Real deal Last-minute agreement averts strike at Arnprior Aerospace JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

The picket shifts were being organized and the picket signs readied. However, a last-minute deal has averted what seemed late week an inevitable strike at Arnprior Aerospace. Both the company and the members of the International Association of Machinists (IAM), Local 1542, ratified a new two-year agreement Tuesday. Word of a deal caused a feeling of relief in the community, as a strike would have put about 400 people out of work for what many had predicted would be a long time. A lengthy labour dispute involving so many workers from up and down the Valley could have had a major effect on the local economy. “I think we’re all relieved that a new collective agreement is in place,” said Arnprior Aerospace human resources director Brent Pierce. Robert Verch led the group and penned a letter to council, most of who were visibly impressed with the show of civic activism. Continued from front “It has pothole after pothole and been patched and patched,” Verch said. “It’s deplorable. We think it should be paved.” The ideal situation would have seen the group arrive during budget season, usually in December, to give council a chance to consider it for the priority list. During the last few budget deliberations, roads such as Landrigan and Edward streets were pegged as important to repair. The group made it clear, though, that it didn’t want to wait any longer for theirs to be done. It is paving season and they want – not repairs – a complete repave. “You have our attention,” said Mayor David Reid. “You’ll get an answer back.” The issue was forwarded to staff for its recommendation. It was a busy night at council with many issues discussed, deferred or decided upon. • A James Street resident is worried traffic and parking will increase if the zoning is changed nearby to accommodate a possible fitness centre. Staff said the change would force the owner to comply with new standards. An expanded parking lot is planned. • Arnprior District High School is getting a noise bylaw exemption for its Relay For Life overnight event this coming June 3.
• Coun. Mark Willmer asked his leave of absence from council duties, which he has requested be without pay, be extended until June 14. Council agreed to extend it until Aug. 31, though hoping his medical condition will improve by the date Willmer suggested. • The province will pay a consultant at least $6,500 to co-ordinate a partnership between the towns of Arnprior and Renfrew for curbside and recycling collection. Reeve Walter Stack said there is only one taxpayer and couldn’t understand why staff from two municipalities would have trouble overseeing joint tendering and other processes. Staff explained it will only cost the town a small portion, $812, and that the process is too complex. • It will cost the town $26,000 less than budgeted for to redo a portion of the Nick Smith Centre roof. Adanac Roofing was the lowest of three bids, coming in at $118,500. Recreation director Glenn Arthur was quick to add that he has a few ideas for the remainder of the money. Council will decide what to do with it at another time. • Bonnie Labelle won another fiveyear contract to perform janitorial services at the Arnprior and District Museum. She will start out at $22 an hour (cleaning supplies included) and finish 2016 at $24 an hour. • Coun. Ted Strike suggested the town toss out use of town property at the corner of Daniel and Edey streets
to the highest bidder. But council decided to allow J.P. Mulvihill and Son to continue paying about $135 a year to keep a sign on the land. Stack said if someone else wanted to put a sign there they would have approached council earlier. • Coun. Lynn Grinstead said she is still accepting town tagline suggestions, but they must reflect both “economic development” and “tourism.” When she shared her top three picks with council, no one chose to comment. A first public focus group session was held Wednesday, with the second set for 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at the Kenwood Corporate Centre. • Plans for the town’s year-long 150th anniversary festivities include a lumberjack contest, fishing derby, old-time music, historic re-enactment, quilt contest, dunk tank, barn dance under a tent at the agricultural fair lands, outdoor movie for teens, video game tournament, and the confirmed world broomball tournament this fall. The town’s community improvement and tourism committee encourages volunteer groups to take on any of these ideas and offer to bring it to life. • Staff is studying the possibility of a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Moe Robillard and Spruce streets, and Melville Road. There could also be ‘no parking’ signs erected on the west side of Moe Robillard, along with other signs.

New Aerospace offer breaks deadlock Dr Paul Sly Chiropractor

Continued from front “Now we can go back to focusing on satisfying our customers,” added Pierce. International Association of Machinists (IAM), negotiator Bill Shipman said workers are glad to finally receive an offer they could accept. They know they have to “work hard and work smart to make the company productive,” he said. Shipman said the offer received just prior to the planned strike Saturday was a far cry from the first two from the company. The company had originally demanded the workers sign a five-year deal, which contained significant concessions, including a wage cut up to 18 per cent. That prompted one union official to call it the “worst first offer” he had ever encountered. In negotiations with a mediator May 17-18, the company reduced its demands, but the union said the concessions still amounted to about 12 per cent. The key issue was protecting the workers’ pension plan, said Shipman, noting it had been in existence for many years. “That was really a priority with us.” He said the union members’ solidarity in rejecting the company’s first two offers in overwhelming no votes proved to the company that the workers were serious. Both times

He agreed that if the company hadn’t altered their offer, the resulting outage could have been lengthy. “It would have been a big blow all over the Valley,” he added. While it was touch and go for a time last week, the agreement was reached without any down time for the former Boeing plant, which manufactures aircraft parts.

the majority was in the 90 per cent-plus range. “They (company) knew we were ready to go on strike,” he said. With a Saturday morning strike looming, the company tendered another offer that retained the pension plan and “for the most part” took the concessions off the table in return for a shorter term (two years). Shipman said the accepted deal also includes some limited cost-of-living adjustments and potential profit-sharing for workers. “I don’t know when and

Postal talks hang in the balance JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
A postal strike has been averted, at least temporarily. However, with both sides expressing dismay with the other’s offer, a strike could come as early as this weekend. With talks continuing, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) indicated there would be no action before Saturday. Despite the saber-rattling, particularly on pensions, both sides have indicated a commitment to reach a settlement. CUPW presented a proposal Sunday covering several areas including job security, wages and benefits, health and safety and staffing. It is upset that the corporation is suggesting the starting rate for new employees be reduced significantly. Canada Post, which is struggling with new technological competition to traditional mail communication, expressed disappointment with several aspects of the offer. The corporation claimed the offer represents a “step backwards” and “provides
no realistic solutions to the problems facing the postal system.” It charges the union’s offer would add $1.4 billion of new costs to Canada Post over the life of the contract without providing any compromises to address the challenges facing the company. Already struggling with declining letter mail volumes, Canada Post says it would need to raise the price of postage by 15 per cent or request government support to cover the increased costs put forward by the union. CUPW claims its offer is fair considering the pressure rising costs are putting on its membership. In its latest offer, the union has requested a 3.5 per cent wage increase in each year of a new three-and-a-half-year agreement and has asked that its members perform snow removal and landscape design at Canada Post offices. Canada Post’s offer provides for annual wage increases, job security and the continuation of an annual cash bonus tied to the company’s performance. The two sides have been bargaining for eight months.

In the beginning, there was some confusion as to what had actually happened, with many believing the truck had struck the woman. Dougherty said that it wasn’t until interviewing the woman and her husband at the hospital and further investigation at the scene that police realized the woman hadn’t been struck by the vehicle. Response times And while some on-scene complaints criticized police for their response times, everything worked as it should, explained Dougherty. Many people don’t understand how the dispatch system works, he said. The ambulance is called and paramedics assess the scene upon arrival and
call police as needed. “We don’t go to every ambulance call,” said Dougherty. When the police were requested, officers were conducting a RIDE program near Antrim Truck Stop. Holiday weekend traffic was already starting to back up on Highway 17. The call came into Arnprior OPP at 1:14:52 p.m., one of the units at the RIDE program was dispatched at 1:15 p.m. and had the RIDE stuff packed up and was en route by 1:16 p.m. “It took six minutes for the RIDE people to get to the scene,” said Dougherty. “These times are perfect.” Police attended the Arnprior incident, laid charges, directed traffic and were on scene for about a half-hour.

An Arnprior senior’s quick actions saved a Friday afternoon pedestrian accident from being much worse than it was. Police were called to the scene at the intersection of Madawaska Boulevard and Jack Crescent just after 1 p.m. Friday. An elderly couple was walking across the intersection and had the right-ofway, when a Beaumen recycling truck crossed their paths, explained Arnprior OPP Sgt. Her injuries were a result of his quick thinking.” Charges were laid against the driver of the truck for failing to yield to pedestrians. Renfrew OPP report attending an assault call in which a volunteer firefighter had a garden hose turned on him while responding to a yard fire in Horton. The incident was “resolved informally, say police.

A working smoke alarm played a major role in limiting damage and ensuring no one was hurt in a recent fire at a McNab-Braeside home. The McNab-Braeside Volunteer Fire Department reports that on Saturday, May 7 at about 6:15 p.m., it was dispatched to a house on fire on Calabogie Road. When the first fire truck arrived, firefighters observed smoke coming out a basement window at the front of the house. The homeowner was working outside at the time of the fire and was not aware of the fire until a neighbour came over to investigate after hearing the smoke alarms sounding from the house. “You can see why our department is so committed to smoke alarm education from a situation like this, said Karen Barsoski, McNab-Braeside Fire Department prevention officer. “With early detection of a fire and people being alert to the danger, no one was injured and fire crews were able to respond quickly and stop the fire from spreading. After confirming there was a fire, the homeowner called 911 and fire crews were on the scene within minutes and were able to contain the fire to the basement. “This was definitely a successful fire stop due to the fact that the home owner had just installed new smoke alarms and was able to call the fire department so quickly, said Barsoski. “The homeowner needs to be commended for having smoke alarms installed and working. This fire could have been much worse. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The fire department has been visiting homes in the township as part of their Smoke Alarm Inspection Program for the past five years and is gearing up to start inspections again this month. The Ontario Fire Code requires all residential dwellings have working smoke alarms installed on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Non-compliance can result in a fines starting at $235 per infraction. For more information, contact Barsoski at 613-623-5756.

Elephant on the waterfront
Women do fish muskie To the editor: Women fishing Muskie, what’s next? I am writing in regards to your article about the Ottawa Valley Muskie Club. On Oct. 18, 1929, Lord Sankey, Lord Chancellor of the Privy Council, announced the British Privy Council decision that “yes, women are persons ... and eligible to be summoned and may become Members of the Senate of Canada.” Well, hey now, in 2011 Bill Craig has even included women in muskie fishing! What? next thing you know they’ll be driving boats too! You will have to pardon me because it is unclear if the statement about including every angler ... even women was a direct quote of Bill Craig or Derek Dunn. But I have to say, wake up boys! The statement might have been acceptable if you were talking about the family dog. And for your info, yes there are even women fishing muskie out there.
P
oliticians are fond of putting off any decisions today that can be saved for tomorrow. It keeps them from upsetting voters. The good thing about newly elected politicians, in many cases, is that they are eager to get things done. Call it hubris, or courage. Either way they have something to teach career politicians. It’s the courage part that had many voters cast a ballot for Mayor David Reid, a successful developer. Let’s hope he is soon ready to make a few moves that will better the town. It’s still fairly early on for Arnprior council. But at some point the councillors will begin to realize that small decisions they’ve made in the past dictate many of the options open to them in the future. Tuesday’s council meeting had to do with small decisions surrounding the Community Improvement Plan (CIP). It will set in motion a series of parameters and goals that will guide council. In some cases, handcuff them. Before that happens, we would like to see them deal with what we refer to as ‘the elephant on the waterfront.’ Its other name is Bell Park. Home to the shabby-looking Arnprior Fish and Game Club, and located at the corner of the Madawaska and Ottawa rivers, Bell Park is a jewel with way too much dust on it. We dream of seeing a new town hall with small shops and restaurants attached, surrounded by interlocking brick that leads to a walkway over the river to connect with Robert Simpson beach. But in our dream, the town has unlimited tax dollars. Still, the park should be the focus of any revitalization plans the town undertakes. Reid doesn’t shy away from the fight some would put up. After all, it would include subverting the will of those who bequeathed the property. “It should be looked at,” Reid said, agreeing that Bell Park’s full potential is far from being realized. “I’m always willing to look at everything.” No doubt the CIP is necessary. Governments like studies. When things go wrong it lets them point to documents produced by unelected consultants. But council shouldn’t get bogged down in polices and proper procedures. There’s an elephant to dust off. Time to get at it.

Tree-planting clarifications To the editor: We would like to thank your reporter Derek Dunn for his coverage in your paper (ChronicleGuide, April 21) of our private land tree planting program for Renfrew County landowners. We think a few things might need clarification though. The article indicates we sow seed directly into sites. Direct seeding has been shown to be very difficult to succeed at, so instead we purchase seedlings from local tree nurseries and have them planted by local contractors. We generally purchase threeyear-old stock that is about 20cm tall with a decent-sized root. Letters to the Editor employed at our lumber yard in Renfrew. We have also planted 20,000 red pine seedlings on this property in the last 25 years. I know this is small compared to government projects, but it is very important to our lifestyle and our business of trying to make a living. We, of course, are very concerned with keeping the Ottawa River clean and pollution free, and in our ownership of this property for 58 years have done nothing to create pollution of any kind on the Ottawa River. We are, therefore, opposed to creating an Ottawa River Heritage System and commend Cheryl Gallant for keeping the op-
tions open until all the rules and regulations are spelled out in black and white. There are many rules and regulations in place now without having to contend with more. If the advocates for a River Heritage System claim there will be absolutely no changes, then why are we looking for the Ottawa River Heritage System to be put into place? We feel that our property is in better shape now than when we purchased it in 1953 and don’t require people of any stripe from distances away telling us how to manage our property. To the editor: Re Ottawa River Heritage system. In 1953, my father and I purchased a property on the Ottawa River which in that era was Ross Township. My father was always interested in forest products and I followed along with the same interests, and now, as well is our three sons who are actively involved with our lumber business in Renfrew. During that time period we have done three selective cuts on this property, have injected approximately $250,000 into the local economy with local jobbers, truckers and sawmills besides keeping six to nine men

Young players deprived of competitive hockey opportunity fun, building relationships and developing skills at a level which matches the skill of each child. The parents in the Valley should have the opportunity to decide at which level of hockey their children should play. District 5’s annual general meeting is in Cobden at 7 p.m., June 9, at the Legion. You can support the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces’ desire for a seven-team organization by showing up and voicing displeasure with District 5’s desire to not allow local kids the opportunity to play AA hockey from Atom to Midget. All the other kids in Ontario have the opportunity, why don’t ours?
of teams by adding Major Atom and Minor Peewee. The addition of these last two teams is very important as it allows the Aces to begin player development at the same time as all the other organizations in the league. The Valley is already at a competitive disadvantage as it does not run a tiered novice program or a Minor Atom A program. As well, the Aces had already pledged to the neighboring district that they would expand down to Atom to stop the flood of players looking for cross-boundary transfers into District 4. Why can’t kids in the Valley play AA hockey in Midget so they can have a better chance a advancing on to the junior ranks? Hockey is about having

To the editor: Hockey fans around the valley were glued to TSN watching the Pembroke Lumber Kings finish off the most remarkable season in their history with a win at the RBC Cup. Making the victory even sweeter is the fact the Sheldon Keefe’s team is packed with local talent, including Petawawa’s Matthew Peca and Nathan Siydock, Arnprior’s Kyle Just and Ben Reinhardt, and Pembroke’s Lucas Gonu, Matthew Boudens and Brandon Gagne. Surely, this must be a sign that all is right in the development of top level talent in the Ottawa Valley. Or is it? But the executive of District 5, which controls hockey in the valley, voted to not allow AA hockey for Major Atom players and also put motions on the table to cancel AA hockey for Minor Midget and Major Midget players. The question remains why? Hockey Canada’s mission statement reads: “Lead, develop, and promote positive hockey experiences.” Why does District 5 not believe in allowing for positive hockey experiences and the pursuit of excellence for the best minor hockey players in the Valley? In the past, the Valley’s best minor hockey players started playing AA hockey at Major Atom for the Ottawa Valley Titans. Last year this option was taken away, leaving players below the Major Peewee level with nowhere to play top level competitive hockey. Luckily, a group of dedicated hockey parents stepped up and created the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces AA hockey organization. For the past four years the Aces have continued to slowly expand, starting with a single team and this past year, fielding five teams from Major Peewee to Major Midget. In only four years, the Aces have made quite a mark in Ontario at the AA level, winning numerous tournaments and having teams ranked in the top 10. This year, the Aces were committed to completing their roster

2011 VALVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM The Public Works Department in conjunction with the Spring Hydrant Flush is conducting a Valve Maintenance Program. This program is designed to clean and exercise the valves and by doing so will extend their life as well as determine whether the valves are operable. The work is planned for the weeks of May 30 to June 17, 2011 and will be completed in the shortest period of time possible. This procedure is quite routine but it may result in some temporary inconveniences such as poor water pressure or “red” water. Do not be alarmed.

Arnprior District High School has moved up to second in Renfrew County in the latest Fraser Institute rankings. The top five Renfrew County secondary schools scores for 2009-10 are St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (of Renfrew) 7.8, ADHS 7.6, Jeanne Lajoie of Pembroke 7.2, and Renfrew Collegiate Institute and Mackenize High School of Deep River, each at 7.1. With a score of 6.2, Opeongo High School, near Cobden, is eighth of 11 Renfrew County secondary schools. The scores left St. Joseph’s, which has a number of Arnprior area students, 79th and ADHS 105th among 727 Ontario schools. When comparing results for the last five years, ADHS is 148th among 693 Ontario schools. RCI and Mackenzie are 223rd, St. Joe’s 301st and Jeanne Lajoie 326. Among 65 countries/economies and 10 Canadian provinces that participated in the 2009 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) international testing, Ontario ranked sixth in combined reading, 10th in science, and 14th in mathematics. Visit www.compareschoolrankings.org to see the scores for Ontario’s elementary and secondary schools. Michael Thomas, the Fraser Institute associate director of school performance studies, says report cards are the No. 1 source
for objective, reliable information about how Ontario secondary and elementary schools stack up in terms of academics. Thomas is also co-author of the Report Card on Ontario’s Secondary Schools 2011 and the Report Card on Ontario’s Elementary Schools 2011. “By displaying individual school results for the past five years, the report card offers a ‘motion picture’ indicating whether a school has improved or declined over time,” explained Thomas in a news release. “The idea is that every school is capable of improvement, and that everybody should have easy access to clear, up-to-date information about the performance of schools provincewide.” One “motion picture” the report card reveals is a reduction in the percentage of secondary school exams scoring below the provincial standard over the past five years, dropping to 26.9 per cent in 2009/2010 from 29.3 per cent in 2005/2006. “This is a promising trend for Ontario schools,” said Thomas. “But with more than a quarter of exams still falling below the provincial standard, there is room for academic improvement across the province.” Thomas also says one purpose of the report card is to highlight schools that have improved, and encourage them to share their recipe for success. “When two different schools have student populations with similar personal and family characteristics, but there’s a big gap in exam results, parents and educators should be

Vallier appointed Braeside station chief chief when Walton moved up to chief. The changes were precipitated by the retirement early this year of former fire chief Rob Dodge. Council also agreed that Vallier’s former position of captain be posted and filled internally.

Fire department cheered for its Ribfest success JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
The McNab-Braeside fire department’s victory in the Renfrew Ribfest is one more example of its members’ many initiatives that benefit the community, says the township’s CAO Noreen Mellema in a letter of congratulations. “The real winners in the fire department’s latest endeavour will be the recipients of the life-saving defibrillators purchased with the proceeds that will be installed for public use in public facilities across Renfrew County,” she wrote. The work put in by volunteer firefighter Jeremy Barnett and his team, which beat out the other six teams in the contest “with their delicious, slow cooked, hickory smoked, grilled ribs” is “yet another example of the endless community hours that our firefighters donate to the Township, its residents and its neighbours,” she added. Mellema also noted that the ever popular Sparky delighted all ages at Ribfest while sharing with them invaluable safety lessons. “Congratulations once again to the ladies and gentlemen of our fire department who were able to win bragging rights to the tastiest ribs in the County …. their hard work is always appreciated by the residents of McNab-Braeside. Well done!” The winning team of Barnett, Shannon O’Brien and Karen Barsoski were pleased to win, but they weren’t saying too much about their winning ingredients. However, Barnett would say a marinade was one of the ingredients, and that a key was cooking low and slow. He also said he gleaned a few insights into the art of barbecuing during a trip to Nashville, Tenn., restaurants a while ago. The real winner was the community at large, in the fundraiser geared at placing more defibrillators across Renfrew County, as the general public paid $5 per adult plate of coleslaw, beans and ribs. The inaugural event in 2010 raised $900. This year’s proceeds raised another $785. Local paramedic Rob Dodge says the five-yearold public access defibrillators program has helped purchase and place more than 50 defibrillators across Renfrew County. These are located in a wide variety of buildings, including municipal offices, schools and sports facilities. The program has been made possible through the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and with private and corporate sponsorship. With files from Steve Newman

PAINTINGS FOR MENTAL HEALTH WEEK Works by Paul Stubinsky, who died recently, are featured prominently at the art show in support of Mental Health Week on the May 7-8 weekend. Held at the Arnprior and District Library, the show featured works by Debbie Laventure, left, Jason Ptasinkski, and Susan Watt, among others. About 40 works were part of the Renfrew County Mental Health Services show and sale. Organizers say one in five Canadians will experience mental illness each year. Photo by Derek Dunn
LAY-AWAY NOW for Father’s Day CAPITAL ACCOMPLISHMENT Arnprior’s Rob Hinchley steals a quiet moment away during his busy opening night reception at the prestigious Galerie St. Laurent+Hill on May 12. Hinchley, who finds time to paint when he isn’t teaching others to, is part of a wave of painters who are reviving the tradition of Canadian landscape works. Known for his colour matches, some which seem incongruous at first, Hinchley is also recognized for his interesting approach to texture. Some works incorporate burlap, for instance. Hinchley’s exhibit runs for two weeks. To see more, log onto galeriestlaurentplushill.com. Photo by Derek Dunn

Friends of the Arnprior Library regroups The Arnprior Public Library advocacy group, Friends of the Library, has re-formed after a hiatus of almost two years. The group will act throughout the community to promote the library, its activities, community involvement, reading and literacy. “The library is thrilled with the revitalization of the Friends group,” says chief librarian Karen DeLuca. “It serves as a vital link between the library’s existing services and the ability to reach everyone in the community.” The group plans to participate in regional fairs and festivals, and will co-ordinate a renewal of an Adult Story
Time program. It plans to produce and host a return of the immensely popular CBC-partnered production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in December. It will also work to maintain a reading garden on library grounds. The group was last active in 2009, when it held numerous book sales, spearheaded garden maintenance, and launched the merchant privilege card for new library patrons.
The renewed group, with both former and new members, meets monthly at the Arnprior Public Library at 21 Madawaska St. Anyone interested in becoming a

Trees planted around county Check out this week’s to mark 150th More than 25,000 young trees have been planted around Renfrew County in a celebration of the 150th anniversary and a way to look forward to the years to come. One of the trees was planted in Arnprior’s Robert Simpson Park. Town reeve Walter Stack and Mayor David Reid were among the few on hand to view the planting of a maple tree and placing of a plaque recently. McNab-Braeside has selected a red oak for the Waba Museum property in White Lake. A ceremony has been organized to dedicate the plaque. The public is welcome to attend the gathering at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3 at the Waba Museum property. Several dignitories will be on hand including McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell and Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack. Most of the trees were planted at the county’s Pembroke patrol yard on the corner of Highway 17 and County Road 24. Warden Bob Sweet said the plantings are a green initiative and recognize what forestry means to the area. The new trees will help build a sustainable environment and provide important resources for our future, he said. The county’s goal is to plant 150,000 trees to commemorate the 150th anniversary.

The Arnprior District High School Redman seniors girls rugby team is off to the Peterborough area next week to compete for the provinicial championship. The Eastern Ontario senior rugby girls champions are expected to challenge for a top-three finish at the 16-team OFS-
SA championship hosted by Norwood District High School May 30 to June 1. Playing in the Peterborough area proved lucky for the ADHS football team, which won a provincial championship there in November at Trent University. The ADHS rugby team upended defending Eastern Ontario champion, Rockland, 22-14 May 18 on their Dochart Park pitch to earn the spot in the Ontario championship.

Football, rugby and soccer aren’t the only sports in which Arnprior District High School students excel. The school also had three gold medalists in the Upper Ottawa Valley tennis championships last week. On May 17, a day before ADHS teams won titles in girls rugby and boys and girls soccer, Mike Shoveller won gold in junior boys singles tennis and Andrew Rueckwald and Brenden Stashick were tops in junior boys doubles. The victories qualified the trio for the Eastern Ontario championships in Kingston this week. GOLD FOR PAN Meanwhile, ADHS student Alicia Pan earned a gold medal in the Eastern Ontario Secondary School badminton championship April 28 in Casselman.
Pan qualified for EOSSAA by taking top spot in the Upper Ottawa Valley championship April 19, defeating Jean Cardona of Fellowes in the varsity girls singles final. In the open division, Jen Buffam and and Ashley Perreault finished first in mixed doubles. In the Grade 10-11 county badminton championship, ADHS students Jamie Brown and Jenny Reuter were tops in girls doubles (competitive) and Natalie Portt was number one in recreational girls singles play. In the nine-team Grade 9 badminton tournament, ADHS finished second to Opeongo in the team rankings. Arnprior was led by Dakota Cavanaugh and Casey Beudon who were first in mixed doubles. Runners-up were Emily Fortier and Katherine Groulx in girls doubles and Bonnie McGonigal in girls singles.
“We have a very reasonable expectation of winning a medal,” said coach Glenn Wallace. Winning the Eastern Ontario championship on their home turf was exciting for the girls. The main core of the team of 31 players has been together for a couple of years, but this year’s squad is the definitely the strongest, noted Wallace. ADHS did face a stiff test with Rockland, but after trailing at half
time, the girls turned things around with a strong second half. “They got back to what makes them a great team,” explained Wallace. He said being able to go to tournaments at Trent and Queen’s and face top competition has helped the Redmen boost the level of their play. Fortunately, community support helped make it possible for the team attend those tournaments, he noted.

ADHS boys, girls soccer teams win county championships Success keeps coming for Arnprior District High School athletes. Both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams snagged county championships last Wednesday in Pembroke on the same day the school’s senior girls rugby team captured the Eastern Ontario championship. The varsity girls soccer team started a very successful playoff tournament at Riverside Park May 18, squeaking out a 1-0 quarter-final win against Jeanne Lajoie. After regulation play and two 10-minute overtime periods, the championship game ended 0-0 and needed to be decided by a five-player shootout. Arnprior won the shootout 3-2 on goals by Poirier, Allison Hudson and Sam Caesar. Jen Buffam was the star of this game with excellent work in the net. The Arnprior Figure Skating Club is expanding its programs this year to include something for all skating enthusiasts. For the very young skaters, the PreCanskate program is the perfect introduction to skating. The program runs once a week beginning in October. The focus is fun while learning to skate independently through songs and games in smaller groups. If your little one is able to get up off the ice and move, Canskate is a great program for them, and is offered twice a week. The program works on basic forward and backward skating skills. New this year is a program for those who can’t wait to begin Canskate and would like to start early. The club is offering a “warm-up” program for Canskate twice a week in September. Canadian Jumpstart Day Saturday Canadian Tire will celebrate its third annual Jump-start Day this Saturday, May 28. Jumpstart is involved in every community in which there is a Canadian Tire store. It is a national charitable program that helps financially disadvantaged children ‘get in the game’ by covering registration, equipment and/or transportation costs. If the more common activities like hockey, soccer or baseball don’t tickle their
fancy, your child can be introduced to an activity a bit different. Martial arts, dance, swimming and gymnastics are just a few options, noted a Canadian Tire press release. “Let’s keep kids healthy inside and out and give kids a sporting chance.” One in three kids misses out in sports, the press release adds. People can support Canadian Tire Jumpstart Day. For every dollar donated May 28,
dren, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, Canadian Parks and Recreation Association and the YMCA. The Jumpstart program has supported children in more than 60 sports and recreation activities. You can support the Jumpstart program at the Arnprior Canadian Tire at 245 Daniel St. S. For more information, go to: www.canadiantire.ca/jumpstart.
Canadian Tire will contribute $2 to make the overall donation $3. CHERYL BABINEAU
thought it appropriate to feature this astounding designer’s work. That’s when I realized why not mark my own past decade in business with a birthday party of sorts at the same time Saturday, May 28. Chagnon’s latest collection is QOR, influenced by her most recent stay in South America. The material at the heart of her collection remains sculpted pewter, but this year certain pieces are 22-k goldplated marking the passage of this year
The concept for Primal Alchemy rises out of a long-established relationship with a Montreal designer whose work continues to astound me. Anne Marie Chagnonis one of the most prolific artist/ designers of contemporary and sophisticated jewellery that I have come across in over a decade. As Chagnon celebrates 15 years of design, I
of celebration. The Bitterweet Gallery in Burnstown will be bursting with new works of local artists like painters Jerome Coulas and Kathy Haycock and the textiles of Renfrew’s Valerie Miller. Collectors of blown glass may still find works by the late Clark Guettel along with Burnstown budding glass artist Bettina Baum and the evocative works of NAC set painter Karen Phillips Curran.
Bittersweet is delighted to introduce an artist from the Burnstown-Goshen area. Johannes Veenstra. His pastel stilllifes are skillfully rendered in the tradition of Dutch masters of the 17th century. Richard Gill will reveal some of his latest conceptual sketches, the early workings for his fall show that will pay tribute to Renfrew County’s 150th anniversary. at the door. Every youth needs a signed permission form for admittance. By purchasing your tickets in advance, admittance will be a lot quicker and you save yourself the line-up at the door. Get them today. If you can help out at the dance, it would be greatly appreciated! We expect a large crowd, so the more the volunteers, the better. Call Kayla at the Nick Smith Centre if you are interested. All volunteers need a clear police records check, as well as a meeting with Kayla before the dance. As a reminder, there is still free drop-in dodgeball Mondays from 6-7 p.m. here at the Nick Smith Centre. It is for ages 9-16. Bring your running shoes for some fun. Come on out for some active fun. We are planning our fall and winter programs. Have an idea? Contact us! For more information, contact Kayla or Don at the Nick Smith Centre at 613-623-7301 or by email kreinert@arnprior.ca. Keep in mind all registrations must be done in person at the Nick Smith Centre and are due a week prior to your program begins. Remember you can add us to Facebook by searching for “Nick Smith Centre” and join our group, “Arnprior Parks and Recreation Youth Programs.”

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR KAY Kay’s Spring Fling supper/dance fundraiser at the Arnprior Legion May 14 was a huge success, say organizers. As a result of community support, the Lyman family will be able to give two scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each in the memory Kay Lyman, who died last May in a car crash. Her mother, Samantha, said she will likely be able to give the whole graduating class of 208 students a night at the movies. “I am very pleased and happy with all the support that was given to our fundraiser,” she said. “The community as a whole was very generous.” Shown with the memorial display set up at the fundraiser are Samantha and her husband and Kay’s brothers Ross and Cody Smith.

When Sister Barb Hebert returns to Peru she’ll be bringing a gift from the Ottawa Valley. Originally of Renfrew, Sister Barb of the Sisters of Holy Cross has been in the impoverished country for seven years “In Peru, 30 million people – a third of the population – live in poverty,” says Hebert. “In any given week people come to our door asking for food or sometimes for clothes.” The Sisters’ focus is mainly on women and children and Hebert’s current project is a sewing program to help women become self-sufficient. “You know the saying ‘teach a man a fish’ so we’re saying give a woman a skill so can have dignity and the ability to feed and care for her children,” says Hebert. The program is running well and con-

tracts are being set up for the women to sew school and work uniforms. When Hebert put the word out that some seed money was required for the program, the donations started rolling in. Here on a recent visit, she met with Knights of Columbus and Catholic Womens League representatives to accept cheques. Suzanne Mullins presented $500 on behalf of the Catholic Women’s League and Blaine Mullins had a $500 donation from the 4th degree Renfrew/Arnprior Knights of Columbus. Then, Renfrew’s third degree Knights gave $500. “Their generosity is overwhelming,” says Hebert. About $3,000 is needed so they’re well on their way, says Hebert. Hebert has been in Peru for seven years, while the Sisters of the Holy Cross have had a presence in the country for 20 years.

Please find me a home Each week we feature animals from the Arnprior and District Humane Society that are up for adoption.
Buddy #3991 Buddy is a neutered 3 year old, Jack Russell Terrier mix. He came from a home that didn’t treat him very well, which left him with some issues that will need some work. He is a lively, sweet boy that loves to play. Buddy is typical of his breed; he has lots of energy and requires an active home. Buddy is best suited in an adult only home, he is not good with children. An owner with breed experience would be ideal. Buddy is good with cats and other dogs but would prefer to be the only pet. He is a fantastic little guy with lots of potential.
Barnaby #3878 Are you that special someone who could give Barnaby a chance? The six-year-old neutered Beagle mix has been at the shelter since December of 2009 and really needs to find a forever home of his own. He is a strong, energetic boy, who loves to go for walks. He is affectionate and loves belly rubs once he knows you, but can be wary of strangers. He is terrifed of loud noises and is a quiet dog that is completely housebroken. Barnaby would love a home with a fenced yard so he can enjoy off-leash exercise. He loves to play and especially enjoys squeaky toys. Barnaby is great with other dogs and cats and would be good with older children. He is a sweet boy that will make a wonderful companion if someone would give him a chance.
Pledge sheets for the June 12 Walk in the Park are now available on the shelter’s website www.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca or can be picked up at the shelter (490 Didak Dr., Arnprior) or the Arnprior or Renfrew Pet Valu stores Supplies the shelter needs : Fabric softener sheets, kitten food (dry & soft), whiskas meaty selections cat food, paper towels and laundry soap

A garden of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears
Remembered and loved always, Eleanor, Bonnie, Brenda and Families ROBERTSON, Ross Remember him with a smile today, He was not one for tears, Reflect instead on memories, Of all the happy years. Recall to mind the way he spoke, And all the things he said. His strength, his stance, the way he walked, Remember these instead. The good advice he’d given us, His eyes that shone with laughter, So much of him will never die, But live on forever after. As we loved you, so we miss you, In memory you are near, Loved, remembered, longed for always, Bringing many a silent tear, Put your arms around him Lord, Treat him with special care, Make up for all he suffered, And all that seemed unfair.
DEMERS, Marcel
Your smile has gone forever, And your hand we cannot touch, We have so many memories, Of you Mom, we loved so much. If we could have one lifetime wish, One dream that could come true, We’d ask with all our hearts, For yesterday and you. Always in our thoughts, Love your husband John and Todd, Cheryl, Scott and Trina IN MEMORIAM
