A TANK FOR ARNPRIOR
Dangerous fires break out at school, Rhoddy’s Bay home JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com Difficult fires in the back end of the former Alexander Reid School and a Rhoddy’s Bay home on River Road provided unique challenges for Arnprior and McNab-Braeside firefighters Friday and early Saturday. The Alexander Reid fire, which broke out about 5:45 p.m. Friday, had to be vented before it was safe for firefighters to enter the building. Firefighters were praised by Arnprior Mayor Terry Gibeau Monday for how quickly and efficiently they tackled the intense fire. The Neighbourlink Fountain community centre in the front of the building was saved from
the fire, but because of smoke damage has closed down until at least mid-July. McNab-Braeside firefighters were called in to assist the Arnprior crew fight the blaze for four hours. No sooner had they returned home, they were called to a grass fire caused by sparking power lines on Russett Drive. A couple of hours later, at 2:33 a.m. Saturday, the tired firefighters were summoned to a house fire at 2011 River Rd., where they faced a seven-hour battle against a fire made more hazardous than usual by a large amount of exploding ammunition and thick bush nearby (see Page 6). The tank, which has had its diesel engine and the 50-calibre machine gun removed and the doors welded shut, was placed on its cement pad with the use of a crane. The Legion will host an official unveiling in August to coincide with its 80th anniversary.

Enforce noise bylaw, council urged JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com McNab-Braeside council has been asked again why it isn’t upholding its noise bylaw when it comes to operations at the Braeside Quarry. In response, council agreed to investigate the cost of a proper noise decibel meter system to give bylaw office Jim
McBain a method in which to measure noise after complaints. At council’s June 15 meeting, residents Sean Moore and Mark Popiel maintained the temporary asphalt plant in the quarry is running 24 hours a day in contravention of the township bylaw that forbids such operations overnight and on Sundays and holidays.
