There was not a word of opposition from either the packed gallery or council table when Arnprior decided that on June 7 the Pride Flag will fly for the first time at town hall. In an unusual move prior to the proclamation process at the May 13 council meeting, a member of the public was allowed to address council. Sophie SmithDoré shared her experience as a bisexual woman with a traditional family. There are others, she added, who don't fit "heteronormative spaces" and therefore live in danger. "Being a heterosexual person means you're 'normal' under social definition. This is a privilege," Smith-Doré told council. "It means you don't have to answer questions about who you are - or See ARNPRIOR, page 2

ARNPRIOR TO RAISE PRIDE FLAG AT TOWN HALL Continued from page 1
why you are that way. It means you can put a photograph of your spouse on your desk at work without worrying how people will react. It means you are safe to walk down the street holding hands with the person you love. You're in the majority." She shared statistics showing the risks of suicide among LGBT youth. And how those statistics drop considerably with family and community support. "The LGBTQ community needs visibility," she said. "Because of the lack of visibility for the LGBTQ community, youth struggle to live their truth without fear of being ostracized or even harmed by their peers. They feel they have to play the part of the heterosexual and gender conformed to remain physically and emotionally safe." On behalf of the many supporters in the room, one wrapped in the rainbow flag and another with tears in her eyes, Smith-Doré declared "town tolerance is in your hands."
THE ISSUE: ARNPRIOR HAS NEVER FLOWN A PRIDE FLAG AT TOWN HALL IN SUPPORT OF THE MARGINALIZED LGBTQ COMMUNITY THE IMPACT: FLYING A RAINBOW FLAG WILL SHOW THE TOWN TO BE TOLERANT AND PROGRESSIVE, AND ON ITS WAY TO SECURING A BETTER FUTURE FOR LGBTQ RESIDENTS There was little response from individual councillors, but they all supported the proclamation. (County Coun. Dan Lynch was absent for health reasons.) It will be raised during Pride Week. Mayor Walter Stack encouraged all members attend the June 7 event. Among a mayor's powers is
to allow the public to address council prior to a proclamation. "Not much needed to be said. I didn't expect anything else from council," Stack said after the meeting. "Arnprior, regardless of an incident in the past, is a very inclusive community. It was unanimous on council. That's why there was no debate on council. And I hope to see everyone out on June 7." In 2008, a town resident offered to purchase a Pride Flag and asked in a letter that it fly at town hall during the City of Ottawa's gay pride celebrations. The request was ignored. It was during a period when a gay couple in Arnprior lodged several complaints about homophobia to OPP; CBC Ottawa produced a piece on the issue and several newspaper stories were produced on the issue. At the time, the request was ultimately denied because a bylaw states that requests must be made by charitable organization. No one has made the request again until now. That made the request conform to the bylaw. Stack is the only current member who was on council in 2008. "There's not much value in revisiting what happened in the past. It was not handled in the absolute best way. Some of us were green and followed the letter of the bylaw," Stack said. "I've suggested to the clerk a need to loosen up the bylaw to allow for other groups."
STORY BEHIND THE STORY About 10 years ago, Arnprior generated headlines for an ongoing clash between a gay couple and several residents in town. Media from Ottawa and locally covered several issues at the time, including land-use and town hall's rejection to fly the Pride Flag. OPP were notified on many occasions. It was a dark period that lifted when council agreed to fly the flag on June 7.

ARH OPENS NEW DEPARTMENT WITH $1.79M INVESTMENT FROM PROVINCE ARNPRIOR REGIONAL HEALTH Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) opened its newly redeveloped Medical Device Reprocessing Department (previously called Central Supply and Reprocessing Department), a state-of-the-art facility that helps provide even better patient care in the community. "Our Medical Device Reprocessing (MDRD) facility was 50 years old and external reviews confirmed
what we knew - that the space needed to be updated to meet our current standards," said Eric Hanna, President and CEO of ARH. "We were faced with two options: keep the service in-house or outsource to another facility. After careful analysis, it was clear that the best long-term and financial option was to renovate the MDRD to maintain the service in-house." The MDRD provides reprocessing of reusable medical devices for ORs, Ambulatory Care Clinics,
the Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, the Family Health Team and the Inpatient Unit. The total cost of the renovation was $2,185,000. ARH received a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care capital grant of $1,793,600, with the rest being paid for through ARH parking lot proceeds. "Our government's nearly $1.8 million capital funding is a much-needed infrastructure investment to modernize ARH's MDRD facility and technologies,"

The renovation began in August 2018 and was completed on March 2019. The new space consists of three rooms: decontamination, sterilization and prep and pack. JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com What was supposed to be an information session on flood recovery turned into an outcry for prevention of future floods. The County of Renfrew hosted a Public Town Hall Meeting at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre on May 13 that drew about 100 people, including some residents who raised concerns about what could be done for future crises. A state of emergency declaration has been in place in the county since April 28. There were some in the crowd who were more concerned what measures will be taken to prevent flooding from happening again. The residents called for an independent public inquiry to see what can be done to control water levels throughout the Ottawa River watershed, so that release from the Northern dams doesn't bottleneck on the Ottawa River over the stretch between Pembroke and Arnprior. Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy told the crowd that while the residents' concerns were warranted, their main focus right now should be to get through the current disaster and recovery. White Lake resident Rick Armishaw was in attendance when he heard this, and spoke up, saying while the panel

was making good points on recovery, they needed to listen to what the residents were saying. "I appreciate all the information that has been given here today by the officials," he told the panel. "However, there
needs to be a connect between what the residents want to know and what you are telling us. The province may have some of the answers, but I think the people want to hear those answers from our local elected officials."
Armishaw said he has a few neighbours who have been severely affected by the flood, and has spent lots of time helping them with recovery and building barriers. The information session highlighted the many services available to those affected by the flood. The speakers provided briefings on the history of this year's flood, which began in mid-April, as well as sharing hygienic and healthrelated tips to keep in mind during recovery. Community volunteer and panel member Fred Blackstein, who assisted with the 1998 ice storm that resulted in at least 30 casualties, compared the storm with the current flooding. "While there haven't been as many seriously injured during the flood, it can still be just as damaging as the ice storm," he said. "While back in 1998 there were tree branches snapped, roofs blown away and basements flooded, at least then the real estate was left untouched for the most part. The same cannot be said for the crisis we are facing now." Warden Murphy expressed her condolences to everyone affected by this natural disaster. "From the bottom of my heart, I am very sorry for those of you who are going through this," she said. "We are not out of this yet, but we are hopeful it will end soon." Cheryl Gallant, MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke told the crowd that while the crisis could last several weeks, there will be moments where residents can catch their breath and reinforce their residences from any further damage.

COACH FROM ARNPRIOR WINS U.S. HOCKEY AWARD DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com A former hockey player from Arnprior has won a national coaching award in the U.S. Cornell University's Doug Derraugh is this year's recipient of the American Hockey Coaches Association women's division Coach of the Year. He was previously recognized with the win in 2010. "This award is really a coaching staff of the year award," said Derraugh, back at the upstate New York university after the gala evening in Naples, Florida. "They are deeply involved in everything we do. And we have a really supportive staff and an administration that is very supportive of women's ice hockey." This year's club reached the semifinals in NCAA National Collegiate Championship following a record of 24-5-6. Derraugh has coached no other team yet had amassed a record of 267-149-42. He also thanked his parents and took a few moments to reflect on his childhood in Arnprior where he worked at the hockey rink. He is married to Louise, a Perreault from Braeside who was on Canada's national track and field team and earned a scholarship to Arizona State university.
Doug Derraugh/submitted Eldon Lindsay/Cornell Athletics Left: Arnprior's Doug Derraugh won a national coaching award in the U.S. recently. He is with the women's hockey team at Cornell University. Right: Doug Derraugh of Arnprior is presented the coach of the year award in women's college hockey by Katie Million, director of USA Hockey's women's national teams. "My parents sacrificed a lot for me to pursue the sport I love so much," he said, adding that his father Don was assistant coach on many teams growing up. "Glenn Arthur helped me a lot. I practiced all the time at the rink. Drove the Zamboni and worked at the parks. He was very accommodating for me." Derraugh likes to think a little bit of every coach he had - from Dale Fridgen to Murph MacIntyre to 42 coaches during his 13
years in Europe - made him into the coach he is now. All come from different backgrounds, different regions of the world, and have their own take on the game. He considers himself a team-oriented coach who looks for selfless players with strong work ethic. "It's about character on and off the ice. In the end we are looking for good people," he said. "Cornell is one of the top schools in the country, so we try to
recruit good all-around people." Observers say Derraugh is calm behind the bench. He's not one to explode over a call. It was the same during his playing days. The key for him is to not let players get too excited while still keeping them motivated and passionate. The latter he finds fairly easy with women's hockey. "They are playing it for the love of the game. There's no real profession-
al hockey for them to go to. They do it for fun." Professional hockey, a jump to the NHL, is not on Derraugh's mind at the moment, although he has had some opportunities to move ahead. He and Louise wanted to settle down after bouncing from team to team in Europe. They have three children to maintain a home base for (his youngest, Matteas, played junior A with Pembroke Lumber Kings last year).
It has been said that coaching women's hockey requires better communication skills. Telling men to go do a drill is straightforward; they do it to the best of their abilities. But sometimes women expect an explanation. "I've had that doing drills in practice. They'll say, 'Why are we doing this?' And I have to think about it. Yeah, why are we doing this one? I think it's helped me." Don recalled his son's junior years in Arnprior and earlier - before attending college at Cornell and pro hockey in Europe rhyming off the names of local teammates or players about the same age: Daryle Meek, Chris Clarke, Danny Fridgen, Paul Sly, John MacIntyre, Kevin Rampton, Louise's brother Mike, and many more. "When Trevor Timmins (Montreal Canadiens' assistant GM) was with the Sens, he asked Doug to come back from Germany to try out. He thought about it but without a contract, if he got hurt in tryouts, he couldn't go back to Germany," Don said. "Today, Doug could easily be able to play in the NHL." Comparing him to Kyle Turris of Nashville Predators, Doug was smaller but high-skilled. A good skater who can score goals is much prized in today's NHL. Doug and Louise visit Arnprior fairly often; Ithaca is less than five hours away.

OPINION EDITORIAL
The arrival of warmer weather brings with it increased traffic on our roads as people hit the highways after a long winter. Canada Road Safety Week, May 14-20, is a good opportunity to have a look at the numbers and consider ways to improve the situation for everyone. The campaign is part of the broader Canada's Road Safety Strategy 2025, which aims to make Canada's roads the safest in the world. So far this year, 58 people have died on Ontario Provincial Police-patrolled roads. Speed, alcohol/drugs, inattentive driving and lack of seatbelt use are linked to almost half (45 per cent) of the deaths. There were 97 road fatalities this time last year, with more than half (53 per cent) of the deaths linked to - Thomas Carrique, these same causal factors. And while police are OPP Commissioner relieved to see a significant decrease in preventable road fatalities, they caution that poor behaviours on the road can easily tip the scales in the wrong direction. In 2018, more than half of the 332 deaths on OPP-patrolled roads were attributed to speed, alcohol/drugs, inattentive driving and lack of seatbelt use. Canada Road Safety Week is an annual enforcement and education-driven initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. The campaign aims to increase public compliance with safe driving and reduce injuries and save lives on our roads. This week and always, OPP officers will be highly visible in their efforts to keep roads safe, but they are hoping to see road users achieve this goal on their own rather than through enforcement. "Canada Road Safety Week is an effective traffic enforcement initiative, however it is only part of the solution to saving lives. It is important that everyone take responsibility to ensure safety on our roads. Make a commitment to obey speed limits, wear your seatbelt and never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs, or while distracted," said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique. Solicitor General Sylvia Jones reminds drivers to have respect while on the road. "Driving is a privilege that requires your full attention when behind the wheel. It takes a conscious effort from all drivers to limit distractions to avoid potential injuries. Violating the 'rules of the road' is a major cause of collisions so we all need to respect the law to ensure road safety. Make driving safely your number 1 priority."

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY EDUCATION CUTS ARE SHORT-SIGHTED To the editor: For those expecting the Doug Ford Progressive Conservatives to cut government as deeply as was done during the Mike Harris years, the recent budget comes as a surprise in continuing to increase government spending. Yet the budget still bites hard, particularly where it proposes cutting back on classrooms. The Ford government budget proposes to increase classroom sizes from grades 4 to 12 and for high school students to take four of their courses through online. Rather than making government services leaner and more efficient, these cuts arguably instead achieve nothing more than simply passing existing costs of education onto the private citizens of tomorrow. In-person learning alongside other students, including in specialized and intimate smaller class sizes, is conducive to adolescent learning. It also
strengthens community bonds in a way that no online course can, especially in rural small-town settings like with Renfrew County. There are wiser but bolder cuts that could be made to reduce inefficiency and duplication in Ontario's education sector: eliminate the Roman Catholic school board (and compensate the teachers currently working in it). The proposed cuts to Ontario's classrooms are not wise investments in Ontario's next generation; they are instead shortsighted fiscal gain at the expense of long-term pain to the students of rural communities.
STEFAN KLIETSCH RENFREW
NATURE PROVIDES ITS OWN FLOODING SOLUTION To the editor: This letter refers to the May 2 editorial "Flooding reminds us we share this earth." Quote " ... we need to protect Mother Nature before it's too late." Does
Mother Nature not provide us with solutions to the destructive flooding many are experiencing? If we look at the forests in the area there are numerous still-water ponds that have formed in Gillies Grove and the Macnamara conservation areas. Trees and undergrowth consume a vast quantity of water and the soil acts as a "sponge" to store water. To cut down canopied oldgrowth trees, as is planned by Ontario Ministry of Health to develop a new nursing home (not an expansion as announced earlier) will contribute to, and exacerbate, flooding and global warming. Replacing trees with asphalt and shingles will see added flow to the storm sewers and into the rivers.

A FLOOD FAMILY'S OVERWHELMING MOMENT DEREK DUNN derek.dunn @metroland.com The moment was overwhelming both literally and figuratively. The L'Abbe family is similar to many hundreds of families doing all they could to push back the flood waters that drowned the Ottawa River and some tributaries over the past few weeks. It was gruelling, it was harrowing, and at times it brought them to the brink. Currently, there is something of a reprieve. As folks on social media talk about the future of building homes on floodplains, the L'Abbes await what waterfront residents call "the northern melt." A second, smaller flood, is sure to come. Should Christine and Mark and 11-year-old Ciara abandon their long-time dream home in Rhoddy's Bay? "We can't be doing this every spring. We're too old and it's too stressful," Christine said. "And we can't keep asking people for help. I'm really quite concerned." The house was an 800-sq. ft. cottage when Christine moved in some 28 years ago.
INTERIOR
"Hawaii has never exceeded my sunsets in Rhoddy's Bay."
– Christine L'Abbe
Winterized, yes, but a tad rustic. For 11 years she saved every penny to replace it. Then in 2002, a state-of-the-art residence "auto everything; the blinds were electric" - replaced the cottage. A home that almost matched the view. "I've been to Hawaii twice and Hawaii has never exceeded my sunsets in Rhoddy's Bay," she said, adding that she recently took another panoramic with her phone and cried; it could be among the last. "It was breaking my heart." There has been little time for tears lately, she indicated. Mark, a firefighter, was at the house every day during the flooding. Plenty of friends and family were there to help. This isn't a worst-case scenario story whatsoever. Grandparents have been immensely helpful. While friends were in Arizona, Christine and Ciara stayed
in their home, avoiding the news and social media. "She doesn't need that. Her and I were cuddling and chatting and playing games," she said. "We are so fortunate to have friends and grandparents and Mark's a phenomenal man. He has such a wide circle that want to give back to him." Even so, the flood of 2019 didn't discriminate. It has been widely reported that property owners and authorities were prepared, at least in comparison to the flood two years prior. (The L'Abbes built a $26,000 retaining wall just in case another 100-year flood hit.) Yet the one "sour point" for Christine was when she called the township on April 18 at 9:30 a.m., asking for sandbags and sand. The next day an unexpected landslide hit Rhoddy's Bay from the backend. She got a return call five days later. "I know it's hard to predict these things, but by Tuesday I'm in restoration." For the next week or so the rain kept coming. So did the help, everyone from close friends to kids at Ciara's St. Joseph elementary school and everyone in between. The couple didn't eat for three days. Mark

rarely slept for more than an hour, knowing the sump pumps needed close monitoring. They had to work at least as hard as those who were helping them. Fuel in the form of pizza and doughnuts were needed; morale had to be bolstered. Then came Saturday, April 27. The sandbag dyke was seven high, three wide. But the wind was blustery and relentless that morning. The frigid water pounded against the wall, taking out sandbags here, then there. Twenty-five people were pressed against the wall that morning, all focused on holding back the wind and river. "You couldn't pick up
enough (sandbags)," Christine said. "It was just so overwhelming." That's when she looked past the wall and all those who were deep into the struggle. And she saw Mark. "He looked so defeated," she said. "I made my way over to him and grabbed him and looked him in the eye and I said: It's you and me and Ciara. It's a beautiful home. We just have to make sure everyone is safe. "That snapped me to the realization it's only material things. And we are fortunate, I know," she said, her voice quivering. "We are going to win. People worked so hard. We had

3,000 sandbags on our property. Then we did another 3,000. We were machines." The discussion taking place on whether to rebuild or not has many angles. Can provincial governments afford to buy out homeowners? Can municipalities afford to lose the higher taxes waterfront owners pay? Will more people abandon rural areas for cities? Is this really the new normal? Waterfront owners like the L'Abbes are wrestling with those macro questions too. But they are also dealing with questions that cut to core of their lives. It must feel overwhelming.

SCHOOLS RAISE $1,300 FOR NEW NURSING HOME GAIL OKUM Walter Zadow and St. John XXIII schools partnered with the Opportunity Shop to raise money for the redevelopment of The Grove Nursing Home. During Education Week from May 6 to 10, the two schools raised more than $1,300. With Mother's Day following on May 12, the Opportu-
nity Shop set up a store in the schools' auditoriums for the students to purchase jewelry or scarves for the important women in their lives. The gifts were wrapped by volunteers and put in decorated bags. Kindergarten to Grade 2 students from Walter Zadow had the chance to shop on the Tuesday, and St. John XXIII School made their purchases on the Friday.
The theme for the Catholic Education Week this year was "Living as Joyful Disciples", and the students did just that. With smiles and excitement they demonstrated their love for the important women in their lives by purchasing lovely gifts, as well as contributing funds toward the redevelopment of our community's nursing home.
This event was a great success and an important education on love and caring for others in our community. Walter Zadow and St. John XXIII schools partnered with the Opportunity Shop to raise money for the redevelopment of The Grove Nursing Home. They raised more than $1,300.

Michael Runtz photo The tiny but stunning flowers of Wild Ginger, which hide on the ground under the wildflower's distinctive leaves, tell a most unusual fib. lilies, and white trilliums (the latter two found only in bud that day) bloom early to exploit the sun's warmth before tree leaves open, replacing sunlight with shade. The Macnamara Trail is rich with spring ephemerals, which vanish as soon as darkness dominates their domain. This year, those colourful wildflowers are at least one week behind their usual blooming times. I was particularly looking forward to seeing wild ginger in flower. A small escarpment bordering the trail is richly adorned with them, and when we arrived at that site their fuzzy heart-shaped leaves were found in abundance. But like the trilliums, only large unopened buds were visible. Only after extensive searching were a few open flowers located. The wine-coloured blooms lie on the ground under the leaves, and so are easily overlooked. They are well worth the effort to locate, however, for inside each lies an intricate pattern. A close inspection brings to the nose a rather pungent odour, not unlike that owned by decaying fungi. That unpleasant smell is there for a purpose. While many wildflowers release pleasant perfumes to attract pollinators, wild ginger attracts fungus
gnats, tiny flies that lay their eggs on rotting mushrooms. The gnats roam wild ginger blossoms looking in vain for a place to lay their eggs, transferring pollen in the process. This exploitation is called "brood site deception" because the insects are tricked into thinking they found food for their larvae. The flies leave disappointed while the wily wildflower achieves its pollination goal. Red trilliums, soon to be in bloom, also subscribe to this deceitful strategy. However, their odour doesn't resemble decaying fungus, but rotting flesh, because flesh flies are their dupes. In the USA red trilliums are also known as stinking Benjamin. I don't know who old Ben was, but he sure had one heck of a body problem! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the international television series Wild by Nature, and has written and/or photographically illustrated 13 books on natural history topics.

The excessively high water of the neighbouring Ottawa River resulted in parts of the trail being flooded, making boots a necessity. And, unexpectedly, colourful wildflowers were absent over much of the trailside terrain. The squeals of yellowbellied sapsuckers accompanied us all through our walk. These aptly named woodpeckers drill columns of holes in trees, lapping up the resulting sap. The return of sapsuckers is soon followed by ruby-throated hummingbirds, which depend heavily on the woodpeckers' wells for nutrition until nectar-rich wildflowers come into bloom. Eventually we came across sizable patches of bloodroot and sharp-lobed hepatica. Bloodroots are one of my favourite wildflowers. Their white blooms with bright yellow stamens are beautiful to the eye; their leaves are sculptured marvels. When the floral bud first emerges from the ground, it is tightly wrapped inside a heavily veined and sinuous leaf, just like a newborn baby swathed in a soothing blanket. Bloodroots, like hepaticas, spring beauties, trout-

A huge thank you to family and friends who helped celebrate Joe Quilty’s 102nd birthday! In particular, a big shout out to TerriLynn Smith for organizing a musical event at Quail Creek with musicians Randy Foster (who also looked after sound set-up), Dennis Harrington, Paul Devries, Paddy Legris, and Jim Hunter. Joe’s Ottawa Valley Gals (step dancers) Terri-Lynn Smith, Tammy-Lyn Ferguson, and Sarah Dick surprised Joe with a dance reminiscent of their years together when the dancers were young and Joe was younger. Marikje and Ali Devries showed the audience that step dancing is still alive in the Valley. Thank you one and all! Thank you to the staff of Quail Creek who adjusted their schedules to make the day possible. The kitchen staff served a beautiful birthday cake and beverages and provided a lovely luncheon for family and friends after the fiddle and dance party. Thank you to the residents of Quail Creek who helped make the day memorable.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Susan Burns-McIntyre photo The Arnprior Dragon Boat Club is looking for new paddlers for this season. They are holding a "Meet and Greet" on May 26 at the Arnprior Curling Club.
DRAGON BOAT CLUB SEEKS NEW PADDLERS SUSAN BURNS-MCINTYRE Looking for a different summer sport? Why not try dragon boat paddling! Imagine 20 paddlers in a sleek, narrow boat. The drummer (coach) calls to take it away and instantly each paddler moves in unison. The boat lifts and surges forward with each stroke. It is not just about the race; it is about the challenge; it is about being in the water with friends! The club has three crews paddling again this season - a competitive crew which is recruiting fit individuals who paddle three times a week, Monday and Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. and Sunday mornings, and compete in about four festivals each season. If you simply love being out on the water, having fun and getting a good, allround workout, there are two recreational crews that will start paddling as soon as the docks are in place at the Arnprior Marina. One crew paddles Monday and Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. and the other crew paddles Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8 p.m. The cost to join for the season is $150 and crews usually paddle until Thanksgiving. Life-jackets and paddles are provided by the club and no experience is required. If you simply wish to come out and try paddling, the first session is free and it will be $10 per session thereafter (these fees will be applied to your membership if you decide to join). The club is holding a "meet and greet" on May 26 from 6-8 p.m. in the lounge at the Arnprior Curling Club. Everyone is welcome to join us. If you would like more information about paddling, please contact the club at arnpriordragonboat@gmail.com. Susan Burns-McIntyre is the president of the Arnprior Dragon Boat Club.
EVERY SPRING WOULD BRING NEW LIFE TO MOTHER
LONG, DREARY WINTERS WERE ALWAYS DIFFICULT DURING 1930S, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
The ditches had dried up. The fields were ready to plant. Each day I could feel the warmth of spring all around us. With the coming of the longer, sunny days, Mother became a different person. All winter, it was like someone had pulled a window-blind over her face, only occasionally letting in a bit of light. For the most part when the days and nights were dark and dreary, it was like Mother was waiting for something good to happen. And then the winter was over, and spring was here at last. Audrey and I were sitting alone on the swing in the grape arbour. Buds were just starting to come out, and soon there would be enough leaf-cover to make a haven for us
outside where we could eat a meal and get away from the hot sun, or the steaming kitchen. I could hear Mother, through the opened window, singing a wordless tune, and the sounds of pots scraping on the Findlay Oval, and dishes against dishes. A feeling of complete contentment settled over me, but I wondered about Mother's change at the end of winter and the coming of spring. I asked Audrey if she, so much older and so much wiser than I, noticed it too, or was it just my imagination. My sister paused for a few minutes, as she gathered her thoughts. "It's in the wintertime she misses New York the most," she said. Much of her answer escaped me ... much beyond the reasoning of a five or six-yearold. But I listened anyway. "She feels shut out from the rest of the world out here in Northcote, because the car is in the drive shed up on blocks, it's a long, cold trip into Renfrew in the cutter, so she only goes in on Saturdays to deliver her eggs." She paused again, and I thought that was the end of it. But she went on. "Did you ever notice how she reads and
rereads that Philadelphia Inquirer paper that comes in the mail? Well, that connects her with everything going on in the place she left to come to live here in Northcote. She gets lonesome for her friend Rosie, and I think she feels trapped in the winter ... looking out at so much snow, and she worries about fire burning the house down, and her relatives in Ottawa who can't come out to visit. So, you see, Mary, winter isn't the best time for our Mother." I felt the utmost contentment knowing that winter was behind us, and that Mother would once again be her happy and contented self. Her seeds had come from her order to the Steele-Briggs catalogue, and were starting to sprout in the little square boxes on a table beside the back door. The rolledup braided rug had been removed from the parlour door where it had been since the first blasts of winter, and we could now sit on the horsehair settee and look at picture albums or read. Soon the spring housecleaning would begin ... the kitchen curtains washed and starched, and the braided rugs hung on the fence outside and beaten with the broom and rolled up for the summer. The sun had risen overhead and was beating down through the vines of the grape arbour, and I could feel myself dozing off, leaning against my sister. And I was overcome with a feeling of joy and contentment. Mother was back ... everything was right in my world. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? Go to https://www.smashwords.com and type MaryRCook for ebook purchase details, or if you would like a hard copy, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.ca. Mary is a longtime writer with several books in print and in electronic copies. Mary Cook's Memories appears as a regular column.
