Saturday bound Elgin Street Farmers’ Market plans expanded season JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

The Arnprior Elgin Street Farmers’ Market is moving from Wednesday to Saturday. The Market is also extending its season and vendors are not ruling out a future move to a new location. Jim Wright provided a farmers’ market update Tuesday at the annual meeting of the Arnprior downtown Business Improvement Association (BIA). He said market members agreed at a recent meeting to move to Saturday, an announcement that drew cheers from some BIA members. Town council still needs to approve the request. Wright said one of last year’s vendors has other commitments

TIME CHANGE It’s time to spring ahead. This Sunday at 2 a.m. Daylight Saving Time returns. It’s a timely change, as people will be enjoying the March Break next week. And spring is only 10 days away, although it was hard to tell during mid-week’s blizzard.

and can’t make Saturdays, but the rest are on board, at least for now. If council and the BIA approves, the market season will run from May 28 to Oct. 8, longer than its three previous years, Wright said. He said the market vendors came away from their meeting with three recommendations. Along with the day change is a decision to stay on Elgin Street despite some talk of moving to the Curling Club or the parking lot behind Shoppers Drug Mart. The third recommendation was to implement a seasonal fee that would provide an incentive for vendors to show up more frequently. The fee would be less than paying the weekly rate. Andy Dunlop remembered for his community spirit JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

A former McNab-Braeside councillor and tireless community worker is being mourned by his many friends in the area. White Lake resident Andy Dunlop died March 4 at the age of 66. He had spent the day touring around with his wife, Betty, and was reportedly tinkering with his truck when he had an

apparent heart attack and died. His funeral Wednesday at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church in Arnprior attracted a large crowd of friends and admirers. He is survived by Betty and his daughter Leah Barrie, who is expected the Dunlop’s second grandchild in a couple of weeks. “He was very committed to his family, and his community,” said

McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell. She noted Dunlop was often “colourful” in his comments and had a great sense of humour. “It was a very dry humour … he could see the ironies in life,” she said. “He was very insightful. “He was not afraid to speak his mind,” she added. He felt it was important to give people who not always had champions a voice, she said. “He wasn’t shy

about criticizing hypocrisy … and speaking up on the contrary side of an issue.” Dunlop and his wife, Betty, lived in the White Lake area for 37 years. He served in the armed forces before working for a real estate company, the Ontario Housing Corporation, Boeing and his own sporting good store. See ‘McNAB, Page 2

McNab-Braeside, Arnprior mourns death of a good citizen Continued from front When the Dunlop children were growing, he was a leader in promoting recreational activities and facilities in the White Lake area and at McNab Centre Park. “He has contributed much to our recreational facilities,” said Campbell. As well as being involved with youth hockey and ball, he was an active member of the Arnprior Lions, Arnprior Legion and the Arnprior Knights of Columbus, where he is a past Grand Knight. He was also a past president and past zone chairman of the Lions. His wife is an active member of the Arnprior Lionettes and the Catholic Women’s League. Dunlop’s community experience stood him in good stead when he was elected to McNab-Braeside council in 2006, said Elmer Raycroft, who served alongside Dunlop for four years. “He was an excellent councillor … he represented the taxpayers very well.” He said despite health issues in the last year of his term, Dunlop was al-

ways willing to help and contribute. Raycroft said Dunlop was approachable, well prepared, fair and a passionate advocate for the causes he believed in. “He spoke from the heart,” he said. “And he had a heart of gold. Everyone liked him.” Coun. Brad McIlquham, who was elected to council along with Dunlop in 2006, said he was committed to looking after people from all corners of the township. He championed many causes that were of concern to seniors and people on fixed incomes, he said. He said Dunlop was not afraid of speaking out on controversial topics such as the coyote cull. “Everyone knew where he stood,” he said. “There was no waffling.” Despite his strong opinions, Dunlop was fun to be around, said McIlquham. “Even when he was arguing with you he had a smile on his face. There were a lot of good times.” “He was always good to work with,” agreed township treasurer-deputy clerk Connie Gra-

ham, noting his community contacts were impressive. Members of the Arnprior Knights of Columbus and Arnprior Legion held special gatherings at the Pilon Funeral Home during Tuesday’s visitation to honour Dunlop. Knights member John Wagner said Dunlop was “always there willing to help when something needed to be done.” He was a loyal Knight who worked his way through the ranks to Grand Knight, he said. He was active to the end, organizing the Knight’s elections this year, Wagner noted.

ANDY DUNLOP Arnprior Legion president Ray Cunningham said Dunlop joined the Legion in

1962 in Carleton Place and was elected vice-president of the Arnprior branch in 1994. Past-president Bob Adkins said Dunlop also served as the Legion’s Sergeant-atArms. “He was a good supporter (of the Legion), a good guy,” he said. Arnprior Coun. and Legionnaire Dan Lynch said that Dunlop wore a blue beret and jacket, which indicated he had made United Nations tours. “He was a good Armed Forces person, a super-duper guy with a great sense of humour,” he said. Campbell noted Dunlop

liked delving into his Scottish roots and was a big supporter of the Scottish festival. He was resplendent in Scottish garb at his daughter’s wedding, she said. The Dunlops persevered despite more than their share of family tragedy. Their son Drew died in 2001 while still in his 20s from the same type of cancer that afflicted Terry Fox. Their other son, Chris, died in a car crash in 2008. The family has asked that donations in Dunlop’s memory be made to Arnprior Kidsport or the St. John Chrysostom Church Raise the Roof fund.

ing until 10 a.m. be urged to open earlier to take advantage of the people the market attracts. Wright said the market is setting up a three-member committee to guide the market.

He said he hopes town council will approve the market’s requests soon so it can begin advertising for vendors. BIA members suggested an expanded Farmers’ Market would fit in well with

improvements to John and Daniel Streets, anticipated to happen next year. The BIA is also anticipating improvements to the downtown will be encouraged in the community improvement plan.

Continued from front “We want to become the best market in the area,” said Wright, noting the market’s goal is to have 20 vendors this year. The previous high was 14 and last year’s average was about 10, he said. To be eligible, vendors have to sell produce and products from Renfrew and Lanark counties or West Carleton. Wright said while the vendors have agreed to stay on the south side of Elgin Street, it doesn’t preclude a future move. “It’s not a closed issue,” he said. Karen Robertson questioned whether the John Street parking lot would be a better spot for the market. Wright explained the vendors like the visibility of the Elgin location by John and Daniel street traffic. Vendors would like eventually to use the whole block, he said. New BIA chairperson Chantal Beaulieu said the BIA prefers the market stay downtown and not move up closer to the mall. She suggested the market and the BIA work together on organizing entertainment downtown on Saturdays. “It would be good to have different things every week.” “We need to make this a happening,” said Gwen Storie. “It’s got to be fun (to attend the market),” agreed Wright. It was also suggested that downtown stores not open-

CHANGING OF THE BIA GUARD After the new Arnprior downtown Business Improvement Association executive was elected Tuesday, new chairperson Chantal Beaulieu thanked outgoing treasurer Brian Argue for his seven years of service and secretary Gwen Storie for her faithful work for the organization. The BIA held its annual meeting at the fire hall. Beaulieu reviewed the BIA’s activities in 2010, Argue presented the financial statement that includes a $15,000 carryover from last year and members discussed 2011 goals, including working with the town on the community improvement plan that is focusing on the downtown. CN and TPR working toward final rail deal: Gibeau be on side,” explained Gibeau. “When a not-for-profit, public sector entity engages to acquire a private sector asset, it’s not necessarily like an asset acquisition process between for-profit organizations.” Transport Pontiac-Renfrew is currently addressing town or community councils from the eight affected municipalities, four in Ontario and four in Quebec. The presentations explain the economic benefits of community ownership from a local perspective and the region at large. The Quebec municipalities include Litchfield, Clarendon, Bristol and Portage. In Ontario, the line runs through the municipalities of Pembroke, Laurentian Valley, Whitewater and Ottawa (primarily West Carleton). Direct and indirect job creation will be realized as downsized resourcebased industries begin to ramp up, says TPR. While partnerships and special arrangements with trucking companies can assist economic growth locally and

regionally through initiatives such as truck-rail reload centres, choosing rail for long distance hauling will reduce the volume of trucks on highway infrastructure. Rail is also environmentally preferable particularly over long distances with lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per ton shipped, says TPR. Maintaining rail service will be a key element in sustaining and helping rejuvenate the economic fabric of both Pontiac and Renfrew Counties. “One of the benefits of an efficient freight service is its attractiveness to new business or industry interested in setting up shop in our area,” says Gibeau. “The pending passenger service including commuter and tourist initiatives will be an incredible asset as well – and that in itself will be very exciting.” But for now, TPR is busy bringing area municipalities up to speed and securing their continued support as the acquisition process continues.

It’s appearing more and more likely that the CN rail line through the Upper Ottawa Valley will be saved. And that bodes well for Arnprior, as the line has a spur link to the town. The possibility of a revival of train service for several Upper Ottawa Valley communities, including Arnprior, was noted with interest at the Arnprior downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA) annual meeting Tuesday. New BIA chair Chantal Beaulieu said former Arnprior mayor Terry Gibeau, who is co-chair of the Transport Pontiac-Renfrew (TPR), is optimist the rail service will be in place sometime next year. Municipal councils along the line, including most recently Whitewater Region and Pembroke, have been jumping on board, passing motions giving TPR the authority to use the rail lines in their areas for a community-owned railway. “Because the rail line will be community owned, applicable municipalities through which the line runs must

Two major McNab-Braeside Township positions have been filled. Ken Walton, former deputy fire chief, is the new chief of the volunteer department, council announced at the March 1 meeting. Mayor Mary Campbell expressed her congratulations to Walton, a professional firefighter who has been acting chief since the retirement of Rob Dodge, who stepped down at the end of January. “We’re so very lucky in this township to have that talent on which we can draw,” said Campbell. Geoff Patterson has been selected as the new part-time recreation director for the township. Patterson has a wealth of experience, said Campbell, including as a past programmer for the City of Pembroke and work on improving the city’s waterfront. Council heard he has experience working with media and using social networking sites for programming and event promotion. “He’ll be a real asset to the township,” said Campbell. Walton takes over immediately as fire chief while Patterson’s start date is April 1. The position has been filled on an interim basis for most of the last year by former recreation director Ryan Marcellus. Both Walton and Patterson will be invited to an upcoming meeting to be introduced to council.

FIRE RESCUE McNab-Braeside Council is getting its ducks in order after learning the Arnprior Fire Department will no longer be providing ice and water rescue services to neighbouring municipalities. “I suggest we be prepared as a council,” said Campbell. Council has asked the fire committee to examine the issue and come back with a recommendation.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is asking McNab-Braeside council to provide $2,000 this year to help look after Gillies Grove. Conservation biologist Brenda Van Sleeuwen made the plea at council’s Feb. 15 meeting. Arnprior council has already indicated it will contribute $2,000. The request will be discussed during McNab-Braeside council budget deliberations, although it was noted there is still money available in a fund township residents donated to for the saving and maintaining of the Grove. Mayor Mary Campbell also asked if township staff could do some of the needed tasks in the less than one-third of the Grove that is in the township. Van Sleeuwen explained the NCC is being guided by a fiveyear Gillies Grove management plan that is due for updating in 2013. Community partnerships, including working with the two municipalities, are a key element of the plan, she noted. The plan’s goal is to protect and

Flat Rapids Road will have a paved shoulder, says Mayor Mary Campbell, it’s just going to take a bit of time. While the first part of the road has been completed, there is still work to be done on the rest. The paved shoulder will not be laid until the full road has been paved. In providing an update on the ongoing road reconstruction, Campbell explained that halfmetre paved shoulder will be created on each side of the roadway in the next phase of the project. The half-metre shoulder on the county road is a pilot project, explained Campbell, as usual shoulders are larger. However, the specifications for Flat Rapids Road do not require a shoulder but the nearby public requested it for recreational purposes. “If during this time it is determined it’s not sufficient for recreational use,” said Campbell, “they will reconsider.”

perpetrate the old-growth forest in the Grove. While improving trails, discouraging litter and preventing incursion of invasive species are some of the main initiatives, there is also a need to fall hazardous trees near private homes surrounding the property, she said. VanSleeuwen reported this year’s maintenance budget will be $8,600, with the NCC hoping partners will share in that cost. Campbell suggested the township’s public works crew could take down hazardous trees in the Division and Hay street areas. Perhaps Renfrew County’s weed inspector could help in the battle against invasive species, she added. “That could be one of the partnerships you’ve been talking about.” She noted that if councillors allocate taxpayers’ money to the cause, they will be asked about the donated money still left over from the Save-the-Grove campaign. Van Sleeuwen said that the revived Land Conservancy Association has its own projects for that money, reported to be about $40,000.

The White Pine Festival, which is set for Aug. 26-28, will receive $24,414. Festival organizers will discuss how to use the money, but stress it is mandated to go to additions to the festival and doesn’t negate the need for the various local fundraising efforts. The Arnprior and McNab-Braeside Archives have several initiatives on the go, including promoting online research and ancestry information and attracting more interest from students. And they’re doing it without a budget increase this year, McNab-Braeside council was told Feb. 15. Archives board president John Smith and treasurer Art Turnewitsch updated council on the institution’s activities and presented the proposed 2011 budget. Smith reported the amount of the Archives materials available for residents to access online through www.adarchives. org is growing. The new online search facility was showcased at the Archives annual meeting Feb. 19. At that gathering, Lesley Anderson demonstrated the Ancestry.ca service, which is available at the Arnprior library One of the main recreational pursuits of seniors is genealogy, noted Smith.

Lesley Anderson conducts a how-to session on using Ancestry.ca to a packed house at the Arnprior and McNabBraeside Archives’ annual general meeting Feb. 19. He added there is interest by youth too, as a session at the Archives last year for high school students was a big success and will likely be repeated this year. He reported that the Archives have 31 active volunteers, 17 from Arnprior, 11 from McNab-Braeside and three from other areas. Turnewitsch confirmed the Archives is not asking for an increase in financial support from either McNab-Braeside or Arn-

prior this year. “We don’t expect any major programs or disasters,” he said. McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell commended the board for is frugality and volunteer work, noting council had agreed early in its previous term to a three per cent annual increase in the township’s grant to the Archives. Heritage is key to the core values of the township, she added. “Heritage is very much a part of who we are.”

The provincial news release also notes the government has proposed changes to Ontario liquor laws that would remove beer tent barriers at festivals. “This would provide Ontarians with a more enjoyable experience at local events - enabling them to move freely with a beverage to participate in all the activities on site,” says the release. The White Pine Festival is proposing a beer tent with country music entertainment. Other changes to Ontario liquor laws include extending hours of special events from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. For more on the White Pine Festival, see www.arnpriorwhitepinefestival.ca.

farming business, Reaburn says it’s no mystery why he became a farmer. “I didn’t have any relatives that weren’t farmers … so I didn’t have much choice.” In the induction ceremony, Reaburn was recognized for bringing innovation, consistency and critical thinking to the farm. Reaburn has kept daily weather records for Eastern Ontario Soil and Crop for 25 years, and he is well known for growing a variety of crops. Often the first to try some, he experimented with hulless oats, white beans and food grade peas (which he chose not to continue) and with the likes of canola and IP soybeans (which have become mainstream crops). He was also an early user of GPS units to gain more accuracy for planting, spraying and fertilizing. MPP John Yakabuski participated in the induction ceremony by offering supportive comments for all of the inductees. He read the certificates of recognition provided by MP Cheryl Gallant. The certificates’ words included reference to how the involvement and wisdom of the inductees is so well known in the agricultural community. The crowd included eight previously-inducted wall-of-fame members: Terry O’Gorman, Gordon White, Glen Smith, David Reid, Clarence McBride, Mac Coughlin, Jack Campbell and Ray Pender. The next wall of fame induction ceremony is scheduled for 2014.

The McLarens were saluted for their working and community history that began as a couple in the 1950s. In 1957, Jack became the youngest dealer hired in Canada by Surge Milking Machine Company. He noted, in the couple’s acceptance speech, that the family connection with Surge Milking (since renamed Westfalia) would be 54 years old this week. The McLarens retired from farming in 1994, but their four children remain involved in the agricultural business. One of the most eventful chapters of the McLarens’ history on the agricultural front was the opening of a new business in 1972 that hired 27 men for construction and equipment installations. This work was marked by the building of many barns in the region. The McLarens were also recognized out for their volunteer work. “We have enjoyed our community involvement and the many friends we’ve made over the years,” said Jack. It was a fine time to put farmers on a pedestal. A crowd of more than 185 people gathered at the Renfrew Armouries Saturday to recognize the Renfrew County Agricultural Wall of Fame’s newest members. This year, the inductees were McGregor’s Produce of McNab-Braeside, Janice and Jack McLaren of Cobden, and Larry Reaburn of Beachburg. Lynn Clelland highlighted many of the highlights of McGregor’s Produce, which was nominated by the Arnprior Federation of Agriculture and Renfrew South District Women’s Institute. The company grew out of its acreage on Glen Roy Farms. Steve and Noreen purchased the farm from his parents in 1956, and the family connection to the farm continued when Jim and Ann McGregor joined the operation in 1977 after being lured away from teaching jobs in Oshawa. “When your roots are on the farm, the farm draws you,” said Jim. Family growth also came from family experience, as McGregor’s Produce has become a mainstay on the Renfrew County farming scene. “Before the 100-mile diet changed from fad to fact, and before buying local became the slogan of the ‘green’ movement, the McGregors were providing fresh, economical seasonal produce in and around their community,” said Clelland. “Through all the changes in technology and marketing practices,” she added, “their goal is to maintain their values of producing high quality, great-tasting fruit and vegetables while keeping their carbon footprint as small as possible.” Members of the family business have also been steeped in volunteer community work, a component of McGregor’s Produce that Jim McGregor is particularly proud of. “I guess it’s our effort toward the community (that I’m most proud of),” said Jim of the family business’s community involvements that are many. Roll up the garbage

A special role model The death Friday of former McNab-Braeside councillor and super volunteer Andy Dunlop had many people reminiscing fondly about a time when parents turned out in large numbers to ensure their children had plenty of recreational opportunities. As his children grew up, Dunlop was a leader in the White Lake area when it came to organizing recreational activities and improving and maintaining facilities. That involvement was extraordinary considering he was also a valued member of several adult organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, Arnprior Legion and Arnprior Lions. If anyone had an excuse to not be involved in youth activities because of his many other community pursuits, it was Dunlop. But not Andy. When someone was needed for youth ball or hockey or down at the White Lake diamond and rink, he was always one of the first in line. And he had plenty of company 20 or 30 years ago. Unfortunately, that’s rarely the case these days. That’s why he became so frustrated as youth programming faltered and vandals threatened to take over once-busy facilities such as the White Lake rink and Braeside RA Centre. It got so bad he suggested the township shouldn’t put another penny into some of the facilities unless community members stepped up to operate and protect them. While it was a startling stance for someone who was so supportive of youth recreation, Dunlop’s words rang true. If the community really values its recreational facilities, the next generation has to mount its own grassroots effort on their behalf. Society has changed too much to expect the same type of involvement common 30 years ago. However, municipal and community leaders need to work out ways to engage the new generation and encourage the passing of the torch, as Mayor Mary Campbell puts it. If they’re looking for a role model to inspire community involvement, they need not look too far. Just remember the many achievements of Andy Dunlop.

Care coach much more than a quasi-taxi service To the editor: Re. Seniors group coaches town on getting money from governments. This letter is in response to an article written by Derek Dunn in the March 3 Chronicle-Guide in regards to a presentation made to Arnprior Council during budget deliberations. I would like to correct a couple of factual errors in the article. The presentation before Arnprior Town Council was to encourage them to investigate the Provincial Public Transportation Dedicated Gas Tax Program that was initiated through the Ministry of Transportation through the Province of Ontario, not the Federal Government. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation provides the Gas Tax Rebate for Specialized Transportation programs, which provide funds aimed at subsi-

Continued from Page 8 That is the way democracy works! Having said this, I also have an opinion about the statements made by Mr. Russ Corbett with reference to the Gillies Grove. My opinion is favourable towards his position, i.e. taxpayer money should not be given to private property owners regardless of what that piece of property is, or is not. Granting taxpayers money to private initiatives is indeed, a slippery slope! Once done, everyone will want equal treatment. If the Nature Conservancy of Canada, cannot manage the property that it owns, perhaps it ought to turn it over to municipal authorities. Then, and only then, should our tax dollars go towards its maintenance. Thomas Charbonneau Arnprior

Calling for a more acceptable cellphone policy at ADHS COLE GORDON

ADHS Co-op student

Is the administration going too far by banning the use of cellphones at Arnprior District High School? Not just in the classroom but in the halls and in the cafeteria as well. This is an interesting topic that has been disputed for quite some time. When I was given this assignment, I was interested to find out more about the issue from both sides. To start off my research, I found out why the rule is in place. As the school’s policy states: “Cellphones can distract a student/staff in a learning environment. Cell phones can be used for negative reasons and cell phones can compromise people’s privacy.” Cellphones can be used for bullying or even taking photos in changing rooms. Many schools, however, have already removed

‘no-cellphones-allowed’ signs to promote proper use of the devices. So I hit the hallways to ask staff members and students about the rule. To my surprise, it seems a majority of both disagree with the policy. Most say cellphones should be allowed to be used between classes and at lunch but not inside the classroom. “I understand where the school is coming from. However, I don’t see the problem with phones being used in the halls,” said teacher Jim Anas. “Cell phones are a part of everyday life and that needs to be recognized. This coming from a guy who doesn’t own a phone or even know how to text,” said teacher Gord Sadler. However, there is more to it than just allowing students to text in the halls. There is also the issue of other students’ privacy, since most cell phone aren’t just

phones, they also have camera capabilities (strangely, there is no ban against cameras in the school). Is the administration trying to protect people who don’t want protection? When I brought up this issue to staff and students, most understood the problem but didn’t think it should be a major factor. “Inappropriate use of a phone should be dealt with individually” said Gord Sadler. “One person shouldn’t ruin it for the bunch.” “If you are sent a harassing message, you can show a principal, so you have solid evidence of the harassment, rather then if a student were to just say they had been verbally bullied, so more serious action can be taken,” said student Morgan Buch. When I was researching the school’s policy. I found that it is stated: “Use of electronic devices is prohibited on ADHS

property. Cell phones are to be turned off when entering the building.” This rule is also posted at the entrance of the high school. However, when I was meeting with a member of the administration their cell phone went off. It appears the administration is either unwilling or uninterested in enforcing the rule. This lack of enforcement could make people wonder what other rules could be broken. We shouldn’t have rules in place if they are not going to be enforced and a majority of people aren’t going to abide by them. Perhaps it’s about time the rule was revised. After all, technology is advancing and times are changing, so our rules need to change and adapt with them. Or maybe if the administration is unsure of changing the rule, they should take a survey, since we live in a democratic society.

HERDING UP FOR THE FARM SHOW

Learn to take good photos from Clicks Gone Wild Tired of blurry, out-of-focus photos? A pair of local photographers who know how to click with confidence are here to help camera owners how to unleash the power of their digital cameras. Gemma Robillard of Gem Photography and Rhonda McMaster of Rhonda McMaster Photography are teaming up to teach the basics of digital photography to Valley residents. They are both passionate photog moms with their own businesses offering their professional custom photography services. After hearing many of their friends and acquaintances express frustrations with getting decent pictures from their digital cameras, they thought all these people need is just a few key tips and tricks to take their every day photos from just a snapshot to something special. That’s when the stay-at-home-moms decided to merge their talents and enthusiasm, and Clicks Gone Wild was born. Robillard, a Burnstown-area resident, has been a writer/photographer for the past 10 years and has spent the last five learning as much as she can about her camera and the art of photography. “I taught myself to step out of the green box (auto mode) a long time ago and that alone changed my images for the better. Now I’m excited to have the opportunity to teach others why it’s good to know what all those settings and functions mean in an easy to understand manner.” McMaster lives across the highway in Braeside and brings the teaching background to the duo. A qualified teacher with a lifelong interest in photography, she has taken several photography courses to enhance her natural abilities. “I’m excited to combine a passion of mine with teaching. We’re very lucky are to be able to

provide a friendly, supportive environment to learn. It’s perfect fit for both of us.” Much of their own learning has been self-directed, but they recognize that many people in their area are looking for handson, more personal approach to getting better pictures. Their beginner course, Mastering the Basics, Part 1: Camera Features and Composition starts off with topics all camera owners should know – learning all of the various settings, and the appropriate circumstances to use each one, along with composition. It is perfect for anyone who is stuck on Auto Mode with either a point and shoot camera or a digital SLR. “We pack a lot of information and sample images into this two hour class, think of this as your talking manual,” says Robillard. Our goal is to keep the class sizes small so we can give our participants as much help as possible navigating their menus. “We’ve set it up to have each course run with a minimum of six people, up to a maximum of eight,” McMaster comments. Mastering the Basics, Part 2 is in the works as well and will touch on white balance, file organization, printing options and creative posing ideas. They are offering Mastering the Basics, Part 1 in two different time slots on March 26, at the Arnprior Public Library. The first class runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then the second group begins at 12:30 p.m. and runs to 2:30 p.m. On April 12, another session of Mastering the Basics, Part 1 will run at the Burnstown United Church from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. For news and more upcoming class dates, visit the Clicks at www.clicksgonewild.blogspot. com. MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

As it has done so many times in the past, March has come staggering in. Despite heroic attempts to keep its icy grip on the land, winter is assuredly on its way out. The days grow longer and the sun, even on cold days, burns more intensely. You can feel the touch of spring in its warmth. Animals are also telling us that winter is abating. During the recent surge of warm southern air, Raccoons awoke from their lethargic trance and wandered in search of food. Unfortunately, many inexperienced in the ways of cars fail to navigate their way across highways. With the warm air came the return of birds from southern retreats. Red-winged Blackbirds have already arrived just to the south of us. For many, the sight of these birds sitting atop cattail stalks, their flaming red epaulets thrown forward for the world to see are sure signs that spring has arrived. Their raspy declarations of territory proprietorship, while admittedly not

the most musical of songs, are full of energy and intent. Over the ensuing weeks, Red-winged Blackbirds will invade all of our local wetlands. As their numbers swell, every bit of wet habitat, ranging from extensive cattail marshes that adorn the edges of the Mississippi and Ottawa rivers to roadside ditches will be occupied. From the time they arrive the blackbirds sing away much of the day. However, for the first couple of weeks their songs fall only onto the ears of rival males and humans; female Red-winged Blackbirds will be noticeably absent. Eventually, the females with their sombre coats of streaked brown feathers will arrive. By the time they do, winter’s grasp will have been reduced to the lightest of touches. The differential arrival of the sexes is not by chance. Female Red-winged Blackbirds, as is the case of most songbirds, take no interest in claiming or defending real estate. They leave these tasks to the flamboyant males. A piece of prime habitat

usually results in a male attaining not one but a harem of females, so it is particularly important for a male to return as early as he can in order to claim the best quality territory. So even though cold temperatures can make life uncomfortable, the males are driven to return as early as possible. The larger, older, and more dominant males generally attain the best quality habitat. When the females return, the males that sing the greatest variety of quality songs are the ones that attract the most attention. This makes sense for if the quality of song reflects a male’s stature, then a good singer must hold a quality territory. A quality territory holds more food resources, an important consideration for the females who feed their babies without any assistance from their male. While for some species the early bird might get the worm, in the case of Red-winged Blackbirds the early bird usually gives the sperm!

Cougar debate continues Ontarians aren’t buying it. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report is maintaining that the Eastern Cougar is extinct. However, officials at Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources say they believe there have been enough signs spotted to conclude the animal is still around.

However, it is illusive and MNR attempts to photograph a cougar have so far failed. There were several sightings of what was thought to be a cougar in the area of the Madawaska Golf Course last year. However, it is now thought the animal seen is a large hybrid cat.

Arnprior rider second at provincial snowboard event Chanelle Fortin of Arnprior District High School won a silver medal March 4 at the OFSAA snowboarding festival. Fortin posted the fastest giant slalom run of the girls’ competition at the Ontario high school championship and was fifth in the slalom to place second overall in the combined standings. Arnprior narrowly missed a spot on the girls’ team podium by three placement points as Amanda Milne (13th), Amy Furgoch (53rd) and Bethany Rampton (87th) also put in solid performances. The girls finished fifth overall with Evan Campbell led the Arnprior boys’ ‘A’ team of Dave Cobus (24th), Cameron Dodge (29th), John Leslie (34th) and Tyler Power (98th) to a fourth-place result in the team event. Another Valley ‘boarder, Jason Fleury of RCI, came first. Chris Stack, Phil Murphy, Dave Fingland, Brandon Racine and Derek Gray also represented Arnprior at the competition held at Camp Fortune in Chelsea, Que. The ‘B’ team finished 16th overall with Stack 28th, Murphy 65th, Fingland 78th, Racine 80th and Gray 112th. Fortin recovered from near disaster near the top of the course on her first run with an unbeatable second run to pull her from fifth to second. Krista Petrie-Wallace and

Photo by Dan Plouffe Karen Dodds of ADHS were the lead organizers of the event that marked the first time the OFSAA provincial high school snowboard festival was held outside of southern Ontario. Almost 300 student-athletes from 42 schools and eight as-

sociations across the province competed for the championship title. There were 22 girls and 23 boys teams. The snowboarders had to complete two giant salmon runs on the mountain for the fastest combined individual and team

times. The strong showing by the ADHS snowboarders came on the heels of an excellent showing at the Eastern Ontario Snowboard Championships. At EOSSA, the ADHS snowboarding club had Chanelle Fortin first, Dave Cobus third, the girls team second and the boys teams first and third.

Liz Orenstein finished eighth overall in Giant Slalom in Level 1 girls competition. Orenstein was 10th after the first run of the Slalom but fell on the second run and didn’t place. Mitch Bott finished 11th overall in Slalom in Level 2 boys competition and seventh overall in the Giant Slalom Level 2 boys competition. Level 1 racers are high school trained only and Level 2 racers have had extra club racing training.

For the first time in recent memory, Arnprior District High School hosted the Eastern Ontario girls ice hockey championship. It’s also the first time in a while that ADHS has qualified for the EOSSA tournament. ADHS coach and tournament organizer Ryan Mckenna welcomed eight teams to the Nick Smith Centre Tuesday.

ADHS lost its games 6-3 to LaSalle of Kingston and 4-1 to LaCitadelle of Cornwall. Carleton Place won the other side of the pool with wins over St. Michael’s of Kemptville (5-0) and Casselman (3-0) LaCitadelle eked out a 2-1 overtime thriller over Carleton Place in the championship game marked by strong skating and excellent goaltending.

The Arnprior Packers shook off a heartbreaking first game home loss to the Renfrew Timberwolves by dumping their rivals 5-2 Tuesday. The win in Renfrew knots the best-of-seven Junior B hockey Valley Division final at one game apiece. Fresh off their six-game conquering of the Almonte Thunder in the opening round of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs, the Arnprior Packers were back in the thick of battle Sunday night at the Nick Smith Centre. After coming back from a 2-0 deficit, the Packers lost the opener 3-2 when Renfrew scored with 3.2 seconds left. However, paced by a Mitch Melanson hat trick, the Packers posted a 5-2 win at Renfrew’s Ma-TeWay Activity Centre Tuesday to pull even in the series. Teddy Suckow and Stephen Baylis added singles in the Packers victory. Jesse Riopelle and Patrice Wren answered for Renfrew. The Wolves connected on a two-man advantage

Arnprior’s Colin Bradbury dives to block a shot by Renfrew Timberwolf Jesse Riopelle during the dying minutes of regulation play Sunday night at the Nick Smith Centre. In a thrilling game, with plenty of passionate spectators, the Wolves snatched victory with three seconds remaining on the clock in the first game of the Valley Division final. to cut a 2-0 deficit in half with just one tick left in the second period. But the Packers came out in the third, showed discipline, and connected for two early goals before Melanson completed his hat trick to turn this one into a comfortable victory for Arnprior. German Tsatsura had 31 saves for Arnprior and Richard Barr 23 stops for Renfrew. RENFREW 3, PACKERS 2 The Packers lost a tough

one in the series curtain raiser Sunday. After clawing back from a 2-0 deficit, Arnprior fell victim to the Timberwolves in the opening game of their Valley Division championship series. Renfrew’s Jimmy MacMillan notched his second goal of the night with just 3.2 seconds showing on the clock to give the Timberwolves at 3-2 victory. MacMillan also scored in the opening period, as did Lucas Gonu to give Renfrew a 2-0 lead.

But the Packers answered in the second period when Taylor Collins beat Renfrew netminder Richard Barr on the open side after 61 seconds. Arnprior drew even as Teddy Suckow snapped a close-in drive home on a power-play with 4:51 left in the third period to bring many in the good-sized crowd to their feet. However, the Packers got hemmed in their own zone in the final seconds, and the puck found its way to MacMillan and behind

German Tsatsura before time could run out. Tsatsura faced 32 Renfrew shots on the night while the Packers tested Barr 26 times. Arnprior fired 13 drives in the third period. Coach and general manager Bill Griese said in the third period, his team began to answer the challenge. “Renfrew’s forwards can be overwhelming at times. Our goalie (Tsatsura) played well or it would have been a runaway,” the coach observed. “It was almost like we had to have our noses pushed in for 40 minutes. We were on more of a level field in the third period.” Griese said it came down to which team made the last play wins. “They made it. We had some chances but Barr made a couple of big saves.” PACKERS 5, ALMONTE 2 The Packers advanced to the final on the strength of a solid 5-2 triumph over the Almonte Thunder in the Lanark County town last Wednesday night.

Michael Byrne’s first goal of the series late in the second period broke a 2-2 deadlock and the Packers never looked back. The Packers held their one-goal advantage throughout the third period until the last two minutes when empty net goals from Marc Vacher and Braedon Moffatt sealed the game-six victory. Mitch Melanson gave Arnprior a 2-0 edge in the opening stanza with goals 1:11 apart before Storm Carisse counted two of his own to pull Almonte even. Those would be the only pucks among the 26 shots the Thunder would get behind Tsatsura. The Packers kept Almonte netminder Morgan Barr alert with 47 shots. The Valley Division final resumed Wednesday in Arnprior (after press deadlines), with game four in Renfrew Friday at 8 p.m. Remaining games, if necessary, are Sunday in Arnprior at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 16 in Renfrew at 7:30 p.m. and game seven on Arnprior ice Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m.

Arnprior native Doug Derraugh has been voted by his peers as the 2011 ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year. Derraugh has guided the Cornell women’s hockey team to a number two national ranking, its second straight ECAC Hockey and Ivy League championship, and the top seed in the ECAC Hockey tournament. The Cornell team will be vying for the NCAA championship starting at 2 p.m. this Saturday, March 12 in its home rink. Derraugh, who is in his sixth year behind the Cornell bench, has led his Big Red squad to a 20-1-1 record in the league this season, winning its first 16 league games and clinching the regular-season championship Feb. 5 with a win at St. Lawrence. The Big Red has been ranked either first or second throughout the entire season, with the number-one ranking a first for the Cornell women’s hockey program. Last season, Derraugh was a finalist for the award, and ultimately was named the AHCA Division I Coach of the Year after leading the Big Red to the national championship game, where Cornell fell in triple overtime to Minnesota-Duluth. Cornell leads the league in scoring offense, scoring defense, power-play efficiency and penalty-killing percentage. Derraugh has dramatically turned the Cornell women’s hockey program around in his six years. He is a 1991 alumnus of Cornell, which

Rawn is missed, but Castleford fish derby still shines STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Larry Rawn was a tireless volunteer who led by example. He helped the Castleford Charity Ice Fishing Derby that was resurrected six years ago reach a record registration of more than 800 people last year. Then Rawn, who worked at Sandvik in Arnprior, lost his life. Seeking to save a swimmer on the Bonnechere River last year, he came to the rescue, then drowned before he could reach shore. For Don Storie, another key organizer of the derby, it was hard to lose his friend. Asked what he misses most of Rawn, Storie mouths the word “camaraderie” before becoming choked up and unable to continue the sentence. Moments later, he says he has lost a close friend who was one of his fishing and hunting buddies. Vern Barr, who has succeeded Rawn as derby president, says the group will miss Rawn’s organizational skills and ability to get things done. Another derby organizer and close friend of Rawn’s, Val Miller, was at the Horton Community Centre Saturday afternoon helping to organize the drawprize winners. Taking a moment away from working with fellow volunteers, she said, “This is tough, tough, tough. This time of the year he’d usually be over at my house two or three times a day.” She chuckles at how Rawn would regularly check up on how derby preparations were going, but she’ll mostly miss his enthusiasm.

“He was on top of everything all the time,” she says, standing next to the new Larry Rawn Memorial Trophy. That trophy now goes to the fish derby registrant catching the biggest fish each year. The large trophy is an echo of Rawn’s life. A camouflage handkerchief, like the one worn by pallbearers at his funeral, is tied around the neck of the trophy. The trophy also features a photo of Rawn wearing a hunting shirt and driving his pontoon boat The first recipient of the Larry Rawn Memorial Trophy was Terry Nicholas of Arnprior with an 11-pound, eight-ounce pike. He also received $300 in cash. Rawn’s wife, Ann, presented the trophy that was donated by Sandvik’s CAW local 2228 in Arnprior, where Rawn worked for more than 20 years. “Larry had a passion for helping people, and thanks to the wonderful communities we call home, the derby was a great success,” said Mosley. Despite rain most of Saturday, the derby on the Ottawa River attracted 570 registrants, who caught a 94 fish, up from last year’s total. The event also attracted more than than 100 sponsors. “The support was tremendous,” said Storie. The derby’s reputation continues as thousands of dollars go to charitable causes each year. Storie practically shakes his head at the positive nature of sponsorship interest. One Renfrew business sponsor, for example, dropped off a cheque with an attached note that said: “Thanks for letting us be part of your derby.”

WENDY MAYHEW

Arnprior Amateur Wrestling Club

Arnprior District High School wrestlers headed to Sudbury March 3 to attend OFSAA. There were 840 wrestlers in 28 weight categories from high schools all across the province for the Ontario championship. The wrestling tournament is known for having the majority of wrestlers competing from Grades 11 and 12 with a few from Grades 9 and 10. Wrestlers compete against other wrestlers of the same weight but not always the same age. The first wrestler up for Arnprior was Tyler Pike, who is a Grade 10 student. Tyler lost both his matches but came close to winning one and was able to score points against his last opponent. Last year Tyler was

unable to score points, so this year was a great improvement in his wrestling skills. Second up was Darren Mayhew, a Grade 9 student. His first match was against the 2010 OFSAA champion and friend from Oakville. Darren was able to score points against Zack but was unable to win the match. Zach eventually won the weight class the next day. Darren was able to win his next two matches and the second win was done so in the last seconds of the round. His next match was a mustwin to continue to the next day of competition, but Darren came up against a slightly stronger competitor and lost, which gave him a 13th-place finish out of 37 wrestlers in his weight class. Rebecca Dolan, a Grade 10 student competing in her second OFSAA, showed a new confi-

dence in her wrestling, having three matches this year compared to two last year. She lost her first match but came back with a very strong win in her second. Rebecca’s third match was against a girl from Renfrew whom Rebecca had beaten two weeks earlier, but his time Karen was able to come out on top, which shows wrestlers that each match is different and there are no guarantees they will always win or lose against a competitor from past matches. Jesse Andrews, a Grade 12 student in his first wrestling OFSAA, was next to wrestle. He lost his first match but won his next three. On the third match, he quickly pinned his opponent which put him into the next competition. His match Friday morning was against a wrestler of equal

Grove renovations earn praise from residents, staff SHERRY HAAIMA

sherry.haaima@metroland.com

More than 60 people call the The Grove retirement centre home and work done over the past months has made it considerably cozier for residents of the facility. Director of care Patti McLean says clients and staff are appreciative of the changes, which include completion of the two tub rooms, refinishing cement walls and other work around the nursing home. The Grove’s two renovated tub rooms are garnering rave reviews from residents. New floors, tiles and heaters have provided a more spa-like atmosphere. “The residents are really pleased with them,” says McLean. A new lift machine helps lift residents in and out so it’s saving on the backs of the people who work here, said McLean. One of the biggest changes is the refinishing of the cement walls in the hallway. “They were redone, dry-walled, painted and decorated,” says McLean, who added the change provided a less clinical atmosphere. In the Grove’s secure unit, the doors have been painted to look like bookshelves – a method of keeping patients with dementia from wandering away from the unit while

Grove Nursing Home director of care Patti McLean says the newly redone tub rooms are appreciated by residents and staff. Photo by Sherry Haaima still offering a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Another more recent addition to the nursing home is a wellness centre for workers who might need to rest or relax. The Grove also has respite rooms, booked through Community Care Access Centre, that provide care givers with a temporary break from their duties. The service, which includes meals, nursing care and the room, is provided for around $35 per day, is praised by those who use it, says McLean.

The respite rooms are booked only 50 to 60 per cent of the time, so there’s certainly space for clients considering trying it out. “We’d like it be used more often,” says McLean. So what’s on the wish list for the Grove heading into the future? In keeping with a provincial move towards pleasurable dining, residents could use more space in the dining room. And there’s a need to increase storage, says McLean.

shared by McNab-Braeside, Admaston-Bromley and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Finishing touches include the installation of two free public WiFi sites – one at the McNab-Braeside Township office and one at the Douglas Public Library. Additional work includes extension of the planned DSL high-speed services at no additional cost to the project, final outreach and awareness activity, concluding ceremonies and a final report. There were some areas that proved not feasible to connect, including an area of Deerfield Drive looking for the service, explained Parker. “There were some areas the township very much wanted to service that Bell didn’t feel was economical,” he said. One of the options for residents in unserviced areas has been a turbo stick or what’s known as HSPA (high speed packet access), said Parker. The only problem with this system is that a home mustn’t be blocked by a hill

The completion of the Rural Connections Broadband Project is just around the corner and by all accounts it’s been a mostly successful venture with some 1,840 more Renfrew County homes now connected to high-speed Internet. Bruce Parker, project manager, updated McNabBraeside Council March 1, outlining what’s been done since the project was awarded to Bell Aliant in 2009. Six high-speed locations have been turned on since then, including the Russett Drive, Sand Point Road, White Lake, Braeside, Burnstown and Douglas areas. “By the end of 2010, all of the six locations had been turned on and were working well,” said Parker who indicated the project is in its final stages. A total of $815,000 was spent on installation of the DSL/ wireless high-speed connection, said Parker, with 11 kilometres of fibre optic cable installed. The project funding was

or dense foliage, he added. There are some people in serviced areas, too, who were unable to access the service up to this point. Braeside and Flat Rapids connections filled up quite quickly, said Parker. “The subscription rate in a couple of areas was better than expected,” he said. There was at least one case where someone had purchased a home-based connection on the basis that neighbours on each side had access to highspeed, but it turned out because the system was at full capacity the individual will have to wait for a customer to leave before they can sign up. The remaining work to be done this month and next should fix the problem. “That should all be resolved when the new services go live at the end of March and the end of April,” said Parker. HSPAs are less expensive to install, maintain and upgrade, he added. “The entire 17 corridor is served by it at this point, but it can be spotty,” he said.

Royal Wood worked in a bookstore and record store, but those weren’t the best ways to finance his budding career as a musician. However, he landed a job as a foreign exchange trader that financed the first three years of his music career. Now a songwriter nominee for a 2011 Juno Award, he grew up in a close-knit family of five children and two parents in Lakefield, Ont., just outside Peterborough, where he began playing several instruments at a young age. “I was a fortunate kid who found out what brought me joy,” says Wood, 32, who began playing the piano at age four, just because he could, not because his parents made him. He excelled as a high school student before heading off to McGill in the late 1990s, but he never finished university. “It was an incredible scene, living there (in Montreal). My only problem was my French wasn’t conducive to developing a musical career there.” But he found Toronto,

The turbulence included the loss of two special grandparents. He hasn’t been to Burnstown yet, but there and elsewhere he says his songs will be performed “from a very personal place, a very introspective place. I don’t play music because I want to be an entertainer and feel called upon to create something. But it’s the creating that I enjoy the most.” One of his favourite songs is On Top of Your Love, which talks about the inability to be together when apart. Recently married, he says, those feelings happen when you have a career that takes you many kilometres from the one you love. As the song says: You scare me half to death But you bring on my best The worst I haven’t seen But give it all to me. With his performance at Neat Coffee Shop, Wood says, “I hope they’re moved. and Toronto found him. “Finally, once the music was a blossoming career and paying all my bills, I got out of the office job,” he says. After leaving that job as a foreign exchange trader in 2007, the full-time singer-songwriter continues to share his memories and experiences, good and bad, while playing a multitude of instruments. He’ll play guitar and piano at Burnstown’s Neat Coffee Shop School House Stage on Friday, March 11. The $20 tickets were close to sold out early this week. Stops this month, during his The Root Of It All Tour, include New York City, where he plays once a month, as well as Sudbury, Toronto, Collingwood, Stratford and St. Catharines. His songs in Burnstown will include selections from his new and third album, The Waiting. Its songs include You Can’t Go Back. “I went through so many severe shifts personally, and all of that turbulence led to serious thought and reflection,” says Wood. “That is why these songs were born and why they are my most personal and introspective to date.”

Pet obesity increasing in Canada You’ve probably heard the saying, “If your dog is overweight, so are you.” Well, it turns out, it’s true. The latest numbers from Statistics Canada show that 36 per cent of Canadians meet the criteria for obesity and, according to the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, 35 per cent of Canadian pets do, too. Obesity is defined as 30 per cent above normal weight. Just as with humans, obesity in pets can lead to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, reduced life span (3–5 years) and other health complications. For example, a study by the International Journal of Applied Veterinary Medicine shows that if you feed a small dog one ounce of cheese, it’s the same as you eating one and a half hamburgers or one and a half chocolate bars. For a cat, that same ounce of cheese equals three and a half hamburgers for you. Think of it this way, if Fido gained eight pounds that would be equal to you gaining 30 pounds. According to the APOP

Pet Talk

IAN STUPP (Association for Pet Obesity Prevention) a 90-pound Labrador Retriever is comparable to a 5’4” 186-lb. female and a 15-pound cat is comparable to a 5’9” 254-lb. male. The problem is simple: excessive caloric intake, too many treats and an inactive lifestyle all contribute to pet obesity. Besides reducing food intake, the APOP recommends 30 to 60 minutes of active play, or two to three miles of walking for larger breeds of dogs such as Labradors or German Shepherds. Smaller breeds should have 15 to 30 minutes of play and cats can

benefit from short to 15minutes bursts of activity like chasing toys. The other problem is merchandising. Some pet food bags rate the feedings high. Simply put the more you feed your pet, the faster you will go through a bag, the more you will purchase and the more they will profit. For feeding instructions (based on breed, size, and activity level), speak to your veterinarian, breeder, trainer, behaviourist, etc. Rule of thumb, if you cannot feel your pet’s ribs and they do not have a natural waistline, then they are perhaps overweight. As with human weight loss, it would be best to consult with your veterinarian before making any changes to ones diet or exercise routine. For more information, go to www.petobesityprevention.com. Ian owns and operates Wags & Whiskers Pet Grooming and Puppy Kindergarten at 118 John St. North. For comments or suggestions, he can be reached at 613-623-6200 or info@wagsandwhiskerspg. com.

Galilee has confirmed Nicole Levesque as director and Ken Mansfield as operations manager of the Oblates mission centre and retreat in Arnprior. Reverend J. Roy Boucher, president of Galilee Mission Centre, announced the board of directors has hired Mansfield and made the role permanent for Levesque, who has been interim director since July. As a result of the board’s decision to review and refine the job descriptions, each role has a new focus. Levesque’s mandate is to help build the Galilee community as well as to develop and lead programs and services that support the centre’s key goals. Levesque, who was born in Sudbury, had spent her entire professional life in the Ontario secondary school system. In the early years of her career, she was a teacher and then dean of students at an all-girls’ private high school. For the past 22 years, she served as a chaplain with

We’ve been hard at work organizing our spring programs. Here’s a sneak peak at two of the programs we have coming up for youth this spring. When we held our Learn to ….Fence class last year, we received a lot of requests for a full program. So, for eight weeks starting Tuesday, April 12, we will be offering a fencing program at AJ Charbonneau School. The course is offered thanks to Paul ApSimon of Ottawa Fencing. The program runs from 6-7:15 p.m. for 9-14 year olds and 7:308:45 p.m. for those 15 and up. The cost is $100 for the course. Our popular ball hockey program is back this spring beginning Wednesday, April 20 and running for 10 weeks. This year we have added a Bantam Division to the slate of Novice, Atom and Peewee divisions. Boys and girls are both welcome to play. The cost is $50 and the deadline for registration is April 13. Referees and coaches are needed. Registration will start after the Spring Break. Remember to get your tickets for our St. Patrick’s Day Tween Dance this Friday, March 11, 7-10 p.m. The $5 advance tickets are on sale until today (Thursday) at 9 p.m. If there are any tickets left, they will be on sale at the door for $8. Don’t forget to wear green! And don’t forget to check out the Nick Smith Centre during March Break. We Have Sens vs. Pens Night starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 at a cost of $10. Our cooking program continues Wednesday, March 16 from 1-4 p.m. The cost is $20. And on Friday, March 18, we are headed to Ski Vorlage for a day on the slopes. The cost is $15 with additional charges for any rentals. The bus leaves the Nick Smith Centre at 8:30 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m. Registrations for all of the March Break programs are due the week before. On Wednesday, March 23, we are having our Boys vs. Girls Wii Night. We will be playing Rock Band on our giant screen from 7-9 p.m. Cost is $10. Registrations are due by Wednesday March 16. Registration for all of our programs must be done in person with cash or cheque at the Nick Smith Centre a minimum of one week in advance. If you have any questions about any of our programs, give Kayla or Don a call at 613-623-7301, ext. 34 or e-mail us at kreinert@arnprior.ca.

On Jan. 12, the Burnstown Women’s Institute celebrated its 100th anniversary meeting at the home of Cari Forteath-Wade in Burnstown. It was the exact location of the first BWI meeting held in 1911, then the home of Mrs. M. J. Forrest. The ladies met every third Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. forming the beginning of the Burnstown Women’s Institute. Two WI members, Marlene Schaly and Lillian Trask, delighted members with their acting skills by doing a short play of a buggy ride to the first Burnstown WI meeting in 1911. They then involved all the members in a re-enactment of the first meeting by singing the Maple Leaf Forever, Roll Call (show your favourite item) program ideas and business of the day. Some of the subjects that were on the program were: quotations from Robert Burns, how to get chickens to lay in the winter and community socials. The meeting closed with our Mary Stewart Collect and grace followed by a luncheon of homemade pies and tea. We would like to thank Cari Forteath-Wade for being our guest and letting us have our 100th meeting in her home. All of the members are looking forward to our 100th anniversary celebration that will be held in June at the Burnstown United Church.

Each week we feature animals from the Arnprior and District Humane Society that are up for adoption.

FOOD BANK FRIDAY Three Arnprior businesses have joined in the Rumbly Tummy Giving Circle’s Food Bank Friday campaign. The Cornerstone Dental Group, Mather Insurance, and the Kenwood Kafe and Kenwood Corporate Centre are taking part in gathering food for the food bank each month. The giving circle co-ordinates pick-up on the last Friday of every month and ensures delivery to the Arnprior Food Bank. Other businesses and organizations are welcome to participate too. Involvement can be as unique, individual and creative as each organization decides. A business might tie something fun and meaningful into the day, or it can simply be declared Food Bank Friday and all staff or students or employees can encouraged to voluntarily bring in a contribution item. It can be as big or as small as the individual organization decides. Making the donation from the Cornerstone Dental Group are in front, from left, Sydney Friske, Kaileigh Wright and Jack Friske and in back Susan Johnston and Dr. Tony Veale.

Extend Tire Life Improve Fuel Efficiency • Nitrogen is a dry, inert gas used to inflate airplane tires, off-road truck tires, military vehicle tires, and race car tires for improved performance and safety. During its journey through the tire wall, oxygen oxidizes the rubber compounds in the tire, causing under-inflation and deteriorated rubber. Dry nitrogen helps the tire to run cooler and more safely. Oxygen diffuses through nitrogen the tire much faster oxygen than nitrogen

Benefits of Nitrogen • Enhances safety • Improves fuel efficiency by up to 4% • Extends tire-life by up to 25% • Helps prevent under-inflation • Provides more consistent tire pressure • Reduces rim corrosion Improved Fuel Effieciency Maximize Road Grip & Handling Reduce Heat Buildup • An under-inflated tire operates at high deflection resulting in decreased fuel economy, sluggish handling and may result in excessive mechanical flexing and heat buildup leading to catastrophic tire failure
