Real deal Last-minute agreement averts strike at Arnprior Aerospace JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

The picket shifts were being organized and the picket signs readied. However, a last-minute deal has averted what seemed late week an inevitable strike at Arnprior Aerospace. Both the company and the members of the International Association of Machinists (IAM), Local 1542, ratified a new two-year agreement Tuesday. Word of a deal caused a feeling of relief in the community, as a strike would have put about 400 people out of work for what many had predicted would be a long time. A lengthy labour dispute involving so many workers from up and down the Valley could have had a major effect on the local economy. “I think we’re all relieved that a new collective agreement is in place,” said Arnprior Aerospace human resources director Brent Pierce. It has been at least three years since Arnprior council chambers were jampacked with as many people as on Tuesday evening. Most of the about 30 residents made up a delegation demanding Van Dusen Drive, off White Lake Road, be repaved.

Robert Verch led the group and penned a letter to council, most of who were visibly impressed with the show of civic activism. He explained that when that section of town near the airport and Madawaska River was annexed from McNab-Braeside in 1988, it needed repairs, being eight years old. See ‘COUNCIL’ Page 3
