Arnprior mayor reflects on first year in office DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

CELEBRATING YOUTH Greig Burnie was the guest speaker when the Town of Arnprior and the Optimist Club joined to honour the town’s young athletes at the 15th annual Arnprior Youth Athletic Appreciation Night. 5

One year to the day after the 2010 Ontario municipal elections, Arnprior Mayor David Reid reflected on the ups and downs of his first foray into politics. Sitting behind the mayor’s desk in a smallish office upstairs at town hall Tuesday, he reminded that due to electronic voting irregularities Arnprior’s elections took an additional day to finish. Despite the shaky start, he wasn’t surprised by the other 364 days. “It’s gone pretty much as expected,” he said. “It was essentially a lot of observation, listening, learning and reflecting.” Councillors – almost half of whom entered politics for the first time for this term – made a conscious decision to proceed that way. To not react to “public perception,”

as Reid phrases it, but to base decisions on complete knowledge. Critics have said council could move quicker on some issues. Reid said next year will see more tangible results. “That phase is complete. We have a lot better grasp,” he said. “We’ll be taking on a lot more responsibilities.” He is referring specifically to development. Reid, a former developer himself, said a lot of work done behind the scenes this year will pay off for developers and town residents as a whole starting in 2012. He is confident the town could reach an optimal level, perhaps with an eventual population of 10,000, which would ease the burden on current ratepayers, provide local jobs and boost town revenue; all without too much more infrastructure investments. FITNESS IS FUN Fitness is in the spotlight in the Arnprior area with several initiatives, including the start of the Get With It program Tuesday. 19, 29

The top bureaucrat at Arnprior town hall was let go on Oct. 20. Larry Donaldson, who was chief administrative officer (CAO) for more than 10 years, guiding the corporation through rough patches such as last year’s human rights tribunal and the water billing fiasco, said the new

council wants to go in another direction. “I respect council’s desire to head in a new direction and wish the Town of Arnprior the very best in the future,” Donaldson said in an email to the Chronicle-Guide. “It’s a great town with a great past and greater future,” wrote Donaldson.
