‘Revitalize the Grove’ Donor recognition project among ideas suggested at meeting SHERRY HAAIMA shaaima@msn.com New ideas for the Gillies Grove include recognizing those who helped save one of the last tracts of old growth forest in the province. A roomful of people gathered last Thursday at the Galilee Centre to share ideas about how to revitalize the Grove effort and form a committee to work toward that end. Mark Stabb, interim president of the Land Preservation Society of the Ottawa Valley (LPSOV), reminded those gathered about the remarkable efforts to save the forest. “We had all kinds of support,” said Stabb. “It was a big thing to have this grove

protected. It was really a community initiative,” he said. While the society has laid somewhat dormant over the past 10 years since the successful effort to save the Grove, a local group could be a valuable partner to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, which owns the land. The LPSOV has $50,000 in the bank and is interested in ideas about how to best use the money. “There are great opportunities for things that lie ahead,” said Stabb. “Right now, we have money and there are some outstanding things that need to be done.” He said what is needed now is strong community individuals to take things forward. McNab Public School hosted schools from the area last Wednesday at its annual invitational track meet. Above, Walter Zadow Public School student Bonnie McGonigal has a look of determination as she prepares to launch the shot put. For more photos from the track meet, please see Page 26.

In the wake of a collision that killed an 18-yearold Arnprior teenager May 20, police are reminding drivers not to over-react if their vehicle wanders off the paved roadway. Katrina ‘Kay’ Lyman was killed when her car hit a pickup truck on a curve on County Road 29 between Pakenham and Arnprior about 1 p.m. See DRIVER, Page 3
