DB MOMENTS Carol Keen’s charity climb for Parkinson’s

December has to be my favourite month in DB as we get to celebrate all the international holy days as one community. From Hanukkah on December 21 and the Christian celebrations on December 25 right through to Russian Christmas on December 31, the holiday season is always a blast. To help you celebrate this year, we’ve listed all the top DB happenings for the month (page 10 to 18), plus six of the best events on Hong Kong side (page 66). There are eating, dining, shopping and gifting ideas galore! You’ll also find plenty of seasonally focused articles – a guide to celebrating Xmas ethically right here in DB (page 43), and an introduction to a classic Viennese Christmas (page 48) that will have you rushing to book your trip for next year. Also, should you be heading off to Koh Samui with the kids this month, be sure to read our editor’s action-packed to-do list on page 54.

K

Since this is the end-of-year issue, we’ve placed a special focus on inspirational members of our community. You can read all about leading junior golfer Steve Lam, who shot 64 to break under par for the first time aged 12 (page 20), and get the inside story on Carol Keen’s fundraising climb to the top of Kilimanjaro, (page 80). What’s more, if you are considering a radical career change, you’ll want to turn to page 24, to find out how three determined DBers achieved just that. Merry Christmas!

Picnic in the Park, on November 5, was the best yet. Estimates have the crowd at between 8,000 and 9,000, and the total raised for the Hong Kong Student Aid Society and the Hong Chi Association is expected to top HKD100,000 when the final numbers come in. The organisers would like to thank the DB community for their incredible support in making this year’s event such a huge success in every way.

Photos by Bernhard Wamel

This year's DB 10K Charity Run on November 13 turned out to be a very fast race indeed. Thomas Kiprotich broke the record with 32:13 and the winner for the women was Anita Freres, who did the 10K in 43:28. Nearly 400 runners went the distance to raise over HKD80,000 for the Ben Kende Foundation. Ben Kende (pictured) is an 18-year-old schoolboy who was seriously injured while representing Hong Kong during the opening game of the Asian Rugby Junior Championship in Bangkok in 2010. Ben Kende, his family and the organisers would like to thank all participants and sponsors for their amazing contribution to this event. To help raise funds for Ben’s future, visit www.benkende.com.

The Discovery Mind Kindergarten (DMK) Operation Santa Claus sponsored Charity Walk saw approximately 500 people walk through DB to Siena Park on Saturday November 19. Thanks and congratulations must go to the children, families and friends who came out in threatening weather. Thankfully the rain held off and participants were able to walk in mild conditions. This year DMK hopes to match the funds raised in previous years and are pleased that the many yummy cakes baked by DB families raised just under HKD8,000.

Fayre for foodies at DBIS The Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) Food Fair on December 3, from 12-4pm is a truly international gourmet treat. You’ll also be entertained by local talents and have the chance to shop for gifts for the whole family. There’s a wonderful selection of plants on sale plus a dedicated area for kids’ activities and games.

Caroling on the pitch Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) is holding its annual festive extravaganza, Carols on the Pitch on December 7, starting at 6.30pm. Friends and families are invited to come along with a blanket and picnic, ready to enjoy the seasonal sing-along. The concert will feature the talents of the DBIS orchestra, choir and recorder ensemble, and there may even be a visit from the man in red himself!

Off the wall at DBIS Kindergarten Take the time to visit the DBIS Kindergarten Library, where new murals are inspired by Julia Donaldson's classic stories, including The Gruffalo, about small creatures outwitting huge ones. British artist Lou Ryan has cleverly worked Hong Kong scenes into the murals, making them a joy to see. Ryan also paints 'grown up' art and has recently exhibited her work in Hong Kong. DBIS musicians a hit in Beijing

DB resident, Andrew Woodward, has just published his new murder-mystery The Water Dragon, through Handheld Culture. Detective Inspector Chambers, seconded to the Hong Kong police, teams up with local Detective Li to search for the prime suspect in a London murder case, with several scenes taking place in Discovery Bay. Woodward donates most of the proceeds from his books to a school for orphans in Uganda (visit http://kitaleshcooluganda.com). The Water Dragon is priced at HKD60 and is available in print locally or as a Kindle eBook at www.amazon.co.uk.

Last month students from all over Asia took part in a 5-day musical workshop in Beijing hosted by the British School of Beijing. Seven Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) students, namely Meg Bradley, Dante Gutu, Anna Hardy, Justin Heaton, Marina Ikeda, Joshua McLaughlin and Sandra Zamora, took part in the orchestral and choral workshops, and all performed at the Gala Concert on November 14. The varied programme from DBIS included ‘hits’ by Bach, Queen, Handel and Madonna.

Lam modestly states, “I believe that there are also young enthusiastic golfers who look up to me, as I was asked for autographs during the UBS Hong Kong Open when I played.” After such a strong, consistent start at such a young age, Lam has earned the right to rest on his laurels, but instead he envisions a long and even more remarkable career ahead of him. “I wish to be playing professional golf for a living, I haven't really thought about any other dreams as I'm really passionate about it.” Even so, Lam understands the importance of having a Plan B. “I want to play professionally, but I am also going to college and looking to do history … if I don't become a golfer, perhaps I will become an archaeologist looking at fossils and stones.” Whichever way Lam decides to play it, the results are certain to be – as they already are – groundbreaking.

Create family traditions Save a tree. As long as you have space to keep it year-round, buying a potted tree and reusing it year after year not only saves cutting one down or investing in the materials used for fake trees, but it also puts oxygen back into your immediate environment. Take a trip to Mongkok’s flower market at the beginning of December and choose one that will become part of the family. Decorate the tree with quality or homemade decorations that you’ll save from year to year. Making decorations can include the whole family and become part of the magical fun and anticipation leading up to Christmas Day. If you want to get out of DB over the holidays, take the family to midnight mass at St John’s Cathedral on Christmas Eve, or Katterwall’s free Community Carols on December 2. The hottest gifts this year are high-tech and comparatively low cost. Paula Lepore Burrough provides her top picks

T

he holiday season is really all about family time, eating lots of delicious food, partying and/ or celebrating the birth of someone special, right? But no matter how or why you celebrate Xmas, it seems that gift giving is part of the tradition. This year, why not stay on trend and give someone you love a really great gizmo? The latest offerings range from the perfectly practical to the purely fun, and will allow your loved one to keep up with the hottest technological advancements. Let’s take a look at what December 2011 has to offer the tech enthusiast you know. 1 Parrot AR Drone This augmented reality flying game has to be my top pick for 2011. It’s a remote-controlled helicopter that generates its own wi-fi hotspot and is controlled with an iphone, ipad or itouch. You can stream live video to your device from the built-in cameras, and display the game over the live feed. You take off and land with an easy screen tap, moving the drone requires a tilt in the corresponding direction, and a control wheel on the phone’s screen makes it rotate. Made of a lightweight material yet still robust, the Parrot AR Drone comes with an indoor and outdoor hull design.

2 Lytros Camera Light-field research is now found in a consumer camera which is certain to revolutionise the world of photography. Essentially, the Lytros Camera can capture various angles of light. The benefit is that after you have taken a shot, you can change the focal point of your image. That ‘technically’ means you go back in time to retake the picture the way you meant it to be shot. The camera takes a photo quickly for no lagging, which means the processor has some serious super power. The bonus is that the Lytros Camera travels light. There is no need to fuss with dials or to be a pro to take professionallooking photos.

3 OtterBox Covers The OtterBox design has been made to withstand tough treatment. This cover can protect a pricey Apple device, Blackberry, Dell, Samsung, LG, Sony, Nokia or Motorola phone from an accidental crash landing. There are four protective series to choose from in plenty of cool colours. Rather than taking out an extended warranty package, which would probably only cover a few minor mishaps with your device, the OtterBox is most likely the better investment.Vince M Black, a US-based OtterBox fan recently tweeted, “Wrecked my bike. Broke my finger and got several puncture wounds. My phone is fine.”

4 Kindle Fire Amazon’s Kindle Fire has a dual-core processor and new functions which make it a great gift. Amazon Silk ensures ultra-fast web browsing, plus access to 18 million movies, songs, magazines and books, and thousands of games and apps using android technology. There’s also unlimited instant streaming of over 10 million movies and TV shows. The Kindle Fire has an 80-hour battery life, wi-fi connectivity, a 7-inch vibrant colour touchscreen with an extra-wide viewing angle and can run Adobe Flash. With free cloud storage for all your Amazon content, 8GB of hard space should be more than sufficient.

For sleek modernity, the total antithesis of the Sacher Hotel is the new and wildly artistic Sofitel Stephansdom. On the other side of the graffitied Donau Kanal banks, this uber-modern hotel shines out into the night, with Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist’s video-art ceilings catching the eye from afar. Rooms here buck the historic trend and explore a monochromatic idea – some entirely in white, some in shades of grey and three blacked out, save for your white robe. Le Loft restaurant on the top floor, basking under another video-clip ceiling, gives great views over the city and its Roman-Gothic landmark St Stephans’ Cathedral, while you enjoy French-Austrian fine dining.

How to get there: There are no direct flights from Hong Kong to Vienna, so your best option is to choose another European city you’d like to stopover at and make a round trip of it. Visa: For a stay of less than 90 days in Austria, an EU country, few passport holders, including those from Hong Kong, Europe or the US, need a visa. For more information, visit the Consulate General of Austria in Hong Kong, at www.bmeia.gv.at/en. Best time to go: For Christmas, arrive a few days early as the seasonal markets close down at lunchtime on Christmas Eve. Only a few rogue shops, coffeehouses and bars stay open December 25-26, as the Austrians retreat into their homes to celebrate the family festival.

P

icture the scene: it’s just after lunch, two days into your eagerly awaited beach holiday in Thailand. You’re swinging easefully in a hammock, sipping at something sweet that may or may not have

Sangsom in it, and you’re finally unwinding. “Mum!” a little voice yells in your ear. “Mum! Can we do something, please?! I’m so bored!” If this sounds familiar, you’ll already have realised that classic bucket-and-spade holidays don’t really do it for kids, not for days on end, and not if they are away from their friends. The solution? Avoid desert-island-style resorts, and head somewhere the kids can get entertained while you get away from it all. Thipkesoru Arooutua, age 13, at Samui Bungy

Like Phuket before it, Koh Samui, off Thailand’s south-west coast, is branching out and becoming increasingly kidorientated, with loads of action-packed activities for tiny tourists (and their parents) to enjoy. Here are my top 12.

Exploring the interior In a Samui-style cable ride, you glide from tree-house to tree-house approximately 20 metres above the ground, taking in spectacular mountain, ocean and waterfall views as you go. Trained staff ensure the highest safety levels and you can choose whether to free-fall dramatically or glide at a more leisurely pace. Two of the best jungle coasters are provided by Canopy Adventures and Namuang Safari Park

Samui Go-Kart – for kids

in the south of the island. For an off-road 4-by-4 experience, try the full-day tour by Jungle Safari which rocks you over four mountain peaks. The Namuang Jungle Trip, starting in Ban Thurian, is also worth a look as aside from the elephant trekking and sightseeing it gives you the opportunity to head out on quad bikes. Elephant rides are available all over the island and one of the best is at Namuang Safari Park. You take a ride through the jungle, feeding the elephant bananas as you go. A mahout leads the way and doubles as a photographer. After the trek you may want to avoid the show, where elephants paint, dance and play football – and instead take a dip in the nearby waterfall.

You can ramble through the gardens and walk the trails among coconut palms, rubber trees and orchids. Or simply relax in the infinity pool which enjoys amazing views. Kids love to pet the animals (ponies, deer, goats and monkeys) and visit the aviaries. You see there’s plenty to do on an island getaway when the kids want to take a well-earned break from the beach!

Seasonal tradition The Hong Kong Ballet celebrates the 15th anniversary of The Nutcracker this month, with live accompaniment by The Hong Kong Sinfonietta – always a performance that entertains, and a splendid idea for a family treat. For those not familiar with the story, it starts with young girl Clara at a Christmas Eve party, as she receives a nutcracker puppet as a gift. Later that night she sneaks downstairs, to find herself in the surreal company of the family Christmas tree which has grown to an enormous height, and a male child houseguest who has transformed into the Nutcracker Prince. This new section of the Sunny Bay theme park takes its cues from the three animated features released to date. Among the new rides, look out for the interactive performance Toy Soldier Boot Camp, which recruits visitors as ‘new soldiers’ in a playtime experience. Characters Woody and Jessie are permanently around to meet park-goers. If you’re thinking of checking this out, December also features a number of Christmasthemed specials, such as Santa Mickey’s Toy-riffic Street Party, where classic Christmas toys come to life, dancing down the snowy (snow machine-aided) Main Street USA. As night falls and the Christmas illuminations are lit, Mickey and co. ride into Main Street on an elegant sleigh. For more information call 1830830, or visit www.hongkongdisneyland.com.

Drink me! Fun for foodies Pretty new to Hong Kong and an elegant addition to the winter home cellar is Brancott Estate’s pinot noir from New Zealand. Much has been made of the country’s Marlborough sauvignon blanc vineyards, while some excellent pinot noir from this region gets less attention. This particular bottling – Terraces T Pinot Noir 2009 – is a great ambassador: leading with ripe cherry and plum on the palate; typically for this grape type, a little translucent, it still has plenty of body. New to our shores, it is the seventh vintage release – which only happens in years of good harvest. Its pronounced fruit and silky tannins make it great by itself. It would go down well with turkey and all the trimmings, as well as some stronger flavours and red meat. Available at Wellcome, priced at HKD268.

A special one-off holiday gingerbread house and cookie decorating class with executive pastry chef of InterContinental Hong Kong hotel, Cyril Dupuis, is being held on December 11. Over two hours, from 10.30am-12.30pm, white-aproned participants receive a homemade gingerbread house and cookies to decorate with festive treats, candy and sweetmeats and then personalise with decorative icing. Chef Cyril discusses participants’ plans over freshly baked pastries with tea, coffee and hot chocolate, before the decorating session begins. The class ends in style – with a buffet lunch including a glass of Perrier Jouet Champagne at Harbourside Restaurant, and the personalised gingerbread house and cookies are packed into a gift box. The price: HKD1,288; reservations: 2313 2323.

take it to the limit

What do you do if your mum is diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease? Well you move (or at least climb) mountains of course. We talk to DB resident Carol Keen Other than mentioning that her “bladder tube froze solid” two hours into the final hike, Keen plays down the gruelling nature of the climb, and the disappointment felt by the team when two of their number were forced to drop out. Instead she mentions that the (57) porters sang traditional Swahili songs at the end of each day’s trek, and how much she “loved the last day’s 21-kilometre walk through volcanic ash, lush greenery, jungle areas and breathtaking scenery and wildlife”. Keen’s climb was organised by Parkinson's UK. Since Carol Keen on the roof of Africa – and her certificate to prove it
