Town staff is cautiously prepared to partner with a group trying to create a new park in Arnprior, but only after numerous private property issues are clarified. Turtle Pond supporters, an ad hoc volunteer group of some 50 residents, want to gentrify brush land between the Madawaska River, Riverwood Estates and Decosta Street. The group has offered to maintain the area and make it safe in exchange for the town designating it part of its park system. The town’s director of public works and engineering, Robin Smith, told councillors at Monday’s meeting that portions of the land are owned by Sandvik Steel Canada, Pillar5, the Town of Arnprior and even the City of Ottawa. Hence, it could not be declared part of the town’s park system.

However, the town might consider an arrangement similar to that of the Macnamara trail where a volunteer group cares for grounds owned by Nylene Canada. The prerequisite is to obtain trespassing agreements with the various owners first, Smith said. However, town CAO Larry Donaldson said liability concerns remain, including a high, steep embankment along Jack Trail. As well, where a future staircase might go just east of the trestle could have liability issues, especially if the town were to promote the area as a tourism destination. He also advised council to look ahead at what may come. “If we market this as a town trail, we could be liable on other parts of the trail,” he said. “Then there’s the issue of: What if the group disbands? What becomes of the trail? Does the town take over?” See ‘TURTLE’ Page 2

JUSTICE PREVAILS Arnprior Mayor David Reid doesn’t appear to be coping well with his sentence during the annual Jail and Bail fundraiser Saturday in the Giant Tiger parking lot. Reeve Walter Stack and Coun. Lynn Grindstead were among others who participated. Money raised to “free” those in the slammer goes toward Arnprior Community Policing, a non-profit organization with a mandate to proactively prevent crimes such as break-ins and property theft. The fundraiser made just under $6,000. Meanwhile, Community Policing is looking for a new logo and slogan and you can help. To find out how, see Page 33. Photo by Derek Dunn

Continued from front Drainage and other issues must figure in, too. Smith said the group should expect to cover all costs, but that Trillium grants are available. Coun. Lyle Anderson, who lives nearby, would like to see lighting in place one day to dissuade young people from partying in the area. Reeve Walter Stack said he didn’t want ownership of the trail, but to treat the area like Macnamara. Coun. Lynn Grinstead said further development could threaten wildlife habitat. “We are going to push those turtles and beavers away. That is a concern,” she said. “I’m going to raise that concern. Are we going to send these turtles away?” They haven’t been driven away so far, Smith replied. Mayor David Reid wants to keep an option open that could see the CN and CP tracks link at that area. Council agreed to send a letter to group spokesperson Thomas Charbonneau outlining requirements prior to any agreement.

Arnprior council has approved funding a term position to cover extra finance work backed up from last year. The many infrastructure projects, staff changes, water billing fiasco, and software training forced treasurer David Pollard to hire a billing-accounting clerk for a four-month period. Council was wary, saying at the time it

shouldn’t lead to a full-time position. Pollard explained at the May 9 council meeting that the water treatment plant and sewage treatment plant upgrades meant a lot of work on behalf of senior finance staff, as did the water billing problems. (Of the 2,800 water billing accounts, about 500 still require adjustments.) He requested a further 12month term for the clerk. Coun. Ted Strike, who worked

staff, and that to catch up to normal conditions quickly an extension is necessary. “I know by watching and observing staff they need the help down there,” Reid said. “The goal is to get caught up by the

ADHS student Anna Ruddy asks Arnprior council for an exemption to the town’s noise bylaw. The high school will hold an event June 3 that includes live music.

Rezoning a mistake: resident Continued from front Council unanimously supported the rezoning to allow the development on a former sawmill site on the edge of the village. “You’ve made a mistake,” said Harry Strelow after the vote was taken. He indicated he would probably appeal the decision to the Ontario Municipal Board. Brian Majaury, who said he is known as the ‘mayor of Waba’ urged council not to back the project because the vast majority in the area oppose it. “It’s a beautiful piece of property,” he said, maintaining that there are many better uses for it that would be better for both the owner and the township. He suggested a restaurant or some sort of tourist attraction overlooking the creek would be more suitable. Mayor Mary Campbell, who said that Majaury should have provided input before the decision was made, said that the

township allows some commercial uses in its hamlets. The Strelows stand that no commercial developments be allowed in Waba doesn’t fit with either the province’s or the township’s planning goals, she said. Coun. Aldene Styles, surprised by the public outcry, said she visited the site after council tabled it in April. However, she has come to the conclusion that the property is suitable for the development. It’s adjacent to vacant land and shouldn’t result in traffic problems, she said. While there were concerns about the owners being an absentee landlord, the Stewarts live only about five minutes away, she said. The owners have agreed to fence the area to prevent vandalism and improve security, but that provision wasn’t included in the bylaw governing the rezoning.

The student council member said the 12-hour fundraiser – in support of cancer awareness research – will take place at the school overnight June 3. The music ends before a 11 p.m. closing ceremony, she said. Ruddy asked council for an exemption to the noise bylaw. Military runners bolstered by impressive support SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Arnprior and McNabBraeside once again served up an overwhelming show of support for the Run For Military Families as the fourth annual event stopped at several local spots Thursday, May 5. The run, which began at Parliament Hill Thursday morning and culminated in a Red Friday rally at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa Friday, raised $55,000 for local military family resource centres. Arnprior Mayor David Reid welcomed the group, which included a tank that was driven right into Legion park, much to the delight of hundreds of students gathered there. Among the runners again this year was CFB Petawawa commander Keith Rudderham. Red Friday Ladies Lisa Miller and Karen Boire, who started the Red Friday movement five years ago, were also in Arnprior to welcome the runners and thank the crowd for supporting the cause. “Well, we’re obviously doing our job,” said Boire, addressing the hundreds of students gathered at Legion Park. “Knowing that you support us gives us the extra strength we need.” Andre Gagne, director of the run for military families, expressed his thanks to all those who supported the event. “Raising funds is one thing but raising awareness for military families and what they go through is even more impressive,” said Gagne.

Runners had dinner and bedded down in Arnprior May 5. Organizers Tracy Gorman, left, and Kim Hetherington definitely earned their meal at Legion Branch 714 that evening. Photo by Derek Dunn “During the run we had great reception from the school children and Arnprior as they ran into Legion Park,” said local organizer Arnprior Coun. Lynn Grinstead. McNabBraeside’s warm reception at a late afternoon barbecue at the RA Centre in Braeside was much appreciated, as well. Local organizations and the public came together to make the experience a memorable one for participants, said Grinstead. “The Legion was another strong supporter this year, not only supplying the food for the lunch at Legion Park, but also cooking dinner for the runners and the support group,” said Grinstead, who thanked members for the ongoing support. McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell joined the township’s fire department and members of the public in welcoming the runners to Braeside. Campbell, who owns a

catering business and bed and breakfast, offered a warm welcome and spoke of a young woman who had inquired about and booked a wedding at her facility. She didn’t think much of it when the woman, a native of Cape Breton, phoned and cancelled a few months later. It wasn’t until later that Campbell learned the reason the wedding was called off and the fate of the woman’s fiancé – a soldier who had been wounded in battle in Afghanistan and later died in hospital. That late soldier was known to affectionately call his fiancée Wifey. “Give generously today,” Campbell urged the audience. “If nothing else for that girl from Cape Breton that her fiance called Wifey.” Lead organizer and sponsor of the run is Commissionaires Ottawa, in partnership with CFB Petawawa and Canadian Forces Support Unit (Ottawa).

LETTERS

Kids in the House

Majority was needed

The joke going around Parliament Hill is that most of the new MPs on Parliament Hill are the class of 2011. Unless you’re a New Democrat. Then, you’re likely to be called part of the Kindergarten Class of 2011. In fact, you could say that parliament’s Quebec caucus is brought to you by the letters N, D and P, and the number 102. But jokes aside, a lot of the conversation since election night has been about the NDP, and well it should be, considering their best ever-showing, making them Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. It is good news that the new MP from Sherbrooke, Pierre-Luc Dusseault, is Canada’s youngest-ever MP at age 19. Overall, four students from Montreal’s McGill University are now headed to Ottawa. In spite of the jokes about the Honourable Member for Las Vegas, Ruth Ellen Brosseau (the new member for Berthier-Maskinongé), seeing so many young people on the benches will change how young people view politics. No more turning on the parliamentary channel to see a sea of wrinkles and grey hair, but scattered about, people who look and sound like them. Yes, some will disappoint, but many will rise to the occasion. Sometimes, people succeed best against lowered expectations. Who’s to say that there might not be a future prime minister amongst this crop of young people, not just in the NDP ranks? In all of this though, whither the Liberals? Once one of the most successful political parties in the western world, the Liberals now have only 34 seats in the House of Commons. While it is too early to tell who will lead the party’s decimated ranks, we again come to the issue of youth and a humble suggestion – why not Justin Trudeau for interim leader? It would show the electorate that the Liberals too are serious about young people. Trudeau has said he will not seek the Liberal leadership. By taking the interim job, he could have the best of both worlds – time at the top, albeit with a time limit, and reminding Liberals of happier days, of his father’s legacy. Word has also come out this week that former Prime Minister Jean Chretien has been touting former Ontario Premier Bob Rae as interim leader. Having long-held leadership aspirations, Rae would be better as the party’s future leader. He’s done it before – didn’t he used to run the Ontario NDP?

To the editor: Congratulations Ottawa Valley and Canada (Quebec?) Finally after two very disruptive, unproductive minority governments, we now have a majority that will do justice to the Valley and Canada for the next four years. It has taken a long time; however, the light has been turned on and there is the opportunity of some stability. If for some unknown reason at the end of the specified term we are not happy, then the option is there to at least change. The thought of another minority with the inclusion of the Bloc was just not in the books and should not have ever been; however, now we will get a first-hand look at how well ‘from a Jack to a King’ can perform when the rubber hits the pavement and how all of his election promises will play out. Great election victory for Stephen Harper - go out and give ’er. Denny Ferguson Pakenham

Restore Canada’s role as a peace-builder To the editor: I attended the candidates meeting in April and I want to thank all those who ran in the election. Being a politician is a difficult position and the caliber of candidates was encouraging. For those who were not elected, I hope you continue to pursue your desire to be leaders in our community in other ways. What I want to talk about through is the lack of information apparent in responses received to the question on peace-building. I was pleased that one of my questions was posed to the candidates and that was: “Given the increasing demands on Canada to respond to conflict domestically and internationally, if elected, how would you support the reinvigoration of Canada’s role as a peacebuilder?” I was not surprised with the responses. It is consistently disappointing how little our leaders know about the development of peacekeeping, peacemaking and peace-building that has occurred since Lester B Pearson introduced it as a foreign policy more than 50 years ago. While Canada was a leader in peacekeeping, it is now one of the least involved internationally. Sadly, the illusion of peacekeeping has been used to

lull the Canadian public into resignation of our role in situations such as Afghanistan and now in Libya. The term peacekeeping was coined by Lester B Pearson and has a defined protocol. Peacekeeping facilitates the transition between violent conflicts to nonviolence based on an invitation from warring states or an offer to those countries from an impartial country or in this some belligerent cases the UN. Peacekeeping does not involve initiating violent action even in response to an attack, putting into power a NATOapproved leader, and/or having NATO lead and direct any action. Moreover, while the Manley report in 2008 agreed with Canada’s military role in Afghanistan that decision could be argued to be the function of a politician with limited imagination. While Manley goes down the list in his report why attempts through military means would not bring peace and security to the region and that reconstruction efforts were not working, his only conclusion was now that we’re there we have to see it through. Was there no one else to consult for options? In the meantime, a growing number of Canadians choose peace-building as a career and find less support and

understanding of that role occurring from our government. This phenomenon occurred before the Conservative Party but continues under their leadership. The Canadian Department of Peace Initiative (CDPI) is a citizen’s movement to bring attention to this diversion from Canada as a leader in peaceful approaches to conflict. Supporters across the country have spoken to MPs, members of Foreign Affairs and National Defence as well as community leaders to gain their advice and support on how to re-establish the role of Canada in peace-building. The result has been a growing support even from established political parties to the principles of peace-building, even in subscribing to the concept of a Canadian Department of Peace. The Canadian Department of Peace Initiative is advocating institutionalization of theory and practices of a culture of peace and conflict resolution by peaceful means or a nonkilling approach to security issues in Canada and abroad. What’s next? Iggy’s replacement?

Day of Peace Continued from Page 6 For example, through the influence of CDPI members, a Bloc Quebecois MP presented a motion to parliament to recognize the International Day of Peace. All federal parties recognized Sept. 21 as the International Day of Peace in June 2009. This day is meant to bring to global consciousness to the use of non-military options. It was endorsed by all parties and the proposal is now before the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario for endorsement. Furthermore, at last year’s Ottawa Peace Festival, the municipalities of Ottawa, Chelsea, and Cantley joined the international movement to instill the principles of Cities of Peace into their communities. It is my hope the Ottawa Valley will make Sept. 21 a day of reflection and celebration of the many innovative and effective ways people everywhere bring peace to their lives and those they care for. Theresa Dunn Arnprior Theresa Dunn is the National Co-Chair of the Canadian Department of Peace Initiative. She is happy to explain the vision and path developed by the CDPI to anyone who wants to invite her to speak.

Tripod the three-legged dog may be gone, but he’s certainly not forgotten. Tripod, a 13-year-old purebred golden retriever, had to be put down March 11 because he was suffering from arthritis. “He was in a lot of pain,” said owner George Perry of Arnprior. “His quality of life was gone.” Perry got Tripod, who was born without his front right leg but did have a paw, when the dog was two years old. Tripod had been abused and Perry was anxious to give him the loving home he needed. “He was a people dog, he loved people, he always wanted to be around people,” said Perry. Tripod and Perry were a well-known pair around town, particularly in the now-closed Salvation Army thrift shop, where they often liked to stop for a coffee and a chat. “People got to know him, they’d come up and say hi. They just fell in love with him and they still ask about him.” Tripod was a faithful companion to Perry, who has mobility challenges, but is still able to walk all around town. “He always walked in front of me, never beside me,” said Perry. The dog would stop if there was an obstacle or he sensed something out of sorts. “He was always happy, always good-natured,” said Perry, who said he only saw his four-legged friend cross once. A Rottweiler snapped at Perry and Tripod was having none of it – snapping right back at the dog. “He was just protecting me,” said Perry. His owner was not the only person Tripod watched out for, either. One day on a regular walk on a winter’s day, Tripod stopped, trying to head in another direction. When Perry followed Tripod’s lead, they discovered an elderly man who had

When the dog persisted, Perry checked and found an older woman who had fallen. “He sensed things like that,” said Perry. He has a new dog, a gentle and sweet Lhasa Apso named Taz. She’s a great friend to Perry, who said the company of a pet for someone living alone is a great comfort. But he still misses Tripod very much and treasures the dog’s memory.

Rural health care clinics are coming to McNab-Braeside. The township has been successful in having the County Paramedics host clinics at the township office. CAO Noreen Mellema told council last week that the clinics will be held on the last Tuesday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m., starting May 31, A representative of the diabetes group will also be on hand to provide advice. “It’s wonderful news,” said Mayor Mary Campbell. “We can really build on it.” She said the Heart Institute and mental health officials have also expressed interest in participating occasionally. The clinics will be promoted on the township’s website. The paramedics have expressed interest in expanding their efforts to help residents prevent disease instead of just responding to emergency calls.

Locals help Lumber Kings win JOHN CARTER John.carter@metroland.com

The Canadian champions came to Arnprior Monday for a meal on their way home to a hero’s welcome. The Central Hockey League Pembroke Lumber Kings, with two home-grown Arnprior players, brought the Royal Bank Cup to town. The team dropped by Eastside Mario’s about 4 p.m. for dinner and to use up some time as their Upper Ottawa Valley home town prepared a parade in their honour. The Lumber Kings, captained by Arnprior’s Ben Reinhardt, won the Canadian Junior A championship Sunday with a 2-0 blanking of defending champion Vernon Vipers in a game broadcast on TSN television. The victory capped off an amazing five-year run for Pembroke. The Lumber Kings have won five straight CJHL crowns and two Fred Paige Cups, but it’s their first Royal Bank Cup. Pembroke has played for the Canadian title four times, but this was their first championship. It was a satisfying good bye for Reinhardt, who is off to play hockey at the University of Alabama-Huntsville next season. He was first to hoist the national championship trophy over his head at the conclusion of the

Arnprior hockey players Ben Reinhardt, left, and Kyle Just, celebrate with the Bogart Cup, left, Royal Bank Cup and Fred Paige Cup emblematic of the Central Junior League, Canadian and Eastern Canadian championships respectively. The team was given a hero’s welcome Monday in Pembroke after returning from winning the Canadian Junior A hockey title for the first time in franchise history. Photo by Mike Yeas title game in Camrose, Alberta. Reinhardt has a record five CJHL championship rings, two Fred Paige Cups and now a Canadian championship on his resume. It’s an accomplishment that will likely never be topped, say league officials. His teammates said that one of their main motivations was to win a Canadian title for Re-

inhardt in the final year of his Junior A career. Also on the Lumber Kings roster was Arnprior forward, Kyle Just, whose scoring prowess has played a major role in the team’s success in the past couple of years. Renfrew-Nipissing- Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski congratulated the team during Question Period in the Ontario Legisla-

ture Monday, saying it was a great moment for everyone in the Valley. Yakabuski had special praise for goalie Francis Dupuis who made 40 saves in the final game and said it was a thrill to see Reinhardt hoist the cup. After they left Arnprior, the Lumber Kings were met by more than 1,000 supporters when they arrived in Pembroke. They were paraded through the streets on a flatbed trailer. At the end of the parade, the players thanked fans for their support. Reinhardt echoes the sentiments and said he couldn’t imagine a better way to finish his Junior A career. At one point last week, it appeared the title would elude the Lumber Kings. However, they saved the best for last after they squeaked into the elimination round with a 1-3 record. Pembroke doubled host Camrose 4-2 Saturday, then upset the previously undefeated B.C. champs Sunday. In the win over two-time defending champion Vernon, Jonathon Milley, who was named tournament MVP, scored both goals. The game’s highlights were aired Monday during the first intermission at the Hockey Night in Canada NHL playoff game between Vancouver and Nashville.

Curling Club to host trade show in 2012 The Arnprior Curling Club announced Monday that it will host a trade show at their facility May 5-6, 2012. The show will be a part of the club’s fundraising efforts in support of its efforts to acquire the property on which the curling rink is built. Curling club president Sandra Tait said that the reason for the early announcement is to allow for planning by businesses in Arnprior and District that would be interested in attending. She also noted the last trade show for Arnprior businesses was held some 10 years ago and it was felt that such an event would be welcomed again after such a long absence. The theme of the event will be ‘Getting to Know Your Local Businesses’. A preliminary presentation was made to the Arnprior Chamber of Commerce, which was very supportive of the idea. A brochure will be mailed out to local businesses in the near future outlining the event and soliciting commitment from interested participants. John Wahay has been named as the chairman for the event and can be contacted at 613-6220018.

Lumber Kings team up with Algonquin College JAMIE BRAMBURGER Algonquin College

Ben Reinhardt knows what it takes to win. He arguably has set a record that will never be broken in the Central Canadian Hockey League, having won five consecutive league championships with the Pembroke Lumber Kings. Reinhardt has also led his team to a Hockey Canada National Junior A Championship in Camrose, Alberta, but the Lumber Kings captain focuses on more than hockey. He’s finishing up his assignments at Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley, helping to ensure he wins both on the ice and in the classroom. Reinhardt is one of five Lumber Kings who studied at Algonquin’s Pembroke Campus this past winter. The primary reason Reinhardt enrolled was to protect his eligibility to play in the CCHL, as he would have become ineligible when he turned 21 years of age, had he not been in school. However taking courses in the General Arts and Science program are also helping prepare him for university, where next year he will suit up with the University of Alabama in Huntsville to play division one NCAA hockey. The soft-spoken Reinhardt admits

hockey has been his priority since he joined the Lumber Kings in 2007, the first year the Kings went on their incredible run of winning five consecutive league titles. This year was also Reinhardt’s last chance for the RBC Cup and he knew he wouldn’t get another chance. “I recognize that hockey has a shelf life and that schooling is important for my future,” says Reinhardt. “Attending Algonquin College has helped me get one more chance to win a national title, but it’s also helping me secure my scholarship to attend the University of Alabama where I will be focusing my studies on Counter Intelligence and Foreign Affairs while playing for the Chargers.” For his teammates, Stephen Farrell and Tyler Tosunian, their Algonquin experience also had a purpose. Tosunian is from California and his hockey career required him to move around a lot, making it difficult for him to focus on his high school studies. When he was recruited by Bemidj University in Minnesota to play hockey, he knew he had to prove himself academically, and he did, by picking up courses at Algonquin that would demonstrate his commitment to education. “I knew I had to pull up my socks in school and I had to be committed to getting the best marks I could in college. I want to continue to play hockey at a high

level, but having an education is critical, and in my case, it is the key to having the opportunity to move forward within the sport,” says Tosunian. Tosunian got things started at Algonquin when he enrolled last fall. When the January semester began, he was joined by four teammates, all with their own reasons for taking college courses. Lumber Kings Coach and General Manager, Sheldon Keefe, says having a college in Pembroke is becoming increasingly important to the team’s recruitment efforts. “Many of the players in our league have aspirations to play university hockey and the best way to achieve that goal is to do well in school. For older players who have graduated from high school, college provides an avenue for them to prove they can excel at a post-secondary level. American and Canadian universities want to see that when they make commitments to players,” adds Keefe. The Lumber Kings organization is excited about how the building of a new college campus will further enhance the team’s ability to attract players to Pembroke. “Having a brand new campus right across the street from the Pembroke Memorial Centre is certainly going to leave an impression with players who try out for our team. It will be important for both

them and their parents, as access to postsecondary education is an important selling point in our recruitment process,” says Keefe. Stephen Farrell is in his last year with the Lumber Kings. All season long he has played with Reinhardt, pairing as two of the top defencemen on the club. Farrell is still hoping to secure a scholarship to play university hockey next season, and, like Reinhardt, he had to be in school to remain eligible to play in the CCHL. The 21-year old Farrell admits school has been challenging at times, but he is thankful that Algonquin College was available to him. “Had I not enrolled in the General Arts and Science program in the winter, I would not have been able to continue playing for the Lumber Kings, and the opportunity to play at the RBC Cup would have been lost. For that, I will always be grateful to Algonquin College,” says Farrell. “I think these young men have been excellent ambassadors for all hockey players,” says General Arts and Science Co-ordinator, Shawn Pentecost. “They worked very hard during their time at Algonquin and achieved their academic goals, while dealing with the celebrity that comes with playing junior hockey in Pembroke,” adds Pentecost.

The school’s Senior Girls rugby team is preparing to host the Eastern Ontario championship (EOSSAA) Wednesday, May 18 at Dochert Park with hopes of qualifying for the Ontario championship (OFSAA). So far the girls have a perfect record, winning two high-level tournaments hosted by Queens University and Trent University. Currently ADHS is ranked eighth in the province in girls rugby.

The Arnprior Curling Club has elected Sandra Tait as its new president. Tait, the club’s first woman president in about 10 years, was born and raised in Paisley, Ontario, where she was first introduced as a youth to the game of curling. She and her family lived in Ottawa for 25 years where she was employed as an Registered Nurse in both frontline and management positions. Sandra and her husband, Brian, retired to the Arnprior area in 2003 and have been active in the Arnprior Curling Club and the local community for the past seven years. When asked what direction the club will take under her leadership, she responded that she will strive with all the directors to provide the best possible curling program and social experience for both recreational and competitive curlers in the Arnprior area. In particular she will continue the work in progress to finalize the curling rink property sale agreement pending with the Agricultural Society. In order to be owners instead of renters of the curling rink, the club will need to develop a

sound business strategy to maintain financial stability in order to ensure the longevity of the club. Tait would like to see an increase in the membership and to continue to expand the youth program, which has been very successful with the partnership with Tim Hortons. She would like to see the curling club be used more as a community, social, recreational and meeting facility with year-round activities occurring. The success of the club has been its members and their commitment to making the curling club a fun place to be, not only to curl but to socialize. “I have enjoyed my curling experience and have made some great new friends through the club, so it is time for me to contribute my time and energy to ensure the club continues to be a welcoming recreational facility for this community,” Tait said. Her term of office will be for two years and she replaces Russell Oatman whose terms expired in April. Also elected to the board April 19 was John Wahay as media director. All other board members remain the same.

Bishop attends 150th anniversary service

JOHN CARTER

Emmanuel Anglican Church of Arnprior began its 150th anniversary celebrations in earnest Sunday, with a special service featuring Bishop John Chapman. “It was our first special event (for the 150 year)... it was wonderful,” said Helen Hall, one of the main organizers of the festivities. “It was a beautiful service and a good crowd.”

She said organizers wondered about the response, with it being Mother’s Day, but the service was well-attended. The service, which was attended by several visiting clergy, featured two special dedications and the naming of the chapel. One was made in the memory of former parishioner Jeffery Draper, who died in an accident last summer, and the other was in memory of Cindy Fritsch-Swift. The Chapel of the Holy Family was named and dedicated.

Homecoming, choir concert, barbecue planned for 150th Arnprior’s Emmanuel Anglican Church will hold a couple of special events at month’s end and a major homecoming weekend in October to celebrate its 150th anniversary. A 15-member committee is organizing anniversary celebrations. Member Helen Hall, who is acting as church historian, notes that the church’s annual chicken barbecue will be held May 28 from 4 to 7

p.m. The next day the church will host a 4 p.m. concert by the Christ Church Cathedral Girls Choir. The choir is growing in fame and will be singing in Westminster Abbey next year. A goodwill offering will be taken for the Arnprior concert. The main anniversary festivities will be held on a homecoming weekend Oct. 14-16.

Ontario Hydro worker James Mullins shows Walter Zadow students how the cherry picker operates. The power company planted a tree in the schoolyard in celebration of Arbour Week. Photos by Derek Dunn

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Teachers Joanne Pesckie, Pam Steele, Laura Dawson, Krista Sparling and Nancy Forrest brought their students outside to gather around a cherry picker. Ontario Hydro’s Zach Proulx and James Mullins showed off various chainsaws and other safety harnesses before Mullins climbed inside the box and left the ground. The students marvelled, whooped and hollered, and even started chanting “jump, jump” while he prepared a rope for manual descent. The crew then planted a maple in the school yard before handing every student a young spruce to take home. Hopefully it won’t be planted beneath power lines, some joked.

Loud, heavy machinery combined with dangerous heights and daredevil stunts? What more could a kid ask for from a day at school? But that’s what some 70 Grade 3 and 4 students at Walter Zadow Elementary School got to experience on Thursday, May 5. It was Arbour Week and the school teamed up with Ontario Hydro to teach kids about the importance of trees, safety and electricity. Every year Ontario Hydro cuts down about 380,000 trees to prevent disruption of lines. Many are dead or dying. Still, the company plants roughly the same amount to offset its ecological footprint. Hydro One’s Terry Forrest was on hand to oversee the presentation in the gymnasium before fun was had on the playground. He spoke to the notion of corporate conscience. “If we are replacing one for one we feel we are doing our part,” he said. “To be honest, about 70 per cent of the trees we take down are already dead.” Forrest said the April 28 wind storm didn’t top the 1998 ice storm in terms of tree damage, but he has never seen the problems so widespread. Crews were busy putting in double time for days from Calabogie to Carp.

MAKING GIVING FUN AT ST. JOSEPH’S St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Arnprior has made a major contribution to the Rumbly Tummy initiative for the Arnprior and Area Food Bank. The school has become a major supporter this year of the program that collects food once a month for delivery to the food bank. Over the period of Lent, St. Joe’s held several dress-up days, where children donated change toward a collection for the food bank. All classes were involved in holding several spirit days that helped promote the donations. In the spirit of making the campaign fun, the efforts of each class were portrayed by race cars in a chart on the school wall. The Lent campaign wrapped up April 29 on royalty dress-up day in honour of the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Photo submitted

St. Joseph’s students and staff have been collecting food items monthly for the Arnprior and Area Food Bank. Those contributions were buoyed by a major donation collected during dress-up days during the period of Lent. When the contributions were added up, an astounding $1,010.54 was handed over to the Rumbly Tummy program represented Darlene Denis-Friske to pass on to the food bank at a special visit this Sunday, May 15. Presenting Denis-Friske with the cheque were Erin Heney’s Grade 5 class, who took a lead role in collecting the money. Denis-Friske said St. Joseph’s has “been a wonderful part” of the Rumbly Tummy project, which is slowing growing each month with support from individuals, businesses, organizations and schools. “They (St. Joe’s) were one of the first to take it on,” she noted. “We stress that every donation is important … it’s promoting the spirit of generosity that’s what we want to do.” Principal Mary-Lise Rowat said the monthly donations impressed on the students that the food bank needs donations year-round and not only at Christmas. Annie set to be a huge musical success A new local music theatre company is bringing Annie to the stage at Arnprior District High School next month. On June 2 to 4, Arnprior theatre lovers will have the opportunity to see local talent perform in the musical classic ‘Annie’. Set in 1933 in New York City, the musical chronicles the adventures of the heroine, 11-year-old Annie, as she searches for the parents she never knew. Featuring popular songs such as ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘It’s the Hard-Knock Life’, the show is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The title role is being shared by Vanessa Farmer of Braeside and Emily Helferty of Douglas. Each girl will star in two of the four performances. Arnprior native Vanessa, who stars in the Thursday evening and Saturday matinee performances, says the “play itself is emotional with a lot of intense scenes”, but it is “fun and I like being on stage.” ‘Annie’ is the inaugural production of Two Rivers Musical Productions, founded by Bernie Miller, Lisa Webber and Marisa Bosa to provide a venue for the wealth of musical and technical talent in the area. Rehearsals are going very well as the cast and production team prepare for the big day. “It’s a lot of work but we have a wonderful cast and crew who are very dedicated and talented,” said Miller, who is stage director. The musical will be performed

Green meals now on the menu On May 27-28 I am doing a 24hour fundraiser Baillie Birdathon in the Carden Alvar near Orillia. The event raises money for bird conservation, which we sure need more of. You can pledge a set amount or

an amount per species. I expect to find more than 100 species in that period, with 125 my target. You can sponsor me in one of two ways. You can donate directly on-line through Bird Studies Canada (http://www. gifttool.com/athon/CategoryDe

nearby hillsides is eaten on the spot. Beavers are also “dining in,” eating fresh aquatic growth, especially new shoots of Cattails that are now emerging from the water. The other evening I watched a Beaver dive and come up with unfolding Water-lily leaves that had not yet reached the surface of the pond. Judging by how quickly they were eaten, they must have been delicious! Recently I’ve been watching Red Squirrels climb to treetops and nip off new leaves that are not yet fully unfolded. They bit them off at the base held in their dexterous front paws, eating them like fajitas. One squirrel bit off old flowers on Staghorn Sumacs and devoured them like cobs of corn. What puzzled me was that the squirrel was clearly selecting the oldest flower heads, ones that contained no red and only blackened remains. Another mystery to solve! From the bottoms of ponds to the tops of trees, animals are currently enjoying green meals everywhere!

April showers (of which we certainly have had a few!) certainly brought May flowers. Already many of the early risers have faded; seedpods now replace blooms in many woodlands. With tree leaves unfolding and fresh shoots sprouting up everywhere, green has become the dominant colour. The new growth has not gone unnoticed and many animals are currently enjoying it. Now, on the list of grazers there are some animals that you might guess right away, such as White-tailed Deer and Groundhogs. But there are also a few species that might just surprise you. Porcupines have a green tooth and currently they are spending time at ground level eating grass. This is done mostly through the night and when the sun rises they usually retreat to their hidden dens. Black Bears are also grazing fresh growth, especially grasses and sedges, and right now they frequent forest openings and quiet roadsides. When a bear grazes it sounds remarkably like a domestic cow - noisy! Black Bears and Porcupines also eat new leaves on poplars, but this tasty treat is usually enjoyed at night. Even animals in aquatic habitats are getting into the grazing act. Muskrats and Beavers are devouring fresh growth along the shores of ponds and rivers. Although Beavers bring larger material back to the water’s safety before they dine, much of the green growth on banks and

The weather this week tells us that summer is right around the corner. That means we are wrapping up our spring programs. Kayaking — we have extended our deadline for the Highschool Whitewater Kayaking program to this Sunday, May 15. Don’t wait until last minute; register today. The lessons are on May 19 and 26 and June 2 in the pool from 8-9 p.m., then a whole day of Wilderness Tours June 6 PA Day. Registration is $115. This past week was the last week for After School and our trip is this upcoming Tuesday to Frontier Trails. We will be doing kayaking, archery and a group-wide scavenger hunt. Every year we go on a trip. We have gone to Aventure Lafleche, Y Dunrobin, Pure Life Adventures and now Frontier Trails. It is going to be a great time! Fencing is continuing to run with the full group of 25. Everyone is learning some new moves and skills taught from champion and instructor Bonnie from Ottawa Fencing. Awesome job guys! Ball Hockey is underway and rolling. Everyone is having a great time playing. A thank you to all our team sponsors who helped us run this league. Keep it up everyone and get practicing for the skills competition at the end of the year. Next week is our cooking class, instructed by Shay Klimpel. This class has been full since March, so all 10 of our youth will be cooking a delicious meal. Our June class is also full, but for those who didn’t register, September will bring new classes. Grade 5s and 9s: Use your passes right up until the end of August. Swimming, skating, shinny and more awaits. We have some exciting new opportunities in September, but our lips are sealed to what that is. We have already starting planning our fall and winter programs. If you have any ideas, contact Kayla at the Nick Smith Centre! For more information, contact Kayla or Don at the Nick Smith Centre at 613-623-7301 or by email kreinert@arnprior.ca email. Keep in mind all registrations must be done in person at the Nick Smith Centre. Remember you can add us to Facebook by searching for ‘Nick Smith Centre’ and join our group ‘Arnprior Parks and Recreation Youth Programs’.

RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski has questioned Premier Dalton McGuinty about his “secret, untendered Samsung deal.” Citing the Liberals “legacy of corrupting competitive bidding,” Yakabuski asked on Tuesday why Ontario families are paying a premium for the Samsung deal, which “shut out homegrown talent.” The government handed out a $7 billion deal without a competitive process, which is driving up hydro bills for Ontario families, he said. If the Liberals “failed energy experiments” aren’t stopped, they will lock Ontario families into paying unsustainable subsidies on their bills for the next 20 years, charged Yakabuski.

ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE - May 12 2011

A car burst into ames after hitting a deer on Highway 17 in the Arnprior area last Thursday about 10 p.m. The female driver of the car with Quebec plates escaped serious injury. However, the deer was killed. Arnprior OPP and the Arnprior and McNab-Braeside ďŹ re departments attended the crash site, just east of Division Street intersection near the Arnprior-McNab border. The McNab-Braeside ďŹ reďŹ ghters had the ďŹ re out by the time Arnprior arrived. An ambulance was called, but was not needed. Photo by Mike Yeas

Warm weather and sunshine are not the only things that are making a return. The change in season also brings with it the reemergence of active wildlife and, unfortunately, an increased number of vehicle collisions with animals, such as the one on Highway 17 near Arnprior last Thursday evening. Renfrew OPP report responding to 15 motor vehicle collisions since May 2, with several of them resulting from animals on the roadways. With May and June being peak periods for wildlife collisions, CAA North and East Ontario (CAANEO) is reminding motorists to exercise caution and vigilance when driving. “During the months of May and June, many animals will stay close to roadways to escape biting insects,â€? explained Korey Kennedy, manager of Public and Government Affairs. “As collisions involving wildlife remain high in communities throughout North and East Ontario, our club reminds motorists to be observant when using local roadways in the coming months.â€? According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), in 2007, 13,954 motor vehicle collisions involving a wild animal were reported, though many more go unreported each year. The MTO also notes on average there is a vehicle collision with wildlife every 38 minutes in the province, and one out of every 17 motor vehicle collisions involves wildlife. CAA North & East Ontario advises all road-users to be cautious when travelling in rural areas, and to pay special attention to yellow warning signs that have been posted to indentify speciďŹ c areas as having a history of wildlife collisions. Here are some other simple and sensible tips for avoiding wildlife collisions: • constantly scan the roadway and its shoulders; • use high beams when possible and watch for the glowing eyes of animals; • brake ďŹ rmly if you see an animal crossing or standing on the road – do not expect that the animal will move out of your way; • wildlife often travel in groups; if you see one, others may follow; • never swerve your vehicle suddenly to avoid an animal as this could cause you to lose control and head into oncoming trafďŹ c; • if possible, avoid driving at dusk and dawn, which is when the majority of wildlife collisions occur.

Calling all artists and wordsmiths. Sharpen your pencils and put on your thinking caps, because 2011 is Arnprior Community Policing’s 20th anniversary, and it wants your ideas for a logo that will best reflect the committee’s proud accomplishments and promising future. Logos make it easy for people to associate value with a service when they see a symbol or message. Community Policing is running a contest to find a logo that represents all there is to value in the organization. Here’s what you need to know to participate. Contest rules and guidelines: A logo is a graphic element, symbol or icon designed to serve as the brand of an organization and a slogan is a short, positive advertising statement that describes what that organization is all about. 50th Wedding Anniversary Ross & Ellen Huggard

Thank You

Although Monica will be submitting her own Thank You to the local newspaper, any family member or close friend can tell you that Monica, herself, is also deserving of a heartfelt Thank You. Bruce and Monica met 35 years ago at Wes’ Chip stand in Arnprior and have been inseparable ever since. In 1979 they were married and went on to have 4 children – Wes, Nadine, Katelyn and Emily. In this day and age, it’s not uncommon to see couples get married and think to yourself – “that is never going to last” – but then you see people like Bruce and Monica and you know that they meant every last word of “’til death do us part”. From camping to racing – they spent countless hours together and right down to Bruce’s final hours, Monica stayed by his side holding his hand, so that he knew that he was never alone. Sadly, on April 29th, Monica had to say goodbye to her best friend of 35 years, her husband of almost 32 years and the true love of her life. In this very difficult time, her children would like to thank her for all the love, courage and strength she has showed all of us during these last few weeks. They would also like to kindly remind her that, like Bruce, she will never be alone and all four of her children love her just as much as he did. CL24476

On behalf of the family and myself, I’d like to thank the community for all the support they have shown us since the passing of Bruce. We’d like to thank Andre Pilon for the beautiful service he provided us – from allowing us to park Bruce’s prized 1969 Beaumont in front of the building – to singing “The Green Green Grass of Home” – the people at Pilon’s Funeral Home truly went above and beyond. Bruce’s family would like to express their gratitude towards Father John – for the kindness that he showed Bruce and for the unforgettable, personalized mass he conducted during the funeral. Last but certainly not least, the entire family would like to thank all the friends and community members who sent flowers, placed a donation in Bruce’s honour, prepared food, provided services and just offered their condolences during this time – to all of you, Thank You.

New Home Warranty

NC)—To protect the warranty that you are entitled to as the owner of a newly built home in Ontario, routine upkeep is essential. Improper maintenance, or just plain neglect, can result in damages that your warranty won’t cover. Tarion Warranty Corporation, the non–profit, private corporation established in 1976 to protect new home buyers according to the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act, suggests the following tips to help prevent moisture damage: OUTSIDE THE HOME • Fix the caulking around windows and doors and on the roof if it becomes cracked or separated. • Keep flowerbeds and landscaping at least six inches or 150 mm away from the top of the foundation. Placing soil near or above the top of the foundation allows moisture to come into direct contact with the structure of the home. • Clear eavestroughs of debris regularly and extend downspouts so that water is directed away from your home. Water that flows around the foundation could

eventually find its way into the basement. • Have your roof inspected regularly to ensure shingles, flashing and chimney caps are in place and sealed properly. INSIDE THE HOME • In the summer, dehumidify the basement to avoid condensation buildup on the cool foundation walls.

systems in your new home – including heating, electrical, plumbing and air conditioning – will both help safeguard your warranty and ensure you enjoy your home to the fullest. A more detailed Home Maintenance Checklist can be found online at www.tarion.com. If you have any questions about your warranty, contact Tarion at 1–877–982–7466.

• Repair leaky pipes and fixtures immediately. Clean and completely dry any areas that are dampened or wet within 48 hours. • Investigate and identify any musty smells and odours. They are often an indicator that there is a hidden moisture problem. • Purchase a “hygrometer” to monitor the relative humidity in your home. Ask your builder about additional maintenance tips. He may also be able to provide information about proper maintenance for specific products provided by manufacturers. Knowing how to properly operate all the

The Ontario Nurses’ Association’s (ONA’s) 57,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals and more than 12,000 nursing student affiliates are markikng Nursing Week (May 9-15) with a range of events and activities to recognize nurses’ special contributions to health care. ONA members working in hospitals, long-term care, public health, the com-

munity, clinics and industry will celebrate National Nursing Week with local activities to recognize their profession. Many will also enjoy The ONA’s first vicepresident Vicki McKenna and regional vice-president Anne Clark visited Arnprior District Memorial Hospital and the Grove Nursing Home Wednesday to meet with nurses. The ONA’s Nursing 2011 theme is Val-

ue the Invaluable. “Value the Invaluable was chosen to remind everyone to recognize and celebrate the skills, dedication, knowledge and professionalism that nurses bring to their patients, residents and clients,” explained ONA president Linda Haslam-Stroud. “Our nurses deserve to know that their hard work is valued and recognized, and Nursing Week is the perfect time to do

so,” she said. Haslam-Stroud is asking that members of the public join in recognizing the significant contributions nurses make under increasingly trying conditions to ensure patients receive the care they need. As healthcare continues to be under pressure with the loss of services, beds and front-line staff, it’s nurses who continue to advocate for quality care, she said.

Baby Feast turns 10

DOROTHY GARLOUGH It’s been 10 years that Garlough Photo of McNab-Braeside has been shooting babies. This isn’t gruesome shooting, damaging the little bundles, but it is joyful shooting commemorating them through fine

portraiture. Unbelievably, I’ve shot more than 300 babies during the 10 years that my business, Garlough Photo, has been hosting The Baby Feast and raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Society. The babies seem to pour out of the woodwork

every spring when the studio runs the competition for the babies with the nicest smile, the chubbiest cheeks, and the brightest eyes. The categories are not to be outdone by the most angelic, the most mischievous and the most delicious baby in all the land.

The community has celebrated its babies and has helped to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes for a decade now. How perfect is that? This is not to mention the fun I’ve had in squeezing the little ones and participating with the parents in doing whatever it takes

to get the attention of the baby. I will attest that I’m not the only crazy there. Ten years makes this a special event, just a little more splash, a little more celebration. Garlough Photo is excited about it and looks forward to meeting the new babies in its 10th year

of celebrating The Baby Feast. It is running from May 13 to 27. Yes, the Baby Feast is back. Book yo u r appointment by calling 613-432-6448 or e-mail dorothy@garloughphoto. com.
