From May 1st until September 30th there are limitations on the date and time that you can water your lawn.

• Odd number houses may water on odd calendar days • Even numbered houses may water on even numbered days • Water from 5:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

You are only permitted to water from one hose connection. Watering from more than one connection simply uses too much water at once.

Watering significant amounts of new grass or sod are exempt from these provisions for one week. Any other violations of the by-law may result in a fine.

LIBERAL MINISTER BRINGS FUNDING TO TOWNSHIP PROJECT DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com A federal cabinet minister dropped by the construction site of a new township office and community centre in McNab/Braeside, and she brought money.

Canadian taxpayers gave a grant worth $364,800 and a loan for just over $2.4 million for the complex not far from the existing 54-year-old administration building on Russett Drive. The money is from the Green Municipal Fund, which is a partnership between the federal Rural Economic Development and Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).

The township qualifies for the fund because it is building a net-zero energy office that includes a geothermal heat pump system, LED lighting with occupancy sensors, and design considerations for natural light and passive solar heating.

MADAWASKA BRIDGE WORK STARTED MONDAY DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com Take extra care crossing the Madawaska Bridge over the next couple of years.

Starting Monday, June 17, construction on the bridge began. The countyrun project will take two years to complete, with a winter shutdown of the project expected from mid-

November 2019 to midApril 2020. The work is expected to be completed by mid-December 2020.

The bridge will be reduced to two lanes of traffic during construction, with access to businesses and residences maintained.

"Please drive carefully and obey all construction signs," said Michael Behm with the public works department at the County of Renfrew.

Council approved staff to hire Smiths Construction (a division of Miller Group) for $567,000 worth of paving on two streets: • Edey Street from Daniel to Landrigan;

Two other companies put in higher bids.

Also during the June 10 meeting at town hall, council approved the purchase of a single axle plow truck from Freightliner North Bay for almost $269,000.

The town was successful in selling three older fire trucks to help pay for the new ladder. The 1998 truck went to Nebraska for $60,000; the aerial to east Ottawa for $30,000; and the van to New Jersey for $16,000.

The new truck cost $1.4 million.

A popular business with fingers in several pies is selling off a portion.

Antrim Truck Stop has a buyer in place for the sales and garage part of the business, behind the restaurant and gas pumps.

The only part being sold is Western Star Trucks, a transport dealership and

repair garage.

"The restaurant is not sold at all," said owner Gail Cameron. The bakery, gas and diesel pumps and station are also remaining in the Cameron family.

Gail's husband, Jack, died in December. He ran the dealership portion.

At the June 10 council meeting, staff brought forward a request from Antrim to severe the property into three parts. The new

owners of the six-acre dealership, Rouge River Transportation from the Markham area, needs a right of way to exit the property.

The severance allows for that. It also leaves an eightacre portion of land with a storm pond on its own. If a buyer wants to put a commercial enterprise on it, they will have to work out all services but the existing watermain.

Because the 8-acre surplus property is asking for a "holding" on its mixeduse commercial/employment zoning, a public meeting will be held July 8 to hear any concerns.

NO JAIL FOR BACKYARD FIRES DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com A 40-year-old Arnprior bylaw that includes possible jail time for a backyard fire is getting an overhaul.

"We feel that's a bit draconian," Chief Jeff Crawford said during his presentation at the June 10 council meeting.

Since 1978, the bylaw "recreational open air burning" has required residents obtain a permit, and have the fire contained in a pit or steel container with a "spark arrestor." It must be 25-feet from any building, fence or other combustible; have an adult present until it is extinguished; and not begin until 30 minutes after sunrise and put out 30 minutes before sunset.

Bylaw 3058-78 reads: "Any person who contravenes any provisions of this bylaw shall, upon conviction thereof, be liable

for a fine of not less than $10 and not exceeding $50 exclusive of costs or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 21 days or to both fine and imprisonment."

Crawford's report recommends that an updated bylaw prevent open air fires on town property aimed primarily at waterfront visitors building fires for cooking picnic lunches unless approved by the fire department.

"Many instances of people setting fires at Robert Simpson Park have been identified where there has been improper extinguishment, hot coals, ashes and embers left behind," the report reads.

The updated bylaw would allow people with smaller backyards to enjoy a fire, since the distance would be reduced from 25 feet to 12. New burn times would be 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., which better aligns with the noise bylaw.

Staff is also proposing fine of $75, whereas other comparable municipalities see a range of $200 to $2,000; some forbid backyard fires entirely.

Permits would remain free of charge, but residents must obtain one from the fire department.

Crawford encouraged residents to be respectful of neighbours, and that the three-strikes rule will apply. A first-time request to extinguish followed by a second-time permit ban will see a third-time fine.

Mayor Walter Stack has long been in favour of changing the bylaw.

Coun. Ted Strike is opposed to backyard fires, saying smoke gets into his house and he's forced to close all the windows and turn on the air-conditioner.

"It will take some educating, but basically respect your neighbours," Stack said.

The updated bylaw will be voted upon during an upcoming meeting.

FIRSTGENERATION, BUT CANADIAN NONETHELESS To the editor: With July 1 fast approaching, we make ready to celebrate our 152nd Canada Day. My parents, along with an infant daughter, came to Canada in early 1959. Arriving at the Halifax Harbour, N.S., they made their way to Ottawa. My father, with the help of my late Uncle Fahid, found housing and a job. I was born in 1967, our 100th anniversary of Canada's Confederation ... the fifth of seven children.

People refer to me as a first-generation Canadian since my parents, although Canadian citizens, were born elsewhere. My parents decided to gift me with the name Shriefe pronounced Sh-Ree-Fee, roughly translated to "honesty." I was named after my mother's favourite sister, my late Aunt Shriefe. In my youth, I dreamed of changing my name. When I married my husband Jeff, I found my opportunity but decided not to. I loved my Aunt Shriefe, and it would have broken my mother's heart.

I took my husband's name though; Mrs. Woods is easier to say.

Growing up, I felt a constant struggle to find my identity as a Canadian.

Not from my parents, but by my fellow Canadians. I dreaded meeting people and introducing myself for the first time. Say Shriefe and you get your first ques-

tion of many. "What did you say?" or "Pardon?" I respectfully repeated my name, saying "Sh-Ree-Fee ... think of the actor Omar Sharif ... the female version of Sharif is Shriefe."

OK, different spelling, but you get my point (Note: Millennials have no idea who I am talking about).

The next question, "Where are you from?" My reply: "Ottawa." Then, "No, where were you born?" Again, "Ottawa ... the Ottawa Civic Hospital ... my three kids were born there too!" I quickly add, "Do you mean my heritage? Lebanese." The normal response ... is I am told I am Lebanese. What? Did I miss something?

I am Canadian, firstgeneration but Canadian nonetheless. Taking pride in my heritage, but even more so my nationality. I take pride in my country, my homeland, my people and even occasionally my government ... pun intended. I rejoice our military and weep for the loss of our fallen soldiers yesterday, today and in the future. I sing our anthem with joy and enthusiasm.

So, in closing, from one very proud Canadian, Happy Canada Day. May you celebrate surrounded by family and friends this joyous time and be thankful to those who came before you to make you one of Canada's great people.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY HAVE RESPECT FOR FUNERAL PROCESSIONS To the editor: In the not too distant past, when a funeral cortege was passing pedestrians stopped, vehicles travelling in the opposite direction pulled to the side of the road and stopped. I was always awed by the respect for the dead and the consideration for the mourners displayed by this simple custom.

A few days ago I attended a funeral at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Renfrew. As the coffin was being placed in the hearse, numerous cars, motorcycles and several large dump trucks passed. Since the church is located at the corner of Lochiel St. and Lisgar St., there is a three way stop.

Consequently, all vehicles were either braking or accelerating. It was tremendously noisy.

Although they stopped at the stop sign, NOT ONE MOTORIST STOPPED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT A FUNERAL WAS IN PROGRESS. A few slowed down slightly, as though the

thought had crossed their mind but nevertheless, they did not stop. If only one driver had been brave enough to stop, the example would have been set.

Others would also have stopped, if not because of the example, then because their way was impeded by the stopped vehicle.

Perhaps you might argue that these motorists were unaware of what was happening. If that is the case they had better relinquish their driver's licenses because they are both deaf and blind. The toll bells were ringing, the hearse, the funeral directors, the priests and attendants were on the roadway behind the hearse, family members and at least a hundred mourners were on the sidewalk and the church steps. There was no shortage of audible and visible clues that a funeral was in progress.

It seems to me, that the reason no one stopped was because society has become so disrespectful, so self centered, so desensitized to the anguish of others that we are no longer a caring, compassionate peo-

ple. In my opinion, a truly sad commentary on society!

Incidentally, at that funeral, there was a whole class of seven year old children in attendance. What a wonderful opportunity was lost that day to teach these young children respect for the living and the dead.

Obviously, the bells were not tolling for you that day but someday they will. On that day, I hope that citizens who happen to witness your funeral will stop to acknowledge your death, show some respect for the dead and consideration and compassion for your family and friends as they mourn your demise.

Please, the next time you witness a funeral in progress, consider taking a few minutes to be a caring compassionate and sensitive person.

Connecting for Better Care What a team! Arnprior Regional Health is all about partnerships and finding ways to work together. We were an early adopter of the ‘rural health hub’ concept, bringing health care providers together to plan and deliver the very best care for our patients, residents and clients.

Our vision sums things up: Together we create a healthy community.

This Report to the Community shares updates from Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital, The Grove Nursing Home the Primary Health Care Centre and our many community programs. Together, we are your partner in health!

SHARING OUR EXPERTISE

Qua Quality is our #1 focus. We have a detailed quality improvement plan to keep us on tra track. For example, we initiated new bedside shift reporting to ensure better team communication and give patients and families the opportunity to be directly co iinvolved in their care. We were honoured to be recognized by Cancer Care Ontario for meeting targets to reduce the time between screening and cancer diagnosis.

We were pleased to welcome the Honorable Christine Elliott, Minister of Health in March.

Minister Elliott came to discuss integration and partnerships and shared her impressions in a tweet:

High Tech, High Touch. This past year, we continued to expand the patient electronic health record which will result in safer care. And we have better links to clinicians across the province and digital health records through ConnectingOntario.

We also added electronic records for our team working in Assisted Living. All these improvements will ultimately give patients full access to their own medical record.

Improving Safety. A $2 million renovation to our Medical Devices Reprocessing Department ensures we uphold the highest standards of patient safety and infection control for our surgical patients.

We also received MoHLTC infrastructure funding for ongoing improvements.

Helping Hands! At The Grove, some staff have received additional training to provide extra, more individualized resident support when needed.

•

Expanded Care. Speaking of The Grove, we continue to move forward with redevelopment, including 36 new beds, bringing the total to 96.

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.

We’re listening. The Patient & Family Advisory Council and The Grove’s Family and Resident Councils provide valuable insights and advice. They are involved from the beginning at the decision-making table.

What a Team

We want to be a workplace of choice by listening to our staff and celebrating the great work being done each day.

Specialized training programs in areas such as dementia and safe patient and resident lifts are making a difference.

And did we mention that our amazing team raised $1500 for the Calabogie Strong Tornado Relief Fund? They also provided support to this spring’s flood victims. It is important to help our neighbours and friends.

Beyond Our Walls

We strive for excellence and are rewarded in our jobs when our patients, residents, clients and families tell us we are doing an excellent job. At The Grove, 95% of residents and families said they would recommend the nursing home to others. Our most recent data shows that 78.6% of patients would definitely recommend our Emergency Department to others. Over the last year, 88% of patients stated that they were definitely treated with courtesy and respect.

We are listening to the needs of the community and working with them to plan new and innovative approaches to care.

On October 1st, the Seniors Active Living Centre opened, thanks to a great collaboration with community leaders and partners including the Town of Arnprior and the Township of McNab/Braeside. It provides support and programming that allow seniors to live independently. This was followed by the opening of the Men’s Shed in February, providing a unique space for local senior men to remain active and engaged.

The Adult Day Program now runs five days a week and we have added 12 additional spots for community members with dementia. A recent survey showed that 95% of clients and families were very satisfied with the friendliness and helpfulness of staff.

Caring Partners

People are always surprised to learn that the government does not pay for new medical equipment. That’s where the ARH Foundation and the ARH Auxiliary come in – along with our generous community.

This past year, 152 Auxiliary members donated 15,672 hours of service at the hospital and The Grove. In March, these incredible volunteers presented a cheque for $150,000 to ARH for capital equipment needs. The HELPP Committee also donated $30,000 for hospital equipment. And the Auxiliary has pledged $600,000 over the next five years toward the new and expanded Grove Nursing Home.

TURTON, Irene (December 29, 1923 - June 13, 2019) With heavy hearts we announce that our mother, Irene Turton passed away in Ottawa on Thursday evening. She went on to join our father, Roy Turton, her husband of almost 70 years, who predeceased her January 10, 2019.

Reunited once again, our parents leave to mourn their children: Peter (Kyla), Doug (Bev), Jane Hart (late Peter), Andy (Brenda), John, Barb Rozman (Al) and Ellen Thompson (Chris); their 13 grandchildren as well as two greatgrandchildren. Also survived by a sister, Rita King (Jim). Daughter of the late Clifford and Mary (nee McNeil) Cronk, mother was also predeceased by her two brothers: Elmer (late Gisele) and Cameron (Cathy) as well as her sister, Isabel. GEDDES, Grant 1947-2019 It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Grant Geddes on June 12, 2019 at the age of 72. Beloved husband to Eileen Geddes (Cardiff) of 48 years. Devoted and dearly loved father of Jay (Fiona), Rhonda (David) Summers and Bow (Jill). Adored grandfather of his seven grandsons, Grant and Jordan Summers, Noah and Cooper Geddes and Rory, Grady and Crosby Geddes, who he loved with all his heart. Predeceased by his parents Ralph and Jessie Geddes. Survived by his sister Ruth (Lindsay) Stewart, his brother Dean (Marlene) Geddes, and in-laws Marie and Billy Smith and Glen and Marie Cardiff. He will also be missed by nieces, nephews, and friends.

Grant was a hardworking, extremely generous, fiercely strong, humble, supportive, loyal and respected man. He was a reserved and private person but he really enjoyed having one-on-one conversations with people; many were surprised by his wisdom, vast knowledge on various topics, and his witty disposition. He often surprised people with his wise cracks and oneliners! He enjoyed telling jokes and recounting stories to his family and friends, often leaving everyone in stitches! He truly left a positive impression on people; he was remarkable. Grant’s passions were vast. He loved going on long drives and travelling with Eileen, boating on Hurds Lake, trying new restaurants, and he was an avid reader who kept up on current events. He particularly loved working outside in the yard at home on his hill, down at the creek and in the meadow. He died doing what he loved, which is consoling as he didn’t suffer, but painful as it was so sudden and far too early for him to be taken from us. Above all, Grant was an avid supporter of his seven grandsons. He loved being a part of their lives and watching them grow up; he couldn’t wait to see them to hear all their updates! He travelled around the Ottawa Valley cheering them on in their many sports, providing encouragment and praise. He particularly enjoyed following their hockey, going to various arenas around Renfrew County, in Ottawa and beyond, which made for a busy winter given all 7 grandsons played. His grandsons will miss not seeing grandpa in the stands cheering them on, and many of the fans will miss his commentating in the stands as well! Respecting Grant’s wishes, there will be no visitation, only a private cremation. We will forever miss him and he will always stay close in our hearts.

The appointment of next year’s auditor and the election of Directors for 2019/2020 will take place. On June 6, members of the Stormont Dundas & Grenville (SD&G) OPP Community Street Crime Unit and Emergency Response Team officers executed a criminal code search warrant in McNab/ Braeside township.

Steven Couvieau, 44, of

McNab/Braeside was arrested and charged with: • Theft Under $5,000 (two counts) - SD&G theft of tractor occurrence; • Breach of Firearm Regulation - store firearm - warrant execution charges; • Unauthorized possession of a firearm; • Possession of a controlled substance (two counts).

He is to appear in Ontario Court of Justice on August 13, in Morrisburg, and July 17, 2019, in Renfrew Ontario Court of Justice.

VEHICLE CRASHES ON WHITE LAKE ROAD Emergency crews were at the scene of a single-vehicle collision on White Lake Road June 11.

Traffic was rerouted on both sides for several hours at a well-known S-curve below the Madawaska River. It eventually opened in late afternoon.

The accident site was located between Young and Reed roads, and appeared to be speed-related. Renfrew County Paramedics, Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police and the McNab/Braeside Fire Department were called to the scene around 2 p.m.

OPP did not return calls for further information.

MAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULT ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE On June 7, officers with the Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an assault call in the Township of Greater Madawaska. As a result of the investigation, Adam Homer, 39, of Ottawa, has been charged with assault. The accused was released on a promise to appear in Renfrew court on July 3.

The Renfrew detachment of the OPP investigated 304 calls for service.

Impaired driving On June 9, officers were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check in the Town of Arnprior. As a result of a traffic stop, Roddy Gilks, 50, of Ottawa, has been charged with impaired driving and operating a motor vehicle with blood-alcohol over 80. The accused was released on a promise to appear and will appear in Renfrew court July 3.

Traffic enforcement On June 3, an officer with the Renfrew OPP was conducting traffic enforcement

on Highway 17, in Horton Township. As a result of a traffic stop, Troy Hein, 49, of Arnprior was issued a summons for racing a motor vehicle with excessive speed, and will appear in Renfrew court July 19.
