School back Tuesday despite teacher unrest John Carter John.carter@metroland.com
EMC news – Renfrew County students should expect a relatively normal return to school Tuesday, despite unrest among teachers upset over what they claim is the province “bullying” them with legislation to be passed this week. In a news release after its meeting Monday, the Renfrew County District School Board said it expects “business as usual” when classes start Sept. 4. Despite ongoing labour negotiations between the Ontario government and the province’s teachers, school board officials are planning for the start of classes at all 31 public school boards as scheduled. “From our perspective, we expect school will start on Sept. 4 as usual,” board chairman Dave Shields said Monday. Despite the legislation introduced at Queen’s Park Monday, the Renfrew County school board continues to negotiate with its teachers.

“We have started negotiations and we have more sessions booked for September and October with our local employee groups,” Shields said. “We only have the resources the government has made available and we have to work with the funding that has been provided.” School board officials are also monitoring the legislation, which is expected to be passed by week’s end, as the Conservatives have indicated they would support the minority Liberal government in voting for the Putting Students First Act that bans teacher strikes for two years. The NDP is opposing the legislation. Passing the act, which places a two-year pay freeze on teachers and ends sick time payouts on retirement, will prevent the automatic rollover of teacher contracts set to expire on Aug. 31. The new agreement would lead to salary increases of 5.5 per cent for many teachers, which is unacceptable considering the deficit problem the province is mired in, says the government.
CANADA’S LONGEST LASTING LINE OF PICK-UPS
“We are following closely the developments at Queen’s Park,” said Shields. The Renfrew County Catholic School Board is also optimistic its schools will return to normal operation and it will be successful in negotiating a local contract with its teachers. Unlike public board teachers in the province, the Catholic teachers have agreed in principle to a deal with the government. At its meeting Monday, the Catholic Board concentrated on highlighting major improvements to its schools over the summer. Included were St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Calabogie, which had two sections of its roof repaired as well as some exterior paint work completed; elevator refurbishment at St. James Catholic School in Eganville; and final preparations for the opening of the new St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School in Petawawa.
