We have plenty of news from Arnprior council this week, including its stance on the Arnprior-opoly game – Pages 2, 3, 4, 5, 15
EMC News – Shock and dismay have gripped Arnprior’s Catholic community after last week’s revelation that a long-time Saint John Chrysostom priest has been charged with sexually assaulting pre-teen boys. Daniel Miller is charged with three counts of gross indecency and three counts of indecent assault male. The OPP’s Renfrew County Crime Unit arrested and charged “Father Dan on Feb. 29 in Pembroke. The alleged offences occurred between 1970 and 1980. Miller, 67, was a priest in Arnprior from 1976 to 1996. However, OPP say none of the three complainants, including an adult male, are from Arnprior. That is a relief to the many who were baptized, went to school at St. Joseph and John XXIII schools, attended confession, were married and commemorated other significant moments under Miller’s guidance. SPRING AHEAD With spring just around the corner, Daylight Saving Time is set to return this weekend. Residents are reminded to move their clocks forward one full hour before they go to bed on Saturday, March 10. It is also a good time to check and replace batteries in home smoke alarms. – Page 3

Arnprior schools rank among best McNab-Braeside to take STAFF
EMC News - John XXIII has done it again. The Arnprior school scored a second perfect 10 in three years in the Fraser Institute’s Grade 3 and 6 province-wide rankings announced last week. John XXIII, which also scored 10 in the 2009 rankings, finished 12th in the entire province for its academic performance. Its highest ranking were for math marks for Grade 3 and Grade 6. The school has averaged 9.6 in the rankings in the past five years. Renfrew County’s second-ranked school for 2010-11 was St. Joseph’s Catholic School Arnprior. Its 9.5 rating scored 39th among the province’s 2,283 elementary schools. St. Joseph’s principal Mary Lise Rowat said the school is “very proud of John XXIII and its 10 out of 10, as well as being delighted with its own ranking, “down just a smidge from its first-place achievement last year. In Renfrew County, Our Lady of Fatima in Renfrew was next, at 44th overall, with a score of 9.4 for 2010-11. OLF had the same rating in 2009-10. Petawawa’s Our Lady of Sorrows was fourth in Renfrew County and St. Michael’s of Doug-
las fifth, with respective ratings of 8.5 and 7.9. Among the county’s public schools, T.W. Morison of Deep River was top ranked at 7.8, for 288th province-wide. Next were Rockwood Public School of Pembroke, Cobden Public School and McNab Public School with respective 2010-11 ratings of 7.1, 6.5 and 6.4. McNab’s mark was up over last year. The ratings for Walter Zadow of Arnprior and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School of Renfrew were both 5.6. A.J Charbonneau came in at 5.5. The Fraser Institute maintains its school rankings, based on 2010-11 province-wide test results, can assist parents in choosing a school. The ratings also encourage educators and parents seeking to improve Ontario schools, says the Institute. However, some educators reject the relevance of the rankings, saying the Conservative think-tank does not taken into account many factors that could skew the results. Visit www.ontario.compareschoolrankings. org for the report cards of every Ontario school and information on how the rankings are determined. The Fraser Institute ranks schools in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta.

McNab-Braeside council will give township residents at least a couple of chances to scrutinize the proposed agreements with Arnprior that could significantly increase their taxes. At its meeting Tuesday, council officially received reports from Arnprior with its proposals for what the township should pay for its residents using the town’s recreational programs and facilities and the Arnprior Public Library. Town council has crunched the numbers and has concluded that McNab-Braeside should be paying much more for using such Arnprior facilities as the Nick Smith Centre arena and pool. Predicting there will be a great deal of interest in the issue, McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell recommended council host a couple of public meetings, probably in April, to explain the proposed agreements. Council also agreed it would begin its deliberations on the Arnprior proposals at its first special township budget meeting Wednesday, April 4 at 9 a.m. in council chambers. That will ensure there will be full council participation, as Coun. Aldene Styles is away until later this month. See ‘ISSUE’ Page 2
