Many local farmers are not happy with delays in decision regarding drought relief, pointing to funding being received by the counterparts on the Quebec side. Perhaps the Quebec farmers have clout because they speak with one voice. – Pages 4, 10, 59

Classes to begin on time despite teacher dispute Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

EMC news – There won’t be a strike during the students’ first day of school, according to an area teachers’ union spokesman, but after that it depends on how far the Liberal government is willing to push it. Premier Dalton McGuinty said during a tour of an Ottawa school on Aug. 17 his minority government plans to introduce legislation that will require school boards and teacher unions to accept a salary freeze over the next two years and ban any strikes or lockouts. After eight years of relative stability compared to the tumultuous Mike Harris years, relations between the Liberal government and teachers has soured as Queen’s Park tries to get a handle on the provincial deficit. McGuinty has declared he will recall the Ontario legislature early on Monday, Aug. 27 to vote on a bill called Putting Students First. The bill would also force teachers to take a 1.5 per cent pay cut in the form of unpaid professional development days, eliminate banked sick days and offer 10 teaching days for short-term sick leave. He said the measures will save the deeply-indebted province $2 billion over the next two years. The one-time “education premier” added that if teachers don’t give up the money it could affect other areas of the education system.

EMC events – Dr. Kaboom, Magical Laurie, bed races, line dancers on John Street, classic cars, Highland dancers in the park and dragon boats. It’s all part of the fun in store for Arnprior residents and visitors this weekend as Arnprior’s summer festival takes over the downtown and Robert Simpson Park. It’s the third in a series of celebrations that started with the Arnprior 150 party and fol-

lowed up by the Arnprior Fair. The third annual White Pine Festival will also offer up a variety of amusements starting Friday evening and run through Sunday (Aug. 24-26). The event begins this Friday evening with the outdoor movie Grown Ups starring Adam Sandler down in Robert Simpson Park. While movie-goers wait for it to be dark enough for the movie to begin, there will be live entertainment and face-painting.

Future of Arnprior’s Terry Fox Run in doubt John Carter John.carter@metroland.com

EMC news – Help! Arnprior’s Terry Fox Run needs a new co-ordinator to survive. The town has had a Terry Fox run for all of the event’s 31 years. But last year’s might have been its last. Long-time co-ordinator Rita Cloutier, who has been the face of the local run for the past 31 years, is bowing out this year for health reasons.
