DB MOMENTS Warming up for Picnic in the Park
Would you believe we’ve been publishing in DB now for 10 years? Firstly, of course, Inside DB and now with the bigger and so-muchbetter Around DB. As you know our scope has widened to include the whole of Lantau, and we are now reporting on an ever-increasing range of hard-hitting topics. Opportunely, we’ve also just gone live with www.arounddb.com. Think of it as our 10th anniversary present to you! We’ve had so much positive feedback about our new website, already, with many of you discovering that it’s a top resource for everything DB- and Lantaurelated. Just as we hoped! Keep those hits coming! Meanwhile, in this special anniversary issue, we are focusing on supermotivated residents and what they are giving back to the community. We talk to 22 year-old Ajit Gidwani, already a tennis coach at Club Siena, who continues to help underprivileged school children in India.
We also hear from three international, Lantau-based adventure racers who organise a series of hugely popular local endurance events. And you can read up on what local paddlers have been doing for the endangered Chinese White Dolphins. This month too, for DB mums and dads, we take a realistic look at funding children’s university education. And would-be parents, who are finding it difficult to start a family, will be inspired by our lead story on achieving just that. Happy reading, and I look forward to meeting up with you online at www.arounddb.com.

Two DB Pirates senior netballers, Felicity Broadley (left) and Emma Wall (right), represented Hong Kong at the eighth Asian Netball Championships in Sri Lanka this past August. Although they lost to tournament-winners Singapore in the semi-finals, the ladies are to be highly commended. And there’s more big news for the Pirates. Two of its junior netball teams (the Under 13s and Under 19s) are taking part in the Hong Kong Netball Association's Autumn League. Watch this space to see how they get on over the season! DB’s number one lifestyle magazine now goes under a new name of course – Around DB, and we hope you enjoy it all the more! Corinne would like to thank her staff, writers, advertisers and friends for their loyal support, and even more importantly all of you who read us in print and online!

jit Gidwani, 22, is a familiar face to many in Discovery Bay. First, we remember him as a junior tennis champion playing for the Hong Kong national team, and now we know him as a coach at Club Siena training DB’s next generation of tennis stars. “I love it,” Ajit explains. “Teaching kids, bringing up juniors and working with adults – all while playing tennis! I am also qualified as a personal trainer so I might look into that in the future as a supplement to my tennis coaching.” One thing few people know about Ajit is that he is also a dedicated and extremely successful altruist. Right now he is raising funds for the Kabliji Hospital and Rural Health Centre in Haryana, India [50 kilometres south of New Delhi]. The money goes towards helping the elderly in neighbouring rural communities who suffer from cataracts. Each surgery costs just US$40 (HK$300), so if you want to help, do head out to Club Siena and meet up with Ajit.

October 2012
So how did this all begin? His father, Baljit Gidwani, notes that with the exception of his excellence as a tennis player, growing up in DB, Ajit was like any other young boy. In other words, he didn’t show a particular interest in altruistic endeavours, apart from a few school functions he organised to raise money for charity. However, in his last few months of secondary school [he attended Discovery Bay International School until Primary 6, then went to Island School in the Mid Levels], Ajit decided he wanted to take a gap year. “I said he could,” recalls Baljit, “on condition that he had a plan for how he was going to use it.” Ajit takes up the narrative, “I wanted to spend some time doing social work, so I got in touch with some relatives in India who had connections with several organisations. When I arrived in India, in July 2009, I spent the first day visiting different groups I could work with. I chose Kabliji

Ajit coaching at Club Siena, DB School [a sister organisation of Kabliji Hospital and Rural Health Centre] primarily because I enjoy working with children. Also, it is in a very rural setting, which provided a real contrast to Hong Kong, and there were no other volunteers. I decided to spend four weeks there.” However, the then teen was unprepared for his time in India and the experience didn’t go well.
“In my last lesson with a particular class, one of the boys started to cry when he was supposed to be doing his work,” Ajit explains. “I crouched beside his bench and asked him what had happened, and he whispered, ‘Sir, I feel sad that you are leaving’. I had not noticed this kid until that moment and it was the first time he spoke to me the entire trip. As other kids saw what had happened, they also started to express their emotions.” Clearly, Ajit had made a more positive impression on his young students than he imagined.
Initial challenges Ajit struggled with many hurdles – he didn’t speak the local language, his preconceived notions did not match the harsh reality, and he suffered from the physical ailments that commonly afflict first-time travellers to India. It seemed like his volunteering would yield few rewards. But something happened on his last day that changed everything, and not just for Ajit.
On the plane trip back to Hong Kong, an idea began to form in his mind.

core areas – English, Hindi, Mathematics and General Science. Ajit decided he would like to improve the students’ education by adding an additional four subjects to the curriculum – art, music, physical education and computer studies. His first step was to write to the trustee of the school to propose allowing him to take charge of the students’ development in these additional school subjects, but at no extra cost to the school. Once he received the go ahead, Ajit set about getting funding for his project. He initiated local events including a bingo night and charity tennis tournaments, in addition to giving speeches in schools. Once his funding was secured, it was back to India – from October 2009 to September 2010. His father, who visited him on several occasions, recalls watching his son engage with the children and the school staff, and even visiting the children's families in the villages every weekend. “I was deeply moved to see how immersed Ajit became in the whole experience and particularly how much he grew as a result,” Baljit adds. “The children he worked with benefited greatly from their exposure to him but he benefited even more from his exposure to them.” In addition to helping the students learn across a wider variety of subjects, Ajit was also conscious of the need to help students gain confidence and motivation to continue with their studies. To that end, he implemented an award system whereby a student from each class was given a certificate at the end of each week in recognition for something they had done or demonstrated. “The system was implemented with the intention of encouraging the students and motivating them to strive further in their studies or as members of the school society,” Ajit explains.
Life after India Once Ajit’s gap year came to an end, it was with bittersweet feelings that he journeyed back to Hong Kong, and later Exeter University in the UK where he studied Human Geography. Since then, he has returned to India a few times, always being met with joy by the students and staff of Kabliji School. In addition, he is in constant communication with staff, helping them stay on track with the changes he implemented in the school. He also hears back from his students, who enjoy sharing their educational progress with him. Ajit’s active participation also extends to writing

the school’s annual report, which is required for it to retain non-governmental organisation (NGO) status and funding. “When I look back on my experience at Kabliji School,” Ajit concludes, “I realise that it was not one big thing that made me think that I might have done something right, but instead, it was lots of small things. I got lucky with Kabliji School. I was lucky that I was introduced to it. I was lucky that the teachers were so open to what I wanted to do. And I was lucky that the students and their families appreciated my efforts. Although I did everything I could during that year, I definitely came away from it with more than I could give.”

re you getting ‘long in the tooth’ yet? Are parts of your body ‘heading south’? Do you increasingly take a ‘dim view’ of things? Yes, ageing is inevitable, but in this day and age, there is a lot we can do to postpone the physical effects brought on by the march of time. The number one response to my informal survey about ageing well is to stay slim. Don’t gain weight. Ever. Oh, and don’t spend too much time in the sun or smoke a lot. But there’s more to it than that. For both men and women, turning 40 means it’s time to stop approaching personal care as a mere practical necessity. The DB experts advise we get all French about it, and begin to treat the pampering of the skin, hair and body as an enjoyable, gratifying ritual.
Aim for happy hair DB hairstylist Paul Chan has been keeping people looking good for over 30 years and he has strong opinions about the concept of hair and ageing. “In my opinion, they are not really related. I have noticed young people, especially men, here in Hong Kong losing their hair and I believe it is due to lifestyle and stress, not to the ageing process – you can often see old people with lovely thick heads of hair,” he says. Paul adds that people who play as hard as they work, which may entail drinking, smoking and late nights, may end up experiencing lifestyle-related hair loss. He believes that hair is a good indicator of general health. “As long as we have a good, happy, healthy life, with less worry, less hair will drop out,” he adds. “I can tell when someone has ‘happy hair’.” Of course, some hair issues are related to genetics. Baldness is genetic – and grey hair too. “My grey hair started to grow in when I was 17,” Paul explains. “But grey hair is strong hair.” Yes, his salt-and-pepper grey looks good on him, but if you want to cover yours up Paul can do that, too.
Feed your skin According to qualified international beauty teacher Gillian Elsworth, director of The Skin Therapy Centre in DB, our skin can start to age once we reach 40, due in part to hormonal changes. That said it really does depend on a lot of other factors such as sleep, stress, hormones, sun exposure, smoking, drinking, drugs, medication and genetics of course. “The most noticeable signs of ageing are that the skin may suddenly become much dryer, dull and dehydrated, and sun damage from years back may start to appear,” Gillian adds. “Some skin sagging at the jowls and neckline can also start to show. This all happens due to the gradual depletion of collagen, elastin and Adrenosine Triphosphate (ATP), known as the life force in the cells that keeps the skin youthful.”

However, help is at hand. One of Gillian’s most popular and effective treatments is the CACI ULTIMATE from the UK. “Tried and tested for years, this machine incorporates at least four different technologies: ‘Orbital microdermabrasion’, red-and-blue LED light therapy, an exclusive micro-current for a non-surgical face lift, a wrinkle comb (to replace injectables – no Botox needed), plus the new electrically charged ‘hydro mask‘ for intense hydration and firmness at the end,” Gillian explains. She also suggests therapies for which no machines are needed, including glycolic and enzyme peels, hydrating facials and Vitamin C treatment for pigmentation.
Treat your hands and nails Lulu MacArthur has been in the business of holding people’s hands for more than 15 years, and in this time she has learned a thing or two about fingernails – and toenails. The owner of Nailed It in DB Plaza, Lulu says, “Some of the biggest concerns about ageing nails have to do with dryness, splitting and brittleness. But there are so many

amazing products that can help, like shellac and hard gels, as well as protein treatments and cuticle creams.” Lulu also suggests a simple remedy for people who have a real problem with dry and cracking nails – frequent soaks in warm, salty water. “Also, it is important to remember that any nail polish has chemicals in it, which will dry out nails, and age them – it doesn’t matter how old you are,” she explains. “A polish or varnish is not meant to stay on for too long, so it is a good idea to refresh it after two to three weeks. Change the colour, too.” Lulu adds that, with acrylic nails or extensions, people should be careful about hygiene to avoid nail damage and infection. She recommends using a hand cream every night, massaging it into the cuticles.
Get in tune with your body How we age is related to our belief systems, says Angie Tourani, practitioner and instructor of BodyTalk, a holistic therapy incorporating the body’s natural energy systems. “Many cultures believe that with age our body degenerates;

other cultures believe that ageing leads to wisdom, strength, inner peace, balance and harmony in life,” she notes. “An individual born in a particular culture will have been influenced by the collective cultural consciousness they are born with, or by the society they live in. The BodyTalk System uses an effective technique called Active Memory to effectively address and balance the core beliefs which are not acting in harmony with the body and mind.” Angie goes on to mention the ageing effect of hormones, chemicals, dehydration and stress. “Emotional stress is a huge contributor,” she explains. “Worry, anxiety, stress and emotional traumas held in body tissue and muscles have a direct influence on hormones in the body thus speeding up the ageing process. By contrast, a person free of any emotional baggage will age gracefully. BodyTalk treats chronic stress and emotional traumas, fears and phobias by reconnecting centres of the brain to function optimally and by raising stress thresholds.”
Focus on your eyes Many people deal with myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness) and astigmatism (blurred vision), but presbyopia is the common condition that affects virtually all people as they age. “Presbyopia is the general
degeneration of the crystalline lens, and the onset of this condition generally starts at the age of 40,” says Nicholas Tse, registered optometrist at The Optical House in DB Plaza. What this means is the lens begins to have difficulty focusing on near objects. “People will begin to have trouble reading menus in dimly lit restaurants, for example, or they will move the newspaper back a little to read it.“ Nicholas says that a poor diet can advance this condition, but at some point, most people will need reading glasses. Once the presbyopia process begins, he suggests an eye check every three years or so to see if your prescription needs updating. With these people available to help us age gracefully, we’ve got no excuses.

on the way Few people’s journey to parenthood is smooth. But it helps to know you’re not alone. In fact, as these stories show, people are walking different roads to get to who they want to be – a parent. Mary Singer reports

FAMILY MATTERS
The road to parenthood – like the end result – comes in all shapes and sizes
S
ubfertility is described in the medical community as an inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. And it is also suggested that the chance of becoming pregnant at any time is not more than 25 percent. Moreover, the instance of early spontaneous miscarriage is believed to be as high as 50 percent (with chromosomal defects accounting for 95 percent of such miscarriages). Subfertility affects one in six couples, and the reasons seem to be split along equal lines: 30 percent of cases are a result of male conditions; 30 percent are attributed to conditions in the female; and 30 percent are considered unexplained. The remaining cases are a result of a combined female/ male pathology, such as allergic reactions. These statistics may be discouraging to some and encouraging to others.
perceived natural fertility is now seen as a status marker. Sarah Palin, who ran for the office of US Vice President four years ago, was sometimes described in the media as ‘fertile’, given that she had four children, including an infant, at that time. Pundits perceived her parenthood of the infant as a political asset. You don’t need to be young to become a parent anymore. In fact, few people recommend it. But along with this is the notion that subfertility is a liability. Even now, subfertility can still have negative effects on the mental health of couples, and in particular the self-worth of women. We can be reminded that, in this day and age, parenthood is not about fertility, it is about decision making.
Natural approaches to boosting fertility Historically, parenthood was a fertility issue, and perhaps old habits die hard. Since fertility can now be assisted, and is thus no longer the sole domain of the under-40’s,
For those who want to boost fertility in a natural way, there is a growing body of knowledge. Many people now endeavour

to get in shape for fertility by being mindful of diet, by exercising, detoxing and eliminating bad habits. Taking it a step further, some consider having their bodies tested for toxic chemicals and removing old dental fillings that contain mercury. Acupuncture and Chinese traditional medicine are also increasingly popular with those hoping to conceive.
Prominent Hong Kong property developer Peter Lee became a single father to triplets through surrogacy in 2010. And as surrogacy is becoming increasingly accepted in society, the number of surrogacy treatment centres is on the rise locally.
DB resident Holly Golees (not her real name) is currently involved in a surrogacy process. She and her husband have opted for this route DB mum Jenny Ash (not her real to parenthood after serious and name) attributes her success to near-fatal complications during a a combination of physical and previous pregnancy. “Surrogacy metaphysical treatment. “Yoga feels like a good option; the baby was my best friend throughout is ours – egg and sperm,” Holly my frustrating time of trying says. “It's an amazing solution to get pregnant,” she explains. for someone like me who cannot “Over those two-and-a-half years I ‘carry’ anymore. She also opines achieve a measure of self-acceptance, which that the legal aspect, and trying to find the right channel to can enhance the chances of conception. “With yoga help the process along, can be daunting. “You need to have you can focus on poses, breath work and meditations that a very strong contract to make sure the baby will stay yours clear blocks in the pelvis and ovaries,” she explains. after the pregnancy,” she concludes.
Science and nature working together Adoption – giving meaning to a life There are many conditions that obstruct fertility, which can be treated both by medical means (fertility drugs) and surgical means (intrauterine insemination, in-vitro insemination, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, sperm/ egg/ embryo donation etc.). One of the most frequently used methods of assisted conception is in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), and it is commonplace for people in Hong Kong to seek treatment here, or go to nearby fertility treatment centres in Singapore, Bangkok and Sydney. The timeframe for IVF can be as little as two weeks, making treatment abroad a relatively convenient option. The cost of such procedures varies greatly from country to country. Hong Kong online forums can provide useful information in the first instance.
Surrogacy – the ultimate sharing of fertility Surrogacy is a method of assisted conception that merges with legal procedures. It is an arrangement whereby a woman gestates and gives birth to a child for another person(s) through surgical or other means. While commercial surrogacy is illegal, altruistic surrogacy is legal, and the process is stringently regulated in the territory.

Adoption is relatively commonplace in DB, and why not? Our close proximity to China makes this a relatively easy option. And the generally open-minded policy of Hong Kong‘s Social Welfare Department also makes adoption accessible on this side of the border as well. For example, unmarried people can adopt, and a Hong Kong adoption requires a fee of less than HK$3,000. While the government does not recognise same-sex marriage, there are same-sex couples in Hong Kong who are adoptive parents (because one of the parents was granted the adoption here). You don’t have to go far to get inside information about how to become a parent this way, and Mother’s Choice (on The Peak) is a good place to start. Mother's Choice provides adoption services, foster care and care for orphans and children with special needs.
Fostering – merging a family Foster care involves caring for children under 18 years of age whose parents cannot adequately nurture them, so that they can continue to enjoy family life until they can reunite with their families, join an adoptive family or live

independently. There is also an emergency foster-care programme providing immediate and short-term residential family care to children, whose parents cannot care for them because of crisis situations. Guardianship, in this instance, should not exceed six weeks. DBer Darlene Chan (not her real name) fostered two siblings over 10 years ago. “I had always wanted to be a parent, but it was not happening for us,” says Darlene. “This opportunity was unexpected, but my husband and I talked about it and we decided to offer to care for them.” The siblings are adults now, but does Darlene question her parenthood as less authentic? “Oh no, I think we all feel like a family; they are our children and we are their parents. They give us as much joy – and headaches – as any children do, I’m pretty sure of that.” Anyone interested in fostering should note that there is a new initiative underway right here, between Mother’s Choice and the Discovery Bay International Community Church (DBICC), encouraging DB families to take this route. There are many ways to be a family – and many ways to be a parent. A common thread in all these stories is the fertile imaginations of those people who dare to decide that they will be a parent.

ho doesn’t love dolphins? They are ‘man’s best friend’ in the sea. And who doesn’t love the Chinese White Dolphin, who has called the Pearl River Estuary home since before Macau was the least bit Portuguese (that long!). The species is as iconic to the HKSAR as the panda is to the mainland, and not only that, the Chinese White Dolphin is pink (a result of thermoregulation). These pink dolphins are facing increased threats from overfishing, marine traffic and pollution and as such, they are a protected species both here and on the mainland. But it takes more than writing their name on a list to keep them safe – it is believed that there are as few as 200 now in Hong Kong waters. The fact is, Hong Kong’s Chinese White Dolphin is on the verge of extinction.

Local paddlers to the rescue The Lantau Island Outrigger Canoe Club (LIOCC) organised a DB event, in conjunction with the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Stanley, Lamma and South Lantau paddlers, to raise awareness about the decreasing numbers of pink dolphins in local waters. On September 8, some 90 paddlers from all over Hong Kong participated in the Dolphin Quest paddling event, founded by former LIOCC member Ian Carrero, and now in its second year. Participants circumnavigated Lantau, a distance of 74 kilometres, in search of the dolphins that congregate off Tai O. It was an especially memorable day because the whole Hong Kong paddler community came together. As LIOCC member Brandon Viuhkola, who as a volunteer handles boat safety

Kevin Kelly, the captain of the LIOCC’s men’s team has a personal take on the discouraging statistics. “The numbers of dolphins that you can see nowadays in Hong Kong is decreasing, mainly due to water pollution. I grew up by the ocean in California. I love water. But I know that we all need to be careful with this polluted water. It can harm all of us – humans and animals.”

Hong Kong DolphinWatch has been operating ecological tours out of South Lantau since 1995. It provides organised tours for individuals and groups, including schools, and has recently published a book, The Story of Hope, about the Chinese White Dolphin. You can also support the efforts of local organisations, such as the WWF Hong Kong and Living Islands Movement, in urging the Hong Kong Government to, finally, implement the Southwest Lantau Marine Park and the Soko Islands Marine Park proposals, which were tabled back in 2002. Designating these areas as marine parks would go a long way to conserving the natural environment and protecting the local Chinese White Dolphins, Finless Porpoises and other local species.

There is no golden rule when it comes to funding kids’ education but for many parents investment classes may be essential

You get what you pay for, or so the saying goes. Gordon Franks outlines some creative ways to save more for your children’s higher education
I
t’s the time of year when many of us in Discovery Bay will know of young adults (or have family members), who are leaving home to embark upon their higher education. More often than not, for us living in this part of the world, this involves international education in countries such as the UK, USA and Australia, which brings with it extra costs when students visit the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ for financing. We all want what is best for our children, but as a parent you cannot dictate whether they will be intellectuals or successful business magnates. What you can determine, however, is the educational head start your children will have. And with sensible planning this may not be as daunting as we fear.
It’s never too soon to plan education funding Education is not an exclusive gilt-edged invitation to the future. It is however an essential start to life that enables most people to at least get their feet in the doors of varying degrees of opportunity. On average, male and female graduates with a degree can earn 60 percent and 65 percent more per year, respectively, than non-graduates. Clearly, one of the best investments you can make for your children is an investment in their educational future. Parents may often postpone planning education funding because the task seems overwhelming, or they think saving the required amount of money will force them to compromise their current lifestyle. While these are real

Working on the basis that the mortgage was on an interest-only basis, you would then have US$400,000 of capital in the property which goes a long way. Not everyone will have US$100,000 in cash to invest but it may be a more achievable goal to save. Alternatively, if you have other properties, equity release could be an option to allow you to purchase more properties for the purposes of education planning.
You may think that setting up a savings account for your two-yearold's education is a great start and it is certainly better than nothing. In the 70s, there used to be a British television quiz show called University Challenge, but for kids today university challenge can mean being able to afford to go or not, and if there, to have time to study while leading a reasonable existence. Does your education-fund plan include cover for the following? 1. Unemployment and income loss. Could the family unit support educational costs from existing cash reserves? Should schooling depend upon one or both parental incomes? 2. Single or joint parental mortalities. If you foolishly neglect life insurance safeguards, will your remaining liquidated estate assets be sufficient to cover every aspect of financial security after inheritance taxes and death duties have been paid? 3. Terminal illness and accidents. To prevent life events impacting on your surviving partner and children you should review your contingency plans. Educational funds left inadequately accumulated could easily be depleted from insurable risk events in a relatively short space of time. This would leave the family unit in financial difficulty as far as ongoing education costs are concerned. Professional profiling can identify dangers and negate financial risk exposure.

’m in one of my favourite places in Asia – on the back of a motorbike with the wind in my hair – embarking on an adventure. This time the road zipping under my feet and the scenery swishing past is Cambodian, specifically the environs of Kep-sur-Mer in the easternmost corner of the country’s south-west coast. The Gulf of Thailand is on my right, dotted with fishing boats, and on my left, inland, is one of the country’s lesser known attractions.
Eerie and brooding, these once celebrated retreats beg exploration. But carefully, as stepping off the beaten path still evokes its own brand of risk in Cambodia. One villa has been reclaimed by man, and for the princely sum of US$1 (HK$8) you can walk in through the barbed wire gates, up the short drive and into the airy building. It’s little more than a shell, but the ruin evokes a colonial feel in the high ceilings, breezy balconies and grand staircase. Graffiti on the walls sketches scenes from the town’s harsh past.
Kep-sur-Mer Between the turn of the century when the town was founded and the 60s, the French and Cambodian elite escaped to breezy Kep-sur-Mer from stifling Phnom Penh. The Le Corbusier-style villas must have been home to endless parties on the balconies; glasses tinkling and music wafting high on the sea breeze, all punctuated by the sound of laughter. But these F. Scott Fitzgerald scenes belong in the past. When civil war engulfed the country in 1970, the holiday inhabitants were forced to leave and their homes were looted. Inevitably nature took over and the slow, strangling jungle reclaimed the villas, creating Kepsur-Mer’s modern version of Angkor Wat’s Ta Prohm.
Some of Kep’s historic ruins are gradually being turned into charming boutique hotels (or sadly razed to the ground to make way for more modern-style accommodation). One of the best, and longest established, is Knai Bang Chatt, where just 11 rooms, a small pool, large lawn and countless antiques create a peaceful, cultural bolthole. A Kep highlight is to wake with the sun and walk to the crab market where the women of the town sort and steam their menfolk’s catch. The sleepy commerce of the morning is accompanied by gossip and smiles, and stall holders fry up deliciously doughy breakfasts. Later on in the day, the string of restaurants nearby feed the vast majority of the

town’s international tourists. The green pepper that gives Kep’s famous crab dish its gentle, fragrant heat grows inland where orchards of the plant flourish, and further out of town towards the shore are acres of flat, white salt fields. Kep’s small beach is dark, shallow and not conducive to swimming or sunbathing unless you’re a local kid, ensuring a relatively crowd-free visit, for now. Tourists dying for a beachy escape head across the waves for Koh Tonsay. Cheap as chips, the basic bungalows and food shacks are strictly no frills, while nature provides the paradisiacal sand, sea and sun.
Kampot Along the coast heading west towards Sihanoukville there’s Kampot, a delightfully crumbly town of wide roads, bougainvillea-strewn buildings and an increasing array of cafés, restaurants and bars. Hire a moped and meander the streets, fast enough to catch a breeze but slow enough to take in the way of life around you. La Java Bleue and Le Soleil d’Or are both great places to stay, retaining just a touch of French-colonial charm. There are a few worthwhile day trips from Kampot, including a visit to the outlying Buddhist cave temples, and the old colonial Bokor Hill Station. However Bokor is undergoing work for a new casino and hotel complex, so check what your trip would include before signing up.

Khmer kids having some fun in Sihanoukville
For keen shoppers, two stores sell handicrafts to benefit local social enterprises, but really the charm of Kampot is in wandering, absorbing the peace and stopping off for street food, a spontaneous Khmer curry or a bottle of ice-cold Angkor beer.
Sihanoukville Further west, in the middle of Cambodia’s southern coastline, is its gateway, Sihanoukville. An enduringly seedy aspect deters some travellers, but here you’ll find the whitest beaches on the mainland. The local market is a warren of dark lanes and corridors. As your eyes adjust you’ll find anything and everything is being sold, from cheap clothes, souvenirs and homeware to beauty products, local vegetables, fruit and fish. Five-star hotels of note include the Sokha Beach Resort and Spa, on Sihanoukville’s beachfront, where the overriver bungalows have a luxurious feel. The Independence Hotel, the city’s grande dame, is still a firm favourite with many. Ramping the quality up yet another knotch is Song Saa, a recently opened private-island resort, less than 30 minutes offshore. It has a stunning spa.

Who am I? KayeKaye Khemlani (PIBA No. 0032-009006), a native English-speaking insurance advisor, with a strong presence in Discovery Bay and Hong Kong.
My thoughts I understand we all go through different stages of life and so do our insurance needs. But the mandatory insurances required by the HK Government (including domestichelper insurance, house insurance, automobile coverage and life insurance), are always worth due diligence. This month, I want to wake you up to some things you may not have considered about your home insurance policies.
Home insurance Homeowners insurance is a security blanket. It is designed to protect you in the event of a catastrophe. Therefore, when you are choosing a policy, don’t always look to save money – the best deal may cost you more in the long run. Here are five things you will want to consider and know about: 1. Shop around: When you receive your annual renewal statement, check to see if you can snag a better deal elsewhere. Consider moving your auto policy too; bundling home and auto coverage with the same insurer can cut your total premiums. 2. You may have too much coverage. It’s common for policies to contain inflationprotection provisions that automatically increase your coverage amount. You may want to adjust your coverage amount to a more realistic figure.. 3. Small claims can cost you, too. Go with the highest deductible you can afford and bank the savings to cover the cost of minor repairs. Filing a claim for every broken window or leaky pipe makes for excessively high premiums. Better to save your home cover for the really big things like fire and theft and typhoons 4. Your home policy is the correct way to protect all your valuables like jewellry, watches, laptops, tablets, mobiles etc all over the world, most people wrongly assume that your travel policy protects these items… it doesn’t, its your home policy that gets to have the expensive stuff tacked on it

Exploring an extreme form of competition, Megaen Kelly talks to three Lantau-based endurance runners who organise adventure races locally, and race the world for charity

dventure racing – also known as expedition racing – is the umbrella term for a typically multiday endurance event that is comprised of various disciplines. These can include trail running, mountain biking, orienteering, kayaking and more. The races may feature individual competitors or teams – twoperson teams being the most common. Adventure racing is all the rage globally. And while vigorous training in the various disciplines is necessary, preparation doesn’t stop there. Navigation skills, rope knowledge and basic wilderness medicine skills are also vital when competing in the longer endurance events. So, let’s hear it from three Lantau-based adventurerace addicts, incidentally the best of friends, who are championing the sport in Hong Kong. To give you an immediate idea of their grit, just this summer, Pierre Le Magnan biked 210 kilometres through Mongolia over three days; Zein Williams ran a 100-kilometre trail in Mongolia also over three days; and Clement Dumont raced to the top of Japan’s Mount Fuji in just three-anda-quarter hours.
Smells like team spirit A professional athlete from France, who designs and supplies Chiru Endurance Bikes (Hong Kong’s first mountain-bike brand), Pierre Le Magnan has lived in Hong Kong for 17 years. And he’s been adventure racing for nearly

as long. However, not only does he participate in races, he organises them as well. A member of Team Raidlight, a local adventure-racing club that competes locally and overseas, he is a co-founder of the Raidlight Lantau50, the territory’s toughest trail run, held annually in March. So how did Pierre get involved in adventure racing? “It was out of excitement for the unknown,” he says. “And also out of curiosity to see if I would be up to tackling the challenge and finishing the race.” When asked how he would describe adventure racing, Pierre responds, “Get ready to suffer for others. Adventure racing is about teamwork as you need to cross the line together. Teammates need to help each other, as the team speed is given by the slowest team member. The good news is that we all have our strengths and weaknesses, so each team member takes turns to help and be helped.” Adventure racing has brought out the charitable side of Pierre. He notes, “There is a lot of equipment ‘sleeping’ in runners’ cabinets in Hong Kong; however, lots of racers in countries like Nepal can't afford to equip themselves with even the bare minimum. So I had the idea to offer to collect used gear when people join our trail-running events and donate it through the Child Welfare Scheme (CWS).” The CWS is dedicated to providing education, healthcare and social opportunities to disadvantaged Nepalese children and their families. “It’s high intensity, fun stuff,” Zein quips, “and you get to do a mixture of sports which allows you to keep going for hours. The crowd who does it is fun and it’s a great team sport.” Zein, like Pierre, is a member of Team Raidlight. Her advice for anyone interested in taking up this rigorous sport is to cross train, rest well and look after your nutrition. “Have loads of fun and meet loads of people,” she adds. “You will love it!”
Seeking the ultimate challenge Another member of top-flight Team Raidlight, Clement Dumont, who teaches Biology at the French International School, Happy Valley, and is an honorary assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong conducting research into marine conservation and fisheries management, has been into endurance sports from an early age.

participants to share with the people of Nepal by donating unwanted bags, tops, shorts and shoes. But back to the racing! “Don't let the multisport scare you because there are too many disciplines – this is actually a benefit,” says Pierre. “Your risk of injury is highly decreased as different joints and muscle groups are in action. Use your head and be smart when you train, focus on minimising the risk of injury and don't hesitate to ask for tips from other racing enthusiasts.”
Zein, with her husband Garrett Quigley, competing in Racing the Planet in Namibia, Africa
Female inspiration Mother of two, Zein Williams, originally from Jordan but brought up in Hong Kong, has been adventure racing for just a year. And according to Pierre she wins every race she enters. Zein got into the sport on moving to Lantau. “With the trails on our doorstep it’s just too tempting!” she says. An unexpected series of events prompted Zein to start competing. “I got into running as a result of my volunteer work for the CWS,” Zein, who is the organisation’s Hong Kong director, explains. “To raise funds for our work in Nepal, I signed up for a Racing the Planet race in 2007 – a 250-kilometre, selfsupported charge across the Gobi Desert. There were a few of us doing it and we managed to raise HK$300,000. After that, I was hooked on adventures and running.

“My first challenge was at 21-years old with my brother, biking 2,000 kilometres through the Simpson Desert in the Australian Outback,” he explains. “One year later, after completing my first half marathon, I signed up for the 250-kilometre Marathon des Sables. I was not prepared at all to run a six-day marathon across the Sahara Desert. I suffered like hell but did finish. However, I really started to get into racing when I moved to Hong Kong with my wife who is also an avid runner.” Along with Pierre, Clement is co-founder of the Raidlight Lantau50. When asked why he decided to set up the event, he says, “Lantau Island is a pristine area with many trails. I first organised friendly trail runs and got positive feedback. So I decided to try the Lantau50, which involves running 50 kilometres along the most scenic and technically difficult trails. The Lantau50 is a real challenge – it gives runners the opportunity to test their limits.” And along with Zein, Clement supports CWS. He notes of the group and its work, “As trail runners and nature enthusiasts we all know that Nepal is home to some of the most breath-taking trails in the world. Yet with this beauty comes immense contrasts – the mountains make life extremely difficult for the majority of the population. As a result of limited access to water, healthcare, schools and infrastructure, 40 percent of children are chronically malnourished. CWS addresses the unnecessary suffering of children in Nepal by providing them with opportunities which will change their lives forever.” And his advice to people interested in adventure racing? “Start with short distances, cross train to avoid injury and enjoy being outside. If you are afraid to go alone on the trails, the best thing is to join a trail race or a running festival to meet people and get advice (and a partner) for weekend runs.” As can be seen from these three enthusiasts, there’s more to adventure racing than just crossing the finish line: it’s about teamwork, the personal challenge, and the chance to make a difference.

Stop worrying that due to the dogs, the babies or your own general untidiness, your house is a mess. At least you’re not a design victim, says May Liu
I
’d ask you back but the flat is in a real state; the kids have taken over the living room and it looks like a bomb just hit it.’ Sound familiar? Too often even close friends are embarrassed about the way their homes look, and won’t let you through the door – no matter how hard you insist that you were hoping to visit them and not their decor. “To me the most important thing about designing someone’s home is in making it just that – a comfortable home,” says Lantau-based interior designer David Roden. “Obviously there’s homey and there is really unpleasantly homey. No one wants to see kiddie clutter all over the living room floor during a dinner party. But to me the biggest design mistake is in creating a home that is overtly or theatrically styled.”
54

Why live a cliché? It’s true that in hyped-up Hong Kong the self-consciously styled home has become almost commonplace. Over achievers of a certain age (say mid-20s and up) obsess not just about their clothes, meals and hobbies but also about their home decor. Interior design is a glamorous pursuit, and in the same way fashionistas shop for clothes at the start of each season, devotees now go out in search of hot new homeware. Amateur stylists are determined to emulate the picture-perfect homes they see in the interior-design glossies, but all too often they end up creating a cliché. On the catwalk, colours are either in or out, and hemlines are either up or down, but homeware designers are a more predictable bunch and seasonal changes are not so

extreme. Is this why so many local homes adhere to the same basic aesthetic? People’s obsession with minimalism is largely to blame, according to David. “Popularised in the nineties and now mainstream, it has become the yardstick by which we judge our homes,” he says. “The theory is that trendy schemes have to be monochromatic, and to put it frankly, as empty as is humanly liveable. “Don’t get me wrong, the minimal look works in our typically small Hong Kong flats,” David continues. “But there comes a point when you tire of the clean-lined home in which everything has been pared back to the bone. Sometimes I look at these bare, soulless rooms and I hunger for some personality – even a little clutter.”
It’s true that when visiting homes like these, the decor seems to say very little about the people actually living there. Key items in any home with design pretensions include an L-shaped sofa, plasma TV, built-in cabinetry and concealed lighting. Individual pieces may have cost big bucks but the end result can be bland and formulaic, like a Colouring by Numbers painting.
Avoid design classics For David another pet peeve is the so-called design classic. “Certain items now pop up in almost every design-led home you visit,” he says. “Just about everyone I know has an Arco lamp, maybe a Barcelona chair, definitely a heap of Alessi accessories, and it gets really boring. Items like these (however beautiful) have been turned into status symbols.

People own them, at least in part, so they can show their friends that they know a thing or two about interior design.” Certainly with so many of us aspiring to be amateur Kelly Hoppens, once-cool decorating ideas (or items, or even brands) are going to become clichéd. “And, it’s not just rich people now, it’s all of us,” says David. “If you can’t afford the real thing you get a really good copy in Wanchai. You can even pick up a clever look-a-like in stores like GOD or Ikea, albeit with a twist.”
Don’t be a design victim So what does it say about you if your home is designed down to the last detail? “There’s an exhibitionist element,” says David, “or rather people design their homes to be viewed. Of course everyone is self-conscious about the way their home looks to a degree, but for some people it becomes a staged performance.”
A Barcelona chair is de rigueur in any design-led home (www.barcelonachaircompany.co.uk)
The over-performing home is big on stagecraft. And to be fair many of us are guilty of this sort of artifice. Coffee-table books are for instance simply a prop. They are not actually there to be read, and after a few weeks we don’t even notice them anymore – they are simply for show. But this is taken to extremes when the whole interior looks staged, with every sign of real domesticity hidden away in cabinets. In this kind of home, books are arranged on shelves according to colour, and even the floral arrangements (typically plain, white Calla lilies) conform to the clean-lined, colour-free aesthetic. “You can tell if you’re at a design victim’s home because everything looks exactly right but feels exactly wrong,” says David. “Have you ever tried sitting in a suspended Perspex Bubble chair? Not comfortable. And don’t get me started on the very Hong Kong obsession with adding Chinese antiques into a modern, minimal, clearly European scheme. It simply looks pretentious. Why would you want to keep your papers in a Ming-style hat box? A filing cabinet or bookcase is so much more practical.”
Consider the alternatives It’s interesting to consider whether our parents and grandparents were so self-conscious about decorating their homes. “My mother is an interior designer, so I’m not sure I can speak for everyone on this,” says David. “But I think in the past people bought things for the home that they liked, that they needed, that were useful. They would stick with the same decorative scheme for years. Interior design wasn’t a pursuit, it was a practicality. I imagine home decorating was less competitive, less about keeping up with the Joneses.”

Clean-lined design sometimes cries out for a little clutter (www.toynuts,com)
Does David expect things to turn full circle? Will we learn to relax more about the way our homes look and take a chill pill? “Probably not,” he says. “All the oh-so-perfect homes we see in magazines and on the internet will continue to inspire some people, and make others feel inadequate.” So what is our best way forward? “Interior-design options, potentially at least, are now more varied than ever,” David says. “So take a totally personal approach to your surroundings and opt for as original a look as possible. Think eclectic rather than formulaic and don’t rush things. Remember that comfort is key, texture is all important, and colour is creeping back in.”

Shangri-la
The Island Shangri-la’s Lobster Bar and Grill is now serving afternoon tea. Reflecting its name, some savouries feature lobster – in rye bread rolls with mascarpone; barbecued with truffle as the filling of a savoury bun; with avocado in sandwiches; and in miniature wafer cones, topped with caviar. The sweet section features macaroons and pastries, and raisin and plain scones with jam and cream. Choose from a variety of coffees or specialty teas, and consider an indulgent bottle of Veuve Clicquot rosé champagne. Available Saturday, Sunday and public holidays from 3pm to 5.30pm, priced at HK$238 per person, HK$428 for two, or HK$788 with a bottle of champagne for two. To make a booking, call 2820 8560.

DB MOMENTS
for those about to rock
Horus – on the heavier side of the musical spectrum
Warming up for Picnic in the Park on November 3, Around DB talks to Andrew Ellis, heavy-metal guitarist for hot DB-based band Horus
T
here’s a heady line-up of local bands all set to perform at Hong Kong’s largest (live) music and dance festival in Siena Park, DB on November 3. Since the first show, in November 2005, we have been wowed by the likes of Helium3, Midlife Crisis, BenZine, The Vibes, Soul Traders, Cougar Bait and Last Man Standing. Rockin’ performances prove that the Hong Kong musical community really has its groove on and its mojo working. No wonder then that many local bands form just to get on stage at Picnic in the Park (PiP), and the crowd at Siena Park this year is expected to number more than 8,000. Off the charts! On the organisers’ facebook page, recent posts by socalled Pipsters set the tone. One compares the event to Glastonbury with sanitiser, another exhorts us to dust off our picnic rugs and polish those dancing shoes. Woohoo! There are of course a multitude of DB-based bands, covering the full spectrum of musical genres from folk and rock to reggae and jazz. We can’t introduce all of them, although over the next couple of issues we’re going to give it our best shot. For now, we’re putting the focus on Horus, not least because this band of self-confessed ‘metalheads’ has begun to make a name for itself internationally. Drummer Steve Jones, and guitarists Paul Wigham and Andrew Ellis are all long-term DB residents.
relocated to his home country last year and to keep the band rocking, the rest of us travelled to Sweden to play two gigs in the heavy-metal capital of the world: Gothenburg,” explains Andrew. The band formed in 2009 and pulled together its first gig a year later at Hemingway’s in DB Plaza. Numerous testosterone-fuelled performances have since cemented the band's reputation for extended guitar solos, amplified distortion and overall loudness. “The Gothenburg gigs had some of the liveliest audiences Horus has ever played for,” says Andrew. “There was stage diving and mosh-pit wrestling.” The band was also involved in a post-gig ‘Pagan’ ceremony, which involved a remoteisland sauna and immersion in ice-cold water. “Beer, vodka and traditional Swedish drinking songs made the thermal shock more bearable!” notes Andrew. Horus made their debut at Picnic in the Park last year, very early in the day in front of a supportive crowd. The band (including Jesper) will be playing in the park again this year – celebrating its signature brand of high-voltage music (think AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica and Iron Maiden). Let’s see if the DB crowd gives the ‘headbangers’ of Gothenburg a run for their money.
