Main Street School of Music hosted The Show 2011 to showcase the talents of the school’s 15 students.

Road work on Van Dusen Drive and elsewhere in Arnprior dominated much of the discussion at the June 27 town council meeting. Councillors want to resurface Van Dusen Drive, which snakes behind the airport and was part of the 1988 annexation to Arnprior. The paving is being prompted by a group of the lengthy road’s homeowners, who recently filled council chambers demanding the work be done. “The road is in desperate need of paving and its condition is widely affecting the residents,” penned Robert Verch in a letter to council from Van Dusen residents. The anticipated 9 per cent hike to Arnprior water bills next year - thanks in part to the current freeze - will not go ahead as planned. At Monday’s meeting council heard an update from treasurer David Pollard on two water plant projects. He also revealed that interest rate charges to pay for the projects have fallen.

Robert Carr plants his torch after calling the McDonald clan Thursday evening at the Calling of the Clans/Ceilidh held at Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens to kick off the McNab Days festival. McNab Days took a major step forward on the weekend, attracting hundreds of people to four major events. The most dramatic moment came Saturday when a flotilla of heritage craft, including the world’s last operating Alligator forestry boat, arrived at Red Pine Bay after crossing the Ottawa River from Bristol. About 400 people lined the beach to welcome the mariners and enjoy the Riverdriver Festival. Meanwhile, inland the Burnstown Women’s Institute packed the Burnstown United Church in a celebration of its 100th anniversary. The next day, a Scottish Festival, building on last Thursday’s Calling of the Clans Ceilidh, was held at the Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens. See ‘FOUR’ Page 4

If the health unit has a credible reason for pulling out of Arnprior, Mayor David Reid has yet to hear it. The Town of Arnprior fired off a tersely-worded letter to Dr. Michael Corriveau of the Renfrew County and District Health Unit objecting to closure and the “lack of public process” leading to the decision. “No advance notice was given nor public consultation held on this decision and that is unacceptable to our community,” reads the letter. Spokesperson Catherine Bloskie said the health unit was “surprised” to receive a letter on May 17 from Arnprior District Memorial Hospital (ADMH) that, in order to make room for the new family health team, the unit’s three-member staff will have to pull out of 1,200-square feet of space at the hospital. The province announced a family health team for ADMH in August 2010. “We didn’t have any indications at all,” Bloskie said. Although plenty of office space

details on when and where are unknown at the time. Asked to address public disappointment at the loss, Bloskie was upbeat. “I would think the same number of staff will be working in Arnprior, and even additional from Pembroke.” Reid, caught between having to show he is fighting for the town and admitting the game is over, said he is capable of accepting a good business case when he hears one. Problem is he hasn’t heard it. And he’s not happy with the process. “It would have been proper for them to approach us first,” he said. “You want to fight for what’s fair. If someone makes a case, I’m big enough to recognize it.” Meanwhile, the issue arose at Wednesday’s Renfrew County council meeting with Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack saying the notification process left much to be desired. “There’s no reason we didn’t get a call,” he said. Admaston-Bromley Mayor RayeAnne Briscoe suggested a letter come from Warden Bob Sweet asking the health unit improve its notification process.

DEREK DUNN

The frequent rainstorms during June haven’t caused much damage to public infrastructure in Arnprior or McNab-Braeside. Roads have been softened and six to 10 calls of basements flooding were made to town hall, but not much else, according to Reid. Water caused minor problems at the Nick Smith Centre, but that could have more to do with roof repairs than anything else, he added.

Arnprior’s Historic Theatre

Fri., July 1 - Thurs., July 7

Councillor ready to return Veteran Arnprior Coun. Mark Willmer is due to return to work at town hall next week, it was learned at Monday’s council meeting. Willmer has missed most of 2011 after being hospitalized for several weeks. He asked not to be paid during his absence; the town agreed.

McNab-Braeside council approved the appointing of two fire station captains June 21. The captains, who have come up through the ranks, were recommended by the fire committee. David Herbert is the new captain of Station #1 (Glasgow) and Kevin Murray now captains Station #3 (Braeside). McNab-Braeside deputy fire chief Dave Hartwick presents Murray with his new captain’s epaulet as fire committee members Brad McIlquham and Robert Campbell look on.

Continued from front The drop from previous council’s conservative projection rate of 7 per cent, which was built into the $15.8 million cost to expand the Water Filtration Plant and Water Pollution Control Centre, actually came in at 4.17 per cent. That means an annual savings of more than $300,000 over 20 years. “It’s about $6 million,” Mayor David Reid said the next day. “It’s excellent news for the town. It’s going to have a positive impact for 20 years.” He said water bill clients will likely see no changes in 2012 or see a “minimal” increase. The interest rate setting, put in place by the Bank of Canada, will have other positive effects on the municipality. For instance, it means the town’s capacity to

borrow, which was at a tight $4 million, is now back up to $12 million. However, Reid is cautious, noting just because, for example, a private citizen has money in the bank doesn’t mean they should start spending it. Pollard said as much to council, that the town is carrying heavy debts to pay for infrastructure work. “We still have a significant debt load,” Pollard said. Not only that, but the Water Pollution Control Centre project went over budget by $245,000. Both Reid and Pollard said that, considering the two projects totalled almost $16 million, paying another almost quarter of a million dollars for “provisional items” is not surprising. “It’s pretty close,” Reid said.

exists in town, Bloskie said administration of services will be scaled back to Renfrew and Pembroke. To search for space here may disrupt services, she said. “Our primary concern is to maintain a continuity of service,” Bloskie said, adding that attempting to find a new office while still doing business – as it did about two years ago in Renfrew – would mean “our attention would be diverted.” She said the move is not about saving money. “The intent is not necessarily to save money, but to ensure continuity of service.” In recent years the health unit pulled about two-thirds of its administration services out of town, prompting many community leaders to speculate it was only a matter of time before the whole thing was taken away. The health unit provides educational awareness in the form of health professionals giving presentations at schools; it offers clinics at schools and elsewhere; public health nurses offer communicable disease follow-ups and immunization services. All services will continue, though

Left, Ventia Crawford played Marguerite Charlebois, the Pontiac’s first settler in 1786. She dances to a tune played by fiddler Paulette Gauthier as the Haughton’s bunkhouse scow lands at Red Pine Bay.

Four events for McNab Days Ken Durrant of Norway Bay, who guided the W.D. Stalker across the river, said the steam Alligator tug boat “worked like a charm … it was a marvellous trip.” Pilot Cheri Emerson of Simcoe said the voyage was by far the longest they had made on the Alligator boat. “We usually go 600 yards (on the Lynn River),” she said. Fortunately, the crew had stocked up on wood before leaving the Quebec side and had enough to power it back at the festival’s end. The W.D. Stalker towed Peter and Barb Haughton’s bunkhouse scow across the river, complete with a fiddler and dancer to add to the atmosphere. Among the other craft taking part were one of Dr. Bill Burwell’s steam boats, two voyageur canoes, two kayaks and several other boats, including one that sold seats to raise money for diabetes. The Prior Chestnuts put on a demonstration as the crowed waited for the flotilla. The Burnstown WI’s celebration included a humorous re-enactment skit by Marlene Schaly and Lillian Trask, entertaining talks on the principles and history of the WI by Eileen Brydges and Irene Robillard, and stories about the joys of memories by Mary Cook. Continued from front Sharing the grounds were the Renfrew County paramedics with their Sunday Stretch McHealthy rural living festival. While the events didn’t attract as many people as anticipated (the Scottish Festival was hoping for double the 400 who turned out), McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell is pleased McNab Days is growing. It certainly put the township in the spotlight for a few days and was a celebration of the township’s heritage, culture and rural lifestyle, she noted. The Riverdriver Festival, which attracted a large number of interested people despite the rain, was both a strong reminder of the area’s forestry and boating heritage as well as a symbolic joint effort by organizers from both Ontario and Quebec. “It was great to work so closely with Quebec side on this,” said Heather Lang of the festival organizing committee. “After all, we share the same heritage … the same river.” This year’s response to the festival, in its third year, “is something we can build on,” she said. Renfrew County Warden Bob Sweet showed his support by travelling in the lead boat with Campbell and Bristol Mayor Brent Orr and Coun. Steve Forbes.

The Arnprior Waste Disposal Site (Landfill) will be CLOSED Canada Day - Friday, July 1, 2011. Prior to Entering the Waste Disposal Site • Please purchase a landfill pass at the Town Hall or Nick Smith Centre. • Please ensure that the vehicle load is properly secured and/or covered with a tarp to prevent littering along the roads. • Please continue to divert waste by separating waste into their respective streams.

Waste Management Facts from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) • Canadians generate more waste per capita than anyone else in the developed world, based on a report from the Conference Board of Canada. • People who generate less waste tend to pay for their neighbour’s garbage through property taxes. • More complex wastes, such as plastics, solvents, and electronics, drive-up property taxes and are harder to dispose of safely. • Since 1989, Ontario has filled up 649 of its 730 landfills. With only 81 landfills left, we must choose to reduce waste and recycle more, or create more landfills in our communities. • The cost of cleaning up environmental damage is far greater for taxpayers than preventing pollution in the first place.

Health unit should make effort to stay

Letters

Let’s keep celebrating To the editor: How fortunate we are in Renfrew County to have hosted two important events: The Renfrew County Plowing Match in September 1994 at Pembroke, and more recently the County Expo 150 at the Petawawa Airport in June 2011, to celebrate 150 years of county heritage. Fred Blackstein was the chairperson of both events and, along with the hundreds of volunteers, each was very successful with many thousands in attendance. With Janet Carlile (museum curator) and Glenn Arthur (recreation director), our town was well represented and the volunteers enjoyed the experience of the Expo 150. Arnprior will be hosting its own event in 2012 to celebrate 150 years of our town’s heritage. We should all be proud to get involved in the various functions of celebration.

T

he Renfrew County and District Health Unit must vacate space in Arnprior District Memorial Hospital (ADMH) on or before Aug. 1. But that doesn’t mean it has to leave town by the same date. The health unit was told on May 17, through a letter and phone call from ADMH, that its monthto-month lease was not going to be renewed. The hospital needs the space for the new family health team. Why didn’t they notify stakeholders such as councillors at the Town of Arnprior and Renfrew County council at that time? Even well before that, the health unit should have seen the writing on the wall and started to plan for finding new office space in town. It seems a little disingenuous for the health unit to say the May 17 news came as “a surprise.” ADMH CEO Eric Hanna, on Aug. 31, 2010, proudly announced that Arnprior was approved for a family health team. We understand if the health unit didn’t read our story about the announcement. But to not get wind of the CEO making the announcement? And to not put two and two together? That is difficult to swallow. The health unit went to great pains in finding a new office when they needed a new location in Renfrew about three years ago. They had three different offices in just over a year before settling in for good. They understood the importance of maintaining a full-time presence in Renfrew, and did what it took to make that happen. Now health unit spokesperson Catherine Bloskie says the priority is “continuity of service.” Why is Arnprior not treated the same as Renfrew? Community leaders have long suspected the health unit wanted to pull out of town. It scaled back half its operation a couple of years ago. Red flags went up recently for Mayor David Reid when water testing was moved to McNab-Braeside. But he accepted that because the town is on municipal water and the residents of the township are on wells; having the tests done there made sense. However, now it is up to Reid, Reeve Walter Stack and others – MPP John Yakabuski is up for re-election this fall – to pressure the health unit for a clear and convincing reason why it can’t move into any number of vacant office spaces in Arnprior. Reid is right when he indicated that reasonable explanations must be accepted. But when the health unit offers no correspondence whatsoever, he is also right to call it “unacceptable.”

Thanks to all who walked To the editor: A big thank you from the Arnprior & District Humane Society for making our June 12 ‘Walk in the Park’ walk-a-thon fundraiser a success. We raised $9,500 for our no-kill animal shelter. Thank you to our volunteers who helped with registration, checkpoints, signage, cooking and prizes. Thanks to our many generous and caring business sponsors who are identified on our website www.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca, Peter DeWolf with myFM radio for a super job and, of course, a huge thank you to all the walkers. We had a perfect weather day for our event in Robert Simpson Park. Once again the Spirit of ’69 band entertained, Sparky the Fire Dog joined us and faces were painted by Shannon Ambrose. We all had fun seeing all the different dog breeds, winning prizes, enjoying the tasty barbecue and, best of all, helping to raise funds for a great cause. Congratulations to the three ‘Top Dog’ winners who raised the most pledges, Diane Winsor, Sheila Spalding, and Donna and Keith Gardner. And the 3 ‘Top Pup’ (under 14-year-old category) winners, Adrienne Cavers, Kate Babineau and Malachy Hutchinson. In 2012 we hope to see lots of new walkers join our loyal, current participants for an even bigger and better event. As with all our fundraising events and membership drives, these much-needed funds are critical to keep your local animal shelter operating. Our heartfelt thanks.

McNab-Braeside’s proposed new noise bylaw would tighten up enforcement regarding timing, but is not likely to delve into the area of adverse effects. Township council had its first look at the revised draft bylaw June 21. Saying it was a “very difficult issue,” Mayor Mary Campbell praised CAO Noreen Mellema for coming up with “a work of art.” The proposed bylaw is available on the township’s website or at the municipal office. Council members and the public are being given to July 8 to provide input to the CAO. Council will then be given the ‘tweaked’ bylaw to discuss before giving final approval. Mellema said legal advice indicates it would be difficult and costly to enforce regulations revolving around noise caus-

ing adverse effects, so that has been withdrawn from the bylaw. Campbell agreed it would be difficult to measure how noise adversely affects enjoyment of property. It’s an issue that should be up to the province to tackle, she added. She noted McNab Public School students had asked for a bylaw that would allow them to be able to sleep after 9 p.m. Coun. Aldene Styles said she liked the focus on prohibiting certain noises during specific hours and on Sundays and holidays, as it makes it clear if someone is in contravention of the bylaw. Deputy Mayor Christine Blimkie asked if the OPP would be enforcing the bylaw. Mellema explained they respond to reports of noisy parties and the like, but it is usually more cost effective to have the township’s bylaw enforcement officer attend to noise bylaw complaints.

Township presses for Division work DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The township of McNab-Braeside, in response to complaints from residents, sent a letter to the County of Renfrew asking it to reconstruct a crumbling Division Street sooner than planned.

McNab-Braeside is also looking for Arnprior’s support for the cause to nail down a definite timeline for the work to take place, though 2015 is a year Mayor Mary Campbell was told. Reeve Walter Stack, who represents the town at Renfrew County coun-

cil meetings, said the county planned on doing it in 2013 but removed it from the budget when the previous council suggested there could be issues around lines on Moore Street. He said the county will get to it when it has the money.

Please find me a home Each week we feature animals from the Arnprior and District Humane Society that are up for adoption. #4048 Benji Can you give this sweet dog a wonderful new home? Mail delivery returns The mail is back. Canada Post resumed operations Tuesday following the passage of Bill C6, forcing the corporation and its lockedout workers back to work. Mail was delivered Tuesday in Carleton Place and Almonte and around the country. However, Canada Post cautioned it will take some time for operations to return to normal. “We thank Canadians for the patience they have shown throughout this labour disruption and are asking for continued patience as we restore our

The back-to-work bill is “unjust and punitive” and an attack on the collective bargaining process, it said in a release. The federal government introduced the bill, arguing the economy was threatened by the dispute. The NDP maintained that the two sides should be left to settle the impasse, and held up the bill for 58 hours.

River Road drivers beware. The Sand Point stretch might be designated as a pilot project in the war against speeders. McNab-Braeside council has agreed to support a Renfrew County proposal to use whistling strips or grooves in the road to deter speeders in the area. It will also ask police to keep an eye on the Sand Point area after resident Mike Cleary came to council June 21 to complain about speeding on River Road. Cleary warned someone is going to be killed crossing River Road in the busy Sand Point or Braeside areas because of the speed of the traffic. “It’s time something is done,” he said. “We’re constantly looking over our shoulders.” Cleary said he has also taken his concerns to the County and Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant. Mayor Mary Campbell, who noted speeding is a problem in several areas of the township, agreed that River Road is particularly dangerous. “Everyone needs to slow down,” she said.

A recent speed board check in the Sand Point area indicated 75 per cent of drivers there were going at least 20 km-h over the speed limit, she said. One driver was clocked at 141 km-h, said Cleary. Coun. Brad McIlquham said the problem was noted at the last Community Policing Advisory Committee. “They (police) are well aware of the problems and the complaints,” he said, adding enforcement in the area will be increased. The statistics from the speed board back up Cleary’s comments and give police justification for targeting the area, McIlquham said. Campbell cautioned it could become expensive for the township if it requested too much enforcement. She suggested more signage is needed on both sides of Sand Point and Braeside to give drivers better warning they are entering a reduced speed zone Deputy Mayor Christine Blimkie wondered if there is a danger the grooves might make drivers lose control. Cleary said that’s not likely, but it is why the County and police are steering away from proposing speed bumps for the road.

TOWN OF ARNPRIOR NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Application for Consent

File No. B3/11

IN THE MATTER of Section 53, Chapter P.13 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990; and IN THE MATTER of an application for consent by 2163142 Ontario Ltd. and Claro Properties and Financial Services Inc. (Tony Saikley), property owner, with respect to the following: Location of Property: 8 Elgin Street, Arnprior, Part Lot 16 and 18, Plan 7

Purpose and Effect of Consent Application:

The purpose of the application is to sever part of Lots 16 and 18, Plan 7, being 8 Elgin Street West from the lands known as 10 Elgin Street West to create two separate Mixed Use Commercial lots. There is currently a two-storey mixed use commercial structure on the property. The application for severance proposes to sever an area of 439.5 square metres with a frontage of 7.62 metres on Elgin Street and a lot depth of 45.72 metres. The retained portion will have an area of 472.5 square metres and frontage of 7.62 metres on Elgin Street, with a depth of 45.72 metres. The effect of the proposed severance is the division of the existing property to create two separate mixed use commercial lots. The applicant has applied for a concurrent severance to separate 10 Elgin Street from 8 Elgin Street (application B4/11).

Speak out against elder abuse, urge OPP

TAKE NOTICE THAT the consent application will be heard by the Committee of Adjustment for the Town of Arnprior on Tuesday July 19th, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. The hearing will be held at the Council Chambers, Arnprior Town Hall, 105 Elgin Street West, Arnprior, ON.

If you know anyone exhibiting these signs, or suspect a case of elder abuse, please help protect them by seeking assistance for them, urge police. “Everyone in the community has a role to play in preventing crimes. Seniors should feel empowered to speak to those in the community equipped

A key plan is attached. Application B3/11, concurrent application B4/11 and additional related information are available in the Planning office for inspection during regular office hours.

The Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police are reminding everyone that preventing abuse is everyone’s business. June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, and educating people on the most common abuses in the community can help reduce the victimization. When it comes to the aging population, the three most common types of abuse are financial, physical and verbal. Financial abuse is by far the most common as seniors are targeted by fraudsters, as well as by caregivers, and

to assist them, including the police, physicians, bank officials, members of the clergy and family members or caregivers.” The OPP encourage everyone to be vigilant in protecting seniors, who may be more vulnerable to abuse due to their trusting nature and being viewed as weaker. To report a case of suspected abuse, call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or call Crime Stoppers. For more information on seniors’ abuse visit the OPP website at www.opp. ca.

THREE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Purpose and Effect of Consent Application:

No one was injured in a three-vehicle accident along Daniel Street near William Street on Tuesday, June 28. Traffic was backed up on both sides while emergency crews hauled away a white van, black Chevrolet, and a red Pontiac Grand Am in front of an art studio at about 5 p.m. Sgt. Gary Dougherty said the van driver is charged with failure to yield. Alcohol was not a factor. Photo by Derek Dunn

Arnprior angler arrested An Arnprior man has been charged with what Renfrew OPP are calling a serious assault at a fishing hole in Greater Madawaska. On Sunday, June 19 in the early evening, OPP officers responded to a fracas at a fishing spot on Limestone Lake Road. They were told that when the 52-year-old male victim arrived with another man he fired several shots from a rifle into the water. This upset the Arnprior man nearby who yelled at them and then left. He returned later and began arguing with the men. The suspect then picked up a rock and struck the victim in the head, allege police.

He is also charged with damaging the victim’s fishing gear and vehicle. A 27-year-old Arnprior man was arrested and charged with assault casing bodily harm and mischief under $5,000. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew July 27, and an undertaking with conditions. The investigation is continuing and police say further charges are pending. OPP Constable Tina Hunt is investigating. VANDALISM IN BRAESIDE The throwing of lawn furniture into a pool overnight on Centre Street in Braeside is one of several vandalism cases being in-

vestigated by Renfrew OPP. in McNab/Braeside. Other acts of mischief include the removal of awn ornaments and the setting of a small fire. OPP urge citizens to report suspicious activity by calling them 1-888-310-1122. Parents are also urged to speak to their children about the destructive consequences of minor acts of mischief. “What may seem like harmless fun moving lawn ornaments can be quite upsetting when the victim is a senior citizen. In addition to the mischief, the suspects are often trespassing at night which is a serious criminal offence,” say police.

aren’t being met. The biggest election issue, says Dougherty, is the harmonized services tax (HST) on hydro bills. “That’s a big one,” he says, noting Horwath has promised to remove HST from electrical and heating bills if the NDP is elected. He also notes the PCs “flip-flopped” on the matter be-

The New Democratic Party has just 10 MPPs at Queen’s Park, compared to 70 Liberals and 25 Progressive Conservatives. But Brian Dougherty of Arnprior suspects that’s about to change. “It’s not the third party now. It’s the party everyone’s talking about, especially because of Jack,” says Dougherty. He refers, of course, to Jack Layton, leader of the federal NDP, now the Official Opposition, with the NDP’s most successful federal showing ever this past spring. Provincial New Democratic Party members also have a bigger skip in their step, suggests Dougherty, who was acclaimed the NDP Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke candidate for the Oct. 6, election during a June 22 nomination meeting at the Renfrew Recreation Centre. Not only does the party have a new provincial leader in Andrea Horwath, but Dougherty says the party has strong MPPs in both urban and rural Ontario. Dougherty’s neighbour, Eric Burton, was a strong third in the last federal election, when the NDP unexpectedly bumped the Liberals to fourth among five candidates. Burton will serve as Dougherty’s campaign manager. Dougherty, 33, was acclaimed after his nomination was made by Burton and seconded by three-time federal NDP candidate Sue McSheffrey of Renfrew.

Eric Burton congratulates Brian Dougherty (right) on being acclaimed as the New Democractic Party’s Renfrew-NipissingPembroke candidate for the Oct. 6 provincial election. Burton, who was a third in this year’s federal election, will serve as Dougherty’s campaign manager. This isn’t Dougherty’s first foray into politics. As a college student in Timmins, he was part of the office staff for MPP Gilles Bisson of the NDP a few years ago. Dougherty’s wife, Kimberly, is also an active NDP supporter. They have two girls, Samantha, 7, and Sydney, 3. Perhaps because the Liberals are in power, Dougherty says Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke is a riding whose meets

A year of fun, growth with Who is Nobody? at St. Joseph’s SHERRY HAAIMA

Sabrina Hunt’s Grade 78 St. Joseph’s Catholic School class joins Arnprior Rotary Club representatives Joyce and Terry Dawson when the couple met with the class to see how the Rotary-sponsored ‘Who is Nobody’ project turned out.

Sherry.haaima@metroland.com

When Sabrina Hunt’s St. Joseph’s Catholic School Grade 7-8 students saw the nondescript case brought into the classroom last fall, they had no idea what could be inside. “From that moment they were all out of their desks trying to see what was in it,” says principal Mary-Lise Rowat. Little did they know the box contained tools for a project that would last the whole year and help them grow and learn about themselves and the community. Who is Nobody? is a literacybased project gaining popularity with elementary students of all ages. It’s the first time the program has been undertaken at St. Joe’s and it was a definite success, Keaton Beale in action before he handily won the says Rowat. The project involves cookie contest. a blank denim doll that students decorate based on projects within their school or community. The program encourages youth to bring about social change in their community and the greater world by donating their time, bringing about awareness or offering to collect materials for an organization. With many requests for fundraising going home to parents already over the school year, officials tried to focus on projects that were not necessarily moneybased. “We tried to really think about awareness and community building,” says Rowat. “We talked about what we could do to make the world a better place.” The students came up with some amazing initiatives, says Rowat, including a guest a speaker who discussed organ donation and a ‘Movember’ project where The completed Nobody doll. paper moustaches were donned and sold in support of cancer research. The culmination of a year of good works was a presentation last week to Terry and Joyce Dawson of the Arnprior Rotary Club, which sponsored the program. Students showed off the doll and a special scrapbook outlining the year’s projects. Following the presentation it was time for one last special event – a Minute to Win It competition to raise funds for chosen organization Free the Children. The school and students are very grateful to the Rotary club.

KIDS GATHER FOR FIRST COMMUNION

It was a large group that came together for their first communion at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church on May 28. Many of the kids attend nearby St. Joseph’s Catholic School and participated days beforehand in a rehearsal on how to receive the wafer. Father John Burchat told them at the time it tastes rather bland, like an ice cream cone. The spiritual component is more like ice cream, he added.

Rerun telethon collects another $425 for Care Coach Every little bit helps, but the Arnprior and area Care Coach needs more than a bit if it is to retain its service at present levels. Local residents donated another $425 for the local Para Transit Service during the re-running of the Dare to Care telethon June 19. The contributions, while appreciated, don’t make much of a dent in the service’s $12,000 shortfall. Rising fuel and maintenance costs and an increasing demand (more than 200 calls a month) are putting greater financial pressure on the

service. If no more money is forthcoming, officials from the ArnpriorBraeside-McNab Seniors At Home Program, which operates the Care Coach, will meet later this summer to discuss reducing service in the last few months of the operational year (April to March). “We don’t want to rush into something, but we have to be realistic,” said Seniors at Home executive director Dennis Harrington. If the coach service continues to be offered weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5

p.m., the money will run out before year’s end, he explained. “We may have to cut back to two or three days a week,” he added. The service relies on public donations, which are welcome at any time at the Seniors at Home office at 106 McGonigal St. (613-623-7981) or through the website www.cssagency.ca. Harrington is also optimistic the service will eventually receive a share of the provincial gas tax provided to Arnprior and McNab-Braeside, perhaps as early as next year.

Upcoming events include the third round of qualifying for the MyFM team July 8. The second round for the O’Brien Cup and the third round for the Mulvihill Cup teams are July 9. Also coming up is the Special Olympics Golf tournament on July 8.

Kids muskie tournament to be held in final weekend of free fishing week (July 2-10) Nine days of licence-free fishing in Ontario runs from July 2 to 10. That’s good news for the Valley Muskie Club as it continues its efforts to promote the sport in the area. A Kids Fishing Day planned for Sunday, July 10 follows the successful annual Ice Breaker tournament, ensuring plenty of opportunities to fish muskie in Arnprior. Doug Shannon pulled in the largest muskie, 47 inches, at the Ottawa Valley Muskie Club’s spring competition. He won $475 for the effort. Fifteen fish were caught during the tournament with 38 participants. Another $475 will go to the Capital City Condors, a hockey club for those with special needs. The club also gave out $1,000 in equipment.

During the July 10 Kids Fishing Day, pros such as Bill Craig will bring kids out on the Ottawa River, let them use top-of-the-line equipment, and help them track the ‘fish of a thousand casts’. Registration is full, but last-minute openings could happen. To find out more, contact Craig at 613-622-0673. The event is on the last day of the annual licence-free wishing week in Ontario (it begins at 12:01 a.m. this Saturday and runs to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 10)/ Ontario Family Fishing vents make it easy to try fishing in Ontario waters for the first time (or the first time in a long time). Twice a year, the government of Ontario designates several days during which Canadian residents can fish license-free in any

water body where fishing is allowed. Participants fish under the Conservation fishing license limits, which are set out in the current Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary. With the exception of the licensing requirement, Ontario fishing regulations, fees and limits continue to apply during free-fishing days. Copies of the regulations are posted on the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources website, and are available in print at ServiceOntario centres and other fishing license issuers, and a variety of other outlets. During the non-licence-free fishing times, most Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase an OUTDOORS card and a fishing license to legally fish in Ontario.

CFL player shares training tips with ADHS players Calgary Stampeder Justin Phillips is back in training camp after spending the summer working with youth in Arnprior. “It’s great to be back in training camp again and getting ready for a new season,” he says. During the previous off-season, he worked in real estate in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area. However, this off-season he moved back to the Ottawa area by locating in Arnprior. “Once I get more well known in the town, I can probably get back into real estate next off-season,” he says. In the meantime, he did a training work at a football sports camp run by Doug Cavanagh’s Kenwood Athletic Centre for a group of high school students in Arnprior. Their team qualifed for the Ontario high school championship, so the kids were all pumped, he notes. “There was tons of them in a gym and the gym owner approached me and asked me if I’d run a football camp for them. I had 13 kids and I taught them how to train properly for football and they all loved it.” He trained with them three days a week, two days lifting and one day speed and agility. The students achieved some “awesome results,” so it was really rewarding, he says. “It was definitely a fun off-season, but I’m definitely glad to be back. I was starting to get pretty

They could be in place for up to three or four years; the developer installs them early on to attract buyers. Then time, the elements, and wear and tear take their toll. RIVERVIEW DRIVE Agreeing on the repaving of Riverview Drive proved a much easier task. Karson Konstruction of Carp won the bid for $97,000, excluding HST. The town budgeted $168,000 for the project from Third to McLean avenues. Five companies put in bids, with Karson’s coming in lowest. The highest bid was from Greenwood Paving of Pembroke at $162,130. Karson has done work on Russell and Allan drives, and Edward Street in recent years and is “very reputable” according to town staffer John Steckly. TIERNEY STREET Tierney Street residents could gain a new road surface, water and sewer pipes, and lose a sidewalk, but likely not until next summer. Council budgeted $478,000 to repave the street from William Street to the dead end at John XXIII Separate School. Because it is one of Arnprior’s narrowest streets, staff recommended doing away with the sidewalk to the east while replacing the one on the west. Staff based its sidewalk decision in part on a survey sent to homeowners. Mayor David Reid let it be known that sidewalk replacement should have to do with maintaining a link with nearby sidewalks, taking advantage of sun melting snow, and other considerations; not on a poll, but a policy. Still, the west sidewalk will stay. The need to replace the sewer pipe from William

Street to the dead end and the watermain from Mary Street to the dead end, came as a bit of a $535,000 surprise. Staff sent a camera along the pipes four years ago and determined they could remain while the road is resurfaced. However, this year another camera examination revealed partial blockages. They are not of immediate concern, according to civil engineering technologist John Steckly, but it makes more financial sense to replace pipes when roads are already ripped up. The bigger blockage has to do with the provincial Ministry of Environment’s insistence on a certificate of approval. Because the pipes are so old, built in 1911, there is no paperwork. The town may have to postpone the project until next summer.

“We’ve budgeted money to get a street done, I’d like to see a street done,” Coun. Dan Lynch said. “Let’s move to Landrigan (Street) if need be.” The consensus was that Landrigan Street, with many school buses travelling along it, will also have damaged pipes just as old; a certificate of approval will likely be needed there, too. Mayor David Reid noted this is a very good year for pricing work, now federal stimulus work is over, but that if shovels aren’t in the ground by September, residents will have to wait until next spring. Steckly hopes to have a tender in place “in the fall.” Reeve Walter Stack suggested staff contact Bell Canada and Ontario Hydro to discuss removing the old poles along both streets and burying the lines. 474169

Continued from front The idea brainstormed aloud by Reeve Walter Stack, which is a combination tar-and-chip and 200 metres of asphalting near White Lake Road, would cost about $248,000. Staff told council a $166,000 fund exists from the time of annexation to pay for such infrastructure work. Coun. Dan Lynch said tar-and-chip roads need heavy traffic to remain solid. Most residents of the sparsely populated Van Dusen Drive live near the dead end portion. Mayor David Reid said learning about the Vanjumar Drive Area Reserve Fund changed his opinion from paving the first 200 metres to paving it all. He drove the road, called it “structurally sound,” noted post-stimulus pricing this year means more companies have time to do work, and said it should be tendered now. “Price it all,” he said. Staff recommended resurfacing the road, and offered several options, but also suggested council consider delaying the work until next summer. A few councillors noted the staff report was “confusing” and rejected the initial recommendation to do the work for $63,200. Council opted to tender the project immediately.

Arnprior student Katharina Prince has been awarded a major fellowship. While most university and college graduates hang up their caps and gowns after graduation, Prince and two other young professionals have chosen to stay on and dedicate their careers to the field of educational advancement. Prince, Murphy Cham-

pagne (Cambrian College) and Wahida Lakhani (St. Lawrence College) were each awarded $25,000 TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Fellowships last week during an Awards Gala during the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) annual conference. The Fellowship recipients were recognized for their strong leadership

skills and valuable work in educational advancement. They will be paired with a host school for a yearlong Fellowship, working hands-on in at least three areas of advancement including alumni relations, fundraising, and development, communications, and student recruitment. “Strong schools produce strong leaders,” said Jean R. Lachance, chairman,

Affinity Market Group, TD Insurance Meloche Monnex. “We’re thrilled to champion and reward educational excellence by giving these Fellows the opportunity to jumpstart their careers. All of the recipients are an excellent representation of the next generation of leading educational advancement professionals.” Nominated by their re-

spective schools, the 2011 Fellowship recipients are young professionals working in the field of educational advancement. The Fellowship gives them the opportunity to gain practical training and experience at the school. “The TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Fellowships infuse new talent into our ranks, and provide a meaningful year of diverse work experience in advancement,” said CCAE president Mary Williams.

Love Mom, Dad, Cassie, Geoff We Miss you Jarett. & Family Love Samantha, Rodney, Braxton and Bryn DORZEK, Jarett In memory of Jarett Dorzek who passed SONNENBURG In loving memory of our away July 2, 2010. cherished Nephew/cousin “Ty” who “Thy will be done” is was tragically taken hard to say, from us July 2, 2002. When one we loved has passed away, Our thoughts of you Some day, perhaps, Never go away, we’ll understand, You walk beside us When we meet in that Every day, better land. Your memories are locked in, Just a Friend Our hearts forever to stay. Love you Bud xoxox

Bruce H. Madore October 3, 1976 – June 12, 2011 After Bruce and family were given the shocking news, that his weak heart was running out of time, with the help of Clancy’s, Dr. Becker, Homecare, Care Coach for transportation, his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Bruce was able to enjoy a year and a half longer with his loved ones. DORZEK In loving memory of a dear son, Jarett who passed away July 2, 2010.

Many thanks to those we may have missed in comforting our dear son and brother. Your honesty, smiles and care meant a lot to Bruce. We miss you and love you always, Bruce.

A sadness still comes over us, Tears in silence often flow, Memory keeps you ever near us, Though you died one year ago. Loving you is easy, We do it every day, Missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. A part of our heart he took with him, But his love he left us to keep, So we will never really be parted, The bond between us is too deep. No farewell words were spoken, No time to say goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God can tell us why. It broke our heart to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Our heart still aches in sadness, Our silent tears still flow, For what it meant to lose you, Jarett, No one will ever know. If we could have one lifetime wish, One dream that could come true, We’d ask with all our hearts, For yesterday and you. Love Mom and Dad
