Traditionally this is our Back to School issue, what with the new school year starting at the end of the month. And true to form, we’ve put together some meaty education-orientated articles for you. If you’re about ready to look into secondary-school placements for your budding teen, turn to our family matters column, to gen up on the different curricula available locally. And if you’re concerned about education funding – school and university, here and overseas – look to this month’s money matters.

As ever, though, this issue is all about inspiring Lantau residents – and their stories. Prepare to be amazed by 10 DB residents and five ex-DB residents, who completed the Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship on July 7. And on a totally different tack, get ready to be wowed by the candor of two women, who know a thing or two about surviving marriage, long distance out of DB.

At this year’s Performing Arts Camp, run by The Performers Studio and held at Discovery College, 20 children aged six to 10 years, were involved in producing a play – The Hustle. The camp was split over 12 sessions, and the children had just 24 hours to put together the one-hour ten-minute show, which they performed in The Hong Kong Arts Centre, Wanchai on June 29. Set in the 70s, The Hustle centres on a young girl who learns that fame is not as important as love. Last month, DB Pirates member, Tim McCreadie (25) was one of 30 young rugby players selected to play for the Hong Kong Development XV Team. Top talents in this squad move up to the Hong Kong A Team and ultimately the Hong Kong National Team. DB Pirate Joshua Clery (17), meanwhile, was one of 13 players chosen to represent Hong Kong in the first Asian Schoolboys Rugby Sevens Tournament on July 21.

Eight national school sides battled it out at King's Park Sports Ground, Ho Man Tin, with Hong Kong triumphing on the day.

On June 29 when The HIT Room opened its doors in DB North Plaza, freshly squeezed juices, protein smoothies and a healthy breakfast were on offer, as well as fitness games and challenges. Introducing Les Mills’ newest high-intensity interval-training programme, the highly anticipated Grit Series trial class drew a crowd of people from all over Hong Kong. The fitness studio is the first on Lantau to provide Les Mills’ Bodypump, and it boasts a full suite of training equipment plus a boxing circuit. July 13 saw Caissa Chess Club celebrate its first anniversary with a Rapid Play tournament that attracted international as well as local players. With 47 people taking part, 19 participants playing for the Open prizes, 15 playing for the Youth P4-P6 prizes and 13 for the Youth P1-P3 prizes, each player competed in nine rounds of 30 minutes each. You can hear some of DB’s top musical talent this month as the Discovery Bay Youth Orchestra (DBYO) is performing two recitals. The first takes place on August 4 at Hong Kong City Hall, Central, the second on August 31 in DB Community Centre. As well as young soloists performing on the piano and violin, the DBYO also features adult musicians, including solo pianist Isabelle Chedin and the orchestra’s artistic director, Patrick Pok-man Leung. The whole orchestra is set to play chamber and orchestral works by Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven and others, and there will be a guest performance by the 4-Way Duo at the DB concert. Did you know that every day millions of children under the age of five die of pneumonia and diarrhoea, and that these numbers would be drastically reduced if everyone got to wash their hands with soap.

And yet, hotels in Asia discard millions of bars of barely used soap each day – that’s where the charity Soap Cycling comes in.

Founded by DB resident, David Bishop, Soap Cycling is the first organisation of its kind in Asia, and it’s operated largely by University of Hong Kong student volunteers. They collect, sanitise and recycle slightly used soaps and other sanitation amenities that are then distributed to disadvantaged communities around the world, particularly Asia. I

t’s not difficult to guess who Cindy Reid might be as we meet in DB North Plaza. Wearing tight black leggings and a black sports vest, and sporting an enviable postworkout glow, the fitness enthusiast has the kind of infectious energy that makes digging out those running trainers and hitting the roads of DB seem like a wonderful idea. Even in this heat.

There’s no denying Cindy is in the best of health and in amazing shape. She takes health and fitness seriously. This is the woman who ran up 100 floors of the International Commerce Centre (ICC) in 19 minutes 42 seconds to claim the Women’s Champion title at the Vertical Run for the Community Chest in 2012.

Super-fit Cindy likes to run halfmarathons on her vacations, is a TRX-qualified, certified gym/ group exercise instructor and a NASM personal trainer. She has just opened The HIT Room in DB North Plaza; the first studio to bring Les Mills newest high-intensity, interval-training programme (the Grit Series) to Hong Kong. Providing Les Mills Bodypump, Boxing Circuit, TRX, Legs, Bums and Tums and Total Re-Core group exercise classes, as well as personal training, it’s nothing less than a one-stop fitness shop.

When not teaching at The HIT Room, Cindy teaches Bodypump, Spinning, Hardcore and RPM at Fitness First. Did I also mention she’s an equities research analyst by day?

obtained a chartered accountant qualification, and studied long-distance to gain an MBA from the University of North Carolina; and so began her decade-long career in the finance industry.

It was on graduating that Cindy “really started to get into gyms”. At what she describes as “her most obsessive time”, when working as a fund manager, she used to train at the gym three times a day: before and after work, and during lunch. These days her fitness schedule has relaxed somewhat but working out daily is still very much the norm.

“I’ve been the biggest gym junkie for some time; if I don’t work out I feel something is missing from my day,” she says.

In 2007 Cindy returned to Hong Kong and as fate would have it she quickly met the man who would become her husband and business partner – an Australian working as a captain for a private jet. Two years ago they moved to  Discovery Bay.

Yet, as she greets me like an old friend and quickly turns the conversation to ask how I came to live in DB, there’s no hint of judgment on my less than textbook healthy lifestyle. The judgment is however all on my part as we sit down in Uncle Russ to chat. Cindy orders coffee – a frothy, creamy latté. There’s no sugar in there, but still it’s not the kind of drink you expect a tiny, bronzed gym instructor with incredibly toned biceps and sculpted abs to order. And that’s what makes Cindy’s approach to health and fitness so achievable.

She is not about perfection, she’s about lifestyle choices.

What’s more I just noticed something else. Pearl earrings.

Huge, iridescent pearl earrings that make a striking contrast to her sporty outfit and hint at another, perhaps more glamorous, side to Cindy’s lifestyle.

Taking shape Explaining her soft Australian accent, Cindy was born in Hong Kong and moved down under for school. She studied at the University of Sydney, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance. Not stopping there, she

healthy lifestyle because I have been through the journey myself, and I’m still living it every day.

Cindy’s message is about creating healthier lifestyle choices but enjoying the occasional glass of wine or frothy coffee when the time is right. “Remember, being healthy is a lifelong journey, not a destination,” she says. “Nutrition is one of the most important determinants of how you feel on the inside and how you look on the outside.”

So how does this relate to DB? With the tennis courts booked up for days in advance and runners hitting the roads even in the midday heat, are we a health-conscious community?

Or does all that drinking in the plaza suggest otherwise?

“People in DB prefer to have fun whilst they chase a healthier lifestyle,” Cindy explains. “The age demographic is generally mid-thirties to fifties and many may have put on a little bit of weight from an indulgent lifestyle, having children and a lot of travel.

“While I love the environment here the clubs don’t have great facilities,” she continues. “Group exercise is the best way to work out as you are motivated and get to meet likeminded people.” It’s clearly this gap in the market that led Cindy to open The HIT Room.

“Of course you have to be passionate about what you do as the fitness industry does not pay as well,” Cindy adds. “I think that’s my motto: you have to love what you do. If you don’t love what you do it’s not sustainable.”

Talking of which Cindy has always run a charity-driven course. “I have done a lot of voluntary work in my time, from teaching English to disadvantaged children to fundraising for different foundations,” she explains. “I feel that donating is the least I can do for others who are less fortunate.” She is now committed to making an annual donation from The HIT Room to support local charities. If Cindy has her way she will also get The HIT Room team to participate in community initiatives, such as the DB beach clean-ups.

As we part ways, Cindy promising to catch up again sometime and me promising to take the free trial classes at The HIT Room, I ask what drives her. “I want to make exercise fun, exciting and motivating so you are compelled to do more,” she says. With that I’m sold. Will I wear my pearl earrings when exercising? You bet!

love on the run What if getting to see your spouse involved a 3,000-mile commute? Long-distance relationships – make or break, mire or fire, real or fake? Megaen Kelly finds out

A

t girls’ night last week, after a Pinot Grigio or three, a friend of mine whose husband is a pilot confessed that she really likes the fact that he isn’t always around. She enjoys ruling the roost when he is out of town, and having her independence, and looking forward to his return. This led to an interesting discussion, with not all of us agreeing that hers is the ideal marital arrangement.

Then somebody mentioned the Metcalfes (not their real name), who left for Dubai in 2008 after a 15-year stint in DB. Husband Lee is now back in DB for work, while Lyn and the kids have stayed in Dubai. How, we wondered, does that type of marital set-up work?

Lyn Metcalfe, clinical psychologist and couple’s therapist Dr Melanie Bryan, and relationship and individual counsellor Kerri Gunthorpe, who was based in Australia from 1994 to 2000, while husband Ralph (a pilot) lived out of a suitcase in Hong Kong, fill us in.

Living separate lives For both the Metcalfes and the Gunthorpes ‘living apart’ came about through necessity. Australian-born Ralph and Kerri moved to DB in 1990. Three-and-a-half years later, Kerri and the kids – then aged nine, six and four – returned to South East Queensland, while Ralph continued to be based out of Hong Kong.

“We did the commute thing for six years – it was important to us that our children grew up in Australia,” Kerri says. “For the first four years it was very manageable as my husband was home for up to 10 days every month. However, in the latter years Ralph’s work description changed and

he was only getting home for a few days a month, so we reassessed. We decided to settle as a family in DB, with only my eldest staying on in Australia at boarding school.”

The Gunthorpes returned to Australia in 2008, but now that the kids have flown the nest Kerri and Ralph are back in DB – and celebrating 32 years of marriage.

UK-born Lyn and Lee, who have been together since their late teens, lived in DB from 1992 to 2008. “We arrived with two backpacks and left almost 16 years later with two daughters,” Lyn quips. The Metcalfes then lived together as a family in Dubai for four years before Lee’s work again necessitated a move – back to DB. Loving the Dubai lifestyle, Lyn was not keen to return to Hong Kong. She also did not want to disrupt her girls’ education; her eldest had just been offered a longed-for place at a top Dubai college. “We didn’t have the heart to take away that dream, and good school placements are so hard to get in Hong Kong,” she says. “Lee and I spent hours discussing the situation. None of us were happy with it, but needs must.” Lee now gets to be in Dubai for three to 10 days every six weeks.

Hanging on the telephone/ Skype So how can a couple in this situation manage to thrive? By keeping the doors of communication open. “In my work I have seen too many relationships break down mostly due to a lack of good, clear communication,” Kerri notes.

“Even with the modern forms of communication, nothing compares to sitting down together and having a good chat.

If commuting is your lifestyle of choice, make absolutely sure that you have empathy for your partner’s situation; it will not be ideal for either of you. Make time to talk, and ensure you are always fully up-to-date on each other’s lives.” 

“I miss Lee especially in the evenings when we would discuss our days,” Lyn says. “We talk every day, and I’m very appreciative of Skype! But not having my husband, who is my best friend, with me for comfort and support is difficult.”

This backs up something Dr Melanie has to say. “The frequent traveller usually wants to fit right in to the couple or family routine upon returning, but particularly with children, the established routine is disrupted, which can cause havoc.”

Dr Melanie warns, “There can be awkwardness in a couple’s communication when they live apart, with one wanting to relate their business or general activities, while the other aches for some time away from all of that.” Kerri concurs, adding, “When you do see each other, give yourselves time to be together as a couple. Anything less and you begin to drift into individual existences.”

Cats in the cradle

Reunited and it feels so good On the plus side, we are told that ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’. Regardless, Dr Melanie notes that, “some people relish their space and the ‘me’ time” a long-distance relationship brings. Here Kerri says, “I am fortunate that I have always liked my own time but when it got to the long times apart I found that rather challenging. Not because I could not manage but because I wanted to be sharing our lives and our children’s lives. I would drop my husband at the airport and cry the 40 minutes home. Although I have to add that in those six years there were times too when I would sing all the way home! A real benefit was not having to watch the history channel or the rugby.”

“I guess there are a few benefits,” Lyn adds gamely.

“Like not having to iron his work shirts, and being able to have dinner time at 5.30pm – in DB there was often a second sitting when Lee worked late. I count down the days until he gets back here and I am always beyond excited to see him.”

Lyn notes, however, that there is often some tension when Lee gets home. “We have been living separate lives and then we have to answer to each other again. There are things that when you live together permanently you either don’t notice or just accept. We could bicker over these things but when he’s only here for a short time, that time is precious, so you bite your tongue.”

And what of the kids – how do they cope with the commute?

“What I noticed was that children manage if the parents are coping and happy,” Kerri says. Lyn is of the same mind, adding, “The girls have adjusted to Daddy not being here, although they still get very upset when he leaves. Initially our eldest put one and one together and made three. She was always making PowerPoint presentations of us as a family, and looking at our wedding album. I had to spend a lot of time convincing her we were not getting divorced.”

When discussing redefined spousal roles, and the balance of power within this type of relationship, Dr Melanie notes that the main caregiver may “resent their spouse’s extensive time away, as responsibility is not well shared”. Certainly Kerri notes that five years in, Ralph started to lose his place in the family. “He said he had begun to feel like an outsider in his own home. The reality was that I was both mother and father for much of the time.”

For Lyn this is less of an issue. “With regard to the girls, I would say I make most of the rules, and that was the case even when Lee was living here. I am a stay-at-home mum, so they are my job. I must add though that when he’s home I’d like  The Gunthorpes did the commute for six years

Lee to take over the bad-cop role. But he doesn’t want to be the baddy, as he’s only with us a short while. I know Lee feels like he is missing out on the girls growing up. And it’s the simple things he misses like reading bedtime stories, taking the girls swimming, helping with their homework and of course cuddles!”

You gotta have faith And so to the question of trust and fidelity. Dr Melanie says, “Of course, couples worry about this. Be alert to difficulties in the relationship which can set the stage for a person being more open to an affair or one-night stands. Also be alert to the many subtle changes in a partner that can signal an affair is beginning or is in progress. This applies equally to the partner who travels as the one who stays at home.”

Here, Kerri says frankly, “The infidelity issue was not really a concern for me; predominantly because I did trust my husband but also because I did not have the energy to worry about it as I was running a large home, acreage and raising three children! I think it was harder on my husband. I remember he questioned my loyalty after talking to someone – also a commuter – who was going through a difficult divorce. But for me, the loneliness was

what I suffered from most. I felt I was one person in a marriage and we were losing what I believe women really need – a connection. That of course impacted many areas of our relationship.”

Lyn says, “At first I hated the idea of Lee being in Hong Kong as a ‘single’ man. I’ve lived there; I know that it’s an easy place to stray. I also knew that I loved him very much and that I had to trust him. He was doing this for us. This doesn’t stop me wanting to question him and dreading any weekend he’s going out. I could worry myself silly but it would just make our situation more difficult. On the other side of the coin, I believe that Lee trusts me implicitly and I can vouch he has no reason not to. We are a very strong unit.

“Long-distance marriages are a true test of your love, strength and devotion,” Lyn concludes. “In my mind, it’s a temporary situation. It’s not easy, but when you have something special, you work hard to make it survive.”

nce your child is approaching secondaryschool age, you have an important choice to make between all the different curricula (and combinations of curricula) available.

There are 19 schools in Hong Kong offering the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), four offering GCE Advanced Level (A-Levels) and 46 schools offering one or more of the three International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. These are the most popular curriculum choices among expat parents as they are taught and recognised internationally, and are therefore transferrable.

But before looking at these curricula in depth, Anne Murphy, director/ consultant at ITS School Placements, outlines some of your additional options.

“While the IB is becoming the preferred curriculum at Hong Kong’s private international schools, many also offer home-grown curricula,” Anne says. For instance at the

Australian International School, students can take either the Australian Higher School Certificate or the IB Diploma.

At the Canadian International School, it is mandatory for students to take both the IB Diploma and the Ontario High School Diploma of Canada.

At YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College, Tung Chung, students in Forms 3 and 4 follow an integrated curriculum, which combines the content of both the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) and the IGCSE. In Forms 5 and 6, students can choose to continue with the HKDSE or apply to study A-Levels.

Post-16, students who enjoy and do best at more practical styles of learning have the opportunity to take the International Applied Diploma (IAD), currently offered at Island School, King George V School and Shatin College. Students typically select three subjects accredited by the UK’s Business Technological Education Council (BTEC). There is also the

With schools reopening this month, you may well be looking ahead and thinking about secondary education options for your budding teen. Five local educationalists sit down with Hannah Ball to provide an overview of the various curricula on offer for Lantau students opportunity to take one or two BTEC courses and add IB subjects for a broader learning experience. “BTEC courses are practical with a vocational context; they are equivalent to A-Levels and are widely accepted university entrance qualifications in the UK,” Anne explains.

In 2012, West Island School was the first pilot school to offer the International Diploma Career Certificate (IDCC), which includes BTEC qualifications combined with the International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate (IBCC). “Students need to qualify in a second language, as well as one other IB subject alongside their BTEC courses, and do an Extended Project to achieve this qualification,” says Anne.

IGCSE – flexibility and recognition Developed by the University of Cambridge International Examinations nearly 30 years ago, the IGCSE is still the most internationally recognised qualification for students

aged between 14 and 16.

“One of the great things about the IGCSE is its international flavour,” explains Physical Education coordinator at Discovery Bay International School (DBIS), Matthew Corbett. “With the IGCSE, there are no English government initiatives ruling what we do and how we do things, meaning we can more easily cater our curriculum to suit children studying here, and those intending to go on to other countries to study.”

Each IGCSE subject is taken as a separate qualification, marked from A* grade to G grade, with a C grade being widely accepted as a pass. Students generally take between eight to 13 subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and a science. “Taking IGCSEs at DBIS, students can choose from a broad range of subjects – anything from Drama to Physical Education, Food Nutrition or Art and Design,” says Matthew.

taking GCSEs in the UK allowed him to focus early on the subjects he really enjoyed. “Several of the students at DBIS may not know exactly what career they want to pursue, but by the time they come to do IGCSEs, they have a pretty good idea about the subjects they enjoy (and don’t enjoy), and what they are good at,” he says.

Another benefit of the IGCSE is the choice students have to take a Foundation Tier Paper or a Higher Tier Paper in some subjects. A maximum grade of C can be achieved. For students who struggle with a particular subject, this allows them to achieve a C grade more easily.

A-Levels – early specialisation Once students have completed their IGCSE qualification, they have the option to continue their studies by taking A-Levels. This qualification, generally taken over the final two years of secondary schooling, is used to widen postsecondary education options. Students typically take three or four A-level modules.

sufficient Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) points, taking A-Level units allows them to gain the additional UCAS points to get into their university of choice.

IB – breadth of knowledge At many private, international schools, like the French International School, students first follow the IGCSE, then switch to the IB in the sixth form. The German Swiss International School’s first cohort of IB Diploma students will graduate in 2015, making this year, 2013, the last year of A-Level graduates.

Interestingly, in 2001, English Schools Foundation (ESF) introduced the Applied Learning Pathway and switched from the UK National Curriculum across all schools to the IB. Private Independent Schools (PIS) run under ESF also initiated the IB system. Accordingly, primary schools moved to the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). At secondary level, ESF schools continue to adapt the National Curriculum of England in Years 7 to 9, and then take GCSE and IGCSE courses. Discovery and Renaissance Colleges offer the IB’s Middle Years Programme (MYP).

“The IB diploma is fast becoming a qualification that students can use to apply to universities worldwide, Europe and America especially,” Anne explains.

“On the IB Diploma, students select options (specialising in three) from six required subject groups: first and second languages, humanities, sciences, Mathematics and the arts,” she adds. “Students also write an extended essay of 4,000 words, undertake a Theory of Knowledge course, and complete 150 hours of supervised creativity, action, service (CAS) time. The depth and breadth is amazing. This benefits gifted students and those who are unsure where their academic future lies.” 

f you are living and working in Hong Kong with children at school, you will doubtless have felt the drastic increases in education costs over recent years. My daughter, Hannah, I am very proud to say, has just graduated from the University of Calgary, Canada.

The overall cost of her university education was around HK$1,350,000. I have another daughter, Holly, at Discovery

College; and assuming everything goes to plan I will soon be seeing her through university.

Quite a challenge, when the cost of education funding has risen over 400% since 1986, and the cost of living over 100%. Consider too that for the last 12 to 15 years, education fees have increased by around 8% per annum,

whereas the average income has increased by 3 to 5%.

(These figures include fee-paying schools, colleges and universities around the world.) Simple mathematics tells us that the cost of educating our children has and is rising faster than our incomes.

The price of learning To give you an idea of the current costs involved in educating a child, from primary school through to university, both in Hong Kong and overseas, take a look at the graphs below.

All costs are per annum and listed in Hong Kong dollars; university costs include board and living expenses.

We all know Hong Kong is a pricey place to live but if you consider the cost of education, for fee-paying institutions, Hong Kong is less expensive than the UK, Germany, the US, Australia and Canada. The annual cost in Hong Kong for secondary is around HK$100,000 to HK$120,000 but if you sent your child to the UK or US to board, the cost would be around HK$300,000 to HK$350,000. Certain parts of Europe are less expensive on further education for now, but most require that your children speak the language.

Parents should note that many Hong Kong schools require a debenture or bursary fee to be paid to put your child on their respective list. This currently ranges from a month’s deposit of the school fee upfront to HK$1,000,000.

It’s clear there is a huge increase in costs as children move into further education. Even if your child opts for university in Hong Kong, you’re looking at a basic HK200,000 per year. For university overseas, additional factors have to be taken into account, such as board and living expenses, special costs relating to advanced study (computers, equipment, insurances), extra-curriculum requirements (study trips, student exchange) and so on. A year of university study in the US comes in at over HK$500,000 with these ‘extras’ factored in.

Finding the funds How then to tackle the financing? Firstly, of course, you can allow your child to ‘borrow’ the necessary sums. Alternatively you may choose to take the costs upon yourself, either by meeting the payments out of your current income or refinancing your assets. Lastly, if you have planned ahead, you will be in a laudable position – having already saved the necessary funds.

MONEY MATTERS In my opinion only the foolhardy (and the uber-rich) bank on funding children’s education from ‘current’ income. This approach is, at worst, overly optimistic – “By the time my kid is 18, I’ll have reinvented the wheel and become a millionaire” – at best, overly risky. You leave too much to chance. What happens if university time comes along and you are not in a position to lay your hands on additional funds? Think carefully about this, particularly in today’s financial climate and with job uncertainty being what it is.

Deciding to re-finance your assets when your child is of university age may not be that practical a solution either. By this time, you’ll be that much older, loans will be harder to come by and the payback period significantly reduced. Also, you will want to be thinking about your own future – your retirement funding.

The best option then is to plan ahead. Note that it is increasingly common for parents to start putting money aside for their child’s education almost as soon as the umbilical cord is cut. This way time is on your side, and you are opting to make your current income work harder for the future. There are two main ways to proceed.

Firstly, save a set amount each month from your income. In doing this you are investing at an average price as the date that you invest on is fixed – but the price that you buy at is

indful of how Gautama Buddha achieved enlightenment – by meditating under the Bodhi Tree – browsing the website of the Bodhi Meditation Society (BMS) seems as good a place to start my research as any. The organisation does not shy away from science; there is plenty of scientific literature to support the notion that meditation is not a placebo.

The BMS site offers a long list of claims: meditation boosts immune function and enhances physical health. It slows the rate of cellular aging, controls asthma, reduces stress, enhances brain function, increases brain size and empathy, and improves productivity. Each of these claims, and many more, are supported by links to articles in a variety of credible sources, ranging from The International Journal of Behavioural Medicine and the Institute of Noetic Sciences to The Wall Street Journal, Psychology Today and the Harvard News Office. Meditation works – 3,000 years of human history can’t be wrong.

Don’t just do something – sit there If you want to give it a try, Kadampa Meditation Centre Hong Kong is offering free sessions as of September at the MultiPurpose Hall, DB Office Centre. Each class includes guided meditations, group discussions and Buddhist teachings.

“Meditation concentrates the mind on a virtuous object (such as loving kindness or compassion),” explains resident teacher Gen Kelsang Rabten. “The more familiar our mind is with virtue, the calmer and more peaceful it becomes. When our mind is peaceful, we are free from worries and mental discomfort, and we experience true happiness.

Whenever we meditate, we are performing a mental action that causes us to experience inner peace in the future.”

Angie Bucu, a wellness researcher who tutors in the online Mindbody Wellness course at RMIT Melbourne, is a believer in meditation. A DB resident since 1998, she says, “Meditation has taught me to slow down, be mindful and aware not just in meditation but in anything that I am doing. It has helped me reduce my stress, to be accepting of things life throws my way and to be grateful. After sitting in meditation, you have a sense of grounding and ease, a knowing that the day will go well, and it usually does. I am a much calmer, more patient person as a result of my practice, and I am rarely on autopilot

anymore. I also have a lot more self-confidence and trust my intuition more acutely.”

Angie has predominantly practised mindfulness meditation, and has not connected with any particular spiritual/ religious path. “In my view you do not have to follow the path of a particular practice to attend meditation sessions,” she says. “Group meditations can be very powerful regardless of whether one person is practising mindfulness, another a chakra meditation and another transcendental meditation.”

How to get to where you are Rather than recommending different techniques or schools of practice, Angie suggests anyone considering meditation should first understand why they are seeking it out. Is it for health and wellbeing, or to ease a stressful life, or are you seeking a spiritual path? You may change your goal as time goes on but it helps to have an intention from the outset.

As with so many things, regular practice makes perfect, and Angie admits she initially had difficulty with this. That is, until she started to understand about mindfulness, a form of meditation whereby the objective is not to ‘silence’ the mind but rather to develop concentration to become more aware of what is happening moment to moment. “In formal mindfulness practice you will be given a chosen focus, such as the quality of your breathing,” she says. “Thoughts and feelings will arise, and you simply acknowledge them as they occur, and observe them mindfully without judgment, and gently return your attention to the chosen focus.”

Investing some precious time to cultivate a clearer, steadier mind is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself and other 

people who are important to you in your life. With guidance, you can be supported to develop a personal meditation practice, as well as to bring mindfulness into your daily life.”

Right now Angie is focused on transcendental meditation having attended a course at the Shakti Healing Circle in Central run by DB resident Peter Herman. (Incidentally the popular holistic centre is owned by DB residents Pervin and Stephen Clasper.)

“Transcendental meditation is practised sitting comfortably with eyes closed for 15 to 20 minutes twice a day. The active thinking mind settles down naturally to a state of ‘pure consciousness’ where the mind is silent yet fully alert,” Peter, who has just retired from commercial flying after 37 years, explains. “At the same time the body gains a profound state of rest and relaxation. Everyone finds meditation easy when they practice with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's simple transcendental meditation technique. It improves all aspects of mental and physical health and is easily learnt in four lessons.”

“The giving of loving kindness through your meditation to yourself, and others you encounter, and being grateful, will ensure you find peace in your meditation whichever path you decide to take,” Angie concludes.

Crumbling temples and lost cities No stay in Sri Lanka is complete without time spent in the interior exploring the Cultural Triangle. A treasure trove of ancient cities and archaeological sites, just four hours’ drive from Colombo International Airport, it teems with UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These marvels span some 2,500 years of history and encompass the sacred city of Anuradhapura, the rock fortress of Sigiriya, and the magnificent temples and palaces of the royal city of Kandy.

Considered the epicentre of Sinhalese culture, Kandy was the last Royal Kingdom to resist British colonisation, finally losing its stronghold in 1815. Stroll around the peaceful lake and admire the mist-shrouded hills. Not far north, the imposing Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is said to house the Buddha’s tooth brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century.

Visit this month and you can enjoy one of Sri Lanka’s most exciting festivals, the centuries-old Esala Perahera.

In July and August, thousands of dancers and drummers (and spectators) converge on the temple, accompanied by ornately decorated elephants.

Sigiriya Rock, the eighth wonder of the world, draws all kinds of visitors to Sri Lanka – from geologists and history buffs to art lovers. There’s something magical about this monolith.

race Ironman triathlons are known for their gruelling length, harsh race conditions and rabid fans. Taking on the challenge in Frankfurt just last month, 15 Lantau Buffalo athletes were able to demonstrate the race mantra that ‘anything is possible’.

I

f this is the first time you are reading about an Ironman triathlon get ready to be, well, wiped out. Athletes (not all of them pros) swim 3.86 kilometres, bike 180.25 kilometres and then complete a full marathon (42.2 kilometres) in 17 hours (or a lot less) without taking a break.

That any athlete can be fit enough to complete this oneday event at first seems inconceivable. Certainly only 15 people took part in the first Ironman held in Waikiki on February 18, 1978, when the three toughest endurance races in Hawaii – the 3.86-kilometre Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 180.25-kilometre Around-O’ahu Bike Race and the 42.2-kilometre Honolulu Marathon – were first combined into one event. But since then Ironman has expanded into a vast global series of one-day (and half-day) events.

The Ironman World Championship, held annually in Kona, Hawaii, sees 2,000 competitors and is considered the most gruelling one-day sporting event in the world.

The DB connection More than 2,500 athletes from 51 nations competed in the Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship on July 7. And the big news for us is that 15 members of the Lantau Buffalos completed the challenge: DB residents Karen Fairley, Wencke Linsel, Emma Bruce, Thorsten Bruce, Bruce Pye, Vincent Ypersiel, Eduard Wehry, Peter Nott, Alex Tripodoro and Michael Pahler; and ex-DB residents, Brett Straatemeier, Adrie Offringer, Chang Chung, Neil Jones and Robert Claassen.

None of these Lantau Buffalo athletes are pros – they all have full-time jobs. The club is dedicated to building up the multi-sport scene locally, and many of the members race internationally. “Bruce and Brett are experienced Ironman distance athletes, with Frankfurt being their tenth thus far,” explains Karen Fairley marketing director

of Sports World. “Some of us had done either one or a few previously, and some of the group were Ironman virgins before Frankfurt.”

Training is intensive before these big events, and often a group exercise with the Lantau hills providing the perfect terrain. “The bulk of the training begins three months before the event where building endurance is key for all disciplines,” Karen explains. “Getting a half Ironman distance race in five to six weeks prior is a good idea as it’s a great way to ensure your training is on track, and your nutrition plan works well. It also helps build confidence, preparing you both physically and mentally for the full event.”

Triathletes begin their day with a 3.86-kilometre swim in the packed waters of Langener Waldsee. The two-loop course includes a short run between loops; water temperatures are around 23ºC. “The swim start is stressful as it is a mass start with over 2,500 athletes and the melee of so many highly energised, adrenalin-fuelled people can be intimidating,” explains Karen. “But 10 to 15 minutes into the swim, things settle down a bit, you find your space and settle into your rhythm.

The weather was great – sunny and about 27ºC, which suited us Honkies.”

Next the 180.25-kilometre, two-loop bike-course takes athletes through spectacular downtown Frankfurt and the surrounding countryside. “The bike course was a little surprising given its relatively fast reputation,” Karen says. “The roads are exposed with wide open fields 

which had us facing unexpected winds, especially on the second lap, and although we were expecting some hills, there were a lot of false flats that were quite draining. The course also required negotiating villages, with twists, turns and a teeth- jarring section of cobble stone. However, the road surface is generally billiard-table smooth.”

This smooth surface (and his super-fast Zipp Carbon Aero borrowed wheels) saw Bruce Pye owner/ director at Sports World zipping along at around 45 kilometres an hour early on in the bike course.

That was until an Italian cyclist travelling at around 30 kilometres an hour pulled out in front of him.

“Not hard to work out what happened next,” Bruce quips.

“Three of us came down, with bike parts and blood lying all over the road. Getting up, slowly, I was surprised that I could move all my limbs, with nothing broken.” But not so Bruce’s bike.

“I couldn't believe it,” he says.

“Probably the best shape I'd been in for an Ironman in the last 10 years and there was the mechanic telling me my race was done.”

Fortunately the words of a friend came to Bruce: ‘If you start a race you have to finish no matter what’.

At this point he looked around and noticed a spectator with a Bruce Pye on his way to his tenth Ironman hybrid bike. “I thought to myself I guess I could do it on that,” he says. “Little on the small side, don't like the nobbly offroad mountain-bike wheels but hey,

I have to finish!” Having borrowed the bike from ‘Julia’, and after a quick re-fit, that’s exactly what Bruce did.

Run 42.2 kilometres! Brag for the rest of your life!

And so to the full marathon – the final leg. In downtown Frankfurt, the 42.2-kilometre run includes four loops of a fast, flat course along the River Main. “At each loop you collect a band that is placed on your arm as a reminder of how many loops you’ve done,” explains Karen. “You can clearly see how many loops fellow athletes have completed, so when you see someone with three bands on their arm and you have none, it can be soul destroying. This is where the months of training kick in. It’s challenging mentally and physically of course but the desire to finish and achieve one’s goal is a major motivator.”

Ironman triathlons are a huge spectator sport, and Karen says the crowd support is hugely motivating, helping athletes reach the finish line. “The local support was incredible,” she says. “It was like we were competing in the Tour De France with masses of revellers running alongside.

“With such a large group of Buffalos racing there was an even larger group of supporting family and friends, most decked out in Lantau Buffalo supporter T-shirts,” Karen adds. “This made all the difference as the shirts enabled the athletes to spot the supporters, and vice versa with the team race kit the Buffalo athletes were wearing.”

The results Spaniard Eneko Llanos brought home the fastest overall time on the day, finishing in just under eight hours. Camilla Pedersen was the first female finisher with a time of eight hours, 56 minutes. Breaking the nine-hour barrier made her the fastest female IronDane in history.

Of the Lantau contingent, all 15 athletes made it across the finish line between 11 hours and 13 hours – well under the 17-hour limit. Incredibly the three ladies finished in the top third of the women’s field, and the men within the top half.

“It was a brilliant result, especially when you consider that not everyone had a straightforward race,” Karen says.

are fading with each recovery beer consumed. The memory of running down that finisher chute after over six months of training remains firmly etched in our minds. It brings goose bumps and a tear to the eye – an overwhelming feeling of achievement, exaltation and relief.”

“Big smiles and hugs all round at the finishing line,” Bruce adds. “I’ve learnt to expect the unexpected and deal with whatever is thrown your way. I don’t see Ironman as a oneday event but more a life journey helping you find out who you are.” Incidentally Bruce gave this, his tenth Ironman medal to Julia – the lady who lent him her bike.

eastern promise Everything old can be new again when it comes to mixing Asian antiques with modern interiors, writes Elizabeth Kerr

I

ncorporating antique elements into modern home interiors can flirt with all manner of disasters. We’ve all seen the slick, modern living room with a garish Victorian settee propped in a corner. Or how about the vintage Tibetan rug in the dining room, and the hallway, and every bedroom, and hanging as a wall piece? Dressing your home is akin to dressing yourself. Those aviator sunglasses look cool with jeans and a T-shirt, but you wouldn’t go full-on Second World War flyboy when picking the kids up after school.

With so many available in a bristling market like Hong Kong, Asian and Chinese antiques and antique-inspired accents are a popular choice when redesigning a space. A cabinet here and a sideboard there can make an impression and break up the occasional monotony of the modern interior.

But most of the pros agree: all in moderation.

Classical integration “If you have a really modern space, just putting one or two antiques within it – without going over the top with all the tchotchkes – is the way to go,” says Lantau-based designer and stylist David Roden, noting how easy it is to get carried away. “I have clients who want something, and have nowhere to put it. Sometimes you have to take stuff away.”

curl-toed shoes were used as door handles and so on. “It looked like that store in the States, Anthropology,” he says wistfully. David kind of liked it, but he isn’t pushing the style in sleek, Armani-fixated Hong Kong.

To Angela’s mind, the best way to introduce traditionally Asian items is to think of them, antiques in particular, as pieces of art. After all, you’d never overwhelm a wall with too many Picassos (good on you by the way if you have ‘too many’ Picassos). She’s a fan of using just a few choice pieces. “Their uniqueness can be perfectly displayed by incorporating them into a Western- or modern-style home,” she says. “In our experience, Chinese antiques are a better match in a modern/ Western setting than in an interior decorated in only a Chinese style.”

Antique impact There are a few ways to make the marriage of old Eastern and modern Western work. David recalls transforming an old Tibet chest into a bathroom cabinet by adding a plain white basin. “That was modern and old together and it looked really cool,” he says. “It’s a good idea to consider repurposing and reworking antique pieces that may not be in mint condition. For one project I bought some old wooden screens and I painted them white. Now they’re unique partitions between a living and dining area.”

Angela Leung of Red Hall Furniture in Mui Wo, which deals in both antiques and reproductions, agrees. “People need to keep in mind that simple is the core element for placing Chinese antique furniture in a modern house. Too many in a limited space may create a heavy image within a liveable environment. Incorporating one or two antiques can attract attention and look charismatic, so less is more.”

At Red Hall, pieces in all conditions are collected from the rural areas in China. These ‘farm antiques’ are then treated, fixed, and renewed or reproduced. “We also provide a custom-made furniture service, so our customers can order a classic piece in a modern colour or alternate size to suit their personal needs,” Angela notes.

fundamental comforts a boost. But in addition to eyecatching zing, colour and texture, an antique’s biggest contribution to contemporary style is the simplest of all. “It adds culture,” states David flatly. “Every unique piece of antique Chinese furniture has its own story to tell,” Angela adds. “Discovering more and more about Chinese antique furniture, we see ourselves as knowledge providers – not just business people.”

Another element to bear in mind when incorporating antiques into the home is placement and care – usually connected. Asian antiques are often intricately constructed and lacquered for protection as well as aesthetics and don’t fancy inclement weather. “In order to take care of an antique do not place it directly under the sunlight,” warns Angela. “UV rays may cause the lacquer to fade or come off after long periods. You also need to take particular care of the wood in humid weather to prevent it from cracking.”

So where’s the best place to source the item you crave – be it a statement piece like a dining table, a cabinet for the study or a decorative accessory? And more importantly, does it have to be the real deal? Within Lantau, both Red Hall Furniture and The Red Lantern are good options.

Angela likes the flexibility of replications given Hong Kong’s small spaces, in addition to catering to personal tastes.

She does, however, point out that, “Every genuine Chinese antique is unique, and compared with five years ago their appearance in the market has dropped significantly. The traces of time and history on the surface of [a genuine piece] is incomparable with a replication.”

That’s true, but one other factor remains crucial. “I don’t think it has to be a ‘good’ piece,” finishes David. “I think you have to like it.”

North Lantau Hospital opening in Tung Chung Photos by Terry Chow

Princess Margaret Hospital, near Lai Chi Kok, a 30-minute drive away, used to be the closest hospital for Lantau residents, so the new North Lantau Hospital due to open in September is big news.

Lantau’s first community hospital is located near the Yat Tung Estate, Tung Chung.

Construction began in January 2010, with a HK$2.48 billion budget and finally concluded in December last year. A three-hectare piece of land next to the sevenstorey, crescent-shaped block has been reserved for possible future expansion.

North Lantau Hospital has over 180 employees, 160 main beds and 20 day beds for patients not requiring overnight stays. Residents should note however that operations will be launched in stages – and the hospital will not be accepting in-patients until it is fully open in 12 months or so. Until then, people needing specialist services the hospital does not provide will be taken to other hospitals within the Kowloon Cluster.

On opening late next month, the medical facility will cater for accident and emergency (A&E) eight hours a day, from 9am to 5pm. While it is expected to provide A&E services for 16 hours every day by January 2014, we will have to wait until the third quarter until the service can be offered full-time.

North Lantau Hospital will provide much needed community care and key medical services to serve the growing healthcare needs of Lantau residents. Among the services provided under the first phase are diagnostic and treatment services, and support services such as pharmacy and administrative services.

cycling saves lives Would you spend your last day in Hong Kong cycling 110 kilometres around Discovery Bay? Andy Smith tells Hannah Ball why he did exactly that

M

ost of us spend the day before relocating overseas either in denial, or eating dim sum or on last-minute packing, but Andy Smith’s mind was set on higher things. The hugely popular DB restaurateur chose to spend his last day in Hong Kong (July 17) cycling 110 kilometres to raise money for the Somaly Mam Foundation. To date, the charity has rescued, rehabilitated and reintegrated more than 6,000 women and children from forced sexual servitude.

Starting his sponsored bike ride at 6am, Andy came through well within his designated time – less than six hours – reaching the finish at the bottom of Golf Club Road, DB at 11.23am. Still looking amazingly energetic, he admitted that the ride hadn’t been a walk in the park. “It certainly got a lot tougher as it got hotter. In fact, there were a few hills near the end that I wasn’t sure I would make it up due to cramping in my legs.

“It all started out as a dare,” Andy continues. “A friend bet that I couldn’t cycle 110 kilometres around DB in under six hours. And I just love a good challenge.” After chatting with DB Resident Alison Price, who has been involved with the Cambodia-based Somaly Mam Foundation since March 2012, Andy decided to turn the dare into a fundraiser. “I’ve always followed the cycling events in aid of the Somaly Mam Foundation, and it’s a great cause. Knowing that there are three-year-old girls being sold into slavery is something I can’t ignore,” he says. On July 17 Andy raised over HK$6,000 for the charity.

A triathlete and surfer, Andy only started cycling 18 months ago. “I entered my first cycling race in April,” he says. “The

Forest Estate Grape Ride took place in my home country, New Zealand, and involved cycling 200 kilometres, which I did in less than six hours.”

Andy, who proved his chops as a chef in Australia, made the move to Hong Kong to work at Jaspa’s in Central in 2006. Before long he was setting up Jaspa’s in DB in the same spot where Sopranos is now. In fact, it was at Jaspa’s that Andy met his wife, Natasha. The couple moved to Tung Chung after they had their first child, Noah, who is now five years old, and two years later they had their second child, Oliver. Soon afterwards, Andy opened Sopranos and Zaks in DB Plaza, while Jaspa’s moved to DB North Plaza.

Leaving DB with his family to set up home in New South Wales, Australia, Andy plans to open two cafés with an emphasis on local food sourced from within a 160-kilometre radius.

Joining Andy for the very last leg of his fundraiser, was owner of newly opened Spin Works in DB Plaza, Scott Fitzgerald; one of the many great friends he has made since living in Lantau. “I just want to say thanks to everyone for all the support I’ve received over the years. It’s been an absolute pleasure knowing so many great people,” Andy says. Commenting on the event, Alison adds, “What a wonderful thing for someone to achieve on their last day in Hong Kong. It’s a day he’ll certainly never forget and a day the children rescued from the brothels of Cambodia will be grateful for forever.”
