Digital mammography machine keeps care closer to home Sherry Haaima sherry.haaima@metroland.com

EMC news - Arnprior Regional Health’s digital mammography machine is up and running following an impressive campaign that kicked off this spring. “We are really pleased to announce we actually exceeded our goal of $400,000,” said campaign chairwoman Kimberley O’Shaugnessy. The campaign, with a solid if inexperienced committee behind it, actually raised $425,000 when all was said and done. “Their tenacity and their dedication is why we exceeded our goal,” said O’Shaugnessy. She joined Partners in Caring chair Ted Kelly and CAO Eric Hanna in expressing gratitude to sponsors, businesses, service clubs, individuals and others who supported the campaign in a variety of ways. “There has been overwhelming support for this campaign from local businesses and members of the community,” said O’Shaugnessy. “From the 11year-old girl who had a garage sale to support the campaign from the service clubs who asked us to come into their meetings and explain the campaign and

also to the local businesses who know the importance of keeping care close to home.” The extra funds, she explained, were used for renovations and other updates required to house the new machine. Hospital officials, staff, foundation members and others gathered in the diagnostic imaging department on Thursday, Oct. 11 for a celebration and demonstration of the new $400,000 piece of equipment. Hanna praised O’Shaugnessy for her work on the campaign. “You’ve done a tremendous job in motivating everybody for us,” he said. Among those he thanked for their support was the hospital auxiliary, a group that gave $100,000 to the campaign. Mammography technologist Sharon Murphy said the machine is a very welcome addition to the department and means women don’t have to travel to Ottawa or Renfrew for testing. “You can read it so much easier,” said Murphy. “It looks so much better, it’s a lot more advanced. There’s also less radiation.” Murphy said she was often sending especially younger women with more dense breasts out of town for mammographies.

Scandals forced McGuinty to resign: opposition MPPs Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

EMC news – Dalton McGuinty’s revelation that he will step down as premier didn’t come as a surprise to two area opposition MPPs. But it is the prorogation of the legislature that has them most upset. Both Jack MacLaren and John Yakabuski figured the resignation was coming soon; largely, they say, because scandals such as eHealth, the Ontario Lottery, Presto cards, and Ornge were

growing insurmountable. And yet none was made to stick to whom many called The Teflon Premier. “They’ve never gotten nailed to the cross on these sorts of things,” said MacLaren, MPP for Carleton-Mississippi Mills. However, it is the latest controversy, involving the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), which MacLaren and the MPP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke say led to the prorogation. “That’s a travesty,” MacLaren said. “I call that a crime.” The OPA issue saw accusations

that the government interfered with contracts related to the creation of gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga. The Progressive Conservatives say it was done to save seats during the last election. Now taxpayers are on the hook to the tune of $650 million to cancel the contracts. Both opposition parties have tried to find out what role Energy Minister Chris Bentley played in the fiasco. They say by not providing information to the speaker of the house, contempt charges – with a maximum penalty of

a criminal conviction – could be levelled against Bentley. Some 36,000 heavily-redacted documents were provided; another 20,000 were handed over Oct. 12 after the Liberals spotted an apparent oversight. “This was an orchestrated attempt to deny the people information,” Yakabuski said. “The prorogation of the house is the real tragedy here. This is about telling the public the truth around these power plants.” See NO WORK Page 3
