I love the floats, flowers and fiesta-feel of a good Lunar New Year, and this month I’m looking forward to attending all the local CNY events. In the lead-up to the holidays, on February 6, be sure to check out the dragon dancing (and art on show) at the Discovery Fair. (For a full report on Discovery College’s annual Arts Fest, turn to the back page.) This issue we reveal what the Year of the Snake is likely to bring. According to both DB feng-shui expert Jill Lander and DB life coach Tali Weiss, we are headed for a year of lightning bolt life changes. In celebrating Hong Kong, and its ancient customs, we also feature a few cultural courses (think tea ceremonies and tai chi), put on for tourists, that are just the ticket for resident gweilos too. Talking about long-term expats, this issue we feature Tom Read – the internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter who grew up in Hong Kong and now lives in DB. Those of you who are into interior design
will also enjoy our tour of super-talented designer Cynthia Lie-Breit’s DB home. As always, this issue is bursting with high achievers, not least DB teens Saya Kawano and Natasha Christensen, whose all-round talents astound. This month too, sees the submission deadline of The Word, our young writers' competition. So I’d like to remind all you local secondary-school students to get scribbling – and send your stories to info@arounddb.com by February 23. We look forward to posting the top three at www.arounddb.com. Kung Hei Fat Choy!

DMR dance scholarships delight Photo courtesy of DMR
Last month, DMR School of Ballet (DMR) awarded scholarships to seven talented students: Lea Mahoudeau, Anna McMaster, Emi Kingan, Valerie Cornet, Michelle Smith, and (not pictured) Kiki Kurosawa and Rachel Telford. These grants include free dance classes; weekly sessions at Iso Fit in Central; a stipend for dance wear; field trips and tickets to see cultural performances; and free participation in the school's show team. One of the recipient’s mothers told us how pleased she is “that a dance school in DB has instituted a scholarship programme, and is giving back to the community. The scholarship will give all students something to aspire to, and give the recipients a sense of responsibility.” You can call DMR on 2987 4338.

focuses on sharks The fifth annual Discovery College Arts Fest, February 2 to 8, involves students in exciting art-related activities and workshops. Fantastic community events in the line-up this year are the comedy night with three ageappropriate shows on February 2, a cello performance on February 3, and a performance of Alice in Wonderland on February 4. There’s also the Discovery Fair, where local artists show their work, on February 6; and an online auction of collaborative art produced by students. To find out more, turn to this month’s DB Moments.
Marine conservationist, photographer and part-owner of Hemingway’s, Gary Stokes became internationally famous last month when his photos of shark fins drying on a rooftop in Sheung Wan hit the news worldwide. Not quite how the world imagines this perceived luxury product being handled! Great timing as Gary’s online petition asking for greater protection for sharks from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the Hong Kong and Singapore governments is quickly gaining momentum ahead of the March CITES conference in Thailand. Check out the Sea Shepherd Hong Kong Facebook Page for more information.

The tennis community said a fond farewell to Gregory Stevenson, better known as Stevo, and his family when they left Hong Kong last month. The head Discovery Bay Recreation Club (DBRC) tennis coach had made DB his home for many years, and told us how much he has enjoyed the diversity of the people, the uniqueness of the location, and working with Paul Summerside and John Weston. Now headed to Australia, Stevo will remember DB best as the place where he met his wife Jackie, and created a home for his children Rebekah and Zack.

international call costs
A new app conceived by DB resident Philippe Joly, launched last month, will have you calling landlines and mobiles all over the world at really cheap rates. All you have to do is download Yelo from the Apple app store or Google Play and create your account; then you are ready to make calls for as little as HK$0.07/ minute. When you download the app you have approximately HK$20-worth of courtesy credits so you can use it straight away. Although there are many inexpensive ways to call landlines overseas, Yelo’s advantage is its very competitive prices for calling mobiles overseas. Find out more at www.yeloworld.com.

Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) celebrated its thirtieth anniversary on January 24. There were cupcakes for all students on the day! It’s incredible to think that the school started out with three staff and just a few students back in 1983 – and that Connie Ting (pictured), one of the three original staff members is office manager to this day! DBIS now boasts secondary and primary schools, plus a kindergarten, each with its own dedicated building, and there are over 900 students.

acinta Read is an avid twitter user, so I get to keep up with what is happening in the life of the family. She moved to DB in 2008 with Tom, the Christmas before their first child Layla was born. I first met the couple a decade ago through The Vine, a dynamic interdenominational church, now located in Wanchai. Jacinta is remarkably witty with her tweets and hashtags. You might know her as the Handmade Hong Kong lady who operates the DB Backyard Bazaar and Farmers’ Market. Late last year, she sent a tweet suggesting that her husband’s newly released album could reach No. 1 on the Hong Kong iTunes chart. Interested, I went to the iTunes store and purchased a copy of Tom Read’s first album, Compass. Within a few days, the album did indeed hit iTunes’ No. 1.
words and hates lazy or overused lyrics. “I’m always asking myself if there is a better or more interesting way to express what I want to say,” he explains. Note that Compass is a collection of 10 original songs. Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep is Tom’s favourite track on the album. The song, based on a poem written in 1932 by Mary Elizabeth Frye, has powerful and uplifting lyrics. “I purposely tried to offset the serious and heavy subject of death, with light and positive music. It is a contrast, but I think it works,” he says. The song also has a fun and quirky video that has over 22,000 YouTube views.
Without a budget for the video, Tom teamed up with his friend William Ng to come up with something creative. William had the idea of spinning the camera around and pulling things in and out, and they took it from there. Don’t fence me in They steered away from any obvious Childhood sweethearts, references to graves – and built on the Tom Read describes his music as Tom and Jacinta in DB upbeat music instead. The video is one “organic”. When recording Compass with continuous take with no edits, so they had to the UK label Kingsway in 2011, he wanted to plan and practise extensively beforehand to get it keep it natural, so he avoided using electronic right. Tom has been heartened by the number of people sounds like loops or samples – even electric guitars were who responded so positively to it and shared it online. kept to a minimum. Chirpy, uplifting and well-crafted, the album is mostly inspired by his faith and how that relates to his daily life. Bringing it all back home Tom listens to a lot of singer-songwriters such as James Vincent McMorrow, Bon Iver and Mat Kearney. He is a Coldplay fan and his all-time favourite album is O by Damien Rice. He feels these artists have influenced him and are reflected in his music. When asked to classify his sound, Tom, who for the past 10 years has worked at The Vine as the worship and creative director, says, “I personally don't like labelling music in genres because I feel it's really restrictive. For example, my album is labelled religious on iTunes which doesn't say anything about how the music sounds and will immediately put a lot of people off. But I think if your music sounds good, people will want to listen to it regardless of how it's labelled.” First and foremost, Tom is a melody person. He finds that tunes come much easier to him than lyrics. Normally, he’ll have the music written first, then labour for ages (even years) over the phrasing. He is picky when it comes to

Tom began song writing in his late teens but acknowledges that all this success could not have happened without Jacinta. Early on, the couple made the decision to try their best to support each other’s dreams and passions. A proud Jacinta says, “Tom's made music that holds its own in churches and at non-religious venues alike. I'm super biased but off the top of my head I can't think of many artists like that.” Tom was born in Watford, near London but his family moved to Hong Kong in the 1980s. His father, Tony, worked as an engineer for Arup and still lives in Hong Kong, affiliated with The Vine as a founding pastor. Jacinta is also from Hong Kong, so this is really home for the young family of four. The couple met at Island School, but their relationship blossomed slightly later at the Saturday Night Alive youth group (now called Flight 852) at The Vine. own children. Raising kids in the middle of Causeway Bay did not appeal to them. “I guess there are two options,” Tom says, “either you leave Hong Kong and move somewhere where it’s quieter, greener and great for kids, or else you try and find somewhere like that in Hong Kong.” The Read family loves this neck of the woods, having picnics in Siena Park or coffee in the plaza – though Tom admits that there are moments when he misses having a car or taking a latenight taxi home.
out. These days, he is pickier (and rightly so) about his performances. If you happened to attend Clockenflap in December, you will have seen Tom on the Pigeon Stage. One day soon, you might catch him playing an acoustic set at a Handmade Hong Kong event, showing support for his wife.
We are family Life for Tom feels the same as before the album came out. But he admits seeing Compass top the iTunes chart was an amazing experience. “It’s rare to see an album go to No. 1 that’s not by either an international artist or a Canto-pop star.” Tom is appreciative of his fans and that so many got behind the album to get it to the top. He loves having the opportunity to play music every week at his church with some incredible musicians. A young 33-year-old, Tom helps to create that dynamic Vine vibe with his creativity and musical talent. Tom played in a band called Uncle Joe for a number of years but found that performing all over the city burnt him

ong-time gweilo may continually question whether they are expats or immigrants, but anyone who has been here a decade or more (or feels like they have) can’t be accused of trying to make a quick buck. We work hard to play hard, don’t we? We love dim sum and have learnt to stomach moon cakes. We dragon boat, enjoy the fireworks on July 1 and know which flowers to buy at Chinese New Year. But there’s always more to discover about the deep-seated cultural traditions of the city that has been so good to us. Hong Kong’s culture was not disrupted by the Communist Revolution, and having been preserved in the 1950s, it flourishes to this day. So what's a good in for expat residents, permanent or otherwise? My advice: head out and see the city as you’ve never seen it before – like a tourist! All you need is your passport, a camera, map, and the Hong Kong Tourist Bureau (HKTB) pamphlet Cultural Kaleidoscope in hand.
Chinese tea ceremony What the pamphlet says: “A Chinese teacup may look small, but it holds a great deal more than just tea and water. Throughout the class you’ll be introduced to the many varieties of tea, its proper preparation and tea-drinking etiquette. Overall, find out for yourself why the ancient

saying holds true: ‘Life is like tea. The longer it steeps, the richer it becomes.’” The verdict: I loved this intimate class at the Lock Cha Tea Shop in Hong Kong Park, shared with six tourists. We are invited to sniff, pour and roll so much tea around on our tongues, I feel like a teetotal sommelier. As for the Chinese proverb about life being like tea, it’s more like: ‘The longer it steeps, the more bitterness you experience’. I love my Yorkshire Gold, but this class made me want to buy a brick of rare Teiguanyin! Outcome: Feeling contemplative. This pause refreshed – and educated.
Tai chi for beginners What the pamphlet says: “William Ng and Pandora Wu are two of Hong Kong’s best-known masters of tai chi, having both practised it for many years. Since 2000, they’ve been helping to make the healthy and beguiling art of tai chi easily accessible to Hong Kong’s visitors through this popular class.” The verdict: Arriving at the sculpture garden at the Tsim Sha Tsui harbourfront boardwalk, I am given a paper entitled Tai Chi Chuan in Eight Forms to peruse before we are instructed

to assume the commencing form. We attempt some of the classic poses: ‘parting the horse’s mane’, ‘waving hand in clouds’, ‘grasping the bird’s tail’. My balance is the worst of the lot! But after several tries, we practise the routine to lilting music, and I am starting to ‘feel like water’. Outcome: Feeling proud. Forget yoga! Luckily, the instructors are going to start private classes for a small band of resident enthusiasts.

Mongkok. Mr Yu’s class is delivered with unique humour, much appreciated, and over the hour we are offered a detailed explanation of the Taoist concept of yin/ yang: these two cosmic energies are in constant opposition but when combined as a whole constitute perfect harmony. He then shows us, with floor plans, star charts and a compass (no need to buy an expensive lo pan, he says, the only difference is price) how to apply this to interior design. Outcome: Feeling vindicated. Feng shui is not metaphysical claptrap – it is good old common sense.
Feng shui philosophy What the pamphlet says: “The concept of feng shui has had a firm hand in shaping the development of Chinese culture for thousands of years. Literally meaning wind and water, the ancient practice of positioning objects and buildings in harmony with nature is believed to ensure good fortune and a happy life.” The verdict: After showing my passport at the HKTB, I was able to sign up for a feng shui introductory session at geomancer Alex Yu’s office across from Langham Place in

Martial arts master class What the pamphlet says: “Chinese martial arts incorporate a wide range of styles and utilise many different weapons in their distinctive routines, making these demonstrations both educational and enjoyable. Following the performances, members of the public are invited to try out their skills.” The verdict: I am a diehard Bruce Lee fan, so I have been looking forward to this class, held at Kowloon Park. techniques demonstrated are impressive, and afterwards the instructors lead us through some typical kung fu movements. I am so motivated by the experience that I head down to Avenue of Stars at the waterside promenade in Tsim Sha Tsui afterwards to commune with Bruce, and check out the handprints of the one and only Jackie Chan. Outcome: Feeling inspired. Martial arts aren’t just combat practice – they are practised for a variety of reasons, including mental, physical and spiritual development.
Researching a revolution What the pamphlet says: “As one of the greatest revolutionaries of modern China, Dr Sun Yat-sen is renowned for being the person to lead China from a monarchy into a republic in 1911. Dr Sun’s revolutionary ideologies were shaped while he was receiving his early education in Hong Kong, and this guided tour takes you through his life and times in the city.” The verdict: While in Mid-Levels, I make my way to the Sun Yat-sen Museum, a stone’s throw from the escalator. The four floors of exhibits, videos and photographs will delight history buffs, and it is a convenient way to get a general understanding of China’s place in the world during Dr Sun’s
time. The man certainly had a most remarkable political career – being considered the founding father of not one, but two countries. After viewing the exhibits, you begin to understand the sad irony of this fact: Sun Yat-sen died in 1925, at the age of 59, convinced that his dream of a unified China would never be fulfilled. Mao proved him wrong in 1949, but this resulted in Sun’s political successor Chiang Kai-shek pulling up sticks to Taiwan. Outcome: Feeling nostalgic. Bring back Sun Yat-sen! The Cultural Kaleidoscope programme also includes a Cantonese opera appreciation class; a cake-making class; harbour cruises on the Duk Ling, the last authentic Chinese sailing junk in Hong Kong; and a Hong Kong Story Exhibition guided tour. Check it out for yourself – you never know where the journey will take you.

e are familiar with the term Renaissance Man: someone proficient in a range of fields. We know that Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci were quintessential Renaissance Men, thanks to Giorgio Vasari, who penned the term Renaissance in his best-known work, The Lives of the Artists, published in the mid-16th century. He chronicled the rivalry of these legendary artist/ writer/ scientists. So today I am thrilled to spend time with two modern-day Renaissance Girls, remarkable for their depth-of-knowledge and the breadth of their achievements. And with a playful nod to any perceived rivalries that may exist here at the resort, Around DB has invited them for a joint photo-shoot to accompany a chat about the tough choices they must make heading into their final years of school.
While slowly but surely leading a nation to democracy? Role-modelling is in the eye of the beholder, anyway – and behold! In these pages, Radhika has created a visual chronicle of the girls doing just that.
Goals and aspirations And what about the grades? Natasha is working towards an impressive final result. Her report shows an inclination towards the arts and English – a lucky break, given that she aspires to Broadway. “It is a very difficult career path I have chosen,” she says, “but I am willing to work hard and my parents are very supportive.” At her parent’s urging, Natasha has chosen PE-teaching as a back-up plan. “My PE teacher, Mr Corbett believes in me and pushes me,” she
Saya Kawano, 15, is in Year 11 at Discovery College (DC) and an Island Dance student. Natasha Christensen, 14, is in Year 10 at Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) and a student of the DMR School of Ballet. Aptly our awardwinning photographer is 17-year-old DB resident Radhika Gidwani, a recent Island School graduate – and something of a Renaissance Girl herself.
All-round achievements For openers, Natasha and Saya list their recent achievements, and they are numerous. Saya is an award-winning dancer and gymnast, with a black belt in karate. She is also a singer, performing recently at YRock. She has designed and implemented a dance-related Student-led Cocurricular Activity at school, and co-captains the senior netball team. Natasha is an awardwinning gymnast, assisting Sportsmanship coach DBer Charles Chan. She is a DMR ballet dancer of distinction and top-tier triathlete. She has won the U18 DB Action Asia race, was DBIS Sports Girl in Year 8, and won the Spirit and English Awards in Year 9. She’s got modelling and movieacting chops, too, and a major role in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the DBIS spring production. Natasha and Saya are excellent role models on many levels. But don’t tell them that; the suggestion throws them. They live life to express, not to impress; they work for a cause, not for applause – all those Facebook aphorisms. Besides, role models don’t go around thinking they’re role models. Did Aung San Suu Kyi spend time thinking that while playing piano and knitting sweaters during her years of house-arrest?

Incidentally, our photographer Radhika, is also a multitalented high flyer, drawn to the performing arts. She ended her high-school career with an Outstanding Student Of The Year award from English Schools Foundation (ESF) for her Year 12 and 13 Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) results, and she won ESF’s Chairman's Award For Excellence in 2012 in recognition of her outstanding performance at an ESF school. Radhika also recently received an Honourable Mention in Hong Kong’s Savannah College of Art and Design photography competition. Now on her gap year, Radhika has launched Photosdb.net, an exciting new DB photography studio, with her equally talented photographer-father Baljit Gidwani. She is also working as a classroom assistant at DBIS, and plans to study primary education in the UK next year.

You are the complete package. And this of course extends to life after secondary school.

explains. “I wouldn’t mind being as cool as him!” But right now, Natasha must consider the idea of going to boarding school to pursue her dream of the stage. “This is quite a hard choice because moving to England means that I will not be with my family and friends,” she says. As for Saya, her post-secondary aspirations are tilted towards dance, but on her parents' advisement she is keeping her options open for possible business/ finance studies in San Francisco or Boston. Has this been influenced by the fact that she is already working as a professional dancer, and has learnt to invest her pay-packet wisely? No, it has more to do with Mathematics being the love of her academic life – alongside History and Spanish.

To help you make those inevitable choices, best-selling author, Rhodes Scholar (and Caltech admissions committee member), Joe Jewell offers this advice in his short online essay The Myth of the Well-Rounded Student. ‘Let your best qualities shine through by doing the things that coincide most closely with what you enjoy. Ignore people who say colleges prefer that you express your good personal qualities through specific activities, for example sports and community service. I promise, they speak nonsense. In the end, a student with passionate interests, even if they are somewhat off the beaten path – in fact, especially if they are somewhat off the beaten path – is truly the hot commodity in college admissions.’ Joe adds, however, an important caveat. ‘Beware of overload, especially if it might hurt academic achievement: aside from a few recruited athletes, even the best extracurricular activities will never trump a poor academic record and/ or low test scores.’ Go to www.prepme.com for the full essay and other information.

All this spells Energy. You need to be more than physically fit to be able to do all this; you need a mind and a spirit – and of course a supportive family – that is willing to go the distance, too. And being a Renaissance Girl means more than just having a wide-ranging list of accomplishments to your credit. The question is: what are you going to do with it? That long list is not an end in itself. It’s about applying the skills and knowledge somehow. It’s about making quantum leaps of thought! It’s about interdisciplinarity! That’s where the breakthrough, the transformation, the genius come in. Call it the da Vinci Effect. Art history scholars believe that Vasari’s major objective in his biographies was to provide models of moral behaviour; to teach [people] how to live and make them prudent. What are Saya, Natasha and Radhika going to bring to the table at which da Vinci and Michelangelo now sit alongside the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Bruce Lee? It’s not a fair question of course, in their case. It’s too early to say. But, to borrow the words of every girl’s current favourite pop-singer, Natasha Beddingfield, one is never too young to start ‘living life with arms wide open... The rest is still unwritten.’

here are plenty of legends surrounding the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and how they were chosen. Many folktales suggest that the Jade Emperor simply called all the animals to a meeting to see which 12 arrived first. The Rat uses its intelligence and agility to win on the day, with the Ox using its strength to come in second. The Horse is pipped to sixth place by the Snake, who appears out of nowhere, startling the Horse and forcing him to fall back in line.

So what does this say about 2013, the Year of the Snake? According to DB-based feng-shui expert Jill Lander, success depends on attention to detail. “Focus and discipline will be necessary for you to achieve what you set out to create, she says. Added to which, the Snake has a sneaky energy that can be used to your advantage. Look for holes in the loop. The Snake is reputedly the most cunning and enigmatic of animals. Few creatures have inspired such rich symbolism,

devotion and fear across so many different cultures. “The Snake has the ability not to get caught,” Jill notes. “He is into self-protection; he is undercover yet able to observe!”
and not knowing what to do, it is important to take a breather and shut off all worries. Reflecting and meditating is a good habit to develop.”
The Snake needs to feel safe and secure to utilise its special analytical skills. “This is the year to create a secure workplace, and make headway in slow and methodical ways. Things will definitely be accomplished as you focus forward,” explains DB life coach Tali Weiss.
As the snake is extra sensitive to the movements of the earth, you need to be in tune with your surroundings in 2013, silencing the chaos of the mind. Some of the best things in life are discovered when we pause to reflect on our journey. And there is an incredible potential for self-discovery this year.
Harnessing the Snake energy
This excites Tali more than anything because through selfdiscovery, we can achieve what the Snake really represents which is renewal. This requires opening yourself up to new ways of thinking and feeling. Tali notes that being sceptical is great when it stimulates your curiosity to learn, experience and explore new ideas and beliefs. There is a downside to scepticism though, when it’s tainted with cynicism. Instead of opening up the mind, cynicism blocks it with preconceived notions and ideas.
Ancient Chinese wisdom says a snake in the house is a good omen because it means your family will not starve. Fortuitously, 2013 is the Year of the Water Snake and in fengshui circles, water means wealth. So happy days! A newfound ambition may inspire you to be all you can be, and provide you with the follow through to achieve your goals and take responsibility. But talking money, Jill advises caution. “In 2013, planning for the future is of the utmost importance.” This year too, you are likely to feel you are on shaky ground – not quite settled. The Snake likes to shake us out of false realities with sudden shocks – lightning bolt life changes can occur. Drawing on this characteristic, Jill predicts that a dominant volcano may erupt in 2013 causing devastation. There are other attributes of the Snake that we would be wise to pick up on. “The Snake Year symbolises the opportunity to change, transform and renew ourselves,” says Jill. “Be like a Snake and shed old habits and undesirable behaviours.” A snake undergoes a difficult process before removing its skin – he needs to rub against hard rocks and rough surfaces to grow. “You need to leave a part of yourself behind if you really want to change,” Tali notes. “It’s important to consider the rocks you encounter in life not as obstacles but as tools that will help you shed that extra weight.” Think too of a snake basking in the sunlight, motionless on the ground. It is absorbing everything around it, present in the moment. “We can do the same by slowing down and paying attention,” says Tali. “When we find our minds racing
Find more topical local topics
“There is always choice, and lots of options to choose from,” Tali says. “A treasure trove of ideas awaits anyone open enough to learn about them. This is crucial in attaining one’s goals for the year and subsequent years to come.” Deep transformation and healing are represented by the Snake. Moreover there is a deep revealing of subconscious material in a Snake Year. We begin to see the reasons for things; we understand the root cause of some dysfunction. Just like a snake, slowly we shed our skin. We become shiny and new as we acknowledge and release the past. A great deal of quiet progress can be made in 2013 – slow and just a little bit sneaky wins the race.

lucky 13? Close monitoring of global markets – and events – essential (www.msnbc.msn.com)
This year, investors are faced with the same problem they have had since the bottom of the credit crisis in March 2009. To invest or not to invest, that is the question. Alex Walker reports
M
ost people agree that you need nerves of steel and a solid resolve to invest in the economic environment that we live in today. With the constant barrage of news and media noise that we are exposed to via our mobile devices, the TV and the press, it can be hard to differentiate between important market events and idle market chatter. Investing in the ‘new normal’ that we have become accustomed to over the years, requires us to do our due diligence and manage our wealth and assets as prudently as possible. The days
of blindly investing into the latest hot tip or investment fad are for those who wish to depart from their money on a permanent basis.
Bullish (and bearish) opportunities There are a number of assets or asset classes that are expected to perform well during 2013. Savvy investors will look to high-dividend blue-chip shares, and REITS with yields of 5%+ per annum. High yielding residential and

commercial property, particularly in the US and the UK, is also gaining momentum. Corporate, emerging and convertible bonds are a focus for investors this year, as are short-dated bonds providing 4%+ yields. Bullish currencies include GBP/ USD, EUR/ USD, CAD/ USD, NOK/ USD, EUR/ CHF and USD/ CHF. Alternative investments, which are often non-equity or bond linked, can help enhance the risk-adjusted return of a portfolio in ways that a traditional stock, bond and cash portfolio cannot achieve. The idea is that adding investments, such as gold and blue-chip art, will provide portfolio diversification and the potential for a more balanced portfolio return over time. Investors are also advised to focus on hard assets, due to the pending inflation, and non-directional investment strategies.
Equity market valuations
Assets or asset classes that are expected to perform poorly or trade sideways during 2013 include long-dated bonds, especially US 20-Year Treasuries; the broader Middle Eastern equity market; and the following currencies: AUD/ USD, USD/ RMB and NZD/ USD. Short-term trend-following investment strategies are also expected to falter given the lack of broad market trends that these strategies have relied on in the past.
Global events to monitor
More austerity in 2013
Investors need to pay close attention to key global events in the coming year, as we have seen these can have market-changing implications. How the US addresses its budgetary issue is key for both its own economy and the stability of global markets. We need to observe how China manages its leadership change, and its residential property market. And how the nineteenth South Korean presidential elections, and the thirteenth Malaysian general elections are interpreted by the broader market. The markets may also be affected by potential ‘Black Swan’ events that may occur unexpectedly during 2013. These include war or escalated tensions arising from Mali, Iraq, Israel and North Korea; terrorist events targeting major political hotspots; and further large-scale El Nino weather events. The China/ US strategic war over the Asian pie, and the ongoing currency war may escalate further. Looking to Europe, will Spain default on its debt obligations? Will we see the breakup of the Euro and/ or Greece departing the Euro? Closer to home, should we expect Hong Kong and Singapore asset bubbles?

MONEY MATTERS
Globally savvy investors will be on the watch for a sudden spike in interest rates to control inflation; a highfrequency algorithm causing another market flash crash; and an unexpected impact to the global agricultural production supply.
This is because developed countries have recently been expanding their global reach across international borders to try and capture additional tax revenue to support their governments’ dwindling coffers. The countries where this change has become most notable include the US, UK, France, Italy and Australia.
Austerity, taxes and planning John Maynard Keynes’ Animal Spirits economic theory – which holds that the human psyche drives the market economy – is a key element to stimulating an economy and getting it back on its feet. This ‘get up and go’ is a hard thing to stimulate in a person, let alone a nation. It will take a tremendous government stimulus to help inspire the average person to keep his chin up, send in his umpteenth job application and blindly spend money on retail purchases because it is good for the economy. With this in mind, it is expected that most of us will continue to live under selfimposed austerity conditions, until such time as we feel that the world is back to normal and there is less threat to our financial welfare. Most people are satisfied that a lot of major global boxes have been ticked to some degree during 2012 and now look forward to 2013 where they can take a breather, be thankful for what they have and try to plan their personal finances under the new normal. This said, further stimulus is expected and global growth will take several years to get back on track. It’s clear that 2013 won’t be a walk in the park, and investors will need to keep their wits about them. Who am I? KayeKaye Khemlani (PIBA No. 0032-009006), a native English-speaking insurance advisor, with a strong presence in Discovery Bay and Hong Kong.
My thoughts I understand we all go through different stages of life and so do our insurance needs. But the mandatory insurances required by the HK Government (including domestichelper insurance, house insurance, automobile coverage and life insurance), are always worth due diligence. This month, I want to wake you up to some things you may not have considered about your health insurance policies.
Health The different types of medical insurance available in Hong Kong are confusing, and the premiums vary tremendously. Here’s how to make sense of a four- tier medical system: 1. Government hospitals – you know how that works. 2. Lower tier insurance – basic coverage for those of you on a budget. This type of insurance is good for the self-employed and for non-travellers (limits can be really low for Europe, Australia and North America). It can be used at local private hospitals but may leave you short if any major surgery is needed. Be aware too that if you have a large claim your next premium will increase considerably. For outpatient claims, reimbursements are not so high especially if your doctor is in Central or DB. 3. Middle tier insurance – high local coverage that is also sufficient to cover outpatient claims and doctors’ bills in DB and Central. This type of insurance is typically for those at managerial level. It works for frequent travellers, even those heading to Europe, Australia and Canada but those travelling to the US will need a bit more protection. 4 Top-tier insurance – high-end cover for just about any hospital, anywhere in the world. This type of insurance provides all kinds of benefits, including private rooms, and free delivery for pregnant women. Top-tier insurance is popular with senior executives, independently wealthy people and women who want kids.
My offer: These are oversimplified concepts and different people have different budgets. I can do a comparison shop for you free of charge, to ensure that you have made the right choice and check that you have the right product at the right price.

Catharine Nicol gets lost in Lijiang’s cobbled streets and canal paths, soaking up an old-world China
O
ld China with a new energy, Lijiang’s Old Quarter finds its beauty in the ancient architecture, the shop houses lining cobbled streets and the red lanterns reflecting in the myriad of canals that lead from the Jade River. A UNESCO World Heritage site, nicknamed Venice of the Orient, its history dates back over eight centuries, and while in the past its trade relied on the traffic passing dustily along the old Tea Horse Road, today its successful preservation brings clouds of tourists. The locals here are the Naxi people, one of the 56 ethnic groups recognised by China, indigenous to the northwest of Yunnan and the south-west of Sichuan. They live a culture influenced by Tibetan and Confucian roots, with a colourful native dress and their own script pictographs that make you think of Egypt. Many of the ancient scrolls that still exist were written by the Dongbas (religious men) and

used to accompany shamanistic ceremonies. According to explorer Joseph Rock, who lived in Yunnan from 1920-40 while working for National Geographic, the scrolls “used to take a skilled Dongba six months to make while in a trance”. Joseph was a fan of the style, which he called humorous, childlike and artistic.
Things to do The best thing to do in Lijiang is get lost. The main streets’ buildings, beautiful as they are, cater almost exclusively to tourists, transformed into shops, cafés and restaurants, inns and hotels. But pass over a few of the humpbacked bridges, turn right and left randomly here and there, and the buzz of the crowd starts to fade. This is where you’ll find yourself strolling past homes, local businesses and tiny convenience stores (no 7-11s in sight). Children run past,

caught up in some exciting game, shouting and laughing. Grandparents take their time getting through the chores of the day, clucking indulgently at their small charges whose parents are busy bringing in international dollars. The old town is least busy in the morning, which is a great time to stroll the streets, while in the afternoon the pace picks up considerably. In the evening Naxi women gather in the main square Si Fang Jie and treat the crowds, and themselves, to some local dancing. Apart from shopping for Naxi textiles and wooden carvings, yak-horn items, art using the local hieroglyphs, homemade paper and books, embroidery, clothes and antiques, you’ll be tempted to head out to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which peaks above the roofs of the town every now and then. There’s a cable car to the top for a great view of the
surrounding countryside and Lijiang itself. However if you don’t have time to trek out there, you can take in one of the most famous views in China (of the peak itself) from Black Dragon Pool’s bridge, which is an easy walk along the canal path from the Water Wheel. At the foot of Jade Snow Mountain, the open-air Impression Lijiang cultural show by film director Zhang Yimou is highly recommended.
Eat, drink and sleep it off When it’s time to eat in Lijiang, Naxi food is one of the three main Chinese offerings, next to Sichuan and Tibetan. The baba flatbread, deep-fried cheese, yak meat and yak’s milk yoghurt will take your taste buds off the beaten track – try Qiuyuege Restaurant or Lijiang Gulou Restaurant both on Xinhua Street, or Lamu on Xin Yi Jie. the north of town also get good reviews. In the old town, there are also wonderful hot-pot restaurants, others serving Yunnan dishes (try Maya Café), and of course plenty of western cafés, with Papillon Rouge and Prague Café the best known. But while the food is important, the restaurants on the canals are the ones that fill up first, especially at night with the romantic/ bordello lanes glowing in the red light. There are plenty of charming bars in which to while the evening away too. Crossing the canals and losing yourself in the web of lanes, you’ll1 round a corner and come across a bar DB_living_21Jan2013_OP.pdf 21/1/13 3:27 PM

with a first-floor balcony perfect for a quiet drink. If you want a little action, Bar Street’s cacophony of taverns, hammers to the sound of tipsy drinkers bashing their wooden tables with blocks, in time to the music – more or less. While there are several charming looking inns of varying quality, remember to be patient with the level of English spoken, breakfast served and information shared. Old homes built around courtyards are romantic to look at, but in winter the tiny rooms can be bitterly cold, although the traditional thermos of hot water helps considerably.

How to get there China Eastern Airlines via Kunming, and Shanghai Airlines via Shanghai Pudong Airport fly to Lijiang.
Nearby attractions While Lijiang is a great base for a few days, nearby Shuhe has a smaller, quieter old town, with canals, restaurants, cafés, shops and crowds in far less alarming numbers. However increasing amounts of construction is rather a worry for its future. Stay with the friendly owners of Nomad Guesthouse, and get up early to walk to the Buddhist temple on a hillside Après ski at Gyu with great views across town.

For the kind of service you are used to, stay in style at the Banyan Tree Lijiang – a cluster of old indigenous houses a little out of town, with the kind of luxury and eco-credentials you’d expect. Closer to the old town is the new Crowne Plaza Lijiang, a stylish hotel where the villas look out over Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. And a more recent addition is the Pullman Lijiang Resort & Spa with a beautiful Mandara Spa. Old China with a new energy.

For a couple of days relatively strenuous hike, jump on a bus to the start of the path leading through Tiger Leaping Gorge. Climbing high above the Jade River, switchback corners open out to stupendous views. Guesthouses make for charming stops along the way – like Halfway House, Forest Inn and Five Fingers – and once you’ve reached Tina’s Guesthouse, you can choose to continue on towards Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian) and its famous monastery, or return to Lijiang. The DB Pirates now fields four women’s teams and two youth teams
goal attack Fast, focused, fun and sometimes furious, netball is a big deal to many ladies in DB. Megaen Kelly finds out why
W
hen people think of ball games, sports such as basketball, football or rugby are probably the ones that spring most readily to mind. Played globally by both men and women, these sports are however predominately male activities. So it is refreshing to come across netball, a sport that is the opposite of these testosterone-driven games. Played by more women than men, it is both highly competitive and hugely popular. Netball is particularly big in Commonwealth countries, so it should come as no surprise to learn that Hong Kong,
as a former member, has a flourishing netball culture. In fact, according to Lorraine Pak of the Hong Kong Netball Association (HKNA), “There are approximately 1,200 people playing netball at various levels, and the Hong Kong Netball League runs from October to April every year. Currently the HKNA is running the Schools Netball Promotion Programme which focuses on promoting the sport in secondary schools.” In Discovery Bay, the DB Pirates fields four women’s teams, double that of when it started nearly two decades ago. And this year the club added two youth teams – U13 and U19 – to the fall season.

So what exactly is the appeal of netball? Here’s what some DB Pirates have to say.
Netball rules “I have played netball since I was nine except for three years when I had kids. I am still playing as I turn 40,” says DB Pirate Melanie Potgieter. Originally from South Africa, Melanie is the mother of three girls, two of whom also play netball. Kate Basford, who plays for the DB Pirates Division 1 team, the Black Pearls, started netball at primary school in the UK almost 40 years ago. “We first played a simplified version of the game called skittleball where you had to knock a skittle over instead of shooting through a net. In those days there weren’t the opportunities for girls to play football or rugby competitively like today, so netball was one of the main options. I’m glad I started because I’m still enjoying it now.”
Rules of netball Netball is a fast-paced game that is played in four quarters lasting a total of 60 minutes. There are seven players a side with very specific roles. To help the referee know who is playing what position, the players wear a two-digit designation on both the front and back of their bibs. This is necessary as the court is divided into thirds and positions can only move within certain areas. DB Pirate Paige Wills, 11, who followed her older sister into the sport, has this to say. “There are raised goal rings at each end of the court for players to try and score through. One point is awarded for each goal. Only two players from each team may score goals – the Goal Attack and Goal Shooter.”
During general play, a player with the ball can hold onto it for only three seconds before shooting a goal or passing to another player. Paige explains, “You have to throw accurately so you Someone who has seen both don’t accidentally throw sides of netball – as a player and DB Pirate Paige Wills celebrates to the other team. Unlike in as a coach – is Barbara ‘Barbs’ her team’s recent wins basketball, where the person Murray. She recalls, “Growing up in who plays centre is usually the tallest South Africa, netball was very popular player on the court, other positions need and I started playing from the age of nine, to be tall in netball, so that a player can throw the participating at school, then in club leagues. I ball over shorter players.” started playing netball in DB in 1995 with what was then a very small but competitive club. By 2002 we didn't have a coach and so I took on the job to keep the interest in Netting a winner netball going. I think the attraction of netball definitely is for all our players to be able to get one hour of 'me time', Hong Kong is part of the Asian Federation of Netball socialising with a great bunch of people and getting a really Associations (AFNA), which is the governing body of netball good physical workout at the same time.” in Asia. Barbs notes, “Netball is growing at a rapid pace in Hong Kong. The local schools and universities are becoming very involved and the HKNA ladies league has grown from 30 teams when I originally started playing to 56 teams this season. There are six divisions for the ladies league in Hong Kong, and on average there are nine to 10 teams in each division. The DB Pirates have teams in divisions 1, 2, 5 and 6.” If you want to be part of a team sport that is fast, focused and fun, netball could be a good bet.

supermodel Cynthia Lie-Breit proves creative thinking and a willingness to ditch stuff can result in a flat that looks ripped from the headlines. The designer’s DB home is the ultimate portfolio, as Elizabeth Kerr discovers
C
ynthia Lie-Breit has a serious problem with ‘stuff’, that intangible, yet painfully material filler that crowds most of our homes. Walk into her two-bedroom flat in Discovery Bay, up the hill from the ferry pier, and the first thing you notice – other than its impeccably efficient and creative design and the smell of something delicious baking – is that she indeed has stuff. It’s hard not to with two small children. But there’s no sense of clutter or disorder. And that should be nearly impossible with so much open-concept space in the flat. The founder and director of Bricks & Mortar Design has some pretty harsh words for hoarders, harsher even than George Carlin’s. “My first advice to people is always to throw half of your crap away,” Cynthia states emphatically, with a laugh. “I don’t know what it is with Hong Kong people, but most have a small space and difficulty letting go of things. If you haven’t used it in the last year, you’re not going to in the next.”
Keep it simple – and expansive Born to Chinese parents in Indonesia, Cynthia grew up in the Netherlands and lived there most of her life until work

in the fashion industry with the Montcler Group took her to Italy, New York, Bangkok and eventually Hong Kong. Simultaneously modern and cosy, her 1,600 square-foot flat is a study in contrasts that complement each other and never tip over into the abyss of excess or randomness. Natural wood, stainless steel, exposed brick and polished stone are running motifs creating an aesthetic continuity that feels effortless. There’s only one wood colour and grain used for the floor throughout the flat, as well as a single type of wood for shelving. All the walls are an industrial burnished grey and all the plants are plain green. “Don’t use too many materials,” Cynthia advises. “Keep it together and keep it focused. And stick to one or two colours on the walls.” Aside from the ordered, minimal arrangement, another element that pops in Cynthia’s design is its lack of egregious walls. “Oh, I knocked them all down,” she says proudly. “If there’s one thing Hong Kong flats can do with less of it’s walls.” Stand at just the right spot near the kitchen-diningliving area (no walls so no rooms) and you can see all four

sides of the flat. Which doesn’t mean there’s no privacy or no way of partitioning the space if needed. Cynthia just chose a way to do it that was less jarring. “I like open-space living but at the same time I want the option of dividing the area softly, without hard doors or walls,” she explains. “I prefer big plants or dramatic curtains to create separations. With the grey walls there needs to be something warmer that brightens up the space a bit.”
Make the kitchen the hub
with flours, sugars, salts and oils. “We love to cook. We love to entertain,” she enthuses. “Living in the Netherlands and Italy, the kitchen was always what kept the household together. So I’ve always put a lot of attention into that. It must be a living kitchen. Often you see these great [showroom] kitchens but they’re just dead. There’s nothing going on. Your kitchen should smell like something.”
Follow some tricks of the trade
The area nearest the windows was at one time the live-in helper’s quarters but is now part of the kitchen, complete with streaming sunlight and a street view. Cynthia had the dividing wall removed, which now opens up the entire space over to the balcony, way on the other side of the flat. Sitting at the rustic dining table, it’s baffling to think how dark and dreary the original design of the unit must have been.
Cynthia doesn’t show off her home. It’s not there to be fawned over or give her an opportunity to boast about her exclusive Jordanian throw rugs, and glassware hand-blown by 126-year-old Mexican shamans. In fact she likes a good bargain as much as anyone (she’s a huge fan of no name Made-in-China toilet bowls). But one thing she won’t skimp on, and doesn’t recommend anyone skimp on, is crucial moving parts: toilet-tank mechanisms, taps, lighting and lamps, and major appliances.
Cynthia sees the kitchen as the centre of the household. Behind a kitchenware-lined wall of shelves reaching up to the ceiling is a long, unobtrusive pantry absolutely loaded
“We had a certain budget and I’ve done everything with local materials; I like to source locally,” she says. “The only thing we didn’t save on was lighting and

electrical appliances. All the major appliances came from Germany.”
Even the kids’ bedroom is stylish and minimal
Ultimately it’s the little touches that make a difference, and give personality, to the overall design: the balcony doors that fold into pre-existing exploitable nooks, coloured stones in the bathroom basin that lend a home-spa vibe, and storage under beds and high up near the ceiling that leaves bookshelves free for books. Notably, Cynthia uses hardware and fixtures for alternate purposes – like curtain-rod ends as towel hooks and gas piping as curtain rods. “I couldn’t find curtain rods,” she scoffs with a chuckle. We’ve all been there. Cynthia simply refused to stay.

unning from February 2 to 8, Discovery College Arts Fest, a self-funded festival put on by members of Discovery College (DC) and its PTA, celebrates visual arts, performing arts and music. Workshops hosted include Body Percussion, Hip Hop, Dragon Dancing and Chinese Watercolour Painting. There are also musical performances, plays and comedy nights. This year sees a new dimension added through digital-art events, such as movie making, graphic design and app building. Discovery College’s deputy headmaster, Peter Lasscock explains, “Arts Fest is now part of the college’s DNA. We believe that the kids’ participation in this festival is part of their development as individuals. We want this year’s event, more than ever, to expand the horizons of both the students and the community.” Younger year groups have each been assigned two different art forms to concentrate on throughout the week; senior students choose from a range of over 15 workshops, including creative writing, architecture and design, and photography. There’ll be movie making with students from the Hong Kong Design Institute, and a backstage visit to the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. These activities form part of an Elective Programme, relating to students’ personal interests and their International Baccalaureate diplomas. Of course many Arts Fest events are open to the public. Highlights this year include a performance of Alice in Wonderland by the Get Real Theatre Company, a recital by the cello group Low Strung, and the annual comedy night, featuring big-name stand-up comedians such as Anthony Solimini. This year’s line-up also has a special comedy show for young adults aged 11+. “Visiting backstage last year furthered my interest in the performing arts, especially learning what happens behind the scenes,” says Year 11 student, Yong Soo Kweon. “The whole Arts Fest really appeals to me because it gives us an

opportunity to express ourselves in creative, artistic ways that we wouldn’t normally get in school.” Professionals involved in this year’s programme include the internationally acclaimed graffiti artist Ceet Fouad, whose work wows at brands such as Prada and Adidas. There are Body Percussion workshops led by worldrenowned body musician and educator, Keith Terry; and Street Dancing lessons with Jane Herrlich of DB’s own DMR School of Ballet. Dance enthusiast, Lachie Fagan (Year 5) recalls enjoying the Hip Hop workshop last year. “I think Arts Fest is a great thing for our school,” he says. “Normally we don’t get these kinds of opportunities and it’s great to be taught by experts about an art form they know so well.” Throughout the week collaborative works of art produced by the DC students are on display – and being auctioned online. Bidding closes at 4pm on February 8 and all money raised will go towards the funding of next year’s Arts Fest. An exciting new addition to this year’s programme is the Discovery Fair, open to all on February 6. The fair gives members of the local community the opportunity to display their own original artwork. There’ll also be professional Line Dancing, a performance by the DC Cobra Choir and a DMR Bollywood dance, plus a Dragon Dance to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
