Heat wave Drought could lead to ‘major disaster for farmers’, worries fire departments Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

EMC news – The drought afflicting area farmers is serious almost to the point of becoming critical, Renfrew County National Farmers Union (NFU) president Dave Mackay warned Tuesday. He suggested the situation could turn into a “major disaster if no rain is forthcoming soon. While the hot spell is expected to continue for the rest of the week, there are forecasts showing possible rain Sunday, although it could come with lightning. The sunny summer may be a delight for tourists and cottagers, but area fire departments are on high alert and have implemented complete fire bans in many rural municipalities because the forest is so dry. ning storms has boosted worries about possible forest fires in the area. There have already been a couple of bush fires, one in the Big Limestone Lake west of Calabogie and another in the Round Lake area in the last week, that had the potential of becoming more serious if the local fire departments hadn’t acted so quickly. The township of McNabBraeside has responded with a “temporary fire ban until further notice. The ban is complete, including backyards and campgrounds. Rural fire departments are also worried that fires left smouldering by careless campers and outdoor partygoers could spread into the forest.

EMC news – They’ll be here for a good time, not a long time. But they guarantee to raise a little hell while in town. Trooper is headlining the 158th Arnprior Fair, set for Aug. 9 to 12. Fair board member Murray Swaine is torqued to welcome the iconic Can-con band back to the Prior, saying his favourite song is 3 Dressed up as a 9, but that numerous classics also jump to mind. “I’m excited, Swaine said. “It’s great entertainment for a reasonable amount and there’s just so much more to see and do now (at the fair). Arnprior’s own Catalyst opens for Trooper on the fair’s Friday night, Aug. 10. Four former members of Hyrd Gunz joined up with a fifth to form the country rock band. A seasoned band, Catalyst has opened for Honeymoon Suite in the past and knows how to juice up a crowd.

The beer tent is back this year, after running dry in 2011. The stage will be moved closer to the tent making it possible for folks in the front seats to watch the band while enjoying a Don Cherry pop. Other front row seats will be reserved for non-drinkers. Another band at this year’s fair is Fifth Street. The country band from Renfrew plays Saturday night after the demolition derby. Prize money totals $3,000 in the demo derby, with some 60 cars expected. On Sunday afternoon the teen tribute All Stars – professional impersonators of Justin Bieber, Cody, Selena, Adele and Miss Swift – round out the musical entertainment. A contest at the newspaper office, 8 McGonigal St. W., offers free fair passes, a signed poster, backstage pass to meet and greet the performers, is underway. See MANY Page 2

Town Square planners to seek local sponsors Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

EMC news - Plans to upgrade an important link between the downtown and waterfront areas are at a stage where private sponsorship is being sought. The town’s community improvement and tourism advisory committee (CITAC) got the OK from council at Monday’s meeting to offer sponsorship forms to corporations, residents and small businesses. CITAC wants to improve the park area between the library and Madawaska Bridge with a tourist board (containing posters of upcoming events), a lighted decorative interlocking brick courtyard, and more. A town report presented to council noted a planning document and advice from an outside group point to the need for something along the lines of the “150th Anniversary Commemorative Town Square. See TOWN SQUARE Page 7
