Champs: Rugby girls win EOSSAA ADHS off to Ontario championship JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
50 GREAT YEARS The Arnprior Optimist Club celebrated 50 years of service to the community with a celebration Saturday Among those on hand to praise the club’s many contributions was Arnprior Mayor David Reid. 12
DARE TO CARE Despite exhortations of Art Jamieson and other hosts during Sunday’s Dare to Care telethon to raise much needed money for the Arnrprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home care coach, the telethon didn’t collect as much as last year. But never fear. People can still donate to ensure the survival of the well-used para-transit system. 2
In a clash of powerhouses, the Arnprior Redmen girls rugby team came out on top 22-14 at Dochart Park Wednesday to claim the Eastern Ontario high school championship. ADHS qualifies for the Ontario championship tournament May 30 to June 1 in Peterborough. Coach Glenn Wallace expects his squad to be ranked highly, likely one of the top four seeds, in the 16-team tournament. Both Arnprior and Rockland came into Wednesday’s EOSSA championship undefeated and easily won their semi-final games. In the final, Rockland took a 14-10 lead at half time. “It’s the first time we’ve faced significant adversity all season,” said Wallace. “I was interested in seeing how they would respond.” After Wallace and assistant coach Zack Robitaille advised their players to simplify their game and get back to using the skill and athleticism that got them to the title game, the girls responded with 12 unanswered points. ADHS player of the game Alexx Zoryk scored two tries for Arnprior and Shannon Roesler one. Sandra Hudson had a penalty kick and two conversions. Anyone interested in helping the 31 girls with their expenses to the Ontario final should contact ADHS principal Neil Farmer.

Tax rate up, spending down in M-B budget JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
McNab-Braeside council unanimously passed a 2011 township budget Tuesday that manages to retain core services without up-
ping property taxes significantly despite a reduction in provincial partnership funding. The budget has dropped from almost $5.8 million in 2010 to $4.97 million this year. Last year’s spending was
boosted by a number of projects partially funded by federal-provincial stimulus money and disaster relief funding for flood repairs. This year the only grants received by the township are its
$221,535 gas tax allocation and money to hire two students for the Waba Museum and the recreation department. See ‘RISING COSTS’ Page 3

Dare to Care telethon’s final two cohosts, Art Jamieson and John O’Neill, right, point to the final tally of $21,753 on the screen as telethon co-ordinator Susan Sarsfield and Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home executive director Dennis Harrington applaud.

Care telethon donations still sought, pledge total down from previous years JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
A drop in donations to the Dare to Care telethon Sunday has organizers reminding those who missed making contributions there is still time to support the Care Coach. At the end of the telethon Sunday, the unofficial tally was $21,753 (although donations were still dribbling in). That is substantially below the $31,000 and $30,000 raised in the past two years for the Arnprior-based para-transit program. After the total was announced, Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home executive director Dennis Harrington said the level of service will have to be reviewed. “We’ll have to offer services based on the dollars we have,” he said. The timing of the decrease in pledges is unfortunate as the transportation service for seniors and the disabled is faced with increased costs, particularly with rising gas prices. The drop in donations might have been partly due to a weak economy,
said Harrington. “It certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying.” He stressed there is still time for people to boost the donations to past levels. Contributions can be dropped off to the service weekdays at the Seniors at Home office at 106 McGonigal St. (613-623-7981) or through the website www. cssagency.ca. “It’s not too late. All donations will be gratefully accepted,” he said. People who don’t have access to COGECO, on which the telethon was aired, and others who were away on the weekend, may want to contribute, he added. Harrington said he has been talking to Arnprior officials about receiving town support to make the service eligible for provincial gas tax funding. “Hopefully, we can work something out,” he said. Support from McNab-Braeside could also play a role in obtaining gas tax funding for the Care Coach. Sunday’s seven-hour telethon was held at the St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall and televised live on COGECO Cable 22, as well as on MyFm for a couple
of hours. “Many people made this day possible,” said Harrington. He thanked all those who donated, local businesses for their sponsorship, the COGECO and MyFm staff, and all the volunteers who made the telethon possible by organizing the production, providing the entertainment, manning the phones, and donating draw prizes. The guest hosts included Art Jamieson, John O’Neill, Stephanie Egan, Bill Welychka, Annette Goerner, Michael Harris, Dai Bassett, Peter DeWolf and Chris Kyte. A number of local musicians entertained during the show, including Brad Scott and the Dare to Care house band. Among the prizes of the hourly draws was a wishing well made and donated by George Brown of the Pakenham area. It was won by the Castleford Charity Committee, which had donated $2,000 to the telethon. A Senators Alumni Suite ticket package was won by Charlie Snyder, who contributed another $100 after finding out he won.

Road, beach projects approved McNab-Braeside council approved the calling of tenders Tuesday for two road improvement projects included in the 2011 budget. Scheel Drive will be paved from Russet Drive to Highway 17. The paving of the 3.2-km stretch will cost about $150,000. The Liffey Creek culvert on Milton Stewart Avenue “beyond Glasgow” will be replaced at a cost of about $120,000, a bit more than previously estimated. Council also approved the installation of a second gate and guard rails at Braeside Beach at a cost in the budget of $14,000. The money will come from reserves.
Council also approved the buying of a sign for Red Pine Day to be installed prior to McNab Days next month. Reserve funds will be used. Council was told the old sign has been vandalized beyond repair. Coun. Aldene Styles said the new sign will be similar to what was there before, as well as being consistent with the style of other township signs. Patterson said he is looking into different types of materials that would make the sign both consistent and long-lasting. Campbell thanked the recreation committee for its recommendations and council for following through, noting the beach improvements will be encouraging for the McNab Days River Drive organizers.
Irvin Woermke Rising costs, lost funding a challenge Senior of Year DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
The neighbourhood handyman is getting more than cookies and tea for the good work he has done over many years. Irvin Woermke is the 2011 Arnprior Senior of the Year. Woer mke spent many an afternoon fixing taps, toilets and just about anything else seniors in the Landrigan Street area and elsewhere needed. But he did a IRVIN WOERMKE lot more. Woermke is a life-time board member at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital. He was a school trustee for 40 years when it was localized here in Arnprior. He participated in his church, First Baptist. He worked for Corporate Foods International’s precursor, the Canada Bread Company. Before that he was a mechanic at the Department of Transportation Air Services & Marine Services in Ottawa. That was after he came back from five years overseas with the Air Force. Soon after returning to Canada, Woermke met Dorcus, who agreed to move back to his hometown of Arnprior. His parents will growing older and needed him nearby. It is for his lifetime of care and compassion toward others that led to the phone call last week from Coun. Ted Strike. “It was sort of unexpected,” said Woermke, chuckling. “I’m an old retiree who pretty much keeps out of sight. “It’s quite an honour.” A formal ceremony takes place on July 1.
Continued from front McNab-Braeside has had to absorb a loss of $93,000 in partnership funding this year (on top of last year’s $143,000), so despite the drop in spending, its 2011 tax rate is going up about 2.5 per cent. That raises the tax on a $100,000 property $9.22, although most property-owners face a larger boost because of increased assessment (the average assessment increase in the township for 2011 is six per cent). However, a drop of 7.13 per cent ($29.47 on a $100,000 property) in the county rate and 4.15 per cent ($10) on the school board rate will reduce the bottom line increase for most property-owners. In fact, township treasurer Connie Graham said some property-owners in McNab-Braeside will see their taxes stay about the same and even decrease. If a $100,000 property did not change in assessment in the last year, its taxes would drop about $30 from $1,023 in 2010 to $993 this year. Council hashed out the budget with staff in three main meetings, the last one Monday morning when it dropped the rate increase from 3 to 2.5 per cent. Each department managed to hold the line on spending despite an increase in fuel and utility costs. As well, the full impact of the HST is being felt by the township this year. Mayor Mary Campbell complimented council for being creative and constructive in coming up with a budget that maintains services and contains some investments in infrastructure despite the funding challenges. Despite another significant loss in government funding, the bottom line tax rate has been reduced, she noted. “If that’s not a good news budget, I don’t know what is.” Campbell said this year’s capital projects are “far more modest” than last year’s when there was plenty of government stimulus money. The township is paving Scheel Drive from Russett Drive to Highway 17, replacing the Liffy Creek culvert on Milton Stewart Avenue and going ahead with some modest improvements at Braeside Beach. It is funding the engineer-
ing for improvements to McLachlan and Creek Side roads ($48,000), so to be ready if funding becomes available in future years. However, Campbell Drive work was dropped from the budget. The township also proposes $602,711 in capital projects, with the township spending $235,465 and the senior levels of government $221,535. Another $136,000 will come from reserves. The spending includes $160,000 on a tandem snow plow, $35,000 for road construction and recycle bins at the landfill site, $10,000 for a skid unit for the fire department’s utility brush truck, $8,000 in hoses, $10,000 on a computer for the main office, $6,500 on planning, and $55,000 on assorted recreation projects from a retaining barrier and extra parking on the Burnstown Beach to Braeside rink boards. Department budgets include $91,017 for council expenses (up almost $5,000), general administration $549,563 (down $34,000), fire $358,268 (down about $180,000 because no new fire truck is being bought this year), police $421,497 (up $35,000), roads about $1.5 million, garbage and recycling $700,000, recreation $427,000, and Waba Museum $56,000. Council has also updated the salary grid for staff, bringing it in line with neighbouring municipalities. That has been a goal of council for about six years, said Campbell, noting it will help the township in attracting and retaining staff. The revised grid was passed Tuesday, along with a 2.5 per cent cost of living increase for staff and council in 2011. McNab-Braeside’s share of the Renfrew County levy, just over $2.7 million, will drop about $20,000 this year. The township continues to be fifth highest contributor to the county, with its taxpayers paying 7.94 per cent of its $34.2-million levy. The top four are Petawawa, Laurentian Valley, Arnprior ($3.1 million) and Renfrew ($2.8 million). The township’s share of the property tax bill goes up from 34.15 per cent to $36.16 per cent this year. The county levy takes up 36.7 per cent and the schools $27.14 per cent.

The recreation department recommended the installation as well as suggesting the upper gate remain in place. Recreation director Geoff Patterson said that volunteers have been organized to open and close the upper gate daily, as it is not appropriate to allow access to the park during the night. Coun. Aldene Styles explained that a lower gate is needed to keep cars from going down on the beach. It would be too difficult to move the upper gate down the hill, she added. The new lower gate will only be opened to allow service vehicles access. Mayor Mary Campbell praised the committee for coming up with the second gate idea. It’s a “brilliant solution,” she said.

Landfill concerns expressed as manager’s contract ends DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Poor communication has soured relations between the Town of Arnprior and the company contracted to run the municipal landfill. Coun. Ted Strike, who for decades was the town’s public works director, made it clear at the May 9 council meeting that he is not happy with Topps Environmental Solutions, a small Carleton Place-based company hired three years ago to manage the regional landfill. Council voted down a town staff recommendation to extend the company’s contract by one year. “We should not extend the contract. This is not good value for money,” Strike said, adding he estimates it will cost $50,000 to put the Braeside-located facility in proper condition. The landfill should have – by contract and provincial standards – a defined road system, strict separation between items such as mercury-based goods and organic matter, firm barriers around tire heaps, and no chance that visitors dropping off items will be exposed to sewage sludge from the Arnprior plant. None of that is fully in place, said Janet Collins of the town’s public works and engineering department. But she downplays the seriousness of the situation, saying disagreements arise due to the subjective nature of land-
fill management, and that “it’s a matter of degrees” that some standards are reached while others fall behind. “You shouldn’t be going through sludge to place your garbage,” Collins said. “But how quickly it’s covered, especially in winter – it’s to what degree.” She said staff and a consultant will visit the landfill and compile a list of to-do’s they expect finished before the June 30 contract expires. As for the $50,000, Collins doesn’t have a similar dollar amount in mind. Asked if the company is cutting corners to save money at the end of its contract, and if it could delay making improvements and even drag the process out in court, Collins shrugged. “There is all different avenues,” she said. “That’s way in the air.” Topps owner Howard McRae was clear about his company’s commitment to maintaining its solid reputation. “I’ll have the landfill back and looking good, weather permitting, by the end of this month,” McRae said. “It is our intention to invite council out to review it.” He said Topps spent $12,000 last month on outside-of-the-contract material brought by the town. Both Collins and McRae cited the large amount of material brought to landfill from the renovated waste water facility. But only McRae mentioned that the town vastly underestimated the amount.
He hasn’t decided whether to bid for the contract again, saying town staff turnovers means a new learning curve and different opinions – all of which test clear communication. He added that correspondence with the town hasn’t been good; that expectations are vague at best. However, he did say it is improving over the last
287 Harrington Street, Arnprior
DEREK DUNN Garbage contracts should end at the same time as neighbouring municipalities to qualify for provincial ‘points’, staff advised Arnprior council at the May 9 meeting. Council voted to have all three contracts - curbside and recycling collection, along with landfill operations - end in three years plus a possible two-year extension. The five years will bring it in line with at least one Renfrew contract. “Staff feel that by coinciding the tenders for the garbage, recycling and operation of the landfill,” Janet Collins wrote in a report to council, “the town may see savings in time, money, and a competitive bid process in conjunction with the implementation of waste reduction or diversion goals in future contracts.” Currently the contracts are with: • Renfrew County Recycling Centre (Beaumen Waste Management) for recycling at $524,342 over five years;
• Valley Wide Pumping (Lloyd Cameron) for solid waste collection at $788,505 over five years; • Topps Waste Management for operation of the Arnprior Solid Waste Disposal Site for $1,108,082 over five years. Coun. Walter Stack said he often heard while campaigning door-to-door last October that residents don’t like the bi-weekly pick-up. He wants the bid to include the possibility of returning to weekly pick-up. A fuel surcharge may also appear to account for fluctuating gas prices. A letter will be sent to Beaumen saying the town (in co-operation with other municipalities) isn’t interested in purchasing the company. Many meetings and talks took place during the last council exploring the idea of converting the facility into a publicly-owned operation. The talks began when Beaumen owner Dan Menard indicated he would be retiring in the next year or two, but he has recently indicated he will be keeping the company going for up to five more years.

Talk about hitting a person when they’re down. Thieves used a boulder overnight Sunday to smash out the back window of a car owned by Pakenham Mixed Slo-Pitch League player Lori McGrath of Arnprior and steal $375 in league money. What they likely didn’t know was that McGrath’s car was left in the parking lot of Pakenham’s Stewart Park because the rover for the Ideal Roofing Packers team was injured in a collision with one of her own players. McGrath left the Sunday evening game on a stretcher and was taken by ambulance to Arnprior District Memorial Hospital. NOTHING BROKEN Luckily McGrath suffered no broken bones, but Tuesday she was still in a neck collar, bruised, swollen and sore. And also sore at the thieves who damaged her car and stole much-needed money from the league coffers. Given the crude method of breaking into her car, McGrath suspects the culprits are youth. “If it’s kids who took the money, I’m appealing to them to turn it in, no questions asked,” she said. If any area parents notice their kids have money they shouldn’t have, “get them to give it back,” she added. McGrath can be contacted at 613-623-9238. DIAMOND FEES She learned about the break-in in a call from police Monday morning informing her that her car’s window had been broken and the glovebox ransacked. The money taken had been collected from players to go toward paying diamond fees, trophies and running the canteen, explained McGrath, the league’s treasurer. Anyone seeing anyone acting suspiciously around McGrath’s blue Toyota Corolla parked in the Stewart Park canteen area between 9 p.m. Sunday and early Monday morning should call police. Her stolen cell phone was found nearby at the skateboard park. McGrath said the theft is a shame because it’s a setback for the eight-team league that is making a name for itself in area slo-pitch circles. The league attracts players from all over the Valley and strives to be as inclusive and as much fun as possible, she said. That’s why losing money collected from players hurts so
much. “It’s really important in keeping our costs down as much as humanely possible so more
and more people can come out … have fun and be active,” she said. McGrath said she’d be even more upset
if the theft had happened in August when she collects money from players for a CHEO fundraiser.

Arnprior helps host successful wrestling championship
We encourage our readers to participate in Arnprior’s slogan challenge proposed by the town’s community improvement and tourism advisory committee. It’s a good idea. Talk to others about it, have fun with it, come up with an idea that will stick for years to come. Who wouldn’t be proud to say: ‘I’m the one who came up with the tagline you see on a bunch of town literature’? Here are a few ideas we kicked around the office one afternoon: • Arnprior: We’re better than Renfrew • Arnprior: We got a pool • Arnprior: Gateway to great fishing • Arnprior: The town of two rivers • Arnprior: Bridge to the Upper Ottawa Valley • Arnprior: Small town, big dreams • Arnprior: Welcome to the Prior • Arnprior: Logging our history • Arnprior: Water, water everywhere • Arnprior: Home of the Chronicle-Guide Obviously some of these are meant in fun. After all, that’s the sort of thing that motivates people. We would even welcome plenty of suggestions for our letters to the editor section. There’s no right or wrong, but there is wisdom in quantity when it comes to this sort of exercise. A certain flavour or overall temperament emerges, which can only help the committee to arrive at a more informed decision. We even have a spot on our Facebook page asking for suggestions. Within minutes of posting, we got a number of great ideas! The committee focus group responsible for picking a slogan has narrowed it down to three choices: Arnprior, More than you can Imagine; Arnprior, Where Opportunity Flows and Adventure Grows; Arnprior, Home to Opportunities and Adventures. However, they are open to hearing more suggestions and are by no means committed to the three mentioned above. The slogan would, ideally, be selected before Renfrew County’s 150th anniversary celebrations beginning on June 9. We would like to see the contest continue until the right slogan is found, not simply the best one that meets a particular deadline. Our final suggestion? A simply-stated double entendre. • Arnprior: It’s in our nature.

Dumping makes mess of marina hill To the editor: An open letter to Arnprior Public Works regarding illegal dumping. This is, of course, a common problem in certain areas of Arnprior. One spot in particular is becoming increasingly popular for disposing of tires, electronics, patio furniture and so on: the extreme east end of Lake Street and behind the Catholic church parking lot. Dumpers only need to drive in and stand at the top of the steep hill and toss. There is no fence or barrier (strange for a street ending on a steep hill) and no signs. The hill is likely town property, which drops down to the marina. The closest residents hold bonfires in the bush at the top - dangerous as well. Much of the debris may originate with them. The accumulating trash along

that hill is an eyesore in spring and fall and not great for tourism boaters to view. Items roll down to the bottom and pile up next to the marina road. A couple years ago, a large group of volunteers cleaned up that exact spot. So the present trash is recent. The Town and St. John Chrysostom Parish should partner in an effort to cut off this practice by fencing and placing ‘no dumping’ signs from the church over to the cemetery boundary. In addition, discreet signs need to be placed in the cemetery discouraging visitors from tossing pails, decorations, etc. down the hill toward the millennium trail. If we are going to advertise ‘Visit Beautiful Arnprior’, we’d better start beautifying it.

Charles O’Connor Arnprior
To the editor: I want to thank everyone who helped make this past weekend a success when the Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Club, along with the Arnprior Wrestling Club, hosted the Eastern Canadian Wrestling Championships at Ma-Te-Way Activity Center. Our communities came together and the co-operation, help and openness was truly amazing. The MAC staff was excellent, not only doing their job but going out of their way all weekend to help make the event spectacular. At every turn I was hearing them say, “Is there anything else we can do?” We had underestimated how many athletes would attend and with over 360 wrestlers this event became one of, if not the largest Eastern Canadian Championships in history; perhaps because our Canadian friends know Renfrew puts on a good show. We had so many attending that on Friday, our first day, we ran out of food to feed those in attendance. Metro came to our aid – big time – and we managed to get the job done. Budget provided a courtesy van in the event athletes or parents or coaches needed transportation throughout the two towns. So many local businesses jumped in financially to help and it would be impossible to list them all; others placed welcome wrestler signs on their doors. Thank you to MPP John Yakabuski and Mayor Bill Ringrose for taking part in the opening ceremonies. It was unfortunate that our local pipe band, MP and mayor of Arnprior could not attend. Those who sat on the organizing committee were exceptional. Shane Smith, Tracey Doucette, Cathy Brash, Nancy Lyons, Janine LaFont, Tina Smith, Larry Hanniman, Kevin Mayhew and Lynda Tabbert. Each had countless help. The committee would like to thank all the volunteers who undoubtedly made us look good and made our communities look even better, thank each and every one of you. With over 360 athletes plus parents, coaches, managers, and others we feel that this helped the local economy and at the same time brought pride to Renfrew as our local team won of the five of the six team titles up for grabs in this competition. Next year we will be off to this event in P.E.I. Let’s see if they can put on as good of show.

To the editor: Once again I find myself correcting some facts in a recent Chronicle-Guide article. When you ran the story of the Army vehicle being placed in front of the Arnprior Legion, I wrote you then to express my concern over the fact that you had incorrectly called the Armored Personnel Carrier (M113 APC) a ‘tank’. Now I am compelled once again to correct your obvious mistakes. The “Born to Run” and “Military Run” article in the May 12 paper incorrectly call the vehicle pictured a tank. I can assure you that this vehicle is most certainly not a tank of any kind. Firstly a tank (or Main Battle Tank MBT) weighs approximately 50-70 metric tons, has tracks and is not suitable to be driven on (most) public roads (it would tear them to shreds). The turret alone on the MBT weighs about the same as the entire LAV. The vehicle in your picture is a wheeled vehicle of approximately 20 tons (40,000 lb.) is meant for an entirely different role. It is called a Light Armored Vehicle (or LAV). Light Armored Vehicle, not heavy. This particular LAV is called a LAV III and is built by General Dynamics Land Systems in London Ontario (see top photo). Below is a picture of a MB Tank. You will please note the “subtle” differences. Please attempt to get your facts correct in future. Military types are rather particular about these things. Calling a LAV a tank is like calling a VW beetle a Hummer or a Cessna a CF18.

McNab-Braeside seeks Expo display items JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
McNab-Braeside is looking for photographs and other items depicting life in the township for its municipal booth at Renfrew County’s Expo 150. The township and the Waba Museum will be promoting the municipality with displays at the Expo to be held at the Pembroke airport June 9 to 12. Deputy Mayor Christine Blimkie told council May 17 that she could use more photographs for the booth. Jim Austin and other Waba Museum volunteers are providing heritage display items, she said. Blimkie said Expo provides an excellent opportunity to promote McNab Days, which happens later in June. She asked if she could use up to $250 from the
WARM WABA WELCOME The Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens opens this Saturday, May 21 for the season with the annual plant sale beginning at 8 a.m. The museum welcomes new summer student Julie Trudeau of White Lake, who just completed her first year of the applied museum studies program at Algonquin College. Gardening student Jayme Hass is another welcome addition to the staff, say museum officials. The museum building will be open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Wednesdays to Sundays, including statutory holidays until Thanksgiving.
Volunteers, items needed for museum’s Expo 150 exhibit SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com
Members of the Renfrew County Museum Network are hard at work preparing for the June 9-12 Renfrew County Expo 150 and Arnprior’s team could use some help. Arnprior and District Museum curator Janet Carlile has put out a call for items and/or volunteers to put together Arnprior’s contribution - a general store that will be combined with features from other communities to make a historic display depicting life for Renfrew County residents at the turn of the century. The network’s exhibit will have a storytelling theme and among the tale twisters will be some local favourites, including Doug Scheels and Gord Bethume. “There will be lots of older shopkeepers from Arnprior and McNab-Braeside,” says Carlile. Volunteers could use some help preparing the exhibit, which will be brought up to the Pembroke Airport for the event. “We are in search of a couple of things to help with this exhibit,” says Carlile. Items the museum would
like to have donated or loaned include: a wooden screen door – preferably Victorian-looking and tall; a bench; bolts of gingham, calico and plain-coloured cloth; old pop bottles and glass jars with lids; old tea and coffee tins; antique signs – reproductions or originals; bags, bushels and baskets; The museum could also use some extra sets of hands – especially those with carpentry or other skills that could be helpful to the project. Among the building projects needing completion is a for-display-only outhouse. “It’s really dependent on volunteers,” says Carlile. “Whatever help people would like to give it’s appreciated.” Also needed are volunteers for set-up and take-down and other tasks during the event. The Arnprior Museum will benefit after the anniversary celebration, too, as the store will be on display in Arnprior for visitors to enjoy. Within the museum network’s exhibit will be a log cabin, stopping place/hotel, kitchen, bedroom and parlor. If you can help, email jcarlile@ arnprior.ca or call 613-623-4902.
Charity garage sale this Saturday Arnprior’s Jim Short recently travelled to Costa Rica for CCSVI liberation therapy to help ease the debilitating symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Help support his medical journey at a garage sale this Satur-
day, May 21 at 50 Mulvihill Cres., Arnprior. Sale items range from furniture to costume jewellery to bunk beds. Rain date is May 22. Call 613623-1961 for information.
McNab Days budget for the booth. Most other county municipalities are supporting their booths, she noted. When councillors expressed reluctance to use the McNab Days budget, Township CAO Noreen Mellema suggested a one-time use of funds from the administrative public relations budget, because the booth will be promoting the township. Mayor Mary Campbell suggested some of the township’s developers might want to highlight their subdivisions. The township should also promote its recreational facilities, such as the Burnstown Beach, and its much admired fire department, she said. What to put in the McNab-Braeside display is open for discussion as the township’s identity is still evolving, she added.

Optimists look back on 50 years of service to community and youth JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
The Arnprior Optimist Club celebrated 50 years of service to with a gala gathering at the Arnprior Golf Club Saturday. The celebration began with Arnprior Optimist president Robbie Burton welcoming 95 past and current members and special guests. Burton said later called the evening a great success with everyone “having a blast.” In his speech, he said the club’s service to the youth of Arnprior and area was made possible by the continued support from the community and the dedication of hardworking volunteer Optimist club members. “I can only surmise that on June 12, 1961 that the 39 Charter members who brought Arnprior into the Optimist fold had a vision for its longevity and success. Here we are 50 years later going as strong as ever, adapting to an every changing world, and more importantly maintaining our focus on the youth and the future in our community,” he said. “We should all be proud.” Burton said the club conservatively estimates that it has raised and given back close to $2 million to the community. Donations have been made to schools for academics, sport and graduation exercises, children with special mobility needs, Arnprior minor hockey, Arnprior School of Dance and the Arnprior wrestling Club among many others. The club also pledged $100,000 to the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital’s Partners in Caring Campaign. He pointed out that club members have donated thousands of man hours to initiatives such as the Optimist Winter Carnival, Bike Rodeo, Canada Day and the building of the Optimist baseball damond. A number of people were recognized during the evening, including two original charter members, Lorne Bretzlaff and John Scardino, who were given a round of applause. Given an honourable mention was Peter McLaughlin, the club’s
longest serving charter member of 47 years, who was not able to attend. Also recognized were Ed Murphy, Arnprior’s only Lt.-Governor (1984); past president Chris Toner for his outstanding work over the last two years, former member Bob Wikman and his wife Margo who attended from Michigan; and Arthur McLean who has been an active member for 44 years. Optimist International Lt.-Governor Brian Ralph from Kingston and Governor Jim Lynge sent congratulations. Arnprior Mayor David Reid gave a brief speech and a presented a Certificate of Congratulations to the club on behalf of council and residents of Arnprior. It read: “In recognition of providing hope, positive vision and a desire to make a difference in our community through the development of youth.” Sandy Bellerose from Arnprior M&M Meat Shops thanked the Optimist Club for its support to the tune of $46,000 of their annual barbecue for Crohn’s and Colitis. She presented a hand-written thank you note from M&M chairman Mac Voisin. During the evening, several testimonials were read from St. Joseph’s Catholic School, McNab Public School, John XXIII and Walter Zadow in appreciation 464118

The club also gave out accolades, as Arnprior parks and recreation director Glenn Arthur was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation. The certificate read: “Congratulations for being a ‘Friend of Youth’ and for developing Optimism as a philosophy of life, on promoting an active interest in the community and for many years of assisting the Arnprior Optimist Club and various youth organizations in the Town of Arnprior.” Before formal activities began, all were invited to browse through Arnprior Mayor David Reid presents Arnprior Optimist president Rob50 years of Optimist memorabilia bie Burton with a Certificate of Congratulations on behalf of town and to catch up with old friends. council and residents. News
Distracted drivers targeted The OPP are cracking down on distracted drivers May 16-23 in a Canada Road Safety Week campaign. Police point out that distracted driving is one of the four major causes of death and injury on Ontario roads. The ‘big four’ factors are aggressive driving, lack of occupant restraint, impaired driving and distracted driving. In 2010, there were 7,733 collisions on OPP-patrolled roads where the driver was deemed to be inattentive/distracted, resulting in 35 deaths, 1,040 injuries and considerable property damage. In the Renfrew OPP Detachment area, which includes McNab-Braeside, there have been 17 deaths and 388 persons injured in vehicle collisions over the last three and a half years. “These are just numbers, but they represent a lot of pain and heartache that could have been prevented for members of our community,” say police. “That is why, in support of Canada Road Safety Week, we are participating in educational and enforcement activities that will support
Local police week message: Everyone can help fight crime
our public safety mandate to save lives and reduce crime on our highways.” Renfrew OPP report this week they charged a 77-year-old driver with careless driving after his vehicle rear-ended another that was stopped for construction along the highway. Distracted driving can be defined as any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from driving and can include adjusting the stereo, searching for something in the car, eating or drinking while driving, using a handheld device and watching television or other entertainment devices. Section 78 of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario makes it illegal in Ontario for drivers to use any handheld communications and entertainment devices (not exclusive to cell phones) except as outlined as permissible in the Act. Safe driving requires full attention, stress police. “Please do your part to create safer highways by giving your full attention to driving when behind the wheel.”
Everyone in Arnprior can play an important role in making the community safer, Staff Sergeant Mike Forster said Tuesday in a Police Week in Ontario (May 15-21) message. The police’s partnership with the community is essential in preventing crime and making citizens safer, said Forster. “The police can’t do it alone. We need the support of every resident of Arnprior.” He noted that Police Week is “a great op-
portunity to engage people in our community on topics such as crime prevention programs and community policing.” The theme of Police Week 2011 is ‘Working Together for a Safer Community’. Police Week is being marked in Arnprior with recognition of the Arnprior Community Policing Committee and its 20 years of service. The Arnprior OPP detachment will be reviewing and renewing crime prevention
programs with the committee to ensure focus is on crime prevention strategies to reduce victimization. One such program is called ‘Lock it or Lose it’. Over the next few months, the detachment will be introducing all members of Arnprior OPP to the public through articles in the Arnprior-Chronicle Guide. Police Week is an opportunity to show appreciation to police and their community partners for keep communities safe.

ADHS dominates county track and field meet STEVE NEWMAN Steve.newman@metroland.com
There was a sea of red at the Renfrew County high school track and field meet, as the Arnprior District High School Redmen dominated for the second straight year. The Renfrew Collegiate Institute Raiders used to prevail at this meet. Before last year’s meet, the Raiders had won the titles 14 times in 16 years. Now the Redmen have won two straight years and are looking to start a long win streak of their own. They certainly showed they meant business at Wednesday’s (May 11) meet in Arnprior by more than doubling the Raiders’ totals. Final unofficial totals showed ADHS with 1,083 points, RCI 505, Fellowes High School, 352, General Panet 258, Bishop Smith 195, Opeongo 141, Mackenzie 136, MVDHS of Barry’s Bay 118, St. Joseph’s 116.5, Jeanne Lajoie 59, and Ecole L’Equinoxe 14.5. Several Raiders advanced to this week’s Eastern Ontario Secondary School Association meet in Brockville, but the Redmen ruled the roost, with 72 qualifiers from 108 individual competitors. “That’s the biggest thing,” said Joe Lavoie, one of the Redmen coaches. “We were certainly thrilled to repeat, and hopefully we’ll continue to build and three-peat next year.” Seven meet records also fell, including five to the Redmen. Leading the way was junior Jacob Plunkett, whose 100- and 200-metre times of 11.4 and 23.3 seconds bettered the for-
mer meet records of 11.5 and 23.9. That was no surprise, considering he had fifth-place finishes at the 2010 OFSAA meet in hurdles and the 4 x 100-metre relay. After winning last week’s junior boys’ 100-metre final, the 16-year-old Plunkett said, “I just wanted to win. I didn’t really go for a time.” The Redmen also set records in two field events. One was junior high jump, as Cody Moore’s 1.70-metre jump broke teammate Justin Cameron’s mark of 1.66; the other Taylor Doran to win the senior girls pole vault in 2.15 metres. The Redmen’s final meet mark, of 45.2 seconds, came in the senior boys’ 4 x 100-metre relay. The record fell despite the team using two runners who hadn’t competed in the senior 100-metre final in which the Redmen placed 1-2-3-4. In the relay, the lead-off was Jesse Andrews, who won the long jump and 200. He was followed, in order, by Sean Dey, who was a close second in the 100, Ty Jesse Andrews finds some height in the senior boys’ long jump. Also in on the play in centre of the photo are Arnprior players Ashlynn Sullivan and Alexx Zoryk. ADHS earned a come-from-behind 22-14 title game win over a tough Rockland squad, after crushing LaSalle in the semi-final. It qualifies the Redmen for a berth in the Ontario championship tournament in Peterborough May 30 to June 1.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU FROM HOSPICE RENFREW The staff and organizers of Hospice Renfrew’s 5th Annual Hike for Hospice would like to send out thanks to all the volunteers, participants and corporate sponsors who made this year’s hike a success! With the help of the community, $43,882.15 has been raised so far, and pledges are still coming in. People hiked, biked, ran and rolled their way down the Millennium trail in remembrance of loved ones and in support of a local cause close to the hearts of many. Money received at events like this help Hospice Renfrew remain free of charge to all residents of Renfrew County. A special thank you goes out to our lead hikers, the Emergency Service Workers. They seem to always see us at our worst and this was a great way to see them working as community ambassadors! You are truly a vital part of what makes this community a safe place to live. The memory board was an amazing piece of work, thanks to Diana Wakely. Memories of this day will last forever because of the photos taken by Carrie MacMillan and her helpers, thank you. Forty Creek did an amazing job, playing the tunes that got us moving for the warm-up led by Paul and Sarah from Ultimate Fitness. Thank you for giving of your time. The muffins made by Connie Watchorn were great along with the other treats prepared by her volunteers. Margi, the coffee was great. Metro and Medigas also helped with food Thank you. Thanks to The Bossy Family for manning the water station at Mateway and to McGregor’s Produce for supplying the tents so we were protected from the elements. Thanks to Breen Insurance, Valley Signs, TF Custom Signs for helping with Hike promotions. Thank you to Brian Stokes for helping with the site set-up and to Renfrew Home Hardware for lending their new trailer to be our stage. The staff from the Town of Renfrew did an awesome job getting the park and trail ready. Dragonfly Golf Links generously donated their tables, chairs, coolers and golf cart for the day. Thanks Marshall Ray for driving around in the cart to make sure everyone was doing OK. Thanks to the parishioners of the Renfrew Presbyterian Church for letting us use their facility. Thanks to Barb Westgarth for setting up our new website. www.hikeforhospicerenfrew.ca Thanks to the ladies who walked in the rain on Friday picking up garbage so others could appreciate the beauty of our area, thanks also for staying behind and picking up after us. Thanks to the ladies who handed out T-shirts and teddy bears. The face-painting was a hit for young and old, thanks to the high school students. The ladies from RBC did a remarkable job looking after the business side of the day and Leo the Lion was again adorable. Thanks to the media, especially MyFM for major sponsorship, and for the Renfrew Mercury and Cogeco for being there the day of the event. The hours of media coverage you have given us is so appreciated. Mark Papousek and Jamie Cybulski did a tremendous job being our master of ceremonies. We are truly blessed by a very generous community. If we missed anyone we are truly sorry. We hope to see everyone out next year! The Hike for Hospice Renfrew Committee

Muskie chasers and the charities they support are confident they’ll land a lot of fundraising dollars this summer. The Ottawa Valley Muskie Club, led by fishing great Bill Craig, has a number of events planned for every angler, be they
kids, first timers, even women. The club is composed of more than 30 members living in many Valley communities, including Arnprior and Ottawa. It promotes the region, related businesses and sustainable fishing practices. June 4 is the annual Ice Breaker tournament held on the Madawaska River. The cost is $25, with registration available at ottawavalleymuskieclub.com and the Antrim Truck Stop. “It’s a good start to the season for us,” Craig said. “The biggest fish takes all.” Last year $425 went to the winner and
“They’ll all walk away with gifts,” he said of the free event. July 23 is the Women’s Fishing Day with the biggest fish taking the trophy. Contestants will meet at 7 or 8 a.m. at Eastside Mario’s in Arnprior. The $10 fee covers a barbecue lunch that breaks up the day-long tournament. A banquet is held after 6 p.m. “We are the first club around to have a women’s committee,” Craig said. “We took some girls out last year and they loved it.
$425 went to Capital City Condors, a hockey club for special needs kids. July 10 is Kids’ Fishing Day with five or six boats of muskie experts willing to take boys and girls out on the mighty Ottawa River. About a dozen kids between the ages are signed up already; although they’ve reached capacity, Craig said he has a back-up list for last minute cancellations. Just call him at 613-622-0673. The event runs from 8 a.m. to noon, with a barbecue to follow. The top five will get rods and reels, but Craig said it’s more of an “everyone wins” day.

Sports Fish your wish Continued from Page 25 Aug. 27 and 28 is the Team Tournament, which runs in conjunction with Arnprior’s White Pine Festival. The boat with the most fish in inches wins. The group hopes to raise $1,500 for charity. The club meets monthly at Buster’s Bar and Grill on Carling Avenue in Ottawa and elsewhere. The tackle swap
is popular, as is the bait fish slide show, among other presentations. Craig said the group is made up of easy-going, good guys who share a passion for fishing one of the continent’s largest rivers. “The Ottawa is a class spot to chase fish. Walleye, bass, everything,” he said. “You’ve always got a good chance of catching something really great.”

As part of a fun-filled day, Burnstown United Church is proud to announce that author and radio story-teller Mary Cook will be sharing some of her stories at their church on Saturday, May 28. The festivities start at 1:30 p.m, with Cook’s story-telling to be followed by an authentic Celtic tea. Cook was born and raised in the Ottawa Valley. Her wonderful stories of growing up in the Depression on a farm in Renfrew County were broadcast over the CBC for many years and are now heard on Valley Heritage Radio every Saturday morning. As well, she continues to write for many newspapers and magazines. She has carved a niche as one of Eastern Ontario’s most prolific writers, folklorists, and historians. Cook is the author of 11 books, with the latest one, ‘This then was Home’, published in fall 2007. Her books give a true and colourful history of life in Canada during the Depression years, and are used extensively by teachers. One of her stories, which appears in ‘Liar Liar Pants on Fire’, is included in a Grade 6 reader. Many of her stories are in tape form for the visually impaired and she receives no remuneration for these much loved narrations. Following the story-telling, enjoy an authentic Celtic Tea created by Mary Campbell of Glendochart Farm in McNabBraeside. Her menu will include Devonshire teas, smoked salmon and spinach tarties, Highland Chicken puffs, Celtic Beef balls, shortbread and buttered Scotch tarts. The cost is $15 to enjoy both Cook’s reminisces as well as the Celtic Tea. Tickets may be obtained at the door or from Jane Flain at 613-433-3389. Earlier in the day, Burnstown United Church will be busy with a plant and bake sale from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch begins at 11 a.m., with soup and sandwich for $5. A silent auction will be open to take bids during the day, closing at the end of the Celtic Tea. All proceeds will go to the Burnstown United Church’s operating fund.

ROPED IN FOR FUNDRAISER FUN Pakenham Public School office administrator Cathy Clouthier of Arnprior took a pie full of whipped cream to the face on freaky Friday – May 13. She was student Nick Coe’s first pick of staff members to receive a pie in the face. It was Coe’s reward for raising the most money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation in the intermediate level. The small school of 124 students raised over $4,000 through Jump Rope for Heart. A portion of all proceeds donated to the Food Bank.

Arnprior joined McDonald’s restaurants across the country May 11 for McHappy Day, raising funds for children’s charities. The Arnprior store raised $2,776, while $15,000 was raised across the Ottawa Valley. Above, Arnprior Fire Chief John Okum approaches his duties with the same diligent enthusiasm he brings to his department tasks. Below, McDonald’s manager Lana Schnob presents Arnprior District High School teacher Kate McKenna with a certificate of appreciation for her participation.

Nature
The Backyard diaries Part 1 - With a book deadline fast approaching, my naturalist activities are currently confined to strolls Michael Runtz on my property. Nature’s Way I try to do an early morning walk before I settle down with my computer for the day. Many of my columns over the past 10 years have been inspired by natural history encounters in my own backyard. The walk takes past the feeders, still fully stocked with seeds. A half dozen Rose-breasted Grosbeaks still go for the sunflower seeds, and it is amusing to watch the one-year old males, told by the incompleteness of their black hoods, get displaced by the older dominant males, much more sharply dressed in comparison. Behind the feeders lies a hill beyond which junipers and red cedars decorate the moss- and lichen-drenched rock. Here I am inevitably greeted by the “drink-your-teeeeeee” of an Eastern Towhee. The trail eventually meanders into a young forest where ironwoods and beeches rule supreme. Two red cedars guard the forest entry point. This is my best site for encountering migrating warblers. Recently a stunning Northern Parula and a tail-wagging, misnamed Palm Warbler (it is a bog-nester!) greeted me there. The trail wanders through the forest and back out to another open expanse where the whistles of a Field Sparrow predictably descend from a tall poplar, and a second Eastern Towhee sings out his territorial decree. Often a Turkey Vulture passes by on its low level flight, its long wings frozen in a diagnostic dihedral.
When a vulture sits sideways you can see daylight right through its nostrils for there is no barrier between their openings, a feature likely tied to its remarkable ability to detect the odour of death from a kilometre or more away. The trail passes through a small tract of forest where I stopped to photograph a white trillium on my last walk. As I admired the flower’s yellow stamens (flowers have no hang-ups about having their sex organs on full display!) through my lens, I heard a hoarse cough behind me. I then heard a large creature approach and to my surprise a large doe loomed into view. I resisted the temptation to grab my camera (I felt the movement would scare it) and the deer came within a few metres of me before it saw me. It stared for a moment then bolted away. Past the trillium lies a rocky slope that leads to another open ridge, the highest point in our area. The view from the top is spectacular, with a swampy creek and a piece of Cranberry Lake both in view. From this vantage point I have watched Bald Eagles soar and Wild Turkeys display in the farmer’s field behind the creek. Next week I will take you on the return leg of the trail! You can still sponsor my 24hour Baillie Birdathon taking place May 27/28. The event raises money for bird conservation. You can donate on-line (http:// www.gifttool.com/athon/Catego ryDetails?ID=1914&CID=212 - follow the sponsor link to me) or you can email your pledge to me. You can pledge a set amount or an amount per species I find. Donations are tax receipted. The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

The rain didn’t deter supporters of the Arnprior and District Humane Society Saturday. The group held a successful yard sale at the shelter. A large number of bargainhunters were at the gates when the sale opened. “We sold a ton of stuff,” said fundraising co-ordinator Brenda Ambrose. Shelter staff and board members thank all the buyers and those who donated sale items. Next up for the society is its largest fundraiser of the year, the Walk in the Park Sunday, June 12, The annual walk-a-thon will be held in Robert Simpson Park, with registration at 11 a.m. and the walk starting at noon. Pledge forms available at the animal shelter on Didak Drive, Pet Valu in Arnprior and Renfrew, and on the website at

However, all donations are important as it’s the participation that raises awareness of the need for the animal shelter. Organizers note there are long and short routes to walk. People don’t even have to walk, but are invited to enjoy a day in the park.
