A millionaire oilman who was Calgary-Centre MP after his illustrious football career ended has returned home, and now seeks a seat on Arnprior council. Jim Silye, a record holder with the Calgary Stampeders who made his fortune in oil and gas exploration, and won acclaim for the Reform party in the heart of conservative country, tossed his helmet in the race last Friday morning. It was one of a flurry of candidate filings in the last week, as incumbent Walter Stack and Coun. Tom Peckett entered the reeve’s race and Silye and Arnprior Airport manager Dan Lynch joined Doug Munro, Mark Willmer, Joe Zarb and Ted Strike in seeking one of the five councillor positions. The reeve’s race will be hotly contested with three sitting councillors (Stack, Peckett and Eric Burdon) already in the race. “I’m retired. I grew up here. I like it here. I want to be part of the decision-making process here,” Silye said enthusiastically about his candidacy. However, Silye said council
has become paralyzed by indecision, citing the gazebo controversy as an example. He wonders how council could defer a decision forcing someone to remove a structure that contravened town bylaw. It is that attitude that has allowed Carleton Place to leap ahead of Arnprior in both population and economic development, he said. “Let’s get with it,” said Silye, who has built 13 businesses from the ground up. “We need a more progressive approach to issues. The town is trying to shelter itself when we have lots to brag about.” Silye said the developers he has talked to have a valid point when they claim town hall moves too slowly on their requests. He advocates hiring at least one engineer to relieve pressure from public works director Janet Collins. The cost would be offset by savings on consultant fees. He would also have championed the proposal to build a retail power centre near Highway 417, saying any fears of Arnprior turning into another Kanata would only materialize over a 40-year span. Silye appointed to museum board Continued from front Silye served as a moderate and progressive Reform Party MP for Calgary-Centre from 1993 to 1997. He wasn’t comfortable with some of the party’s far right social aspects, and even voted with the majority of is urban constituents who supported the National Gun Registry. “Let the people speak. You fight battles for the people. It’s an honour and privilege to serve them,” said the 1971 Grey Cup winner. “The people I represented wanted it. I was even party whip at the time.” Silye, who has always vacationed during summers in his hometown of Arnprior, eventually left the party to vie for a seat under the provincial Progressive Conservatives, but lost the 1997 nomination. In 2000, he ran as the PC candidate in Calgary-West, losing that race to a Canadian Alliance candidate. He maintains close relations with some on Parliament Hill. In June, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Silye to the Canada Science and Technology Museum board of trustees. He will help oversee the construction of a new science and technology museum in Ottawa. “I like to be on winning teams. I think we have a winning team here,” Silye said of Arnprior’s natural beauty and history of promoting itself. “We are trying to look inward. I don’t want to see Arnprior wither on the vine. I like to go back to the future when Arnprior was the gateway to Renfrew County.” Asked why he didn’t simply run for mayor against Doug Smith, the lone de-
Jim Silye: back home in Arnprior clared candidate, Silye said he “would not run against” Mayor Terry Gibeau. (As of Tuesday morning, Gibeau had yet to announce publicly whether he would run again.) Silye said he has met Smith, but doesn’t know him well enough to pass judgment. He “reacquainted” with Gibeau within months of moving home in December. Asked if he would run for mayor in four-years time, Silye was evasive. “I don’t look that far ahead,” he said, laughing. “I could be dead in four years.”

ADMH Nurse Manager Jean Macnab demonstrates safe handwashing practices at one of the emergency room’s new sinks. Each exam room is outfitted with a sink designed specifically for optimum health safety.
“It’s been a very exciting project – the largest the hospital has undertaken in years,” said Hanna. Features of the new facility include improvements in privacy and infection control, he said. The entire project is expected to be finalized in March 2011. The new contemporary style and roomier space makes for a better working environment, said Hanna. Following guidelines recommended by the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale, the process for emergency patients has changed. Triage will take place upon arrival with registration to follow – a reverse of the previous order. This should allow for a better flow of patients and will also improve privacy. There is also a new isolation room that opens to the outside. This room would be put to use in the case of a chemical spill or incident of that nature. Hanna asked for continued patience from the public as phases two and three go ahead. With six of the eight hospital entrances under renovation, keeping things running smoothly is a challenge. Dr. Mark Robson is one of a number of ADMH physicians pleased with the new depart-

ment. The increased privacy is sure to be welcomed by patients, he said. “Before, the person beside you could pretty well hear what was going on,” said Robson. He is impressed with the new emergency department and said it also increases the attractiveness of Arnprior and ADMH for potential new physicians to come to the area. “It’s a nicer, brighter environment to work in for our staff,” said Robson. ENTRANCE OPTIONS For now, to access the hospital, people will have three choices. If they want to enter the hospital at the front, they can go through the Primary Health Care Centre until renovations are complete. ER officially open for business On Tuesday afternoon, after months of construction, the redeveloped emergency room at the Arnprior District Memorial Hospital opened for business and triaged the first pediatric patient. A brighter and bigger waiting section complete with a play area for children greeted patients and visitors. Patient and staff safety has been reflected in the design of the new ER with infection control at the forefront with automatic doors, deeper sinks. A portion of the waiting room is enclosed in glass to isolate patients suffering from cold- or flulike symptoms.

Town works on strategies to meet new growth opportunities The Town of Arnprior and the Arnprior Economic Development Committee are on the verge of launching two projects aimed at taking advantage of the infrastructure improvements in town. In a news release last week, economic development co-ordinator Erin Clarke announced a new revitalization and branding strategy and a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) will be launched in the near future. Clarke explained the initiatives are planned in conjunction with the four-lane highway and other infrastructure improvements taking place in Arnprior. A CIP will be developed to provide support and redevelopment opportunities to

Clarke said the information gathered from past surveys, provincial Proud members of the Canada JKA Karate Federation information, and general feedback will be compiled into a report to identify and INTRODUCTION TO prioritize projects that will revitalize the community. A substantial part of the process will include public consultation through focus groups and public meetings to ensure businesses and residents Monday & Wednesday have input into the strategy.

Seniors housing will have to wait JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
Despite protests from the town and Renfrew County, Arnprior won’t be getting expected funding for a subsidized seniors housing project this year. However, it will be given priority in the next round of funding, whenever that comes, Reeve Walter Stack told council July 26. “We got our Dear John letter regarding the housing,” he said. “But we’re still waiting to hear where
(this year’s) funds went.” After receiving verbal approval from the province regarding funding for 19 units, the town has found out the funds have been allocated elsewhere in the province. The project, proposed for the corner of John and McGonigal streets, was originally to have included 38 units, but the province cut it back to 19. “I’ll be watching this closely,” Stack promised council. “There’s a lot of interest in the project.”
In a related matter, Stack said he and Renfrew Reeve Audrey Green will bring a motion to Renfrew County council’s August meeting asking that municipalities lobby the province to designate some social housing complexes strictly for seniors. Provincial policy dictates social housing developments be open to all, but because of “real legitimate concerns” about safety and other issues, it is appropriate for some units to be for seniors only, he explained.

‘Guardian Angel’ provides scholarship, safety awareness for students
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has honoured Arnprior’s Sue Diotte with its 20010 Humanitarian Award. The award, presented in Toronto Tuesday, is granted to an individual or a group of individuals who do not hold ETFO membership but have given outstanding service to education and/or the community. Diotte was nominated for the award by Arnprior District Secondary School educational assistants, who call her an “all-round amazing woman.” When she lost her 16-year-old daughter Sarah in a tragic car accident in 2001, she set up a scholarship fund in Sarah’s memory. Called the ‘Yellow Butterfly Fund’, it is given to a student who has a passion for writing and pursuing writing in their post-secondary studies. The graduate must also show compassion, determination and have the desire for personal growth. As a member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Diotte participates in all the pre-prom assemblies at ADHS to raise awareness about drinking and driving. She’s also on the Safe Schools Committee and gives class presentations to raise awareness about different kinds of bullying. Diotte runs a Leisure Lounge at the school,
Alarm warnings issued JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
The Arnprior fire department has issued several warnings to home-owners, but no fines as yet in town for smoke-alarm non-compliance. However, the fire department does take the issue of working smoke alarms extremely seriously, emphasized fire chief John Okum, noting the fire marshal’s office promotes a no-tolerance policy. A building-owner was charged and fined $10,000 last year for failing to maintain a working smoke alarm, he noted. The McNab-Braeside Fire Department announced last week that it had issued its first $235 fine under the Fire Code to a homeowner for failing to maintain working smoke alarms after a house fire in Burnstown. Okum said home-owners are required to ensure they have working fire alarms properly placed and maintained on every floor of their buildings. Despite the publicity and close calls that have proved the life-saving ability of smoke alarms (including another one in Ottawa Monday), there is still a percentage of people who purposely disable the alarms because they feel they are a nuisance, he said. “That is a real concern for the fire department.” Most people are getting the message that fire alarms save lives, but like drinking and driving, there will always be those who ignore the law and need a warning or fine to bring them into compliance, Okum added.
Heritage status supported Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack says RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant shouldn’t shy away from endorsing an effort to give the Ottawa River heritage status just because Quebec isn’t part of the initiative. “I think that’s irrelevant,” he told Arnprior council. “That shouldn’t effect what we’re doing on the Ontario side.” He reported Renfrew County council is trying to pressure Gallant to get onside by informing the Prime Minister of local desire to have her support the application, which was once thought a foregone conclusion.
which is a place where students with Autism Spectrum can go and relax, socialize and play a variety of games. She is very involved with the school’s Gay Straight Alliance that supports the inclusion and awareness of sexuality in the school environment. At a moment’s notice, Diotte is also prepared to come into the school if there is a student who needs counselling or someone to talk to about the grief they could be struggling with.
“The amount of caring and responsibility that Sue has taken on for her community of students in Arnprior is inspiring,” said ETFO president Sam Hammond. “She is truly a guardian angel whom we’re proud to recognize with this award.” The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario represents 76,000 elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.

Hazelwood running for school board JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
Citing the desire to see several school projects through to completion, Norm Hazelwood is running to retain his seat on the Renfrew County District School Board. Hazelwood, who represents McNabBraeside and Arnprior on the board, has served on the board for two and a half terms and before that was on McNab council for 15 years. “I still enjoy it and there are a few more things I’d like to do,” he says. With a background in construction supervision and seven years as chairman of the property committee, Hazel-
wood is the board’s resident expert on the building and modifying of schools in Petawawa and Deep River. A lack of provincial funding has forced the board to cut back the size of the proposed 1,000-student Petawawa school. As the project will go out to tender next spring instead of this fall, Hazelwood would like to still be on the board when it’s built. “I think when it comes to property issues, there will be a lot of challenges facing the board,” he said. He is also the board’s transportation committee chairman and is pleased the school district’s busing deficit has been chopped from half a million dollars to less than $70,000 this year. In
two years, he sees the transportation deficit eliminated thanks to staggered bells changes and working closely with the Renfrew County Catholic board. If the boards, as expected this month, support a recommendation to incorporate the transportation system it will be another positive move toward getting rid of the deficit, he said. Hazelwood is also interested in seeing through several other initiatives he has been involved in, including the arrival of all-day kindergarten at McNab and other schools this fall, increasing the number of smart boards in local schools, and continuing to foster strong communication between the board and the schools in his area.

Bray seeks another term on Catholic school board JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
Serving 26 years on the Renfrew County District Catholic School Board, including seven terms as chairman, has not dimmed Andy Bray’s enthusiasm for the role. “I’m enjoying it and think it’s worthwhile work,” said Bray, who filed to again run to represent Arnprior, McNab-Braeside and Greater Madawaska on the board. “I think I’ve still got something to offer.
I like the people I’m working with and I like representing the people,” he said. Bray, who lives in Braeside, said he is particularly proud of encouraging the forming of school councils before it became mandatory. “We saw that it was coming, so we took the initiative and went ahead,” he said, adding it is gratifying to see parental involvement in the schools. He chaired the committee established in the early 1990s to set up school councils and continues to play an active role in

the committee that ensures board and parent council communication remains strong. He said he feels a good trustee should be involved in all issues coming before the board. In that vein, he prefers to chair ad-hoc committees, leaving newer trustees to gain experience chairing the board’s major committees. He’s proud of the successes of local schools, particularly in literacy improvements. Schools such as John XXIII and St. Joseph’s are “doing great things,” he said. LETTER
A choice for voters
Thanks for attending Sunday concerts in park
I
It’s about time. The municipal election in Arnprior has suddenly become intriguing with the entry in the last week of several high profile candidates. The mayor’s race could well be upstaged by the reeve’s contest, which will feature three incumbent council members. Sitting reeve Walter Stack filed Wednesday, joining councillors Eric Burton and Tom Peckett in the bid to be Arnprior’s representative on Renfrew County Council. That has the making of a great three-way race, as all have their own following in town. It also means there will be at least two newcomers on council. There is no shortage of candidates with six already filed for the five positions with two incumbents (Nancy Black and Jack Lammert) yet to announce their intentions. Arnprior voters are fortunate they will have a strong candidate pool from which to choose. The candidates already in the race include an experienced incumbent (Mark Wilmer), two former council members (Ted Strike and Doug Munro), a former MP (Jim Silye), an enthusiastic community activist (airport manager Dan Lynch) and a man well-known in local sports circles (Joe Zarb). With those names on the ballot, Arnpriorites have no excuse not to vote (after they have thoroughly scrutinized the candidates’ platforms, of course). Summer holidays are almost over. Let the campaigning begin.
Sidewalk, road work needed To the editor: Anyone doing extensive walking on the sidewalks will have noted some serious deterioration over recent time. Sidewalk construction and replacement appears to be at a standstill other than the streets installed during the rebuilding of underground services. Sidewalks in the downtown area and in many other parts of town are in serious need of attention. Sidewalks are also needed in areas where they do not exist presently. A prime example of this lack would be Charles and Arthur streets. If you have driven on roads in Amprior recently, you will have noticed how rough they are. See MORE ARNPRIOR, Page 10

LETTER
Losing the railroad a big mistake
To the editor:
I should start by saying I don’t send letters to the editor. I read them. I complain. My wife patiently listens, and life goes on. But this time I’ve decided to speak my mind. It seems people I talk to have similar opinions, although I doubt we agree entirely on things. That’s just human nature. We once had a railroad. We no longer do. Or maybe you haven’t noticed. Yes, the steel rails remain and the crossings still make it look like we have a railroad. But it’s gone. It’s dead. And it’s not coming back. I’ve talked with the three levels of government involved. It’s interesting what you get from them. “I don’t want to see the end of the railroad in Arnprior.” “It’s the provincial government that hasn’t signed the agreement that would provide funds.” “We are hoping someone will buy the rail line and operate it.” “We are having meetings.” And so on and so on. I wasn’t really surprised by their ‘pass the buck’ attitude. CP wants to get rid of it. Time has almost run out. And there is no foresight being used. But then that’s a government trait.

Not that you or I are ever going to change that. Let’s look around for a moment. The highway is being upgraded to four lanes. We need that. In fact, by the time the highway is upgraded to four lanes on up the valley, we’ll need six lanes. Maybe you haven’t noticed, but there’s lots of traffic. And there is going to be lots more. Arnprior is growing. More houses mean more people, mean more trucks to supply more people, mean more jobs which bring more people. You get the idea. We’re growing. Not bad in the current economic times. Truth is, we can’t build the highways fast enough to manage all the traffic people create. Anyone ever hear of the railroad that used to run through our town? Anyone ever look up what that railroad was used for? Anyone ever ship anything by train? Anyone ever ride the train? What an old fashion way to do things. Or is it? If you’ve traveled to other parts of the world that have become densely populated, you’ll see they can’t get along without their railroads. They probably didn’t have foresight either, but they had an ever growing demand for transportation, the likes of which
we won’t see for a few years. By then we’ll have a new recreation trail. That’ll be helpful when the roads are full of traffic. Bumper to bumper no matter which direction we go. Foresight isn’t a new word in the dictionary. It is a new concept for government though. Thank goodness we have a fantastic hospital in Arnprior, so that when the steel rails are actually removed and the realization sinks in that we’ve shot ourselves in the foot, we can get help. A. Kirk Arnprior

Two Arnprior OPP constables had good reason to think they had the right vehicle when they stopped a Jeep suspected of driving through corn fields off White Lake Road. It was dragging cornstalks. On July 18, Constables Stevens and Mark Young were on the lookout for a black Jeep that had been reported to police by a motorist who was following the vehicle. The Jeep, which had been travelling through the corn fields off White Lake Road, was suspected to be driven by impaired drivers who had been reported taking turns behind the wheel. WRONG SIDE OF ROAD The officers spotted the vehicle on Van Dusen Road with cornstalks protruding from under its carriage. They stopped the vehicle, which was on the wrong side of the road. Both occupants were arrested and taken for breath tests. Charged are 33-year-old and 31-year-old men, both of Arnprior. On July 23, Const. Rothwell conducted an investigation in Arnprior that resulted in the driver of a vehicle being arrested and taken in for breath tests. A 58-year-old Arnprior man has been charged with impaired driving and exceeding .08 mg. DRUG CHARGES Arnprior OPP have laid a large number of drug-related charges this summer. Constables Emon and Pasta were conducting a traffic investigation in the parking lot of an Arnprior business recently when they seized of a quantity of marijuana. A 19-year- old male has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Schedule II substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. On Aug 6, while Sgt. Neufeld was conducting a traffic investigation, he observed a quantity of marijuana in the vehicle. As a result of his investigation, a 24-year-old Renfrew man has been charged with Possession of a Schedule II substance. On July 5, Const. Cameron was conducting a traffic investigation that included the seizure of a quantity of marijuana. A young male has been charged with Possession of a Schedule II substance for the Purpose of Trafficking. On July 3, Const. Dunfield was conducting a traffic investigation that resulted in the seizure of a quantity of cocaine and marijuana. A young male has been charged with Possession of Cocaine and marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. Meanwhile, Sgt. Paul Dowdall is investigating a break and enter at Clancy’s Drug June 27.
Suspects broke into the drugstore and stole various prescrip-
tion medications. Anyone with information re-
garding this occurrence is asked to contact the Arnprior OPP at

The Arnprior Agricultural Society is thrilled with the success of its 156th fair. “It was a huge, huge success this year,” says society director Lynn Grinstead of the Aug. 5 to 8 event. “All of our extra additions really made it a well-rounded event.” Well over 5,000 people came through the gates for the 156th event, says Grinstead. The exact number is hard to pinpoint because attendance wasn’t taken during special free admission times. There was about a 25 per cent increase in the numbers, so organizers are quite pleased. Weather was a big factor, too, and Mother Nature co-operated, with showers early Thursday clearing up in time for the evening and some rain Sunday afternoon as events were wrapping up. “It was just perfect, we couldn’t have asked for better,” says Grinstead. Headliners April Wine drew a good crowd and put on a great show, she says. Kids’ games, including Lunchbox Deal or No Deal and an Amazing Race event, were very popular, reports Grinstead. The Sunday bingo added to the schedule was also a big hit. Free events like the kids’ games, magic show and Bowmanville Zoo show helped make the fair an affordable event for families, says Grinstead. She said the “overwhelming financial support”

One of the Arnprior Fair’s most dedicated volunteers is Alma Majaury of Waba. Majaury, seen looking over the White Lake Women’s Institute exhibit at the fair, was helping judges keep the exhibitor prize list. She has been a member of the White Lake WI for more than 50 years and is a long-time exhibitor and volunteer at the fair. The Arnprior Fair traditionally has one of the Valley’s most extensive WI exhibits. Six WIs were represented this year - White John O’Neill Sales Representative Lake, Balsam Hill-Horton, Lorne Sutherland (West Carleton), Burnstown, Lochwinnoch and Glasgow. BUS: 613-270-8200
from business sponsors was a big boost for the fair this year. “We were very fortunate to have that,” she said. It allowed fair organizers to bring in extra attractions such as Edge Motorsports show and the Bowmanville Zoo, she said. With this year’s success under their belts, society members will work to grow and improve the event each year. “We know we’re on the right track,” says Grinstead.

Ag. Society to follow demolition derby with fall brawl
Fair-goers donate truckloads to food bank
The Arnprior Agricultural Society will capitalize on the Valley’s love for demolition derbies with an Oct. 2 fall brawl fundraising event at the fairgrounds. There will be plenty of prize money up for grabs, says society director Lynn Grinstead. This year’s fair derby was once again a great success. Winners included: • 4-cylinder class - Andrew Normandeau • 6-cylinder class - Doug Bill • 8-cylinder class - Jeff Woito •Grudge match winner - Jeff Woito • Best paint - Donny Gauvereau • Sand Bagger award - Josh Rancourt.
The Arnprior Agricultural Society was pleased to keep up its tradition of community support with a donation to the Arnprior Food Bank. Thursday gate fees were reduced when fair-goers made a donation to the food bank. “It’s our way of giving back to the community,” said society director Lynn Grinstead.

LETTER

To the editor: I want to thank all of the residents and business leaders who came to help me launch my campaign for Reeve at Robert Simpson Park. It was a wonderful afternoon, and I enjoyed having the opportunity to discuss the tough issues facing our community. A special thanks to singersongwriter Craig Cardiff for his performance, and to my wife, children, parents and family for their love and support. In my discussions at the launch, and at the doorsteps over the past two weeks, it has become clear to me attraction of industry has to be at the top of the priority list, because it leads the way to addressing many of the key issues facing residents: • Industry brings good jobs that put money into the pockets of residents;
• Industry balances the tax and water base to reduce the burden on residents; • Industry stimulates the economy and attracts commercial development. When people tell me what they hope Arnprior will look like in the future, they describe a community that is vibrant and prosperous. Long-term prosperity comes from bringing money into the community through good-paying jobs that not only stimulate the economy, but sustain it. Here in Arnprior, we have succeeded in transitioning our economy once before. Back in the ’50s we were a logging community that needed to find new solutions to challenging economic times. Through the innovation, initiative and dedication of our community leaders, we identified booming industries and sought out the in-
More Arnprior road, sidewalk work needed Continued from page 8 The town has in excess of 50 km of roads in the system, which must be maintained. The traffic master plan, which was prepared in 2009, addresses the needs for the anticipated growth out to 2025 but did not address the maintenance needs for the balance of the system. We must develop a short- and long-term plan for this road system maintenance. If this isn’t done, these roads will fall into disrepair to a point where they will require a total rebuild. More funding is required to achieve sustainability in the system. Approximately 12 years ago, I prepared a 40-year life cycle cost analysis for rebuilding the roads. At that time the necessary funding was far too unaffordable on an annual basis for the 40-year period. The alternative to this option would be to resurface the roads to prevent water from entering the road base, thus giving an additional life of 10 to 15 years to have
Concerts showcase our local talent Continued from page 8 The performers – including Carvalho, Gary Patrois, Shady Blue, Dennis Harrington and Friends, and Catalyst – were enthusiastic about playing in the park and provided exceptional entertainment. The series showcased the wealth of talent that we are blessed with. Again, a very special thank you to our sponsors, performers and the attendees of the concerts. We were thrilled to be able to expand the concert series this year and hope for your continuing support in the future. Seeing the community come together for events like this, reminds us how blessed we are to live in a town like Arnprior.
a reasonable driving surface. Some resurfacing efforts were made last year and this year, but more is required. It is obvious that annual funding for a total rebuild of town roads is not possible because of the cost involved. Therefore, a long-range plan is necessary to justify an annual budget request to fund a resurfacing program. The Town has a program for rebuilding roads after underground services are replaced. That program is presently on hold due to the upgrading costs of both the water filtration plant and the sewage treatment facility. The road rebuilding program cannot move quickly enough to achieve sustainability. We cannot wait for that program or many of the roads will deteriorate beyond where resurfacing is practical. Something must be done now. Ted Strike Arnprior
dustry leaders in order to bring them to Arnprior. Today, we must walk in the footsteps of our elders in pursuit of prosperity for the next 50 years. This week I am attending a conference where I will be meeting with industry leaders, provincial ministers, and other municipal officials to learn what other communities are doing to propel their economies forward. I look forward to bringing back concrete recommendations. It’s great to get politics out to the farm: Ignatieff steve.newman@metroland.com
Six provinces in, with four more provinces and three territories to go. It’s going to be a long haul, with an anticipated 40,000 kilometres in bus travel across Canada for the Liberal Express summer tour. But the tour that offers a fresh opportunity for the Liberal Party, according to federal leader Michael Ignatieff. The travels took the leader and the Liberal Express through Renfrew County Aug. 9, where he ended with day with a corn roast at the family farm of local federal Liberal candidate Christine Tabbert. He also took time for one-on-
one interviews with local newspapers, including the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. “I just think it’s great to get politics out of Ottawa and out of the bubble, out to the farm, out to the wharf ….” said Ignatieff. Whether it’s seaside or farmside, Ignatieff says Canadians are responding positively to the Liberal Express. And they’re not just Liberal Party supporters, says the party leader. “A lot of people have come to kick the tires.” In politics, coming to a region to seek or strengthen support also requires knowledge of local issues. In a brief telephone interview, Ignatieff had quick responses to various local issues, in particular heritage designa-
tion for the Ottawa River, the extension of Highway 417 from Arnprior through to Pembroke and beyond, and the future of the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited operation. The highway’s extension through Renfrew County, said Ignatieff, “has been a concern for some time. We want to improve infrastructure in rural and most parts of Canada.” In Renfrew County, local Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant says giving the Ottawa River heritage status without involving Quebec (which has expressed disinterest) would send the “wrong message to our neighbours.” Meanwhile, Renfrew County councillors and others continue to push for heritage status as
MP attacks Liberal leader after his visit to riding Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant responded to the visit of Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff to the riding by claiming he is on a “farewell tour” and “is out of touch with real Canadians.” “The next time he comes ‘just visiting’ to a rural riding he should take the time to learn the issues,” she said in a news release. Gallant said her military constituents are “outraged” Ignatieff “used the backdrop of CFB Petawawa to announce cuts
part of a project begun by past local Liberal MP Len Hopkins, who died a few years ago. Anywhere where iconic explorer Samuel de Champlain has paddled, such as the Ottawa River, is important to identify as part of Canada’s development, says Ignatieff. “I think anything that embraces Canadian heritage, anything that helps Canadians understand our country better and protects the heritage of our country is a good thing. “Whether the designation is the right thing, I don’t know.” Meanwhile, Ignatieff said he hopes Canadians continue to hear, during this Liberal Express, about the Liberal option to the Conservative govern-

to our Forces should his coalition ever come to power.” She said Ignatieff would return Canada to the “disastrous Liberal policy of not providing proper equipment for our women and men in uniform.” That policy in the 1990 was neglectful and “cost the lives of our soldiers,” she charged. Gallant suggested Ignatieff has been travelling around “in an effort to learn more about the country he left for 32 years.” He only returned to Canada “after the promise of easy power,” she added.

The very fact his interview was interrupted (and then continued) after the cell phone connection was lost, was evidence that technological infrastructure for rural Canada needs to be improved with the help of the federal government, said Ignatieff. He said the Liberals have committed to spending $500 million to enhance broadband communication in Canada. Dairy Queen raises close to $3,000 for CHEO JOHN CARTER
john.carter@metroland.com
Arnprior Dairy Queen sold 872 blizzards last Thursday on Miracle Treat Day, raising almost $3,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
Arnprior DQ manager Jane Ferrari said the final tally with proceeds from the blizzards and donations was $2,975. She said Sandvik came up with an innovative way of supporting the campaign, ordering 190 gift certificates for mini-blizzards, for their staff.
A number of customers came in to order multiple blizzards for their employees or families, she noted. Ferrari said it was an enjoyable day, with seven staff members bringing in their parents to help with the campaign.

If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. For further information or a product refund call P&G toll-free at 877-340-8823 (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST). PUPPIES DIE AFTER FLIGHT Seven puppies died after flying in a cargo hold from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Chicago. According to American Airlines, warm-blooded animals are not permitted to fly on any flight where temperatures exceed 85 degrees. National
Weather Service Tulsa weather that morning was already at 86 degrees and climbing. According to baggage handlers at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, the puppies looked lethargic. Employees tried cooling down the puppies. Unfortunately five died immediately and two died later at the veterinarian’s office. Personally I would never place any pet in the cargo hold of an
airplane. If the pet cannot fly with me, than it will not fly. The poor puppies must have died a horrible and painful death.

Charity golf tournament teeing off for final time JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
A golf tournament that has raised more that $80,000 for charity is wrapping up with one last tee-off Saturday, Sept. 11. The 4-Putters tournament, first organized by four Fitzroy golfing buddies in 1985, has been held on the second Saturday in September at the Madawaska Golf Club ever since. With only two of the four originators still available to organize the event, they have decided the 25th annual event will be the last. Wayne Harris and Bert Reitsma are urging all those who have participated in the tournament over the years to come out one last time for a day of golfing fun and to support two good causes. The pair hope to have Murray Bowes, who is ailing with kidney problems, back for the last tournament. However, the fourth Putter, Jim Dolan, died of cancer a couple of years ago. Harris said the four friends used to head to the Madawaska Golf Course every Sunday at 7:30 a.m. during the season. One Sunday in 1985 they decided they should hold a charity event and the 4-Putters tournament was born. The Children’s Hospital of
Eastern Ontario has always been the tournament’s main charity, but each year the four also pick a secondary cause to support. Other beneficiaries of the tournament have included Arnprior District Memorial Hospital (twice), the Arnprior and West Carleton cancer societies, and St John Ambulance. This year a donation will go to the Fitzroy Community Association, an organization that has been asked to take over the tournament. Harris said the tournament’s first year was rather traumatic for the four because it poured rain. “Here we were with no rain date and the rain pouring down,” he said. However, all but five of the 254 golfers showed up with raincoats, umbrellas and galoshes to brave the rain, he said. “It shows there was a lot of community support (for the causes),” he added. “We really lucked out.” For most years since, the weather has been much kinder to the organizers. Harris said many people deserve to be thanked for making the tournament such a success, including all those who played in it. He issued as special thank you to Madawaska Golf Club owner Rick Munro and his staff “for all the hospitality over the

Arnprior golfer captures Renfrew title STEVE NEWMAN Special to the C-G Most players were talking about how the weather threatened to highjack the second round of the Renfrew Golf Championships Sunday. But when it came down to it, the on-again, offagain rain, high winds and high humidity challenged the players to gain control of their games. Several did, including Stephen Dowd of Arnprior and Cindy Lacroix of Ottawa with their first-ever men’s and women’s titles at the Renfrew Golf Club. Rob Warren was seeking his 11th Renfrew Golf Club men’s championship, but the 16th hole was his undoing. He hit his second shot, a four-wood from 200 yards on the par-four, into the hazard and emerged with a double-bogey six. However, the 10-time club champion regained the lead with a birdie on 13. Then came the two-shot swing in Dowd’s favour on the 16th. Dowd avoided
Stephen Dowd with his championship plaque. a tie for first by chipping from the edge of the 16th green and sinking a fourfoot putt. It appeared Dowd might be caught when he left his tee-shot below the green on the par-three 17th, but he salvaged a par with a delicate downhill 12-footer.
Warren just missed a makeable birdie to remain one stroke back. Both men birdied the downhill parfive 18th that was playing only 440 yards to leave Dowd with his first-ever Renfrew Golf Club title, but hardly his first men’s title. Dowd, who turned 54 Sunday, has also won titles with clubs in Hamilton, Peterborough, Dartmouth, and Beloeil, Que. After finishing second three times in the men’s championship, Dowd said, “We didn’t even know if we were going to play today (Sunday), so that was a little nerve-wracking.” In the end, Dowd said putting was key. “I made a lot of clutch, par putts.” He also won against a regular playing partner.. “Rob is a tremendous competitor,” said the new champion. “He (Warren) never gives up. You have to fight him to the end. By day’s end, Dowd was the winner with a threeover score of 74-71−145. Warren came in at 146.
Delahunt and Joe Larkin, also of Fitzroy, as main organizers. They only missed holding the tournament once, the year Dolan died. Harris said the emphasis, as always, will be on enjoying the game and the course, as participants don’t have to be expert golfers. “We have a heckva lot of
fun,” he said. The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. As in the past, the golf will be followed by a banquet and awards at the Fitzroy Community Centre about 6:30 p.m. Anyone interested in playing should call Harris at 613-623-3205 or Reitsma at 613-623-2680.

NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING gets read. gets remembered. gets results
With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

Nature provides us with every means of stimulation. Our eyes are treated to a smorgasbord of colour. Our noses are sent the most savoury of scents. Our souls are massaged by Her tranquillity. Nature also immerses us in sound. The vocalizations of birds, especially when expressed in spring dawn choruses, are galleries of music. Mid-summer evenings are alive with frogs and coyotes celebrating the arrival of night. The voices of birds and frogs are certainly deserving of our accolades. However, the music of late summer is produced by a very different group of animals, one that seldom gets much notice. This is unfortunate for these singers are equally im-
Michael Runtz Nature’s Way portant members of our audible world, with their voices giving late summer a distinctive feel or “hear.” I am referring to the concerts of insects so prevalent right now.
Actually, crickets, grasshoppers, and cicadas should be more appropriately addressed as “musicians” for their music is not of a vocal nature. These insects produce sound by manipulating specific body parts. Cicadas may be better known to you as “heat bugs,” a name that reflects how their musical productivity rises with the temperature. These prehistoriclooking bugs are seldom seen but often heard, their loud songs issuing from the crowns of tall trees. The piercing, metallic buzz is produced when muscles pluck a pair of small plates or “tymbals” located on the sides of the first abdominal segment. The ensuing sound is produced in a way similar to depressed drink lid
producing a “click” as it springs back to shape. There are several species of cicadas in our region; the dog-day Cicada is the one most commonly heard. In late summer a veritable symphony erupts when male grasshoppers, katydids, and crickets begin advertising for mates. While the chirps of fall field crickets may be familiar to you, the lispy ticks of meadow katydids and the high-pitched trills of tree crickets have likely been overlooked. Unlike cicadas, these insects produce sound by stridulation (rubbing body parts together). Crickets stridulate by rubbing a scraper, the hardened edge of one forewing, against a file-like ridge on the base of the other. Some grasshoppers rub a file on
one hind leg against a scraper on a forewing’s base. In any case, the resulting sound is species specific. The Songs of Insects by Elliot and Hershberger is an excellent book/CD that allows you to identify most of the singers in our region. A word of caution, however. After the age of 50, one’s ear loses the higher frequencies. Sadly, it may be too late for some of us to fully appreciate the concerts of late summer. If you would like to hear another concert, I am leading a Wolf Howl for Bonnechere Park on August 21. See http://www. bonnecherepark.on.ca/for details. The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

The Caitlin Stewart Memorial Highland Dancing Competition will draw more than 90 dancers to Arnprior this Sunday, Aug. 22. The Arnprior Highland Dancing Association is presenting the 10th annual Caitlin Stewart Memorial Highland Dancing Competition at Robert Simpson Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 90 dancers are expected to participate, coming from as far as the Toronto, Sudbury and Quebec areas. “It’s the best location in the Ottawa Valley,” says organizer Renee Stewart, of scenic Robert Simpson Park, where a stage will be set up next to the band stand. “It certainly has the best Ottawa River view.” The competition is held each year in memory of Stewart’s daughter, Caitlin, who passed away after a car accident Nov. 2, 1998. “Everyone is invited down to the park for a wonderful day of dancing and listening to bag pipes,” said Renee Stewart “The dancers enjoy an enthusiastic crowd to bring out the best performance from the dancers. “Bring a lawn chair and sunscreen. Admission is free, but a donation to Caitlin’s scholarship would be appreciated,” she added.

An annual Highland dancing competition in Arnprior is held in the memory of Caitlin Stewart, who died in a traffic accident on Highway 17 just outside Arnprior in 1998. Caitlin was an avid Highland dancer. Stewart noted there will be an onsite canteen, complete with hamburgers
from M & M Meats. She encourages members of the public to drop in and check out the dancing and the music. The dancers will be colourfully dressed in kilts and national costumes, she explains, and the dancers will be accompanied by accomplished bagpipers. Each competitor will do four dances and at the end of the day the premier dancers will perform their own version of the Cake Walk. “This is so exciting to watch pairs of dancers (with) their own interpretation of the dance,” said Stewart. “The lassies have lots of fun and the crowd likes to start clapping with the dancers.” The competition could not be held without the community sponsorship, including backing from Ontario Hydro, which is a long-time supporter. Stewart expressed heartfelt thanks for all the competition’s community supporters. “We also have a wonderful group of volunteers,” she said. “These volunteers ensure the competition continues to run successfully every year. “Come one and all and sit back to enjoy a wonderful day with the dancers.”

One of Arnprior’s best-known young singers will take to the stage Sunday, Aug. 29 for another in a series of her popular concerts. Molly Luhta will present A Classical Voice at 3 p.m. at Grace St. Andrew’s United Church. She will perform works by Bizet, Strauss, Puccini and others. The Arnprior-raised soprano is back home after working the summer with the Michigan Opera Theatre and is excited about giving another concert in her home town. A fourth-year music student
at Queen’s University, Luhta is studying with Carol-Lynn Reifel, majoring in voice performance. She is also finishing a double major in performance and education with a minor in drama. Luhta was the 2010 winner of the prestigious Queen’s Concerto/Aria Competition. She is also the recent winner of the Kingston Kiwanis Senior Voice Competitive scholarship. She was recently the featured guest soloist with the Arnprior Community Choir and will be performing with the Kingston Symphony Orchestra in December.
Luhta has been a member of the Queen’s Student Opera Company for the past three years performing in productions of I Pagliacci, Dido and Aeneas and most recently in the lead role of Hansel in Humperdink’s Hansel and Gretel. Over the years, she has received more than 60 awards and trophies from various festivals from Pembroke and Renfrew to Ottawa and Kingston. She has received several scholarships during her studies at Queen’s and has remained on the Dean’s List for the past three years.
Luhta teaches private voice and piano lessons and is pleased to be working with the renowned McGuirk Music Studio for another year. She anticipates studying in Europe next year and proceeds from the concert will go toward helping her further her studies and career, likely on the opera stage. Tickets for the Aug. 29 concert cost $10 and are available in advance at the Arnprior Book Shop and Main St. Music, as well as at the door. Light refreshments will be served.

Twenty-year prison sentences decried by Bahai’s Members of the Baha’i Faith in Arnprior and area were saddened to learn of the 20-year prison sentence given to seven “innocent members of their faith” by a court in Iran recently. However, they took some comfort in the fact high-ranking officials from many countries and international bodies, including Canada, U.S., Netherlands and European Union have officially expressed their deep concern and even condemnation of the prison sentences. In Canada, an Aug. 10 press release from the office of Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon states in part: “Canada is deeply disturbed by reports that these individuals have now been sentenced to 20-year prison terms on charges of espionage, acting against national security and being enemies of God, and that these sentences were passed without either written judgements or due process.” In a statement dated Aug. 12, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S., “strongly condemns” the sentencing of seven Iranian Baha’i leaders to 20 years imprisonment and is “deeply concerned with the Iranian government’s continued persecution of Baha’is and other religious minority communities in Iran.” Concern was also expressed
locally. “It is difficult to imagine the fear and injustice that some people around the world continue to live
in today,” said Heather Raudssus of Arnprior. “My prayers go out to victims of oppression everywhere.”

“It’s horrific. When religion becomes dogma, it becomes a tool for those who seek and hold power,” said Sue
Hobbs of Arnprior. “I thank God that I live in Canada, a country in which I cannot be imprisoned or per-
secuted for living my Baha’i Faith.” “I was astounded when I heard about the treatment that the
government of Iran is dealing out to these perfectly innocent people,” said Billie A. Hobbs of Arnprior.
