It’s the end of an era. Railway travel has been part of Arnprior and surrounding communities since 1872, but that chapter ends this year. Ed Greenberg, a Calgary-based spokesman with Canadian Pacific Rail, says the process to salvage its railway ties, rails and related equipment will start this month, perhaps as early as this week. He wouldn’t disclose the name of the companies that are responsible for overseeing the salvage process, but workers accompanying salvage rail cars through Arnprior and Renfrew Tuesday indicated the salvage company is from Kansas. When resident Wayne Nute heard the train whistle about 3 p.m. Tuesday, he dashed out of his house and drove down the road to see the rail cars. Nute’s grandfather (Robert Burton) was a railway worker out of Sand Point, probably back in the 1880s, and later a station agent in Renfrew. Seeing the salvage cars, Nute calls the demise of the line the “end of an era. No doubt, the railway (locally) is essentially done.” He calls the death of the local railway sad. Greenberg said Canadian Pacific will pull up about 25 miles of track, between Renfrew and Pembroke, starting this month and finishing later this year. “That’s all that’s planned for 2011,” he said. The remaining 160 of the 185 miles of CP track between Smiths Falls and Mattawa will be salvaged in subsequent years, he added. See ‘CP RAIL’ Page 31

FORECAST: FAIR ALL WEEKEND LONG Madison Toner patiently waits and watches as crews work to set up the midway for the 157th Arnprior Fair, which opens today, Thursday, Aug. 4 at 4 p.m. The midway is bigger and better than ever this year, say organizers, with 15 rides on offer for fair-goers. Friday is Family day, when admission is just a toonie from noon to 2 p.m. World’s Finest Shows has confirmed they will do a toonie special from 1 to 2:30 p.m., with all rides costing just $2. For the full fair schedule, see the centrespread on pages 20-21.
Make sure highway land prices fair: Mayor The province should realize farm property values have increased significantly in the area targeted for expropriation for the next stretch of four-laning of Highway 417, says McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell. Notices expressing the province’s intention to expropriate several parcels of land in the township have been published with the deadline for affected resi-
dents to ask for an inquiry being about Aug. 19. Campbell said the township hasn’t an official role in the expropriation process, but has an interest in ensuring its residents are being treated fairly. If they are to receive a fair price for their land, the government needs to realize that land values have increased recently, she said.

Determining just how much Karst topography is in McNab-Braeside is high on the priority list for the Ministry of Natural Resources, but officials can’t say exactly when the reports will be in. MNR Pembroke district manager Rick Watchorn told council Tuesday his office is working closely with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to define the areas of Karst or potential Karst. The township is attempting to come up with a policy to deal with development in the Karst area that requires special environmental protections. The issue is important to the township
as preliminary provincial studies indicate there is large Karst area stretch along the Braeside Ridge and as far as Stevenson Drive. Karst is a distinctive topography in which the landscape is largely shaped by the dissolving action of water on carbonate bedrock. The process results in unusual surface and subsurface features ranging from sinkholes, vertical shafts, disappearing streams, and springs, to complex underground drainage systems and caves. Coun. Brad McIlquham said at one time there were maps indicating “quite extensive” Karst or potential Karst in the municipality. He wondered about how the township could get more complete information and how to fund these efforts.
“Are there are any plans for you people to try and get some money available from either the federal government or provincial government to do some more studies to find out if there’s actually Karst in our area?” asked McIlquham. Watchorn said his office would be available to help the township access possible funding sources, but first the studies needed to be refined. “We’re working with folks from OMAFRA. These folks have some expertise that we’ve been looking for at MNR. I know they’re working diligently on that.” Watchorn said the issue is high on the priority list. “It’s not something that’s sitting on somebody’s desk. It’s top of mind,” he said. “That’ll give us a much better idea of scale and what
we’re looking for,” said Watchorn. Refining the information and gathering it in one place will help determine if current practices being utilized on or near Karst are suitable, said Watchorn. While Karst areas normally can’t be developed without expensive studies to be paid by the property-owner, County planner Bruce Howarth has suggested the township approve a compromise policy. It would allow developers to avoid some of the extra studies if there is a metre of natural overburden on the property. Council has decided it should hold a public meeting, likely in September, to get the public’s opinion, before deciding whether to approve or reject the recommendation. Files by John Carter

Profit posted for McNab Days SHERRY HAAIMA Sherry.haaima@metroland.com
The final numbers are in and McNab-Braeside township is indeed in the black following the McNab Days festival held in late June. Net profit from the event, which stretched over three days and was held in several locations, was $2,439.06, council was told Aug, 2. “I was hoping for break even, and to make a profit is great,” said Coun. Brad McIlquham. He joined Mayor Mary Campbell and the rest of council in touting the efforts of volunteers, staff, businesses and the community, who all came together to make the event a success. As per an earlier council decision, the funds will be spent on a new township sign along Highway 17. Several ideas were bandied about, including commissioning a larger version of the sign at the township office or putting a call out to the community to submit ideas. Council has directed staff to gather information on sign pricing and design.

After seeking clarification that the Nature Conservancy of Canada was actually asking for a $2,000 donation from the township, McNab-Braeside has opted to say no. The NCC owns the Gillies Grove natural historic park that is located mainly in Arnprior but does occupy some land in the township. “Given that the Grove property is publicly owned by Nature Conservancy and is not a municipal recreation facility council does not feel it appropriate to fund them taxpayer dollars,” said Mayor Mary Campbell.

MOTORBIKE/CAR COLLISION
Bayview Lodge Road home hit by fire Two fire departments joined forces to fight an early morning house fire east of White Lake Sunday. The fire caused substantial damage at the residence at 127 Bayview Lodge Rd. Mississippi Mills fire chief Art Brown said his department was called about 1:40 a.m. Mississippi Mills firefighters were joined by firefighters from McNab-Braeside. The fire crews extinguished a fire in an old log home and garage. The home owners were out of town in the United States, so the home was vacant at the time of the blaze. No injuries were reported. Brown said the department has an idea of how the fire started and where, but nothing is definite. He estimated the fire caused about $150,000 in damage to the property.
Cocaine seized Three local men have been charged with possession of cocaine for purpose of trafficking. Renfrew OPP report that on July 18 officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 17 in McNab-Braeside. After locating and seizing a quantity of cocaine, a 24-yearold Calabogie man and a 47-yearold Renfrew man were arrested and charged with possession of a schedule 1 drug for the purpose of trafficking. As a result of the investigation, a 22-year-old Renfrew man was charged with conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of possession of a schedule 1 drug for the purpose of trafficking.

Two people were taken to hospital with unknown injuries following a motorcycle/car collision on Highway 17 near Division Street Tuesday around 5 p.m. Renfrew OPP and members of the McNab-Braeside Fire Department responded to the scene. M-B Fire Chief Ken Walton said about 15 firefighters attended and assisted with patient care for the male and female who were on the motorcycle, directing traffic and clean-up of the scene. The highway was closed for about 20 minutes while emergency teams worked to get the patients on their way to hospital and clean up the scene.

The competition was held at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville July 6 to 9. “I am extremely proud of our dancers,” said Monica Lyon, director of the school of dance. “We achieved remarkable success
this year. “Considering our dancers compete against schools whose dancers train much longer hours per week then our dancers, we do very well. Our dancers are very disciplined and it shows in their results.” The dancers brought home three diamond, six platinum, four high gold and 11 high score awards. Choreographer Janyne Milliken’s hip hop groups led the way with two first- and one second-place group finishes, two judges awards, the first and second highest marks in the hip hop category, and the seventh and eighth highest marks out of the entire competition. Andrea Bahm Barker’s musical theatre group received the highest mark in the musical theatre category and the 10th highest mark in the competition. The Arnprior School of Dance also has a recreational dance program that runs from September to May. Interested dancers should visit the website, www.arnpriorschoolofdance. com or call 613-623-5938. Sandvik-union talks short-lived JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
A hoped-for break-though in the stalemate between Sandvik and its striking Arnprior employees has failed to materialize. The short-lived optimism was prompted by word late last week that talks were resuming Friday between Sandvik and the Canadian Autoworkers Union (CAW), which represents 157 workers at the steel manufacturing plant. The workers walked out on strike July 14, arguing the company’s offer would lead to unacceptable changes to benefits and working conditions. Conversely, the company maintained that if it agreed to the union’s stand, it would put the company’s future in financial jeopardy. Talks broke off in early July. While CAW, Local 2228 officials
were hopeful the resumed talks would lead to an agreement, the discussions were short-lived. The company’s new offer reportedly sweetened the pot when if came to cost-of-living adjustments, but the union balked because other issues were not addressed. The company, meanwhile, claimed the union had not compromised at all, as it had not made any changes to its demands. The negotiations broke down Saturday and no new talks have been scheduled, leaving the workers back on the picket line this week. The Swedish-based Sandvik Materials Technology company has plants across Canada and around the world. The Arnprior plant makes metal tubing for the nuclear, aerospace and automotive industries.

CELEBRATING THE NEW-LOOK BURNSTOWN BEACH
Second-hand smoke is dangerous, even in the great outdoors
The popular Burnstown Beach has a whole new look this summer. The beach has been enlarged and a canteen and children’s play structure added. The additions to the McNab-Braeside-operated municipal park on the Madawaska River just north of downtown Burnstown were made possible in part by funding grants from the federal and provincial governments. Several representatives gathered on the beach July 27 to celebrate the improvements. Above, holding up the anti-smoking sign the Renfrew Health Unit brought to promote a smoke-free environment for children at the beach, from left, are McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell, MPP John Yakabuski’s representative Mary Ann Taman, McNab-Braeside Coun. Bob Campbell, township recreation committee member Matthew Arseneau, health unit representative Jaclyn Van Esbroeck, recreation committee member Art Leblanc, MP Cheryl Gallant, Coun. Brad McIlquham, recreation committee chairwoman Coun. Aldene Styles, Trillium representative Diane McKinnon and township recreation director Geoff Patterson. Left, members of the group pose for a photo on the play structure, but it didn’t stop this little one from getting use out of the brand new slide. Below, MP Cheryl Gallant won’t be found selling pop at the canteen this summer, but she did attend the official opening, posing below with members of the group who worked to bring the new canteen and washrooms, with running water, to the beach.

Awareness versus enforcement
LETTERS
Time running out to save rail line
I
magine you moved to Arnprior before the July 21 Chronicle-Guide story ‘Traffic ticket enforcement to grow teeth in new year’. You moved here from almost any neighbouring municipalty - Ottawa included. And soon after moving here, you found yourself with a parking ticket to pay. Chances are you would make a beeline for town hall and pay it right away. After all, if you are in Ottawa or most other neighbouring municipalities, you have to pay your traffic tickets or else pay even more down the line. It’s common practice, not to mention common knowledge. There’s no getting out of it. But after paying the ticket (which, to your amusement and delight, was far less than you would pay in the city), someone tells you that they don’t pay their tickets. Nor do many of the people they know. ‘Why bother,’ they say. ‘The town can’t do anything about it.’ Wouldn’t you feel a touch annoyed then? Wouldn’t you feel there is a double standard at work? The newbies are paying tickets (in fact, 70 per cent of offenders are paying their tickets), while others have long known that bylaw enforcement has almost no teeth to it. In fact, that scenario has played itself out more than a few times in our experience. It’s not a good thing to have slip into the realm of ‘common knowledge’ and yet it has. Perhaps in an attempt to keep it out of common knowledge is the reason no one on council, let alone on town staff, bothered to raise the issue during the July 11 meeting. The meeting dealt with upgrading the parking and traffic enforcement bylaw, but primarily aspects of it that could see the town generate revenue from the municipal parking lot. There was no mention of the elephant in the room parking itself in the handicapped zone. By our estimates, based on loose numbers provided by the town, Arnprior taxpayers are out about $220,000 in unpaid tickets over the last 22 years. Talk of generating revenue might start with forcing the other 30 per cent of offenders to pay up. Obviously the loophole should have been plugged years ago. That a municipality is just getting around in 2011 to jumping on board by passing part two of the provincial offences act - that part that compels offenders to appear in court, pay the fine, or face not having their driver’s licence renewed - is baffling. If not for the additional revenue, then at least for what it doesn’t to respect for the law. No lengthy awareness campaign is needed. Just get the law in place.

Europe shows how important rail transportation can be To the editor: I’m writing to voice my concern for the removal of the Ottawa Valley Railway. I understand the loss of the rail will cut important ties for industry in the Ottawa Valley and impede future growth and potential. However much this saddens me, I’m writing today from an international traveler’s point of view, as I’m no industry expert, though I may consider myself a bit of an expert user of public transportation. Since growing up in the Ottawa Valley, I’ve spent the past five years living in various countries in Europe. I’ve often thought that the train networks I’ve experienced can and should be something Canada aspires to. I’ve just moved to Switzerland after spending three months here earlier this year. One of the assets this country boasts is its accessibility through public transportation. Today I bought an eight-month travel pass that allows me free access to all trains and buses throughout Switzerland. I opted for this over using a car because

of the operating costs of a car, including the rising cost of gas; because it eases my environmental conscience; and also because I know I will be able to access anywhere I could want to go. I live in a small town of approximately 5,000 people, and I don’t have to wait more than 15 minutes to catch a train from here to the nearest city. From there, the country’s my oyster! There are many Swiss commuters on the trains during the week. Without giving such alternatives to Canadians, we are heading for an irresponsible reliance on cars. It is baffling to me that tracks are being removed. These are tracks that could link towns west and south of Ottawa to the city. Maybe the financing, not to mention foresight, doesn’t currently exist to develop a commuter train, but how long before an alternative is necessary for the growing number of people sitting in rush-hour on the highway every day?

To the editor: I am writing this email to RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski to address a concern that is of great concern to me. As I am sure you are aware, beginning tomorrow (Aug. 3), CP Rail will start removing the rail lines from the Ottawa Valley line between Pembroke and Arnprior. I grew up in the Ottawa Valley and have very fond memories of the trains that used to run several times a day up and down the CP Rail lines between Ottawa and Pembroke. Up until last year, these trains were a part of daily life in the Valley, a symbol of strength and a connection to the past. As a kid who spent many many summers in Sand Point at my grandfather’s cottage, I can remember vividly running to the tracks every time I heard the whistle blow and waving at the conductor and the man in the caboose who would always wave back. While I understand that rail today may not be ideal, it is certainly the most affordable way to transport across the country. With the ever increasing cost fuel, transport trucks, while able to deliver directly to customers location, isn’t the most economically viable. The rail lines and the right-of-way remains there with the CP lines and I believe that allowing CP Rail to remove these rails will not only rob our children and grandchildren the opportunity to see a train, but more importantly cost the people of the Ottawa Valley jobs and infrastructure opportunities. I would like to ideally see these rails active again with freight trains. This rail line is also the one which supported CFB Petawawa.

I walk on the ground barefooted like Mother Nature, Seeing the beauty with open sparkling eyes, I sing with voice that shames the birds and dance under the moon with silver finger tips. I awake to the world where I am not so inspired but move with a grace of growing confidence, With knowledge I am curvy and soft, yet strong and energized, No I’m not as small as the living doll in the magazines, Not airbrushed and molded into a tiny lithe shape. I am tall and rubenesque, a sense of self and solid in grace, My husband’s dream, his muse, his harbor from the storm, his sensual haven, Out there I breath words of encouragement, I whisper words of endearments, I shout words that would dispel hatred and disparagements. Behold a woman not of smallness but of greatness overcom-
ing the bulling hand of penned in minds, That demand for others fitting in to the same inadequate vision of reduced size, To conform to the few who want sheep like followers, not a living breathing ideal women of size. I stand in the light of others, who hold hands in friendship, I walk towards the horizon of change in thought and concept, I carry the children that follow in steps of understanding, I bring hope to the afraid and insecure, I am Woman of size and proud, I sometimes struggle past the glances of pity and words of hate, I may fall with despair and cry with broken heart, I may tear at my skin and clothes in frustration. At the end of the day I lay under the sheets with my love, There is warmth and gentle hands, loving kisses to sooth the soul, A nurturing soul giving comfort to his true real woman, With her curves, her softness, her beauty. I dream … running in fields with the Deer, Catching moonbeams and string them for a necklace, A Goddess to be worshiped and adored. Commuter rail line needed for transporting goods Continued from Page 8 I travel the 417 quite a bit and see on a regular basis numerous transport trucks transporting military equipment from CFB Petawawa to other locations. Why can this equipment not be transported using the rail lines? Another option that would be viable is a commuter rail line between Pembroke and Ottawa. I know numerous people who commute from various points in the Valley to the city for work. In addition to this option cutting down on their commute time, it would also be much safer. The highway from Pem-
broke to Ottawa is only one lane in each direction and is well known for serious accidents. Couple that with the cost of fuel these days, and I know they would definitely be interested if they had an option where they could take a train from Pembroke or Arnprior into the city where they could hook up with inner-city public transportation. I am asking you as my MPP to please look into this matter as time is of the essence. Thank you for taking the time to read my concerns. Stephen Mielke Sand Point
Continued from Page 8 We could keep adding lanes to the highway or we could work towards a more progressive alternative; one that involves infrastructure that is already in place! Removing the tracks will be a disastrous step
backwards, obviously for accessibility for local industry, but also for the potential it posed to the future of public transportation in the area. Jillane Goulet Switzerland

Fitzroy cemetery to be re-dedicated The Fitzroy Township Historical Society has completed renovations at the Smith Pioneer Cemetery and will hold a dedication ceremony Saturday, Aug. 13. The public is invited to the event at 11 a.m. at the cemetery at 6046 Carp Rd. The historical society has now restored three pioneer cemeteries in the former Fitzroy Township. The Smith cemetery - located on lot 14, Concession X - was renovated, fenced and plaqued. The cemetery, which contains six burial plots, is on private property owned by Catherine Wilson. She is the great-grand-daughter William Fredrick Smith, one of the first pioneer settlers of the Fitzroy area. He settled the lot in 1829. The society and the Wilson family and friends will gather at the site Aug. 13 for the dedication ceremony celebrating the restoration of the cemetery. The plaque on the Smith Pioneer Cemetery contains the names of five of the six people buried there. They are William Fredrick Smith (1798-1886), Sarah Jane (Nicholson) Smith (18221903), Eliza Albina Smith (18391859), Horace F. Smith (1857-1858) and Samuel Kedey (1870-1875). The sixth person is unknown.

Victorian tea to be served this Saturday at Waba Museum JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
Old school versus new school
Drivers are tweaking their engines and reinforcing their cars in preparation for this Saturday’s Arnprior Fair demolition derby. Derby organizer Scott Rancourt, left, with 27 years of derby experience, will face off in his 1991 Camry against his nephew Josh Rancourt in a 1994 Volvo. Josh, with six years of derbies under his belt, is eager for the match. “It’s a going to be a real rivalry,” said Josh, who will be vying for the trophy against his uncle in the four-cylinder class. “It’s the past versus the future.” The demo derby starts at 5 p.m. at the fairgrounds in Arnprior.

Nominations are being accepted for the Prime Minister’s Award for Volunteers. “Our experience in the Ottawa Valley is that the best solutions to the challenges facing Canada’s communities are more often than not found locally,” said Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MP Cheryl Gallant. “For this reason, in January 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the creation
ceremony, the first of which will be held in early 2012. Regional award recipients will be eligible to identify a not-for-profit organization to receive a $5,000 grant. National award recipients will be eligible to identify an organization to receive a $10,000 grant. If you know a volunteer, innovative not-for-profit organization or a local business that makes a positive impact on the
national and 15 at the regional level. The awards highlight best practices in community leadership and encourage partnerships across sectors. The goal of the Awards is to inspire Canadians from all walks of life to find new ways of making a difference in their communities. Award recipients will be announced each year at an award
of the Prime Minister’s Award for Volunteers to recognize the enormous contribution volunteers make to Canada.” The awards recognize the exceptional contributions of volunteers, local businesses and innovative not-for-profit organizations in improving the well-being of families and their communities. The awards program consists of 17 awards, two at the
community, you can nominate them today. For more information call Gallant’s office. The deadline for nominations is midnight Sept. 9. Nominations submitted by mail must be postmarked no later than the deadline. “It would be an honour for me to assist in any applications for these prestigious awards for volunteers,” said Gallant.

The Ottawa Valley Attack girl’s fastball team headed to Port Perry on the weekend to try and qualify for the Provincials. The team, sponsored by NeilCorp Homes/West End Forming, not only qualified but came home with the gold medal in the 12-team doubleknockout event. The team has members from several Upper Ottawa Valley communities, including Arnprior and Pakenham. In the Attack’s first game against Peterborough, pitcher Jean Cardona, threw a onehitter, striking out 11 and led the team to an impressive 6-0 win. The defence was solid as Cardona faced only 24 batters in the seven-inning game. The Attack batters jumped on the Peterborough starter for two runs in the first inning. Alex Baylis, a graduate of McNab Minor Ball, started it off with a single and scored on Aisha O’Connor’s triple. Cardona grounded out to second to plate O’Connor for the 2-0 lead. In the third inning, the Attack increased the lead to 3-0 on a walk to O’Connor, a stolen base and a Cardona single.
Kiley O’Connor led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a single by Emily Atkinson-Jones for a 4-0 lead. In the fifth inning, with Alisha O’Connor on, Tawny Godin hit a homerun to add two more runs to for a 6-0 lead. In game two, the Attack faced Ajax Raiders, who had beat Barrie Storm in their first game. Cardona was in the circle again and picked up another five strikeouts. The Raiders managed four hits, but the Attack played well defensively and won 12-2 in a three-inning mercy. After scoring one run in the first, the Attack bats were rolling and they scored seven in the second and four in the third to end the game. Kirsi Maharaj and Bronwyn Ferguson both were 2 for 2 and had key hits in the rallies. Kiley O’Connor picked up a triple and Godin a homerun for the Attack. The Valley girls’ bats were hard to stop now, as they next mercied another Peterborough squad 20-2 in three innings. Alex Baylis, Kelly Meek of Arnprior and Julia Dick were hot offensively and scored
three runs each. Cardona allowed two runs in the first but settled in and struck out four in the next two innings for the win. The fourth game was between the Attack and the only other undefeated team, the Pickering Heat. As in the previous games, the Attack started fast with three runs in the first inning. Pickering would not fold, though, and scored two in the second and two in the third for a 4-3 lead. The Attack would not be denied, as they had multiple hits from Alisha O’Connor, Cardona, Kiley O’Connor and Meek including homeruns by the O’Connor girls to produce a 10-4 win. The Attack advanced to the Sunday final and would now have to be beaten twice to be denied the gold medal. Pickering won the Sunday afternoon game against Scarborough to meet the Attack in the finals. Again the Heat fell behind but battled back to make the score close before the Valley Attack bats put the game away, winning 12-7. Cardona, after pitching stellar all weekend, gave the ball to Alisha O’Connor after four
innings and the Attack closed the door quickly from there. All nine batters in the Attack line-up produced at least one hit in the final in a well balanced effort offensively. The gold medal performance advances the team to the Provincials in St. Catha-
rine’s Aug. 12 – 14. After five tournaments, the Attack has claimed one gold and two bronze medals and still has a reason to play hard for a few more weeks. After 42 games the team has a record of 31 wins, 7 losses and 4 ties.

Reinhart ends McGee’s championship run worst drives of the Ottawa Citizen Amateur Golf Championship cost Reinhart the lead, but he rebounded to win by six strokes. Reinhart’s tee shot into the water on the par-four seventh led to a Allen McGee, who golfs out of the Arnprior Golf triple bogey seven, as he lost the lead to Crowe and left McGee in conClub, was in position to win his second straight Ot- tention. Then Reinhart fired off five straight birdies, to finish with a tawa Citizen Amateur Golf Championship July 26, three-day score of 210, compared to 216 for runner-up Crowe. but he couldn’t make a putt. A bad decision on the third hole was also part of his slide from title contention to a fifth-place finish, nine strokes off Dwight Reinhart’s winning score of 210 McGee, of Dunbobin, tried to play his second shot through the trees instead of pitching out and playing safely to the third green. The double-bogey didn’t help his chances, but he was still in contention, one shot out of the lead, with nine holes remaining. Then, on the 11th hole, he hit a “terrible eight iron” in the trap and bogeyed, while Reinhart birdied to extend his lead. McGee was in the final threesome, with Reinhart of the Renfrew Golf Club and Jeffrey Crowe of Camelot. Reinhart and Crowe shared the lead Your new contractor is Topps Environmental Solutions at the time, but Reinhart’s putter turned magical, with five straight birdies, on the 10th through 14th rd holes, en route to a six-stroke victory over Crowe. “What it came down to was putting. He was hot and I didn’t make a putt all day,” said McGee. The defending champion, who was runner-up four times before winning last year, also admitted it was a lot easier losing this time because the champion is a good friend. Reinhart was the quickest out of the gate, despite the 30-degree C heat, in the opening round at the eQuinelle club in Kemptville July 21. He shot a seven-under 65. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke NDP provincial candidate Brian Dougherty has launched a Facebook campaign as part of his effort to spark a public outcry to prevent the removal of the Upper Ottawa Valley’s only rail line. While people enjoy vacations and summer weather, CP Rail is beginning the processes of ripping up the train tracks through the Ottawa Valley, to the dismay of local residents, he said. Dougherty, of Arnprior, points to the 30 million in provincial dollars invested to save the CP rail in Northern Ontario as a precedent and questions why Conservative MPP John Yakabuski “has not said a word” to access funding for the riding. “While we see investment in our neighboring ridings to the north, south east and west, we watch our infrastructure get ripped out of the ground,” he lamented. Dougherty calls for the provincial, federal and municipal governments to come to the table to develop a regional transportation strategy that connects the Valley with Ottawa, the rest of Ontario and the world. “The CP Rail line provides the perfect basis for a commuter rail to and from the city for residents and tourists, while offering local farmers and manufacturers a sustainable transportation alternative as the price of gas continues to skyrocket,” he said. The Counties of Renfrew and Lanark Hana Burton expresses her dismay at the demise of have called on both the provincial and the Upper Ottawa Valley’s only rail line. CP Rail is federal governments to come to the tabeginning the process of tearing up the train tracks ble and play a key role in saving “this running through the Ottawa Valley. economic asset.”
Resolutions were followed by a rally and press conference by municipal leaders on parliament hill, calling for a moratorium on rail line discontinuance to allow all stakeholders to have a coherent dialogue on the future of the rail line. “The responding silence has been deafening,” said Dougherty. “It is just another example of the McGuinty government’s blatantly disregard for rural Ontarians, while funneling money to the big cities for urban projects.” The NDP candidate calls on Valley residents to make their voices heard through a Facebook campaign; Save the Railway. To participate, he suggests residents take a picture of themselves standing on the tracks, post it on Facebook at Brian Dougherty ONDP and spread the word. Dougherty is also encouraging residents to monitor the removal operations and post pictures of local rail activity. “This is a way for residents to get involved and speak up before it is too late,” he said. “If social media can transform governments, surely it can rally common sense.” NDP riding association president and recent federal candidate Eric Burton joined Dougherty in calling on the public to show its support for rail. “The Ottawa Valley railway is not only part of our heritage that was paid for by our grandparents’ tax dollars, but it is critical to the future sustainability of our communities,” said the former Arnprior council member. Along with the reduced carbon footprint and environmental sustainabil-
ity of rail, Burton is concerned that regional assets such as AECL and CFB Petawawa will no longer be connected to the integrated transportation network, resulting in a decline of federal investment. “CFB Petawawa is in a strategic location because it is connected to the nation’s capital and the continent by both rail and road,” said Burton. “Ripping up the tracks reduces its strategic value, and we may see those funds go elsewhere.” CFB Petawawa utilized rail as the method of transportation for a recent troop and equipment movement to California. Burton says this raises two critical questions. “First of all, if rail is not more efficient then truck for this purpose, why did the government mismanage our funds. On the other hand, if rail is the most efficient mode of transportation, why would we be removing the track? Are we not intending further operations?” Despite the imminent threat to the rail line, Dougherty remains optimist. “As long as the rails are still in the ground, we are not going to give up trying to save them for future generations,” he said. “After all, this is our home, and if we want our kids and grandkids to say the same, we have to plan and invest in our future.: For more information on the Save the Railway campaign, follow Dougherty at twitter.com/BrianONDP, join him on Facebook at Brian Dougherty ONDP or call 613-620-5315.
CP Rail pulling up tracks in Renfrew County Continued from Front Track materials will be utilized in other key areas of the CP network,” added Greenberg. Railway travel has been a fixture in Renfrew County for more than a century. The Canadian Central line arrived in the area in 1872, while the final route of the Old K&P Rail was opened in Renfrew County, between Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound, in 1893, as a pivotal part of a booming timber industry. “I’m not in position to provide statements on the (railway’s) state of the nation,” said Greenberg politely, before emphasizing CP’s focus remains on freight operations in Canada and the United States. The confirmed salvage of the railway’s equipment could lead to interesting conversation in the Aug. 9 meeting of Renfrew County’s property and development committee. Paul Moreau, the county’s property and development director, had heard that track might be pulled up between Pembroke and Cobden. “I think it will be an interesting debate in terms of where the county goes from here,” said Moreau. CP’s decision to salvage the tracks doesn’t help the county’s economic future. “It closes the doors to a mode of
transportation that may have helped our local economy … and to attract new industries. Now the transportation corridor (of rail) can’t be offered.” CP spokesman Greenberg suggested the end of railway service in the county began when Rail America ended its lease agreement with CP over a year ago. CP has long been sensitive to the importance of the railway to communities in the area, said Greenberg. In fact, CP had committed to entertaining business discussions after filing its notice of discontinuance with the Canadian Transport Agency on May 30, 2011. Moreau says CP made that commitment to local MP Cheryl Gallant. The notice of discontinuance covered the CP railway between Smiths Falls and Mattawa. The decision to salvage the railway tracks, and related equipment, is strictly a business decision, said Greenberg. “It’s well documented Rail America terminated its lease agreement on these rail lines in 2009 and 2010, and then combined with the fact our company is efficiently using our core network, these lines are no longer required for operations.” As part of the salvage process,
Greenberg says contractors “will be responsible to leave the right of way in a clean orderly fashion, free from railway debris. Road crossings will be restored to their (original) condition.” Meanwhile, Greenberg indicated Canadian Pacific is “continuously responding to the increasing needs of our customers and ensuring our operations are prepared for any shifts in shipping patterns … We had to make a decision that is strictly a business decision,” said Greenberg. With the salvage process starting this month, Moreau says it’s the county’s time to “make the best of what’s left … The question is ‘where to from here’ with respect to the county’s possible role of purchasing the abandoned line.’ Renfrew County, Lanark County and the Township of Papineau-Cameron have each claimed first right of refusal for the abandoned rail beds for their respective section of the line between Smiths Falls and Mattawa. At the Petawawa Civic Centre on Jan. 6, 2010, during a major meeting of county politicians and railway officials, efforts were made to avoid a possible closing of the rail line. At the time, then Warden Don Rathwell said the county had “to look at every avenue we can” to keep the line open.
The train carrying salvage equipment that will be used to remove the rail line moves up the track towards Pembroke, where the process was expected to begin this week.
