It’s May and I have to say there’s a spring in my step. This has something to do with the fact that we already have over 2,000 likes on our facebook page, www.facebook.com/AroundDB. And that the website, www.arounddb.com is booming. But there’s more to it than that. I simply love springtime in Lantau. Our island comes into its own in the warmer, fresher weather, and there’s just so much to do! There’s hiking, trail running, and local races to watch or compete in (don’t miss the last leg of the Bonaqua MHW Action series that starts and finishes in DB Plaza on May 5). And then of course there’s fishing. Not everyone’s sport of choice, it’s true! But I challenge you to read this month’s action feature, in which two Mui Wo teens talk of their angling ‘addiction’, without getting hooked.

Of course I’m also looking forward to Mother’s Day on May 12. This is when our kids get to treat us, and we in turn celebrate how much we love them… and would do anything to protect them. This issue then, we have a special feature focused on bullying – and how best to combat it. It seems protectively paternal (or maternal) is not the only way to go, local students are being encouraged to preempt bullying in the first instance and talk it out when it occurs. There’s so much to discuss this month! And I look forward to meeting up with you online at www.arounddb.com.

To celebrate the end of the mini’s rugby season, the DB Pirates Rugby Football Club (DBPRFC) hosted its annual Awards Day at Discovery College on April 14. All the young players were commended, and trophies given out for Player of the Year, Pirate of the Year and Most Improved Player. The barbecue went down a treat, and the kids got the chance to throw wet sponges at their friends and coaches – that never gets old! DMR celebrates Mega ice-hockey

30 years

DMR School of Ballet’s end of year performance is being held at Auberge Discovery Bay Hong Kong on the afternoon of June 8. Students will showcase what they have learned over the year in a special show – Tap Shoes & Tutus Too. Tickets are available from DMR and include a champagne reception and sitdown afternoon tea. The Mega Ice Hockey 5’s Tournament (MI5) takes place May 6 to 11 (adults) and from April 29 to May 4 (juniors) at Mega Ice, MegaBox, Kowloon. This year 54 junior teams are playing in the tournament, and the DBees have entered two teams: one in the U10 (Atom AA) division and one in the U12 (PW) division. Both teams did well in the City League so expectations are high. A special mention goes to Francesca Lavarone who is playing in the adult division as goal keeper for the first time this year - she is 13 years old!

Set at the time of the handover, it centres on the trials, tribulations and triumphs of a gweillo rock ‘n' roll singer and his Chinese wife. Island Dance’s Melissa Thornton has been closely involved with the musical for the past three years, and it was written by former Hong Kong Football Rugby Union executive director Allan Payne. 20 years of

island dancing

With 20 Years of Dance, Island Dance’s end of year show, the pupils are celebrating just that. Songs will be arranged chronographically starting from 1993, when the school opened, and culminating in 2013. Island Dance is also going down memory lane with a virtual book of video and photo memories of the last two decades on stage. In addition to the performance, prizes will be awarded to top students, and there’ll be a lucky draw with prizes donated by the likes of Star Cruises, Eclipse Management and Uncle Russ. Owned by a group of DB residents, and manned by a team of highly qualified local instructors, Spin Works is providing residents with a cool new way to get fit. Spinning is a group exercise performed on stationary bikes to music in a studio. Sessions are highly motivational, allowing each participant to work to their own fitness level, and burn up to 800 calories in 50 minutes. Local DB resident Inez Maubane Jones, a writer of some 15 years, has just published her first children’s book, The Contest. A mother of two, Inez wanted to write a thrilling and humorous book with an enduring moral message. In the story, three main characters (a pig, a spider and a fox) enter a contest and learn a lot through trying to win a secret prize. Auskick is a relatively new addition to the activities on offer for kids in Discovery Bay. No experience is required as Auskick is not just about football but also about having fun, keeping fit and socialising with other children, and it’s very much a familyoriented sport. All coaches are specially qualified and kids learn the basic skills of kicking, handballing and marking, with a curriculum-based session for the first hour. The rest of the time they play a modified rules game. By age 13, depending on their ability, most children are playing full rules/ contact games. The season runs from May 5 to August 24, with training on Saturdays from 9-11am at Siena Park. Parents are encouraged to come down and even join in! Kiwis having a ball The ANZ Bank Kiwi Ball is the premier annual event for anyone with a connection to New Zealand – be it heart, mind, body or soul. The party at the Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) Happy Valley on June 14 is being coorganised by South Lantau resident Roimata Harmon of ORA Events. It’s a celebration of Kiwi food, drink, music and culture with a performance by Te Hokioi Ki Whanga Kakara, Hong Kong’s own Maori cultural group. Hot local band 9th State is also set to perform. There’ll be a silent auction and prize draw to raise funds for KidsCan, a charity which supports disadvantaged New Zealand children. To purchase tickets, visit www.ora-events.hk.

On April 21, DB resident Tracey Read, founder of the eco non-profit Plastic Free Seas, joined forces with Lantaubased photographer Liina Klauss to hold a beach cleanup in Tong Fuk. Some 75 volunteers helped to sort the trash by colour and use it to create a beautiful art installation – a rainbow across the beach. To mark the 43rd Earth Day, April 22, Liina posted her photos on the internet, highlighting the plight as well as the beauty of our beaches. Speaking out against plastic pollution

Merrin Pearse makes the case for more sustainability in Hong Kong with the people most likely to affect change – the ones with the cash. Elizabeth Kerr hears all about it at his South Lantau home

H

opefully, one day, Dr Merrin Pearse will be to Hong Kong sustainability what Neil deGrasse Tyson is to American astrophysics. Neil makes black holes sound cool and better yet he knows how to explain them in ways that are accessible to nonscientific minds. Merrin is kind of like that.

on the environment. By 2007, related businesses operating in Hong Kong created a need for someone to open a C4u office here. Merrin and Louise decided they’d be the ones to give the SAR a go. Not surprisingly they have chosen to base themselves in relatively rural South Lantau.

Telling it like it is Born and raised on a dairy farm in Edgecumbe (population 1,800), on New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, Merrin’s road to Hong Kong started when a devastating 1987 earthquake rocked his little hometown. “That got me interested in land. The corner of our farm dropped 2.05 metres, and I wanted to know how they measured that,” he recalls. Previously toying with a career in economics he’s still in it in a roundabout way, as a sustainability consultant with his own firm, Coordinate4u (C4u), founded in New Zealand in 2004. Merrin and his wife, cartographer Louise Taylor, provide expertise to corporations and individuals on how to work and live in a way that will reduce their negative impact

Though a chat with Merrin makes his easy-going Kiwi nature obvious, don’t ask him his opinion: you’re likely to get it. Should Hong Kong be aggressively legislating more compulsory sustainability laws? “The time for legislation? About 10 or 15 years ago.” Oh. So those voluntary guidelines for light pollution? “That’s going to go nowhere unless it’s legislated.” I see. And government flexibility? “It’s a very standard, Hong Kong Government ‘tick this box’ approach.” Well. Merrin and Louise’s reasons for remaining in Hong Kong stem partly from the government’s “ineptitude regarding sustainability issues” but also from the interconnectedness

of the world. With so much of what’s at home in New Zealand made in China factories, how things are manufactured there has meaning. Arguing sustainable manufacturing and ecological conscientiousness from thousands of kilometres away made no sense.

air? That’s the frustration; that whole disconnect from nature here. There’s signs saying stay away, pesticide, don’t walk on the grass,� he says. “You can’t hug a tree.�

On top of his role as boss at C4u, Merrin is employed by environmental protection organisation Friends of the Earth, as a project manager assisting companies looking for a way to do more. He also gives time to the Living Islands Movement, helping promote sensitive and sustainable development of Hong Kong’s islands. Then there’s Green Drinks HK – a more erudite, less drunken version of a bar fight over recycling. In Merrin’s words, “It’s an hour to learn and discuss with interesting speakers� subjects such as corporate social responsibility, human rights and of course, sustainability.

Six years on, Merrin still has work to do. “Air pollution and [marine] water quality aside, we’re of the idea to be here for many years to come,� he states. And Merrin is quick to point out that contrary to popular belief, New Zealand isn’t some kind of green utopia; the current environmental policy is “small-scale and laid-back� and even its prized dairy industry has been criticised for ecological crimes. So living in South Lantau isn’t that much of a hardship.

Not surprisingly, Merrin was actively involved in dealing with the Plastic Disaster of July 2012, which saw thousands of plastic pellets washed up on our shores. Hooking up with Gary Stokes (of Hemingway’s DB, who moonlights as the Hong Kong coordinator of Sea Shepherd), Merrin focused not only on cleaning up our beaches but locating the lost containers. Getting the message across can be hard in Hong Kong – even when Merrin can prove the bottom line will get fatter with a little bit of effort. But convincing a chief-executive officer to make a small change in how a business operates and reaching even a few of the 20,000 people who work for him is clearly its own reward. That said, Merrin clearly has his bad days. “Do they just not look out the window and realise they’re contributing to what’s floating in the harbour? In the

The couple use their Mui Wo home as a kennel of sorts, taking care of animals for friends when they’re out of town. “We love animals and our focus is on that. We look after dogs when people are away,� Merrin explains. “When the dogs come from MidLevels and hit our place it’s an adventure playground. They just go mad with the freedom. It’s nothing like going to Sai Kung on a Sunday and seeing them in shoes.� Talk about unsustainable.

Three go-getting DB residents talk to Megaen Kelly about setting up a business – and making it grow

H

ong Kong is famous for its entrepreneurial attitude. So many people run their own businesses, from small (think food carts) to big (internationally known fashion houses). And then there’s everything in between. Go-getters just want the chance to share their creativity or passion with others. And of course, earn a buck or two along the way. First off, you have to have a viable concept, such as offering products or services that aren’t already being met in the community. And you need to inform yourself about the legalities – and tax implications. Then it’s all down to research, planning, brainstorming, finance, choosing a location, hiring the right people, effective marketing… Let’s see how starting a business happens, DB-style.

The start up For Matt Chambers, owner of Impact Fitness Ltd – an outdoor fitness and bespoke nutrition centre in DB – starting out in business was all about being in the right place at the right time. The 32-year-old Kiwi says, “I came to Hong Kong about eight months ago. Soon afterwards I started working at (newly formed) Impact Fitness. The (then) owner Abby De Beer asked me three months later if I would consider taking over the business.” The fact that Matt agreed says much for his belief in his experience (he was a fitness trainer in the British Army for six years) and his guts – his willingness to jump in at the deep end with a new business, in a new country. Singapore-born DB resident Kristy Yeo, a filmmaker with more than 20 years’ experience, has a different tale to tell. “In early September last year, I met Rachael Lawson at the DB Handmade Market,” she says. “She had a stall promoting her photography and filmmaking workshops in Hong Kong Island. I told her immediately that I had been thinking about

setting up a kids’ filmmaking class for a long time. I received an email from her the same night while I was drafting one to her. Our chemistry was instantaneous and I guess we both had the same thought – maybe there was an opportunity for co-operation.” Thus Junior Snappers, a company offering filmmaking workshops to children, was born. In this case, fate intervened – it was serendipity, the meeting of two like-minded people with the same passion. It was a different story again with Sue Meldrum, owner of At Home in DB, a company that has been offering introductory courses to life in Hong Kong, as well as tours around the Pearl River Delta area since early 2012. Originally from Australia, this is Sue’s second stint in Hong Kong; now age 48, she has 25 years’ worth of expat experience, gained through living in a whopping 11 different countries. “In Seoul I was president of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Korea and I saw the benefit of arriving in a strange place and receiving information through an orientation course,” she says. “At Home in DB really came out of a passion to give back.” Experience and passion are therefore the key words for Sue’s entrée into the world of business ownership.

The logistics So how do you actually go about setting up a company in Hong Kong? Kristy notes that this is a great city for any entrepreneur. “It is very easy to set up a company here,” she says. “One can contract any legal or accountancy firm that specialises in company formation and immigration. Compare quotes for company set up, these can vary from HK$10,000 to HK$25,000. One can also do it directly at the Hong Kong Company Registrar for a tiny fraction of the price. There are various types of business registrations available, such as

sole proprietorship, partnership and limited company.� “Anyone of any nationality can set up a business or partnership in Hong Kong,� Sue adds. “We used an accountant on Hong Kong Island who organised the whole process on our behalf. It was simple and relatively inexpensive (we paid about HK$2,500 for the business registration). We decided to set up a shelf company as it is a faster process. All you require is a minimum of one shareholder and one director, and the company secretary must be a Hong Kong Permanent Resident. We then went ahead and set up our business bank account. Company profits tax is payable at 16.5% for all profits made within Hong Kong.�

Moving forward Impact Fitness was in the black when Matt took over, and it remains profitable. As for expansion he says, “We are all fully qualified personal trainers and we now have certified TRX Suspension Training and ViPR instructors. We also have a nutrition specialist as part of the Impact team.� Another important change Matt has had time to implement is making the fitness packages more affordable.

Getting the word out

wo girls follow a mother into a supermarket, whispering about a schoolmate who they say doesn’t shower very much. A student threatens a classmate with a pointed object. A boy is swarmed by fellow students, as others record the mayhem on cellphones. These episodes are not from schools in Tokyo or Toronto. These are stories at our doorstep. Bullying is any aggressive act towards a person that is not random and as such, it usually occurs more than once. In schools, bullying appears in several guises: physical, verbal (such as name-calling), emotional (such as social isolation) and now online (cyber-bullying). Contrary to popular belief, particularly among older generations who may still regard it as a rite of passage, bullying has a lasting effect on victims. What’s more, mentalhealth researchers claim that bullying can be associated with a host of disorders, from depression and attention deficithyperactivity disorder to oppositional-defiant disorder and low self-esteem. It is said that the mental health of bullies

and bully-victims (those who are bullied and then ‘pass it on’), as well as children being bullied, is at risk.

Relationship management Codes of conduct for people in schools, and bullying response-policies vary greatly. For instance, West Island School has a ‘zero-tolerance policy’, Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) has a ‘zero-tolerance policy with preventive features’, and Discovery College (DC) advocates a ‘no-blame approach’ and a Restorative Practices (RP) programme. This doesn’t mean that the way bullying is dealt with in local schools can be reduced to ‘punitive versus restorative’, but some differences are apparent. At West Island School the course of action following allegations of bullying ‘will depend on the needs of the victim but may include mediation, written apologies, close monitoring, behavioural reports, conduct contracts and suspension from school’. DBIS, meanwhile, combines its zero-tolerance approach with pre-emptive measures. Its whole-school peer-mediation Cool Schools programme focuses on teaching essential life skills for peaceful conflict resolution. Ian Hunt, DBIS Primary School principal, says “We focus on positive reinforcement – catching children ‘being good’ – but making sure students understand that there will be consequences [for bullies].” And then there’s the no-blame RP programme employed at DC – a framework for engagement based on the premise that human beings are happier, and more likely to make positive changes in their behaviour when those in positions of authority do things with them (restoratively), rather than to them (punitively) or for them

(paternalistically). The RP hypothesis maintains that the punitive and authoritarian ‘to’ mode and the permissive and paternalistic ‘for’ mode are not as effective as the restorative and participatory ‘with’ mode.

DC principal Mark Beach says, “We have made a commitment to Restorative Practices and when we accept students into our school, we also make a commitment to them and their families, to do everything we can to educate them in the widest sense. In doing that, our processes must be conducted fairly, with outcomes that are not predetermined and with a focus on ‘putting things right’.”

Drama class is of course another ideal place to deal with bullying in schools; workshop activities are sometimes used to help a student see their misbehaviour through classmates’ eyes, and can also provide opportunities for victims to find their voice.

Addressing bullying The RP approach at DC focuses on the perceived needs of the wrongdoer for the benefit of the school community. Methods include face-to-face question and answer ‘circle’ sessions – with all the children concerned. A trained mediator (usually a teacher, though students may be given training so as to be able to act as student mediators) will ask a series of questions of both wrongdoer, victim and others involved, to encourage them to express their feelings. That is the ideal; often parents find that their children, once they have informed that trusted adult (whether parent or staff), don’t wish to further engage their aggressor. At secondary level in DBIS, the positive reinforcement policy includes an ongoing tutoring system in which student house

Emma Tielus-Ward, who has been leading drama workshops locally for over 15 years, recently worked with DB youth on a production that broaches the subject of bullying. “During rehearsals, we discovered that a number of the characters are psychological bullies and that this is as harmful as the physical,” says Emma. DBIS student Justin Heaton, who played a victim in the play, says, “I think that both types of bullying are equally bad, but I think that psychological bullying can be more subtle, and it can happen even when the bully mightn't notice that they have bullied. This makes it more difficult for an adult or someone to stop it!”

Rights and responsibilities If it isn’t written down, then it doesn’t exist. School-bullying policies need to be clearly stated and easily accessible to parents and students, and this includes cyber-bullying policies. Some schools state that use of the internet, text messaging f

and email systems for the purpose of bullying another student will not be tolerated. But parents should note that many schools draw the line at investigating non-school online forums, such as Skype Instant Messenger and Facebook. It is important to codify expectations among students, staff, and parents, not only for accountability and organisational alignment, but also to empower students. We know the saying, ‘with rights come responsibilities’, and while students are often reminded of their responsibilities, some schools are more successful in informing students of their rights – not in vague generalities, but with a framework of action points. Renaissance College’s Secondary School Code of Conduct, available online, promotes awareness of its students’ rights and responsibilities. These rights (for instance, ‘to be treated with respect and dignity’) are not granted by staff, nor must they be earned; these rights belong to students simply because they exist. But the code of conduct also outlines the student’s role to help ensure these entitlements are achievable in practice. Such a document, if properly treated, will promote a culture of student empowerment and help underpin a culture of respect for and amongst students, as well as nurture self-esteem. All schools have anti-bullying strategies in place, with varying degrees of transparency, consistency and success. It is important to note that there is no clear winner in terms of strategy, and the methods and rationale can span the range of liberal/ conservative ideologies. As with most issues, a multi-pronged approach with input from all stakeholders is likely to be the most effective in the long run. It is often pointed out that bullying amongst youth is tolerated in ways that would never be tolerated amongst adults. For this state-of-affairs to end, our children need to be given the means to empower themselves, and all of us grown-ups must be honest, professional and vigilant. Excuses, compromise and complacency are not an option. Our children’s futures are at stake.

he gold price has crashed, and a lot of investors are wondering about the outlook going forward, and whether one should now be buying, holding or selling the metal that does not pay interest. Likewise, the jury is out about (Russian) natural gas – will prices continue to drop or is this commodity looking like a good long-term bet? In order to answer the question best, and advise investors about timely commodity investment opportunities, let us look first at the reasons for the gold price crunch. It seems that a number of factors combined for this to happen. Firstly, apparent investor complacency about the global financial crisis or in other words the expectation by an increasing number of investors that the debt crisis is now a thing of the past. Secondly, the announcement that Hungarian-American business magnate George Soros sold gold late last year, and lastly sudden doubt emerging about

the continuity of US Quantitative Easing (QE) policies (gold is the ultimate inflation hedge and the price tends to drop when there is talk of phasing out or reducing QE policies). And throw this into the mix. It has been alleged by a number of analysts, including former secretary of the US Treasury Paul Craig Roberts, that the US Federal Reserve has been directly involved in the recent gold price ‘take-down’. The aim being to reduce investor confidence in gold as a safe haven and delay the flow from cash and bonds to gold, since a conversion of cash and bonds into gold would result in a weakening US dollar and escalating (and totally unaffordable) interest yields to be paid on treasuries.

is a thing of the past, particularly when we look at recent developments in Europe. Unemployment has reached unprecedented levels and without doubt the debt problem is getting worse in even the supposedly safe-haven countries. The latest indication of this was in February when the UK lost its AAA credit rating status, as per Moody’s Rating Agency. The agency warned that “subdued” growth prospects and a “high and rising debt burden” were weighing on the British economy, and lowered its credit rating by a notch to AA1. In Spain both debt and unemployment continue to soar, and in Italy, regardless of the present political theatre, the reality simply is that the country is hopelessly broke, no matter who is in charge. It’s inconceivable that its Euro 2-trillion sovereign debt can be served for much longer amid the severe economic contraction. It is even possible that Spain, Italy and other large European countries will soon have to engage in a bank deposit ‘haircut’ similar to and possibly much larger than that negotiated in Cyprus in late March. What happened in Cyprus simply has to be seen as a wake-up call. Looking to the US, and a possible phasing out of QE, well, it simply cannot happen – even if the US Federal Reserve would like it to. Such a policy change would result in rising treasury bond yields and therefore an escalation of the US sovereign debt problem – something the country cannot afford given its US$202 trillion unfunded liabilities burden. The US has either got to continue printing more and more money, or face the onset of a massive home-grown sovereign debt crisis.

Go for gold at bargain prices Interestingly either outcome will likely benefit the price of gold – in the long run. Gold investors should not panic and sell positions at this point. If anything they should make use of the good price to accumulate. A good number of weak hands (particularly those of Western leveraged short-term paper-gold speculators) are being forced out of precious positions via margin calls, but Asian central banks and strong-handed individuals (like Chinese physical buyers) are taking the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy large quantities of gold. Note too that as Japan moves from deflation into inflation, Japanese pensions funds, second in size only to those of the US, are also said to be considering an increase in gold positions. And those concerned about what George Soros says or (openly) does should be reminded that he called gold the “ultimate bubble” in 2010 just before buying massively into the metal for his fund. So for all we know, George may already be buying gold and taking advantage of his selfcreated gold scare, or he might even have been privately buying gold now while taking a bearish stance with his fund in public. Either way I would advise investors not to pay too much attention to his ‘noise’. Apart from gold and precious metals, plenty of other commodity investment opportunities also appear attractive at the moment, such as natural gas.

It’s a gas The Russian equity market is presently trading at historically cheap valuations of approximate Price to Earnings (P/E) ratios of 6. This represents a 50% discount to the emerging market average of 12, and many of the

leading Russian companies are operating in the energy sector with substantial exposure to natural gas. It is true that there has been much talk about shale-gas resources from the US and possibly from other countries competing with Russia’s traditional natural-gas sector stronghold. But serious doubt has emerged recently about the cost, sustainability and environmental risks of shalegas production. At the same time, natural gas demand in China, South Korea, Japan and Germany (with the latter two countries reducing or phasing out nuclear energy) is on the rise. The increased use of natural gas versus coal in China is something investors (as well as environmentalists) should pay particular attention to. Hence a further drop in global natural-gas prices may not materialise, and Russian natural gas is likely to remain a major market player, if not become a significantly more important one. Accordingly, current Russian equity valuations appear to be lower than justified. And perhaps the attention soon to be given to Russia as a host of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, followed by the 2018 FIFA World Cup, may trigger an upwards stock price reversion to more reasonable valuation levels in line with those of the rest of the world.

hat happens to children if both parents suddenly disappear? Even though this possibility is disturbing even to consider, the sad reality is that any children left behind will still need to be looked after. If parents have a trusted and reliable person in mind to take care of their children in the event of their untimely death, then they should make arrangements to appoint them as a guardian. If nothing is arranged, the situation can become complicated, and may not necessarily reflect what parents would have wanted for their children. Therefore, it’s useful to know what Hong Kong law specifies if no provision for guardianship has been made during the parents’ lives.

this may not always be suitable if the family is living apart or estranged from one another. However the situation becomes more complicated when both parents decease at the same time and even more so, if they did not make any prior arrangements for guardianship. In Hong Kong, the Court of First Instance may appoint a person to be the guardian of the child where no guardianship arrangements have been made. Of course, relatives may apply to the court to be designated as the guardian, and the court has to act in the best interests of the child, however the decision by the court could lead to discord amongst remaining family members, and may not be what the parents wished.

How is a guardian appointed? What happens if no plans are in place? First of all, if one parent dies, then the surviving parent will generally become the sole guardian of the child, although

Parents can appoint one or more guardian(s) via two different procedures. They can appoint a guardian by adding a provision in their last will and testament, or via a

fairly simple written appointment, which must be signed and attested by two witnesses. The guardian appointment can be cancelled or changed by preparing a new written and dated document that changes the previous appointment, or by writing a new will. When appointing a guardian, a parent is required to take into account the views of each child as far as is practicable with regard to the child’s age and understanding. However if a guardian is selected, it has no effect unless the person designated accepts the responsibility. This can be done ‘expressly’ by the guardian agreeing to do so, or ‘impliedly’ where their actions in relation to the child clearly indicate they have accepted the role. Alternatively the guardian may refuse the appointment. Where a guardian has been appointed by a will or written appointment, guardianship takes effect automatically if immediately prior to the parent’s death, either the appointing parent had a custody order over the child, or if the appointing parent lived with the child and the child does not have any other surviving parent or guardian. In all other cases, the person appointed must apply to the court to assume guardianship over the child. Once granted, that person has parental rights and authority with respect to the child. A further consideration is that if the designated guardian lives abroad, there may be a transition period between the death of the parents and when the guardian can come to Hong Kong.

Who takes care of the children in the transition? In the event that no temporary guardianship arrangements have been made, then the court may appoint the director of Social Welfare to be the child’s legal guardian until such time as the legal guardian can come to Hong Kong. In this case a child may be taken into care during the interim period.

However parents can appoint a temporary guardian to take care of their children until such time as the permanent legal guardian can take over. Again a temporary guardian can be specified in a will or a separate document in the same manner as appointing a permanent guardian. By considering all these points now, you will be doing all you can to ensure that in the event of your death, children left behind are cared for by people that they can trust and rely on. Remember – hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

ith education adopting 21st-century skills, schools have become 1:1 with technology, meaning almost all students carry a device with them 24/7. When online, they have access to the world but are not protected from trolls (bad people) or from accessing inappropriate content. Schools teach digital citizenship and typically use a firewall to safeguard students. But parents need to participate in the best method of protection – education. Here are some other measures to consider implementing to protect your children from the chaos of the internet.

By installing software such as RescueTime and observing an activity log, you keep the door open for mistakes which can be turned into a learning opportunity. But there are times when you need to exert more control. Cold Turkey allows the user to temporarily block off social-media sites, gaming or addictive sites. For more restrictive measures, use the computer’s operating system to limit access to programmes and websites. If using Windows 7, simply go into the control panel, click on Set Up Parental Control for Any User and follow the onscreen prompts. On a Mac, launch System Preferences and select the Accounts preference.

You can download free or cheap third-party software programmes that impose time restrictions, block inappropriate content/ websites, observe socialnetwork activity and set up filters. Top-rated programmes for Windows and Mac are AceSpy, Norton Online Family, Net Nanny, Bsecure and Spector Pro. Research and compare other parental monitoring software using the site Find The Best. And if your child has online access with a 3G mobile device, choose a software suite that also monitors text messages, transactions, pictures and a full list of phone logs. Remember, this software will only monitor personal devices not a school or friend’s computer.

You could also consider setting up a home router to protect your child. For this to be an effective measure, it needs to be configured via a web-based interface through a web browser on your computer, and you will need to remove access to any other open networks from neighbours. All routers have some form of content filtering capability: scheduling time limits for use on selected days, controlling internet activities for specific users or blocking domains and URLs. When purchasing a router, ask an expert about the most appropriate brand for you.

Be aware of what browser your child is using to surf the net, for instance Safari, Firefox or Chrome. You can control access by going into the browser’s settings panel and selecting the types of sites you want enabled or disabled. Blocking pop-ups and disabling the option to delete browser history are other useful controls. If you think your child will simply download another browser, take advantage of the computer’s operating system and set a password to prevent downloads. An alternative option to web filtering is using a content filtering tool such as DansGuardian, K9 Web Protection or OpenDNS. Note that a truly techie kid will likely be able to work around filter measures.

Burma Before your friends started posting photos of their recent trip to Burma, did you have any idea what this country has to offer? Long-time fan Cecilia Yee reveals all

ince 1992, tourism has been encouraged in Burma. However, as of July 2006, fewer than 750,000 tourists are believed to have entered the country annually. With the political situation improving, and Aung San Suu Kyi out of house arrest and in parliament, many more of us are likely to visit Burma (or the Republic of the Union of Myanmar as it has been officially known since 1989). Who isn’t curious to see the land that time forgot? Ideally you’ll visit sometime between October and March; from April to September, it can get hot and humid with heavy rains. But don’t let that stop you. My last visit was in July, and while hot, we didn’t see a drop of rain. Similar to its neighbouring countries of China, Thailand, India, Laos and Bangladesh, Burma is a country of hills, mountains, beaches, temples and jungles. But what sets it apart is its people.

Yangon: colonial capers Most tourists fly into Yangon (formerly the British capital of Rangoon), and discover an intriguing mix of times past and present. A few years ago, there

was very little sign of any foreign (or domestic) investment in the city. If you visit now, you will be welcomed by billboards advertising the latest mobile phones, some high-rise buildings and line after line of cars. But don’t be put off. The former British capital in fact has the highest number of colonial-period buildings in Southeast Asia. And they are easy enough to find – just head down a likely looking (crumbling) cobbled street or tree-lined avenue. The former High Court, the former Secretariat buildings and the former St Paul’s English High School are excellent examples of a bygone era. As you stroll you’ll be greeted by the super-friendly smiles of the locals, most of whom still wear traditional longhis (sarongs). The Burmese girls in particular are a joy to behold, their faces patterned with thanaka (a white sunscreen made from ground bark) and their shining hair hanging down to their waists or even ankles. No trip to Yangon is complete without a visit to Shwedagon Pagoda; the glorious goldencrusted temple that watches over the city from

Hot-air ballooning over Bagan

Singuttara Hill. Despite the number of believers who flock to the pagoda, it exudes an incredible sense of calm. It is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda for the Burmese with relics of the past four Buddhas enshrined within. Leave time in the afternoon to visit Yangon Zoological Gardens, nestled in the heart of beautiful Kandawgyi Lake (formerly Royal Lake) to the west of Shwedagon. Here you’ll find a decent zoo, an aquarium and amusement park. Along the eastern shorelines of the lake is the imposing Karaweik, a concrete replica of a Burmese royal barge built in 1972. Celebrate your visit by staying in the Victorian-era Strand Yangon that stands majestic in downtown Yangon. Enter the lobby with its black-and-white marble flooring and inlaid teak-wood furniture, and you immediately feel transported back in time. The service is wonderfully personal, with the attentive staff really making an effort to get to know you. If they see you enjoying a particular drink at breakfast, they will make sure that you get the same drink the following day. Talk about feeling pampered!

concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world with many dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Construction began in the 11th century when King Anawrahta converted to Theravada Buddhism, and set out to spread this doctrine to his people. Bagan Archaeological Zone, a 13 by 8 kilometre area centered around Old Bagan, is somewhere you could lose yourself for days. What makes the temples look so romantic is the process of graceful aging. Spinning micro twisters, common in the region, have peeled off much of the stucco coating in a process of gentle erosion. The exposed rustred brick transforms to a golden brown-like patina when hit by the sun's rays. Today, with the growing interest in tourism, there is an effort to protect and preserve many of f these temples.

Exploring Buddhism in Bagan

Note that while Cambodian stupas and spires are shaped like artichokes and corn cobs, Burmese ones are gourdand durian-shaped. Sign up for a (charming and relaxed) guided tour, and you’ll learn a lot about ancient Burma – and ancient Buddhism. Added to which you get a real glimpse of everyday Burmese life – villagers ride through the temple site on ox cart going about their business, and you can hunker down with the old folk smoking thick postprayer cheroots.

Burma has so much to offer tourists, and it’s a heavensent destination for history lovers. It’s also one of the only places in Asia where you can watch at first-hand a people in transition. And as I said it’s the people that really make Burma fabulous. Their warmth and friendliness fills me with peace and contentment.

And my must-do? For a spectacular panoramic sunrise view of the temples, splash out on a hot-air balloon ride.

Villages line the shore, and also pepper the tiny islands. But this being so, I have come across few vacation spots so peaceful and meditative. Take the time to sit back and relax, as you watch the villagers boating busily around, and the local fishermen (I call them Asian gondoliers) angling in their own inimitable style. I love to hire a boat and cruise around Inle Lake. This is your chance to visit with Burmese blacksmiths, silversmiths and silk weavers. Most of the simple yet picturesque village houses are built on stilts. You can sail to a bustling local market to see the colourfully dressed farmers and villagers of the region, particularly the Pa-O tribe, who bring in oxen carts loaded with flowers, vegetables, dried fish and clothing – and lay their goods out on the ground. Spend a few days getting to know the locals. I like to hire a bike and head out to the surrounding villages – the scenery is fantastic and the villagers unbelievably friendly. Bring lipstick and biros for the kids! Indein Village on the west coast of the lake is a definite must! The ancient Shan, vineencrusted pagodas on the hilltop are a dramatic sight. And for something entirely different, stop by Red Mountain Vineyard for a sneaky Sauvignon Blanc and an amazing panoramic view of the town and lake.

sland School student Kristian Dodds is 15 years old. Rugby-playing Harrison Campbell is 14 years old and he goes to West Island School. They met through a mutual interest in mountain biking, riding almost every week on Lantau Island. “We soon found out that we also share the joy of fishing, so we became fishing buddies, loving it as much as mountain biking,” says Kristian. The pair have been fishing together for about three years now.

So what are their favourite spots, and why? Kristian cites Shek Pik Reservoir, Silver River in Mui Wo – and the DB Reservoir! “Although we only fished there once and we didn't catch anything, it was very exciting,” he says. “There was lots of activity in the lake and we did get some bites at our bait. There’s a lot of potential in that area but we didn't have enough time to explore.” The boys admit that DB security came by and asked them to leave, even though they produced their Hong Kong fishing permits.

And what do the boys talk about when they fish? “New places to fish, the best spots for fishing and what we expect to catch,” says Harrison. “Otherwise we are planning our next activity together, fishing or biking.”

Advice for anglers It’s always a pleasure to spend time with people who know what they’re doing, and even better when you can also learn a thing or two. And when asked about the technical issues of lures and bait, the boys launch ahead. “We don’t have any lures,” says Kristian. “And for bait we often use shrimp and also a mixture of a dough we create ourselves. Squid is also great bait. Salting shrimp, then freezing it, makes it become very strong and more difficult to come off the hook than when it’s just fresh.” And the boys are fishermen with a conscience, too! “We use barbless

hooks so that it causes less harm to the fish when we catch them, and so that if we release the fish they will still survive,” Harrison explains. The boys confide that they don’t meet any English-speaking fellow fishers, and regret that they don’t speak Cantonese to help strike up the kind of conversations that are so enjoyable amongst like-minded people. But Kristian says they often get some very helpful tips from locals who fish at the DB rocks and Mui Wo. “They have helped me to find the best places to fish, and recognise the fish I catch,” he says. Harrison relates an interesting story about a day of fishing in DB. “We casted off the side of the pier where the ferry to Mui Wo disembarks. We were there quite a while, until the ferry arrived, and we met a local who told us what time and where the best possible (in his experience) places are to fish in DB. He told us that at DB North Plaza around 8pm

you can catch decent-sized groupers and sea bass about 80-centimetres long. We saw a picture of some of the fish he catches, and they are really big! The best time to fish is definitely at night, but we can’t fish too late in DB because we have to catch the last ferry back to Mui Wo.”

The lure explained Kristian says that the best fish he ever caught was a rainbow trout, on an angling trip with his cousins in Scotland. His favourite local fish is tilapia – a delicious Filipino fish that’s not too difficult to catch. And so I ask the obvious question: Do you eat your catch? “Depends on the place I catch the fish. If it’s a good size and if I know what breed of fish it is, I might. If I don't know, or don't like the fish, I will often put it back,” says Kristian. “Rivers in Mui Wo have some huge fish; I haven't caught f

the giants yet but I have caught some decent-sized ones in the river. These rivers run past the houses and are quite polluted. I would usually only eat what I catch in reservoirs.” I ask the boys what kind of person is passionate about fishing, and Kristian quips, “Not many people I know enjoy fishing; they find it very tiring and boring. A sport like this can be quite difficult to get into if you spend over seven hours fishing and don't catch anything!” But he is quick to add that the sport appeals to people “who enjoy the quieter side of life and the amazing scenery that Hong Kong has to offer. It’s a great way to relieve stress, especially when you are right in the middle of your GCSEs!” “I enjoy fishing because it’s a break from school; it’s so relaxing and in my opinion it’s a stress reliever,” Harrison concurs, adding, “It’s a great time to chat, and if you get a bite, adrenaline rushes through your whole body.” Kristian says, “We are really lucky to be living on Lantau Island, so that we get the opportunity for all of this,” adding that sadly, Harrison will be heading to New Zealand this summer for boarding school.

And with that, we have to believe these fast friends’ fishing days are not over. We wish them ever-broader fishing horizons, as far as the eye can see, and a lifetime of ‘big ones’ – that never get away.

As the weather warms up and school winds down, the kids are going to need something to do between naps. Here’s how to deck out the deck for summer, says Elizabeth Kerr 64

erhaps you recall a time when you were a kid that summer meant eating dirt, splashing around in a paddling pool and falling on your face. If you do, chances are you grew up someplace with open spaces and quiet roads. Rather like DB or Mui Wo. Building a space for kids to get some air and sun (and yes, we all need the sun) and have kid-style fun is a goal plenty of local mums and dads aspire to. So having a play space you can see through the living room window is ideal. And it can even be done 30 storeys up.

remarks Joan. “The worst case that I heard of was a 10-foot trampoline set up on the rooftop being blown all the way to the podium. It’s very important to secure outdoor toys.” On top of that, there are times when it’s simply too hot, too rainy or – for true Hong Kong kids – too cool to play outside. Dual function toys are ideal. “Most outdoor toys can be used indoors,” explains Joan. “Almost all [our] outdoor items are UK or American brands that are meant to be used outdoors, and can be used indoors too.”

Be savvy, pick your product Be safe, utilise space Joan Szeto, general manager of Toys Club points out that there’s no such thing as a size guideline to worry about in creating a safe outdoor space for kids. “Actually it’s the other way around. We did some consultation work for schools, clubs and playgroups, and space always came first,” she says. Start with what you have and work outwards from there. “It doesn’t matter how big your space is. It’s fun to make the most of what you’ve got. Being practical is the key. I have a balcony so I buy things that suit my balcony,” agrees Lucy McLennan, marketing manager for Bumps to Babes. Common sense is of course crucial. Proper safety features for rooftops, high balconies and even gardens are a nobrainer, but safety and security also depend on the age of the children using the space.

So what makes a good outdoor play item? “Children play best with things that their parents are going to enjoy as well,” stresses Lucy. “If you have a love of drawing, why not purchase an art easel that can be used outside and can also be brought in?” If you can’t get hold of dirt and worms, Bumps to Babes has a slew of products for infants to threeyear-olds, among them Junior Trampolines, Pop-up Pools, Art Centres and (age-appropriate) role-playing Hospital Playtents – all of which are ideal for compact spaces to complement the store’s range of larger items. Bizzie Lizzie in Mui Wo also has a wide range of toys to boost kids’ outdoor fun, ranging from skipping ropes to butterfly nets, bug catchers and boomerangs. “We stock everything from buckets and spades to water-balloon slingshots, Gayla kites and baseball kits,” says owner Elizabeth Hemmings. f

“Children love to have a space outside to call their own, so if you can give them part of your home's outside space it can comprise anything,” says Lucy. Balconies are just as workable as any other space. “It is very popular to put outdoor toys [there], but first ensure child safety,” Joan agrees. “Once this is done, we suggest getting toys one at a time.” Start with toddler sand pits and move along as Timmy and Katie get older! And if you want to share your outdoor space with your kids, be sure to pick toys that pack up easily. (Parents should also note that you can rent large outdoor play items for kids' parties from Lantau-based company Jumping Castles).

Be practical, consider the weather So what do many parents forget when creating that personal playground? Oddly, it’s the prosaic old weather. “We have many customers who show us pictures and request replacement parts as their outdoor items are damaged during typhoon season,”

According to Toys R Us PR spokesperson Kitty Sin, the mega retailer’s summer collection includes paved terrace/ yard, garden and balcony items. Among the best: the Bunzi, a super trike that can toggle between two- and three-wheel functions for balance training. If you have a stretch of (safe) road or a large terrace, this is a good starter bike. Similarly, the Pro Glider Scooter is a more analogue version for firsttimers. For five-year-olds and over, the Ferrari of scooters is the Fliker, a three-wheeled, body-powered futuristic number best suited to open spaces. Closer to home, the Swing Ball 3-in-1 set combines swingball, football and basketball for any surface, and it’s reasonably compact if you’re looking at a small space. For older kids, and those with more space, the KidKraft Outdoor Playhouse, which could also hold a friend, is a top seller locally. “At this stage kids like to crawl and tunnel, and appreciate a little quiet corner of their own,� Joan notes. I’m pretty sure parents will like the idea of that quiet corner too.

We offer quality Nepalese dishes that no one else can offer. People love our yak’s cheese fritters, and homemade momos (Nepalese style dumplings). We also have a selection of two imported Nepalese beers: Mustang and Nepal Ice. Right now if you buy two, you get one free.

My wife and I have been living in Lantau Island since 1996. In that time we’ve made friends with people from all over the world. Knowing little about each other’s home countries, we invited some friends for dinner and served our traditional Nepalese food. They enjoyed it so much that they suggested we open our own restaurant. It was really my wife Pushpa’s dream to open a restaurant somewhere in Lantau, so after several dinner parties bringing such positive feedback, we knew it had to be the right decision. We wanted our restaurant to be somewhere you could rely on to find food that is authentically Nepalese and delicious.

We wanted to introduce our food and receive feedback from the local people. Nowadays we advertise when we can and offer special promotions, but for the most part we rely on word-of-mouth referrals.

t 8IBU BSF ZPVS GVUVSF QMBOT Over the past two years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of customers coming not only from Lantau but from all over Hong Kong to enjoy our food. We have not physically expanded yet, but this is something that we are planning with the support of our customers in Discovery Bay. Our next move would probably be to expand into DB and open a restaurant there.

Do you or someone you know suffer from eczema? DB resident Dr Graeme Bradshaw, founder of the Integrated Medicine Institute (IMI), clues us up about this common skin disease

What is eczema? Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a dry itchy skin condition. It is not contagious, though it is often hereditary. In mild cases, the skin is dry, scaly, red and itchy. In some cases there is blistering, and bleeding if scratching is not controlled. For those with eczema, the skin doesn’t produce as much fat and oil as other people’s, and is less able to retain water.

How common is it? Approximately one in five children and one in 12 adults have eczema. Around 65% of children outgrow it by seven years of age, but adults may see it recur again in later life.

What are the first signs? The usual first signs include redness and itching, often on the face or folds of the elbows or knees. It may progress from one local area to larger areas because of scratching, over washing especially with soap, lack of necessary moisturising, and if aggravated by allergic sensitisation.

What are the main types of eczema? Atopic dermatitis is often inherited and begins during infancy. The skin tends to be dry and itchy even between flare ups. It often affects the creases of body joints and can occur in small patches or all over the body. Sensitivity to dust mites, animal dander and/ or animal saliva is common. Contact dermatitis refers to a skin reaction to contact irritants, such as detergents, soaps, tap water, nickel jewellery, some fruits, cosmetics, hair dyes or wool. Blistering eczema is restricted to the hands and feet. The blisters can break and cause weeping and the skin is very itchy and inflamed. The cause is often related to emotional tension. Sensitivity to metal compounds such as nickel, cobalt, chromate, or heat and sweating can aggravate this type of eczema.

Can diet help? Identifying the Immunoglobulin E (IgE) food and environmental allergies, and the food intolerances indicated by IgG blood testing is a basic starting point. Omega 3 oils, as well as Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) from borage or primrose oils often help the dry skin issues. Vitamin E

supplements reduce IgE levels – appropriate for dust mite-, and food- and contact-related eczema. Reducing intestinal yeast, parasitic and bacterial infections and replacing the healthy probiotic flora can often help those suffering from atopic eczema. Nuts, seafood, dairy, eggs or wheat may be provoking foods.

How is eczema treated pharmaceutically? Steroid creams suppress the symptoms well. Mild steroids may be used for control, but it is only a symptomatic therapy, not addressing the causes. Avoid using strong steroids for a prolonged period of time as this thins the skin. Emollient creams are usually necessary, medicated with pharmaceutical (or natural) anti-inflammatories. Desensitisation to allergies such as dust mites is also effective if that’s relevant. This can be done conventionally with micro-dose injections monthly over three years. Homeopathy also uses micro-doses; these are often taken orally. For atopic eczema to be resolved, desensitisation is usually needed.

What are the best natural remedies? Drink plenty of water, since skin hydration is often the critical issue. Some find relief through liberal application of olive oil. Add 20% of primrose oil or 10% of borage oil to this if the skin is very dry. Oil bath remedies can help, and Lavera makes a good range. Allergenics skin wash is a suitable non-soap substitute. Itching is relieved with (powdered) oats added to the bath. Oral zinc supplements often help if the mineral is deficient, which in exfoliating (flaking) eczema it usually is. And I have often seen improvement with detoxification of mercury, especially if the eczema has developed in an adult with dental amalgams or a high fish or seafood diet.

Is eczema curable permanently? Yes, homeopathy is the best way for permanent results. Talk to an experienced classical homeopath.
