Workers at one of Arnprior’s largest manufacturing plants began walking the picket line in the rain Wednesday. Sandvik Materials Technology Canada, makers of round stainless steel and nickel alloy seamless tubing, made a final offer at almost midnight Tuesday. The 150-member Canadian Auto Workers union rejectPhoto by Derek Dunn ed it in favour of a strike. Many of Sandvik’s 150 employees gather behind the Arnprior plant Wednesday on the first morning of their strike. They are looking for pension and bereavement plan protection, along with a small wage increase. The See SANDVIK Page 5 company says international economic uncertainty and provincial demands have stretched its bottom line.

Arnprior residents are back to weekly garbage pick-up starting Wednesday, Aug. 3, thanks in large part to a fiery speech by Reeve Walter Stack at Monday’s council meeting. In a dramatic twist, just enough councillors sided with Stack to reject staff ’s recommendation to go with a cheaper option that would mirror the current bi-weekly winter pickup. In her report, environmental engineering technologist Abby Barclay said Tomlinson would do three years (with an optional two
more) at a little over $374,000, plus fuel surcharges and HST for 39 weeks of pick-up. “(It) will provide the town with the best service for the town’s waste management programs and enables flexibility in the contract,” Barclay wrote. Stack rejected the “best service” and “flexibility” statements because they were mere assertions with no arguments to back them up. However, on the cost-savings aspect he counted with anecdotal evidence before making a general claim. Stack said while door knocking during the election campaign, many residents – especially those with young families – complained about the bi-weekly pickup.

One showed him a garage with two weeks worth of diapers inside, emitting a terrible stench. He cited the “dozens and dozens” of garbage bags tossed in the mall dumpsters. Rats are in town now, he added. He insisted the current program is causing a health and safety problem. “For the tax rate people pay in this town, it is beyond me why we can’t pick up the garbage once a week,” Stack said. “It’s a problem I heard lots about in the election last fall, and I’m sure others at this table did, too.” See ARNPRIOR COUNCIL Page 3
