MAYOR DECLARES Mary Campbell has announced she will seek another term as mayor of McNab-Braeside and Terry Gibeau is expected to do the same shortly in Arnprior. With just over two weeks to go before the nomination deadline, McNab-Braeside has its first three municipal council candidates, including Campbell who will seek a second term as mayor. Also filing papers in the last week for one of three council positions are incumbent councillor Brad McIlquham and former councillor Aldene Styles. In Arnprior the list of candidates has swelled to 11 with Lynn Grinstead the seventh to join the race for five councillor spots. 5, 6, 14
After a flood of calls and visits to town hall from residents last week, Arnprior council moved quickly Monday to plug the problem of dubious water bills. By noon on Friday alone, more than 200 messages from irate homeowners were left at town hall. Some residents said their bill doubled or even tripled to $1,200, and in one reported case above $2,200. But not all the bills were on the high side. Coun. Tom Peckett said a 19-unit apartment complex was blessed with a $50 bill. Another woman tapped the town for a $900 credit. “They don’t seem to know what they’re doing,” said Betty Adams while standing outside town hall Friday, shortly after discussing her bill. At Monday’s regular meeting of council, town treasurer David Pollard explained to a room of some 25 residents the change-over from a mishmash of indoor and outdated meters to the new automated system. Then council decided on three actions: • the due date to pay is extended from Aug. 31 to Dec. 31; • staff will review all bills (with or without clients present) and report to council by September’s end; • town hall hours will be extended to evenings and possibly weekends for staff to meet with residents. Pollard said numerous problems are associated with the 2,770 water bills, sent out July 28. Estimates were used in some cases for up to three bills. See SEVERAL PROBLEMS, Page 3

They’ve built it, now they hope the people will come. Co-organizers Art Smith, Mike Marcil and Glenn Arthur are putting the finishing touches on plans for the festival, which encompasses much of the town and offers a host of events of all kinds for all ages. “It’s a day for the people of Arnprior,” says Smith. “We’ve got activities galore spread all over town. I hope we get the crowds to go with what we’ve built up.

Whether it’s a ball tournament, fashion show or kids’ crafts that tickle your fancy, you’ll find what you’re looking for at the White Pine Festival, says Smith. And a great effort has been made to ensure everyone has a chance to attend, with free buses running regularly on Saturday from a number of stops in town. “We’re trying to get out to all the seniors homes,” said Smith. There have been a few cancellations to note, explained Smith. The Friday evening glow ball golf tournament, Saturday’s airport events and the beach volleyball tournament will not be taking place. For a full listing of activities, see the schedule of events on Pages 16 and 17.
