeteria. The Get WITH It group walks the halls of the high school Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. from Nov. 1 until the end of March. “About 7,000 people are active two nights a week in your schools,” Renfrew County Paramedic Service Chief Michael Nolan told the school board during its October program committee meeting. “Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated.” The Heart Wise Exercise program is a Renfrew County paramedics’ initiative, with the help of the University of Ottawa
Heart Institute, aimed at people with heart disease and those concerned about their heart health. Along with several public buildings and clubs providing support, four schools, including Arnprior, making their facilities available for Heart Wise Exercise programming. “Sometimes physical activity is the remedy,” Nolan said. Renfrew County is one of the worst areas in the province for heart disease. The schools have opened their hallways to program participants while students and teachers help run the programs. User fees were waived by the RCDSB and in some cases so have insurance costs. “This isn’t just about heart patients, it’s about community,” Chief Nolan said pointing out 10 families are walking together. For more information on the Heart Wise Exercise program, visit its website at www.heartwiseexcercise.ca.

Health Unit flu shot clinics for Arnprior planned for Nov. 10, 30 The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is offering a series of flu vaccination clinics again this year. The clinics are open to individuals who work, live or attend school in Ontario with no appointment necessary. The Health Unit urges people to get a flu shot to help prevent the spread of the disease.
Homeopathic flu alternative offered The Hahnemann Centre for Heilkunst is offering for the eighth year free homeopathic flu clinics. The clinics will be held this Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Arnprior Bulk and Food Store from 10 to 11 a.m. and at the Pura Vida Health Food Store in Renfrew from noon to 2 p.m. People who miss this opportunity can still get the oral flu treatment. Call Natures Truth/The Hahnemann Centre for Heilkunst at 613-623-8804 to arrange a pick-up. Manuela Mueller-Code of the Hahneman Centre says her offering is a healthy alternative to the flu shot without any harmful side effects for young and old. Furthermore, it’s oral application is appreciated by many people who don’t like needles. “It’s natural, effective and safe,” she maintains. “Get your ‘healthy’ flu shot alternative this year.”

Arnprior OPP won approval from council to install prohibition signs at the Albert Street and Malloch Road cemeteries. Staff Sgt. Mike Forster said signs similar to those near the waterfront on Galilee Centre property have given police additional powers to fine partiers. “We’ve been experiencing some people doing things they shouldn’t be doing,â€? he said. “Obviously we want people to go in and visit loved ones. It’s a pretty sensitive area.â€? Town council agreed Monday to a sign that may include the wording: Cemetery is municipal property. Approved activities are permitted and visitors are welcome. The following activities are prohibited and violators will be subject to prosecution: • Vandalism; • Littering/waste disposal; • Unauthorized vehicles; • Consumption of drugs/alcohol; • Lewd or harassing behaviour. Forster said handing out $65 fines could help dissuade people from behaving disrespectfully at the cemeteries.

Most children and adults look forward to Halloween fun, costumes and trick-or-treating. But this particular holiday can prove to be a stressful and potentially hazardous time for your beloved pets. Here are some tips to keep your animals safe and sound during this Halloween season. • Loud noises can easily excite and frighten pets. Dogs in particular can often feel threatened by strangers appearing at the door in strange costumes. If possible, keep your pets secured in a separate room in your house while young trick-or-treaters are ringing your doorbell. If you decide to let your pets be ‘part of the action’, keep a close eye on them so they don’t suddenly make a break for the open door and slip out into the great outdoors. • Don't leave your pets
flow if too tight and can become entangled in an animal's fur. Also, get your pet used to the costume several days before Halloween and don’t force them to wear it if they rebel. Never leave a pet in costume unattended! • Dogs get can excited and stressed when encountering all the ‘strange laughing, squealing’ creatures and may become agitated enough to snap at a young child, if you must take Fido with you trickor-treating, keep him on a short leash and away from large groups of children and other pets. • Halloween candy is for humans, not animals. Do not give your pets any candy, especially chocolate. Candy in itself can make your pet sick and chocolate is especially toxic to dogs. • Cellophane wrapper, foil paper and lollipop sticks should be thrown

outside on Halloween night. Cats especially should be kept indoors several days prior to (and on the night of) Halloween. Pranksters can tease or hurt your animal at this time of the year, and we've all heard the horror stories of cats being killed by vicious people on this particular night. • If dressing your pet up in costume, make sure it is lightweight and non-constricting. It should be loose enough that an animal can easily get out of it. Don’t use rubber bands, as they can constrict blood
in the garbage. These items can be hazardous to your pet if swallowed causing intestinal obstructions and even perforating the intestines, which is life-threatening • Keep your pets away from lit candles and pumpkins that can be easily knocked over causing a fire. Cats and kittens are especially curious and could accidentally burn themselves if they get too close to an open flame. • Make sure your pets have collars and identification tags just in case they do manage to get outside. Here’s to a haunting and safe Halloween. Ian owns and operates Wags & Whiskers Pet Grooming and Puppy Kindergarten at 118 John St. North. Public works director Janet Collins was congratulated for obtaining an executive diploma in municipal administration, considered the most comprehensive career development program designed specifically for Ontario’s municipal managers. Deputy clerk Maureen Spratt was thanked for a long list of duties performed recently: she filled in while the clerk was on holidays, but also provided tours for many students during municipal governance awareness week, and organized volunteer appreciation night.

They raised more than $1,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The employees raised this inspirational amount by selling books, candy bars and riding a stationary bike for an hour during the day. Arnprior music fans are in for a treat this Saturday, Oct. 29 when the Ottawa party band Roadhouse entertains for the third annual Rock for CHEO. The band wowed a large crowd when they played for last year’s Rock for CHEO. This year’s fundraiser will run from 8 p.m. to midnight at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church Parish Hall. Former CTV anchorman Max Keeping will also be on hand to support the fundraiser. There is a long list of prizes up for grabs at the fundraiser, as the community has been extremely supportive, says organizer Sonia Mullins-Forget. Tickets cost $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

PETER CLARK
peter.clark@metroland.com
A new Valley band has a distinctly Arnprior flavour. Four of the original members of the popular local band Hyrd Gunz are back together with a fifth member from Disturbing the Peace and Carvalho. Now known as Catalyst, they can be seen live, playing a fundraiser this Friday, Oct. 28 at the Renfrew Legion. It’s a Halloween Bash, and partial proceeds from the event are going to the Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN). “We have lots of experience,” Brent Swaine of Catalyst said. “We have four original members of Hyrd Gunz, and Rob Dontigny has a ton of experience from previous bands over the years.” Dontigny has also toured throughout Canada. The band is made up of Herve Despres (guitars, keyboards, mandolin and vocals), Mike Delorme (bass and vocals), Scott Jessup (vocals and guitar), Dontigny (guitar, harmonica and vocals) and
Swaine (drums and vocals). Most are from the Arnprior-McNab area. Delorme lives on Goshen Road and Jessup is from Eganville and lives in Douglas. “We were doing about 380 shows a year,” Despres said. “Sometimes we did three on a weekend. “Between the five of us, we probably have 200 years of music experience,” Despres added. “We basically re-met last year. We’ve been playing since June 2010 as a band. We’ve had about 25 gigs as Catalyst. (We’ll be) playing our first public gig in Renfrew.” “We are really trying to promote it,” Swaine pointed out. “People might not know Catalyst. But they know Hyrd Gunz and they’ll come out. Jessup said Catalyst has a good array of music people will enjoy. “We play classic rock, ’70s and ’80s stuff. Some country, all dance music.” “People have commented on songs. They like what we play. The toughest job is playing the right songs,” Despres adds.

Catalyst plays before 4,800 people at the 2011 Navan Fair Aug. 12. They opened for April Wine. Above left are the band members, from left, Mike Delorme, Scott Jessup, Brent Swaine, Rob Dontigny and Herve Despres. They take to the stage Friday, Oct. 28 at 9 p.m. at the Renfrew Legion. Many bands have a reason behind their name, and Catalyst is no exception. “It’s the meaning of the word,” Swaine said. “You can’t have an event without a Catalyst. Your party can’t start without a Catalyst. We make things happen.”
“We’ll play anywhere, any time,” Jessup adds. Swaine said an exciting event for the band occurred on Aug. 12. “We opened for April Wine at the Navan Fair. There was about 5,000 people. “We already have a lot of irons in the fire for next year,” Swaine said, adding, that includes Christmas parties this year. Tickets for Catalyst’s Halloween Bash cost $10, available at RBC Royal Bank in Renfrew and at the door, or from band members. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the music runs 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. “Prizes will be given for best costumes as well as a door prize. Come join us and help support CPAN, as Halloween should always be for the kids,” band members added. “We have many fans who would come and hear us play as Hyrd Gunz, and would like to invite former and new fans out to help make this fundraiser a success,” Swaine noted. More information on the band is available at catalystband.ca.

Nature
Following in the footsteps of Charles Macnamara Recently I led a walk along the Macnamara Trail, which meanders through the Nopiming Game Preserve on the east end of Arnprior. With me were 45 members of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ and the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ clubs, the latter our local group based in Arnprior. Four rewarding hours were spent looking at birds, plants, and everything else encountered on the trail. Charles Macnamara was a naturalist and photographer who worked as a bookkeeper for the McLachlin Lumber Company a century ago. He spent his one free day a week exploring the land that lay between the Madawaska River and Marshall Bay where his cabin was located.

Far too often I hear that people drummed merrily away on a diswho venture into the wilds saw tant log.
We caught a masked Wood Frog that soon will be spending the winter frozen in the ground, half of its body water turned to ice (Wood Frogs are one of our four species that spend the winter in a frozen state). However, to me the two highlights were very different types of living things. One was a rather amorphous mass of black strings that hung off a tree. When touched, the stuff gave off a puff of black spores. One of the experts in our group identified the odd material as a Slime Mould, one of those odd organisms that are part fungus and part animal. They slowly crawl around as a slimy mass only to climb up something and transform into a spore-producing body, which
was the form we had found. The other organism was equally exciting. An entomologist in the group spotted some insects on a Leatherwood, an odd shrub whose branches bend like rubber. The insects were sucking bugs called Leafhoppers that were laying eggs. They turned out to be a species found in only a handful of sites around Ottawa and in Indiana. The eggs overwinter on Leatherwood and the ensuing nymphs and adults suck that plant’s juices. Every outing on the Macnamara Trail turns up new discoveries. But that is something that Charles Macnamara knew a hundred years ago. The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

DEATHS
You bring me such joy in so many ways, Like a warm, radiant sun that brightens my day, Your beauty, your confidence, your spirit so strong, All shine from within like a wonderful song. Your talent, your grace the gifts that you shared, With faith and with wisdom, show the way that you cared. So, I’ll love you forever, because right from the start – You filled me with love and put a smile on my heart. You’re my beautiful Daughter ---A promise comes true. God gave me a miracle when He gave me you. Now I want you back. Until we meet again.
I remember the day I met you, And the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, And will till the end of time. We made our vows together, Until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, My whole world fell apart, Sometimes, I think I’m dreaming, I can’t believe it’s true, That I can go on living when I no longer have you, And the memories of the happy years, When we were together; The joys, the tears, the love, the fears, Will stay with me forever, And when I’m sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer up and carry on.” Each time I see your picture, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry I’m only sleeping, We’ll meet again someday.” Always in my thoughts, Forever in my heart, I will always love you, Rhonda

Love you always, Miss you forever.
1912 - 2001 I have felt the breeze upon my face, The breath of all my children, One was lost, and now is found, I rest my weary head upon the ground. Throughout the years, my hope was there, And through my children, kept her near, Knowing that all are safe for now. In tribute to the mother I never met… If I had known my birth mother Iris beyond my infancy, I would have loved her even more dearly than I loved those who cared for me when I was unaware of her existence. I now have come to know her through my newly discovered dear sisters and brothers who shared her certainty that somewhere I was waiting, unknowing, to be found. I grieve that I did not know her, but am comforted that she carried my baby picture with her until she departed this life ten years ago. I keep her picture near me at all times. Janet… (June, Bruce, Roberta, Yvonne) 312200
