County approves good-news budget STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Renfrew County councillors and staff congratulated themselves on a good-news budget. But who could blame them? With just a few financial figures to finalize, the county’s 2011 budget has a tax levy of slightly less than 0.5 per cent. When real growth (1.6 per cent) and property assessment values (that averaged a 6.4 per cent increase) are factored in, the actual tax rate becomes miniscule. The levy (or total amount of taxation) is rising by only $170,000 in 2011, for a total of about $34 million. The amount of taxation for residential property owners is the smallest in 10 years. If one’s property assessment

value remained the same in 2011, the owner’s county portion of taxes on a house valued at $100,000 would drop $29.45 to $383.91. If the property rose the average assessment value of 6.4 per cent, the owner’s county portion of the tax bill would increase by $4.88. The budget was examined during a two-day workshop, chaired by finance and administration committee chair and Mayor Raye-Anne Briscoe of Admaston-Bromley, at Renfrew County headquarters Feb. 22 and 24. Each property tax bill − which contains county, education and lower-municipality portions − is billed by the lower-tier municipality as one lump sum. See COUNTY Page 2

WORKING OVERTIME

The Packers dug deep to come up big against Almonte in Junior B action last week. But if the last game is the only one that counts, The Packers have some work ahead of themselves. 14

It’s taken six intense weeks of detailed work, solid support from local industry and business and a ton of ingenuity, but a team of Arnprior District High School students is just about ready to unveil the fruits of its technological labours. Meet STEVE, which stands

for symbolic tube electronic vertical enabler, a robotic arm the team will bring to the regional First Robotics competition at the end of March. It’s a big first not only for ADHS, says science teacher Peter Cudmore, but for the board. “It’s the first time a school in the entire board has even done it,” he says. See SPONSORS Page 10

Community loses ‘warm-hearted’ volunteer SHERRY HAAIMA Sherry.haaima@metroland.com

The community, and members of the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital auxiliary in particular, is mourning the loss of one of their own. Marilyn Werry, president of the auxiliary from 2007-2009, died on Feb. 24 at the age of 71 following a courageous battle with cancer. The Sand Point resident was also an active community volunteer with a number of organizations besides the auxiliary, including the Arnprior and District Breast Cancer Support Group, the local red hat group and others. Marilyn was always on the go, enjoying her games with the Bridge Broads and her time as a member of the Doch-

art Book Club. Her friends and fellow volunteers remember her as warm-hearted with a great sense of humour. Auxiliary president Bernice O’Connor said she’ll miss working with Marilyn. “She was a very bubbly person,” said O’Connor. “She was really nice and she did a good job.” A highlight of Marilyn’s auxiliary career was the presentation of a provincial life membership in January of this year, said O’Connor. Though she continued to battle through liver and pancreatic cancer, Marilyn was able to attend the presentation, something that meant a lot to her. Even as she battled the disease, Marilyn remained optimistic, say friends.

“She always kept a cheerful attitude – her spirit never broke,” said O’Connor. “We will miss her not only as an auxilian but as a friend.” McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell delivered Marilyn’s eulogy Monday, and expressed her sadness at the loss. “The township will miss her,” said Campbell at Tuesday evening’s council meeting. A wake and funeral was held Feb. 28 at Pilon Funeral Home in Arnprior. Marilyn is survived by her husband Dr. Robert Werry, two sons Jerome Lemon (Nancy) and Jeffrey Lemon (Deb); two stepdaughters Tricia Werry (Darryl Waddell) and Ellen Werry (late Freddy Castro), five grandchildren and sisters Georgia Veysey and Janett Kieley.

County approves good-news budget From front page The lengthiest debate on the opening day of the two-day budget workshop was if the county should provide a 1.6 per cent real-growth increase to the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association arm of economic development. The suggestion came from McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell. During the mid-day break, staff left to determine how much the county provides to OVTA in services-in-kind, over and above its annual funding of $170,541. A quick estimate determined total services and financing to be $266,000. County council then agreed to table the item to the next meeting of the operations committee. However, on day two of the workshop it was agreed to defer the matter to the 2012 budget. Other small additions and subtractions to the budget left the final tax levy of the draft budget virtually the same, just below 0.5 per cent. One approval was an annual increase from $2,000 to $2,500 per county councillor to attend conferences. Treasurer Jim Kutschke indicated the cost per conference per county councillor was $3,000 to $3,500 when factoring in registration, gas mileage, accommodation and meeting per diems. Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards Mayor Janice Visneskie asked for the increase. Her motion was passed unanimously, meaning county councillors will now pay for any conference expenses above $2,500. Two recommended expenses were eliminated, both at the request of Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack. They were $10,000 for an electronic voting system in council chambers and $30,000 to replace the carpet in council chambers that hasn’t been replaced for nearly two decades. The carpet replacement cost would have been taken from reserves and not affected the final tax levy. The electronic voting system was rejected after council unanimously agreed that recorded votes can continue to be reliably recorded by a show of hands. STAFFING DISCUSSIONS All recommended staffing additions were approved, but the new full-time job of tenant relations coordinator for the social services department was only approved after extensive discussion. Campbell sought approval of a oneyear contract position so Renfrew County might pursue provincial funding if the new job proves valuable.

Only four of 16 county councillors (one was absent) supported that motion. Support for a new full-time position passed despite opposition by six county councillors. The new position could be filled by late March, said social services director David Anderson. The new employee will have a handful of duties, but a primary one will be liaison with tenants at risk. This includes the ongoing issue of unpaid rent by many tenants using Renfrew County Housing Corporation’s 978 housing units. Arguing for a full-time position, Greater Madawaska Mayor Peter Emon said the “best way to build up trust (with tenants) is to see them on a regular basis, and this position would facilitate this interaction. I think it’s a very necessary position.” To which Horton county councillor Don Eady added: “If there’s a need for a person right now, there’s going to be a need for a person in a year.” “I’m pleased with the outcome,” said Anderson after the unanimous vote for a full-time tenant relations coordinator, whose salary will be about $43,000. “Our rent is geared to income and our tenants have a lot of pressure on them. We’re dealing with the working poor,” said Anderson.

Marilyn Werry receives her provincial life membership pin from the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario in January. The honour meant a lot to the active community volunteer, say friends.

NEW FORESTER County council also approved the hiring of a new forester to help with sustainable forestry management and revenue generation. The county hopes this is a revenueneutral move, after the county’s logging revenue increased by about $60,000 last year. The forester’s salary will be between $50,980 and $59,976. Other new positions approved by county council that require total county dollars include two summer students (one at Renfrew County Place and one at the Renfrew County administration building respectively); and an engineering technician for public works that was first approved in 2009. Public works director Dave Darch says the employee will work to help acquire a minimum of 125 properties to advance county construction plans for 2011 and 2012. With the budget workshop over, Warden Bob Sweet expressed satisfaction with the result. “It’s a very responsible budget. These have been difficult times, but that was recognized by staff and the elected officials.

Committee agrees to send letter ending water rescue service DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

A letter will be sent to inform seven neighbouring municipalities that Arnprior will no longer provide water/ice rescue services after 90 days, if council agrees to do so at the March 13 meeting. The committee of the whole agreed with fire Chief John Okum, who at the Feb. 28 meeting reiterated his concern for firefighter safety should an emergency occur on any

of the region’s rivers or lakes. Only two firefighters are available during the day to respond. When the service was introduced in 2001, 18 members were trained and equipped. The town is not obliged to provide fire services outside its jurisdiction. However, two major rivers converge in town, which has some councillors saying some level of water/ice service should be maintained inside town limits. Okum said he hasn’t

come to a decision on whether or not to do away with ice/water services in town, too. Coun. Lyle Anderson said the fire department should be responsible for responding to water rescues in Arnprior. He asked who would respond right now, if only two firefighters are available. “If a call were to come in today, the crew originally trained would be confident to respond,” Okum said. “I think we could respond safely, currently, today.”

Downtown revitalization was the focus of most of the discussion last week when a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) for Arnprior was introduced. Chris Tyrrell and Bobby Gauthier of the MMM Group, hired last fall by town council to create the plan and a strategy to implement it, gathered input Feb. 22 at an open house after the council meeting and at a stakeholders session the next day. The consultants and the local committee they’re working with would like to have all input by Monday, March 7. The group expects to have its completed report to council at a public meeting in April. The study document will be made available on the town’s website. Tyrrell reported that five area potential areas have been identified as suitable for a CIP program guiding community revitalization. They include the downtown, its two main entrances (the Daniel Street and Madawaska Boulevard corridors) and the waterfront on the Madawaska River extending to where it meets the Ottawa. The other possibility is the Highway 17 gateway area. Compared to many similar-sized towns, Arnprior’s downtown is in relatively good shape, said Tyrrell. “There are issues, but I don’t think Arnprior’s downtown is in trouble.” However, the CIP, which aims to capitalize on a project area’s strengths and address its shortcoming, could help the downtown, he said. Tyrrell said a thriving downtown needs to be attractive and provide a variety of services and amenities. “It needs be comfortable and safe … interesting and unique,” he said. He explained the downtown and its entrances can be enhanced with infilling and rehabilitation of existing properties. Daniel Street, in particular, has “significant opportunities” for infilling, he said. Tyrrell said encouraging owners to develop housing spaces in underutilized buildings can enhance the downtown.

“The more people live downtown, the more vital and safe it will be,” he said. Grants, loans and tax incentives can be used by the town to encourage owners, especially those of high profile sites, to improve or develop their properties, he said. He said Arnprior’s downtown has a good starting point with a number of historic facades and signage. Doug Smith suggested the plan include attracting new types of businesses to the downtown and enhancing trails, including promoting use of the railway bridge. It’s important the town show leadership and commitment to the program by being proactive in the CIP area by improving its open spaces and infrastructure, such as sidewalks, lighting, planters and seating, he stressed. The town can either embark on improvements itself or through community partnerships. Mayor David Reid agreed the town should be involved, as revitalization would help it by fostering economic development and increase tax revenue. “Anything that attracts more jobs is good for the community,” he said. Reid asked how much the town needed to “put out” to make it an effective program (council has voted down allocating money for a CIP reserve in the 2011 budget). Tyrrell said it varies, depending on priorities, but “dumping money” in the project does not necessarily translate into success. As well, “to be effective, it (CIP) should be nimble … it must respond to change,” he said. The town must also regularly monitor progress and effectiveness of the plan, he added, noting a CIP usually runs for about 10 years. Tyrrell explained that the CIP program can also be used to rehabilitate contaminated brownfield industrial areas for new uses, but cautioned that it can be an expensive undertaking for a community. In Arnprior, revitalizing the downtown and its entrance corridors appears to be a bigger priority, he said. He noted that other communities that have used CIPs include Perth, Brockville, Kingston and Cornwall.

Don’t give tax dollars to Grove owners, council told DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Arnprior council was warned during budget deliberations not to contribute funds to the Gillies Grove. In December, a representative from the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), the non-profit organization that owns the old-growth white pine forest, asked to “partner” with the town. The NCC has little experience maintaining properties near populated areas; most lands they protect are in the remote wilderness. They asked for money and help in cutting down dangerous trees and other maintenance.

Councillors agreed Gillies Grove is important to the people of Arnprior, many of whom contributed time and donations to saving it from being potentially clear cut for development in the 1990s. They agreed to the full amount asked for, $2,000, and some councillors mused aloud about services in kind, and inking a partnership over a five-year period. Not so fast, says Russ Corbett. His presentation to council Feb. 15 outlined four problems in forming a partnership with the NCC: • The NCC deems the Grove private property, meaning it can and has banned “several individuals” arbitrarily; • A group called the Land Preservation Society of the Ottawa Valley, made up

largely of Arnprior residents connected to the Grove, has $44,000 and that money should be accessed and used by the NCC before town taxpayers make a contribution; • The town could be found libel, as a partner, if an accident occurred, something Corbett asserted was possible since the NCC has little experience in maintaining forests for public use; • If the town funds the Gillies Grove, he asked, why not Macnamara Trail? It sets a precedent and could lead to a slippery slope. Corbett and the NCC have a checkered past. A long-time steward of the Gillies Grove, Corbett found himself banned from the premises for more than two

years after an altercation with homeowners living on a property surrounded by the grove. He has charged that the NCC plays favourites among users and is incompetent when it comes to maintenance. “Taxpayers should not be spending hard earned dollars on mismanagement,” he told council. “In less than two years, the $10,000 annual budget has been overspent, the Grove is a mess, motorized vehicles enter at will, damaging and posing a danger to visitors, and few want to volunteer because of the history of bans, signage, lawsuits, etc.” Council thanked him for the presentation, but made no decisions that evening.

Council shows pro-business side by reimbursing fee DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

A well-known developer benefitted from the new council asserting its pro-business image at a recent Arnprior council meeting. Staff was soundly rebuked at the Feb. 14 committeeof-the-whole meeting when they suggested sticking with a fee paid by Campanale Homes. Planner Robin Smith recommended not refunding the developer of Riverwood Estates subdivision (south of Madawaska Boulevard) a zoning bylaw amendment application fee of $1,500. The purpose of the application was to allow basement apartments, or granny flats, in any of the homes within the subdivision. Most municipalities, including Arnprior, support densification as a means to cut down on infrastructure costs.

Nevertheless, staff told Campanale it would have to prove the pipes and pumping station could handle the added capacity. The company’s consultant did that and submitted the report. However, the town then sent the report to its engineering consultant, J.L. Richards. It called the report incomplete and recommended getting more information from Campanale. “The developer informed the town that the cost to provide the additional information was very high and that the process was too onerous to continue and subsequently withdrew the application and requested that the application fee be returned,” reads Smith’s report. She added that the town’s consultant charged a few dollars more than was collected from Campanale, thus no reimbursement is recommended. Mayor David Reid said this is a “good example” of

what has gone wrong in the relationship between developers and the town. He said staff should have been able to review the application without having to send it to outside consultants, costing all stakeholders additional time and money. “We should be able to deal with these things in-house,” he said. “For whatever reason we were unwilling or unable to do it.” He added that giving work to the town’s consultant, who in turn sayS more work is needed, thus ensuring they get even more revenue from the town, doesn’t make sense. Reeve Walter Stack agreed, and added that with an aging population and rising energy costs granny flats will become even more important. See DEVELOPER page 7

A top regional bureaucratic is “concerned” with the growing number of complaints from neighbours of the Braeside Quarry. Steve Burns, ministry of the environment (MOE) Ottawa district manager, was provided with anecdotal evidence presented at a recent meeting between MOE and residents who live near the gravel quarry. While the quarry meets all health related standards, he said, MOE is currently in discussions with quarry operator Miller Group to reestablish monitoring for the coming construction season. “We know we are not dealing with a health-related issue,” he said, indicating he doesn’t mean residents are complaining of phantom illnesses. “Our staff have been in the vicinity for over 30 per cent of the times activities have taken place at the quarry. We have not been able to replicate their findings.” Asked if the residents’ are acting disingenuously, with an end-game to see Miller quit production altogether, Burns empathized and suggested the large number of people and complaints involved is cause for further investigation. “I’m concerned when we continue to hear complaints,” he said. “We’ll be meeting with the company to find out time lengths for operations this summer and

we’ll be out field surveys again.” Asked if MOE is more interested in protecting large corporations and the tax revenue they provide the government, Burns was blunt. “Our mandate is the protection of the public and natural environment.” Nevertheless, MOE officials on Jan. 31 were treated to a list of ailments 12 residents insist were caused by the lack of protection they receive from Miller’s activities at the quarry. They allegations include: • Complaints of seeing and smelling intense levels of emissions that force people indoors to shut their windows and doors; • A chemical spill would quickly spread through the fractured limestone to contaminate water supplies; • Blasting is too loud. Two past blasts have been larger than acceptable, one resulting in debris raining down on neighbouring properties; • Water is sapped from a nearby creek for use at the quarry; • Heavy truck traffic causes vibrations, is noisy and smelly, and has knocked out a wireless connection to at least one home business; • People suffering from hypersensitivities, allergies and other illnesses are vulnerable to levels of exposure the majority are not affected by. Some said the quarry’s previous owner was a family company living in the area who cared

about keeping strong relationships and working cooperatively. “We accepted Smiths as good neighbours, that’s why we could put up with a little dust and blasting and trucks,” said Norma Moore. “We knew it was a quarry. But what has happened in the last few years is something we have to stand up against.” Others said they have renovated their homes, installed new air systems to prevent smells permeating the interior for instance. But they worry about putting more money in if their property values plummet do to living next a quarry with ramped up activities. “I don’t complain often,” said Shawn Burton. “But I came from the best property I’ve ever owned to the worst.” Still others are exasperated with MOE. “We’re not all crazy. It’s bad. It smells. And I’m worried about our health,” said Mark Popiel. “I reject the conclusions of your report.”

JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

The money is appreciated, but more important is the reafďŹ rmation that the provincial government recognizes the need and value of the emergency department at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital. That’s the feeling of ADMH CEO Eric Hanna after returning last Friday from an announcement of operating funding for four Ottawa area hospitals undergoing major redevelopments. ADMH received $21,200, the ďŹ nal installment in half a million in ongoing operating funding for the hospital’s expanded emergency department. The hospital is using the money to provide additional nursing staff, as well as covering the extra cost of things such as cleaning, heat and lighting, needed now the emergency department has been

enlarged. “It’s good news ‌ we’ve got everything we asked for,â€? said Hanna. “What it does show is the government is continuing to invest capital and operating dollars in rural hospital emergency departments,â€? he added. That is reassuring because there were rumblings that some rural hospital emergency departments would be closed. However, with ďŹ ve Cabinet members present at the funding announcement in Ottawa, the government is making a statement of support for the hospital emergency departments involved. “It was nice to be invited,â€? said Hanna, adding the government obviously

agrees the ADMH emergency department is an important service in the community its serves. In total, more than $11.3 million was allocated to the recently-completed redevelopment projects, including $6.6 million to the Ottawa Hospital to support outpatient cancer care services and help the hospital better meet the needs of the community. Another almost $4.8 million went to the Montfort Hospital to support the expansion of medical, surgical, intensive care, surgical care for pregnant women and their babies and neonatal inpatient services, as well as ambulatory care services for day surgery, emergency, mental health, cardiac

care, diabetic education and orthopedics. The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario received $11,000 to support the recent East addition and renovations. “Today’s announcement ensures that we will continue to strengthen access to world-class cancer care for our community, said Dr. Jack Kitts, CEO of The Ottawa Hospital. “Patients will have improved access to health care as a result of these new operating dollars for hospitals in our region, said Champlain LHIN CEO Alex Munter. “The investments will help hospitals meet a growing demand for health services, providing people with care when they need it.

Lynn Grinstead said she was ďŹ ne with the decision to refund the fee in this instance, but that it shouldn’t become the norm for developers. The staff recommendation not to refund the fee was unanimously opposed. Vince Campanale was a vocal critic of the last council, saying it created an atmosphere at town hall that was lacking in a willingness to partner with businesses and at times appeared outright hostile. He said one of the

reasons his company decided to do business outside of Ottawa is because it believed smaller municipalities demand less red tape and would appreciate the business. That had been a wrong interpretation, he said, until now, following this recent decision. “That’s a good thing. I’m liking this new council. It shows to me this new council wants to do business, Campanale said. “They showed a fairness and they are on the right track. I think things are going to change. He hopes council will ensure processes are sped up at town hall.

Why must we destroy nature

Thanks, but study the parkland idea A group calling itself Supporters of Turtle Pond presented an interesting proposal to Arnprior committee of the whole at Monday’s meeting. They want the wetland area south of Madawaska Boulevard, behind Riverwood Estates, to be declared parkland. That in itself isn’t so special. Arnprior is blessed with large tracts of parkland, including Gillies Grove and Macnamara Trail. The difference is they want to do the work - for free. As in at no cost to the municipality. We want to be the first to say thank you for the generous offer by the 40-some members of Supporters of Turtle Pond, headed by frequent letter-writer Thomas Charbonneau. Tops among the many wonderful reasons to call Arnprior home is the willingness of residents to volunteer their time and talents for the betterment of us all. Their plan for this year is to continue clearing paths for easy accessibility and safety near the intersection of Moe Robillard and Short street. They even have informal support from companies in the area willing to donate materials and the use of equipment. Next year, with the town’s OK, they would create stairs from the rail bed east of the trestle over the Madawaska River down to the lower elevation. They would also create four foot bridges, a pedestrian crossing over the CN spur line. And fill in some holes on the rail bed that pose a safety risk. However, the town shouldn’t be too smitten with the offer of free work. Coun. Dan Lynch made a good point when he asked if the municipality would be held libel should an accident occur on structures built by non-municipality staff. Then there is the problem of continuing to promote densification in a town with many existing parklands. Also, what of parking? On the other hand, converting the wetland to parkland will ensure the protection of wildlife, including unique flora such as wild asparagus, and fauna such as otters, owls, ducks and suspected blanding turtles. It would also serve to remove one more party location from young people known to use drugs and alcohol at a shack. Again, we want to express our gratitude to Supporters of Turtle Pond for their offer. But we also want to advise town staff that due diligence remains paramount.

To the editor: I read Michael Runtz’s article and support his view on nature. I have spent a good part of my life in the wilds enjoying nature, which has given me so much understanding and respect for the animals that have to make a living. There is always a group ready and willing to destroy species as soon as populations increase, be it coyotes, black bears, black rhinos. I ask myself why does our species think it has the right to go out and decimate other species, not for food nor survival. What is lacking in our psyche that drives, particularly men, to go out and kill. Is it really a manly ego booster when hiding behind high tech rifles? The question I have is what can we do to stop this barbaric practice around the world. Would education help (in schools) to create an understanding and sensitivity, or do we just lack the intelligence to step back and set our shallow emotions for entertainment aside and learn to appreciate the wildlife. Have we become so removed from nature that the average person will never again understand and respect wild animals. Why this hatred and fear? Eva Schorer, Puslinch, Ont

Get involved to elect an effective MP To the editor: Recently one of our local papers (Arnprior Chronicle-Guide, Feb. 3) carried a political cartoon displaying the posters of the three major political parties side by side and, underneath, a voter writing ‘none of the above’. Probably most readers nodded in agreement. But there will be an election and we can expect the candidate of one of those parties to be elected. That person will carry forward our views and concerns to their party caucus and influence the decisions that affect us personally and as a nation. That person will also be ‘the face of our riding on the national stage’. Let’s get busy and see to it that we elect a person who can provide good representation and be a credit to the riding.

Without an opposition there is no lasting democracy. Egypt had a dictatorship for many decades because its presidents kept eliminating the opposition parties. Opposition parties not only provide an alternative choice of government, but they also keep the party in power from ignoring the will of the people between elections. A competent member of parliament who listens to her constituents and riding association and is respected by her fellow caucus members has an impact on how we are governed whether in the government or the opposition. If we want effective government, we need to work to strengthen our political parties. Politics is not a spectator sport. Orval Strong Matawatchan

Many people feel that they are excluded from the political process except for casting their ballot and maybe making a contribution to a party. But registered political parties are always looking for new members and once a year advertise their annual meetings where members can elect or seek election to the executive, Usually well before an election the executive will advertise, inviting those interested in running to contact the party and a nomination meeting will follow. During an election and between elections, the riding association helps identify the concerns and opinions of the residents off the riding and channels these to the MP, party executive and party leader. We continue to live in a democracy only because we have a party system.

NOTICE TOWN OF ARNPRIOR

STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Several Renfrew County councillors, who admit they have ample weight to lose, have joined the weight-loss competition between Renfrew and Lanark counties. If Renfrew County does win the Slim Till You Win event, which kicked off in early February, Warden Bob Sweet says there are enjoyable perks to enjoy at the expense of Perth Mayor John Fenik and Lanark County if Renfrew County emerges triumphant. First, Fenik will have to carry Sweet’s golf bag during this year’s warden’s golf tourney. Second, a Lanark County maple tree will have to be planted at the Renfrew County headquarters on International Drive. Third, Lanark County headquarters will have to fly the Renfrew County flag as a reminder of defeat. While many participants choose to keep their starting weight for the event confidential, Warden Sweet promoted the Slim Till You Win event in county council chambers Feb. 23 by announcing he’d lost 9.8 pounds since registering recently. “I never knew being healthy was so painful,” said Sweet, who has dusted off the treadmill at home, started exercising in the morning, and cut out desserts. “I have to tell you, I do feel better,” he said in encouraging other county councillors to join the campaign. “Let’s come on board. We have an opportunity to change from being Number One to being at least Number Two (in Ontario in terms of obesity).” Mike Nolan, chief of the Renfrew County paramedic service, also encouraged county councillors to register. In doing so, he admitted he related easily to the Eat Less, Move More bumper sticker he saw because eating less and moving more has been a life-long challenge for him. At last report, Nolan said there were 186 Lanark County and 226 Renfrew County registrants. But the latter’s number increased with 23 more weigh-ins at the county council session Feb. 23.The new registrants included several county councillors, county staff members, a paramedic and a journalist. Almost all county councillors are now part of Slim Till You Win. Don Eady of Horton Township had already registered in Renfrew, while weigh-ins at Warden Sweet’s office Feb. 23 included health committee chair Janice Visneskie, Audrey Green of Renfrew, Walter Stack of Arnprior and Peter Emon of Greater Madawaska. Each of those four has faced challenges with his or her weight over the years. “I think it’s a great competition with a great ending,” said Visneskie, who’s in her young 50s. “A lot of us have difficulty losing weight.” As a diabetic, she says insulin injections make her even hungrier. She also gets hunger pangs because she quit smoking three years ago and because of medication she takes after beating cancer two years ago. “Probably my biggest challenge is getting the exercise,” said Visneskie. “I do a lot of meetings, and when I finally get time to myself I tend to sit and have a cup of tea and not exercise.” At 240 pounds, Arnprior Reeve Stack

Paramedic Rob Dodge looks on as Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack weighs in for the Slim Till You Win competition. says he’d like to take off 25 pounds before Slim Till You Wind wraps up in late April. As his doctor told him a few years ago, he’s strong like a bull, but the bull’s a little too big. Stack has achieved big weight losses before, but this time he says the challenge will be to get back to eating three meals a day and not eating late at night. “Before, when I lost weight, I gave myself a cutoff point for meals of 7 p.m.” Renfrew Reeve Green says she doesn’t have a lot of weight to lose, but she kept her boots on “in case that helps” with her last weigh-in at county council April 27. Greater Madawaska Mayor Emon once lost 100 of his 240 pounds, but not the way anyone wants to. At age 19, he had a terrible motor vehicle accident, in which he broke his neck and was temporarily paralyzed. Now 50 years old and weighing 250 pounds, Emon says he’s already focusing on losing weight with the help of his wife Alanna. “She’s steadily pressuring me with reminders of how much (not) to eat,” he says. Once active and a solid 240 pounder because of athletic activities that included weightlifting and football, he says he now needs to lose considerable body fat. One challenge is his addiction to meat and chocolate. As a parent with two part-time jobs, he says the major weight-loss challenges include trying to eat smaller portions and avoiding large quantities of food while eating on the run. “The presentations today talked about changing your lifestyle and eating habits,” said Emon. Which is what Emon and several fellow county councillors plan to do.

The Town of Arnprior has received application ZBLA-7/10 for an amendment to Zoning By-law 4990-01, as amended, for the vacant portion of the lands described as part of Lot 4, Conc. B, Part Park Lot 6, Plan 19, Part Lots 3 and 7, Plan 63, Part Lot 42, Reserve C, Plan 40, municipally known a 128 Mary Street, as shown on the attached Key Map. Public Meeting A public meeting giving the public an opportunity to make representations in respect of the zoning amendment will be held on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Town Hall, 105 Elgin Street West, Arnprior. Description of Application The proposed zoning amendment would rezone the vacant lands from the Community Facility (CF) Zone to a Residential Three – Exception Thirteen – holding (R3-E13-h) Zone to permit all density of residential development. The “exception” implements a height limitation of a maximum three (3) storeys and a lot frontage minimum of 16.5 metres. The removal of the holding symbol will require approval of a comprehensive servicing report and site plan for any future development of the site. Further Information To view any information or materials related to the proposal, please contact the Planning Office, Town Hall, 105 Elgin Street West, Arnprior, or on the Town’s web site at www.arnprior.ca. Notification and Submission Requirements If you wish to be notified of the adoption of the proposed zoning by-law amendment, or a refusal of a request to amend the Zoning By-law, you must make a written request to: Clerk, Town of Arnprior, 105 Elgin Street West, Arnprior, Ontario, K7S 0A8. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Town of Arnprior before the proposed Zoning By-law amendment is adopted, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision of the Town of Arnprior to the Ontario Municipal Board. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Town of Arnprior before the proposed Zoning By-law amendment is adopted, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Ontario Municipal Board unless, in the opinion of the Board, there are reasonable grounds to add the person or public body as a party. Sponsors help First Robotics Team bring STEVE to fruition Continued from front There are only about 70 teams in Canada, explains Cudmore, and the winners can go on to compete with 3,000 competitors from around the world. The competition is designed as a sporting event, with the goal of having the arm operating out on the field with others in the March competition. The efforts of the First Robotics team, with members working after school and on weekends, have been impressive, says Cudmore. And while the work is complicated and detailed, the idea is for the students to enjoy themselves while they’re learning. “The basic idea is to have fun,” says Cudmore. “What they do is take high school kids and give them a virtually impossible challenge and see where they go with it. The kids had six weeks to basically imagine the thing and put it together.” The students haven’t had to go it alone. First Robotics provided a parts kit in January and over the six weeks the team had to build it, along with support from Cudmore and teacher Mauri Gonzales. Local support was strong. Arnprior Aerospace has been a major sponsor, with engineer Lyle Muldoon providing valuable input and a donation of aluminum. The students are pumped about STEVE and excited to get him on the field. “They want to create the same excitement about science and technology as there is about sports,” explains Cudmore, “so it’s designed as a sporting event.” The arm is operated from a netbook and the team has not yet decided which team member

will be selected for the all-important task of driver. And while the contest may be designed as a sporting competition, the spirit of teamwork is paramount. Students whose robots are working fine are known to help those who are having difficulty. Captain Hannah Jones, who brought the idea to Cudmore’s attention last year, appreciates the peer support. “The goal is for everyone’s robot to get out on the field. It’s a really supportive group,” says Jones. She first learned of the program when she met and befriended a First Robotics competitor at summer camp. She kept track of his team’s success and was excited to be able to get the ball rolling for the ADHS team. “It’s really awesome,” says Jones, who is grateful for the community support. “It really was amazing that Arnprior Aerospace sponsored us. Without them it really wouldn’t have happened,” she says. MDS also came through with materials for the project and the team has received donations from Northern Credit Union, Rona and Castlegarth, which is hosting a fundraising dinner March 3. The team also expresses its thanks to its mentor team from St.Catharines, which has helped the rookie team through its first try. As per First Robotics rules, STEVE was packed up and sealed when the six-week time period was up. “It’s sealed up until we go to the contest at the end of March,” says Cudmore. The core group of about 15 students will travel to Mississauga for the three-day event.

Continued from 8 I suppose that Ms. Tabbert knows all about this subject, what with the track record of the Liberals in sending Canadians overseas in outdated equipment in order to save a buck by bribing Canadian voters with failed social programs. New jails: Of course we need new jails, after years and years of hug a thug Liberal policies. We need that space for all those repeat offenders and those that aren’t put off by our weak justice system. You know, the one that gives out harsher punishment to ordinary Canadians for paper crimes related to making sure their rifles are registered, or for trying to defend their homes?

Yes, Ms. Tabbert, your Liberal party gave us Bill C68, criminalizing ordinary Canadians, and it is your party that also has put Canadians in danger from criminals. Corporate tax cuts: I’m going to make this as simple as possible: if taxes for businesses are not kept low, businesses will leave Canada, and outside business will not invest in a country that has high tax rates, and our economy will go down the drain. The Liberal party policy of being hostile to business and punishing the successful is outdated and frankly should be insulting to anyone that has worked hard to contribute to Canada. Hey, here’s an idea: maybe lowering taxes and providing incentives to

the telecommunications companies will help them send better Internet out into rural areas. Might even provide jobs, as there would be more businesses if taxes were lower (after all, contrary to popular belief, it’s not the job of the government to create jobs). Maybe if taxes were lower, people would stay in Renfrew-NipissingPembroke, as they could afford to instead of giving over half their wages to the government at all levels (here’s looking at you, Arnprior town council) What a radical thought. Certainly better than the obsolete class warfare peddled by Ms. Tabbert, that’s for sure. Michael Garbuio Arnprior

Junior Redmen crowned EOSSAA champs CHRONICLE-GUIDE STAFF The Arnprior District High School junior Redmen basketball team are the school’s newest eastern Ontario champions, capturing ADHS’s first EOSSAA title, junior or senior, since 1992. The Redmen, seeded number one, opened up the tournament on their home court Feb. 23 with a come-from-behind overtime victory over LaSalle from Kingston. Cody Moore led the comeback over the pesky numberfive seeds, nailing a three-pointer with 14 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. The Redmen went on to win 56-52. Moore led all scorers with 30 points. Mike Shoveller had 11 points and Jaegr Prot and Keenan Laughlin added six each. In game two, the Redmen cruised to an easy 17-point win over LaCitadelle of the Cornwall area. Shoveller led the way with 31 points. Prot and Liam Dey had eight points each. This set up the championship game between the Redmen and Brockville Collegiate Institute Red Rams, which had upset second-seed Smiths Falls in the tournament’s first game. The Redmen jumped out to an early lead and stayed ahead the whole game before an excited crowd of ADHS supporters. In a game that featured 19 three-pointers, 12 by the Redmen, nobody shot it better than Prot. He had a career high 29 points, including 6-of-8 from three-point land. Shoveller had 23 points and Moore had five three-pointers and 17 points in the win. The final score was 77-68 for the Redmen.

MGHA tournament deemed a success The Madawaska Girls Hockey Association held a tournament at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior Feb. 26 and 27. It has been several years since the MGHA has hosted a home tournament, and this year’s was a great success. About 360 girls made up 24 teams in peewee, bantam and midget divisions, playing 33 games over two days. Most of the games were very close and low scoring thanks to great goaltending and defensive play by these young players. The champions were: Power Workers Union Peewee Division - Champions Nepean Dynamite, Finalists Kanata Smurfs Magnetsigns Bantam Division - Champions Nepean Hot Rods, Finalists Madawaska Mustangs Ontario Power Generation Midget Division - Champions Kanata Koolaid, Finalists Nepean Wildcats The tournament was a great lead-in to the playoffs for our teams to determine the bragging rights in the Ottawa Valley in each of the three divisions. MGHA currently has four teams in the association - one peewee, one bantam and two midget teams. We are a house league organization who play with the Ottawa Valley Girls Hockey Association with regular season games against Pembroke, Petawawa, Eganville and Barry’s Bay. MGHA combines girls from

Girls a bit younger than peewee are welcome to join and grow into the league! Registration will be coming up soon for the new season starting this fall. It is a fun league where every girl gets a chance to play. Watch for registration dates coming soon.

Four Arnprior wrestlers heading to OFSAA Eight Arnprior District High School wrestlers competed at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Associations championship (EOSSAA) in Renfrew Feb. 15. The wrestlers had to finish in first or second place in their weight division to advice to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) championship. in Sudbury from March 2 to 4. Over 600 wrestlers will be in attendance, including four from Arnprior. After a few years away from wrestling, Jesse Andrews returned to the mat and won his two matches quite easily, bringing home the gold. Rebecca Dolan had to win her match against a Renfrew wrestler to also win gold and she did just that. Tyler Pike put up a good fight in his match and came home with silver. Darren Mayhew

Arnprior’s other team members all wrestled well and have shown great improvement in their skill and knowledge of the sport in the past few months. In one of the weight categories, three Arnprior wrestlers - Braydon Miller, Joel Woodhouse and Nathan Andrews had to wrestle each other, which was a

very hard thing to do as you train at least twice a week with each other. Nathan finished in third after winning a very tough last match. Jackson DeAbreu wrestled some tough matches as well during the day. The boys team placed third in the team standings for the tournament, which is quite an accomplishment as other teams had a minimum of 10 to 15 wrestlers.

Pride bantam girls make Arnprior proud

The Arnprior Pride bantam girls hosted a basketball tournament at Arnprior District High School on Sunday, Feb. 27. They played the Gloucester Wolverines and the Ottawa Xelles. In previous meetings in Belleville and Orleans the Wolverines had handed the local team lopsided losses with a smothering aggressive press. They had played the Xelles in the same two tournaments and came out with a two-point loss each time The goal for the day against the Wolverines was to cut down the turnovers and to limit the many easy layups. The team came out with their best effort of the year and limited Gloucester to four points in

the first 14 minutes of the half. The score at half was 9-8. The Pride showed poise in the late going and persevered with a 26–22 victory. Emma Shoveller, Emma Pettigrew, Jenika Steele, Caitlin Houge and Paula Meek did the scoring. The hustle of Ali McClure, Lindsay Sherman, and Mackenzie Munro contributed to the intense defence put forward by the Pride. The Pride came out strong in the second game and Elizabeth Chirico and Logan Kenny used their quickness to counter the Xelles’ two fast guards which led Arnprior to a 35 – 29 victory. The team has to wait until late March to continue their success when they go to Hamilton for a tournament.

Junior B semifinal action heats up PETER CLARK Peter.clark@metroland.com

Some overtime magic has guided the Arnprior Packers to a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League semifinal series with the Almonte Thunder. Wins by 6-5 and 4-3, both in extra time, followed by a 3-1 setback still leaves Arnprior with the edge as the teams reconvened in Almonte last (Wednesday) night. The result of game six was past Chronicle-Guide deadlines. PACKERS 6, ALMONTE 5 (OT) The Packers pulled out a thrilling 6-5 overtime victory in game three of the series last Wednesday night at the Nick Smith Centre. Patrick Dick’s second goal of the night at the 7:12 mark of extra time gave Arnprior the win in a game of many lead changes and momentum swings. Braedon Moffatt also netted a pair for the Packers. Matt Crozier and Stephen Baylis canned singles. Arnprior led 2-0 through 20 minutes, but trailed 4-3 entering the third stanza.

Goals from Baylis and Dick put them in a position to win, before Almonte’s Tim McGrath pulled the Thunder even with 3:21 remaining. Dick converted setups from Michael Byrne and Brock Zielinski in the extra frame to give Arnprior the margin of victory. The Packers fired 47 pucks the way of Almonte’s Morgan Barr over 60-plus minutes. Veteran German Tsatsura started for Arnprior, but was replaced by Matt Gagne after the Thunder opened the second period with four goals in less than six minutes. Combined, the two Packer goalkeepers faced 29 shots. PACKERS 4, ALMONTE 3 (OT) The Packers didn’t let some misfortune stand between themselves and victory in Almonte Saturday night. Twice Arnprior was denied goals moments apart in the third period when the Thunder net came off its moorings, either of which would have given the Pack-

ers a 4-1 lead. There was also a similar instance in the second period. Almonte rallied with two goals in the last four minutes of regulation time before Taylor Collins came back to sink the game winner at 5:09 of overtime. Colin Bradbury had two goals and Patrick Dick one for Arnprior. The Thunder countered with markers from the sticks of Parker Davies, Aaron MacCosham and Steve Miller. The Packers outshot Almonte 57-30, including 5-0 in the overtime. German Tsatsura was back between the pipes for Arnprior and earned the netminding victory. Morgan Barr kept Almonte in contention. ALMONTE 3, PACKERS 1 The Packers led a golden opportunity to put this series on ice slip through their fingers at the Nick Smith Centre Sunday night. Eric Leighton and Storm Carisse, on a powerplay, connected 1:36 apart to snap

a goalless tie late in the second period, and that was all the Thunder needed. Mark Craig put the Packers on the board with his second of the series on a powerplay at 8:11 of the final session, but that was as close as Arnprior got. Morgan Barr blocked 31 shots and Steve Miller connected into an empty net 27 seconds from the end to keep Almonte in the postseason hunt. German Tsatsura faced 26 Thunder shots. Sunday’s game was the second in the series in which Arnprior forwards were held off the scoresheet. “It’s tough to win if your forwards are scoring,” Packers coach and general manager said. “I thought it was their best effort,” he was quick to add of the Thunder. Griese said his team had things well in control at Almonte before having the two goals called back late in the third period. He was expecting another good battle at Almonte in game six. If necessary, game seven is set for the Nick Smith Centre at 8 p.m. Friday.

ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE - March 3 2011

Nature’s Way

When I was young, one of the birds I most wanted to see was a bald eagle. I admired their portraits in books and dreamt about them. But they were rare back then, and resided on the U.S. Endangered Species List (since 1963). In 1973 they gained additional protection when President Richard Nixon signed the U.S. Endangered Species Act into law, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources declared the bald eagle a provincially endangered species. Eagles were rare because of habitat loss, human persecution, and DDT, the poison that also nearly wiped out the eastern race of peregrine falcon. DDT was banned in 1972 and eventually falcons and eagles began to produce healthy eggs and repopulate their former range. In the United States, bald eagles increased from 417 nesting pairs in 1963 to more than 11,000 pairs in 2007. In southern Ontario there were virtually no nesting birds in the late 1970s; currently more than 60 territories are now occupied. As a result, in August 2009

the status of bald eagles in southern Ontario was revised from Endangered to “Special Concern.” Recent studies on Ontario bald eagles have provided some fascinating insights into their movements. In 2006, two Kingston eaglets harnessed with radio transmitters did something unexpected. After fledging, one headed north to Hudson Bay while its sibling flew south to Virginia. At year’s end they reunited back at their Kingston nest! If you want to know more about eagle research, visit www.bsceoc.org/ research/speciesatrisk/baea/index. jsp?targetpg=history. Thanks to Sloan Watters and Bill Moore, I eventually met a bald eagle below the Mountain Chute Dam on the Madawaska River. Years later Donnie Gordon and I discovered a nest on an island below the dam, and even later Mark Stabb and I located a second nest farther downstream in the Madawaska. Bald eagles are now commonly encountered on the Madawaska and Ottawa rivers, and they make regular winter appearances in Arnprior, Pakenham, and Galetta. Recent sightings come from Pakenham, Constance Bay,

and White Lake. Recently, Sheila Cameron watched three adult bald eagles feasting on a dead deer near Vydon Acres. The latter is not surprising. While fish are favoured meals, eagles readily scavenge animal carcasses, especially in winter. Thus, wolves and coyotes play essential roles in the survival of eagles. Bald eagles also have a penchant for ducks. They are drawn to large flocks, especially at freeze-up. In late fall eagles are often seen pursuing common mergansers in White Lake. We are fortunate that these magnificent birds are now regularly encountered. They are huge – their wingspan approaches seven feet – and as adults (a stage that takes five years to reach) they are unmistakable. For centuries bald eagles have been an American symbol of freedom and will. However, I wonder if the proponents of this iconic status were aware that bald eagles, in addition to being scavengers, are bullies and thieves (they rob fish from ospreys). Some might think their designation even more appropriate! The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

This beautiful little cat is very affectionate and would make a great companion. Milo was brought to the shelter to find a new home. He loves attention and will climb up on your shoulders and lay there as long as you let him. Milo gets along with some cats but really prefers his own space. He is curious, outgoing, loves to explore and will make an ideal companion for anyone who is home a lot.

This pretty little cat is very sweet and quiet. Tiffany was brought to the shelter because she didn’t get along with her owner’s other cat Tiffany is very affectionate and loves being petted. She gets along with other cats but really prefers her own space. Please consider giving this lovely cat a new home.

Accidental 911 calls plague OPP

Renfrew OPP report officers responded to many false or accidental 911 calls during the past few months. Many times there appears to be a problem with the

phone line, and if this is the case OPP urge residents to call Bell Canada to repair the problem. Parents are also urged to place phones out of reach

of young children to avoid having them play with the phone. The police are obligated to attend any residence where a 911 call originates to ensure

public safety, so false or accidental calls take up valuable police time. “Please use care when dialing to avoid an accidental 911 call,” say police.

Century 21 Explorer Realty Inc

Gas cards available to families fighting cancer Recovery Road, a non-profit, Christianbased organization, officially launched its program Feb. 25 to assist parents, financially, with transportation costs when having to take their child to Ottawa or elsewhere for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. MacEwen Petroleum $25 gas cards are available at all Northern Credit Union offices in Renfrew County. Proof of an appointment is required. Posters and information brochures are being delivered to all medical professionals, hospital and clinics in Renfrew County in order this information can be made available to any parents in this situation. Since the conception of Recovery Road in the fall 2010, many individuals, organizations and business have contributed towards the cost of these gas cards and to the sponsorship of the manufacturing of the CD ‘With Dignity’, which is on sale through-

out the County. The entire proceeds are being used for this worthwhile purpose. To supplement the purchase of gas cards beyond the funds raised by the CD proceeds, a ‘Recovery Road Gospel Tour’ is being established to hold fundraising concerts in various parts of Renfrew County. It would be most appreciated if churches would step forward and host these events using Recovery Road as an outreach program in their communities. The officers of Recovery Road are chairman Ron Watson, vice-chairperson and secretary Melissa Vanderwal, treasurer Jenn DuMoulin, and directors Lois Hunt, Joe and Susan Moreau, Ann Reinke, Brian Stokes, Bonnie Watson, Shirley Watson and Brian Yuke. For information, or to find out how you may help, contact Ron Watson at 613628-2860 or Melissa Vanderwal at 613-6285401.

In his February column, Renfrew-NipissingPembroke John Yakabuski MPP says he is baffled by the way the Liberal government treats small and medium-sized businesses in Ontario. He says red tape is a major concern for small business owners, second only to the high cost of taxes. “We created a Red Tape Commission to find out where over-regulation was strangling business initiative, and once identified, we moved to get those unnecessary barriers out of the way, so that people wishing to start or keep their small businesses had a fighting chance to be successful, and in their turn, share that success through the hiring of greater numbers of employees,” says Yakabuski. For the full column, visit yourottawaregion.com/ columns.

One of the hardest parts of diagnosing kidney disease is the fact that kidney problems often have few symptoms. For this reason, kidney disease is often called a silent killer. Medical experts estimate that as many as 2.1 million Canadians have kidney damage, but most of them aren’t even aware of it. Kidney disease is a term used to describe kidneys that have been damaged and are not working at ideal capacity. For most people, this damage happens gradually, over many years. When kidney damage is extensive, people develop kidney failure, or end stage renal disease. At this point, in order for a person to survive, they must undergo replacement therapy (dialysis or a kidney transplant) to do the work their kidneys can no longer do. Most people can live normal, healthy lives until their kidney function falls to 10 to 15 per cent. That is when most of the health problems become more noticeable. While many people have no symptoms of kidney problems, even when their kidneys are badly damaged, common warning signs can include: • High blood pressure • Changes in urine • Puffiness around the eyes, swelling of hands and feet, especially in children • Bloody, cloudy or tea-colored urine • Pain in the small of the back just below the ribs (not aggravated by movement) • Excessive foaming or difficulty passing urine • Persistent generalized itching • Passing less often or more often at night • Fatigue • Protein in urine • Loss of appetite or weight Uremia, which means “urine in the blood,” is one of the signs of advanced kidney failure. Uremia occurs when failing kidneys are unable to remove wastes from the body. In most cases, it occurs when kidney damage is severe. Some symptoms that may occur with uremia are: • Forgetfulness • Weakness • Cold intolerance • Nausea or vomiting • Chest pain • Bad taste in mouth • Skin color changes • Restless legs or leg cramps • Decreased sexual desire • Difficulty sleeping If you have any warning signs of kidney disease or uremia, it's important to talk to your doctor. People who are at greater risk for kidney disease – those with diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of kidney disease – should ask their doctor to test their kidney function every year. That way, any problems can be diagnosed and treated early. Information courtesy of The Kidney Foundation of Canada’s website: www.kidney.ca

The Renfrew OPP is encouraging everyone to enjoy all that winter has to offer, but to keep safety at the forefront. S n ow m o b i l ing is a favourite pastime for many in this area, but as with any motorized sport, it comes with some element of risk. The OPP urge riders to avoid getting into trouble by riding with care and control within their own level of ability and according to current trail and weather conditions. They also advise snowmobilers to stay on the designated trails that are opened, marked, mapped, maintained and patrolled. Sledders should also be aware of ice to reduce the risk of hypothermia or drowning from riding into open water or falling through, as well as avoiding collisions with fixed objects such as docks, ice huts or shorelines. S n ow m o b i l ers are encouraged to slow down at night and during times of reduced visibility be prepared by carrying a tool kit, spare parts, flashlight, firstaid kit and survival items. As well, snowmobilers should never snowmobile alone.

Arnprior OPP remind people to be very careful of anyone requesting they provide money to assist a ‘relative’ or one who has been arrested and requires bail money. There are also several other scams in which people are told they have won money but need to send some money first to secure their prize. Others want you to hold onto millions of dollars as their country is under siege or some other excuse. There are also over-pay-

They are waiting for us only, Where no pain can ever mar; Dear one, you, who left us lonely, Watch us through the gates ajar, There a father, there a mother, Gone within those gates ajar. Never forgotten, Love, Alan SIDNEY, Ed In loving memory of my dear brother Ed who passed away February 28th, 2004. I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new. I thought of you yesterday, and days before that to. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name, All I have is memories, And picture in a frame, Your memory is a keepsake with which I will never part, God has you in his keeping, I have you in my heart. Lovingly remembered, Blanche, Emmett and Family BUDARICK, Lloyd In loving memory of my precious Father who passed away March 1, 2007. I often lay awake at night when the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane with tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, But missing you is a heartache that never goes away, I hold you tightly within my heart and there you will remain, Life has gone on without you, but it will never be the same. We miss you more than anyone knows, A teardrop falls when we see that yellow rose, We want to stand tall, In memory of you, But no one can ever replace what you do. You were our wonderful Grandma, The one and only one, Together we shared so much laughter, sleepovers, and fun. We will never forget the beautiful woman you were, But your life was too short, That was for sure. To see our minds at peace, We share memories all the time, Whenever we find your treasures or hear your music chime. You were such a special Grandma, Our hearts will never be okay, We will never ever forget you, So we just wanted to say.. We know eventually we’ll be together... One Sweet Day.

Bass, WINGS take flight in awareness fight By Rob Brodie OttawaSenators.com Cody Bass is still young enough to relate to the difficulties teenagers face in today’s world. But he’s also reached the age that has him believing he can make a difference. And wanting to be a leader in a cause that touches more people with each passing day. With the memory of Daron Richardson in mind, the Binghamton Senators forward has launched WINGS — an acronym that stands for When I Need Guidance and Support. It is intended to raise more awareness about the issue of teenage suicide, which claimed the life of the 14-year-old daughter of Ottawa Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson last November. “I don’t think people really realize how hard it is to be in high school these days and to be a teenage kid,” said Bass. “I’m only 24 — I was a teenager six years ago and now I’m a young adult. I have two younger sisters who are teenagers and they’ve kind of had a hard time in high school as well. I just want to get the message out there that you should never feel alone and never feel you have to take your own life by suicide. “There should always be

somebody there to help out, no matter what. So that’s kind of the message we’re trying to get across. Make sure every teen has somebody there (with a shoulder) to cry on or to just listen.” Bass feels a closer connection to the Richardson tragedy than most. When he was called up to Ottawa for the first time, the Richardsons opened their home to him and he came to see their family as his own. It was simply their way. “They made it feel like home to me,” said Bass. “Living there, I got to know Daron pretty well. I got to know Morgan (her older sister). I got to know the whole family. They made me feel right at home and treated me really well. Luke is just a special man. He’s one of the greater guys I’ve ever met. “The whole family is just unbelievable. I can’t thank them enough. It’s just a tragic thing to see what happened with Daron, so anything you can do to give back in honour of the Richardson name is awesome.” Bass and B-Sens teammate drove to Ottawa to attend the celebration of life for Daron, which drew 5,600 people to Scotiabank Place — “one of the saddest things I’ve ever had to sit through in my life,” he later told theahl.

com. By the time he returned to Binghamton, Bass knew he had to do something in memory of Daron. With the help of B-Sens staffers Kate Krenzer and Christa Reese, along with Jennifer O’Brien, the owner of the Magic Paintbrush Project in the Binghamton area, WINGS soon took flight. A silent auction was held just before Christmas, which raised more than $4,600 for the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health and the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier in Binghamton. Another event, an outdoor skate held last Monday in Binghamton, raised another $800 for WINGS. The B-Sens’ wives and girlfriends got on board with a candy cane fundraiser before Christmas. Fans in other American Hockey League cities have come to Bass, wanting to donate to the cause. So have game officials. The movement continues to grow and it has been a lifechanging one for Bass. “I’ve met some amazing people that have had amazing stories,” he said. “The support from around the league, from random fans donating money and referees who have donated money, and just people jumping on board who wanted to help … those people are special people and I can’t thank them enough.”

New York Rangers Friday, March 4, 7:30 p.m., TSN

Henrik Lundqvist

Photo by Andy Marlin/ NHLI via Getty Images

The Rangers find themselves in a heated battle to maintain their grip on an Eastern Conference playoff berth. Martin Gaborik, the most dynamic element of a Blueshirts attack that is otherwise rather blue collar in nature, is sidelined with a concussion, so it’ll be up to by the likes of Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Ansimov and newcomers Derek Stepan and Brian Boyle to carry more of the load. It’s a mix of young and old on the New York blue line, which features Dan Girardi, Marc Staal and Michael del Zotto. Perhaps the biggest key for the Rangers is the play of workhorse Henrik Lundqvist, one of the NHL’s elite goaltenders.

He knows there are more stories out there, more people who need a helping hand. “The reality is, stuff like this does happen. You just don’t hear about it,” said Bass. “Everybody has their own story. You walk by somebody on the street and you don’t know what their story is until one day, you stop and talk to them. I have all these random people and for them to share their stories with me … These people have lost kids and family members, and it’s just a tragedy. “I don’t wish that upon anybody, especially young children that have their whole lives ahead of them. It’s a tough life out there and you just hope for the best for everybody. If you have kids, you definitely want to see them grow up and live their lives.” To learn more about the program or to make a donation, visit www.codybasswings. com or www.facebook.com/ codybassWINGS.
