After being launched with the Calling of the Clans Ceilidh tonight (Thursday), McNab Days shifts into high gear this weekend with four major events. The offerings for the fledgling McNab Days festival have increased dramatically this year, both on land and on water. Perhaps the most intriguing of the events will be the Braeside Riverdriver Festival this Saturday, June 25, which begins with a flotilla of heritage boats crossing the Ottawa River from Bristol to Red Pine Bay. Water craft of all shapes and sizes will land about 11 a.m. “It will be a very impressive sight,” said Heather Lang, a member of the organizing committee. The highlight for many will be the W.D. Stalker, the last operating Alligator boat in Ontario and perhaps the world. The boat was brought down from Renfrew County Expo 150, where it was a big hit, and was put into the Madawaska River at the Arnprior Marina late last week. However, the Alligator boat will not be the only attraction in the flotilla. Lang reports the response to the call for participants has been encouraging. There will be steam boats, Voyageur canoes, scows, steel logging boats, a steel sweeper boat used to pick up logs, pontoon boats, dragon boats and canoes, she said. See ‘BOATERS’, Page 2

Boaters invited to join flotilla Continued from front “There will be a lot of different types of heritage boats that have been used for logging,” said Lang. Another committee member, Dave Lemkay, said the flotilla will be an outstanding Ottawa River event. Boats leave Norway Bay wharf after a gala breakfast and send-off at about 9:30 and traveling about 4 mp-h to allow everyone to keep pace. It’s not too late to join in, he urged mariners. Boaters can launch early Saturday at Norway Bay. As viewers wait for the boats at Red Pine Bay, there will be entertainment. After the boats come in there will be a variety of forestry-related displays and demonstrations from rope-making to wood-carving. The festival will both inform and entertain, Lang noted. The committee feels it’s important to put the spotlight on what the river meant and still means to the community, she explained. “We want to show that the river is important part of our commercial history … and now is important for recreational reasons. “We feel we should be celebrating our waters.” Lang said Osborne Street will be closed off to through traffic to allow festival-goers to park alongside the road for easy access to Red Pine Bay. The Arnprior Scouts will be directing traffic. There will be a number of parking spots at the Red Pine Pay for seniors and the disabled. A number of community partners have joined with volunteers and McNab-Braeside council and staff to assist in preparing the park for the flotilla arrival. Mayor Mary Campbell applauded McNab Day volunteers and sponsors at Tuesday’s council meeting. Canada Day in Braeside JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

McNab Days will wrap up with the traditional Canada Day festivities in Braeside July 1. Coun. Brad McIlquham told council Tuesday that the only change in this year’s event is that the poker run will end at the Braeside Beach instead of the fire hall in the village. The end of the poker run will be held in conjunction with the unveiling of a new sign at the beach, subject of a great deal of work by the township. The poker run will be held between 9:30 and 10:15 a.m.. It will be followed by the colourful parade through the village, starting at the fire hall about 11 p.m. After the parade, the festivities move up to Braeside R.A. Centre for a barbecue, cake, games and euchre.

Arnprior gears for Canada Day STAFF Ready to paint the town red and white July 1? The Town of Arnprior has long been providing an array of activities for residents and visitors to enjoy on Canada Day and this year is no different with a slew of events on the schedule. The highlight for many is the giant fireworks display, provided jointly by the Arnprior Fire Department and parks and recreation department and delivered from the island below the Madawaska Bridge at 9:45 p.m. Start the day off at the Masonic Hall on James Street in Arnprior at the Lions Club pancake breakfast. Get your eat on with the Lions later when they move to Robert Simpson Park with a barbecue. The Optimist Club welcomes bikers, bladers, skateboarders, wagons, carriages and more for the annual children’s bicycle parade. Registration is at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church and the parade to the park leaves at

JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

Arnprior’s 14 postal workers were still on the picket line Wednesday, but they don’t expect they will be there much longer. The federal government has introduced a bill forcing the locked-out workers back to work. Although the NDP Opposition is attempting to delay passage of the bill, it’s expected the legislation will be passed by week’s end when the House of Commons is scheduled to shut down for the summer. Arnprior Canada Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) picket captain Terry Martin said Canada Post employees want to go back to work, but would rather have a fair, negotiated settlement rather than having a new deal imposed on them from above. The government’s overriding of bargaining removed the corporation’s motivation to come to a fair agreement, he said. “I think Canada Post wanted that (to be bailed out by the government),” he added. The mood on the picket line Tuesday was muted with workers looking forward to returning, but pessimistic about their chances that an arbitrator will give them

the wage and pension benefits they are seeking. The workers stressed that they are not on strike, but are “locked out.” Martin noted that, as in other postal offices, the Arnprior CUPW members showed up for work Monday to deliver pension and social assistance cheques. CUPW members received an honorarium of $50 for the work, with many donating it to charity. CUPW started a series of rotating strikes, mostly in urban centres, two weeks ago. Canada Post, claiming it had lost as much as $100 million in revenue, locked out its workers last Wednesday. CUPW officials echo the local concerns, arguing that the danger of having an arbitrator is that it penalizes postal workers and rewards Canada Post for locking out employees and stopping mail delivery nationwide. The bill legislates wage increases that fall significantly below Canada Post’s last offer, they note. The union claims the bill would take almost $900 out of the pockets of an average full-time postal worker during the four years of the agreement. As well, the “heavy-handed interventions will damage labour relations for years to come,” says the union.

Manning the picket line in front of the Arnprior Post office for the past week are lockedout workers, from left, Norma Lavellee, Amy Crilly, Barb Dorzek, Andrew Marcellus, Sylvia Burnette, Wayne Brydges, Dan Farrell, Shelley Farrell, Terry Martin, Bob Brown and Phyllis McQuade. The workers said they have only had one customer shout at them in anger. One customer donated $50 to the cause and they have received coffee and doughnuts from other supporters, they noted. Photo by John Carter Arnprior workers noted the last time they were out was in 1997. At that time, the federal government imposed back-to-work legislation, but it included a provision, unlike this time,

that ensured the mediator arbitrator consider importance of good labour-management relations. See STRIKING Page 4

PSP awarded new defence contract Now Open in Two Locations–RENFREW & ARNPRIOR JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

Workers at a beleagured Arnprior body armour plant received some good news last week. Pacific Safety Products (PSP) announced June 8 that it has been awarded a new contract through competitive tender from Public Works and Government Services Canada for the supply of protective products to the Department of National Defence (DND). The contract is initially worth almost $500,000 and has options for two amendments over the next two years. The custom products will be manufactured at the company’s Arnprior facility for delivery over the next six months. “PSP is uniquely positioned to understand the challenges for ensuring compliance to demanding ballistic and material specifications to guarantee both

durability and life-saving performance in the field,” said company CEO Doug Lucky. “This award confirms that PSP remains the trusted supplier to the Canadian military of protective armour solutions for soldiers.” PSP, a leading North American manufacturer of advanced armour solutions, is also the incumbent supplier to DND for the Fragmentation Protective Vest (FPV), Fragmentation Throat Protectors and other specialized protective products. It is the largest body armour manufacturer in Canada. The mission statement of Pacific Safety Products is “We bring everyday heroes home safely.” The company had a tough time in 2010 with sales to government down dramatically in the recession. The company went through a major restructuring and a failed purchase bid.

Asphalt plant move not likely in works for Miller’s john.carter@metroland.com

McNab-Braeside council has made some suggestions that could help alleviate the effects a temporary asphalt plant in the Braeside Quarry is having on neighbours, but the company hasn’t been receptive so far. Mayor Mary Campbell said she has suggested the company look into moving, using new technology or setting up a neighbourhood advisory panel. She made the comments after hearing 10 Braeside Ridge residents raise a number of noise, odour, safety and water contamination concerns. The 10 residents shared their concerns and frustrations about the plant, which has operated for the past three paving seasons, with McNab-Braeside councillors at their planning advisory committee June 14. Campbell said she has asked Miller’s if it would consider moving to another location in the township,

“but they don’t want that discussion.” The company agrees it works with advisory committees in some areas, but has never made a move to have one in McNab-Braeside, she said. Bill MacMeechan, who bought is home on the ridge more than 30 years ago, charged that Miller’s doesn’t have to have a regard for the bylaws because the township doesn’t uphold them. The former Smith’s (predecessor to Miller’s) employee said that when Nick Smith ran the operation he took steps to ensure residents weren’t negatively impacted. The residents should be getting better protection for their taxes, he added. Barb MacMeechan said that the plant has made it impossible for the couple to even try to sell their property. “We’re just waiting to see what happens.” The company is in the process of applying for a permanent plant at the quarry.

Cherilyn Outhwaite said it is “ridiculous” to run a noisy generator all night. She said because of the noise she never opens her windows and rarely goes outside. Sean Moore said that the noise from the generator at night and trucks makes it “very difficult” for the neighbours to enjoy their property. “It’s not the best place to locate that type of operation in the community,” he added. Norma Moore said the emissions affect her ability to breath and, as a result, make it difficult to maintain her garden display business. Mark Popiel urged councillors “to come and see what we’re living with.” His family rarely also goes outside anymore because of the emissions from the plant, he said. Dr. Randy White noted the quarry is in an earthquake zone, which raises concerns about fuels leaking into the groundwater in the event of a ‘shaker’.

Air Canada and its employees reached a deal last week, ending a short strike just before the federal government was about to legislate the workers back. The 3,800 employees, members of the Canadian Autoworkers, reached a

tentative agreement with Air Canada after more than 12 weeks of grueling negotiations. After the tentative agreement was announced last Thursday, picket lines were taken down. The deal was made after the company backed away from its demands for major pension concessions. That issue will be sent to arbitration.

An Arnprior man has been charged with robbing a store in Ottawa. Jamie Wright, 25, is charged with robbery, wearing a disguise and possession of weapons. The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit reports it laid the charges in relation to a commercial robbery May 23 on Montreal Road. Police allege accused, while disguised, entered the business and demanded money from the clerk while brandishing a large knife. After an investigation, police arrested Wright June 16. He appeared in court Friday, June 17. Anyone with information in relation to the robbery is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116 or call Crime Stoppers tollfree at 1-800-222-8477.

Three Timmins residents are facing several drug-related charges after being stopped while travelling through Arnprior June 14. While conducting traffic patrols in Arnprior, Constable Ben Sidney of the OPP Highway Traffic Safety Division stopped a grey, 2003 KIA Rio for traffic violations at White Lake Road and Highway 17. During the course of his investigation a substantial quantity of drugs and cash were located in the vehicle, report police. A 31-year-old Timmins man was charged with failing to comply with an undertaking (2 counts), possession for the purpose of traf-

ficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking marijuana, possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine and possession of property obtained by crime. He was held in custody for a bail hearing. A 28-year-old Timmins man was charged with possession of property obtained by crime and counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, heroin and marijuana. A 26-year-old Timmin woman is charge with possession of property obtained by crime and counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, heroin and marijuana.

CRISIS AVERTED

Arnprior OPP report laying four charges of impaired driving in the Town of Arnprior in the past couple of weeks. In one case, an Arnprior man has been charged with dangerous driving while escaping police. On June 7, Arnprior OPP officer Constable Denys Baranovskiy and Auxiliary Constable Mike Ledgerwood were conducting a RIDE check on Baskin Drive when a pickup truck failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed. The vehicle crashed though a set of security gates of a private residence and struck a tree at which time the occupants of the vehicle ran away on foot. An OPP Canine Unit, assisted by Emergency Response Team (ERT) members, conducted a track for several hours. On June 8, further investigation resulted in criminal charges against a 33-year-old Arnprior man. He is charged with dan-

HOUSE EGGED: Among the 185 calls for service the Renfrew OPP responded to last week, was a report of a home on Mill Ridge Road in McNab-Braeside being egged. The public is asked to continue to report suspicious people and activities to police at 1-888-310-1122. CELL FRAUD: A Greater Madawaska

There were no injuries reported Monday afternoon when construction on a private residence on John Street in Arnprior ruptured a gas line. Emergency and gas company officials attended and the street was closed for a short time as the problem was fixed.

Eastern Ontario’s first swimming death has prompted OPP to issue a plea to parents to impress on their children the need for water safety. A 15-year-old Ottawa male died Saturday after failing to surface after jumping off a rock cliff at Charleston Lake. With the warmer weather and school holidays right around the corner, the number of activities taking place on the water will increase significantly, note police. Noting that swimming, and boating come with a certain amount of risk, the OPP remind parents and caregivers to properly supervise young children near the water and educate older youth about water safety. Young children should be within arms reach at all times while in the water. Don’t leave them to answer a telephone; they need constant supervision. Water wings or floaties and water toys are not life preservers, don’t treat them as such. “Older kids who can swim still may need to be reminded of safety rules, such as always swim with a buddy, and when boating everyone on board needs to be wearing a life preserver. “Make water safety a top priority for a safe summer.”

woman reported June 17 that she discovered someone had opened a cell phone account in her name. The victim indicated the fraudster used her social insurance number as identification. The cell phone company is currently investigating. This case unfortunately serves as a reminder to people to closely guard identification, say police. A social insurance card is rarely used, yet people often carry it in their wallet. Consider storing it in a safe place, with other ID not often used. Monitor your credit history through Trans Union or Equifax, urge police. FISHING FRACAS: On Sunday, June 19 in the early evening, OPP officers responded to a report of an assault at a fishing hole on Limestone Lake Road in Greater Madawaska. When the 52-year-old male victim arrived with another man, he fired several shots from a rifle into the water. This upset a man nearby who yelled at the men and left. He returned later and began arguing with the two men. The suspect picked up a rock and struck the victim in the head. He also pulled out a knife threatened the pair, and proceeded to damage their fishing gear and vehicle. The male suspect fled the scene in a black pickup with an aluminium fishing boat in the back. OPP Constable Tina Hunt is investigating. DOMESTIC DISPUTES: Renfrew OPP officers responded to eight domestic disputes last week. In two cases the officers are continuing to investigate.

On June 8, Arnprior OPP Constables Helen Paterson and Barry Richardson were conducting a RIDE roadblock at White Lake Road when they checked a silver 2002 Honda. As a result, the vehicle’s two occupants, both 21-year-old McNab-Braeside residents, are facing charges. The driver has been charged with failing to comply with an undertaking and the passenger is charged with possession of a Schedule II drug. On June 13, Const. Helen Paterson was conducting patrols of the Gillies Grove area when she located an intoxicated male who was on an undertaking not to consume alcohol. The 28-year-old Vanier man has been charged with breaching of undertaking. Detachment officers attended 163 calls for service in the past two weeks. Included were 22 false alarms and 911 calls.

CARRYING THE TORCH FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS Arnprior OPP officers, Community Living Renfrew County South clients and staff, and Special Olympians hit the streets of Arnprior June 15 for the 24th annual Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The participants gathered at the LCBO store on Daniel Street before heading across to John Street for the parade through the downtown. The runners then crossed the Madawaska Bridge to Tim Hortons, one of many supporters of the event, for juice and Timbits. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest source of funds for Special Olympics Ontario, which backs more than 17,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Arnprior area has many active Special Olympics teams and athletes. Leading the parade was Arnprior’s own gold medalist Brandon Terrell, while Doug McNulty, left, and Ken Johnston followed with the Torch Run banner. McNab Days festivities move to Waba museum Sunday Continued from Page 2 The other major Saturday event, the Burnstown Women’s Institute 100 anniversary celebration provides more recognition for the history of the area. The public part of the ceremony starts at 1:30 p.m. in the Burnstown United Church and features a re-enactment of the founding meeting and stories by broadcaster Mary Cook. The White Lake WI is also getting into the act by adding some spice to their euchre at the White Lake WI hall this Friday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. There will be special entertainment and food involved. On Sunday, June 26, the Scottish Festival at the Waba Cottage Museum grounds in White Lake runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with five pipe bands taking part in a tattoo at 1 p.m. Also on the Waba grounds will be the McNab Healthy Living/Sunday Stretch, which has moved inland from Red Pine Bay/Osborne Street this year. A number of health and environment related activities are planned from heritage walks and a cycle route to a solar energy display and a rural market. Campbell told council Tuesday that if the expected numbers attend the McNab Day events, the festival should make money. The estimated expenditures are almost $8,000 and revenues guessed at about $11,200, thank to several major sponsorships. “It’s been a lot of work … but we’re really looking forward to it,” said Campbell. ALLIGATOR BOAT Dave Lemkay of the Renfrew Industrial Commission, one of several sponsors of the Braeside River Drive, reports the Alligator boat is in the Ottawa River and ready to take part in Saturday’s bay-tobay flotilla. The bringing of the heritage steam tug boat to the Valley was made possible in part to significant support by Shaw

Lumber of Pembroke and Arnprior’s GE Hitachi, he said. He noted it was a complicated, and expensive, matter to safely off-load the boat into the Madawaska River by crane. The launching was accomplished with the skilled driving of Shaw Lumber’s Clarence Lorbetskie, Ray Kohlsmith’s crane and “favour from the gods among others,” he reported. The lift onto the float went well at the airport thanks to Jim and Tom Savage with Pembroke Crane Rental, he said. John Shaw had the tractor and trailer all rigged and the Simcoe crew made sure it sat squarely on the deck. “At Arnprior, it went pretty smoothly, all things considered,” Lemkay said. “We had OPP escort along Madawaska Boulevard and around the museum corner. Renfrew Rent-All was there with the generator, discharge pumps and plywood patches.” Fortunately, Barbara and Peter Haughton were on hand with their 30-foot tug boat, as was Dan Amyotte from Logs End with his tug boat, because the Madawaska current pulled the Alligator overtop the stone cribs downstream from the wharf. “Two tug boats are always better than one,” said a relieved Lemkay. “There were a few tense moments when the trailer took a couple of lurches and with some considerable water coming in, the three sump pumps and two 2” discharge pumps proved to be cantankerous for a while.” But once generator circuits and hoses were cut to length, the bilge pumping stayed ahead of the leakage, he said. He explained that the boat being dry-docked all of last year has left it dried out to the point that pumping was critical for the tow across the Ottawa River to Bristol. “In the end, everyone shook hands, high-fived, thumbs-upped and generally gloated over our success. I know I did.” For more information about the Alligator boat, see www.workingforest.com/veteran-tug-boat-take-ply-ottawa-river.

Griffin Toole gets a front-row ride in the Special Olympics Torch Run, with Arnprior District High School teacher Brian Reid providing the push power. Also participating are Michael Farr, left, with a collection bucket, and ADHS students Paul Proulx and Hunter Blair. Participants raised pledges and collected money along the route. “The community is really involved and are wonderful in supporting our athletes,” said Diane Shane of Special Olympics. “The athletes feel great to see that they are part of the community.”

Young Barred Owl sighting good news

Be a donor Imagine having the potential to save eight lives and enhance 75 more. It’s all possible by registering online as an organ and tissue donor. More than 1,500 Ontarians are on the list waiting for an organ transplant. Every three days, someone in this province dies while waiting for a life-saving transplant. Thousands more are waiting for a tissue transplant that could help enhance their lives. You can change that. All you have to do is take a few minutes out of your day to register as an organ and tissue donor online. Signed donor cards are no longer an acceptable option; the card may not be available when the information is needed and your wishes will go unknown. The online registry stores your information in a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care database and shares your decision to donate with the Trillium Gift of Life Network, Ontario’s organ and tissue donation agency. When you register, you ensure your decision to donate will be carried out in the event of your death – donation is only an option after all lifesaving efforts have failed. Granted, death is a morbid subject – especially when it comes unexpectedly. But your organs and tissue won’t do any good for anyone when they’re six feet under. Corneas could help a woman see the world around her. A skin graft could help a burn victim heal. A new pair of lungs could give a child with cystic fibrosis the breath to carry on. A new heart could give a father the chance to watch his son grow up. Anyone can donate regardless of pre-existing medical conditions and lifestyle. You can also choose what to give. The doctors assess the organs and tissue and make the decision from there as to what’s viable. The only requirement is that you are 16 years of age or older. Don’t leave the burden of choice up to your loved ones. Register online at www.beadonor.ca, visit a ServiceOntario centre or download and mail in the Gift of Life consent form to become an organ and tissue donor. Save a life. Save eight lives.

To the editor: When the Barred Owl appeared in Gillies Grove this past winter, we were hopeful it would nest here once again. From our observations, as with the Red Shouldered Hawk, the Barred has not nested in the Grove for several years, so this young Barred sighted this week is testament to a successful breeding her in Arnprior, after a long absence. Society seeks more public involvement in Grove Editor’s note: The following was written by members of the board of directors of the Land Preservation Society of the Ottawa Valley. Paris has its Eiffel Tower, New York has Central Park and Arnprior has the Gillies Grove – all places with unique attractions for visitors. Now the Grove is about to get a handsome new entrance and an information kiosk. The Land Preservation Society of the Ottawa Valley, local volunteers who provide stewardship for the 57acre nature preserve on behalf of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, has called for bids to construct the

Originally, it was part of the estate of the Gillies family, 19th century lumber barons who wanted to keep a stand of the old growth forest that previously fed the Ottawa Valley logging industry. In 1967 David Gillies left the grove and the Gillies mansion to the United Church of Canada in the hope that it would become a retirement home for ministers. The United Church found the property too costly to maintain and in 1986 English Oblates of Eastern Ontario acquired it. They proposed to sell part of the land for housing for a housing development in order to help support the Galilee Mission Education Centre. The housing proposal would have preserved a portion of the Grove, but many local residents felt the whole of the Gillies Grove should be kept as a living legacy of our history within Arnprior. In 1990 local volunteers began a ‘Save The Grove’ movement. They initiated a variety of fundraising efforts that included selling sweatshirts, buttons and professional photos. There was a wonderful response from the citizens, community organizations and groups from afar, all in an effort to save this old growth forest in our backyard.

entrance system (pictured above). It will consist of a decorative iron gate to provide access to the Grove, an information kiosk, and a fence to better define the Ottawa Street entrance. This is the latest step in a long campaign to save and maintain this stand of old growth trees with its unique flora and fauna. Michael Runtz, the well-known naturalist who began his career birding in local fields, once called the Gillies Grove “the heart of Arnprior.” But the Grove has had to survive some near death experiences and lately this grand property has been getting some negative publicity.

In 2001 after more than a decade of effort, their hard work helped purchase 57 acres of the old Gillies Estate, now known as Gillies Grove for $400,000, a price well below market value. The Nature Conservancy of Canada with its broad organizational reach and mandate of land preservation was chosen as a natural partner to hold title to the land. Two years later, the Nature conservancy signed an agreement with the Land Preservation of the Ottawa Valley, which had grown out of the original Save The Grove Committee, to manage the Grove on behalf of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and thus becoming stewards of the Grove. With the future of the Gillies Grove assured, many members of the LPSOV volunteer base moved on to other activities. The organization went into a period of inactivity. Recently, concerns were expressed about the ongoing community involvement in the upkeep of the Grove and what appeared to be a growing indifference. To address these concerns, in 2010 local volunteers consisting of both fresh and old faces formed a new LPSOV board The

group is dedicated to preserving the Grove and of enhancing the educational and aesthetic experiences the Grove presents for all to enjoy. They felt that one problem with the Grove was that the entrance at the end of Ottawa Street had fallen into disrepair and was not clearly defined. Visitors were not quite sure when they had entered the Grove and what they would find there. So, as a first project, the new board set about to create a more welcoming, informative entrance. After a year of planning and discussion, work on the new entrance is about to get under way. The Ottawa Street entrance gate, fence and information kiosk will assist the public in becoming more familiar with the history of the Grove and its rich inventory of the flora and fauna. This is the first of many projects proposed as part of the group’s mandate. The LPSOV applauds the generous participation of citizens and the municipal councils of Arnprior and McNab-Braeside in their ongoing support of the Gillies Grove. It welcomes all citizens to volunteer as a ‘Friend of the Grove’. Please email marsgarden@sympatico.ca to get involved.

Return of the body invaders Creatures that live inside human bodies, tunnelling through the skin and erupting into view while their human hosts are still alive - science fiction movies certainly seem imaginative. While one might wish to credit the writer of the horrendous script for his creativity, in reality the idea was stolen from a much more imaginative source. The movie Alien is based on real natural history events, many of which occur right in your backyard. Many kinds of wasps and flies live this lifestyle. As larvae, they invade the bodies of other animals where they devour the insides of their host while it is living. They only emerge from its body when transforming to the adult stage. How these “aliens” get inside is a fascinating tale. Some parasitoids (unlike parasites, these invaders always kill their host) lay their miniscule eggs on leaves. After being inadvertently swallowed by a hungry caterpillar munching the plant, the eggs hatch inside its gut. Others lay their eggs on the creature. Still others, including all of the wasp parasitoids, inject their eggs into the animal. Some para-

Michael Runtz Nature’s Way sitoids paralyze their prey and burrow them in the ground with their eggs. Now, animals have an immune system that does not appreciate intruders and normally foreign objects are attacked by blood cells. But the invaders are clever. Along with the eggs they inject chemicals that shut down the host’s immune system so their larvae can devour its flesh with impunity. My favourite body invader is a very large ichneumon wasp, Megarhyssa. If you have seen one of these beauties you may have run for cover because it seems to carry a stinger longer than its body. Actually, it is not a stinger but a drill that is used to access larvae of Horntails that lay hidden in trees. The wasp finds a Horntail by tapping its antennae over

the bark looking for the odours of fungus that the adult Horntail injected near its egg. Horntail larvae eat the fungus as it grows in the chamber it chews in the wood. It is also thought the wasp has vibration sensors in its feet for detecting the target as it chews. Once a Horntail is detected, the wasp drills into the wood. This is no easy task for the drill is far too long. First it must be withdrawn into the wasp’s final body part, the metasoma. This is raised into the air and inflates like a balloon. Inside the sac, the base of the drill and two long filaments that guide it can be seen as they coil up. When the drill is under the body perpendicular to the tree, it releases chemicals that dissolve wood fibres. Slowly the drill works its way through the wood to the Horntail, which is paralyzed with venom as an egg is laid into it. Watch for these body invaders all summer long. But unlike the movie Alien, the unwilling host has no actor double and ends up quite dead. The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@ start.ca.

Michael Runtz took these photographs showing the power of nature when a microburst hit his home in Cranberry Lake June 8 (as chronicled in last week’s column). As of Saturday, he still had no Hydro or Bell full service (11 days and counting), but the generator and a patched-up phone line have provided partial power and a working phone. “It sounded like a freight train coming at me full steam and I just got in the house as it hit,” he says, adding he saw water being lifted up from the lake. “Pretty scary stuff, though. Especially when the little dog and the pair of red shoes came flying by,” he quipped.

Advanced Toastmasters hold Charter party in Arnprior On May 27, Valley Vintage Advanced Toastmasters celebrated their ‘Charter Party’ in grand style at the Arnprior Legion. Fifty-two Toastmasters and guests from the Valley and Ottawa were in attendance to honour the sponsors, mentors and 20 founding members of the newest Valley Club, which officially chartered June 30, 2010. There were excellent speeches, improvisations, a delicious turkey dinner and entertainment provided by the ‘Spirit of 69 Brass Ensemble’. In 2009, there were five Toastmasters clubs in the Ottawa Valley - Chalk River Labs, Deep River, Pembroke, Renfrew, and Arnprior. Lynne Zander, who was a member of three Toastmasters clubs, Arnprior, Los Amigos and Above and Beyond Advanced in Ottawa, had a dream to establish an Advanced club in the Ottawa Valley to better serve members who had already achieved the CC (Competent Communicator) award and wished to enhance their Toastmasters experience. Zander asked her friend

and fellow Toastmaster Fran Watson if the Renfrew Club would sponsor the new club. The name Valley Vintage Advanced was chosen. Why vintage? This word represents quality, maturity, experience and excellence. Twenty members were needed to Charter with Toastmasters International. Many current Toastmasters showed an interest in the new club because it would be an opportunity for experienced members from Ottawa and the Valley to meet twice a month and share all their valuable experience in speaking, evaluating and training. Zander’s motto was: “Share what you know in order to grow.” Members could expand their horizons working with Toastmasters outside of their club. In every meeting there is a special section called ‘Valley View’ where for five minutes, a member can speak about the Valley … tourist attractions, businesses, historical sites, etc. This way, all members learn about what the Valley has to offer.

The club meets the first Friday of the month from 7-9 p.m. at the Quail Creek Retirement Centre, 450 Albert St. in Renfrew. A following meeting, on the third Friday of the month, is held in a restaurant /café in a different town. This gives all members a chance to visit other areas in the Valley. Toastmasters International empowers people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. It is the leading movement devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality. Through its member clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking – vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership, foster human understanding, and contribute to the betterment of mankind. Established in 1924, Toastmasters International uses time-tested programs that are continually updated to meet participants’ needs. Burnstown WI to celebrate 100th birthday Saturday GEORGIA QUINN Burnstown WI

The Burnstown Women’s Institute is holding a 100th anniversary celebration this Saturday, June 25 as part of McNab Days. The public is invited to the Burnstown United Church about 1 p.m. to view heritage exhibits and a quilt to be unveiled for the occasion. Broadcasterauthor Mary Cook will be telling stories between 1 and 2 p.m. and the WI will stage a re-enactment of its first meeting 100 years ago at 2 p.m. The Burnstown Branch of the Women’s Institute was organized on Jan. 11, 1911 at the residence of Mrs. John Forrest with 21 members enrolled and Mrs. J. F. Blaine president. Burnstown was the first branch in Renfrew South to be established and as time went on not only did it grow but other branches formed as well. Glasgow, Lochwinnoch and Calabogie were developed, and in 1913 Bonnechere Valley and South Horton WIs joined in. Since winters were harsh it was decided the meetings should be held at the Forrest home as it seemed to be a central point for everyone at that time. Programs in the branch were first planned from month to month and then in 1912 committees were appointed every three months. Topics that were vital at that point in time were ‘How to get hens to lay in winter’, ‘How to make hard and soft soap’ and ‘What can an individual do to stomp out tuberculosis and prevent it’. Discussing and debating current events in the news and legislation were also a part of the agenda. And then book reviews were introduced. The Institute would also purchase the books to be circulated to other institutes, and most importantly it was stressed Canadian authors were to be supported. The women had drinking fountains installed in their schools and after much lobbying, medical inspections were introduced as well. In 1912, a rink was built for the community. For safety for everyone, the Institute drew up a 25 Rules of Conduct so that “no roughness” was allowed. Season tickets were $2.25, family rates $6 and one night of skating was 10 cents. The caretaker’s salary for the season was

NOTICE OF PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE NO. 2 Reconstruction of COUNTY ROAD 71 (Matawatchan Road) From 6.5 km South of HWY 41 to County Road 65 (Centennial Lake Road) The Process In 2009 the County of Renfrew initiated a Class Environmental Assessment screening for County Road 71 Matawatchan Road. The County has prepared a conceptual design for the road improvements for the remaining section of the road from 6.5 kilometres South of Highway 41 to Centennial Lake Road (County Road 65) a distance of 3.3 kilometres. This section of road is currently in poor condition and in need of rehabilitation. Burnstown as it was 100 years ago when the Burnstown Women’s Institute was formed. Photo courtesy Burnstown WI $15 and lanterns were purchased at $7.50 per dozen, as soon hockey matches would begin. Not long after, carnivals were held with prizes being given by the Women’s Institute. In 1916 work for the Renfrew Fair was started and as years past on this grew and the branch offered special prizes. They revived the Burnstown Library and canvassed the community to obtain 50 subscriptions towards a traveling library. The sick and shut-ins were always remembered with fresh fruit and flowers. Flowers cost 50 cents and members gave a special offering to cover such expenses. Socials were held as another form of fundraising. The cost of admission was 15 cents and they were held at the Good Templars Hall. Today, we know this building as the Burnstown Post Office. In 1916 an organ was purchased for the hall and the cost was $15. The Good Templars paid $12 rent for use of the organ for two years at their meetings. By 1917 a donation of $214 was donated to ‘War Work’; two dozen pillows were made for the Red Cross along with bandages, knitted socks and quilts were made as well. Gold signet rings were also purchased for the ones enlisted. The boys in the trenches were remembered with boxes sent overseas as they still are to this day. The year 1918 is now upon us and Children’s Aid was generously supported as was the Canadian Institute for the Blind. The women’s Institute discussed buying the church for $125, but since items were still needed to support the troops it was decided in order to help the church kitchen equipment needed to be purchased. Events could now be held not only at the hall but at the church as

well. More domestic demonstrations were presented at meetings, such as ‘Cheese and Candy-making’, Baking Bread and ‘How to make items out of flour bags’. The time is 1933, and looking back the women saw how much they had accomplished and how much more they could offer; a decision was made that since the social events had been such a success at 15 cents it will be raised to 25 cents. This would not only be for the price of admission but refreshments for all as well. As the water flows along the banks of the Madawaska, the sands of time have quickly yet gracefully brought us to the current date celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Burnstown Women’s Institute. We have an amazing group of women ranging in the ages from 30-90 years of age. We not only have the love, respect, and broad knowledge to share with each other, but for our community as well, as we continue to learn, teach and assist our growing community with treating everyone as a whole. As we continue traditions and set new goals to accomplish, this year has been busy and we are only halfway there. At Christmas and Easter the BWI managed to make special dinners for the less fortunate, we continue to do sewing at Bonnechere Manor, contribute to the Adopt-a-Road program doing roadside clean-up along Calabogie Road twice a year and a couple of us Hiked For Hospice raising $530. But most of all, it’s the excitement and enjoyment of working together to celebrate 100 years of history. And to commemorate it, a beautiful quilt has been made by Institute members and will be unveiled at the anniversary event.

Compassion in the service of care, Jamie MacDougall and the Order of Canada

Jamie MacDougall is the founder and Director of The Ottawa Hospital’s Institute for Rehabilitation Research and Development. He grew up in Overbrook, a brisk run from the General Campus. He went to high school at Lisgar, beside City Hall. His commitment to Ottawa is obvious. It is his commitment to Canada’s Deaf and persons with disability that led to his investiture in the Oder of Canada, on May 27. “You immediately think of all the people that made it possible, especially those with disabilities who inspired me. It is validation for thousands of people,” says MacDougall of the honour. Deafness and disability is personal for MacDougall. His parents, Peter and Gladys, were both deaf. His daughter, Paige, suffered a serious head injury at age 17, bringing his awareness of disabilities even closer to home. “People with disabilities have greater potential than we realize,” says MacDougall. “They have to overcome a lot of stereotypes…Just like everyone else, they aspire to realize their full potential.” Rusty Wendt, the head Carleton University’s Department of Psychology, understood this calling early on, convincing McDougall to take a summer job working with deaf parents seeking better means to communicate with their hearing children.

MacDougall left Carleton for McGill, getting his Masters and PhD in Clinical Psychology, studying the psychological impact of sensory deprivation and the link between deafness and literacy. Moving to Newfoundland’s Memorial University, he studied the impact of resettlement on cognitive development in children. From there, he went on to Rochester New York’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Then, back to McGill, where he spent 40 years teaching in the area of deafness and disability, and lead the Mackay Centre for Deaf and Disabled Children. His research is rooted in the everyday challenges faced by the Deaf and persons with disability. “Whether its children or adults,” says MacDougall, “I’ve been touched by the courage of extraordinary people.” Those people, in turn, have enabled valuable research. “The strength of clinically driven research is that it is both practical and sophisticated because of the problems it allows us to explore”. During one particularly complex case with a deaf Inuk in Nunavut who was said to have no language, MacDougall discovered the Inuit had their own sign language – Inuit Sign Language. His ability to extend clinical work beyond the hospital into the real world sets MacDougall apart. Working with advocacy groups such as the Canadian Hearing Society and the Canadian Association of the Deaf, he fought to ensure people with disabilities enjoy the full protection of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. His example brings The Ottawa Hospital a step closer to its vision of providing each patient with the world class care, exceptional service and compassion we would want for our loved ones. ANNUAL REPORT

Caring Over Distance

Dr. Jason Sack and Cheryl Dalbec

Connecting for health is the theme behind ADMH’s growing telemedicine program. It connects patients with specialists many kilometres away, without the added stress and cost of travel. Patients are connected via two-way videoconferencing powered by the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). This past year, more than 130 patients have benefited from this enhanced service at ADMH. For example, local patients can meet with specialists in Ottawa via OTN. Dr. Tilak

Mendes provides follow-up care to patients with movement disorders and Parkinson’s Disease and Dr. Phyllis Hierlihy offers a monthly endocrinology clinic. Specialists located in Arnprior also see the benefits of telemedicine. Dr. Jason Sack leads a successful Teledermatology service at the hospital. Patients throughout the region who have already been assessed by Dr. Sack can now schedule their six month follow-up appointments via OTN, eliminating the need to

travel back to Arnprior “The commute to Arnprior often translates into both parents and students needing to take time off work and school driving to and from the appointment,” explains Dr. Sack. “We were looking for ways to make things easier for patients and families.” OTN is also connecting Arnprior staff to e-learning opportunities. Staff can attend college and university classes or participate in training sessions through their professional organizations – all without extra

travel and cost. They can also attend virtual regional and provincial meetings. OTN is the largest telemedicine network in the world, and provides access to care for patients in every hospital and hundreds of other health care locations across Ontario. In addition to clinical care, OTN facilitates the delivery of distance education and meetings for health care professionals and patients. ADMH is proud of this valued partnership that brings care closer to home.

Report from the Chief of Staff Dr. Christine Schriver, Chief of Staff I took on the duties of Chief of Staff at the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital in January 2011. It has been a very interesting and educational six month experience so far, in the effort to catch up with the rest of the senior management team. My past 20 years as a clinician did not entirely prepare me for the administrative side of hospital work. It has been a busy year at ADMH and we are proud of the work we are doing and the efforts put forth for quality of care and patient safety. This past year has been full of accomplishments. In September 2010, the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital and the Grove Nursing Home received a full three-year accreditation award — the highest level that an organization can receive from the Accreditation Canada. In addition to receiving

this three-year accreditation; the surveyors found staff to be honest, engaged and committed to providing quality care. Their positive feedback reaffirms that our focus on patients/residents and staff is the right thing to do. We are also well on our way to electronic patient records. Eventually this will allow your doctor to access all of your test results electronically and provide you with better care. The Emergency Department redevelopment is already improving the care we deliver to patients. Through the addition of the triage room and the triage process we are able to see the sickest patients first. We have also added a GEM (geriatric emergency medicine) nurse, this pilot project with the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) has been implemented to identify seniors who present to the emergency who may ben-

Visiting neurologist Dr. David Atack

Diagnosing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to ALS ADMH is always vying to add new medical services in our efforts to keep care close to home. Dr. David Atack is a visiting neurologist who has been offering clinics and consultations at ADMH for over 10 years. In 2010 he added nerve conduction studies and EMG’s to the list of services provided. These tests help to diagnose diseases that damage muscle tissues and/or nerves. 476501

These are the tests administered when diagnosing a variety of issues such as muscle related illness, nerve root compressions, diabetic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, muscular dystrophy, and conditions such as disk degenerative disease as well as ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). Having lived in Almonte since residency, he is familiar with small towns

and recognized the importance of offering nerve conduction studies and EMG’s outside the city in the rural hospital environment. Since adding these additional services over 170 appointments have been booked. Wait times are low as most patients are able to see Dr. Atack in less than a month with a referral from their family doctor.

efit from increased services in the community. Recently the hours of Diagnostic Imaging have been extended into the evening. This should ease access for many community members who previously had difficulty getting to the department prior to 4 p.m. A new Patient/Resident/Staff safety council has been developed at the Grove to improve communications and to help identify safety and quality improvement for our residents. This is certainly not a complete list. There are many projects in the planning stage, including the computerization of patient record. I look forward to being part of a medical and an administrative staff that continue to find ways to improve quality of care and patient safety. Dr. Christine Schriver, Chief of Staff

Partnering With Resident Safety In Mind The Grove Nursing Home focused on resident safety through partnerships this past year. Adding the expertise and assistance of others truly made the Grove a better place to live and work. The United Way of Renfrew County and Carefor both continued their long term support of the Grove through their generous funding of the Day Program. This program is open to members of the community including those who have Alzheimer’s and/or dementia. This program is very important to the caregivers in the community as it gives them several respite hours a week.

The Grove also embarked on a partnership with MediSystems, which is a pharmacy specializing in providing services to nursing and retirement homes. They provide the Grove with a clinical pharmacist who reviews all medications to ensure optimal safety of the resident and can provide information to doctors on medication best practices. In addition, MediSystems provides all pharmaceuticals to the Grove and delivers them pre-packaged for each resident along with the time of day it should be taken. This procedure reduces omissions and ensures the proper

medication is taken at the proper time. The use of MediSystems requires submitting orders electronically and in order to ensure reliable and consistent Internet connection another new partnership was forged. E-health partnered with the Grove through the installation of fiber optic internet lines. This Internet connection provides the Grove with the most reliable form of communication to ensure medication orders, nursing documentation and care plans can be submitted and accessed on a regular and timely basis.

Welcoming A New Doctor ADMH was pleased to welcome a new doctor to the family medical practice and the ER Department this past year. Dr. Asser Ali is a graduate from the University of Ottawa. He first became acquainted with ADMH through a rotation with Dr. Mark Robson. “The exposure to rural medicine from Dr. Robson was terrific. I also like the fact that here I can have my own family practice while also seeing patients in the emergency room” said Dr. Ali. His office is located in the Primary Health Care Centre sharing the space with Dr. Trang. Since his arrival as ADMH he has

begun to build his practice with a good cross section of the population and enjoys helping his patients through a wide range of health care needs, everything from chronic health disease to mental health issues to prenatal and baby care. “Dr. Ali worked here in the past and is very familiar with our community and with our hospital. It is a pleasure to have him to our medical team. It is a relief to have a new colleague in both Primary Health Care and Emergency Medicine” said Chief of Staff Dr. Christine Schriver.

ANNUAL REPORT

Year End Report–Chair of Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer This past year marked significant strides to improve access to services, create a safe and welcoming environment, and achieve a balanced budget, despite significant cost pressures at both the hospital and the Grove. One of the strategic priorities of our organization is to provide access to care closer to home. This year new programs and services introduced to our growing and aging community include –endocrinology telehealth program, sharing diagnostic images to hospitals across the Champlain LHIN, and access to EMG studies. Our Residents and families of the Grove have confirmed we are meeting needs as evidenced by the satisfaction survey results. The survey reported that over 95% of respondents rate the quality of care and services as either very good or excellent. Similar high results were received at the hospital for patient satisfaction for the overall care received - specifically 96.8% for ER and 93.9% for inpatient. These results could not have been achieved without the focus and the commitment of our staff, doctors, volunteers and board members to continuously improve our organization. This journey of continuous quality improvement would not be successful without the dedication and passion of our staff, physicians and volunteers. Working in teams, we have adopted many new best practices such as the surgical checklist, medication reconciliation, pleasurable dining at the Grove and lean process improvement studies increasing patient flow. In short, our care is better, safer, and meeting more of the expectations of our patients and residents. Looking ahead to next year, we foresee a continuing focus on patient and resident safety and where appropriate, bringing more clinical services to our community. We also anticipate

fostering a greater number of partnerships with other healthcare providers as we know that building these relationships improves the patient and resident experience. It is a journey to achieve our vision and this past year marks several notable milestones along this road. We are proud of the physical improvements made to our facilities over the past year. Our new Emergency Department represents a facility that is capable of providing the highest quality of care in an environment that respects patient privacy, improves infection control and provides better patient flow. Our nursing home’s recent internal renovations have created a more home-like environment at the Grove, thanks to newly decorated “spas” and dining rooms. This past year, Accreditation Canada awarded us full accreditation without condition. In order to achieve this level of distinction, the corporation scored an outstanding mark of 91% compliance, for the 1172 standards. In addition, the Grove Nursing Home also received the Quality of Care Award from the Ontario Association of Non-Profit Homes and Services Seniors. These awards confirm that we are heading in the right direction to achieve our vision of “being recognized for exemplary care making your health our priority”. Other achievements that are consistent with our Balanced Score Card Goals include: additional patient documentation within the electronic patient record, a reduction in staff vacancy rates, and an overall staff satisfaction improvement of 8%!

Steve Hudson Chair Board of Directors

Emergency Department Renovations Complete At long last the 18 month Redevelopment Project of the ADMH Emergency Department has come to an end. This new space is a little over 6000 square feet and will allow our doctors, nurses and staff to provide the highest quality of clinical space for our growing and aging community. “I am proud to say that the project was completed on time and on budget” said CEO Eric Hanna. The construction of this project began in the summer of 2009. Prior to the renovation a lot of changes were required to bring the facility up to date: the ER medical staff had an obstructed view of the most critically ill patients in the observation area; the exam cubicles were too small to accommodate a stretcher; ambulances couldn’t fit under the roof of the drop off area; the waiting room was small and lacked privacy; there was many accessibility challenges from lack of handicapped washrooms to a multitude of stairs; and not enough power outlets to accommodate all of today’s necessary medical equipment. The renovation project addressed all these concerns and many more. Patient safety, infection control and patient privacy were all taken into account in the redesign process. The addition of the triage area and having patients assessed by a nurse prior to registering ensures our sickest patients are seen first. The triage room also allows for private conversation to take place between patient and nurse. Beyond the emergency waiting room, the entire department is brand new. Observation areas are in clear view of the nursing station. The trauma room is brighter and increased in size. In recognition of the various manufacturing plants, factories and farms in Renfrew County and surrounding areas, a decontamination room was built to deal with chemical or industrial accidents. And at long last ambulances can now fit under the ambulance canopy. The redevelopment of the emergency department also permitted changes to other parts of the hospital. Health records received a new home with a lot more storage, diagnostic imaging can now be accessed directly from the ER, the Auxiliary has a brand new gift shop and the parking lot at the front of the build-

ing was designed for optimum traffic flow. The two entrances from the parking lot welcome patients and visitors to the hospital. Like all the other entrance they are clearly marked with an alphabetical letter. This will help staff direct patients and visitors to the appropriate area of the hospital. A final thank you for this project needs to be given to the staff, doctors, nurses, volunteers and patients for their understanding and perseverance when dealing with the noise, the inconvenience and the constant changes that took place throughout construction. The final cost of this project, $12.5 million, being recognized for exemplary care; making your health our priority, priceless.

Still Going Strong at the Auxiliary Caring Foundation and are proud that the work we Over the past year our numerous accomplishdo makes a difference to so many. ments far outweighed the challenges faced by the Bernice O’Connor auxiliary. On September 20, 2010 we officially Auxiliary President became incorporated complete with a set of revised bylaws. We also were pleased to recognize five of our local members as Provincial Life Members in the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario. We had a focus on volunteer recruitment and are pleased with the almost 20,000 volunteer hours we provided through our work with the Grove Nursing Home, the Opportunity Shop, the Gift Shop, the Grove Committee, Palliative Care, the HELPP lottery, the In-hospital committee and Sewing Committee. In addition, the Auxiliary also remained committed to supporting other groups in the community. Bursaries were awarded to two graduating students interested in pursuing further education in the medical field and we continued our support to the Partners in Caring Foundation with a pledge payment of $125,000. We also directed financial assistance of $50,000 towards the purchase of an Olympus Processor Light Source and The new face of the Opportunity Shop a Tub Shower Room at the Grove. We also proudly opened our new gift shop in November and updated the exterior of the Opportunity Shop with a fresh coat of paint and a new sign. We also continued our support of the Activity Department at both the hospital and the Grove, replenishing their accounts to benefit both patients and residents. We will continue to assist the Grove, the hospital and the Partners in The grand opening of the Gift Shop November 2010

Supporting our Hospital and Nursing Home The Partners in Caring Foundation had a successful year and was able to raise significant funds to assist with the purchase of much needed medical equipment. The foundation was formed in 2005 under the leadership of former chair Tommy Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan along with a dynamic campaign cabinet and dedicated board, paved the way to raise $3.5 Million in our community so that a small, out of date emergency room could be upgraded and accommodate everyone in our community. All former and current foundation board members now have a sense of pride and accomplishment with the completion this year of the emergency department. Besides raising money the foundation is also takes its responsibility to properly thank all donors. A donor recognition committee spearheads all donor thank you events such as the celebration BBQ when the ER Campaign goal was met. This event thanked community members, staff and doctors who contributed to the fundraising success of

the ER Campaign. This past year the donor recognition committee held a more intimate event, the unveiling of plaques that now hang in the emergency department. These were plaques created by a local artist and commissioned in honor of local business and individuals who made a substantial donation by sponsoring the construction of rooms and areas within the emergency department. Another significant milestone with the foundation was the creation of an Employee Continuing Education Fund. The Hospital and Nursing Home are interested in retention and recruitment and the Foundation responded to the request with this program. This fund is open to all permanent employees at both the hospital and the Grove. We look forward to the next year and assisting with new projects that support both the hospital and the Grove. Cupid’s Closet, Manicures and Pedicures When asked “Why do you think you have been successful?” my response is usually the same – I love what I do and I do what I love. I believe beautification – although not the most important aspect of life is still an uplifting, positive process for men and women both. When one takes care of themselves it’s all that much easier to care for themselves; this dedication to doing what I love is why my customers keep coming back. It’s easier to be made comfortable and contented by someone who has a genuine passion for their craft. I am knowledgeable and I believe in my products and services and so do my clients, which lends confidence in my abilities to either first timers or regular clients. My creativity and my overall base of knowledge and experience derived from working under the moniker of other companies – I saw the flaws in their approach and I decided that I couldn’t – I wouldn’t fall into the same cookie cutter. I insist upon giving the highest quality products and supplies for my services available to me. I have been in the adult product business off and on for seven years. Cupids Closet

was started in August of 2009. I had a store front for 1 year and then brought the business back into my home in September 2010 – which has been very successful as I can work one on one with my customers, giving them my time and privacy of an individual sale and consultation. For the manicures I have been doing them for a year – trained at a local spa. Been working on my own since January of 2011. I do not have any family members working for me however my family is very supportive of what I do and without their support I would not be able to achieve what I have. My daughter is always available to me to have her toes painted in some fun design! When I found out I won the awards I was deeply touched. It showed me that my commitment to good customer service and treating my clients as friends not bank accounts has made a difference. By winning these awards it only validates that I am on the right track with my businesses and am providing Arnprior with a service that they truly appreciate and need I want to thank my clients for voting for me and I truly appreciate their business!

Law firm success due to family values

Introducing The Rimulator

Tierney Stauffer say thank you Arnprior for your confidence, trust and votes for the Readers’ Choice award. Our introduction to Arnprior has been enjoyable and rewarding. Working closely with David Moore and Art McLean, we have been warmly welcomed into the business community and look forward to continue providing legal services to our clients. The transition from the west end of Ottawa to Arnprior has been very smooth. The reason for this is the culture and attitude in the firm. “The roots of the firm are based on strong family values”, according to Managing Partner Stephen Tierney. “It was started by myself and my two brothers, Frank and Dana, and later included our friend Ian Stauffer.” Frank states, ”Our Dad was a great mentor to us. He made it clear that if we looked after our clients, our staff, and the books, we would be successful.” Siblings Kerry and David are law clerks in the firm and the next

Dana notes “The result can be seen in the lunchroom when law clerks, admin staff, lawyers and partners are elbow to elbow chatting, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.” Ian Stauffer adds,”For the client it is important to deal with lawyers who enjoy what they do and thrive at finding solutions to problems the clients are trying to deal with.” Whether it is buying or selling a house, a personal injury, business contract, tax law issue, mediating a dispute, drafting a will or an employment dispute, the firm has put together a well trained legal team you can trust. Drop in to our office at 141 John Street and meet our lawyers Alex and Dana as well as law clerks Colleen and Jennifer. Again, thanks Arnprior.

Mather Insurance & Real Estate Ltd. has served Arnprior and area for over 52 years Mather Insurance & Real Estate Ltd. is very honoured to have been chosen for the Chronicle Guide’s Readers’ Choice Award by the people of Arnprior and area. Mather Insurance & Real Estate Ltd. has been serving Arnprior and the surrounding area for over 52 years. Situated on John Street in Arnprior, we are pleased to have the founder of the company, Edna Mather, continuing to visit the office daily to chat with clients and staff. Originally, in 1958 we began as a Real Estate Agency and this side of the business continues today with Greg Townley being our Broker of Record. Greg has been in the real estate business for over 25 years and has seen and continues to see many changes in the Real Estate market in Arnprior. Greg’s clients enjoy his pleasant, professional manner as well as his attention to detail. His sincere and honest work ethic has been a contributing factor in his success as a Real Estate Broker. The addition of Insurance to the agency happened a few years later. At that time, women were few and far

between when it came to owning or even managing an insurance agency. Edna’s determination paid off and her husband, Oris Mather was able to join the business around 1970 and gradually took over the insurance operation leaving Edna more time to concentrate on real estate. Their daughter, Wendy Mather joined the business in 1976 and has been managing the insurance side of the business for the last 17 years. She and the other insurance brokers in the office are well informed of the changes in the insurance industry and offer knowledgeable, professional advice on the best product suited to each individual’s needs. Together, both sectors of Mather Insurance & Real Estate Ltd. continue to provide the best customer service possible for real estate and insurance clientele. We value our present clients and look forward to serving new customers as our business continues to grow.

questions. We also have a full service repair shop that can handle most auto repairs including: mufflers, alignments, computer diagnosis, oil changes, suspension work and brakes to name a few. From all of us at Kanata Rims and Tires, we’d like to say thank you to our customers and the community of Kanata for selecting us as a Readers Choice Award winner once again this year. For more information about our services you can reach us at 613-836-8688, or visit Kanata Rims and Tires at 25 Edgewater St, Kanata. Hours: Mon–Wed 8 am to 6 pm; Thurs., Fri 8 am to 7 pm; Sat 8 am 5 pm.

Great food, great changes at Our Place in the ‘Prior Our Place in the ‘Prior, having completed their first year of operation in May 2011, is rapidly expanding their services at 24 Elgin Street West. A major renovation of the second floor has provided a dining room for Dinners and Special Events. The renovation lasted five months and included major structural repairs of the building, combined with preserving the heritage attributes

of the facility. With an approach of cooking from basic ingredients and using unique combinations, Our Place’s Culinary Team is looking to provide an upscaled home cooking feel while still maintaining a relaxed atmosphere for the customer. Open Tuesday through Sunday, with Live Jazz most Saturday nights; why not give them a try.

Extensive renovations and restorations From building decks, fences, drywall and painting, extensive renovations, to custom work and restorations. There’s almost nothing that we will not do. We specialize in Power of Sale cleanups. Over the last three years of business I have found the best route to a successful company is respect, honesty, and to be responsive from quoting and designing right through to completion. Rodger’s background is extensive from learning how to weld at the age of six with his father, to opening his first business called Rodger’s Railings at the age of 16. Graduating from High School Rodger took Law at Algonquin College and from there joined an Engineering company for ten years doing everything from welding, inspections, purchasing, health and safety, design, installer and shipper/receiver to name a few.

Rodger progressed to a high tech company in Carleton Place and worked as a Facility and Health and Safety manager for 10 years. In his heart Rodger has always wanted to be his own boss and his dream was always to be able to do something that, when complete, constituted full satisfaction. I have reached that goal! I want to thank everyone that voted for me for the 2011 Media Choice Awards. There’s nothing that better rewards your work than appreciation from your customers. I really want to thank my wonderful girlfriend, Jill and my children for enduring my long hours and late nights to reach my goals and my dreams. ADHS rugby players reflect on thrilling season SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Anytime during the spring season that the Arnprior District High School senior girls rugby team found a note on the changeroom door that said: ‘Meet at park,’ they knew what to expect – sprints on the Robert Simpson Park Hill. “My worst enemy,” says player Liz Orenstein with a laugh. It seems, however, that all the time on the hill paid off as the team posted the school’s best ever results after an impressive season on the field coached by Glenn Wallace and assistant Zack Robitaille. “Mr. Wallace always said you’re just cheating yourself if you don’t do it,” says player Orenstein, who along with her teammates returned from the recent provincials with a silver medal after losing the gold medal game to Trenton. Arnprior, the Eastern Ontario champions, lost to Trenton in the Ontario championship, bringing home a silver OFFSAA medal. The winning season made for memories that will last a lifetime for the players and laid the foundation for future success for

ADHS rugby players Shannon Roesler, from left, Kaitlyn McLeod and Liz Orenstein formed strong bonds with their teammates and coaches this season. Photo by Sherry Haaima the rugby team, say three of the players, who sat down with the Chronicle-Guide recently to reflect on the season. Orenstein was a team member for the past three years and says she enjoyed the winning drive shared by teammates. “Everyone of us is extremely competitive. They created a monster,” says Orenstein with

a grin. “EOSSAA was amazing and getting to experience a higher level of rugby was great.” While it was difficult to not snag the provincial gold medal, the team’s success was evidence of their dedication. “All our hard work paid off,” says Orenstein. She plans to try out for the Queens University team when she heads to Kingston this fall.

What will she bring forward with her from her rugby experiences? “Just the hard work and dedication it takes to be good,” says Orenstein. The hours of practice, fitness and strength training, not to mention the dreaded sprints required by coaches, were all worth it in the end, she said. Roesler has been playing the sport for four years. Though the girls considered season’s end to be a heartbreaker, she describes the year as “fantastic.” The season was a great culmination to several years of playing together. “We became more of a team this year because of everyone having played together senior and junior,” she says. Her teammates are fun and “extremely competitive,” she says. She holds her rugby memories dear. “For me, the highlights weren’t always the medal-winning games,” said Roesler. “It was what led up to it.” The practices, bus rides and down time brought the girls closer together. The medal games do stand out for her, though, particularly,

the EOSSAA game versus Rockland, a team that ended the Redmen season last year, which was probably the sweetest of all. It was a hardworking game that took a lot out of all the players so the win was that much more thrilling. “That was probably the best moment of my life,” says Roesler. BUILDING ON SUCCESS The loss to Trenton, while difficult, will help the team grow stronger in the end, says, McLeod. It’s her second season and she’s impressed with how the team members gelled. “Everyone just came together,” she said. “Whether we were friends in school or not, we became one team. Definitely I made a lot of friends on the team that I wouldn’t have known before.” She praised the coaches and their support, which helped on and off the team. All three girls expressed much thanks on behalf of their team to coaches, parents, fellow students and the community who all came together to get the team all the way to the provincials.

Politics

Despite the NDP’s comments to the contrary, the federal budget is good news for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, claims MP Cheryl Gallant, Speaking in Parliament last week about the “positive benefits” the passing of the federal budget will bring her riding, Gallant also took the opportunity to thank voters in her first speech in the new Parliament for their strong vote of confidence. “I pledge to faithfully represent their interests to the best of my ability,” she said, noting the majority had chosen to elect a national, stable, majority Con-

servative government. She said the federal budget has a number of important measures that will benefit her riding, including $405 million for Atomic Energy of Canada in Chalk River. “The Conservative Party of Canada recognizes that, in order to be an environmental world leader, we need to focus on clean air, water, land and energy, and nuclear is the key to any national emission reduction plan,” she said. “I have worked very hard to keep the Canadian Neutron Facility, the CNF, and the need for a new multi-purpose research reactor on the science agenda of our country.” Gallant said the budget also keeps military spending at last year’s level and includes construction of a new Chinook helicopter hangar at CFB Petawawa.

NEW-LOOK GARBAGE CANS Jenn Stack, left and Alexa Moffatt were among Arnprior District High School Grade 10 arts student who painted garbage cans in bright colours for the town recently. The project was the result of a partnership between the school and Arnprior’s parks and recreation youth program. The goal is to encourage people, including students, to be more aware of the cans and as a result use them to the benefit of the environment. Ten of the 11 colourful garbage cans have been placed in Robert Simpson Park with the other one at the Nick Smith Centre. Photo by Cole Gordon

Cook added this venture shows how Tracey’s is involved in the community. Every year, they fundraise for Hospice Renfrew, and a donation jar was set up for the cause at the ice cream launch. Cook has been enjoying Tracey’s ice cream since she was a little girl. “It was Centreside Douglas then,” she recalled. She remembered one occasion when she wanted an ice cream cone, and her mother unexpectedly took her to Centreside. “I was crying so hard, I couldn’t tell the guy what kind of ice cream I wanted, so he gave me all three flavours they had at the time – strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. It cost a nickle.” Following an interview on Valley Heritage Radio with Dai Bassett, and a few words from VHR advertising and marketing consultant Gerry Bimm, everyone in attendance lined up for healthy scopes of the Mary Cook ice cream. People not at the launch won’t have a wait to try a Mary Cook Ice Cream Cone. It is on sale now.

If you like ice cream – and who doesn’t – the newly named Mary Cook Ice Cream at Centreside Dairy is definitely worth a try. Already, a group of about 200 people who attended the official unveiling of Cook’s ice cream last Friday are sure to be on board. Valley Heritage Radio – where Cook hosts a radio program on Saturday mornings – hosted the launch of the new ice cream flavour. Melany Tracey and staff members of Tracey’s Ice Cream were on hand to provide the first scoops. Centreside Dairy (makers of Tracey’s Ice Cream) sponsors Cook’s show. One morning at Heritage Radio, it was suggested just in conversation that the long-time Valley author and storyteller be honoured with her own ice cream. “One thing led to another,” Tracey recalled. “Her love for ice cream,” made this an easy decision, Tracey said. “Then we had to come up with a flavour,” Cook said. “I thought, ‘we have the best maple syrup in the world. What about maple syrup?’” “There is maple ice cream,” Cook added, “but it’s artificial, not with true maple syrup. And we’ll put a walnut on top.” “I can’t tell you how grateful I am to Melany and Mark (Tracey),” Cook added. “I think it’s very, very exciting, the highlight of my career. It’s a true honour. I’m so thankful Tracey’s Ice Cream got behind this. “I played a small role, naming the flavour,” she said. “I’ve never had a dog or cat, anything, named after me. Now I have ice cream.”

Heat prostration comes on quickly IAN STUPP Pet Talk

Heat prostration can often occur on moderately warm days, but the problem is always worst during late July and August. Cooler morning temperatures may prompt pet owners to take their animals with them on that morning trip to the grocery store and while they are inside, the thermometer is rapidly rising. Dogs and cats respond to heat differently than humans do. The time it takes to run just a few errands can mean the difference between life and death for the trapped animal. The most frustrating sight that one animal lover can witness is a dog or cat literally boiling to death while the owner is off in some store. Although the windows are opened slightly and the vehicle is parked in the shade, the interior of a vehicle on a summer’s day can reach well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. For those of you who

must travel with a pet in the spring and summer, please use some common sense. On a warm, sunny day, windows collect light, trapping heat inside the vehicle, and pushing the temperature inside to dangerous levels. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. For most pets, temperatures above 100 degrees can quickly be fatal. The early signs of trouble are panting and a warm, dry skin. Within minutes, the animal may have a blue tongue and gums, a staring expression and a high temperature. Vomiting sometimes occurs, followed by collapse and, soon after, death. All of this may happen within 10 minutes. Pets, more so than humans, are susceptible to overheating. While people can roll down windows, turn on the air condition-

er or exit the vehicle when they become too hot, pets cannot. Pets are much less efficient at cooling themselves than people are. Dogs are designed to conserve heat. Their sweat glands, which exist on their nose and the pads of their feet, are inadequate for cooling during hot days. Panting and drinking water helps cool them, but if they only have overheated air to breathe, dogs can suffer brain and organ damage after just 15 minutes. Short-nosed breeds, like pugs and bulldogs, young pets, seniors, or pets with weight, respiratory, cardiovascular or other health problems are especially susceptible to heat-related stress. Ian owns and operates Wags & Whiskers Pet Grooming and Puppy Kindergarten at 118 John St. North. For comments or suggestions, he can be reached at 613-623-6200 or info@wagsandwhiskerspg. com.

In October 2009, Rhea Ferguson’s father, Bill, was diagnosed with esophageal gastric cancer at age 59.

After successfully undergoing treatment at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, the family received some devastating news – the cancer was back, and this time, it was inoperable. Ferguson also knows more about the need for cancer research than the average person. She recently completed her Master’s degree in cancer epidemiology at McGill University, has worked with cancer researcher Dr. John Bell at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and is currently working as a database manager for the Hospital’s ovarian cancer bank. “Cancer research has always been a big passion for me,” said the 26-year-old Ottawa native. “There’s a history of cancer in my family. I lost all my grandparents to it.”

June 23 2011 - ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE

THE OTTAWA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Ferguson, who is riding as a member of the Cancer Trailblazers, the OHRI Cancer Centre team, said she reached her fundraising goal of $1,500 in just two weeks. “People are so generous,” she said. “Everyone knows someone who is affected by the disease. “It would be amazing to have another treatment option that is… not so hard on the body,” she said. “The research needs to continue.” With her father’s health rapidly declining, she said she will be thinking about him when she does the ride on Sept. 10. “I’m hoping to be able to tell him about it,” she said. To support Rhea Ferguson’s ride, or to join her mother, Sheila Ferguson, as a volunteer, visit www.ridetherideau.ca

Looking for a way to make a difference, she learned about Ride the Rideau, a 100 km cycling fundraiser from Ottawa to Merrickville to support cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital, and immediately signed up. “It’s raising money for where I work, and it’s going to where my dad was treated,” she said. “It was a perfect fit.” Ferguson’s mother, Sheila, also got on board as a Ride the Rideau volunteer.

Ride the Rideau participant Rhea Ferguson with her parents, Sheila and Bill.

“My mom and I are involved because my dad is dying of cancer,” she said. “We want to do something for him. It’s a personal cause for both of us.”
