Relay for Life inspiring for students Luminary, survivor ceremonies stirring JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

MAJESTIC MCNAB McNab Days 2011 are just around the corner. With activities in Braeside, White Lake and Burnstown, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. 18. 19

About 300 Arnprior District High School students took part in an inspiring Relay for Life overnight Friday. The students and staff raised about $24,000 for the fight against cancer in the 12-hour relay around the school’s track. For many, the two highlights were the survivors lap that launched the relay and the luminary ceremony close to midnight. That ceremony was preceded by heartfelt speeches by about 10 students explaining who they were thinking of as they circled the track. Then, as the luminaries flared, the students made a lap in silence, and then another one for good measure. Each relay participant had a luminary, which were distributed around the track after dark, where they burned brightly for most of the night. The luminaries included messages written by the students. As students rounded the track in the silent laps, many stopped to read the luminary messages, which prompted tears for many. SUMMER MURAL

The impressive mural is close to 35 feet long and 13 feet high and has taken about five days to complete.

Shaun McInnes finishes off a striking mural on the wall of Lorne’s Electric on Madawaska Boulevard in Arnprior. The mural is entitled Summer Days in Arnprior and is a tribute to the White Pine Festival coming up in August. The mural was commissioned by Eric and Trish Glahs. McInnes is well known for his murals in Ottawa and Carleton Place. The native of Cape Breton said he enjoyed working in Arnprior as the people have been so friendly. His work can be viewed at addgraphicsplus.com. Photos by John Carter

Arnprior garden in spotlight The Ottawa Botanical Garden Society (OBGS) is organizing a country garden tour that includes stops in Arnprior and several other nearby communities. The self-guided country garden tour June 25-26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day features 12 country gardens in the Kanata, Dunrobin, Kinburn, Arnprior, Burnstown, Pakenham and Almonte areas. The gardens are owned by Gillian and Roger Danby of Arnprior, McNabBraeside’s Sandy and Steve Hanson, Jo-Ann and Blair Geddes, Pat and Alan Gale, Lis and Robert Allison, Fern and Peter Martin, Judy and John McGrath, Paddye Mann, Carol and Brian Bean, Pat and Frank Vetter, Elsa Geuer, and Gudrun Boyce and Carol Neumann. The destinations include the natural woodland retreat of a well-known local potter with some 700 different species of plants and ferns native to Eastern and Northern Ontario and an invit-

ing garden built to express a couple’s life-long love of nature and showcase the late Juan Geuer’s metal and wood sculptures. One participating gardener has been developing her hosta garden for 17 years with more than 500 varieties of this versatile plant. The fundraising event will also include a twist, an option of participating in a car rally called ‘Over the Hedge’. The rally will enable people to explore the country roads as they are visiting the gardens. The proceeds of the fundraiser will go towards the creation of a national botanic garden at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. The entry fee is $35 and includes visits to the gardens and the optional car rally. The passport booklets are available at the Arnprior Book Shop. For more information and passport booklets, check the website at www.ottawagarden.ca.

McNab-Braeside council is trying to come to grips with the thorny question of naming public facilities. While the township hasn’t encountered a controversy like the one in Ottawa swirling around the unsuccessful effort to name the archives building for Charlotte Whitton, it can be a touchy subject, noted Mayor Mary Campbell. The issue arose when council was asked to honour a local longtime volunteer by naming one of the township facilities for him. Council agreed there needs to be a policy in place before any decision is made. Township CAO Noreen Mellema provided council with naming policies from three other municipalities, including Ottawa, at the June 7 council meeting. Campbell noted Ottawa’s policy mandates a person has to be dead before anything is named after them. She said another municipality’s policy to name things after

Arnprior storytellers at Expo, public invited to attend festivities Continued from front Museum curator Janet Carlile told the Chronicle-Guide earlier this week that she’s excited about the schedule of local storytellers who will make appearances at the event. In most cases speakers will appear in the morning and afternoon. Thursday’s storyteller is John Robertson, Doug Scheels follows Friday and Gordon Bethune and Morris Hall are Saturday’s speakers. Sunday’s scheduled storyteller is Reg Wagenblass. Carlile expressed her thanks to Mark Nibourg at the Kenwood Corporate Centre for providing space for volunteers to work on

the store. Arnprior’s general store is part of the Renfrew County Museum Network exhibit, which includes features from various communities. Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens will have a log cabin, Renfrew will have a parlor and the Bonnechere Museum will have a stopping place. Carlile encouraged residents in Arnprior and area to head up to the event and be part of it. The celebrations begin at 11 a.m. each day Thursday through Sunday (June 9 to 12) and run into the evening. The full schedule was included in a supplement published in last week’s Chronicle-Guide.

Donations accepted at Seniors office Continued from front Seniors at Home officials are urging those who have not contributed to do so during the encore presentation or any week day at the Arnprior office in an effort to add to the $23,000 already

donated and reduce the deficit. If that doesn’t work, the Care Coach service will have to be reduced. For more on the service’s dilemma, see the letter from Dennis Harrington on Page 9

geographical landmarks appealed to her. She pointed out people tend to call facilities by geographical names, citing the Braeside R.A. Centre as an example. It is rarely called the John Gillies Hall. While community activists should be honoured, there are other ways other than naming buildings for them, Campbell said. Perhaps having a plaque in memory or in appreciation of a person in a building is sufficient, she added. Deputy Mayor Christine Blimkie said a consistent policy needs to be implemented in all areas of the township. Coun. Brad McIlquham said if the township is going to allow naming things for people, it should be for lifetime achievement. Council agreed its volunteer recognition committee (Campbell and McIlquham) will discuss the issue and all other advisory committees will be asked for input. The matter will come back to council July 5.

JOHN CARTER

McNab-Braeside council has decided to hold off on taking action on dealing with an increase in wild cats in Braeside. Noting there is nothing in this year’s budget to deal with the problem, council decided Tuesday to collect more information about possible options and then allocate money in next year’s budget. Council discussed three main courses of action. One would be to determine that it is up to individual property-owners to deter the cats and do nothing. A second option involves trapping feral cats, keeping them a week or so to allow people to claim them and then euthanize them. A third option would be to trap, neuter and re-

lease the cats, hoping that action would eventually lead to a reduction in the population. “There are going to be people unhappy no matter what we do,” said Mayor Mary Campbell. Council noted that the last two options could be potentially expensive and time-consuming for the township. Deputy Mayor Christine Blimkie suggested that if the township spend money on the problem in Braeside, other areas of the township might ask for the same consideration. “So far, they (Braeside) are the only complaints we’ve received,” said Campbell. The Arnprior Humane Society has indicated it is overrun with cats and is not in a position to accept anymore.

The atmosphere was “truly incredible,” said teacher Laura Carter, who assisted the student council organize the event. “The students who participated understood their purpose for being there,” she said. “Every person on the track had a person in mind during the relay.” Carter said that it was both emotional and inspiring to hear students talk about their personal connections to the Relay for Life and people fighting cancer. “Overall, the evening was a great success,” she said. “We’ve had lots of positive feedback from staff and students and they’re anxious to relay again.” The relay began with about 20 cancer survivors, led by Tony and Cathie Beck, circling the track in their yellow t-shirts as students lined the route and clapped. “Tonight at ADHS we’re fighting back (against cancer),” said Curtis McGrath, as he proclaimed the beginning of the relay. Carter noted the relay, the school’s third, was an initiative of the ADHS student council. Student leadership made it possible, she said, noting this year’s focus was on local action. Fatal prompts traffic warning JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

The paving of a short stretch of Highway 17 just west of Arnprior has ended, but there will be plenty of other road construction projects in the area this summer. With the two serious collisions in the vicinity of last week’s paving in mind, police are urging drivers to be extra careful in when approaching construction zones. The two collisions June 1 near Campbell Drive in McNab-Braeside involved drivers coming up on traffic slowed or stopped for the paving. One man was killed and several others were sent to hospital. Renfrew OPP report that Karlinton Boothe, 32, of Gatineau was eastbound in a 2007 Volvo transport owned by Convoy Supply at the time of the second crash. He died at the scene. The OPP investigation revealed eastbound traffic was stopped for construction just after 3 p.m., June 1 when Boothe’s transport failed to stop and rear-ended a tanker truck. The tanker was forced ahead, causing a chain reaction collision

The Opposition parties have criticized the budget for giving “unnecessary tax breaks for big corporations and not going far enough to assist low income seniors, reward businesses that create jobs, fix health care and strengthen pensions. However, the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants says the budget “keeps Canada heading in the right direction.

Meanwhile, the MP noted there is a new atmosphere in Parliament. “What is absolutely amazing is the way there has been a complete role reversal in the House of Commons during today’s budget speech, she said. “The new (NDP) Official Opposition is embracing their role. We are here to stimulate jobs and growth, to work together to get the job done, she added.

Re-introduced federal budget balanced, reasonable: MP Gallant

Stick to geographic names for buildings Naming municipally-owned buildings and other taxpayer-funded properties can be dicey for elected representatives. McNab-Braeside council may find out just how dicey following its July 5 meeting when it is expected to decide on naming a township facility after a long-time volunteer in the area. However, we agree they are on the right track. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, not known for getting his hands dirty, was embroiled in a controversy when he suggested naming the new Central Archives Ottawa Public Library Materials Centre after former mayor - and accused anti-semite - Charlotte Whitton. The outrage it sparked forced Watson to drop the idea in favour of a list of seven criteria and a plea to the public. The problem is that one criterion suggestions a current City of Ottawa employee win the honour; another suggests a past employee get it. Not much left to pick from if you are a regular Joe volunteer or war hero. Also, across Canada private sector workers are harbouring greater and greater contempt for their well-compensated bureaucratic and political counterparts. Maybe looking for worthy people outside of government would engender a bit of humility. Surely someone out there is worthy. Another naming scheme we would suggest staying away from is Arnprior’s when it comes to new streets. The council of the day won positive attention from regional media outlets for the move, but we recommend ensuring flexibility. There could be a person come along who is more worthy than a soldier, but will never have a street named after them. Which brings us to Mayor Mary Campbell’s safe, if slightly banal, suggestion of naming public facilities after geographic landmarks. We like it. Again, a little on the dull side; calling a building in Braeside the Braeside R.A. Centre might not seem flashy (even though it is in direct opposition to the actual name), but it’s the name most people like. If there needs to be a policy for such things, we agree with Campbell in saying facilities should be named after places. People, even non-soldiers, worthy of recognition should have streets named after them. Unless a corporate sponsor such as Scotiabank or Pepsi comes along and wants to pay a chunk of money to cover, say, the township offices with their logos. Then we say... maybe not.

Quit giving us your trash To the editor: To Whom It May Concern, I felt compelled to write this letter finally, after seeing once again, garbage dumped in the area where I live in White Lake. Usually it is the following: piles of cigarette butts, beer cans and bottles, plastic water and drink bottles, cigarette packs, Tim Horton coffee cups, and the latest - a stash of several pornographic magazines dumped in a water-filled ditch for all to see … including innocent children. I recognize that to dump those types of magazines may have been very smart and brave for someone to do; I don’t feel it was a good idea to dump them in this location, or along any other public roadside either. And all of these trash items and many more on only a threekm stretch of country road!

This has not just started to happen; I’ve been looking at this type of behaviour for years. If you don’t have regular garbage and recycling pick-ups, please consider inquiring about them or ask someone to help you if you need help taking the trash to the road for pick-up. I live, walk with my friends, walk my dog and cycle along these beautiful back country roads and so do many other people, young and old. We do this because of the beauty, fresh air and what’s left of the natural untouched environment. Please re-consider next time you or someone you are with or know decides to litter illegally and/or on someone else’s property. Donna Langford White Lake

Carden Cup, nor do I care to. My thinking, Mike, is that you wouldn’t know a puck from a pair of binoculars. Good luck in the bush.

To the editor: Today I watched the reintroduction of the federal budget at 4 p.m. Amongst the measures reintroduced was the federal tax program re ‘retro fit of energy saving’ systems, etc. We knew this program existed in the past fiscal year, but we didn’t know where one subscribed for the ‘audit’ process to determine eligibility. After speaking to a tradesperson in town, we were advised to simply contact out energy providers. They would definitely know! So we telephoned this company in Toronto. Their customer service representative had no idea what we were talking about. They only addressed service and appliances. Okay! This was a gas company. So we phoned a provincial electricity provider, also in Toronto, and eventually after a number of times of pushing the numeral one we got the right department. This was at 4:45 p.m. A recorder said their hours of operation was 8 a.m to 5 p.m daily. Somehow, they missed 15 minutes of work time. I had just wasted three quarters of an hour trying to talk to somebody. I left our telephone number. Then I thought ... Oh well they probably left early. Toronto was playing Kansas City. Then I remembered this was an `away game.` This is an appeal to both Mr. McGuinty who resides in Toronto for now anyway, and Mrs. Flaherty. Who is running the store here. We really want to be a part of this energy-saving program and have already invested our hard earned money in getting started. But nobody in the business seems to care very much! It seems this program is a well-kept secret at the provincial level, but not necessarily so at the federal one. But it is a secret of sorts! I finally found out where to get the information one needs to pursue this program. One needs to log onto the Government of Canada website, and then to the Eco-Energy Refit Program. The names of the agencies approved to do the necessary audits are listed there as well as all of the relevant information re what is approved for rebates, etc. How did I finally get there? After repeated calls to everyone who ought to know about this initiative and doesn’t, it was our town staff ‘on the phones, who got me going in the right direction. Kudos to them and a big thank you, otherwise I might still be spinning my wheels. The person who assisted me went out of her way, and I appreciate that very much.

To the editor: We could not have done it without you. My most sincere appreciation to all of the dedicated volunteers who assisted in any way toward the successful production of our fifth annual Dare to Care Telethon. It was a pleasure to work with each one of you. My thanks to Cogeco Community TV Channel 22, MYFM 107.7, all the hosts and entertainers, sound and lighting; you all were an important part of the production success. To date we have received $23,146.33 in donations. Our thanks to all who have contributed: businesses, individuals and service clubs. Out of the revenue received comes the telethon production costs associated with putting the telethon on, such as parish hall rentals, phones, sound and lighting along with other miscellaneous expenses totaling just under $8,000. To operate the Para Transit Vehicle without service interruption, our agency requires a minimum of $35,000. After all is said and done, the Care

Coach Para Transit Service will see a $12,000 shortfall. This year’s telethon unfortunately did not realize the financial outcome we needed in order to sustain our Care Coach Para Transit Service for the full year. Unfortunately, without any level of government assistance, the responsibility of maintaining this vital service to our community falls upon the community itself. The Care Coach has proven beyond a doubt that it is a vital service needed in our community. In its inaugural year 2008, the Coach was providing 23 trips per month. In February of 2011, it has surpassed 200 trips per month both locally and long distance. A transportation service provided with dignity to over 200 individuals for medical, social, personal and educational needs. In 2006 Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors At Home Program Inc. stepped forward when a need for accessible transportation in our community was identified. With the help of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and our first telethon, we were able to pur-

chase and convert a vehicle to provide accessible transportation to our individuals of all ages. On Sunday, June 19 from 1 to 8 p.m., our Dare to Care Telethon will be re-broadcasted over Cogeco Community TV Channel 22. In order to maintain a Monday-toFriday daily Para-Transit service for our community, I ask that if you have not contributed to this year’s telethon that you would consider a financial contribution to ensure this service is offered on a regular basis to the community. The pledge line on Sunday, June 19 is 613-622-CARE (2273). Donations towards to Care Coach may be dropped off at our agency office located in the Towne Centre at 106 McGonigal St. West, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Within the next month, our board of directors and staff will be reviewing the financial resources we have and the operational hours of our Care Coach Para Transit Service.

WHITE LAKE GARAGE SALE PARTY It was the traditional first Saturday in June garage sale day in White Lake June 4 and McNab-Braeside firefighters from the White Lake station were front and centre. The firefighters cooked up breakfast and lunch for the many hungry bargain seekers that flooded into the village for the garage sale tables that were set up from one end of White Lake to the other. Among the cooks, from left, are Karen Barsoski, Jay Robertson, Steve Cunningham, Chris Tremblay, Duane Leitch and Kevin Nicholson. At the head of the line for food are brothers Wade and Ricky Davidson, who were up at the cottage for the weekend from Ottawa. The firefighters also held a yard sale of their own, thanks to generous donations from the community. As well, they distributed fire safety information. Garage sale Saturday in White Lake was so successful this year, that the firefighters ran out of food. Photo by John Carter

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Anton Reitsma was in his late teens when the hotel burned to the ground behind St. Michael’s school in Fitzroy Harbour. He, along with many people in the village, watched from the roadside as volunteer firefighters dashed back and forth in a kind of controlled chaos. It was sad to watch the three-storey structure succumb to flames, he said. But it was also impressive to see how hard the firefighters worked to save it, and the teamwork they displayed. He decided there and then to join the fire department. Now, 50 years later, this Saturday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a party will be thrown in his honour at Fire Station 62. “It’s been good, I’ve enjoyed it,” Reitsma said Tuesday, sitting in a swivel chair in the empty station’s front office. “It was sad to see the old building burned. They tried hard, but sometimes nothing can be done.” The scanner behind him crackles and hisses out a few words while Reitsma, a fit and affable 70-year-old, stops talking and perks up to listen. A few more hisses and the swivel chair is still again. A false alarm. Within an hour, at the scene of a junk fire, Captain Stu Penny would chime in that Reitsma never misses a call. “He goes to every call. He’s always at the end of my driveway waiting,” Penny said. “A great guy and a great neighbour. You couldn’t get a better neighbour.”

Anton says wives such as Faye are to be applauded for the work volunteer firefighters do. Faye works at Scotiabank in Arnprior. Photo by Derek Dunn

Reitsma has been on scene at many of the most dramatic and tragic fires and car accidents in the region. In Arnprior alone, he responded to mutual calls at the high school fire (a man from his crew fell through the ceiling and survived); the Beamish department store blaze in the 1970s, now a parking lot near John and Elgin streets; and an arson at the building in place before Mac’s Milk on Madawaska Street was built. The most dangerous from a personal vantage was a house fire on Steen Side Road that nearly engulfed him. “I couldn’t breathe, so I had to go through the window,” he said with hands around his neck as if in strangulation. “That one scared me.” In others the results were devastating. He’s dealt with a suspected murder-sui-

describes going on calls thinking one of his children might be involved. That has happened to local firefighters. And when it does, they are forced to work through the emotions or pull back from the scene, he said. “Then you are driving back and your hands sweat,” he said. “You don’t go to bed that night and wonder if you did everything right or if you could have done things differently. It’s hard.” Nevertheless, counselling has long been available to firefighters and there is a type of fraternal bond that forms among the crews. They often talk among themselves afterward to work it out. It helps to be easy-going because tempers will flare, he said, and the balance between evenhanded veterans and gung-ho younger guys is a good one to maintain. Reitsma, who has been awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, along with service medals from the federal and provincial governments, comes from a firefighting background. Together with his father Durk and brothers Egbert, Gerrit, Eddie, Dick and John, the Reitsmas were at one time the largest family of volunteer firefighters in Ontario.

cide, searching for a body among ashes, homes ravaged by fire during Christmastime and more. A few stick out in his mind. Although unwilling to go into great detail on others, for fear of sensationalizing events, he nevertheless is willing to explain through an anecdote that the job isn’t always pleasant. One example was a singleoccupant accident near Highway 17 and Galetta Side Road. A car smashed into a trailer. “He was not in good shape. He died in front of us.” Then, eyes turning red, he talked about the phone call he got from the man’s widow in Pembroke later that night. She wanted to know if he said anything before dying. “What could I do? I couldn’t lie,” he said, seeming to still wrestle with the decision. “I told her the truth. He didn’t say anything.” The woman said she should have gone first. She had cancer. “It’s not a glorious job,” he said. “Usually because you are out in the community and you know a lot of people. Somebody knows somebody.” Reitsma remains remarkably jovial despite all that he has experienced. He

Through the fire

Community

Firefighter by night, Carpenter by day Continued from Page 11 His father once quipped that when he retired as chief in Fitzroy Harbour, Reitsma said, laughing, it would take two sons to replace him. He now credits work done by fire prevention officers. “I used to go into schools and talk to the kids,” he said. “They absorb everything you tell them, the ‘stop, drop and roll,’ and they bring it home.” RIDEAU HALL CARPENTER Reitsma is father to Chad and Tyler, and married to Faye, who works at Scotiabank in Arnprior. His day job for many years was as a cabinet maker. After a lengthy stint in carpentry, Reitsma decided at the age of 50 that he wanted to work indoors.

He couldn’t have picked a better indoor place than Rideau Hall. As it turns out the National Capital Commission was searching for an older handyman to work at the Governor-General’s residence, along with others such as the prime minister’s home, 24 Sussex Dr., and the leader of the opposition’s, Stornoway in Rockcliffe Park. Reitsma has many stories to share about meeting governorsgeneral Ray Hnatyshyn, Romeo LeBlanc and Adrienne Clarkson, along with prime ministers’ wives Mila Mulroney and Aline Chretien. Reitsma got on well with the rich and powerful, treating them no differently than anyone else. They reciprocated, asking him in person when they needed a job done. “I found if you treated them

like real people they did the same,” he said. “And once they get to know you personally and what you can do, they use you a lot.” Reitsma insists that being a volunteer firefighter isn’t a job done by one man in isolation. He said wives like Faye are there in the middle of the night to help on the home front. “She’s first out the door to open the garage door when I’m getting up,” he said. Faye said it can be difficult to have a husband as a firefighter. She, too, is glued to the scanner listening for the latest calls. If the roads are icy, she knows it could be a bad night for emergency crews. But, like her husband, Faye is at once stoic and cheerful. “It’s not too bad. I sit with my tea,” she said.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The Arnprior Rotary Club celebrated its 25th anniversary at a dinner with guests from across the region on May 30. However, first among the dignitaries on hand was Leo Hughes, who was honoured with the fellowship award named after Rotary International’s founder. Hughes is a founding member of the local chapter. “As a Paul Harris Fellowship, Leo is part of a remarkable company of persons throughout the world, all recognized for their devotion to the ideals of goodwill, peace and understanding,” said Gerhard Peters in his introduction. “This is a goal of Rotarians the world over, and one that Leo clearly shares.” Hughes is a semi-retired Presbyterian minister and the sole remaining charter member of the Arnprior club, which consists of 24 members. He has held many positions in the club, including president on at least two occasions, and is currently the co-chair of the Arnprior Blood Donor Clinic.

He participates in many community activities and is chaplain of the Arnprior Legion. Hughes described to the dinner crowd gathered at Jim’s Restaurant how the chapter came together in May 1986 from members of both Renfrew and Ottawa South. At the time, 27 members were on board. They were responsible for Arnprior District High School’s Peer Support program, donating about $10,000 annually to Easter Seals, the Millennium Trails project, the Arnprior sign on Highway 417 at the Highway 29 overpass, kiosks and much more. “We spend a lot of our time selling tickets,” he said, jokingly. “We never win a thing.” He said by 1999 membership in the club dwindled to four, but was brought back due to the efforts of Peters and his wife Jane. “The group wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the Peters,” Hughes said. Rotary’s major achievement is helping to eradicate polio. The disease was rampant in 172 countries until Rotary started raising money for vaccines. It is down to four countries.

NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING gets read. gets remembered. gets results Jane and Gerhard Peters are credited with saving the Arnprior Rotary Club a little over a decade ago when membership fell to just four. With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

Gas tank, fishing gear stolen Two boat-owners in McNabBraeside have been targeted by thieves, report the Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police. Two tackle boxes were stolen from a boat docked at a residence on Green Meadow Road. The boxes were stolen during the week of May 21 to 28. They were both full of lures, jigs and rubber worms. There are no suspects. Two gas tanks were also stolen from a docked boat, this one at a residence on Lindsay Lane. The theft was reported June 3, and occurred in the previous two days. OPP Constable Andre Kolkowski is investigating. Renfrew OPP officers responded to six domestic disputes last week. One female was charged with assault and mischief under $5,000. In a separate incident, a female was charged with assault and mischief under $5,000. No other charges were laid.

PC riding boss honoured Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Progressive Conservative Provincial Riding Association president Mike Yolkowski was honoured at the recent PC Ontario Convention. During the opening ceremony May 27, he was one of three people to receive a Trillium Award for Outstanding Riding President. Yolkowski has for many years given above and beyond his time and talent for the Ontario PC Party. He was first elected as president for the local riding association in 2008 and through his leadership, strong work ethic and diplomatic manner, he continues to lead. On hand to congratulate him on receiving this award was Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak and local MPP John Yakabuski. “Mike you are truly deserving of this prestigious honour,” said Yakabuski. “Thank you for everything you do. Your hard work and support is sincerely appreciated.”

Next up is the The Braeside Riverdriver Festival on Saturday. The event will be held over to June 26 in case of inclement weather. Designed to celebrate the rich lumber history of the area, the event is a great example of co-operation from communities on both sides of the river, with activities on offer in Braeside and Norway Bay. “McNab-Braeside has a bit of a competition on who can put on the best party,” said the township’s Mayor Mary Campbell on the June 1 media tour. “McNab Days are going to end up being an Outaouais/Ottawa Valley event.” The festival begins with a breakfast and launch at 9:30 a.m. at Norway Bay. The Norway Bay to Red Pine Bay Flotilla – featuring vintage boats and canoes, the Prior Chest Nuts dragonboat team and the Burnstown Rowers – is scheduled to arrive at Red Pine Bay on Usborne Street in Braeside at 11 .m. Cost to attend is $3 per person or $10 per family. Among the watercraft featured in the flotilla is the only remaining alligator boat, a 50-foot steam-powered amphibious warping tug that was used at the turn of the century to access lumber more inland. “It’s the last operating alligator boat in the world,” says Campbell. The Red Pine Bay event includes entertainment, refreshments and more. Bill Connelly and the Pine Bark Boys will take to the stage first and Disturbing the Peace is set to perform at 12:30 p.m. The Burnstown Women’s Institute is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year

McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell is optimistic McNab Days will end up in the black. Township council reviewed the McNab Days budget at its June 7 meeting. Although the budget is changing as new sponsorships come in, the preliminary figures indicate costs to the municipality of $7,610 and revenue of about $10,000. The key to success is community attendance, said Campbell.

Ryan Baskin derby June 18 Ryan Baskin was an avid fisherman and when the teenager was killed in a May 2005 car ac-

cident his family decided a fish derby would be a great way to keep his memory alive. The

sixth annual event is Saturday, June 18 and proceeds go to an endowment fund that provides new equipment and patient care items to the Ottawa Hospital

Civic campus ICU unit, where Baskin was cared for before his death. Participants can fish anywhere. Registration is Friday

June 17 (4-8 p.m.) and June 18 starting at 7 a.m. at the Arnprior Fairgrounds. Email ryansfishingderby@gmail.com or call 613623-7476 or 613-623-6018.

The Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital needs to achieve an integrated electronic patient record (E-PR) in order to support effective, efficient patient care which is reflected in our strategic goals.

Located at the front of the hospital, Inpatient C Entrance has recently opened. This entrance replaces the previous spot dominated by the blue canopy that once granted access to the ER waiting room and the Ground Floor.

Our commitment is to achieve this by 2015, consistent with the provincial government’s plan to realize an electronic medical record that will allow us to build a regionally shared electronic patient record, increase collaboration and communication between care providers, and promote improved quality and efficiency of care. In the Spirit of True Collaboration and with the shared vision of ensuring patient safety and confidentiality, and in the interest of working together rather than each hospital building their own system, it has been agreed to have one regional implementation of MEDITECH. To this end, Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital has partnered with our peers at: Bruyère Continuing Care, Queensway Carleton Hospital, and Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital. This is a great opportunity to work closely with our peer organizations to maximize our resources, talent and technology, and to live our value of innovation.

471832

When redevelopment plans placed the ER at the back of the building it also made sense to get rid of unnecessary stairs to create better accessibility. Before this entrance led visitors to the ground floor, now visitors enter directly to the inpatient unit on the first floor. To protect the privacy of patients and to ensure they have opportunity for rest, we kindly request all non-visitors refrain from using this entrance. Outpatient B Entrance is also located at the front of the building and should be used to access the outpatient clinics, the primary health care centre, the lab, physiotherapy, administration and the foundation office. Arnprior Councillors Dan Lynch, left, and Lyle Anderson take silver in Horseshoes in the Renfrew County Seniors Games and advance to the district competition in Smiths Falls in August.

Arnprior seniors bring home medals Several seniors did Arnprior proud at the Renfrew County Senior Games in Barry’s Bay June 1-2. Several seniors finished first or second to qualify to represent the Renfrew County at the District Competition in Smiths Falls Aug. 23. Gold medal winners included Rodney Hunter – 5pin bowling men’s singles 55+; Mary Hunter – 5-pin bowling, ladies singles 65+;

Michael Fazekas – 5pin bowling, men’s singles 65+; Ghislaine Perneel – 5-pin bowling, ladies singles 65+; Barbara Glasgow and Glenn Jamieson – bid euchre, open doubles; Fred Oattes – cycling. Silver medal winners included: Marilyn Robertson – 5-pin bowling, ladies singles; Lyle Anderson and Daniel Lynch – horseshoes, open doubles.

The Arnprior District High School Redman seniors girls rugby team finally met its match June 1. The Eastern Ontario champions lost 36-0 to rugby powerhouse Trenton in the title game of the Ontario championship. It was the team’s first loss of the year. But it gave them a silver medal in the OFSSA tournament. “That’s a pretty significant accomplishment,” said head coach Glenn Wallace. He said the players have every right to be proud, as they worked extremely hard to qualify for the Ontario championship tournament. In the final, the Redmen fell behind top-seeded Trenton early and could never get back to their game plan, Wallace said. The team made too many errors to have a chance against such a strong team as Trenton, he added. “They were uncharacteristic mistakes for our team.” When the team fell behind early, it began to feel the pressure and started unraveling. Trenton, which as won several

championships, took advantage of its chances and Arnprior didn’t, he said. “Despite the score, it was a wellplayed game.” ADHS started off the OFSSA tournament with a convincing 72-0 win over Trinity College of Port Hope. The team was very focused, Wallace said, noting it spent most of the game in the opponents’ end of the field. Arnprior also dominated its second game, beat St. Anne’s of Clinton 15-0. However, a sturdy St. Anne’s defense prevented the game from being lopsided. ADHS won its semi-final 12-7 over

host Norwood. Wallace said the game wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Norwood scored its try in the dying seconds of the game on a controversial play. “Norwood had a good defence … but it had to,” said Wallace. “We had the ball for almost the whole time.” While the ADHS team loses some key players to graduation, Wallace is hopeful the Redmen will be contenders again next year. Playing top level competition in the Eastern Ontario and Ontario championships is great experience for the younger players, Wallace said.

ADHS student excel at track against best in province Arnprior District High School students broke three school records and had eight top-10 finishes in the Ontario Track and Field championships June 2-4 in Sudbury. The OFSAA event is the third largest annual track meet in North America and the biggest in Canada. ADHS sent 22 athletes, its largest team since the ‘90s, and second largest from a school north of Toronto. This year the meet included representatives from 570 Ontario high schools. ADHS finished 11th overall in the male aggregate results, an outstanding accomplishment given ths event has the largest representation of high schools in any OFSAA sport.

Top 10 finishers included Jacob Plunkett in the junior boys 100-m (5th), 200-m (6th), and 300-m hurdles (Bronze); Brandon Terrell in the Ambulatory 100-m (Silver); Nathan Toman in the midget boys 10-m Hurdles (9th) and 300-m Hurdles (4th); Dylan Lecuyer in the junior boys javelin (9th); and the Midget Boys 4 x 100-m Relay team (5th). School records were achieved by Jacob Plunkett in the junior boys 100m (11.23 seconds), Brandon Terrell in the Ambulatory 100-m (13.24s) and the Midget Boys 4 x 100-m Relay Team (46.08s). Other top performers included Shawna Burnett in the junior girls pole vault, Darren Mayhew in the

midget boys pole vault, Cody Moore in the junior boys high jump, Laura Craig in the junior girls high jump, Liam Dey in the midget boys 400-m, Alicia Pan in the senior girls long jump, and the midget girls, junior boys, and senior boys 4 x 100-m relay teams. It is clear ADHS is working its way back to a perennial powerhouse in provincial track and field with recent results not seen since the ADHS provincial track and field fame of the ‘80s and ‘90s, said track coach Joe Lavoie. Congratulations to all track and field athletes who proudly represented the ‘Big Red Machine’ at tracks throughout the province this past spring.

Canadian race star Dave Connelly made a pit stop at McNab Public School to help raise funds for a little girl coping with cancer. Principal Heidi Robinson said she is a strong person and hopes the $1,000 or so helps the family with non-treatment associated costs. “This is a great way to show our support,” Robinson said. Connelly, who hopes this year will prove as successful as last year when he won two races and broke a track record, is on the national circuit. “It’s a step up. Camp Wanago staff gearing up for summer fun It’s that time again and the staff at Camp Wanago is eagerly anticipating another fun and successful summer. We have a ton of great trips and exciting games and crafts planned for the children this year. Camp Wanago runs throughout July and August and is open for children ages 4-12. The Arnprior Department of Parks and Recreation’s summer day camp is very well known and has been around for many years. This year we have brought back many favorite trips like Mont Cascades, Cosmic Adventures, Saunders Farm, and Calypso. We have also added some new trips to camp this summer, such as Pirate Adventures and Fun Junction. We will also be making some exciting trips in Arnprior such as the Arnprior Bowling Centre, the O’Brien Theatre, Sweet and Sassy Co. and more. We have had some new additions to our staff this year and know that the enthusiasm and energy of all staff will make for a great summer camp experience. Each staff member brings their own unique qualities and

ideas to camp to ensure that each and every child is having fun. Sarah Gibbons is joining us once again at Camp Wanago as one of our coordinators. Sarah has graduated from Nipissing University with a degree in Psychology and will be attending Canadore College in the fall for her final year in the Social Service Worker program. Her dedication and desire to work as part of a team makes her a good asset to the Camp Wanago staff. Our second co-ordinator, Kaitlin Greene, is joining us for her fourth year at Wanago. Kaitlin is a recent graduate of Nipissing University and will be returning in the fall to complete her Bachelor of Education. Kaitlin’s fresh ideas and positive attitude are qualities that we are glad to welcome back to camp this summer. Austin Granger is joining us for his second summer as a camp counselor but is no stranger to the Arnprior Parks and Rec department, as he is also a lifeguard at the Nick Smith Centre. Austin will be attending Lakehead University in the fall for his first year towards completing his Bachelor of Science. Austin is an energetic individual who likes to have fun

and will be a great asset to our team again this summer. We are also pleased to welcome some new staff members this summer. Patrick Beaudry will be attending Grade 11 at ADHS in September. His dedication and hard work as a volunteer in past summers makes him a great addition to the camp staff. Meaghan Shannon is also joining us for her first year as a Camp Wanago counsellor. Meaghan has completed her second year at Queen’s University in the Concurrent Education program. Meaghan’s enthusiasm and positive attitude makes her a great part of the team. The final member of the Camp Wanago staff this year is Stephanie Maclaren. Stephanie has completed her third year at Ottawa University majoring in Political Science. Her excitement and vast experience with children makes her a great addition to the camp staff. Camp Wanago and the camp staff promise fun games and crafts, new friends and experiences and most importantly a safe and fun environment. TREASURES TWICE FOUND It’s yard sale season in Arnprior with many streets in town holding sales on any given Saturday or Sunday. Kerri Bayford on Poole Street was planning on holding a second garage sale in order to deal with all the stuff her three kids and extended family have compiled. On Saturday, May 28, the rain took its toll on sales, she said. Photo by Derek Dunn

Nature

Liars and deceivers abound in nature MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

With a natural history textbook deadline confining me to my computer like a ball and chain, I eagerly take any opportunity to look at Nature in my backyard. I still need a few photographs for the project and fortunately some can be taken within metres of my desk. For the past few days the flowers on the Highbush Cranberry by our backdoor have been covered in insects. When I looked more closely, I was astounded by their diversity. There were small, gray Long-horned Beetles covered in the flowers’ pollen. Many small bees, some Diggers, others Leaf-shredders, were similarly dressed. A Giant Swallowtail, an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, and a Juniper Hairstreak sipped nectar. Although these range from the largest of Ontario butterflies (Giant Swallowtails are expanding northward at an incredible rate; we have had possibly 10 different individuals in our gardens the past weeks) to one of the smallest (the diminutive green Hairstreak only feeds as a caterpillar on Eastern Red Cedars, of which we have plenty), they all share one physical trait. All three sport hind wing tails that look like antennae. When feeding, the tails make the butterflies look as if they are facing the other direction, so if a predator grabs for the head, it gets a mouthful of hind wing instead and the butterfly escapes. When the swallowtails are flying, their tails might also serve to direct an attack to that disposable body part as well.

In addition to the butterflies and the bees, there were easily 20 species of flies. A few looked like “regular” flies, that is like small House Flies or Blue Bottle Flies, but many others looked like bees or wasps, some most convincingly. These imposters were taking advantage of the powerful protection owned by stinging insects. Hover Flies (also known as Syrphids) are harmless, but by looking like insects that are not to be messed with, they are usually avoided by birds. The similarity of harmless insects to well defended species was first noticed by the British entomologist Henry Bates, so the fascinating defence is called Batesian Mimicry. In Batesian Mimicry the common model is harmful while its less common mimic is harmless. Because of the abundance of bees and wasps and their similarity in colour (another syndrome known as Mullerian Mimicry), if a bird eats one it quickly learns to avoid insects of that bold and easily remembered appearance. Hence the advantage in wearing yellow-and-black or black-and-white patterns as do many Hover Flies. Some of the flies had their two wings partly shaded to make them look like four (bees and wasps have two pairs of wings) and a few pumped their abdomens up and down, just like a wasp often does, to further the illusion they were something they were not. Have a look at flowers and see if you can spot the cheaters. Odds are the question will soon arise: “is it two bees or not two bees?” The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

County lobbies to receive all of the HST from gas sales STEVE NEWMAN

steve.newman@metroland.com

Renfrew County council continues to lobby to receive money from the province’s harmonized sales tax on gasoline and diesel sales. Local MPP John Yakabuski, who has lobbied for all municipalities to benefit from the tax, may have more influence if his Conservative Party becomes the government following the 2011 provincial

election. Meanwhile, the county has followed up on Halton Region’s call to direct a “portion of the revenue derived from HST charged on gasoline and diesel sales to a new predictable funding mechanism that will allow Ontario’s municipalities to make the critical investments needed to be effective stewards of transportation infrastructure.” In fact, the county has gone a step further. May 25, county council called for the Ontario government to direct “all

revenue” from such sales to all rural and urban municipalities in the province. The resolution also stated that Ontario’s 2009 average fuel consumption sales projected the new HST revenue to be about $1.5 billion annually. The resolution also indicates that the Provincial-Municipal Fiscal and Service Delivery Review Panel (of which current Renfrew County Warden Bob Sweet was a member) “identified an infrastructure funding gap of approximately $3.8 billion (annually)” between the Ontario government and municipalities.

“All municipalities should share equally in the program,” said Warden Sweet. “This is a new pot of gold,” said Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack, noting several dozen Ontario municipalities fail to benefit from such gas-tax funding because they do not operate mass transit systems. Already, all Ontario municipalities receive federal gas tax money annually. “I think the logic is there … but it might be a bit of an uphill battle,” admits Renfrew County public works director Dave Darch. “Up here our transit system is our roads network.”

Chris Hinsperger of Bonnechere Caves and Dave Lemkay of the Renfrew Industrial Commission are new leaders of the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association. Hinsperger was elected president and Lemkay, who lives in Douglas, was elected vice-president at the OVTA’s recent annual general meeting. The AGM took place at Petawawa’s Twin Rivers Golf Club.

The past-president is Charlotte Gebhart of Serendipity on the River (Eganville), The board also features Renfrew County council’s representatives, McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell and Renfrew Reeve Audrey Green. The board is completed by Dennis Blaedow of Esprit Rafting (Davidson, Que.), Allan Symons of Canadian Clock Museum (Deep River), Sharon Taylor of Barry’s Bay Outfitters (Barry’s Bay), Coun. Isabel O’Reilly (Township of Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards), Marilyn Alexander (Pembroke Comfort Inn) and Coun. Bob

Hackett (City of Pembroke). “The Ottawa Valley’s tourism industry is on the cusp of a number of exciting opportunities that will benefit those businesses and organizations directly related to tourism, as well as all Valley businesses,” said the new president in a news release. “I am proud to be part of a group of people dedicated to realizing those opportunities.” OVTA, as the official destination marketing organization for the Upper Ottawa Valley, represents more than 210 tourism businesses. These include accommodation, dining and retail establishments, as well as events, attractions, rafting companies, outfitters, artists and galleries, and media and industry suppliers.

Age

Coming of June is Seniors’ Month,

an opportunity for all Ontarians to recognize and value the contributions made by seniors every day in communities across the province. Seniors’ Month is an annual celebratory tradition in which the contributions of seniors are acknowledged and honoured throughout the province. Ontario’s population aged 65 and over is projected to more than double from 1.8 million, or 13.7 per cent of the population in 2009 to 4.1 million, or 23.2 per cent, in 2036. The growth in seniors’ share of the population will accelerate after 2011 as baby boomers begin to turn age 65. Seniors’ Month events include award ceremonies, recognition events, socials and seniors’ information fairs. Ontario is one of the best places in the world to grow older. Ontarians across the province are encouraged to join in the celebrations taking place in their local community to recognize and thank older Ontarians who have worked hard and continue to contribute to the prosperity that we all enjoy today.
