Dave Reid enters Arnprior mayoral race DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

SMART BOARD All-day kindergarten made its debut at McNab Public School Tuesday. The change is being phased in, so it will be offered at all local elementary schools within five years.

DEADLINE FRIDAY So far it’s a tale of two municipalities when it comes to Arnprior and McNab-Braeside’s response to the Oct. 25 election. Arnprior will likely have four candidates each in the mayor’s and reeve’s races and at least nine for councillor. In McNabBraeside, with the filing of Moira Hutchison for councillor Wednesday morning there were still only five candidates for the five positions. Candidates have until 2 p.m. this Friday (Sept. 10) to file to run for council and school board, unlike previous years when the nomination deadline was 5 p.m. 2, 3

Finally. Arnprior has a mayoral race. A member of one of the town’s most prominent families was due to sign the necessary papers in mid-week. Life-long resident and businessman Dave Reid has entered the race for the town’s top job. He faces Doug Smith, who started campaigning Jan. 4. As of the newspaper’s deadline, Tuesday afternoon, incumbent Terry Gibeau had yet to throw his hat in the ring. Reid has until recently considered jumping into the nine-candidate race for five spots on town council. In an exclusive interview with the Chronicle-Guide, he said after much encouragement from

family and friends, along with “a lot of strong endorsements” from past mayors and others, decided to go for the job. “I’ve thought about politics for a number of years. Ideally, you want to sit on council first to gain experience, but I think I can pick up on things relatively quickly. And I’ve done business with the town over the years, so I have an idea of what it takes,” Reid said. “I also think it’s important to provide residents a choice.” Reid, 52, is semi-retired, having sold many of the companies in his Silver Rapids Holding Ltd., including Reid Bros. Motor Sales and numerous developments. He said he now has time to devote to the job. See CANDIDATE, Page 2

Candidate wants to use business, community experience in mayor’s chair Continued from front “I have the time, energy and a genuine care for the town of Arnprior,” Reid said. “Having been born, lived and raised a family in Arnprior for the past 52 years, I feel I have a good perspective of what the town of Arnprior was in the past, what it is today and what it can be in the future.” He would work to accomplish the following: • Have town hall create “good customer relations” with residents and others; • Encourage progressive, quality and thoughtful developments that meet the needs and desires of the community; • Attract industries and partner with existing industries in order to “help industry lead the way;” • Lower taxes through progressive growth and provide incentives for updating or redeveloping properties; • Create a better sense of community by keeping the downtown core “healthy and beating strong;” • Re-establish Arnprior as the Gateway to the Ottawa Valley by attracting tourists and having industries drive the local economy. Reid is husband to Tracy and father of Alan and Lauren. Along with the Sullivans and Smiths, the Reids have helped shape

Arnprior and contributed in countless ways. For instance, the Reid family donated $100,000 to the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital in recent years. But Dave Reid refused comment during the interview, indicating that the money wasn’t given in order to win an election down the road. Reid has also been involved in numerous service groups, and remains actively involved in the Special Olympics Club, of which his daughter is a member. “I don’t really consider myself to be a politician. I’m a business person, a forward thinker, a compassionate person, a family man,” he said. “I look forward to the challenge.” CURRENT ISSUES On current issues, such as the retail power centre proposal along Highway 417 that fell through earlier this year, Reid offers a nuanced answer. He supports bringing box stores to town, saying they won’t negatively affect small businesses downtown. But he prefers “infill” first, meaning densification through renewing empty buildings and vacant land closer to the core. He pointed to Winner’s Circle as perfect for retail. He said he has many ideas for the water-

Gillies owner Alex Winter vying for reeve’s position Dr. Alex Winter, who has feuded with town hall for much of the time he lived in Arnprior, is seeking the reeve’s chair.

Winter handed in his papers late Tuesday afternoon; look for next week’s newspaper for more indepth coverage.

Kelly: taxes too high Continued from front Kelly has lived in Arnprior for four years, moving from Calabogie and originally hailing from Ottawa. His background includes consulting with the federal government on contracts and financial matters. He said that knowledge prepared him for reducing Arnprior’s tax burden, which he said is 30 per cent higher than neighbouring McNab-Braeside’s. “I like the town. I like the people. That’s why I’m running,” said Kelly, who is single with no children.

Winter and partner Ron MacIntyre own the historic Gillies House, but have had privacy and other issues for many years.

front and surrounding areas, and will make them central to his campaign. “I’m pro-development, but not at all costs.” On the lengthy feud between town hall and the owners of the Gillies House, Reid said there were mistakes made on both sides. He said good neighbours discuss issues and arrive at solutions acceptable to everyone. On the water bills issue, he said clear and effective communication was lacking. On the gazebo that has taken weeks to be removed from public property, Reid said bylaws have to apply evenly to everyone. The decision should have been arrived at more quickly. On the centrifuge issue, Reid said he is afforded hindsight on the controversy, but knows local mechanic Dwight Badham and would have given him a fair shot at winning the contract. On the current mayor and the mayoral candidate? “I wish them well. This is not about vendettas. I have respect for Terry Gibeau. He’s done his best,” Reid said. “I believe we need new blood. As for Doug Smith, I don’t know him well enough to say.” As for taking on the role of mayor without having past experience in politics? “Some of our best mayors have had no experience,” he said.

ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE - September 9 2010

Pitching herself as a regular person who does what is best for the community as a whole, Nancy Black is asking voters to let her sit on Arnprior council once again after the Oct. 25 election. “I’m an ordinary person. I like people. I listen to people, listen to everybody,” Black said from her 35-year-old hair dressing shop at her home on McGonigal Street. “I’ve proven to be reliable, hardworking and fair.” One of the founders of the downtown business improvement area (BIA) in the late 1980s, Black saw entering municipal politics as a natural progression, a way to bridge her interests in small business with public decision-making. She brings the steady hand of experience, saying the death of business in the core has been pronounced at least three times. But it keeps chugging along. Currently, Black represents the town on the Economic Development Committee, which has partnered with the BIA and the Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce to complete a community improvement plan and map development for years to come. The group’s next challenge is to brand and market the town to potential business owners and tourists. Black is the lone woman on council, and some have said she finishes with a high number of votes over successive elections due that fact. She admits some women might vote for her on the basis of her gender, but she flatly denies her success is due to that alone. “I’m sure some do, but I hope it isn’t the only reason people vote for me,” she said. “That isn’t the only role for me. I listen. I don’t speak just to hear myself talk. I do what’s best for the town.” She offered a word of warning for candidates who may have entered the race to champion one issue; it’s a long four years with many issues that will have be tackled. She said, without naming names, she hopes candidates are in the race for the right reasons. She cited the numerous public infrastructure upgrades and expansions as proof council has been successful and responsible over the last four years. The “hard” infrastructure jobs such as replacing sewer lines doesn’t win as many votes as “soft” projects like opening new parks. But they needed to be done, she said. “It’s like owning your own home. You’d love to have a hot tub, but if you need a roof you have to pay for that first. That’s what we did,” she said. “It’s been really tough in the recession.

Nancy Black: running again. I’m one who had to work really hard for money in my business. But you do a plan and figure out your priorities and you stick to them.” She said the next council won’t have a lot of money to work with, but some items mandated by the province, such as providing accessibility at public buildings, will have to be dealt with. Among them will be the possibility of building a new town hall that will attract more services from upper levels of government. Critics say Black is under Mayor Terry Gibeau’s thumb, and too often votes on the same side as he. She gave a hearty laugh at the notion. “I make my own decisions. If it’s the right thing, I go along. There have been times that I haven’t gone along,” she said. “I wouldn’t say I’ve been under anybody’s influence.” She added that she has sat next to many mayors, all with strengths and weaknesses. Put on the spot to provide an example of when she voted against Gibeau, Black couldn’t come up with one. However, a recent example is the electronic voting issue. Gibeau was against it; Black voted to institute it. Her side won. Black, who is married to Pat Grenier, sits on the Doctor Recruitment Committee and Communities in Bloom. As one of the members of the latter group, she helped hand out some 500 white pines at the recent White Pine festival. “We had a great time. There were lots of young families,” she said. “I think you have to like people in politics. And I really do. I’ve gotten along well with all councillors, staff; you have to look at things fairly. And I think I do that.”

At one time, he was employed at Arnprior hospital one day a week. Scheels said Toop maintained his sense of humour to the end. When he used a cane in later life, he was fond of saying he needed it to keep the woman away. He also had a book entitled ‘All I know about beekeeping’. When you opened it, the pages were blank, Scheels chuckled. One of his favourite quotations was “everyone is right in their own eyes.” Scheels said Toop was a great neighbour and was especially grateful for his good friend Stan Headrick keeping an eye on him in his latter years. Toop was predeceased by his wife, Grace, in 1995. He is survived by his children Judy, Janet, Cheryl, Cathy and Deborah; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His funeral was held Saturday, Sept. 4 in the Boyce Funeral Chapel.

Harry Toop’s many friends in the Arnprior area are mourning the death of the popular beekeeper. Toop died last week at the age of 93. For decades he had been a beekeeper in on Dwyer Hill Road between Arnprior and Galetta Side Road on what used to be called the Third Line. At one time, Toop’s honey was found at most area outlets. Doug Scheels is one of many area oldtimers who remember Toop fondly. He took life and his responsibilities seriously, but had a great sense of humour, he said. “He was top of the line … and really enjoyed people. He was very friendly. He could converse with anyone. “He always strong in his faith,” said Scheels, adding he’ll never forget “that special smile that was always on his face.” He said that Toop was not only a beekeeper, he did bee inspections, helped others avoid bee diseases, and built hives and frames, shipping them as far as Western Canada. While known primarily as a beekeeper, Toop was a fixture at local hockey matches in his position as a St. John Ambulance attendant.

JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

From the many conversations I have had with residents of Arnprior, its obvious the mood is such that, they want changes made in the way our municipality is governed. The cross-section of these changes varies considerably. The primary topic that I encounter almost daily, is where I stand on “Box Stores” and how will it impact on Arnprior’s future if in fact they materialize. My view point is that there’s a three prong result that will impact on our community’s future. The major complex that is proposed across the highway will provide positive results elsewhere in our community. The number of new employment opportunities that will appeal to a varied skilled work-force will impact on the spending in other areas of town such as the existing mall and adjacent stores, as well as the downtown core. A shopping complex made up of major ‘Box Stores’ will also attract shoppers from outside the community, such as White Lake to Burnstown, and Galetta, Kinburn and perhaps up the Ottawa River corridor to Sandpoint. With new vitality pumped into our town, Arnprior will more than likely, draw more visitors and present an environment for new residents to consider locating here as all the necessary requirements, such as schools, 413356

and churches are already in place. The new council that is needed to guide this progress must be made up of those who have foresight and conviction, to bring such plans to a successful accomplishment. I believe, that over the years, that I have resided in Arnprior, that I have demonstrated such conviction and passion to make our community as appealing to others as it was to my wife and I when we chose Arnprior as our home and a good community to raise our 3 children. Both I and my family have never regretted that decision. It is with this conviction that I ask you for your support in being one of your choices for Arnprior Councillor. You can vote by telephone or on line at your convenience beginning October 18th, 2010 to October 25th, 2010. Please exercise your voting rights. Thanking you in advance. Douglas C. Area schools welcome new principals Bronwyn Scott McNab Public School Bronwyn Scott is the new principal at McNab Public School. Scott comes to McNab from Central Public School in Renfrew where she spent six-anda-half years as principal. Originally from Australia, she has many years of experience at a number of local schools and has also been a teacher, parent and member of school council. She was vice-principal of Walter Zadow Public School before her stint at Central. She is very excited about the introduction of full-day kindergarten at the school this year and is enjoying getting to know the staff and students. “I’m thrilled to be here. This is a great school,” said Scott. Scott replaces Jodie Barrett, who was appointed the Renfrew County District Public School Board’s principal for special services.

Back to school is an exciting time for all students and staff but this year is extra special at McNab Public School. While also welcoming new principal Bronwyn Scott, McNab is the first local school to introduce the Early Learning Program, which will see junior and senior kindergarten students in school every day of the week for the full day. Scott said she and staff at her previous school, Central, had hoped it would be introduced there (McNab, Cobden and Beachburg public schools are the first in the area to implement it, but it will be phased in at other schools over the next five years) so she was pleasantly surprised Work has been going on over the summer to prepare the kindergarten classes for the change. “It’s beautiful – bright and airy. It’s very vibrant and inviting,” said Scott. Physical changes include renovation of the kindergarten rooms so that there are now two double-size rooms for the about 52 students, additional cupboard space, fresh paint and custom-made steps so the little ones have easy access to the smart board. McNab has been chosen by the ministry to be a little bit of a showcase,” said Scott. “So others will have a chance to come and look at the setup.” She expects there will be regular visitors to the school as other facilities prepare to implement the all-day kindergarten. McNab’s kindergarten team, made up of early childhood educators and kindergarten teachers, has been busily preparing for the term, having already completed a two-day workshop. Team members include ministry liaison Therese Narbonne, plant department officials, literacy coach Trish Turner, Karen Boese, Sarah Ray, Kristy Campbell and Laurie Hill. As of yet, there are no after-school programs in place at the school. The introduction of staggered bells in the county means the school day starts and ends later this year, bell times are 9:15 a.m. and 3:35 p.m. There was not enough interest to warrant before or after-school programs yet, but that may change, said Scott, as parents adjust to the new start times. Parents have so far responded positively to the change, says kindergarten teacher Karen Boese. “They’re looking forward to them going every day,” said Boese. Those concerned a full week of school will be too taxing on young students are reassured the students will be looked after. “It’s play-based learning. There are lots of activities and there are opportunities to rest, too,” said Boese.

Be alert for students: OPP

New child tax credit planned The provincial government is proposing a new permanent, refundable tax credit that would make it a little easier for Ontario parents to get their children involved in sports, arts and other activities. Under the proposed tax credit, parents would be able to claim up to $500 of eligible expenses per child. They would receive a refundable tax credit worth up to $50 per child, or up to $100 for a child with a disability. The tax credit could benefit over 1.8 million children in Ontario. Ontario’s tax credit would build on a similar federal government program.

However, Ontario’s tax credit would be broader in scope – it would apply to more than just sports activities – and it would be a refundable credit that benefits all families, including those with low incomes. The province intends to introduce legislation this fall that will provide details about the new tax credit. This credit would apply to any eligible expenses incurred on or after Jan. 1, 2010, meaning parents would receive a credit after they file their 2010 tax returns. Critics have suggested the tax credit will not make up for the extra costs due to the HST.

School buses are back with the return of schools days Tuesday. Arnprior OPP reminds motorists to be aware there are many more students on roadways, crosswalks and getting on and off buses. It is an offence to pass a school bus that has its red flashing lights activated and is loading or unloading children.

Above and right, Emily Gonzalez gets up close to the smart board during a visit to McNab school last week. She is among the first students in the county to attend full-day kindergarten. The school has provided steps so the young students can access the smart board. Left, kindergarten teachers Sarah Ray and Karen Boese work to prepare the classroom.

Campanale sets sights on new development DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

It was a good summer for sales at Campanale Homes, and as it begins the final phase of its residential development between Madawaska Boulevard and the Madawaska River, owner Vince Campanale already has his sights set on an even bigger project. “We opened phase three two months ago and sold 12 already, in the summer when a lot of people are away,” Campanale said. “We’re very satisfied with the first opening.” Phase three includes 178 lots, though only 45 are left. Many are pie lots and back onto greenspace near the trestle and disused tracks. Four have semi-detacheds and four attached bungalows are available and ready to move in within 60 days. “They are really desirable, very private with sun in the backyard,” he said. “It’s all about sun therapy.” Phase two had 76 lots to start, but only has eight waterfront lots left. Phase one sold out of all 45 lots. The project started less than five years ago. However, a much larger residential development is planned for the former Callaghan farm between Division Street South and Baskin Drive West. And Campanale is excited to get start-

The lots are huge, close to the highway, schools the mall,” Campanale said. “And now we have new designs and models to offer.” BOON TO TOWN The revenue to the Town of Arnprior will also prove impressive. Each property will pay $4,000 in development charges, adding $1.3 million in one-time funding to town coffers.

Then there are the annual taxes, which will result in at least an additional $750,000 to the town. Campanale homes are characterized by peaked roofs, often double car garages, arched windows, vaulted or coffered ceilings, all brick facades and quality materials. Local contractors are hired where possible. Prices range from $238,000 for a semi to $335,000 for two storeys. “We have different homes for different people. Some for retirees, some for young families,” Campanale said.

Land Preservation Society reborn, chooses new executive JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

The revived Land Preservation Society of the Ottawa Valley has chosen an executive and is ready to move forward on improvements to Gillies Grove. With a new group of 10 directors in place, president Brad Moore is excited about the prospect of enhancing the Grove. “We want to make

the Grove experience better for everybody,” he said. “We have a bit of money and a very motivated group,” he said. The society is anxious to work handin-hand with Arnprior, McNab-Braeside and other community partners to develop a plan of improvements, he said. Moore said the group is working on establishing a new purpose, as the society

went into dormancy after it had succeeded in its original goal, to save the Grove from development. One of the mandates will be continuing to education the public about why the Grove is so special, he said. “We’ll be moving ahead with little steps,” he said. “We’re focusing on projects we can accomplish.” Joining Moore on the executive is Gillies home co-

owner Alex Winter as vicepresident, Tara Pocket as secretary and Gerry White as treasurer. “We have a group of people that really work well together,” said Moore. Moore said the society may broaden its horizons down the road to help preserve other environmentally sensitive areas, but right now is concentrating on the Grove.

With a vote expected Sept. 22 to scrap the federal long gun registry, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant is asking her constituents to urge friends living in non-Conservative ridings to lobby their MPS to support the move. “I am asking every interested farmer, hunter and sport-shooting enthusiast to talk to people they know who live in ridings which are not represented by a Conservative MP, and ask their representative in Ottawa to vote in favour of Bill C-391,” she said in a news release. Gallant has promised since she was elected a decade ago that a Conservative government will eliminate the “wasteful registry.” The vote is expected to be close, with the country’s police chiefs arguing that it should be retained because it improves the safety of police officers. However, Conservatives argue the registry is costly and ineffective. The Private Member’s Bill was proposed to allow for a free vote, but Conservative

MPs have been ordered to support it and the Liberals ordered to vote no. The NDP is allowing their MPs to vote their conscience. Gallant said she is “hopeful that the few remaining Opposition MPs in rural Canada will listen to their constituents and do the right thing and vote to scrap the registry.” She said last month’s gun show in Eganville “was a huge success due to the optimism among area sportsmen that the end is in sight for the expensive gun registry. Hunters who took the time to express their support for my

opposition to the registry were very much appreciated. “The gun registry is symbolic of every reason why the Opposition/Separatist coalition must never be allowed to come to power in this country,” said Gallant. “There was no consultation with rural Canada, just threats of jail terms and confiscation.” Gallant charged that before the minority Conservative government was elected, Canada was drifting farther and farther to the left, with more rules and regulations, such as the gun registry, and higher taxes.

Liberal farmer’s forum Sept. 23 The federal Liberals will hold a town hall meeting on agriculture in the riding Thursday, Sept. 23. The forum, sponsored by federal Liberal Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke candidate Christine Tabbert and the riding’s federal Liberal association, will start at 8 p.m. at the Cobden Agricultural Hall. The special guest panelist will be Prince Edward Island Liberal MP Wayne Easter, who is the party’s Agriculture Critic. Easter has served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood as well as Fisheries and Oceans. The meeting will be an open forum where everyone is invited to bring questions and ideas about how hope can be restored for a sustainable future for agriculture in Canada. “Everyone is most welcome as we anticipate some solid input and discussion on this vital topic for our community,” says a Liberal news release announcing the meeting.

Solid candidates stepped forward

Festival successful because of visitors, not townsfolk

W

hile the speculation on the street has it that more candidates will step forward before tomorrow’s deadline, there is little doubt as of today that Arnprior voters have a fine crop to pick from in October’s municipal election. Hardworking Doug Smith takes on a highly successful Dave Reid and an adept Ted Kelly for the top job of mayor. The reeve’s position will see an interesting race between incumbent Walter Stack, councillors Eric Burton and Tom Peckett, and now Alex Winter. Winter was indirectly criticized just last week in a letter to the editor for not participating in town activities. Jumping into an election and asking to spend the next four years finding solutions to some – often dry – issues for little pay is a pretty impressive response. Then there are the council candidates. Voters are tasked with choosing from incumbents with solid track records to former incumbents who’ve been re-energized, to people with expertise in everything from sales to information technology to managing people and budgets to pro football. The problem is not finding quality candidates to fill all five positions. The problem is which capable people to leave out. Arnprior has many great attributes. And it has many challenges, too. We plan to continue focusing on the issues, forcing candidates to provide thoughtful and candid responses for our readers to digest. However, we would fool no one if we said personalities don’t matter. They do matter. That’s what makes politics such a difficult business. Many aspects of a candidate’s life are scrutinized. And they willingly put it out there – one of the many admirable traits we in the media don’t applaud politicians for often enough. But there is a difference between observing someone’s personality and getting personal. We hope the latter will be off limits; that every candidate realizes their competition has flaws like everyone else; that they have families, friends and wants only the best for the town. With that said, let’s have a clean and hard race over the next month and a half. And may the best candidates win.

Council conduct childish To the editor: Our municipality, our town, our people; Arnprior became my home in 1982. I’ve lived in many different cities/towns in Canada and abroad. I had intended my stay in Arnprior to be temporary. Once here, however, it’s charm, neighbourly tone and old world atmosphere made me stay. I believe one of the foundations that gave the town such a provocative air and acted as heart and soul of this community was the town council and the integrity of its conscientious members. There’s been derision at times, disagreements abound in committee, but that’s a healthy way to ensure representation of the community’s needs, and consensus. The present administration has pushed this envelope of derision past the point of respectability in recent years. Questionable conduct on the part of our mayor has repeatedly made its way into a forum dedicated to the public, not an

individual. Citizens are scared and angered by indefensibly outrageous bills. A reasonable offer to help repair a turbine turned into a condescending slap in the face for a local man, but a lucrative job for the out-of-town company that built it … members of council involved in childish taunts … subterfuge of the political process. The long list belies the nature of this administration. It is sick. The attitude of the mayor transcends virtue. Some council members have shown open hostility towards what must be considered ‘the public good’. In researching the Criminal Code of Canada, I could not find a statute dealing with political criminal stupidity. It’s unfortunate, because first-degree charges would be laid. The coming election is our best opportunity to voice disenchantment with the status quo.

To the editor: First, on behalf of the Arnprior White Festival, we would like to commend the staff of the Chronicle-Guide on the super media coverage we received from the Chronicle-Guide and all other local media groups. Many thanks. Would just like to make a few comments on your editorial (Chronicle-Guide, Sept. 2) as per above. The festival was a great success. I fully agree with you that the only way to keep it growing and be a major part of the community of Arnprior is through both kudos and criticism from all concerned. We are opened to this and ask for it ourselves. It was unfortunate that few of the vendors passed in front of the stage Sunday, but at least both days they stayed opened and around longer than some of our own businesses in our downtown core did. A lot of time, effort and $Dollars$ went into this, more for their benefit than I guess they realize. Also of note, with an election year right behind us, some of our would-be council were also absent. Even one of our stores downtown run by one of the new contenders promised us the use of his store for an electrical outlet for one of the events and then just before noon told us no, he was closing up because his wife was ill. We were pleased to see her illness wasn’t too serious, as they were both on the streets about one hour later canvassing. As well many kudos were received and really no criticisms. Especially from the citizens of Arnprior. Of the close to 7,000 visitors, less than 1/10th of them were from our town. Unfortunately if this is printed in the Chronicle-Guide only about 40 per cent of those in town will read it, and the other 60 per cent of the Chronicle-Guide will be wasted. That is why most functions are not well-attended unless we advertise outside of town. Remember we billed this festival as a festival for the Town of Arnprior by the people of Arnprior. Where were you? We missed a great day.

To the editor: Jean Vanier founded the first L’Arche community in Trosly, France in 1964. There are now 137 communities throughout the world. L’Arche communities consist of people with and without developmental disabilities who share life together. Mutual relationships and trust in God are at the heart of our journey together. Those communities that have greater material wealth are in solidarity with communities that are much poorer in resources. Communities in Canada have a particular link with the communities in Latin America. The world is well aware of the devastation that occurred with the earthquake in Haiti. In past years, the L’Arche Arnprior Fun/Run Walk has raised funds to cover costs that are beyond our operating budget. This year, we committed the full proceeds of our annual Fun/Run Walk Aug. 21, to L’Arche in Haiti. As many newspapers highlighted on July 12, the six-month anniversary of

are plans to build temporary shelters with funds that have come from the gifts of friends of L’Arche without having to seek support from the NGOs which are inundated with urgent needs. To quote a spokesperson for L’Arche Haiti: “We are completely humbled by the sheer enormity of the misery and poverty of the current situation, but we are also deeply moved by the acts of kindness and solidarity that, despite it all, continue to be offered. Thank you for walking with L’Arche Haiti on this road of humility and humanity.” L’Arche Arnprior says thank you to all who have contributed to our effort to help L’Arche Haiti. Many people are still completely destitute. The community of L’Arche Carrefour in a suburb of Port-au-Prince was at the centre of this earthquake. Two board members there lost their lives.

Homes were destroyed. Little by little, the L’Arche community is moving forward. Life is being lived in tents at this time, and some 70 of L’Arche Carrefour’s neighbours who had nowhere to go, have been welcomed to this little tent village. This is a universal gift in L’Arche in poverty of any sort, there is always the richness of relationships. There

To the editor: The comments listed below are my opinion. First, the candidate debate set for October. As you are aware I ran for a councillor position four years ago and was part of the nine persons on stage answering questions (new Town Hall and whether to keep local OPP or go with local policing). As there were nine of us to speak on each topic, there was time to kill. I counted approximately 81 people in attendance at the Nick Smith Centre that night. Once I had subtracted family members, friends, Nick Smith employees, the narrator, and Cogeco staff, there were about 20 residents left

to hear what I and the other candidates had to say. I know it was broadcast on Cogeco, but a lot of residents of the Town of Arnprior are on satellite. My suggestion to the residents of Arnprior if you have a question or concern on a topic, why not call the candidate (our phone numbers are in the phone book) or email us (our email address and telephone number are listed on the Town’s website). This way you’re not losing time going to the Nick Smith Centre or answering the door (during a football game/game show/soap) to have someone give you a card or make a ‘pitch’. Second opinion: Hey we live in a great town. When talking to or about

Arnprior, why not “bring on” the positives: marina, airport, walking trails, golf courses, swimming pools, two hockey rinks, curling, ball diamonds, super park to have a picnic (Robert Simpson), bowling, numerous restaurants and a downtown core that has a host of small shops that have to be visited to enjoy. Forget about “personal” agendas/ grudges and live for today; you never know you might not be here tomorrow. And yes there are a few cemeteries plots that are available through the town office. Election about debating issues, finding solutions To the editor: With the 2010 election season now upon us, I want to thank the people of Arnprior for giving me the privilege of serving the community as town councillor for the past four years. It has been a demanding job with many ups and downs. Through it all, I have taken to heart the input of residents and done my best to be a positive

and proactive member of council. Moving forward, I hope to have the opportunity to bring that same positive attitude, determination and openness to the County of Renfrew as Arnprior’s Reeve. On the campaign trail leading to election day, I will continue to knock on doors to get your input on the challenges and opportunities our community faces. Along

the way, I invite you to approach me on the street, call me on the phone, join me on Facebook or come out to community events to talk about what matters most to you. On Saturday, Sept. 25 you will find me helping the Environmental Action Council to clean up Arnprior’s shorelines. And on Friday, Oct. 8 I will be hosting a Thanksgiving Spaghetti Supper and Euchre Night

featuring live entertainment to rally community support. Indeed, these coming weeks will be exciting. I wish my fellow candidates all the best as we debate the issues and find local solutions that will bring prosperity and the highest quality of life to our residents, young and old. Ottawa police report an unusual crime on Herrick Road on the outskirts of Arnprior. Sometime between Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 1 at 7 a.m., unidentified culprits attempted to break into the Valley Rent Rite store. The would-be thieves attempted to pull

open a steel front door using a chain and a small vehicle. Police say they believe the culprits’ break-in attempt was foiled by the fact that the door opened inwards rather than outwards. Anyone with information on this or other crimes is asked to call CrimeStoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477.

ADHS grad ‘top emerging sculptor’ JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

Troy Coulterman of Arnprior has received national recognition as the Top Emerging Sculptor in Canada for 2010. The Sculptors Society of Canada presented the Arnprior District High School graduate with the Abraham and Malka Green Sculptor Award and $500 Aug. 12 in Toronto for his work called ‘Jellyfish’. Coulterman was among the top 10 young emerging artists, based on 20 pieces of work chosen from more than 130 submissions from across Canada, invited to the Canadian Sculptor Centre for an opening reception and award presentation of the 11th annual Juried Emerging Sculptors Exhibition. The front of the pamphlet publicizing the exhibition, which

runs Aug. 10 to Sept. 10, features Coulterman’s work, Cherbonyl Sleeps in a Radian Fire. Coulterman, who graduated from York University in 2006 with a degree in Visual Arts, has been accepted at the University of Regina in the Master of Fine Arts (Sculpture Major) program. In a letter congratulating him on the award, sculpture centre co-director Judi Michelle Young wrote: “it was a pleasure to meet you and your excellent work … again! “We look forward to seeing your advancement in the years to come. Wishing you much success at University of Regina.” For more on Coulterman’s studio, see his website at www. troycoulterman.com where his sculptures are described as tending to “portray an image of exaggerated realism with hints of suggestive humour.”

Organizers of the annual Walk, Wheel and Run fundraiser for Community Living Renfrew County South are taking the event to a whole new level. The seventh annual fundraiser is adding a competitive element that could attract a large number of runners to Arnprior. However, the fun run side of the event will be maintained for those who want to enjoy a leisurely outing through the scenic town, say organizers. The Unity Run will be held Saturday, Oct. 16 with 3-, 5- and 10-km runs. There will be microchip timing provided, so runners will be able to officially register their times. There will also be a 1-km walk for families who prefer to walk the course. Pledges are made by participants in support of people with developmental disabilities. “It’s been a low-key fun run event in past years, but there is a renewed interest,” said Jane Dowd, who is organizing the event with a team that also includes Arnprior Home Hardware’s Neil Slater and Community Living Renfrew County South executive Jennifer Creeden. “I think we have a good team,” said Dowd. “This could become huge.” Creeden said it started as an activity for Community Living staff, clients and families. “But it’s grown by leaps and bounds,” she said. Dowd said the interest in the Olympic Torch run prompted the organizers to consider adding a competitive element to their run. “It will bring people to town,” said Slater. “We have a beautiful town and this will help bring people in to see what we have to offer. It can become a showcase for the town.” Dowd noted the event has always included a four-member team challenge, won last year by McNab Public School. “I’m sure they’ll be back to defend their crown,” she said, adding they’ll be challenging Walter Zadow and A.J. Charbonneau schools to participate too. Businesses enter teams too, she said, noting RONA won the team challenge for a number of years. That competition is based on spirit, time and money raised, she said. Dowd said the entry fee (for pledges) will re-

Catholic school board schools, staff backs backpack program Renfrew County Catholic District School Board staff are helping the Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) provide well-stocked backpacks for needy children. Director of Education Michele Arbour presented CPAN with $2,332.51 last week on behalf of Catholic school board staff throughout the county. “The Child Poverty Action Network makes a concrete difference in the lives of many of our poorest students by helping ensure that they can participate fully in all aspects of school life,” said Arbour. “The mandate of CPAN aligns closely with our board’s strategic plan and our mandate to advocate for the poor both locally and globally.” This spring, Arbour put out a plea to all staff, asking them to support CPAN’s $100,000 fundraising drive for backpacks. The cost of a backpack, with running shoes and school supplies, is about $60 per child, so the school board’s contribution will make a significant difference for a number of local students this fall. When informed of the fundraising efforts, CPAN co-ordinator Lyn Smith was

delighted. “We are very happy to accept this donation for Backpack Plus. This is a shining example of a community partner supporting CPAN in order to keep this much needed program running and available,” she said. “Despite having no sustainable funding we are committed to keep Backpack Plus running for as long as there are still children and youth ... in need of assistance. We are very proud to have Renfrew County Catholic District School Board in our community and on our membership.” “As a Catholic education system, we are called to reach out to embrace social justice and to make a difference for others,” said Arbour. “I’m delighted with the way our staff has responded to this need.” Donations for the school board contribution were received from throughout the county. The contributors included school principals, teachers and support staff, as well as trustees, managers and employees in the board’s administrative offices. Anyone interested in learning more about CPAN and the backpack campaign should visit www.renfrewcountycpan.ca or call 1-800-465-1870, ext. 250.

mains at $25, much cheaper that most other runs. “It’s a real bargain,” she said. Organizers have already lined up such sponsors as the Town of Arnprior, Arnprior Legion, Tim Hortons, Pilon’s Funeral Home, Prior Sports Bar, Scotiabank, Jim’s Auto Glass, Bosa’s Custom Cabinets, Gilk’s Signs and Trophies, Braeside Home Furnishing, Arnprior Optimists, White Lake Marina, Bayview Lodge, Chris Toner Landscaping, Thomas Cavanagh and many more. “People have been really good,” said Dowd, adding the more sponsors the better. Dowd said word of mouth is already spreading about the expanded run, with people even talking about dressing in costumes. People are welcome to walk their dogs as long as they are under control and they follow the poop-and-scoop bylaws. Dowd said the event owes a huge debt of gratitude to Judy Pierce, who has been a key organizer for the previous six years. She has also been a great help this year, she added. Dowd also praised Slater for his efforts in getting sponsors, which has been crucial to the event’s expansion. “He stepped up because he believes Arnprior can host such an event and help Community Living at the same time,” said Dowd. She said the event has potential, but just the fact it gets people out doing an activity is a positive for the community. Registration (pledge) forms are available at the Arnprior and Renfrew Community Living offices, Arnprior Home Hardware and the Nick Smith Centre. Registration can also be done on-line.

More foundation fundraising needed to support new facility

The Arnprior construction firm, M. Sullivan & Son Ltd., has won the bid to build the new auditorium at Bonnechere Manor. The Renfrew long-term care facility, which is operated by the County of Renfrew, has been without an auditorium since it opened in 1995. The former Bonnechere Manor building did contain an auditorium. Construction of the much-needed facility is scheduled for this fall, with an of-

ficial ground-breaking ceremony set for Monday, Sept. 21. M. Sullivan & Son was the only company to bid on the project, whose application deadline was July 28. The winning bid was just under $1.1 million, including a philanthropic contribution from the Arnprior company of $100,000. Project costs will be shared by the county, the City of Pembroke, and the Bonnechere Manor Foundation. The county’s portion will come from remaining Investing in Ontario funds of $353,939, while the foundation has raised $310,000 to date, according to the manor’s community af-

She is very affectionate and sweet and loves attention. Abbie is playful, curious and gentle – a cat that would be good with children. She tolerates other cats but prefers her own space. Abbie is at the Arnprior Pet Valu for viewing.

# 3779 Alyssa Alyssa is one of Abbie’s sisters. The ninemonth-old spayed female is a very easygoing cat. She likes the company of other cats and enjoys being around people. She is friendly and very affectionate. She likes to play but is also very snuggly. Like Abbie, Alyssa will be a good cat with children. Please consider welcoming this kitty into your home and heart. Supplies the shelter needs: Whiskas Meaty Selections dry cat food, dry kitten food, paper towels and bleach.

‘Granny fraud’ hits the Valley A fraudulent scheme, commonly referred to as “Granny fraud” has claimed a victim in the Renfrew area, report Renfrew OPP. The victim is contacted by someone claiming to be one of their grandchildren. They state they are in

trouble, either involved in a car crash or in jail, and need bail money. The victim is then instructed to wire money to an alleged lawyer or police officer, and is always asked not to tell anyone. Anyone contacted with a request of

this nature should always verify the information or whereabouts of the ‘grandchild’ with a family member or police. People are often embarrassed by being duped, and don’t report the fraud to anyone. Renfrew OPP are encouraging anyone who has been targeted to contact them, as these criminals are professionals and there is nothing to be embarrassed about.

If you have any information or concerns, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 DOMESTIC DISPUTES Renfrew OPP officers responded to three domestic disputes in the last two weeks of August. One female was charged with being intoxicated in a public place. One man was charged with assault.

Drinking-driving message driven home by cross john.carter@metroland.com

The devastating consequences of drinking and driving can last a lifetime. Ask Callum Scott as he lovingly placed a hand-made cross alongside old Highway 17 near Antrim Saturday marking the 50th anniversary of the death of his mother. Scott was only four years old when Eileen Mabel Scott (nee Steele) of Renfrew was killed Sept. 4, 1960 in an horrific head-on crash on the highway between Antrim and the Mississippi River bridge. Eileen Scott died at the age of 28, leaving her husband, Walter, a widower, and three children – Janice, Callum and Robert – without a mother. According to news reports of the incident, police determined the collision, which also killed three people in the other car, was the result of drinking and driving. Walter and Eileen Scott were returning with best friends Tom and Fern McDowell, also of Renfrew, from a Labour Day

weekend Ottawa Roughriders football game. They had just passed by Antrim about 11 p.m. when a vehicle coming toward them from a party in Rhoddy’s Bay pulled out to pass a line of cars. Eileen Scott, who was sitting in the front passenger seat took the brunt of the collision and died on the scene. “I lost my beautiful and most talented mother, forever,” said Callum. “Families were shattered, hearts broken, hopes and dreams perished,” said Scott. He noted the family was only two days away from moving from their house at 305 Lochiel St. to a newly completed home, which his mother helped design, on Stevenson Crescent. Scott was raised in Renfrew and worked for a time at Gillies Lumber in Braeside. He has been thinking about commemorating the 50th anniversary of his mother’s death for many years, especially after he returned to Renfrew to live. As the day grew near, he crafted a cross with a photograph of his parents and an-

other of his mother playing a violin to place on the spot where she died. “So on this solemn day of remembrance, as I reflect on what happened to my family on this stretch of Highway 17 so many years ago, (with this cross I say) ‘I love you mom’ and I will remember you as you are in my thoughts each and every day,” he said.

Scott advises everyone who reads the story to give his or her mother a big hug and tell her “I love you mom,” because she too will someday be gone forever. “I did not have that opportunity (because of drinking and driving),” he said. “Drinking and driving are a deadly duo where there are no winners. The message is simple: If you drink, don’t drive.”

Arnprior captures 2010 Gordon Cup PETER CLARK peter.clark@metroland.com

The prestigious Gordon Cup title is back in Arnprior. On Sunday, the Arnprior Golf Club captured the 81st Gordon Cup, contested annually over two days on Labour Day Weekend. The Saturday-Sunday event was hosted this year by the Deep River Golf Club. Fourteen players from each of five competing Valley clubs take to the course over 36 holes with the top 12 scores from each of the two days counting to the final total. Arnprior’s win Sunday was the club’s second in four years. The local squad won in convincing fashion with a 36-hole 1,833, which bettered runner-up Renfrew’s 1,867 tally by 34 shots. The Renfrew club had won 17 of the previous 22 Gordon Cup tournaments. Deep River at 1,883, defending Cup champion Pembroke 1,894 and Mississippi in 1,907, completed the five-team scoreboard. Arnprior team captain Jeff McCormick said the team was confident, but took nothing for granted heading into the Gordon Cup. “We had a good sense going into the tournament,” McCormick said. “It is what they play for all summer. It’s a great honour.” Allen McGee, a household name in Arnprior golf circles, continued his fine 2010 season with a 64 on day two Sunday, the lowest score ever recorded at the Deep River Golf Club. Mississippi will host the 2011 Gordon Cup. Arnprior scores: Allen McGee 71-64-135, Mike Payer 73-70143, Nathan Callighen 73-75-148, Kevin Mulvihill 73-76-149, Travis Fraser 76-74-150, Taylor Collins 77-74-151, Chris Bernard 74-79-153, Jason McCormick 75-82-157, Matt Mulvihill 82-75-157, Richard Pope 79-81-160, Sean Moore 83-84-167, Jeff McCormick 84-84-168, Cam McIntosh 89-79-168, Terry Olmstead 92-90-182.

TESTING, TESTING Doug Cavanagh of the Kenwood Athletic Centre tests the lactate acidity of young athlete Patrick McGrath during an exercise session at a summer sports camp. The lactose analyser test strip results tells Cavanagh how to tailor the exercise routine to best benefit the athlete. It advises how fast to set the exercise machines and how rigorous a workout the athlete should be undertaking, Cavanagh explained. The summer program was popular with teenagers preparing for the upcoming football and hockey seasons.

The two teams skated to a 2-2 tie, leaving the Packers with two wins and a tie after three pre-season games. The Packers final pre-season game will be played at the Nick Smith Centre versus the Shawville Pontiacs this Sunday, Sept. 12, at 4:30 p.m.

Legris, Mac’s back Arnprior Minor Hockey Arnprior Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) has publicly thanked Jason Legris of Mac’s on White Lake Road for his support of minor hockey in Arnprior and area. Proceeds from the sale of Nevada tickets sold at Mac’s has helped the association with its ongoing replacement of jerseys and outdated equipment. As well, many children in the community have benefited in other ways, particularly through financial assistance with registration fees, and assistance with costs of training and development. AMHA has been able to reimburse coaches for ongoing development courses and also keep the cost of the goalie clinic that has been running for the last three years affordable to all young future stars. The proceeds from the Nevada tickets have also assisted the association with the cost of ice and referees, which are the bulk of the expenses for any minor hockey organization. All parents should realize that the association’s registration fees have remained the same for the last three years. Without the

Many players, including those in the photograph with Legris, have been involved in hockey since they can remember. They have found a sense of pride that comes from wearing team colors, and enjoy fun and

friendships with other players from different schools. Hockey continues to build confidence and great everyday skills in a good social environment. On behalf of all children playing hockey in Arnprior, AMHA appreciates Legris’ continued support. “Thank you from AMHA’s organization, parents and players.”

Holy Broadway next festival concert

Ottawa soprano Cara Gilbertson will join the Ottawa Valley Music Festival when it presents Holy Broadway in Almonte Sunday, Sept. 19. An accomplished vocalist who has performed at the National Arts Centre and with the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra, the Ottawa Bach Choir, the Strings of St. John’s (Ottawa) and at many concerts in Europe, Gilbertson will lend her distinctive voice to an exciting repertoire of music that encompasses the sacred and, to some, the sacreligious. There will be selections from Godspell, Joseph and his Amaz-

More than 100 children registered for the TD Summer Reading Club at the Arnprior Public Library and of those, 98 read at least 10 books and received an invitation to the Reading Club Party and Peter Mennie show on Aug. 24. Barbershop singers wanted The Valley Harmonizers Senior Barbershop Chorus, centered in Renfrew, is looking forward to a busy year singing those old songs. Their 18 current members come from as far away as Deep River and West Carleton, Calabogie and Ladysmith, Quebec. They are looking for other senior men who would like to sing with them. Most sing-outs take place in seniors’ residences throughout the Uupper Valley. Men who like to sing are invited to join the Harmonizers for a few practices to find out how much enjoyment they can have singing a capella music (without accompaniment) in four-part harmony. Practices usually take place at the Renfrew Presbyterian Church Tuesdays, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The ability to read music is not necessary. For more information, call Gord at 613-432-4837.

Ed Stamplecowsky, owner of Top Dog, is thrilled to have reestablished his sausage stand after a three-year absence.

It’s been a couple months since the Top Dog has been back in town and local sausage connoisseurs couldn’t be happier. Ed Stamplecowsky, along with wife Marie, now operates his sausage stand in the Arnprior Giant Tiger parking lot. Previously, Top Dog was at the Canadian Tire location for about 12 years before Ed was sidelined in 2007 as he recovered from a knee replacement “gone bad.” It was tough for Ed to leave behind such a well-established operation. A customer rewards program that was implemented logged 500 regular card-carrying customers – not to mention the many tourists and travelers who dropped by.

‘Bring Ottawa River Summit to Arnprior’ DEREK DUNN

opted to build a pipe out from its treatment plant to the middle of the river in order to release treated sewage. Burton voted against the plan, but couldn’t convince his colleagues to do the same. They said the provincial environment ministry OKed the move, which came as even more of a shock to delegates at the summit. Another troubling development for Burton is the high number of no swimming days at Robert Simpson beach. High levels of e-coli, possibly from agricultural runoff, have meant beachgoers have little to no access to the water. Many local residents say they won’t let their children swim at park even if the signs say they can. They simply don’t trust that government is testing for all forms of bacteria and other pollutants. Burton said that is why he encouraged

derek.dunn@metroland.com

Fresh off his participation at the inaugural Ottawa River Summit, reeve hopeful and Coun. Eric Burton wants to see next year’s event held in Arnprior. The summit, held Aug. 27 at a hotel in Gatineau, brought together stakeholders from up and down the Ottawa River and its tributaries to discuss challenges and form partnerships. Burton and public works director Janet Collins were among the 90 delegates who – led by the Ottawa Riverkeeper and the National Capital Commission – discussed everything from point source pollution to the effects of climate change. “It was overwhelmingly positive,” Burton said. “Everyone felt we need goals to ensure we are not just passing the buck.” There was some dismay that Arnprior

his council colleagues to adopt the Blue Flag Program. It is an eco-label awarded to beaches and marinas that meet strict criteria. Jurisdictions from Lake Ontario to Lake Winnipeg and many parts of the world participate in Blue Flag, but Arnprior council rejected the idea as being possibly bringing too much negative attention. Burton now wants to see the second Ottawa River Summit held in Arnprior. He failed to gain support from council last year to hold the first summit, which many councillors and staff said would prove a logistical nightmare considering the short time-frame. Burton is convinced it would brand Arnprior as an environmentally friendly community willing to proactively support positive initiatives to support the river. Mayor Terry Gibeau is expected to second Burton’s idea at an upcoming council meeting.

Top Dog returns Continued from Page 23 How does it feel to be back in business? “I love it. People kept asking me when I was going to open up again,” says Ed. “The response has been very positive.” Top Dog sausages are specially made for the business, using the couple’s own special recipes. Along with hot dogs, drinks and snacks, seven sausage varieties, are available. Top sellers include Cajun, valley grilled and cheddar, says Ed. The formula is always being tweaked and improved to keep the product top quality, says Ed. “We do a lot of experimenting.” The couple would like to eventually expand the business and is already bringing a second cart to various special events in and around the Valley. Top Dog at Giant Tiger is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

Watch now for the Woolly Wanderers

Why they wander so much remains a mystery. Yellow bears are beautiful caterpillars covered in long soft hairs. Some, as the name suggests, are soft yellow, but others are nearly white and a few even brown. Their adult stage is the Virginia tiger moth. Hairs offer their caterpillar bearers a certain amount of protection from birds;

Aphids have straws for mouthparts. These penetrate bark allowing their owners to enjoy a plant’s sugar-rich liquids. Although large groups of woolly aphids feed on small areas of plants, no damage is done. Because they drink a lot of sugary sap, aphids release liquid in the form of sweet drops known as honeydew. Ants are particularly fond of honeydew and can often be found tending to the aphids as farmers do their cows. LADYBUGS DINE Other animals, however, are also drawn to woolly aphid colonies. I have watched ladybugs feasting on the aphids. While these orangeand-black beetles are easy to see, much more difficult to ob-

serve is another predator, one of the most unusual in the insect world. Caterpillars of harvester butterflies also eat woolly aphids! Harvester caterpillars are white and bear hairs. These pick up wool from their victims, making the caterpillars appear like part of the aphid colony. If you look closely at a number of woolly aphid colonies, you may well find caterpillars of this most unusual butterfly. Woolly aphids seem not aware of the presence of carnivorous caterpillars in their midst. If they were, it certainly would be a hair-raising experience. Recent sightings include sandhill cranes near White Lake (Earl Campbell). The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

cuckoos, however, are the exception as they have special features that allow them to dine with impunity on hairy meals. Another insect also covered in long white hairs is most sedentary, so much so that people usually pass by groups of them without being aware they are living creatures. I am referring to woolly aphids, which at this time of year become increasingly easy to find. Woolly aphids live colonially so you find groups tightly massed together. The white wispy wax-like filaments projecting from each individual coalesce into a woolly mass, hence the name. Alders, as the name suggests, are the host plant, but woolly aphids can also be found on silver maple.

September 9 2010 - ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE

Many of you have noticed that caterpillars, especially larger ones, have recently become much more apparent. This is because some species of moths spend the winter in their caterpillar stage (more appropriately, their pupal stage) under rocks or logs or buried in the ground. Right now the caterpillars can be found on the ground walking around seeking an appropriate site in which to go dormant. Woolly bear and yellow bear caterpillars are particularly easy to find. Woolly bears are those bristly black-and-orange banded caterpillars that never seem to stop walking. Contrary to popular myth, the width of the coloured bands has no relationship with the severity of the winter to come.

At the end of the last school year, Grade 6 students in Angie Miller’s class at Walter Zadow and Arnprior Rotarian Dave Palmer pose with the doll they turned into a somebody and a cake donated by Sweet and Sassy to recognize their good works. The program “assists youth in identifying their passion and then putting the passion into action to help something or someone they care about,” explained Palmer. “They do nice things for others while enhancing their education. What a great way to learn.” The students and their teacher all agreed the Who is Nobody program should return to the school this year.

After-school program, Tween dances coming up fast It’s that time of year again! A new school year! The first week of school is ending and it is time to think of what this school year brings. With the beginning of the school year comes many new things - new goals, new friends, new teachers, and new programs. What else is coming up with the new school year? A dance! Our first Tween dance of the school year is on Sept. 17. This dance is open to students in grades 4 to 8 only. Advance tickets are on sale until Thursday, Sept 16 at 9 p.m. Advance tickets are still $5, but door sales are raised to $8, so get them now. Tickets are now on sale at the Nick Smith Centre. The theme for the dance is what makes it fun. We want to bring back the summer with a Hawaiian Luau theme. Dress in your grass skirts, leis and bright colours to win some awesome prizes. Jesse’s DJ will be

Youth Corner

Kayla Reinert

pumping the music from 7 to 10 p.m. Permission forms must be signed to allow admittance. Adult chaperones are needed for the dance. If we do not get enough chaperones, we will cancel the dance. All chaperones must be 18+ and they must have a clear police records check and call Kayla prior to the dance to discuss the policies and procedures. Parents, call 623-7301, ext. 34 or email today. This year Arnprior schools have changed with the staggered bell system. Some schools are out earlier and others are out later. This can create some problems with afterschool care. The Nick Smith Centre is offering

the After-School Program again this year. With many changes in the school system, from new principals to new bell times, we are still co-ordinating our schedules for the year so keep an eye out for it. This program is a free program geared towards youth of all skill levels in grades 4 to 8. We play active, non-traditional, n o n - c o m p e t i t ive games for an hour after school at each school. Watch in the next few weeks for a schedule. Every week we will be showcasing some more of our exciting new programs - as a sneak peek, we have a Rodeo bus trip coming up in September too. We didn’t forget about Dodgeball. Our new dodgeball will be starting in October of this year. Keep an eye out for schedules and a change of times. For more information, you can contact the Nick Smith Centre at 613-623-7301 or email Kayla Reinert, youth co-ordinator directly at kreinert@ arnprior.ca.

Scouts, Guides to hold registrations at Mall Both the Arnprior Scouts and Guides will be holding registrations at the Arnprior Mall this Saturday, Sept. 11. Both youth groups will be

signing up new members from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Arnprior Scouts is also holding a registration Tuesday, Sept. 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Arnprior Legion.

Wes’ Chips voted among best in region

ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE - September 9 2010

42

Wes’ Chips in Arnprior continues to give the chip wagons in Ottawa a run for their money. The Arnprior landmark, in its 50th year, was voted the fourth most popular chip wagon in the Eastern Ontario and western Quebec region in a CTV Ottawa

contest. First place went to a British double decker bus (with indoor seating) in Manotick. Second went to S&G Fries on Carling Avenue and third to Carp’s Sweet Potato. The contest was meant to show how much support exists

in the public for chip trucks, which are coming under increasing pressure to pay higher fees and submit to more regulations in recent years. Almost 100 chip trucks received votes on the contest website.
