DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Among those dancing for residents of the Arnprior Villa was this year's winner of the Caitlin Stewart Memorial Award. Abby Phillips-Visneskie won the prize presented annually by Arnprior School of Dance. After performing at the retirement residence on May 1, Abby sat to express her appreciation at being selected. "I was shocked and very happy, and very, very excited," she said. "I love to dance. I feel it's something emotional. And I'm with friends and teachers, and I make new friends." She indicated the award is bigger than herself; a lot to live up to; and an honour to receive. Her mom and dad are Christine and Dana Visneskie. Caitlin Stewart died following a car accident at Hwy. 17 and White Lake Road on Nov. 2, 1998. A huge highland dance competition is held in her memory at Robert Simpson Park each summer. "The award is presented to a youth who demonstrates a love for dance, and brings positivity for self and others," said Monica Lyon, director at Arnprior School of Dance. Abby and others from the company danced at their year-end recital May 4, at the Algonquin College Commons Theatre. It was the 31st Annual recital for the Arnprior School of Dance.

OFFICIALS ISSUE WARNING AFTER DRUG OVERDOSES INCREASE IN ARNPRIOR SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@ metroland.com A sudden increase in the number of local drug overdoses in the past week has prompted officials to issue a warning to the public. In one of the cases, police are investigating the possibility of a death being drug-related, says Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Const. Tina Hunt. "Renfrew County and District is experiencing a sudden increase in the number of overdose reports in the last week, mostly in the Arnprior area," says a May 2 Renfrew County District Health Unit press release. "Cocaine laced with fentanyl and the drug 'Purple' (purple heroin) are reported to be involved in the most re-

cent overdoses. We are warning people who use drugs that Fentanyl or Carfentanil can be mixed into other illicit substances." Information from the Renfrew detachment of the OPP indicates there have been at least five suspected overdoses in the past week. "Access to several extremely dangerous opioids is not limited to larger cities; these drugs have infiltrated every corner of our province in some form or another. Purple heroin, known locally as 'Purp', is typically a combination of heroin mixed with either fentanyl and/or carfentanil. Fentanyl is 40 times more potent than heroin and carfentanil is 100 times more potent than fentanyl," say the OPP. "There is no way for users to know exactly what

substances are in illicit drugs. Carfentanil is so dangerous that quantities as small as a grain of sand could be lethal. Samples from the same batch of drugs could differ in content enough that one user survives and another does not. These potent opioids are also being added to other seemingly benign drugs such as cannabis." Police are warning the public that when you buy drugs on the street, there is no way of telling whether they have been laced with more powerful substances such as opioids. "You can't see them, smell them or taste them. If you buy and consume any type of illicit drug, you are putting yourself and potentially others at extreme

risk," says Const. Hunt. "People need to educate themselves and their kids." Andrew Keck, a Renfrew County District Health Unit (RCDHU) public health nurse working in harm reduction, said the health unit continually monitors overdose rates, which are typically "relatively low and stable." This is the first time RCDHU has issued this level of alert, he noted. "Whenever we see an increase, which is not often, we reach out to our partners to try and obtain more information about the overdoses they may have heard of and what type of drugs," said Keck. For those hesitant to seek help when an overdose occurs for fear of repercussions, he points out there is a Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act. "If you are to seek medical help for yourself or someone on-scene, neither of you will charged for possessing or using drugs," said Keck. "That's one of the major fears of people. That act does offer you some protection." The best way to avoid overdose is to not use drugs, but standard messaging for those who do is simple. "If you're going to use drugs, don't use alone, have Naloxone and call 911 if there's a problem," said Keck. There is a variety of ways to get Naloxone, which is provided free of charge. "The easiest way for most people is to go a local pharmacy - there are 28 pharmacies in Renfrew

THE ISSUE: AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF DRUG OVERDOSES IN ARNPRIOR LOCAL IMPACT: USERS' HEALTH AND LIVES ARE AT RISK

Torstar file photo An increased number of overdoses in Arnprior has prompted officials to issue a warning to users. County that are supplied. We do suggest calling ahead to make sure they have them on hand. They'll provide training with the kit," says Keck. Kits and training are also available at the health unit in Pembroke and at Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres in Pembroke and Renfew. There is also a ministry website www.ontario.ca/ page/where-get-free-naloxone-kit that allows you to see where in your community kits are provided. RCDHU says if you're going to use drugs: • Don't use alone - If you overdose, there will be no one there to help. • Don't mix drugs - Don't mix drugs with other drugs or alcohol, as it puts you at higher risk of overdosing.

• Go slow - Quality of street drugs is unpredictable. Start by using in small amounts (testers or test doses) to check the strength of what you are using. • Carry Naloxone/Narcan® - Naloxone can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, and is available free to people who use drugs in addition to their family and friends. • Know your tolerance Risk of overdose increases if you are a new user or haven't used in 3+ days. Understanding the signs of an overdose can help save a life. These signs can include: • Breathing is very slow or irregular, or they may not be breathing at all • Fingernails and/or lips are blue • Body is limp • Deep snoring or gurgling sounds • Loss of consciousness/ passed out (can't wake the person up) • Unresponsive (not answering when you talk to them or shake them) • Pinpoint (tiny) pupils If you suspect an overdose is occurring, call 911 and if possible, give Naloxone and CPR. More information is available at Renfrew County and District Health Unit or Renfrew County Addiction Treatment.

NOTICE - WATER MAIN FLUSHING ALMONTE WARD May 6 – June 14, 2019 The Corporation of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will be flushing the water mains in all areas of Almonte Ward beginning Monday, May 6, 2019 to Friday, June 14, 2019, during the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (excluding weekends). This annual maintenance program is designed to remove the sediment that has accumulated in the water mains to maintain good water quality in the distribution system. This maintenance procedure is required under the Provincial Legislation and may result in temporary inconveniences to you such as reduced water pressure or red (discoloured) water. • Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants are being flushed. The pressure will return to normal once the flushing is completed. • If you detect discoloured (red) water, turn off your tap for 20 to 30 minutes; this should allow work crews enough time to complete the flushing. When work crews have left the area, turn on one COLD water tap for a few minutes to flush the system. • Discoloured water may occur in close proximity to the watermain flushing or many blocks, even kilometre’s away, depending on various factors such as their supply main size, location and demand flows. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the location and extent of the customers that may receive discoloured water. • Residents who live in the areas being flushed may want to collect containers of water for drinking and cooking, each day before the flushing program starts. • We recommend that you do not drink or wash laundry with red water. We appreciate your patience while this work is being completed. If you would like more information, please call the Roads & Public Works Department at 613-256-2064 and speak to Rod Cameron ext. 232 or Cindy Hartwick ext. 258.

SIX-FOOT FENCE PROPOSED FOR BRIDGE AREA DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Those who enjoy taking a stroll down to the Madawaska Bridge to admire the river and weir below - and the banks and marina and Ottawa River in the distance will do so from behind black bars that reach six feet high if Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has its way. OPG representatives told council of its plan at the April 23 meeting, a month after hosting a public information session in town. Changes will include booms below the weir are in response to dangerous behaviour observed in the area last summer. However, the new fencing sparked opposition among many on council. The entire guard-rail style fencing will be replaced with decorative fencing, Scott Gagnon explained, citing public safety as OPG's top priority. Visual appeal is also considered, he added. Coun. Ted Strike stressed the significance of the municipality marketing itself as the town of two rivers. He wants to see it reduced to four feet, and is against the "spikes" at the top of each bar. "I don't think that's right," he said. "The spikes are dangerous. I don't like it." Gagnon noted that the height and spikes were not popular with council. "We are open to feedback," he said. Coun. Tom Burnette agreed with Strike. The town's former fire chief doubts the number of incidents warrant such significant changes. Gagnon said OPG contracted a security guard who observed 20 incidents; most were boats getting too close to the weir; 25 per cent were people trespassing across the fence to fish or jump in the river. "I find it hard to believe," Burnette said. "Safety, yes, but sometimes you can carry it too far." Coun. Lisa McGee and Strike oppose the prospect of peering through steel bars. The latter adding that if someone wants over a fence, they will get over it. Coun. Lynn Grinstead said pools require fivefoot fences and that curved tops would be better than spikes. Mayor Walter Stack said council was united on the issue. "There is a fairly strong consensus about the height and the marketing the town around two rivers," he said. Stack also wants OPG to satisfy criticism by area anglers. "I ask that you reach out to them. They are an active, strong group around town," he said. "Communication is everything and you guys are doing a great job."

OTTAWA RIVER FLOOD FROM A REPORTER'S VANTAGE DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com The third truck to unload student-made sandbags from Arnprior District High School left Rhoddy's Bay on Tuesday afternoon as a screaming light armoured vehicle (LAV) carried reporters into what many call "a hidden paradise" overlooking the lovely Ottawa River. Packed inside the tanklike truck, we descended to the right and could feel asphalt give way to a gurgling other-world; the river's strange and cruel horizonality. When the eightwheeled amphibian jolted to a halt an eerie silence settled in. My head popped out to see a home stuck in a huge swimming pool. An omnipresent pool? Solid ground a memory. Trees reflected in what was once a street. And white-framed

windows danced almost demonically in the reflection of their front lawns. Ripples from the LAV lapped against oddly placed pleasure boats. Worthless debris pushed against precious belongings. Value and meaning were topsy-turvy. The river licked door handles, wrapped arms around a snowmobile, and came to rest on a loveseat swing. It said nothing yet silenced all. No signs of life cars, lawnmowers, kids playing in the road - almost like the aftermath of an urban battle. The enemy was everywhere yet nowhere. After the initial awe, normal life kicked in. The sun was warm but we knew it to be fleeting. Soldiers tossed sandbags while a lone resident picked through boxes and other items drying on a deck, presumably pulled up from a ravaged basement. Though just feet from one

another, it seemed an unbridgeable gulf between military precision and civilian despair at that moment. Evacuation was probably a good choice on many levels. The mouth of an exhausted hose hung over a white row of sandbags, vomiting contaminated water forced from a sump set down deep inside a home's stomach. Everything seemed upside down and ugly. At this point, two days after arrival, the military was beginning to consider next steps on its down-river march toward Ottawa. They helped save all 20 permanent homes, according to Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden, a fellow passenger in the LAV. (Cottages are considered secondary residences so were left to fend for themselves.) "The mood changed from panic to relief when they arrived," Armsden said. "Our firefighters are

doing a great job. But it's been two weeks. Every day 25 of them - half the volunteers we have - have been doing this." More than 150,000 sandbags were laid down, most in the previous four days. Some were packed too tight, leaving space for the river to easily exploit. Walls collapsed, bags split, and more than few tears of hapless homeowners switched teams. However, that was before Major Shane Gapp and his two platoons of Oscar company soldiers (many specialists called pioneers) arrived on the scene. "We've been able to get in there and push the water out," Major Shane Gapp said of the 45 members. "I'd say we have it under control here. But we won't leave until the township is happy with the state it's in." Gapp has that youthful confidence and detached

Even Karen Barsoski, a volunteer firefighter many township residents know and admire greatly, seemed somewhat deflated. She'd been working one side of Rhoddy's Bay; too busy to get to relatives on the other side,

which was impassable even for a LAV. "We are trying so hard and many of us have outside jobs. You just feel so bad for the families involved. You know they are up at night," Barsoski said. "And it keeps us up at night too."

OPINION EDITORIAL

Flood waters that prompted state of emergency declarations in Renfrew County and seven lower-tier municipalities are slowly subsiding and while it's given affected residents a chance to catch their collective breath there's plenty of work to be done in the coming weeks and months. Horton, McNab/Braeside and Whitewater Region residents in particular have been dealing with the effects of rising waters over the past several weeks. If you have experienced floods on your properties, please keep in mind some safety precautions for drinking water. The Renfrew County District Health Unit (RCDHU) offers some advice. Flood water and water ponding around wells and septic systems can have adverse effects on the safety of your drinking water and how your septic system works. Residents whose wells are directly affected by these conditions should boil their water for one minute at a rolling boil before drinking the water. Have your well water tested for bacteria. If your septic system has been affected, limit water usage by taking quick showers rather than baths, avoid using the dishwasher, garbage disposal and washing machine and flush your toilets only when necessary. Ensure your basement sump pump is not going into the septic system. Do not pump out your septic tank when the soil around the tank or the leaching bed is still saturated with water. High ground water levels may cause an empty septic tank to float and break out of the ground, and damage the tank and connecting plumbing. • Keep your family safe by keeping family members and pets away from and out of the flood water; • DO NOT enter areas where electrical systems have been affected by flood water as you may be electrocuted; • Building materials, clothing and furniture exposed to flood waters are likely contaminated with sewage and can support the growth of mould; • Ask for professional advice during clean up. Horton Township is hosting a Wellness Centre for Flood Victims to bring all partners together under one roof for the residents who have been affected by the flood, to have access to and the opportunity to ask questions and bring any concerns forward. Participating organizations include Renfrew County Social Services, Red Cross, RCDHU, Hydro One, Electrical Safety Authority, Horton Fire Department, County of Renfrew Paramedic Services and Horton Township staff. The centre was scheduled to be open at the Horton Community Centre May 8, 2-8 p.m.; May 9, 2-8 p.m.; and May 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Red Cross is supporting relief operations in the area and has launched an appeal for people impacted by the flooding. Anyone who has registered with the Red Cross, either online or by phone, and is eligible for aid, will receive $600 as early as next week to help them with their flood-related expenses that are not covered by insurance or other government programs.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY HONEST, RESPECTFUL CLIMATE CHANGE DEBATE NEEDED: WRITER To the editor: At first I was amused when I started read your latest alarmist editorial on your global warming religion. To my surprise, it changed to agreement when you described the incredible community support of the effort to mitigate flood damage. I should have not let my guard down as you then went on to call me a "denier." Using the term "denier" is an attempt to stop debate, and shut people up. I do not accept your premise that the flooding proves catastrophic climate change is upon us. Perhaps you have already forgotten the incredibly cold winter we just had, with record snowfalls in February. An inconvenient fact is that according to your false prophets, snow was to be just a memory now, something to tell your grandchildren about. Oh, silly me, I forgot heat, cold, storms, lack of storms, droughts, floods, rain or any other weather event in

the history of the world proves global warming. What is needed is an honest, respectful debate. We should be concentrating on real air pollution, clean water, and replacing landfills by incinerating our garbage. But no, let's cripple our economy in a futile gesture to reduce our 1.6 per cent of worldwide emissions, so we can feel good for two weeks, until the Chinese replace them.

NOT JUST HUMANS CRAVE SALT MICHEAL RUNTZ TAKE A LOOK AT HOW MOOSE ACQUIRE NEEDED SODIUM MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

Because animals evolved in oceans, salt is an essential part of their body chemistry. To be more precise, it is sodium that is needed for proper ionic balance internally. In mammals, sodium is comprises about 0.1 per cent of their live weight. Thus, large herbivores like moose require a lot of sodium. These giants can weigh up to 1,200 pounds locally (Moose in Alaska top the scales at 1,800 pounds!), and devour up to fifty pounds of plant material every day. In winter, balsam fir twigs and needles are eaten, as well as twigs of willows and other deciduous shrubs. In summer, fresh leaves form much of their diet. However, all of those items, especially winter foods, contain very little sodium. So where then do moose attain enough of that mineral to maintain healthy bodies? The answer lies in the water. In early summer moose head to beaver ponds and shallow lake edges to

devour the floating leaves and underwater stems of waterlilies and watershield. The tissues of aquatic plants contain 400 to 500 times more sodium than those of terrestrial plants, so moose gorge themselves on water plants for many hours, day after day. But water plants aren't available for much of the year, so what do moose do during sodiumfree months? Remarkably, they store sodium in the first part of their stomach, the rumen, and draw upon those reserves through the rest of the year. Just like cattle, moose need help digesting the cellulose-toughened tissues of plants. That help comes from bacteria and other microorganisms that live in their rumen. These tiny symbionts digest the plant material that, before being swallowed, is first ground up by the moose's powerful cheek teeth. But plant tissues are stingy when it comes to giving up nutrients and since moose must extract as much nutrition as they can from every meal, they cough up the partly digested food and chew their cud to further physically break down the plant tissues. When swallowed, the masticated material is digested more completely by their little helpers. Aquatic plants are currently not available but moose in northern areas have found another source

of sodium. The salt that melts winter snow from highways is sodium chloride, and right now roadside ditches are full of it. That is why if you drive through Algonquin Park or northern Ontario right now, you'll likely encounter moose in ditches drinking water and eating mud. Moose may be easy to see right now but they're not at their photogenic best for they are shedding their plush winter coat. Hair loss is particularly evident around their shoulders, especially if they have been biting or rubbing these areas to rid themselves of winter ticks. It seems remarkable that microscopic organisms are necessary for a giant animal's survival, but it is not a one-way relationship. The microorganisms living in a moose's stomach get their food delivered to them in a warm, safe environment. In other words, for helping moose digest their food, they get "free rumen board!" The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca. Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the international television series Wild by Nature, and has written and photographically illustrated 12 books on natural history topics.

This young Moose in Algonquin Park is getting salt from the water in a ditch. It is shedding its winter coat, no longer needed for insulation from the cold. Michael Runtz photo

FERGUSON, Reginald

It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to our wonderful father Reg who died peacefully on May 4, 2019, surrounded by family, at the Ottawa General Hospital of causes related to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Reg will be sadly missed by his Newmarket family, Shelley, Jamie, Celeste and Harrison; his Edmonton family, Sherrey, Rob, Joshua, Emily, Ben and Cassie; and by his brothers, Ron and Gary (Carol); as well as his many nieces and nephews. Reg was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (nee Butts) who died of multiple myeloma; also predeceased by his brother Wayne (Patricia). Reg grew up in the Ottawa Valley. As a young man he enlisted in the military where he worked his way through the ranks to Engineering Officer and Fire Chief. Reg was a caring and considerate manager earning the respect and friendship of his senior officers and his crews. After a distinguished career in the military, where he was awarded the Queen’ Golden Jubilee Medal of Honor, Reg joined the Commissionaires where upon retirement he received the Canadian Exemplary Services medal. Reg’s love for his family was abundant. He always had time for a water fight, water skiing, coaching, and fun with his family. Dad was a proud grandfather and number one fan spending time in cold rinks, cramped dance recitals, concerts, sporting events and playing board games. Dad was the go to confident for the kids, a mentor and source of endless love. He was a loving husband, caring for mom through her battle with cancer. He never missed a birthday, loved to celebrate the holidays and was always there for us when we needed a boost. He was a strong presence and an amazing caregiver to all who had the honour to know him. Mom and Dad will always be in our hearts, and the memories of our family will be treasured forever We are immensely proud of the man that he was and grateful for the life that we shared. Reg’s family will receive friends at McPhail & Perkins Funeral Home, 85 Munro Ave. E., Renfrew on Friday, May 10 from 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at Hilltop Tabernacle, Griffith on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment to follow at Matawatchan Cemetery. Donations to Renfrew Victoria Hospital would be appreciated by the family. Condolences or donations may be made at www.mcphailandperkins.ca

FOR RENT

November 21, 1981 to May 13, 2009 In Loving Memory of our dear Son, Brother and Uncle. It is 10 years now Nathan and I still long to see a glimpse of my handsome boy with that beautiful smile! The pain of losing you will never leave. Initially, I wanted no part of your memories, I just wanted you and would shudder at all the endless comments “ You have all of his beautiful memories” however as time went on I realized that was all I really had left. On a lighter note Nath, your Dad and I are good, glad it is cottage season again. We are just setting up your park up there so we can take our daily walks to Nate’s Tree as we call it. Lol Nath! Your Dad has a pet partridge called Patsy! He calls her every day & she comes running right to the step where he is sitting and he scratches her back. I know how much you would have been into this. Do you remember the time you sat quietly outside the cottage for a whole day and caught that sparrow with your bare hands? You blew our minds! Life is great with me Nath with babysitting my sweet Macy a few days a week. What a joy that has come my way! You would love her! Devin and Hailey are doing great, working hard and over the moon too with that special little sweet heart in their lives! Ryan is doing great also, works hard, so proud of his accomplishments. Last but not least my other shining star Charlie! Growing up way too fast. Will be 11 this summer. He is a true sportsman just like you! Both of the boys are spending more time at the cottage which is great. Oh! Sometimes when I see them together it hurts, reflecting on those precious moments when I had 3 boys together clowning around! I know all lives end, but some too soon! We are thankful though of all the gifts you left behind that will touch our world and hearts forever. Say Hi to Gramps and Gramma for us. So relieved they are with you. Lol Nath! Gramma will be helping you now look after your beloved Gramps! I love you Nathan as much in death as I did in life! We were so privileged to have had you in our lives for 27 years. Wrap your arms around them Lord and let them know they are loved until we get to your Land above.

There's a bit of good news for music lovers. The Arnprior Public Library has launched "Share the Stage," an open mic affair and, if the first two shows are any indication, it is set to be a popular gathering. Musicians of all ages now have a new and casual venue to perform in, and music fans have a new free event to attend. The concept is simple: anyone from dabblers to dazzlers who want to perform are given the spotlight to do two or three songs. The

most popular, of course, is guitar accompaniment. But spoken word, poetry and any other instruments are welcome. So far, there have been plenty of performers to put on an entertaining few hours of music. Local musicians are finding a friendly spot to share their talents. The event has also drawn some fine talent from Ottawa and as far away as Matawatchan. There has been a good turnout of people who just enjoy listening. What makes this open mic different from most is that it is a listening atmosphere, the acoustics are excellent, and the surrounding shelves of books make for a peaceful setting. Share the Stage is loosely scheduled for the first Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. This month's show has been moved to May 11 at 7 p.m. due to previous library commitments. Fred Dellamico is the host of Share the Stage at the Arnprior Public Library.

WHAT'S ON

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

COURT CASE TO RESUME IN FATAL CAR CRASH OF TEENS DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The criminal case against a Calabogie bar server will resume on May 22 at the Renfrew courthouse. Ann Senack's lawyer appeared in court May 1 asking for more time to examine hard drives sent four days beforehand. Senack faces two counts of causing death by criminal negligence, and two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The maximum penalty on one count is 10 years' imprisonment. After leaving the now-closed Shooters Bar and Grill on Oct. 27, 2017, two teenaged Renfrew boys were killed and two more injured when their car crashed into rocks alongside Calabogie Road near Burnstown. OPP say alcohol was a factor. A gofundme campaign to cover Senack's legal expenses raised more than $53,000 from 442 people over the last 30 days or so. The campaign descriptor calls her a "very valued resident who has contributed to the success of many causes throughout the years," and goes on to say "she has driven countless customers home, cut off many who needed it and yes checked ID for thousands."

BAD MARGUERITE'S SPRING GIFT TO TEACHER BACKFIRES FLOWERS HAD MISS CROSBY SNEEZING LOUDLY, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Bad Marguerite was at it again, always trying to get on the good side of Miss Crosby. Often her actions didn't work out though. There was the time my brother Emerson stole the homemade doughnut she brought the teacher. Marguerite made the mistake of leaving it on her own desk at morning recess, meaning to give it to Miss Crosby when we were having our lunch. Everyone could see her, and that's what Marguerite liked ... lots of attention. Well, when Emerson was walking past Marguerite's desk, he crammed the whole thing into his mouth, and it was gone before he reached the back door! Of course, he did it so sneakily Marguerite didn't know who to blame, but she blamed Rocky, who was known to latch onto things that didn't be-

long to him. But Rocky had no idea what she was talking about. Well, here she was again. On a sunny and warm early spring day in May, she arrived at school just before Miss Crosby appeared on the step to ring the big brass bell. Marguerite had in her hand something wrapped in wax paper, and she had no intention of telling us what it was, but when we went into the school, she went right up to the teacher's desk, and plopped it right down on top of the attendance book. She didn't want Miss Crosby to miss it. Just before we took our seats, Marguerite jabbed her finger in the general direction of the parcel, and the teacher had no choice but to unwrap it. It was a bunch of daffodils and what looked like weeds to me, and some green leaves. Then the fun began. Miss Crosby threw back her head and let go with a sneeze that could be heard over in Admaston! Several more loud sneezes followed, and Miss Crosby quickly moved over to the window where the pencil sharpener was anchored, threw open a window, and set right in to morning prayers and the Bible reading, wiping

her nose at the same time never going back to her desk. The flowers lay opened on her desk, but she avoided going anywhere near them. She even called for recess way before the old CPR clock on the wall said it was time. That day, no one was allowed to stay in the school. My sister Audrey in Senior Fourth said recess went an extra 10 minutes, which suited me just fine. When we went back into school, there was no sign of the flowers. But we could sure smell Lifebuoy soap! And over in the corner where the big green tin waste paper basket stood, we saw what was left of Marguerite's gift to Miss Crosby. You didn't have to be a university graduate to know what was sticking out of the basket. It was a big parcel thickly wrapped in many pages of the Renfrew Mercury, well away from Miss Crosby's nose! Bad Marguerite, for once, had the common sense not to ask the teacher what happened to her flowers. It was a long time before she brought anything else to the teacher!
