HK$10 MILLION BURGLARY IN DB Seabee Lane
On the night of July 9, a 5,000 square-foot house at 269 Seabee Lane was broken into by three mainlanders. The property is owned by a couple, who only live in DB during the holidays. One of the CCTVs that surround the area showed the three men wandering around the house both on the night of the burglary and at 5am the next day. When the male Filipino helper who works in the house discovered the break-in, he immediately reported the burglary to the police. Thanks to the network of CCTV cameras around DB, the police were able to arrest two of the three men at the ferry pier. They were carrying roughly HK$2 million in cash. Determined to find the third suspect, who got away with an estimated HK$8 million worth of jewellery and cash, and the missing safe, the police then sent their diving team into Siena Bay. In the course of investigations, they also conducted spot checks on Tung Chung and Sunny Bay buses. After six days, the third suspect was identified and arrested at the China border. The three men are now in custody. It’s estimated that about HK$4 million has been recovered but the rest is yet to be found. Alan Mak, manager estate for the Headland area explains: “The peak of the burglaries in hotspots Headland Drive and Seabee Lane occurred in 2009, with 12 reported cases. In 2015, as a result of the installation of 38 CCTVs around the area, there has only been this case so far. The security camera scheme started in 2012 when 11 CCTV cameras were installed around Headland and Seabee Lane, and in February 2015, 27 more cameras were added.”

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

List your Lantau business for free @ www.arounddb.com
Tell us a little about your business. Starting out as a freelance fitness professional, I worked at various mainstream gyms in Central, as well as the Discovery Bay Residents Club. The DB classes became so popular, I soon decided to ‘work from home’. Buying up some small pieces of equipment, I started Movement Improvement (MI) in DB in January, 2001.
What’s the secret of your success? Good quality, intelligent and mindful movement taught well. MI now has 19 specialist instructors and runs Kettle Bell, TRX, Personal Training, Pilates, Spinning, Yoga and Zumba classes.
How do you keep your customers interested? At MI, we prioritise delivering what the clients want, whether it’s pain relief, weight loss, increased strength, posture improvement, or something else. I also try to stay on top of the latest trends and keep my workouts as varied and fun as possible.
How do you like being your own boss? At times I find it hard to juggle the long working hours, my home life and my own training. It’s lovely to be able to do what I want the way I want, but I still have to keep everyone happy and the responsibility is huge. Any wrong decision is totally my fault. Wrong things get remembered but the good seems to go unnoticed.
Tell us three things you enjoy outside work.
Photos by N ancy Padd and courtesy ison of MI
I love to spend time with my little boy, Jack, and my husband, John, who I met in 2003 when I joined the dragon boat team No Fear, which he was coaching. We like to walk over the hills to Mui Wo, play on the beach and eat seafood.
How do you see your business looking in five years? I keep my fingers crossed that we can continue to be as successful as we are now with lots of happy, smiling clients in our bright, sunny studio space.

emember when you went off to university and your parents’ eyes lit up at the thought of finally having some time to themselves – to do all that travelling and photography and take the exotic cooking lessons they never had time for when raising a family? DB resident Martin Oxley was looking forward to those days, but he chose to give them up when he adopted a second family two years ago. Martin, now 59, a car enthusiast and former chief at Rolls-Royce Motor August 2015
Doing the right thing
“Basically this all started when I met Luz, a little more than 15 years ago,” he begins, referring to his wife, who worked in children’s retail at the time. “She had a son and as far as I was concerned, once we became very serious, he became my son. The name on a piece of paper is immaterial. Once we were married, we brought him to Hong Kong.”
Martin, currently the head of transport for the Peninsula hotels – all of them – became a ‘father’ for the seventh time, less by design than by old-fashioned self lessness.
In a still relatively conservative town, Martin and Luz are the embodiment of the modern family and proofpositive that ‘nuclear’ is what you make it.
Cars UK, moved to Hong Kong (and directly to DB) in 1995. He has four grown-up children back in the UK from a first marriage. So why choose to do it all over again when he could be enjoying a life of leisure? “My brother thinks I need a lobotomy,” says Martin, with a grin.

really, it was all or nothing,” he recalls, adding the girls had been through enough, and it would have been cruel to keep them apart any longer.
Making it work While it may not have been a battle per se, the decision did begin three years of red tape, plus arguments, cajoling, countless flights, court appearances and solicitors’ fees. “The Philippines is extremely cautious [about adoption] because of child trafficking,” Martin explains. What’s more, Julia shrieked to the heavens every time Martin showed up for a visit. “She absolutely hated me with a vengeance,” he says with a smile. And then came the fears that Hong Kong Immigration would throw up some sort of hurdle. “That was my concern,” Martin explains. “Once we’d adopted them, would we have a problem bringing them to Hong Kong? You hear so many horror stories about Hong Kong people marrying mainland Chinese women, and kids and wives who can’t come in. But I thought we can’t do any more than try. We had no trouble with John.”
The Oxleys at home in Discovery Bay
Luz, her son John, now 18, and her family hail from northeast Isabela province in the Philippines, where the schools leave a lot to be desired. Hong Kong’s worked for John; he’s just finished his A Levels at YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College. In theory, Martin’s trip back into parenthood could have ended there. But fate intervened with a heavy dose of tragedy, when Luz’s younger sister died in 2007 shortly after childbirth at just 26, leaving behind an infant and almost four-year-old daughter. Following their mother’s death,
Martin and Luz did their best to support the girls, Colleen, now 11 and Julia, 7, in whatever way they could. To make matters worse, the girls were separated, living with different family members. There were no solid adoption plans at this point, and their biological father certainly didn’t agree. “The more I went to visit, the closer I got to them,” says Martin. “When we decided to go through with the adoption, I said to Luz, “Let’s try and give them a life”. We did hem and haw about just adopting Colleen but
The couple’s fears, ultimately, were unfounded, as the process was a smooth one. “Hong Kong Immigration was absolutely marvellous every step of the way,” Martin says.
Family ties With all the paperwork done and dusted – complete with backdated birth certificates listing Martin and Luz as parents, standard practice in adoptions globally, Martin says – the girls have been in Hong Kong for two years. Martin and Luz had been “fortunate” in the past and so have a comfortable flat in Discovery Bay with room for everyone. Perhaps best of all, the Peninsula has been a big help in ways that transcend cash. “I’m a department August 2015

school in Hong Kong. Who says all big business is a cold machine interested purely in its bottom line?
of one,” Martin says. “I’ve been with the Peninsula for around 20 years. I had great support from them; they’ve been absolutely marvellous too.”
So far, the intensely modern, cobbled together family is doing well. John is a typical 18-year-old: too cool to hang out with his parents, while they talk to the press. Colleen has a Hongkonger’s unflappable attitude down cold, though it’s laced with a touch of bashfulness. She likes science, but admits, “I want to be a fashion designer”.
Martin was flirting with retirement when the adoption plan came up, but putting two kids through school (currently Lantau International School) and supporting an 18-year-old is pricey. It wouldn’t have been feasible on a pension, even from the frugal comfort of the farm the family owns in Isabela. (Martin and Luz hope to get there eventually.) But a chance meeting with one of the Peninsula’s former executives – a kindred spirit car nut – ended with Martin not having to worry about his income drying up.
Julia, possessed of a toothy grin, has already decided on medicine and is concocting ways to stick it to the 1%. Her lowincome patients will be treated for free, she says emphat ica l l y; the rich can pay double. She then offers up a fist bump. Oh yeah. T h e y ’ l l do just fine.
Retirement age be damned, Martin will continue at the Peninsula, and Colleen and Julia will finish Big brother John, 18, with Julia, 7, and Colleen, 11

id you know that back in the 1960s, Discovery Bay was a cattle ranch complete with a slaughterhouse? It was owned and inhabited by just one family, whom I’ve promised not to name. At this time there was no beef coming out of China, so the cattle were brought to DB to feed the Hong Kong people. The livestock were imported from the Northern Territory in Australia, and unloaded at the DB Pier. In the 1960s, the original beach was on the other side of DB Pier, where the August 2015
bus stop is now. (Tai Pak Wan, in case you didn’t know, is man-made.) The sea was crystal clear and teeming with fish, even close to the shore. There were pig farms on the hills – back then DB was as rural as the rest of Lantau, and an undeveloped Lantau at that. Understanding how DB came to be a residential resort involves playing a game of Chinese Whispers; there’s a lot of rumour to sift through. The original owners, the Cha Group and the Hong Kong Government were key players. It’s clear that the owners
devised a plan in the 1970s for a low-rise, traffic-free development, and that this never got off the ground. The associated scandal involves debts to the Soviet government-controlled Moscow Narodny Bank, legal battles with the Hong Kong Government and just possibly a little Cold War espionage. The head of the family who originally owned DB, who came up with the first plan for its development, is said to be depicted in John Le Carré’s spy novel The

Honourable Schoolboy (1977). The honourable schoolboy of the title is Gerald Westerby, a British spy sent to Hong Kong. One thing’s for sure, by 1979 DB was in the hands of Cha Chi-ming of the Cha Group – HKR International handles the Cha Group’s real estate businesses in Asia. Unlike other large Hong Kong developments, everything in DB was built with private money, including the roads, electricity and water supply. Even the government-operated fire and police
stations and the government-aided local primary school were built by the developer. In 1979, work started on the reservoir and core infrastructure; the first phases of Beach Village, Headland Village and Parkridge Village were completed in 1982. It’s incredible to think that realtors could not find buyers for DB’s beachfront homes. Properties in Seabee Lane now sell for upwards of HK$30 million. Back then the asking price was around HK$300,000.
DB now comprises 15 residential phases (8,326 units), and then there is the ongoing expansion of commercial developments with D’Deck, DB North Plaza and The Auberge.
Getting to and fro In terms of development and infrastructure, Fahmy Jowharsha, who moved to DB in 1984 with his wife Fathima and their two young children, suggests that bigger is definitely better. “Although Hong Kong has great transport services, August 2015

in DB we have the best transport,” he says, a point acknowledged by all those I spoke to. This may seem surprising if you have followed the disputes between residents and Discovery Bay Transportation Services (DBTPL) over the past few years. However, despite wanting to hold DBTPL and Hong Kong Resort Company (HKR) accountable for rising fares, most appear to be happy with the transport services – as long as there is no reduction in the ferry service. The 24-hour ferry service has been a real boon, especially for those who recall the long dash down Blake’s Pier on a Friday or Saturday night, hoping to make the 12.30am ferry. Now of course we also have taxis to bring us home (or at least to DB North Plaza) but most residents still prefer to take the ferry. Some may also remember the hovercrafts, known as sardine cans or submarines, because they were practically underwater when packed with passengers and supplies for the
32

few businesses that were here at the time. Old timers recall playing cards on the way to Central – the trip took so long. If you get annoyed when marine refuse causes the ferries to stall, spare a thought for the hovercraft passengers back then. If a vessel couldn’t be fixed at sea, another would come to rescue the passengers, which involved a pretty hairy transfer. “We had to walk across a plank from one to the other, while both boats were rocking,” says Christine King of Headland Homes, a DB resident since 1986.
From dai pai dong to D’Deck The commercial outlets too have been a rewarding addition to the service offering. “It’s a dream having all the restaurants and services now,” says Dawnna Wayburne of DMR School of Ballet. Dawnna’s husband was one of the first to live in DB in 1983. Dawnna arrived with their son in 1984, by which time a small PARKnSHOP and Watsons had opened near the pier. Until the opening of D’Deck and
its many restaurants, there were few options to eat out. The DB Residents Club, built with the first phase of development, offered one of the few (and reputedly not very good) dining options in those early years. Many also frequented the dai pai dong over in Nim Shue Wan. “If you wanted to find anyone (in DB) on a Friday or Saturday night, that’s where you looked first,” recalls Fathima. “We brought our own wine and paid around HK$35 each for 15 dishes or so. It was a bargain and so much fun.”
Still a village Despite substantial development, DB still oozes community and village living. Shailaja Gidwani, artist and resident since 1988, says DB has “always attracted people from different parts of the world. They want the green outdoor spaces, sporty activities and interaction with people from other cultures and other countries. It is a community of well-informed residents and these people are doing a lot of things to bring awareness of community needs to HKR, the

government and the community itself. After all what is community – it is a place where people understand and accept each other.”
‘80s and ‘90s, come back here to live,” says Dawnna.
“DB used to be a very expat and professional-oriented community,” Dawnna adds. “But as time has passed the population has changed, and this diversity has made it a much richer place.”
The addition of S.K.H. Wei Lun Primary School in 1993 and Discovery College in 2008 to the already established Discovery Bay International School (DBIS), changed the dynamic for kids in DB. “It’s been interesting to see the kids transition from going to school on Hong Kong-side to staying in DB to go to school,” says Dawnna. “While going to school in DB has its positives, there was a level of freedom and anonymity that kids had which they don’t have now.”
All this has been a draw card for many DB kids to return to DB as adults – to live and work, and for the benefit of their children. Farhad Jowharsha, who recently moved back to Hong Kong with his wife, Doreen and their two children, is a case in point. “I am so warmed to see kids that have graduated, or who grew up here in the

grew up in DB from the age of 13. Now a mother of three, she also chooses to live and work here. “There were only a few of us then whereas now there are many, so I’m sure it’s not the same for kids today,” says Katie. “We couldn’t wait to get out of the house and head to the barbeque pits (now La Costa), to the skate park we made (Crestmont) and to the rock pools. We got arrested, too, for joy riding in our parents’ golf carts. That’s why golf carts now have two keys.” Being outdoors seems to have always been a way of life in DB. “Now my kids are growing up, they always want to be outside, in the plaza,” says Katie. And who can blame them.

THE INTERNSHIP
It’s tempting for students to spend the summer holidays kicking back with days at the beach, followed by nights on the town. But getting some exposure to the world of work is a much better idea, and it can be almost as much fun. Melissa Stevens reports
In the 2013 movie, The Internship, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson had loads of fun as Google interns and ended up getting recruited

ong Kong students take heed. A recent US study has found that undertaking an internship is becoming more and more important for graduates, with more than 60% of the surveyed students having interned before graduation. The Class of 2014 Student Survey Report surveys employers too, and shows that an internship has become a key aspect of the recruiting process. The research also shows that not only can an internship lead to a job, it can lead to a bigger pay packet when graduates start working. (Fans of US movie, The Internship, 2013, in which Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson get signed up by Google after a successful, if hilarious internship will need no convincing of this.) Students and graduates who act fast may still be able to sign up for a spot of work experience this month, alternatively now is a great time to get something organised for later in the year. Make time to intern, even for just a couple of weeks, and you’re sure to reap the benefits.
Career competition Discovery Bay resident of eight years, Samantha Cornelius is the founder of StandOut Internships, which arranges internships for students aged 18 to 26. The company caters for both international and domestic students, who pay a fee for a package of services relating to the work placement, such as business etiquette courses, career mentoring, social activities and, if required, visa processing and accommodation. “Everybody is leaving university with a degree,” Samantha says. “Students are finding even when they get top, top grades they are still not getting into the companies they want to work for. An international internship will distinguish a young professional from other university students that they are competing with in today’s job market.”
And Samantha speaks from experience – the qualified lawyer completed an internship at an Australian bank, which proved helpful when she first entered the workforce.
but are not certain of the specific direction they want to take in their chosen field, or for someone who has studied a generalist degree and is not sure what to do next.
“Many companies are looking for more than just good grades – they also want experience and professionalism, initiative and drive,” Samantha adds. “Today, internships are regarded as part of a student’s education and an important rung on the ladder to success.”
Michele says interning with a global realty firm helped refine her career direction and goals. Her duties included business administration, preparing and scheduling property viewings and also cold calling people to see if their properties were available for sale – not an easy task but one from which she learned a lot. “I also had a lot of fun,” she says. “I got to shadow real estate agents, who viewed the most expensive properties in Hong Kong.”
What’s key is that students and graduates are given exposure to realworld work experiences, which helps them develop skills in problem solving, communicating, taking initiative, self-confidence and adaptability. An internship also gives an emerging professional their first chance to cultivate mentors, contacts and friends to help build their careers. DB resident Michele Lang undertook a three-month, summer internship two years ago, after arriving in Hong Kong from the US with a degree in business administration/ project management. Her internship was organised by StandOut Internships. Fast forward two years and things have come full circle. Michele is now working as the company’s programme manager. “I think you definitely have to have internships even before you graduate,” Michele says. “There are just so many impressive people these days that if you don’t have any experience, prospective employers wonder what you’ve been doing with your time. At StandOut we see CVs where people started interning in high school, at places like KPMG or PricewaterhouseCoopers. They are only one- or two-day shadowings but this is something that never crossed my mind at that age.”
Getting direction Interning can be valuable for those who have completed their studies
At the end of her internship, Michele secured two job offers within the company but she ultimately declined, having discovered that real estate was not the right career path for her. Several months later she was offered her current programme manager’s role. Joanna Hart, who moved to DB in 2012, after studying politics and international relations in the UK, has a similar story to tell. She undertook an internship in 2013 as a programme coordinator and, in addition to a practical insight into the working world, she says the experience opened her up to new job ideas and boosted her confidence. Joanna regrets now that she didn’t intern while she was still at university, and she recommends that young DBers make the most of summer opportunities. “Whether it’s for a few weeks or a few months, you get an idea about what you want to do and build up experience,” she says. Joanna, who is now working as a school administration assistant in the UK, reinforces Michele’s experience that sometimes an internship can be about finding out what you don’t want to do. “I have had friends who have studied law and done an internship in August 2015

Samantha Cornelius, an eight-year DB resident, is the founder of StandOut Internships
As the managing director of Ark Relocation, DB resident Kate Lorenz regularly employs interns
a law firm and then realised they didn’t like it,” she says.
Dollars and sense One of the biggest concerns for an intern is whether or not to accept an unpaid position. Some companies offer positions that are unpaid and, while prestigious and rewarding, bills still have to be paid. Students should note that it is always possible to negotiate hours to allow time for another paid, part-time job. At StandOut Internships, Samantha places about 45% of people in paid internships and 55% in unpaid roles. She says there is value in an unpaid internship if the firm in question is offering a structured programme, which delivers on the intern’s objectives. There is, of course, the potential for interns to be exploited and used simply as free labour for routine or menial tasks a firm would otherwise have to pay someone to complete. Interns need to ensure that they are offered the opportunity to carry out diverse and meaningful tasks.
DB resident Michele Lang joined StandOut Internships for work experience and she’s now its programme manager
Mutual benefits Internships are a two-way street. While aspiring job seekers gain from the work experience, businesses also stand to benefit. “There are clear benefits to hosting an internship, not least because the host company usually gains an additional staff member, who is eager to learn and motivated,” Samantha says. “Youth today tend to be techsavvy and aware of the latest trends – social media, marketing, management – which enables them to bring new skills, ideas and perspectives to the organisation. “Some businesses use internships as part of their recruitment strategy, because they offer an opportunity to trial out candidates before offering them a permanent position,” Samantha adds. Kate Lorenz, a DB resident of five years, is managing director of Ark Relocation, a destination service provider in China and Hong Kong, providing support to people moving from overseas. Ark Relocation provides internships which are tailored depending on location and the company’s needs.

Joanna Hart, who moved to DB on graduating in 2012, found interning invaluable
“I interned while at university and found it invaluable,” Kate says. “It’s great to be able to give young individuals with drive the opportunity to get work experience. Working for a smaller business rather than a large multinational company is invaluable because you get to see all parts of the business, rather than just scanning and filing.” “Most of the internships are support/ administrative based,” Kate says. “We have also had media interns who have assisted with internal needs, such as video training guides. We hire those who have skill sets that can assist us with work.” Kate recommends other DB businesses consider employing interns, and that local students take them up on the offer. And why not? It worked out well for Vince and Owen at Google.

DBEAR PROJECT DB residents Clara Chan and Dr Francis Chiu are raising funds to name DB’s very own moon bear, the DBear

DB residents Clara Chan, Dr Francis Chiu, Christine Lampert and Lauren Gordon are on a moon bear mission, and they want the whole community to get involved. Sam Agars reports
K
ept in cages often not big enough to stand in, typically from birth, for the purpose of extracting bile from their gall bladders, the plight of over 12,000 moon bears held captive in China and Vietnam is very real. And it is something that 27-year DB resident Clara Chan is determined to do her bit to eradicate, with the help of the community.
For the past four years, Clara has volunteered with Animals Asia Foundation (AAF), the Hong Kong non-profit devoted to ending bear bile farming and improving the welfare of animals in China and Vietnam. Many DBers will already be familiar with the moon bear concerts Clara holds annually in DB in support of AAF, and this year, with the DBear Project, she is taking her efforts up a notch.
Helped by fellow DB residents Dr Francis Chiu, Christine Lampert and Lauren Gordon, Clara is in the process of raising funds to name DB’s very own moon bear, the DBear.
Naming a moon bear “Bears rescued from bile farms and living out their days at our sanctuaries receive their names through the August 2015

TALKING POINTS
Name a Bear programme,” explains fundraising director for AAF Bianca Fischer, a three-year DB resident. “A donation of HK$155,000 covers everything in the first three years of the bear’s life – their medical care, food and enrichment – and of course the name stays with them forever.” “I’ve seen the amazing work AAF does,” adds Clara. “It’s saved over 500 bears since its inception in 1994.” The rescued bears are transferred from farms, that see bile extracted via brutal, outlawed methods, such as using rusting catheters and drilling holes directly into the bears’ bellies, to AAF’s award-winning sanctuaries in Chengdu, Nanning and Hanoi. While Name a Bear isn’t an option for most individual donors, a host of international celebrities are involved with the programme. Moon bears Derek, Pickle Nicol, Phoenix, Baobe and Ginny have, for instance, been given their names by Ricky Gervais, Lesley Nicol, Matt Sorum, Karen Mok and Virginia McKenna, OBE. “Many clubs, work groups and sometimes even schools set themselves this target for their fundraising in order to name and care for their own bear,” Bianca says. “As a DB resident myself, I am thrilled to be part of this community initiative. Thank you to everyone in advance for their dedication. I look forward to Discovery Bay having its own moon bear.”
Community initiative For Clara and co, the first step of the fundraising process is a t-shirt competition, which kicked off in June. Students are being encouraged to design a moon bear t-shirt (entry deadline August 15), which will be sold throughout DB. In the pipeline are a DBear Family Fun Day, planned for DB Plaza on September 26, and a dinner party at the Auberge Hotel in DB, slated for November 13.

“We are still working on the details for the family fun day,” Clara says. “We would like to have a theme, maybe a carnival with lots of fun games for kids. Things like facepainting, magicians, balloon making and making moon bear cookies.”
“I have witnessed the kindness and generosity of the DB community and I know we can do it,” she says. “A lot of people here recognise AAF and whenever I talk to people about this they all want to volunteer and help.”
Clara, who has been teaching piano in DB for 27 years, is also confident that DBers will come up with their own ways to raise funds, such as bake sales and garage sales.
Thanks to this year’s moon bear concert in March, a third of the targeted HK$155,000 has already been raised. Looks like DB will soon be taking good care of DBear.

MOMENTS
STEPPIN’ UP
A self-confessed gym junkie, four-year DB resident Cindy Reid is making her presence felt on the global tower running scene. Sam Agars reports
C
Vertical fitness
indy Reid ran up her first tower, the IFC, in 2010, and she went on to win the first ever ICC run-up in 2012. Co-owner of DB’s The Hit Room, she is currently ranked third on the Vertical World Circuit in her first full season in the sport.
Never one to back away from a challenge, Cindy has one eye on the future and is hopeful that sustained training will see continued improvement. A competitive relationship with husband Wes, also a fitness buff, coupled with her The Hit Room commitments, gives her the perfect base.
Cindy’s most recent feat saw her place fifth in the Taipei 101 International Tower Run-Up on May 3, scaling 2,046 steps in just over 16 minutes.
“If Wes goes for a run without me, I get upset,” Cindy says. “I do a lot of crosstraining and we lift a lot of weights. We do Grit Strength, which has a lot of burpees, high-knee runs, tuck jumps, power presses, squats and lunges. I aim to run 30 kilometres a week and I do some outdoor stairs in DB.”
Entry into tower running As a sport, tower running has gradually gained momentum and recognition world-wide, since the inception of the Vertical World Circuit in 2009. While Cindy admits it’s not the most glamorous sport – she sometimes trains where people dump their rubbish – she says it’s not hard to see why people are drawn to it.
“With the buildings, once you get in you know exactly what to expect. It’s very different from running,” says Cindy, who has been running competitively since 2008. “The temperature stays pretty much the same, you get used to the low level of ventilation and you learn to expect the burn in your legs. Plus, once you get to the top, the view is amazing, which is very rewarding.”
44
It was after Cindy won the ICC event in 2014 that her ‘career’ began to speed up. “That was when they sort of noticed me,” she says. “I got a lot of local media coverage because not many Asian people do tower running.” The Vertical World Circuit comprises eight run-ups per series, and each

runner’s four best performances count towards their final standing. Cindy is bullish about her chances of maintaining her top three ranking this year; getting any higher in the rankings, however, may be a little tougher. “I’m about two minutes behind world number one,” she says. “It’s going to be really hard to get up there unless those ladies retire. For Cindy, who never considered herself a natural runner, there is the added motivation of showing people that, with application and a healthy lifestyle, they too can achieve things they may have never thought possible. “As a 16-year-old I was really overweight and it took me a long time to get to where I am,” she says. “You just have to train yourself and believe in yourself. Wes and I eat and sleep well, and we train hard.”

Roman Empire. As a sightseer, you are following in the footsteps of historical giants, like Achilles and Alexander the Great; the Roman emperors Trajan, Hadrian and Constantine; and St John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene.
In Turkey, the past is everywhere. Not only was it part of Ancient Greece, it was also a powerhouse province of the
Embarking on this historical tour, I was prepared to see some ridiculously awesome ancient ruins. What I hadn’t expected was to be so wowed by the country’s natural diversity. Travelling through Turkey, you take in not just the balmy Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea coastlines, but
fell in love with Turkey last year, when I visited its hip, multi-cultural capital, Istanbul. But the face Istanbul shows to the world is ultra-modern, and local friends advised me that to really get to know the country, I needed to look further afield – and further back in time. So it was, on this my second visit, I decided to tour the country and learn as much as I could about its history.

also wind-whipped steppes, barren deserts and alpine highlands.
Troy and Pergamum Troy (as in the Troy of the Trojan War and Homer’s Iliad) made for an exciting opening act of my journey – not least because I was familiar with its epic past having watched the 2004 Hollywood movie. Troy was in fact a stronghold from 3,000 BC, and archaeological digs reveal the houses, palaces and

defences of not one but nine Troys. Each new city was built over the ruins of the other – the top (most recent) layer is Roman. But it is the Homeric ghosts of Priam, Hector and Paris; Menelaus, Agamemnon and Achilles – and of course Helen – that linger. The oversized Trojan horse guarding the gate is a slightly tacky tourist attraction, but you can see why the present-day Turks had it built. Next stop, lofty Pergamum, which
once housed more than 100,000 ancient Greeks. The summit offers up the ruins of columned marbled buildings that must once have rivalled those of Athens. Taking in the splendid vistas, we went out on to a platform where the Altar of Zeus used to stand. Pergamum experienced its golden age as a cultural centre, under the Romans. Parchment, and hence the book, was invented here. We visited the ruins of a library that housed 200,000 volumes: it was second only
to Alexandria in Egypt, as the best stocked centre of learning in the ancient world. Another highpoint is the Temple of Trajan, a Corinthian temple completed by the great Emperor Hadrian, parts of which have been beautifully restored. You can also venture underground to the asclepion – an early spa-cum-medical centre.

ancient cities in the eastern Mediterranean, Ephesus is ruin rich – you can explore its baths, temples, theatre and library. In its heyday during the Roman Empire, it had a population of over 400,000 which made it one of the largest cities in Roman Asia Minor. The city was also an important centre for early Christianity. It’s mentioned in the Book of Revelation. John the Apostle is said to have written the Gospel of John in Ephesus, and many believe St John the Evangelist brought Mary Magdalene to live there after the crucifixion of Jesus. Ephesus is one of the big tickets of Turkish tourism, and you’ll want to wake early to avoid the crowds. The Library of Celsus, which you’ll have seen in travel books, is probably the site’s most beautiful structure. Richly carved and three storeys tall, its tapered columns once gave way to majestic coffered ceilings. Rome, as they say, conquered the Mediterranean not just with its might but also with its architecture. Other key monuments to check out at Ephesus include the impressive Corinthian-style Temple of Hadrian, which features Tyche, the Goddess of Chance, on its main arch; and a 25,000-seater theatre, built for drama, and later used for gladiatorial combat. The land here in south-western Turkey, near the Aegean, is positively littered with ruins. Standouts for me included Miletus, where a gigantic Greek-Roman theatre dominates the terrain; and Didymi, where the Temple of Apollo (famous for its oracle) is huge enough to rival some of the most important ancient Egyptian sites.
Pamukkale and Cappadocia Driving into central Turkey, the focus of the trip changed slightly. We were invited to take in some splendours of the natural world that have been wondered at since ancient times. I was looking forward to this last leg, as I’d noted that our destinations, Pamukkale and Cappadocia, are

often listed among the top 10 ‘unreal landscapes’ people must visit. Pamukkale, meaning ‘cotton castle’, is aptly named. The ancient city sits in a totally arid landscape but offers up bubbling hot springs and ice-white travertines, terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water.
You can take a dip in the hot springs, believed since Greco-Roman times to have rejuvenating powers. Next stop: Cappadocia with its fabled ‘fairy chimney’ landscape of tall cone-shaped rock formations. An allnatural phenomena, resulting from erosion, Cappadocia’s fairy chimneys

are straight out of a Disney movie. I’d advise anyone to get their first real glimpse at sunrise, from a hot-air balloon. This was such an incredible experience. Our balloon rose with the sun, and as the fairy chimneys glimmered into being, they were bathed in a glorious orange glow. It’s the stuff of psychedelic daydreams. Probably the most visited archaeological site in Cappadocia is the Goreme Open Air Museum, a cluster of cave churches hewn out of the soft tufa rock. Beautiful murals and frescoes line the walls. You can also explore Cappadocia’s underground cities, where early Christians hid from the Romans. There are around 200 known underground cities, some large enough to accommodate over 30,000 people.
Cappadocia’s fabled fairy chimneys
On this trip, I travelled thousands of miles, through 10,000 years of history, taking in some mind-blowing natural scenery along the way. It’s an
experience I’d recommend to anybody. Returning to the present, to hip and happening Istanbul, actually came as quite a shock.

MOVING MEDITATION Photos by www.evoqueportraits.com
If you’re looking for a holistic way to exercise that will benefit both body and mind, head to Tai Pak Wan in DB for a spot of Qigong, says Sam Agars
52
A
t a time when health, fitness and appearance are at the forefront of people’s minds, and fads are aplenty, there are many still reaping the benefits of some of the world’s oldest, most traditional methods of wellness. One of these is the ancient Chinese practice of Qigong (pronounced ‘chi kung’), which is well over 2,000 years old and is still widely used. Qigong is based around a series of postures and exercises involving slow, circular movements, regulated August 2015
breathing and focused meditation. Devotees believe that Qigong allows them to train the mind to direct the body’s energy, or chi, to any part of the body – and that when moved correctly, chi can bring the body to a natural state of balance. There are three major types of Qigong, namely healing, spiritual and martial/ sports. Some styles are gentle like Tai Chi, others are more vigorous like Kung Fu. Qigong training focuses on the body as a whole, rather than singling out specific parts or muscle
groups for attention, as is the way in most other methods of exercise.
The principles of Qigong Ten-year Discovery Bay resident Lawrence Tse, who runs the Tse Healing Qigong Centre and holds a weekly class on Tai Pak Wan, describes Qigong as moving meditation. “It’s a holistic exercise,” Lawrence, 49, explains. “You see some people exercise and try to focus on the muscles. We instead want to work on

the whole body, including the mind, emotion and energy. Qigong works organs, joints and circulation. We work muscles together with the movement, but we do not need to specifically train muscles.” According to Lawrence, Qigong takes its principles from Taoism, an ancient Chinese philosophical, ethical and religious tradition that encourages people to live by certain principles as a way of achieving self-acceptance. “The concept of being powerful in
Chinese and western [cultures] is quite different,” Lawrence says. “The western power is about being strong, like Rambo, but the Chinese power is knowing nature. You really have to join nature, be nature. In Qigong we do just that. We don’t really need to push the body, it’s not about that. Even if your muscles are strong, does it really mean you are very healthy? Being healthy is within, what you can see on the outside doesn’t matter much.” When taking one of Lawrence’s classes, it quickly becomes obvious that
Qigong is not your typical exercise, like running or bike riding. You don’t ‘feel the burn’; you don’t sweat or suffer from shortness of breath. Qigong is something that requires more patience than sheer hard work; you need to trust that this moving meditation is benefitting you. “The body is just a part and the mind and emotions always affect the body,” Lawrence says, while taking his charges through their warm up. “The spine, of course, should be straight, the body should be centred. We should be August 2015

which in turn has a roll-on effect on the body.
The benefits of Qigong
“The body’s problems all start from being stressed,” Lawrence says. “If you hold the body tight, how long can it stand it? Very soon you will feel there is some problem. By relaxing your mind and body, you can stop at least 60 to 70% of the physical problems. Your immune system will be stronger; your blood pressure will drop.”
Due to the wide range of movements used, Qigong can have a positive effect on the whole body. By targeting the joints with actions designed to release tension and stress, Qigong can assist those with problems ranging from bad backs to aching knees. At a more athletic level, it can improve stamina, flexibility, coordination and balance. Qigong also focuses on relaxing the mind and creating a sense of calm,
54
August 2015
Running up and down the rolling hills of DB or going to the gym is not for everyone, and Qigong offers
an alternate way to keep your body moving, while having the added, and rather significant, benefit of calming the mind. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels and can be used in a range of different ways. Whether you are an athlete searching for an edge, someone looking to tone their body without resorting to intense physical exertion, or someone craving a spiritual outlet, Qigong offers something for all types. On top of this, there is also the more profound effect that healing Qigong can have on those with an illness.

Healing Qigong Lawrence specialises in healing Qigong, and he believes that harnessing the body’s energy can have a therapeutic effect on a wide range of ailments. Two of his long-term clients, 53-yearold DB residents Penny Akers and Dean Fisher, have been practising Qigong for two-and-a-half years and have been reaping the rewards. Dean has seen improvements in all aspects of his body, with trips to the chiropractor for back and neck treatments now a distant memory. “I feel much more grounded, much stronger in the legs,” Dean says. “I like the whole spiritual side of it too – knowing how to relax and how to get the energy going in your body.”
For Penny, who suffers from stage four cancer of the peritoneum, the effects have been far more powerful. After initially treating her cancer with chemotherapy, Penny has turned to more unconventional methods to fight her disease since its return last year. “It was an Australian doctor who advised me to take up Qigong,” Penny says. “I think Qigong gives me energy, calmness and wellness. I have actually got cancer, but looking at me, a lot of people don’t believe it. I’m not in bed,
I walk up the hill to the DB Reservoir. Qigong has been a big contributing factor towards me feeling well, despite having 18 tumours and doctors thinking I probably shouldn’t still be around.” While Qigong is still very much on the periphery in DB, Lawrence is doing his best to spread the word. He would like to see more people sit up and take notice of the age-old practice. “I hope that one day the whole world will adopt it,” he says.

TRAVEL SAFE: CONSULT KAYEKAYE We all go through different stages of life and so do our insurance needs. Besides the mandatory insurance required by the Hong Kong Government (including domestic-helper insurance, house insurance, automobile coverage and life insurance), there are many optional insurances worth considering. This summer, quality travel insurance should be at the top of your list!
Travel Insurance The primary benefit of travel insurance is the knowledge that should something go wrong while you are abroad, you won’t be responsible for finding the money to put it right. Make sure then that your policy covers the following: 1. Emergency medical treatment 2. Emergency medical assistance 3. Medical evacuation 4. Hospital benefit (a small daily amount covering overseas hospital costs) 5. Cancellation, curtailment and trip interruption 6. Missed departure 7. Personal liability (in the event that you injure a third party or damage their property) 8. Legal expenses 9. Personal accident 10. Personal belongings and baggage A standard travel-insurance policy contains many different sections of cover, not all of which everyone needs. But for most people, a standard policy will cover all the unexpected events that can occur away from home. I wish you a happy and safe holiday! I AM: KayeKaye Khemlani (PIBA No. 0032-009006), a native English-speaking insurance advisor, with a strong presence in Discovery Bay and Hong Kong. MY OFFER: I can do a comparison shop for you free of charge, to ensure that you have made the right choice and check that you have the right product at the right price.

BOTCHED BURGLARY AND BATMAN Following the recent burglary on Seabee Lane, Peter Sherwood decides we need more CCTV cameras in Discovery Bay, plus a couple of superhero crime fighters
I
’d never thought of little old Discovery Bay, or indeed greater Lantau (because I think Lantau is greater than, say, Mongkok) as a hotbed of criminal activity. That is until I saw a sign notifying residents about the arrest of burglars in our squeaky clean and très elegant midst. It read: “CCTV records showed that there were three suspicious males in Seabee Lane around 8pm, Thursday July 9.”

I don’t know if CCTV cameras are also watching DB Plaza. On weekends Big Brother CCTV would likely catch at least 10 times that number, who women might regard as suspicious. And cameras in the plaza would be a good idea if they picked up on the immature and the mindless, who leave remnants of their feeding frenzies piled on the tables. Management could stick the images on Facebook in an appropriately infantile ‘show and tell’.

The owner of the robbed property initially told the Hong Kong Standard that ‘very little’ cash and jewellery had been stolen. This was soon upgraded to HK$10 million, which must have seemed to a low paid reporter like the Great Antwerp Diamond Heist of 2003. There followed reports of a stolen safe dumped in the harbour, and divers fumbling around in the mud and murk. My dog would have a better shot at unearthing the Holy Grail.
So, what was all that wealth doing at home? Stuffed under the owner’s mattress it would draw the same interest as a bank deposit – zero. But at least if it was stolen from HSBC, she’d have someone to blame.
DB gets off lightly There are about 50,000 CCTV cameras in Hong Kong, which is not many compared to the UK’s 1.85 million. It is estimated that the average Brit gets looked at 300 times a day.
DB gets off lightly and we’re probably not spied upon through our bedroom windows if, in these days of smaller and more expensive flats, we’re lucky enough to have a bedroom window – or even a bedroom. Given a local crime rate that’s right up there with nonsense in a nunnery, I’d have thought we would also have CCTV cameras where they are sorely needed – on the main road to catch speedsters. But what DB and Lantau really need is a Batman and Robin, serious crime fighters with a bat cave under Sunset Peak, emerging every few months if only to despair at the low level of general naughtiness. They could then terrify all the crooks with highly charged crime fighting phrases, such as ‘Effective crime prevention begins with vigilance’ and ‘Now you can sleep better at night’. Note: In case you’re thinking the Seabee Lane thieves were sophisticated, two of the alleged were caught with a bag of loot trying to escape – on the Discovery Bay ferry. Holy Failed Ferry Ride, Batman!
Peter Sherwood has lived in DB for 16 years. The former head of an international public relations firm, Peter is the author of 15 books and he has written around 400 satirical columns for the South China Morning Post.
