Federal election called for May 2 JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
HAIR-RAISER Take a good look at Curtis McGrath’s mop of hair. It’s no longer there. He had his head shaved for a ‘relay’ good cause. It was one of several school happenings last week as students returned from their March Break. 29, 32, 33
It didn’t take long for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke candidates to start campaigning after a federal election was called Saturday. Canadians are going to the polls in the country’s 41st federal election Monday, May 2. Conservative incumbent Cheryl Gallant, her Liberal challenger Christine Tabbert, and Independent candidate (and former MP) Hec Clouthier actively began their fiveweek campaigns on the weekend. Gallant was in Arnprior Saturday attending a breakfast at the Legion, while Tabbert took in a home show in Renfrew and canvassed in Arnprior. The Green Party has nominated economic development advisor Rosanne Van Schie as its candidate while the NDP choose a candidate Saturday. The election call became inevitable when the Conservative minority government fell last Friday, March 25 after MPs voted 156 to 145 in favour of a non-confidence motion. See ‘FOURTH ELECTION’ Page 2

Former Arnprior councillor Eric Burton is expected to be named the New Democratic Party federal candidate for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke this Saturday. As of Wednesday, Burton, 30, was the only declared candidate for the nomination. Party members will gather at the Cobden Agricultural Hall at 3:30 p.m. April 2 to hold their annual meeting and pick a candidate. See ‘FORMER COUNCILLOR’ Page 5

A housing proposal in a densely populated Arnprior neighbourhood met with little resistance at a public meeting held Monday evening. At 128 Mary St., the
playground of the former Alexander Reid school, a plan is in motion to build eight structures, likely 16 housing units. Developer Waldo Hortichuk also plans for an access way from Edey Street. No verbal comments were made at the meeting.
However, a written submission raised concerns over increased traffic in the neighbourhood. Neighbor Link, a nonprofit service group operating from the school, was unaware of the project. It declined comment until its board meets.
