EMC news – An O’Brien Theatre petition related to parking has collected more than 200 signatures and the number is climbing. For almost a month now, owner Kevin Marshall has kept a sign in his window and petition in his lobby asking traffic bylaw agents to stop handing out $20 tickets to his customers. He said many movies run past the two-hour allotment time; when folks leave the building they find a ticket under the windshield. During evening showings, O’Brien Theatre and sometimes Exciters night club are the only businesses open. There is plenty of room to park, meaning the essential role of ticketing – to open spots for other vehicles – could be deemed unnecessary. Marshall took his complaint to town hall, but was unimpressed with the solution offered. He was told to have his customers park in the municipal lot, at the back of Shoppers, and make movie-goers walk down a dark one-way alley with no sidewalk. “That was their response when I brought it to them, he said. “I’m so insulted by that. Often his summer matinee customers will buy tickets well in advance then shop the downtown core before the film starts. They, too, run the risk of a ticket despite doing what town councillors and most others want – to spend locally. Marshall said he agrees some enforcement is needed. Vehicles can’t be parked in prime spots along John and Elgin streets all day every day. But to ticket people who are spending money at his business is costing him and other business owners, he said. “People can just go to Kanata where there are parking lots, he said. Reeve Walter Stack wasn’t aware of the campaign to stop issuing parking tickets outside the historic theatre. But council is in the midst of updating all traffic-related bylaws and expects this specific issue to be corrected. “I think Kevin has a legitimate concern there, and I’m sure it’ll be addressed, Stack said. Stack said the town removed parking meters in an attempt to lure more shoppers downtown. To start ticketing them is counterproductive, according to Stack. See PARKING, Page 4

Summer holidays end with school’s return McNab Public School teacher Amy Charbonneau welcomes Grade 5 students Reese Mellema and Shawn Holiday back from the summer holidays just before classes begin Tuesday. Charbonneau joins Noreen Smith and Kayla Bews as new teachers at McNab. Students and teachers all across the province return to school this week, a sure sign the end of summer is less than three weeks away. The return to school prompted police to issue safety reminders. Arnprior Terry Fox Run saviour found John Carter John.carter@metroland.com

EMC news – The dream is alive. There will be a 32nd Arnprior Terry Fox Run this year. Long-time co-ordinator Rita Cloutier was delighted to disclose last Friday that a successor has come forward to ensure the run will be held Sept. 16. “We can’t let it die ‌ I knew we just had to keep Rita’s vision alive,â€? said local businessman Stephen Dodd, who has volunteered to organize the run this year. “Rita started it. We must maintain it. It wouldn’t do for Arnprior not to have a Terry Fox Run.â€? “I’m absolutely thrilled,â€? said Cloutier, the feisty cancer survivor who has organized the run every year since it was first held to honour cross-country runner Terry Fox a year after his death. Cloutier has been a cancer survivor for 37 years, longer than the run itself and is likely the longest-

serving Terry Fox Run co-ordinator in the province. After stepping forward last week after reading in the Chronicle Guide EMC that the run was in danger of folding because Cloutier was stepping down for health reasons, Dodd has been making up for lost time. “It’s unbelievable how much he has done considering the late start, said Cloutier. Fortunately, Dodd has plenty of contacts in town. The Investors Group agent, who grew up in Arnprior and is a graduate of Arnprior District High School, remembers taking part in Arnprior Terry Fox Runs when he was a student in the 1980s. As is the case with most people, Dodd’s family has been affected by cancer. So he is motivated to keep the run alive. It took three calls, but he finally was able to contact the Terry Fox Foundation and get accepted as a run facilitator. See RUN, Page 3
