Sweet home Arnprior The muskie is in the news this week for two completely different reasons. Letting a muskie die and making fun of it isn’t sitting well with some people. However, an upcoming muskie tournament will help a good cause and is a reminder that the White Pine Festival is only two week away. – Pages 6, 64

Council enthusiastic over Habitat for Humanity’s desire to build in town Theresa Fritz theresa.fritz@metroland.com
EMC news – Habitat for Humanity wants to call Arnprior home. That was the message delivered to Arnprior town council Monday by members of the organization. The municipal presentation was a follow-up to a community information meeting held at St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall June 27. “We want to carry on the process of community information,” explained Habitat board member Barry Burke, a former Arnprior resident who calls White Lake home. Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 in Americus, Georgia, started by Millard and Linda Fuller. The couple was concerned with the amount of people in their area living in ‘poverty housing’. Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter is very involved with the organization, focusing on a lot of international builds. “Our vision is to mobilize volunteers and community partners to build community housing,” Habitat CEO Donna Hicks told council. “Our value is housing for all.” Hicks was quick to emphasize the organization does not “give away” the houses it builds. Instead, the homes are sold to partnering families as an interest-free, long-term mortgage. In lieu of a down payment, the family donates 500 hours of unpaid labour to help build their home, or they volunteer in one of the two of the Ottawa ReStores or help in the community is some other way. EMC events – Despite a couple of days of rainy weather that has become synonymous with the event, the 158th Arnprior Fair Aug. 9-12 went off without a hitch. “We had two pretty good, wet days Thursday and Friday,” said Jeff Desarmia, president of the Arnprior Agricultural Society. “But there was no big increase or decrease in attendance from last year.” The rain and the success of the fair
bodes well for local farmers affected by recent drought conditions, as the fair board committed to handing over half the event’s proceeds to ease their strain. The final numbers are still being tallied, said Desarmia, but in a few weeks the organization will be ready to announce the funding and present the cheque. A big increase evident this year was in volunteer participation, said Desarmia. See VOLUNTEERS Page 2
