Local councils asked to help recruit doctors DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

UNITY RUN FUN Some people will be seeing red at Saturday’s Unity Run as some runners endure “five kilometers of humiliation for a good cause.” 2

The community has a role to play in addressing the growing doctor shortage, so local councils shouldn’t begrudge contributing tax dollars to the recruitment campaign. That was the message brought to Arnprior and McNab-Braeside councils in the last week. Local physician recruitment committee chairman John Carkner asked both councils to partner with Arnprior District Memorial Hospital in providing $10,000 to help find at least three new doctors to serve the catchment area. It’s not fair that ADHS shoulders all the cost, as it is family physicians not surgeons that are needed, the councils were told. For more, see Page 3.

McNab-Braeside residents will have two more chances to see their council candidates in action prior to the Oct. 25 election. In the aftermath of a well-attended candidate forum Oct. 6 (see Page 4), two groups of

“neighbours” have organized their own all-candidates debates. The forums are scheduled for Braeside tonight (Thursday) and White Lake Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Braeside debate will begin at 7 p.m. in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Parish Hall on Dochart Street. While all nine candidates have been invit-

ed, a portion of the evening will be set aside for a debate between mayoralty candidates Mary Campbell and Elmer Raycroft. The format will allow for members of the audience to ask questions directly to the candidates from the floor. The White Lake meeting will be held at the Women’s Institute Hall at 7 p.m. A group of local

citizens says it planned the meeting so candidates can answer questions directly from the audience and hear a debate between the mayoral candidates. Under the electronic voting system,, McNab-Braeside and Arnprior residents can start voting Monday, Oct. 18. For more on the election, see Pages 4 and 5 and letters on Pages 8 to 12.

Students prepare for Unity Run JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

McNab Public School teacher Karen Boese and her team will be back this Saturday, Oct. 16 to defend the team title in the seventh annual Unity Run. Not to be outdone, Arnprior District High School teacher Carrie Sparling has had her students out running around town training for the event. And the Arnprior Home Hardware gang is getting out the red long johns as they plan to run in them if enough pledges are made (call the pledge line at 613-623-2516). “Five kilometers of humiliation for a very good cause,” is how Home Hardware manager Neil Slater describes it. The new-look event, a fundraiser for Community Living Renfrew County South, has added a serious racing side. However, the Unity Run, formerly the Photo by Nevil Hunt Walk Wheel and Run, is still mostly about Five staff members at Arnprior Home Hardware will hit the streets for a 5K run in long fun. Participants can run, walk, wheel johns if donations to the Unity Run reach their goal. Above, paint manager Clayton or amble one of the four courses, which range from one to 10 kilometres long. Campbell, left, and store manager Ron Smyth model their possible running attire.

Registration for the run begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Nick Smith Centre with the actual run/walk starting about 8:30 a.m. Event marshals hope to have everyone back by 10 a.m. for an awards ceremony. Organizers have maintained the entry fee at $25 in efforts to keep participation rates high. The fee includes a t-shirt. Competitive runners will have their times taken and officially posted. Medals and prizes will be presented to the top finishers. The town has approved the temporary closure of 14 streets to accommodate the fundraiser. Money raised goes to help Community Living’s transportation program for its clients with developmental disabilities. The run has been boosted by a major increase in sponsorship support this year. Entry forms are available from the Community Living office at 68 Daniel St. North in Arnprior. For more information on the run or to register, call Jane Dowd at 613-623-9963 or register online at www.eventsonline.ca.

The physician recruitment committee has asked Arnprior council for up to $3,000 to find three new doctors to serve the catchment area. The money will be used to pay travel costs for potential candidates along with costs to attend a recruitment fair in Ottawa, it was learned at Tuesday’s regular meeting of council. A doctor is leaving in December and another coming, but younger doctors today are less likely to take on heavy patient loads and work long hours, which is why more of them are needed. “Because of growth and the unexpected departure of some physicians,” said John Carkner, chair of the Arnprior/McNabBraeside Physician Recruitment Committee, “now we find ourselves again with a need.” Because the catchment area includes the township, parts of West Carleton and Mississippi Mills, the committee will also approach other governments, companies and private individuals in a bid to raise $10,000 to see its work through to next year. Provincial funding is available after that. Arnprior’s lame duck council is allowed to spend up to $50,000 after the Oct. 25 election, but no councillors signaled they were

against handing the money over or at least suggesting the next council do so. All agreed the responsibility to attract physicians rests on the entire community, not just Arnprior District Memorial Hospital (ADMH). “The town needs to participate,” Mayor Terry Gibeau said. “We will be back to you before the end of the year.” Carkner said ADMH is willing to bridge the money until the dust settles after the election, but it doesn’t have a budget line for it. “We’d be glad to get the money whenever you can,” Carkner said, to much laughter. Aside from the need for physicians, Carkner said the community has done well to attract one of the highly coveted Family Health Teams in the province. And the area is also a new member of Health Force Ontario, a well-connected recruitment organization. Meanwhile, after hearing a presentation from Carkner and Arnprior District Memorial Hospital CAO Eric Hanna, McNabBraeside council agreed that it would likely pay a one-third share of the needed $10,000. However, council decided it should check with treasurer Connie Graham to see if the money is available and where it should come from before giving Coun. Jim McGregor’s motion final approval.

Pointing out that some municipalities are spending large sums to attract doctors, McNab-Braeside Coun. Jim McGregor recommended that the township should contribute both this year and next to the local campaign. He noted that Horton and Greater Madawaska both allotted $24,000 to the Renfrew-based recruitment effort this year, “and they are a lot smaller than we are.”

Up to whole community to recruit physicians, council agrees

A delegation at the Arnprior council meeting Monday took aim at the town’s new dog and cat bylaw. Bylaw officers went door-to-door from June to September asking who had dogs and cats. The process is based on the honour system, but dog lovers say cats get off easy because they aren’t likely to bark and run at the door when it rings. Linda and Herb Betts told council that four cats are allowed to run free across their property and that bylaw officers should do more to round them up. Dogs on the loose are not the problem, Linda said. When the couple caught one cat in a trap, they were told to hold it overnight until authorities could deal with it. They promptly let it out, not wanting it kept locked up for that long. Linda also takes exception with a one-time licensing fee for cats while an annual one applies to her dogs. “This one-time licensing fee – that’s really got my back up,” she said. Council reviews bylaws each January. Mayor Terry Gibeau said the Betts raised some good points that ought to be discussed at that time.

McNab-Braeside residents are gearing up for the Oct. 25 municipal election and a full house turned out last Wednesday evening to hear what the candidates have to say about local issues. Hosted by the Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce and moderated by Metroland Ottawa Region’s Jason Marshall, the all-candidates debate allowed for opening and closing statements from the two mayoral candidates, two candidates for deputy mayor (Coun. Andy Dunlop was absent following a spill before the meeting began) and five council hopefuls. Candidates then answered written questions from the audience. Organizers estimated about 175 people made up the crowd at McNab Public School Oct. 6. In the opening statement, incumbent Mayor Mary Campbell said the election is not about the individual candidates but the future of McNabBraeside. She said she has worked the past four years to strengthen the township and identified areas of focus, including a self-sustaining economy, the environment and in particular water, housing and economic development. Water, in particular, will be a key focus. “We’ve got to get on top of water issues. There is legislation coming down the pipe,” she said. Mayoral candidate Elmer Raycroft outlined a 27-year history of service to the municipality that included 17 years on the school board and 10 years on council, the last four as deputy mayor. Being conscious of the budget and spending has always been a priority, said Raycroft, reminding residents that from every tax dollar coming into the municipality, 40 cents goes to Renfrew County and another 30 cents to the school board. More development and attracting new residents will ensure the existing ratepayers don’t foot the bill for rising taxes needed for new infrastructure. “It’s difficult to maintain a low tax base,” said Raycroft. With the Highway 17 expansion, it’s “an ideal time to increase our residential development.” Deputy mayor candidate Christine Blimkie (Sauve) promised to keep an open mind and be approachable. She said she will make clear, concise decisions based on fact and has long been a supporter of the community. “I will support the community and its residents and the volunteer base,” she said. GACC representative Mike Marcil read Coun. Andy Dunlop’s prepared opening statement. In it, Dunlop, a four-year member of council, said

Dunlop doing just fine McNab-Braeside Coun. Andy Dunlop is reportedly doing just fine after an episode that caused him to miss last week’s all candidates debate. The deputy mayor candidate collapsed just before the Oct. 6 meeting at McNab Public School and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Dunlop, who is currently undergoing treatment for a vascular ulcer on his ankle, was released later that evening and is back on the campaign trail. Officials say Dunlop may have contracted an infection while receiving his treatment. Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce representative Mike Marcil read Dunlop’s prepared statement. his door is always open and pledged to be accessible, fiscally responsible and honest. Dunlop’s goals include addressing an insufficient tax base, moving forward with land and property development, developing sustainable plans to address environmental needs, and attracting new business to the industrial area. Council candidate Robert Campbell said his main focus is to keep taxes down and ensure careful spending. Seniors in particular are feeling financial pressures and need the municipality to hold the line. He suggested working closely with Arnprior and Renfrew to attract jobs and industry. “I just feel taxes are too high. We need to be careful where we do spend the dollars,” he said. Council candidate Moira Hutchison, a holistic healer with a corporate background, said she has grown to love the area and she looks forward to learning more about the issues. Having gained local knowledge through her work with the McNab-Braeside Business Association, she promised to look at all sides of an issue before making any decisions. “I’m running for council because I care,” said Hutchison. Coun. Brad McIlquham, a four-year council veteran, would like to return to his seat to continue to work for the good of the township. The recreation, protective services and fire committees have all been challenging, said the 17-year Russell Foods salesman. McIlquham said he’d like to work towards further development in the township and development of the Braeside Beach. She also urges anyone with questions to call the municipal office or attend one of the voter help centre days, when township staff will be on hand to assist anyone with qualms about the process. The help centres will run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20; Saturday, Oct. 23; and Monday, Oct. 25. “The staff will be more than happy to help,” Mellema said. The knocking down of election signs is a slap in the face to Canadian veterans who risked their lives for freedom, says Arnprior councillor candidate Doug Munro. “Our vets fought for democracy ... that’s what this country is all about,” said Munro. “It’s really disappointing to have people disrespect that.” He said he’s seen signs knocked down, damaged and stolen in various parts of town. He suggests that for the most part the culprits are not likely kids because certain candidates’ signs have been targeted. Residents in Braeside have also complained about signs being damaged in their area. One woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she replaced a number of signs for a candidate only to have them stolen again. EDITORIAL

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Hunters, beware highway traffic, ATVs

Get out to vote this election

With hunting season beginning in earnest soon, it’s time for the usual gun safety appeals. Fortunately, the number of accidental shooting incidents has been significantly reduced in recent years. Hats off to the those offering the effective hunter safety courses. They’re doing their jobs well. And cheers to the new generation of hunter, many of whom are more aware of safety and environmental concerns than their predecessors. However, there is a new danger for hunters – vehicles. In the last week, a hunter has been killed on Highway 17 and another died in an ATV rollover near Kirkland Lake. The American hunter and a Horton man were killed in a head-on collision on Highway 17 near Haley Station Oct. 7. Walter Spicer, 69, of Delaware and Frank Hendrickson, 38, of Horton were killed and Mary Spicer, 68, was seriously injured. Police believe alcohol played a role in the crash. Another collision on the same stretch of highway claimed the life of a Deep River teenager Sunday. Meanwhile, officers from the Kirkland Lake OPP detachment are investigating the ATV crash that killed Clinton Gauthier, 53, of Horton Sunday. It appears that guns are no longer the biggest threat to hunter safety.

Good grub, let’s eat Two of Arnprior’s most anticipated dinners of the year will be held in the next week at the St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall. The church’s harvest festival and church supper is set for this Sunday, Oct. 17. The fun and food (roast beef dinner) runs from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Two days later (Tuesday, Oct. 19), the Arnprior and District Breast Cancer Support Group’s renowned buffet roast beef and turkey dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Following in the footsteps of the Thanksgiving feasts, it’s more proof that October, the harvest month, is the best time of the year for fans of good basic country fare. Enjoy.

To the editor: Folks, get out and vote this municipal election. It has everything; a bunch public-spirited citizens from various walks of life offering to run our town to the best of their ability. And make no mistake, we must choose carefully, as they are dealing with increasing large financial decisions, plus the future shape of our great town. Plus, let’s be honest, if who we voted for gets in, we can say, “Hey, I voted for you! What about that pothole!” And if who we voted for doesn’t make it and the winning person makes a boo-boo, we can say, “Ha, my guy (or gal) would have done better.” Please though, vote, it’s important.

Warn drivers, not pedestrians To the editor: Regarding OPP report in last week’s paper (Chronicle-Guide, Oct. 7): After reporting several pedestrian-car accidents where the drivers were charged with “failing to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian,” the article then stated: “it is an offence for pedestrians to cross the roadway or enter into an intersection when it is not safe to do so.” (I wonder why there was no mention instead of drivers not looking where they are going, or of always being in an almighty hurry). Really! - Would a pedestrian knowingly walk into a dangerous traffic situation unless he/ she was suicidal. Can the OPP explain to pedestrians how they are to know if a vehicle operator is checking all directions, or if the driver plans to stop or barrel through? All walkers must now have psychic abilities? And the elderly and children - are they also expected to analyze every driver’s intentions and reactions, from the middle of an intersection, then run when the driver decides not to stop? The rule of the road is this:

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Established in 1879

Once a pedestrian steps off the curb on a WALK signal, he/she has the right-of-way. The onus is on drivers to stop and wait, not on a pedestrian to stop and guess what the vehicles around him might do. Any MTO driving examiner can automatically FAIL a new driver for not stopping for a pedestrian with one foot on the crosswalk who has the WALK signal. Many Arnprior drivers need to learn about looking in all directions before proceeding (especially on left turns). Many should purchase a Driver’s Handbook or borrow one from a 16-year-old. And, incidentally, in all my close calls with vehicles in crosswalks, not one driver was a teenager! I agree - if you’re jaywalking, all bets are off if you are careless. But signal lights at intersections were invented and designed to guide people across safely and to ensure vehicle operators follow the rules. Instead of the police reminding pedestrians about safety, they need to remind the drivers. They are the ones with the two-ton weapons.

Charge pedestrians too To the editor: In response to the article in the paper last week (Arnprior Chronicle-Guide, Oct. 7). What ever happened to Elmer The Safety Elephant? When I was growing up, we were taught to stop, look and listen before crossing the street. As a driver myself, I have seen pedestrians walk across the road without looking to see if any cars were coming. The pedestrians should start to get charged for not looking. I agree the drivers should be diligent when driving, but at the same time pedestrians should also be diligent when crossing the road. Not only at corners, but in the middle of the road. As a driver, I have had pedestrians walk out in front of my car as they were reading the paper or texting or on their cell phone, and don’t even bother to look for cars. I can’t understand why only drivers are being charged, when pedestrians just walk out in front of moving autos, without looking. I believe the pedestrians should be charged for not yielding to traffic. The law should work both ways, not just one way. The jay-walking fines should be back in full force. A concerned citizen for driver’s and pedestrian’s safety.

To the editor: I am writing now to support Eric Burton. I think he is the best choice for Arnprior Reeve. I am a fairly recent permanent resident of Arnprior, but I have been spending time here for several years and my wife Alison’s family, the Macnamaras, go back to the 1880s. So I am familiar with some of the difficulties Arnprior faces. I am also familiar with municipal issues. Before retirement in 2001, I covered city politics for the Toronto Star as an editorial writer and city columnist. During the controversy over the proposed Wal-Mart mall, I was very impressed by the way Eric Burton spoke up and stood his ground against the council Old Guard. At times they would not even accord him the courtesy of seconding his motions so they could at least be voted on for the record. I also appreciate Burton’s balanced approach to taxes and financing.

Debt servicing for capital projects does not appear to be absorbing an exorbitant share of the property tax levy and all Arnprior’s borrowings are within provincial guidelines. Burton’s measured, pay-as-you-go approach, is a good way to deal with future projects that will be needed to keep the town moving ahead. His work to improve the waterfront and the marina will help to balance the center of the town against the highway commercial development what will inevitably spring up at the juncture of Daniel St. and Highway 17. I think Eric Burton understands what has to be done to preserve the way of life we all value in Arnprior and the energy to do the things that will be needed to preserve our future. He will be the kind of reeve Arnprior needs. David Lewis Stein Arnprior

To the editor: Having attended a number of McNab-Braeside council meetings, I have observed how government should not function. Councillors appear to be almost apathetic in their responsibility toward the folks they represent. When confronted with tough problems, that are worrisome to their constituents, they spin their wheels, likely in the hope that things will just go away. Our current councillors don’t exert much influence, being cowed by a council member full of bluster and bombast. Research has shown that he has done little by way of response to requirements for studies, plans, submissions and drafts. His modus operandi is to rail and vent. The only shining star in the

Pain rears its ugly head anytime it wants, all throughout our lives, and all over our bodies. It is a recent sports injury and chronic headaches. It is constipation or diarrhea. It is aching ears and throats. It is arthritis, anxiety or depression. It is Fibromyalgia. Regardless of how it takes form, it always leaves us desperate for relief, de-railed from our lives, and holed-up in one or two positions of comfort, wondering why, and what to do. When we go to our doctors, we learn how pain has many possible causes: poor assimilation of nutrients, degenerative joints, muscular tears, improper healing, or compromised immune function. In Homeopathy, we solve these root causes of pain by using the symptoms of the pain itself to choose the best medicine. Is the pain burning, sticking, aching, stabbing, accompanied by food cravings or felt only in the morning? A Homeopath’s task is to read the map that pain is drawing,

choose the perfect Homeopathic medicine, and determine an individualised treatment plan. The beauty of Homeopathy is that it is not masking your pain symptoms and trading them for side effects, as does a pharmaceutical pain-killer. In fact, it is incorrect to believe it is the Homeopathic remedy that is curing the pain you feel. What actually happens is that the Homeopathic medicine stimulates the Body to do what it is designed to do: heal itself. Homeopathy is a medical methodology that acknowledges the incredible power of the Body to create its own cure, thus healing itself from the inside. Empower yourself. Your Body is an amazing gift, the most powerful Healer you know, and you live right inside it. It was born to be the driver on your journey to Health; Homeopathic Medicine is the key.

Arnprior reeve candidate welcome to join doctor committee There is also a promotional video link that extols the benefits of living and practicing medicine in Arnprior. In the past three years, we have attracted six new physicians (specialists and family physicians) to practice in Arnprior, and we are in the final arrangements for a new family physician to start practice in December. We continue to extend a welcome to any physicians of whom we are aware, and the recent resurgence of a need for family physicians (perhaps attributable to the unanticipated departure of some physicians and growth of our community), has re-energized our recruitment

In fact, I understand that has been the town’s policy for some time now. These may seem to be small things, but I believe it is important that the people who wish to represent us and make decisions on our behalf have the facts right whether the issue is large or small.

To the editor: As volunteer chair of the ArnpriorMcNab-Braeside Physician Recruitment Committee, I want to address the concerns expressed by Dr. Alex Winter in the advertisement of his candidacy for Reeve of Arnprior, regarding failure of anyone to contact him about his interest in practicing locally. The ADMH website has had a link for physician recruitment since 2005. Any physician who wishes to practice in Arnprior can find information clearly listed under ‘Recruitment – Physicians’, and one phone call will initiate the recruitment process.

found in Montreal and Southern Ontario. An outlet mall will differentiate Arnprior from its neighbours, while complementing the downtown. It will draw hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, stimulating the local tourism industry and putting Arnprior on the map. It will employ hundreds of residents in need of good jobs. It will provide a huge increase in property taxes to help ease the burden on small business and residents, making Arnprior a more affordable place to live and do business. All this, while providing local residents quality shopping selection at discount prices. This man is always looking forward to tomorrow and has proven he can get things done at the council table. His vision for Arnprior has a bright and prosperous future.

To the editor: An open letter to Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MP Cheryl Gallant. As a householder and constituent of your riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, I just received a flyer in the mail from your office that I find absolutely insulting. The issue in question is the long form census - whether or not it should be voluntary. My feeling is that census information is critical to running a country and it is a civic duty to fill out the long form when requested. All civilized countries have such a system. The language you used to phrase your question, however, was ignorant, mis-

leading and inflammatory. I will quote here for the benefit of the opposition members who may not have seen your mailing: “Our Conservative Government has made the long term census voluntary. The Liberal/Socialist/Separatist Coalition want you to go to jail for not answering.” I find it hard to believe that even the Prime Minister’s office would sanction such insulting language. It is your duty to represent your constituents in parliament, and I respectfully request that in future you refrain from using such tactics. Sherry Sadler, Jean-Pierre Thonney Arnprior 419314

To the editor: This past Friday night, I enjoyed a community spaghetti dinner hosted by Reeve candidate Eric Burton. The food was delicious and it was great to have the opportunity to chat with him and meet his young family. Over the course of the evening, we discussed the future of industry and retail in Arnprior. Of all the candidates in this election, this man is looking forward to tomorrow and sees the big picture. We talked about creating a Downtown Waterfront District to weave together the natural beauty of our beaches and trails to the commercial districts in order to revitalize downtown and bring new dollars into the heart of the community. But we also brainstormed about drawing shoppers from Ottawa and all over Eastern Ontario by establishing an Outlet Mall, the likes of which can only be

Editorial’s waiter comment uncalled for To the editor: The Oct. 7 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide editorial read: “Too bad he (Doug Smith) insists on dressing like a waiter.” Such a statement is at best a cheap shot; some would describe it as an ad hominem attack. I recall that Mr. Smith, like the other candidates, dressed smartly and appropriately for the debate. In any case, I listened to what he and the other candidates had to say and I will cast my votes based on considerations

more substantial than sartorial tastes. Perhaps the Chronicle-Guide’s editorials could focus on the real issues, of which there is no shortage, instead of improvising an uneven “body language” analysis? Unless the Chronicle-Guide editors provide a valid explanation of why their statement is not denigrating, it seems that an apology to Mr. Smith is in order Dominik Gaillardetz Arnprior

Here’s to old-fashioned values To the editor: I think this slate of candidates for McNab-Braeside Council has some pretty interesting choices – and some real oldfashioned values. Qualities we are all looking for in our political leaders are honesty and integrity. Bob Campbell has those qualities in spades. He says it like it is. There is no guile in his nature; you know when you talk to him he won’t try to pull the wool over your eyes. He may not be a slick talker, but you know he means what he says, and you can depend on that. This is his community; he was born and raised here. Worked here all his life and knows the old-fashioned value of hard work. I just can’t see Bob shirking his responsibility. For example, can you imagine Bob cancelling regular council meetings when there was work to be done, then spending taxpayers’ money to organize “special” ones when deadlines loomed? That’s what some councillors on the

last council did. Bob has just too much common sense to vote himself a holiday when the work was piling up. There’s a story I just have to tell you about Bob; happened quite a few years back, but I never forgot it. Called him over to help load some pigs on a truck for market, ’cause you could always depend on Bob to help. Well, we coaxed most of them up the ramp and onto that truck one way or another. But that last one was just as stubborn as any pig can be – and if you are a farmer, you know just what I am talking about. Well, finally Bobby just lost his patience with that pig and he picked that sucker up, all 250 pounds of him and lifted him up onto that truck. Hey, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. And I gotta vote for Bob Campbell and that’s a fact. N.I. Callen Braeside

A.J. CHARBONNEAU STUDENTS SHOW THAT ‘TERRY FOX IS IN OUR HEARTS’

13 October 14 2010 - ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE

A.J. Charbonneau students walked and ran around the school yard Oct. 4 in their annual Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research. The run was preceded by a touching assembly that included a Terry Fox video, a minute of silence for cancer victims and heartfelt explanations by nine students why they were participating. The students all have deeply personal reasons, mostly a loss of a family member, for wanting to see a cure for cancer. At left, the nine speakers, from left, are Jazmyn Nicholas, Kayla Cloutier, Olivia MacIntyre, Brennan Ring, Paul Dykens, Cassandra Toner, Gillian Murray, Gavin Toole and Kaitlyn Wagner. Sports Second-half comebacks give Redmen Turkey Bowl sweep EVAN CAMPBELL evan.campbell@metroland.com

Both Arnprior District High School football teams came back from firsthalf deficits to sweep Sunday’s turkey bowl with RCI on their home field. Things looked bleak for the Senior Redmen, as they were down 21-7 after the third quarter in their Lanark-Renfrew High School Football League. showdown with arch-rival RCI Raiders from Renfrew. But they rebounded to win 22-21 in a thrilling finish. After scoring early in the fourth quarter, ADHS pulled to within 21-20 with a last-play touchdown. Kicker Jesse Andrews, whose rushing prowess was also key to the Arnprior victory, lined up to kick a convert to tie the game. His first attempt was blocked, but there was a penalty flag thrown on the play. In the second attempt, the ball squirted away, but quarterback Adam Rueckwald recovered and lateralled it to Andrews, who scampered in to the end zone for the two-convert and

the win. The win boosts the Senior Redmen’s record to 3-1. ADHS is third in the league, one point behind RCI, which has played one more game, and unbeaten Smiths Falls. In the Junior game, the Redmen were down 7-6 after the first half, but roared back for a 22-14 win. Renfrew made it seem closer than it was by scoring a touchdown with only 30 seconds left. Juniors quarterback Yaejar Prot scored three touchdowns to lead ADHS. He actually scored a fourth touchdown, but it was called back on a clipping call. Kicker Jacob Plunkett added the converts. The Juniors improved their record to 3-0 and are tied with St. John’s of Perth atop the league. The Redmen face another stern test today (Thursday) when they host Almonte in a doubleheader, with the Juniors playing at 1 p.m. and the Seniors at 3 p.m. Both Almonte teams are undefeated, with the Seniors having won two and tied one and the Juniors winning two straight. ADHS sports teams on a roll The ADHS junior girls basketball team ran its record to 5-0 with two lopsided wins last week. The Redmen invaded Pembroke Oct. 5 and came away with a 52-17 victory over Bishop Smith Crusaders. Alexis Lough led Arnprior with 12 points. The Senior Redman were almost as dominating, being Bishop Smith 47-17 as Terry Lyn Herrick netted 13 points. On Oct. 7, the Redmen hosted St. Joseph’s Jaguars. The Juniors ran roughshod over the visitors in a 43-15 win.

Coach Joe Lavoie said both Tasha Zoryk and Dana Lascelle played very well on both ends of the floor. However, in a thrilling battle, the Senior Redmen were nipped 38-37 by St. Joe’s when Natalie Walters sunk her second threepointer in the last minute. Herrick led ADHS with 12 points. It was the Seniors first loss, while St. Joe’s stays undefeated. In boys volleyball, the Junior Redman ran their record to 2-0 with a 3-1 win over Opengo Wildcats, while the Seniors lost 3-1 to Opeongo.

Packers down defending champs, top Timberwolves PETER CLARK peter.clark@metroland.com

One way to climb up the ladder of respect in a hurry is to saddle a convincing defeat on the defending league champions. The Arnprior Packers did that, and then some, in a 6-0 whitewashing of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League crown-holding Ottawa Junior Canadians Friday night at Nick’s place. The Packers then followed up with a 5-3 stopping of the Renfrew Timberwolves Sunday evening in a battle of Valley Division rivals. PACKERS 6 OTTAWA 0 Taylor Collins is fending off the so-called sophomore jinx quite nicely. The Packers sniper paved the way with a three-goal performance against the Canadians Friday night, and coupled with two more markers Sunday, now has nine already for the 2010-11 season. The win was especially gratifying for netminder German Tsatsura, who blanked his former teammates on 33 shots, including 14 saves with the game still up for grabs in the second period. The Packers built up a 4-0 lead before Collins’s second goal provided some insurance midway through the third period after the Wolves had cut Arnprior’s lead in half. Tsatsura backstopped the Packers second triumph of the Thanksgiving Day weekend with 28 saves. Arnprior shooters tested Renfrew’s Mike Rosebrook 30 times. “We played our best hockey of the year on Friday night, and I think we played our worst on Sunday night,” Packers coach and general manager Bill Griese observed, “but I think if you asked (Renfrew coach) Cal Smith, He’d probably say the same. It was an uninspired game. We were missing guys and so were they, but hey, if you can play that poorly and get two points, I’ll take ‘em.” The Packers had a rematch with Ottawa at the Brian Kilrea (Canterbury) Arena Tuesday evening, and the coach said Ottawa will be ready. “No doubt, we’ll see a different Ottawa team. We have to be ready,” Griese said. Then it’s back home for another two-game weekend. The Stittsville Royals provide the opposition at 8 p.m. Friday at the Nick Smith Centre. On Sunday, the Gatineau Mustangs pay their lone visit of the 2010-11 season to the Nick Smith Centre at 7 p.m.

NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING gets read. gets remembered. gets results

With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

Get WITH It! starts Oct. 26 Get out your walking shoes Arnprior. The indoor walking program that took the town by storm last winter is back. On Tuesday, Oct. 26, the halls of Arnprior District High School will ring again with tunes to get residents on their feet and walking for their health. The Get WITH (Walking In The Halls) It! program will run again Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. It is a HeartWise Exercise program in a safe place for patients with a cardiac diagnosis, where they can maintain an exercise routine while knowing that a defibrillator machine and volunteers trained in CPR are on site. Walking is great exercise for many health problems, including diabetes, arthritis, weight issues, high blood pressure and others. So take your first steps towards better health, say organizers. Registration for returning and new walkers gets underway at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 26 in the ADHS cafeteria. Walkers will be asked to review their health status using the ParQ health screening tool, and check with their doc-

tor if they have any concerns. They will be asked to sign a waiver form, and then will be cleared to sign in and begin walking. While registering, participants will have the opportunity to watch the HeartWise Exercise promotional video, which showcases the program and community. Pedometers will be available on loan, as well as stepping logs for those who want to track their progress. All walkers start out on the mild level for a warm-up, and then can move on up the stairs to moderate and intense routes using multiple stairs and the long (1/4 mile) halls of ADHS. New registrants can sign up for free Tshirts, which will be distributed at a later session to avoid congestion. Returning walkers are asked to wear the T-shirts that they received last season. The organizing committee wants to maintain the Get WITH It! as a low-cost, barrier-free program, and depends on local donations to cover the expenses. For more information, call the Nick Smith Centre at 613-623-7301.

University info night Monday at St. Joe’s Area students and their families will have a unique opportunity this Monday, Oct. 18 to evaluate the province’s universities. St. Joseph’s High School in Renfrew is hosting a university information night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Universities organize

presentations at high school, but it’s rare to have all Ontario universities making presentations in one meeting, as will happen Oct. 18, said St. Joe’s vice-principal Brennan Trainor. The event will be particularly valuable to those

students planning on attending university in September, 2011. Trainor said students from both the Catholic and public school systems are welcome, as well as those from private schools and youth being homeschooled.

Come check us out and see what we can do for you.

Over 50? Book a mammogram The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) is marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) by inviting all women over the age of 50 to book a mammogram as a preventative measure in the fight against breast cancer. The invitation also recognizes that this is the 20th anniversary the OBSP has partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society to distribute Thingamaboobs to all clients while supplies last. The thingamabobs demon-

While not every lump is cancerous, your chances of getting breast cancer increase once you’re 50. The OBSP is located at the Arnprior District Memorial Hospital in the diagnostic imaging department. All breast screening technicians are female and the average appointment takes

Halloween is almost here. What better way to get a head start on trick-or-treating than a trip to Saunders Farm? There is a haunted house, mazes, a haunted hayride and other activities. We will be going Friday, Oct. 22. The bus leaves the Nick Smith Centre at 5 p.m. and returns at 10 p.m. The cost for the bus trip and ticket is $25. Registrations must be in by Monday, Oct. 18. Come and join us for a scary good time. Ages 10 and over are welcome. Because of our grant with the Ministry of Health Promotion, we get the bus for free, so take advantage of our free busing and discounted rates. We don’t go through the farm as a group, so bring some friends. CURLING Parks and Rec youth programs has teamed up with the Arnprior Curling Club to offer a Learn to … Little Rocks Curling Tuesday, Nov. 2. Come on out and give this fun sport a try. All youth in grades 4 to 6 are welcome and there is no charge. Register at the Nick Smith Centre by Tuesday, Oct. 26. The fun starts at 4 p.m. at the Arnprior Curling Club. Note that this is a one-night Learn To … program and if interested youth may then register with the Little Rocks curling. Our very popular dodgeball

program starts Monday, Oct. 18 and runs most Mondays from 6-7 p.m. It is best to call the Nick Smith Centre ahead of time in case the hall is booked for other programs. Dodgeball is a free drop-in program open to ages 9-16. On Friday, Nov. 5, we are offering a Red Cross Certified Babysitter’s course for youth aged 11 and up. The course runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch will be provided. The cost is $45. Registrations are due by Friday, Oct. 29. This program teaches skills needed for babysitting and staying home alone. Kayla and Don will be visiting the Grade 5 and Grade 9 classes in the next two weeks to hand out the Community Access Passes. These passes encourage youth to get active by allowing free access to activities such as public swimming and skating, as well as discounts on selected programs and at local sports stores. The program is made possible by a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport. A schedule of free programs and discounts will be included in a brochure distributed with the passes. On Tuesday, Oct. 19, Grade 9 and 10 students at Arnprior District High School will have the opportunity to meet the Esteem Team. Prepare to be motivated! The Esteem Team is a national goal-setting initiative which strives to inspire young people to follow their dreams, to provide them with tools for success

and to activate them for life. Mark Hatfield, a former professional football player, will be delivering the interactive program. It should make for an interesting day for the students. Our fall and winter program flyer has gone home with all students in grades 4-8 and is being

marketed in the high school. If you didn’t receive your program flyer, stop in at the Nick Smith Centre for a copy. Registration for all of these programs is now open and must be done in person with cash or cheque at the Nick Smith Centre a minimum of one week in advance.

If you have any questions about our programs, call the Nick Smith Centre at 613-6237301 or email Kayla or Don at kreinert@arnprior.ca. Or see us at the Arnprior Community Policing Community Awareness Day at the Arnprior Shopping Centre from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct 16.

The rail freight service review recommends ways to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and reliability of the rail supply chain. The panel will consider stakeholders’ feedback on the interim report for a period of one month. A number of stakeholders raised issues related to branch lines. Key issues raised include: • inadequate track maintenance; • need to upgrade track to main-line standards so that cars can be fully loaded; • line abandonment; • demarketing of some lines without putting them up for sale or transfer under the CTA provisions; • unreasonable financial and other sale/transfer conditions set by the main-line carriers that discourage the sale of lines to

In her October column, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant defends the government’s hotly debated multimillion dollar plans to purchase new fighter jets and congratulates Haley Industries for being involved in the program. She slams the “Opposition-separatistsocialist coalition for trying “to thwart our government’s efforts to provide the very best in military equipment for our men and women in uniform. For the full column, see the website yourottawaregion.com.

The plant invasion is now on

This time of year is nothing short of invigorating. Flocks of geese liven the sky and hardwood leaves paint the landscape brilliant hues. The air is cooler and rich with oxygen. This is especially evident at night as myriad stars blaze their distant presence in the dark. A major invasion is also underway. On the sun-drenched days following the heavy rains of last week, the first wave of invaders arrived. If you were passing by an old field, you might have witnessed the spectacle of thousands of parachutes powered by strong winds filling the air. But they were not foreign troops attempting to take over our province. They were milkweeds on the move. While, it might seem strange to think of plants as moving, just as we send out our children into the world when they come of age, plants send off their seeds to new destinations.

closed until the sun promises the return of the plant’s taxis. Now, before you start ascribing animal intelligence to Queen-Anne’s-Lace, be aware that it is humidity that causes the basket to close (its arms swell differentially and curl) and a lack of humidity that straightens them out again! Some plants use both wind and animals for seed dispersal. The common lawn “weed” Plantain has tiny seeds that are spread by the wind on dry days. But when it rains the seeds become covered by glue that binds them to wet hair, feathers, or even leaves.

Our local plants show great ingenuity when it comes to sending off their seeds to new locations. Perhaps you recently took a stroll and unwillingly took part in some plant’s clever scheme. If not, there is still plenty of time to play taxi! The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

Some, like the milkweed, use air transport. But instead of buying tickets, these clever plants dress their “kids” for the occasion. Lightweight bodies adorned with silk parachutes allow seeds to travel anywhere from a dozens of metres to several kilometres. Dandelions and many other sun-loving plants use the same travel plan. Some plants use ground transport. Bidens (alias Beggarsticks. alias Sticktights) adorn their seeds with curved teeth that grab onto anything wearing hair, feathers, or cotton/polyester. These seeds travel for considerable distances until the carrier becomes aware of their presence and dislodges them, or they lose their grip and fall by the wayside. Either way they successfully make the journey to a new location. Undoubtedly the most famous plant to use this mode of transport is Burdock. Burdock seeds have wonderful hooked barbs that inspired Swiss electrical engineer George de Mestral to invent Velcro. Queen-Anne’s-Lace also uses animal transport but the couriers are not always available. On wet days, animals are less likely to be active, plus the seeds do not catch very well, so the mother plant has a clever plan. On those days, she closes up the beautiful basket-like structure, once the flower head and now the seed holder. This stays

At this point, no county councillor has filed nomination papers for warden. The new municipal term begins Dec. 1, with most elected officials sworn within that first week. The new county council will have at least four new faces. Those would be the successors for Deep River Mayor Ann Aikens, Laurentian Hills Mayor Vance Gutzman, Horton Mayor Bob Johnson and Madawaska Valley Mayor John Hildebrandt. Five acclaimed heads of council will return for sure, namely Bob Sweet of Petawawa, Norm Lentz of Brudenell, Lyndoch & Raglan, Janice Visneskie of Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards, Tammy-Lea Stewart of Head, Clara & Maria, and Harold Weckworth of North Algona Wilberforce. Seven other county councillors must be re-elected, to return to county council, among them Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack, McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell, Renfrew Reeve Audrey Green, Greater Madawaska Reeve Peter Emon and Admaston-Bromley Mayor Raye-Anne Briscoe.

Bonnechere Valley Mayor Zig Mintha is the first county councillor to express interest in being the next warden of Renfrew County. He put his name forward at the very end of county council’s monthly meeting Sept. 30. The current warden, Don Rathwell, indicated he would support Mintha’s candidacy. First, however, Mintha has to win the three-person race in his own municipality that includes Kip Smith and Jennifer Murphy. “I have to win the election (Oct. 25). If I’m successful my name will stand (as a candidate) for warden,” said Mintha, 68, of Eganville. “It’s not over yet. Harvest dance to raise funds for church hall The congregation at St. George’s Anglican Church in Fitzroy harbour is committed to removing barriers that block comfortable and safe access to the church and hall. To further that goal, they are holding a fundraising dance this Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Fitzroy Community Centre. The church has been wheelchair and walker accessible for many years. A recent addition in the church is an open area at the back, which is small-child friendly with foam flooring, small table and chairs and soft toys and books. This frees the very young children and their parents from cramped space in the pews. The focus now is to make the church hall and washroom accessible to those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility. The short flight of stairs and the narrow washroom are considerable barriers to those who attend regular services, as well as weddings, funerals, AA and community events. A Barrier-Free Access Fund has been established and the hope is that work can begin next year. To add to this fund, St. George’s is sponsoring The Harvest in the Harbour Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight at the community centre on Clifford Campbell Street. The music will be provided by the popular family band from Carleton Place, The Bowes Broth-
