EMC news – During an era when Canada is hemorrhaging manufacturing jobs to Mexico, China and elsewhere, it makes for good news that a sizable employer in small-town Ontario can survive, let alone announce dozens of new jobs, a multi-million dollar expansion, and a significant grant from the federal government. But that happened at Pillar5 Pharma on Madawaska Boulevard – during a nasty snowstorm - last Friday afternoon. Stormy weather has been the metaphor used to describe the global economy since the 2008 meltdown. Even Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant used the term while at Pillar5 to announce the government’s up-to $2.5 million grant. Instability may be holding back private and public investors from spending money in many areas, but she’s confident

Arnprior’s pharmaceutical plant is a safe bet. “Canada has weathered the economic storm with lowered taxes and promoting free trade,” she said. “Investing in companies like Pillar5 will create high-quality jobs and long-term stability in Renfrew County, while supporting an important sector of Canada’s export economy.” Pillar5 produces eye-related over-thecounter and prescription pharmaceutical products for clients in Canada and around the world, in both liquid and pill form. The grant will go toward a $12-million project that will see the installation of a machine twice the size of the current one, thereby expanding the former Pfizer plant’s capacity for sterile ophthalmic manufacturing. Company officials don’t reveal precise products or client names, citing customer confidentiality.

EMC news – Renfrew County marathoners are alive, but shaken, after two bomb blasts left three people dead and about 140 others injured at Monday’s Boston Marathon. Arnprior residents Jes-

se Knockleby and Katie McColeman were among the more than 20,000 people, including 2,078 Canadians, registered to run the 117th edition of one of North America’s most prestigious road races. All Canadians have been deemed safe. In a message Tuesday,

Knockleby expressed his disbelief. “I am home now, safe and sound. I was well clear of the area when the tragic events occurred. I was very shocked to hear about this senseless act on the radio as I was driving home from the city. See ARNPRIOR, Page 9

EMC news – And the winners are. A long-time community volunteer, the Arnprior Communities in Bloom group, Dochart Farms and four successful local businesses were honoured April 11 at the Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce’s ninth annual Business Achievement Awards and Gala Reception. A large crowd attended the dinner emceed by MyFM’s Laura Earl at the Nick Smith Centre. The Town of Arnprior changed its

DAY

award this year, leaving the business awards up to the chamber of commerce. Instead Mayor David Reid presented a new award to the town’s first Volunteer of the Year Don Derraugh for his many contributions to Seniors at Home, minor hockey, Communities in Bloom and Friends of the Grove. Reid said Arnprior is fortunate to have so many faithful volunteers and it’s was with a “heavy heart” that council had to only pick one for the award.
