EMC news – McNab-Braeside users of the Arnprior Public Library can breathe a sigh of relief. Township council agreed, on a 3-2 vote Tuesday, to approve a revised deal offered by Arnprior that would allow McNab-Braeside residents use of the library without having to pay the extra $60-a-household out-of-town fee. Council agreed to approve the agreement for the rest of this year as well as 2013. However, even councillors supporting the deal expressed concern about what the library and recreation deals with Arnprior would mean to future property tax levels in the township. Arnprior is expected to approve the deal at its council meeting Monday, June 25. The agreement ends several months of negotiations between the two municipalities over how and how much the township should pay for its residents to use the Nick Smith Centre and library. Council had almost a full house in attendance Tuesday, although the library supporters were much quieter than those at the recreation rally during the council meeting two weeks ago. The approval of the new deal was prompted in part by the approval of a two-year recreation deal. Deputy Mayor Christine Blimkie, who voted against the recreation deal, moved approval of a revised Arnprior library deal. “If the recreation users, who are far less than the library users, got what they want, the library supporters should get what they want too,” she said. Heat off summer election with new budget Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

EMC news - The passage of the provincial budget Wednesday put an end to talk of a summertime Ontario election. While hot air and rising temperatures dominated the land this week, similar can be said about Queen’s Park on Wednesday. The minority Liberal budget was finally approved, but not after a bitter session that saw all parties hurling blame at each other. “All’s well that ends well,” Premier Dalton McGuinty said during question period. Late last week, the Liberals threatened to call an election for July 19 if the NDP didn’t moderate some of their
last-minute demands for more changes to the budget. However, in the end, the two sides came up with a budget both could support to avoid a summer vote. The Liberals say their 2012 budget sets out a plan to transform and strengthen the public and broader public sectors – to change the way the government delivers services while providing better value for money and better results. The plan does not include across-the-board cuts to public services. The government is projecting deficits of $14.8 billion in 2012-13, $12.8 billion in 2013-14 and $10.1 billion in 2014-15. The government projects a $0.5 billion surplus in 2017-18.
PC Leader Tim Hudak said the week of posturing by the Liberals and NDP came at the expense of action to rein in spending and kick-start job creation. “Ontario is a better place than we have seen over the past seven days,” Hudak said. “Sadly, it is also a poorer place. Eight months since the last election and not a penny saved. Instead, the overspending continues, when we need urgent action to get our fiscal house in order,” he said. “The more we delay, the more our debt piles up – putting at risk the sustainability of priorities Ontarians care most about – such as quality health care and excellence in education.”
