EMC news - Some Arnprior residents could actually see their property taxes go down this year. However, many are facing a modest increase after Arnprior council set its tax rate Monday. While the town’s tax rate is going up slightly, thanks to a last-minute decision to add $100,000 to reserves, it could well be balanced with a drop in the county and school rates. Council approved the town’s 2013 budget after three public meetings held the previous week.. “The new budget is based on a 1.13 per cent municipal tax rate increase, said town CAO Michael Wildman. “But when you net out the increases and
decreases at the municipal level, at the county level, and at the educational level, in fact, you’ll notice a slight decrease in the overall taxes. Per $100,000 of property assessment, the net decrease is about $6, he added. However, most propertyowners will see an increase in assessment this year, so that could mean an increase in the bottom line amount. That varies from property to property. While Arnprior residential assessments have risen an average of 1.46 per cent (about $204,000) this year in the first of a four-year equal increase, waterfront properties have seen a drop in value on average 6.3 per cent after several years of steep increases.
Chip in for pets Baby English bulldog Harley is non-plussed as he prepares for his turn at the microchip clinic hosted by the Arnprior and District Humane Society at Pet Valu in Arnprior April 20-21. Owners Erin, above, and Chris Proulx wanted to support the shelter and planned to microchip the four-month-old pup anyway, so visiting the clinic was a natural choice. Appointment numbers were down this year but support for the humane society and Pet Adoption weekend at Pet Valu was strong, especially important at the moment as the Arnprior shelter is over-populated and not accepting new animals.

EMC news – McNab-Braeside council is looking for the highest and best use for its land and they’ve enlisted FA Capital Lands Inc. to help them identify just how to achieve it. FA Capital Lands’ Bruce Firestone and company president Susan Anglin made their pitch to council April 16. Council passed a motion to accept the
proposal at the cost of $15,000 plus H.S.T to create an economic development template for the township. The company will create an economic development strategy report that will outline a land use and township positioning strategy that will enable the municipality to capitalize on its natural assets to begin to develop its full economic potential.
